OVERVIEW MELBOURNE IS THE CAPITAL CITY OF THE STATE OF VICTORIA. AS AUSTRALIA’S CULTURAL CAPITAL AND HOME TO OVER FOUR MILLION PEOPLE, MELBOURNE IS HOME TO CHAMBER MUSIC AUSTRALIA AND ITS INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS.
The 7th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition (MICMC) is open to the best young piano trios and string quartets from across the globe and is presented by Chamber Music Australia in collaboration with Melbourne Recital Centre in Melbourne, Australia. For the first time, a 10 minute Australian New Work for Piano Trio and for String Quartet will receive world premiere performances in the Final Round of the 7th MICMC. The individual age of competitors must be 35 years or under as of 11 July 2015. The combined age for a Piano Trio must not exceed 90 years. The combined age for a String Quartet must not exceed 120 years. Following an initial Preliminary Screening Round, and a subsequent Live International Audition Round, a maximum of 8 piano trios and 8 string quartets will be invited to compete in Melbourne for substantial cash prizes and concert engagements including the Musica Viva Australia Special Prize.
There are five stages to the 7th MICMC as follows: • PRELIMINARY SCREENING ROUND • LIVE INTERNATIONAL AUDITION ROUND • ROUND ONE • ROUND TWO • FINAL ROUND Following the Preliminary Screening and Live International Audition Rounds, all ensembles accepted to compete in the 7th MICMC will perform in both Rounds One and Two. Up to 3 piano trios and up to 3 string quartets will be invited to proceed to the Final Round at Melbourne Recital Centre. Chamber Music Australia is delighted to be working with 16 Victorian secondary schools with a strong commitment to chamber music. Each of the 16 competing ensembles will be matched with and visit a school as part of the Schools Link Program.

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS PRELIMINARY SCREENING ROUND AND LIVE INTERNATIONAL AUDITION TOUR The maximum length for the Preliminary Screening Round and the Live International Audition Round is 40 minutes. Each ensemble is required to play the first movement and the slow movement of their chosen Haydn or Mozart work, as well as any movement from the ensemble’s own choice as selected for Round One or Round Two.
