A guide to your journey.. India Music WELCOME PACK
Welcome to Challenges Abroad Welcome to Challenges Abroad and your Summer Challenge of 2021. I am delighted to present your Welcome Pack for your trip next summer. Working with local and rural communities, Challenges Abroad relies on our volunteers like you to help sustain the ongoing work at the projects. The sustainability of local communities is a top priority for us and for our volunteers and we are proud of the fact that we are committed to meeting the UN goals for sustainable development, helping disadvantaged people around the world have a brighter future. This experience overseas would give you the opportunity to become a global citizen with the first hand understanding of the challenges of global development and how you can contribute towards solutions. This pack has information on your in-country programme as well as other integral components of your challenge in summer 2021. Please read through the pack carefully as it contains important information about flights, visas, travel insurance, DBS/PVG checks and your programme! Thank you for joining the challenge and I wish you all the very best with your fundraising! Best Wishes,

India
Programme Overview Become a Global Citizen on the India Community Challenge by spending two weeks immersed in the local culture in and around Palampur, the 'tea capital' of north India. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, you'll gain an insider perspective as you work with the local community and learn about the region's unique history and rich culture. Despite the picturesque location and neighbouring tourist towns, the area experiences multiple levels of disadvantage, with limited development or economic activity. Many of the students at our partner schools are from migrant working families and are considered the most at-risk of a successful education in northern India. This program focuses on improving both conversational English skills and children's self confidence, encouraging students to better integrate into the school environment and improve their chances of staying in school, rather than dropping out to commence work.
India Key Focus India is home to 1.34 billion people, totalling 18% of the world’s population. India has the world’s largest youth population, but over 30% of them are unemployed or not engaged in education or training. Many other problems are prevalent in this vast country which FutureSense looks to address. Our mission in Palampur is to focus on early childhood development and help close the inequality gap in the local community by giving a hand up to educational institutions. We aim to empower communities through our education and health initiatives, specifically targeting disadvantaged areas and providing them with a cross-cultural exchange and as we continue to maintain our current programs legacy, we look to expand our reach.
programme overview
Week 1: Bight and early on Monday morning you will begin your work in the community. You will be working at one of our partner schools where the majority of students come from low-income families. Your focus will be on delivering music based workshops to help improve conversational english and introduce students to new creative ideas. We encourage you to use body percussion, voice and much more! You will usually deliver two sessions a day with a break in between sessions for lunch. There will be time in the afternoons and evenings for you to plan your workshops, work on any renovation projects and to explore life in Palampur!
Week 2: Your second week and final week of volunteering will follow the same structure. Building on your workshops from week 1, you will really begin to see the development and learning amongst the year groups you are working with! We hope you will host a music concert at the end of your programme to showcase the work of the students to the local community.
Extension Trip: After your programme finishes, you will either depart to the UK or you can take part in our Golden Triangle extension trip. You will receive an email with the full itinerary so you can decide if this is something you would love to do!
