Explore the streets of historic downtown Brenham featuring an array of quaint antiques and specialty shops, as well as a variety of Texas-inspired dining, lodging and historic sites. Burton

Home of the Texas Cotton Gin Museum offering guided tours of the restored historic 1914 Burton Farmers Gin. The Burton Railroad Deport will transport you back to the 1870s when the Houston and Texas Central Railroad stopped there. Mt. Zion Cemetery, located on the scenic Independence Trail, honors early settlers including Texas Ranger Captain Leander McNelly.

Chappell Hill

A tiny town with big fun! Chappell Hill hosts the largest festivals in Washington County – the official Bluebonnet Festival of Texas each April and the Scarecrow Festival in October. The local museum illustrates the region’s history with fascinating exhibits and artifacts.

Independence

Originally named Coles Settlement after Texas Judge John P. Coles in 1824, it was later renamed in honor of Texas’ declaration of freedom from Mexico. Several historic sites are available for tours. Baylor University was founded here in 1856 and moved to Waco in 1886, but some its ruins still stand surrounded by a peaceful park ideal for picnics, photographs and wildflower enjoyment.

Washington

A must stop for any Texan historian! Explore Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site, where the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico was created and signed. Exhibits in the Visitor Center bring the Republic history to life. Relive real Texas heritage. WASHINGTON ON THE BRAZOS STATE HISTORIC SITE A nation was born along the Brazos River in 1836 when Texas declared its independence from Mexico. FLYING HORSES CAROUSEL Fully restored, the carousel is one of five classic wooden carousels that exists in Texas today and is the only example of a C.W. Parker carousel with Charles W. Dare horses. ZION HISTORICAL CHAPEL The Burton Heritage Society maintains and preserves the Burton Railroad Depot and Mt. Zion Historical Chapel. The depot transports visitors to 1870 when Burton was a Houston and Texas Central Railroad terminal, while the cemetery honors some of the earliest notable inhabitants such as famous Texas Ranger Leander McNelly. Tour some of Brenham’s beautiful 19th century homes. The 1843 Giddings Wilkin House, the oldest standing in Brenham, contains original furnishings, examples of mid-century clothing and features a unique rainwater reservoir roof. Stroll the verandas of the beautifully restored 1870 Giddings Stone Mansion, a prime example of 19th century Greek Revival architecture, and visit the Ross Carroll Bennett House, fully furnished with original antiques. HISTORIC CHAPPELL HILL

The historic community is in the heart of Bluebonnet country! The museum is housed in the 1927 public school building and presents programs and exhibits about history and the arts. Temporary exhibits change throughout the year, exploring various aspects of local history, arts, and culture. Programs include history lectures, live music, and theatrical performances. Museum and other historic properties can be rented as event venues. Guided tours of historic properties available by appointment, call museum for details. HISTORIC MASONIC CEMETERY Founded in 1853, this 4¼-acre country cemetery filled with beautiful trees is the final resting place to many “Texicans,” Confederate soldiers, local residents, and the children and grandchildren of Alamo hero William B. JOHN P. COLES HOME TOURS Two of the earliest homes of Washington County and an early 1900s one-room school house are open for tours by the Independence Historical Society. The home of John P. Coles, one of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old 300” settlers, was built in the 1820s and has been furnished to appear as it did in the days of the Republic. Free tours of the Coles home and a dog trot log cabin are hosted on selected March and April weekends. Special tours for a fee and free school tours require advance reservations. OLD BAYLOR PARKS On the west side of FM 50, ruins mark the site of the original Baylor University female department, one of the best places in the state to enjoy springtime bluebonnets. Adjacent to the John P. Coles homes, this park features picnic tables and a playground area. On the east side of FM 50, interpretive signage and a reconstructed bell tower mark the archeological ruins of the Baylor campus for males. A well-marked walking and/or driving trail with 19 interpretive signs relates the history of the village of Independence. See 7 on County Map. TEXAS COTTON GIN MUSEUM

HISTORIC TOUBIN PARK

Beneath Brenham streets is a State Archeological Landmark, a large system of historic cisterns built in the late 1800s to store rainwater for public fire-fighting. INDEPENDENCE VISITOR CENTER The Center is located in the village of Independence in the historic “Adobe House.” The house reflects pre-1836 influences when Texas was still a Mexican colony. Recent restoration discovered that the house is not made of adobe but of fieldstone with a stucco finish. Stop by, pick up brochure and map, and explore the history of Texas and Baylor University at sites significant to both Texas independence and the state’s oldest university. 10270 T. S. History’s alive at the Official Cotton Gin Museum of Texas, home of the oldest operating cotton gin in America, powered by a 1925 Bessemer engine! THE GEORGE BUSH PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY AND MUSEUM The museum tells the story of the life and times of George Bush, 41st President of the United States. TEXAS BAPTIST HISTORICAL CENTER-MUSEUM An integral part of one of Texas’ most historic sites, organized in 1839. WINEDALE HISTORICAL COMPLEX Winedale is a recorded Texas Historic Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a State Antiquities Landmark and one of the signature teaching and research collections of the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin. Winedale collects, preserves and makes available for study important examples of nineteenth-century Texas architecture and decorative arts.
