Steph Jarvis, director of the Texas Cotton Gin Museum, begins the tour.
Leadership Explores Agriculture The May session of Leadership Washington County was held on May 4th in Washington County and it focused on just a few of the agriculture-related businesses. The day started by traveling to Peeka Ranch Alpaca farm in Burton where owner La Nell McMahon greeted the class and explained the operation. She answered many questions and then allowed the class to pet and feed alpacas. They then toured the gift shop which showcases many of the items made from alpaca fleece. The group then traveled to the Texas Cotton Gin & Museum, also in Burton. The class had the opportunity to peruse museum artifacts and watch a movie about the 1914 gin and the ginning
process with Museum Director Steph Jarvis. Then museum assistant Tynan Shadle gave the class an up-close tour of the gin. Once a year, the 1925 Bessemer Type IV engine gets fired up to gin and bale cotton during the annual Cotton Gin Festival held in April. The class then traveled to Miracle Farm where they had a delicious lunch prepared by their staff. During lunch, several of the boys who are residents at Miracle Farm sat with Leadership participants, talked about their lives, and asked about the adults’ lives. After some question and answer time, everyone enjoyed a tour of the scenic property. At the horse arena, the group learned about the importance of the horse program at Miracle Farm. The tour concluded at the
Tynan Shadel, programs coordinator of the cotton gin museum, leads the class through the gin.
arena where several boys demonstrated what they have learned about horsemanship and team roping while at Miracle Farm. They then got on the bus back to Brenham to visit Pleasant Hill Winery. Owner and winemaker, Bob Cottle, started out with a tour of the vineyard. Climate and soil are the biggest tribulations to grape growing in this part of Texas, but Pleasant Hill grows seven different varieties that are resistant to diseases that other grapevines may succumb. The class was then able to cool off in the wineries 62 degree cellar to hear about fermentation and other processes to prepare the wine for bottling. To conclude the tour, those who wanted to participate in a tasting were able to do so.
Gena Wilimitis, Director of Development at Miracle Farm, takes them on a trailer ride through the property.
The class will be honored at a graduation ceremony on May 24th at the Ant Street Inn in Downtown Brenham. Big thanks go to all of the individuals and businesses who have spoken to, inspired, and motivated the Leadership class members over the past several months. The program is a great success because of all the community support that is received. Plans are underway for the next LWC class to form this summer, and all alumni in the community are invited to get involved and help plan and coordinate sessions. Please contact Jane Hinze if you are interested in being a session facilitator for the 2022-23 program.
