INDEPENDENCE began in 1824 as Coles Settlement on land granted by Mexico to Judge John P. Coles. It was later renamed in honor of Texas’ declaration of freedom from Mexico. Several original structures offer tours. Baylor University was founded here in 1846 and moved to Waco in 1886, but some of its ruins still stand surrounded by a peaceful park. A well-marked walking/driving trail highlights areas of historical interest. Independence is also home to the renowned Antique Rose Emporium.

WASHINGTON is the location of Washington on the Brazos
State Historic Site where the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico was created and signed. Exhibits in the Visitor Center bring the Republic history to life, a terrific gift shop offers souvenir options, and the 290-acre site also offers hiking trails and picnic areas. The award-winning Star of the Republic Museum details the rich history of the Lone Star State during its 10 years as a nation. Barrington Living History Farm features the 1850s home of the last president of the Republic where costumed interpreters demonstrate skills from that era.

BURTON RAILROAD DEPOT, MT. ZION HISTORICAL CHAPEL The Burton Heritage Society maintains and preserves the Burton Railroad Depot and Mt. Zion Historical Chapel. JOHN P. COLES HOME TOURS Two of the earliest homes of Washington County and an early 1900s one-room school house are open for tours by the Independence Historical Society. The home of John P. Coles, one of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old 300” settlers, was built in the 1820s and has been furnished to appear as it did in the days of the Republic. Free tours of the Coles home and a dog trot log cabin are hosted on selected March and April weekends. Special tours for a fee and free school tours require advance reservations. OLD BAYLOR PARKS On the west side of FM 50, ruins mark the site of the original Baylor University female department, one of the best places in the state to enjoy springtime bluebonnets. Adjacent to the John P. Coles homes, this park features picnic tables and a playground area. On the east side of FM 50, interpretive signage and a reconstructed bell tower mark the archeological ruins of the Baylor campus for males. INDEPENDENCE VISITOR CENTER The Center is located in the village of Independence in the historic “Adobe House.” The house reflects pre-1836 influences when Texas was still a Mexican colony. Recent restoration discovered that the house is not made of adobe but of fieldstone with a stucco finish. Remnants of one of the few remaining immigrant settlements of the Stephen F. Austin’s “Old 300” in Texas can be found at Winedale, near Round Top.
