COLUMNISTS

I really am wondering where this year is going. It is June and this is issue number three of the year, meaning we are halfway through our run of six magazines plus the Demolition Directory. We are already working on the fourth issue of Demolition Hub (August), logistical planning for The British Demolition Awards is in full swing and we are almost sold out. I say almost, we can probably squeeze another contractor or supplier in if you get in quick. Our editorial team has been out and about, with Demolition Editor Paul Argent gaining quality, original content from contractors O’Brien, Stott, Shorts and Metropolitan. You can read about his adventures exclusively inside. Regular recipients of hard copies will notice that you have something sat alongside your issue of Demolition Hub – the new sister title, Asbestos Hub. You are all getting that debut issue for free as a double feature for June. Asbestos Hub magazine and media brand will allow us to cover and promote the asbestos industry fully while Demolition Hub continues to act as your go-to bimonthly publication for demolition news. Asbestos Hub will be produced three times a year, with the next issue out in the autumn. Any feedback will be, as ever, very gratefully received. Back to demolition; we look ahead and see September rapidly approaching, with the British Demolition Awards in Brighton at the start of the month, then we are guests of the Russian Demolition Forum on the sixth to seventh of the month, then straight over to Stockholm for Demcon 2021, with the run of gatherings being topped off by the Demo Expo on 15 and 16 September. We will certainly be getting our average air miles up after the past 18 months, while giving you the best coverage of all that domestic and global demolition offers. I hope you enjoy your copy of Demolition Hub for June, we have certainly enjoyed putting it together. Look out for us at the drop of a hat, i.e. in two months’ time.

Best Regards

Decontamination of hazardous substances EDI Special Publication 2021 available online and in print now

EDI has already published the new edition of its Special Publication 2021 – Decontamination of hazardous substances. The main objective is to compile and share information related to relevant hazardous substances that may appear in construction, demolition, dismantling or refurbishment sites. This year, the publication will include information about more than a dozen hazardous substances,

such as asbestos, lead, silica dust, PCBs, dioxins and arsenic. This information will be accompanied by real case studies focused on those substances and their decontamination processes. It will also include articles by different national associations and information about EDI’s main initiatives for 2021. This publication is intended for the general public, not just for specialists. Thus, it is addressed

to EDI’s members, public administrations and, in summary, anyone who may be interested in the subject. It is produced by the European Decontamination Institute Secretariat, with the contributions and collaboration of the members of the EDI working group on Hazardous Substances.

East Belfast tower blocks demolition gets go-ahead The Housing Executive has approved the demolition of two tower blocks in East Belfast. Local MLA Robin Newton has said the decision by the NIHE will cause concern for residents living in Clarawood House and Kilbroney House on the Cregagh Estate. The decision is still yet to be confirmed by the Department for Communities and it is understood that it will take around 24 to 30 months before the flats will be cleared. The East Belfast MLA said: “The demolition of Clarawood House and Kilbroney House received approval at NIHE’s recent board meetings, 31 March and 28 April respectively. This decision needs to be rubber stamped by the Department for 8 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

Communities, likely to be approved in June/July. This is an early phase of the NIHE’s 10-year tower block strategy within the east of the city. “Residents who have bought their flats or who have mortgages will need to enter into negotiations with NIHE. “It is the intention of NIHE to provide public sector homes on the footprint of the sites. However, given the size of the sites it is unlikely all tower block residents will be rehoused in the newly built homes. “This decision, while not unexpected, will cause concern for many residents. I urge the Northern Ireland Housing Executive to maintain good lines of communication with and support for residents.”

The NIHE has said that if the DfC approves the business case to demolish the flats, then it will engage with residents about rehousing options. A spokesperson for the Housing Executive said: “The Housing Executive can confirm that business cases to demolish Clarawood House and Kilbroney House have been approved by our board, and are currently with the Department for Communities for consideration and approval. “These proposals were outlined in our Tower Blocks Action Plan, which was approved in 2019. Following the Housing Executive’s Board approval of both cases, vacant properties within both Clarawood House and Kilbroney House have not been let to new tenants.

Step away from the cookie jar by Jonathan Cox, Marketing Director, Rye Group

demolitionhub.com

Like most people I love a biscuit. I don’t know about you, but it is all too often that I absent-mindedly walk from my office (now at home of course), open the biscuit tin and scoff two or three without batting an eyelid. I’m thinking this may ring true for many people. We do things without thinking about it, things that aren’t good for us and we don’t even appreciate it – we just plough on with the embedded habit. A little bit more about biscuits. Do you remember watching The Office (the UK version with Ricky Gervais)? There is one episode where Gareth has a cookie jar on his desk and every time it’s opened a voice bleats: “Step away from the cookie jar.” DemolitionHUB Magazine | 13

opinion

I’m not sure if the warning is to protect the culprit from their poor dietary choices or because the owner of the aforementioned cookies will take the thief to task with a fist to the face. Either way, it doesn’t matter. An alert system tells the culprit to snap out of their zombie-like approach towards biscuity goodness to protect them from themself.

Guidance notes

Why on earth am I banging on about biscuits and talking cookie jars? Well, here at Rye we were looking again at the NFDC’s guidance on exclusion zones on demolition sites when the conversation in the team moved to the matter of the underlying issues that lead to injuries and worse. As the guidance notes clearly lay out, there are many challenges that need consideration and many areas of mitigation that need careful planning. However, one of the conclusions we came to involved behaviours and mindsets. All demolition and construction operatives go through rigorous health and safety training and detailed site inductions. Notices at site entrances warn people of the dangers ahead and remind them of the importance of PPE. Knowledge and awareness really should not be the problem when it comes to health and safety matters on construction and demolition sites. The guidance notes from the NFDC cover aspects of safe working spaces comprehensively, especially exclusion zones. Different approaches dependent on the demolition methodology; different zone colours based on risk levels, and so on. The plans they provide demonstrate very simply how exclusion zones should be planned, looking at designed drop areas, predicted debris areas, buffer zones and exclusion zone boundaries. There are numerous 14 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

suggestions as to how demolition contractors can protect site workers, from technology to signage and PPE to fencing.

the reason, it acts as a stark warning that we cannot grow complacent or allow site workers to do so.

Human error

As Vice Chair of the National Demolition Training Group (NDTG), Rye’s Managing Director, Simon Barlow is gripped by the opportunity he has to help the organisation and industry improve. We believe that the area of behavioural health and safety is as important as technical practices because whichever physical barriers, notifications and PPE you put in place, the human element cannot be controlled. Only by addressing mindsets, through regular training, maintenance and review of robust management processes and open conversation can we embed true cultures of health and safety. As industry and organisation leaders, we have a duty to our teams, to their families, to society and to each other to protect everyone on and around a site. As with the cookie jar, the audible warning to step away may not be enough. We still need the mindset, the vigilance and the attitude to stop ourselves from taking that extra biscuit and taking the risk that could lead to unthinkable consequences.

While most demolition and construction contractors will display excellent practice in all these areas, we still see accidents, and so it comes back to the human factor. It is almost always the case that accidents could have been avoided through greater awareness, vigilance and reduced complacency. When human error occurs, it is not due to malicious intent – people switch off, they get into a routine and forget what’s good for them (a bit like me constantly reaching for the biscuit tin). This was clearly demonstrated a few weeks ago when we were filming on a site we were working at. The film was a short overview of the project and included some talking to camera, some lowlevel ground footage and some (awesome) shots of the whole site taken from our drone. Once the film editor shared the footage with us, we noticed that one worker (from another company, I must add) wandered mindlessly through a gated entrance and across an exclusion zone while an excavator was shifting arisings for crushing and reuse. We couldn’t see this until the drone footage came back, but luckily the machine operative stopped what he was doing until the area was clear. It was really quite a shock to see but also a useful lesson that, whatever physical measures you put in place, human behaviour can lead to incidents. It was fairly evident from the footage that the person in question just wasn’t thinking. Did he ignore the signage, think that nothing was going on at the time or was he daydreaming? Q

Q

Gary Short: Shorts was founded in 1957 by David Short, and I joined the company in 1985. We started by doing site clearance for motorways and then moved onto offering excellent quality and service in everything from demolition, plant hire to agricultural contracting, skip hire, waste management and much more.

GS: Over the years we have had so many special projects that there are too many to pick from.

How did Shorts Group start out and how has it developed since then?

Q

What are the standout demolition projects from your company’s history?

Q

How has the scope of your business developed over time? GS: Our business has developed around our clients’ needs so our services have grown because of this.

What kind of demolition projects do you work on most frequently?

Q

David Stafford: We take on all sorts of work ranging from small sheds right up to large industrial units/ office blocks.

GS: Our main USPs are our core values and being a family orientated business offering excellent quality and services in everything that we

What makes Shorts Group different?

Q

Tell us about the marketing and tendering process

DS: Our tendering process is all about gathering as much information about the project, understanding the constraints and needs of the client so we can produce a competitive tender. Social media is a great way to show what we are all about and the services we provide, along with word of mouth.

Q

Do you undertake any ongoing training or Continuous Professional Development? DS: Our training program never stops. We have recently carried out loads of courses with the NDTG, including black card demolition managers and gold card demolition supervisors to mention a few. As members of the IDE we also attend regular training courses to gain our CPD points. demolitionhub.com

interview

Q

How has COVID 19 affected your business and how do you see it affecting it in the future?

GS: COVID did affect us, and it was a difficult time for everyone in the industry. In April we made the decision to close for a short period of time following government advice surrounding COVID-19. At the time, my thoughts were around the health and welfare of us all and our respective families and despite other companies not taking such drastic lockdown steps I do not regret the decision. It provided a period of certainty in which to plan the reopen and allow key people to work from the safety of their homes. This enabled us to return to a new way of working with COVID procedures in place. I

do now see light at the end of the tunnel at last, with the roll out of the vaccination, so hopefully there won’t be another lockdown.

Q

What are the biggest technological developments you have seen in the industry and what do you envisage will be the future game changers? DS: Demolition attachments for me have come on so much in the last 15 years and are slowly removing the amount of human interface on the ground. This will surely only get better going forward and reduce the amount of work required by hand.

Q

How do you see the outlook for the demolition industry?

DS: At the moment I feel the industry is really on a high and I

hope it can remain this way for the foreseeable future.

Q

Do you have any notable projects in progress or in planning? DS: We are currently demolishing large projects in Kingston upon Thames, Crawley and Camden with a healthy order book to keep us busy for a bit.

Q

How do you envisage your company in five to 10 years?

GS: At Shorts Group we are constantly growing and investing. We grow our services with what our customers want and need. We hope to see a continuous growth and development of our team and the expansion of our fleet.

G O’Brien and Sons: Shear power

The town of Northwich nestles in the middle of the Cheshire countryside. Home to around 20,000 inhabitants, the town was at the centre of the world for the manufacture of soda ash at the Winnington works of Brunner Mond. The Brunner Mond name has long since disappeared, eventually ending up as Tata Chemicals and it is the huge plant on the banks of the River Weaver that will also be disappearing very soon. The plant produced soda ash up until its closure in 2013, when it was deemed too expensive to run. It lay dormant until the middle of 2019, when County Durham-based G O’Brien and Sons commenced dismantling and demolishing the huge structures on the site. The manufacturing plants on the site are huge. Standing at heights of up to 60 metres, the company is faced with masses of pipe runs, large steel sections and a variety of vessels and machinery to remove and recycle. O’Brien employed a variety of methods to bring these large structures to the ground safely. Some of the taller buildings were reduced to a more manageable size by the use of strategically placed shaped charges to slice through large steel columns, reducing the size of the structures and allowing the remainder to be demolished with a high reach machine. Cutting the steel required engineered cuts to be placed in the columns, weakening them so they would collapse safely when the charges went off. The charges were securely strapped to the columns and detonated with a shaped wedge forced through the metal from the explosion. It sounds simple but in reality, the complex engineering that goes into planning any form of explosive demolition is unbelievable. While the age-old method of burning some of the thicker steel once it is on the ground is still carried out by highly skilled operatives, the modern-day demolition contractor relies on mechanisation to safely bring structures down. O’Brien operates a large fleet of demolition equipment, mainly from the Hitachi stable, and it was a rare example of the Japanese manufacturer’s lineup that was undertaking much of the structural demolition operations. The ZX1000K demolition specification excavator is probably the only one of its kind in western Europe. Based on the ZX8703 excavator, the machine was extensively modified on Hitachi’s Japanese manufacturing line before being shipped to Europe. We are used to seeing the Kocurek conversions undertaken to Hitachi 870 and 890 and 1200 excavators but this example from Hitachi themselves harks back to a more basic style of machine. While this may sound detrimental, you have to remember the machine was built almost 20 years ago. Its longevity and build quality have stood the test of time, to the point where the machine is still seen as one of the main production machines in the O’Brien fleet. Sitting on a large, sturdy undercarriage that is adjustable to allow the machine’s footprint to be increased when working, the central section contains four large hydraulic jacks that lift the machine off the ground, allowing each track frame to be removed to reduce both transport width and weight. The ZX1000 is originally a ZX8703, which weighed in around the 86-tonne mark. After all of the additions, the demolition machine weighs in at over 120 tonnes in full 40-metre specification. From its protected underbody to its cylinder protection, Hitachi didn’t skimp on anything to give demolition contractors a bespoke solution for the demolition of tall structures. The 40 metre front end equipment is of its time. Comprising a three-section main boom, long intermediate boom and dipper, it offers a variety of working heights with the limitation that every change of height requires the dismantling and uncoupling of hoses by hand. couplers on the boom top, just a line of push fit couplings, notoriously hard to release and uncouple under the slightest pressure. While this is oldschool technology, O’Brien say that the couplings are very solid and rarely cause any issues. The 40-metre equipment is usually kept as a single entity with O’Brien and only comes away from the machine when standard digging equipment is fitted. On the Northwich project, the bulk of the works saw the Hitachi constantly attached to the high reach equipment and carrying a new Genesis GTX555R shear. Already running a number of older Genesis models, the appointment of Bristol based Molson Group as UK dealer, gave the company confidence in buying from the manufacturer again. The American manufactured attachments have long been held in high regard throughout the

demolition fraternity in the UK but have never really had the dealer backing to push the product to the heights they have attained in mainland Europe. With the backing of Molson Equipment, it is expected that the brand will reach the heights it richly deserves for its build quality and reliability. The structures at Brunner Mond were of varying sizes and conditions when the team commenced works. While some smaller machines, namely 50-tonne capacity Hitachis, took care of removing the smaller buildings and processing the downed structures, it was the ZX1000K that was tasked with dismantling some of the taller structures on site. The 5.6-tonne rotating shear was mounted directly to the dipper of the Hitachi which handled the weight with consummate ease. According to the manufacturer, the Genesis XT shear is designed to process steel and other materials

more efficiently in scrap and demolition applications, with the equivalent power to other brands all built on a smaller body. Downtime is said to be minimal thanks to the bolton piercing tip, which encapsulates front of upper jaw, minimising the potential risk of damage. Short primary cutting blades position the apex closer to the rear of the jaws and draw material further into the jaws, where the higher cutting forces make the shear more efficient. The smaller body design and lower build height also improve the visibility of the jaws for the operator seated more than 30 metres away. The GTX555R boasts a jaw opening of 762 mm and requires a minimum oil flow of just 340 litres per minute. Regular operator Michael Webb is extremely pleased with the new shear, saying the opening and closing time is very efficient, allowing him to quickly and safely dismantle the large tower structures on the site.

Shorts Group: Investing in growth Despite the recent problems caused by the COVID pandemic, Ascot based Shorts Group’s demolition division has enjoyed its busiest year. To manage the ever-growing order book for its services, the company has invested heavily in new equipment for its demolition work. Already running a large and varied fleet of equipment for its general hire business, the company has turned to Avonmouth based Molson Group for its latest purchases. The latest arrivals to Shorts’ fleet will become its frontline machines for demolition. Their purchase comes off the back of searching the market for suitable equipment to complement its smaller machines 32 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

working between the demolition and general hire fleets. The first machine to join the fleet was one of the earliest Kobelco SK550D-10 high reach machines to enter service in the UK. The high reach has been available to the UK market for a number of years and while attracting huge attention, the uptake has been like buses – nothing shifting for a number of months before three examples left the Molson HQ in a matter of weeks. With an operating weight of 62 tonnes, the SK550D has been supplied with both high reach and digging equipment. The high reach arm offers a maximum reach of 27.5 metres and a tool capacity of 2.5

tonnes. The modular design allows Shorts to remove the 3.5-metre insert boom, drop the working height down to 24 metres and increase the size of the tool to just over three tonnes. The boom system signifies a big departure from the more traditional designs seen around the country, with the long intermediate boom replaced with a shorter version that allows an unrivalled transport height to be achieved. The innovation hasn’t stopped there, with the designers fixing the entire range of hydraulic, water and electrical services to the sides of the boom structure. While it looks different, the accessibility is amazing, demolitionhub.com

case study with everything within easy reach of the ground. The first job for the Kobelco was at a large project in the centre of Kingston upon Thames, where the company was tasked with the demolition of a concrete multistorey car park, shops, former nightclub and eventually a large office block. Shorts’ Head of Demolition David Stafford takes up the story: “This is one of the biggest projects we have been involved in. It’s a typical town centre project with very little space outside the curtilage of the buildings themselves. We’ve managed to get a little bit of pavement to build our scaffolding but that’s about it. demolitionhub.com

DemolitionHUB Magazine | 33

The town centre has been quiet during our initial stages, which has enabled us to get on very quickly with the setup of the site and complete our service disconnection and soft strip works before getting on with the structural demolition works.” Access for the high reach machine was tight, with the only entrance to the job being off one of the busiest bus routes in the country. Arriving at 4 am, the delivery team still had to go the wrong way down the bus lane before squeezing the machine into the small goods yard at the back of the building. Once in position and with daylight arriving, David was able to give the Japanese high reach a good workout on the first section of concrete car park. At the end of the dipper, Shorts has added a new concrete cracker from the Inmalo catalogue. The MBI CR20 is a compact tool with a performance said to exceed that of larger competitors’ offerings. Two huge cylinders provide the closing power for the large jaws, meaning concrete floors and beams quickly succumb to the tool’s power. The hydraulically variable digging boom attachment can be configured within

an hour and allows the machine to wield a heavier five-tonne tool and undertake lower level and below ground demolition works. Although not deployed at the start of the Kingston job, this configuration will come into its own when the bulk of the buildings have been removed. The second arrival from the Molson yard is from Hyundai in the shape of a 53-tonne HX520L, which has been sent to take down the former Virgin Atlantic HQ in Crawley. David said: “We have some big projects coming up that require a larger excavator than we carry on the hire fleet. We will always try and add equipment to the fleet that we know we will use again and again. The addition of the 50-tonne machine is something we have been looking at for a while and with ample projects ahead of us, we knew it was the right time to add one.” The Hyundai has been fitted with a sturdy FOPS guard to both the cab top and front screen, with additional dipper stick protection and auxiliary attachment pipework also added. A Geith quick hitch carries another new attachment, again taken from the team at Inmalo. The MBI RP40 IT is a four-tonne rotating pulveriser and its first task is to take down a two-storey

concrete car park adjacent to the main building. “While we are going through the building undertaking the soft strip works, we can make a start on this structure,” David said. In total contrast to the Kingston project, the office demolition at Crawley has masses of space around it but comes with its own limitations as it is surrounded by blue chip companies who cannot be disturbed in any way. David said: “The building is built around a central courtyard and it’s our intention to get into the courtyard and work from the outside in with the building acting as a natural sound barrier for us.” The Hyundai is being piloted yet again by David. “I have to give them a try out – this and the Kobelco didn’t disappoint me in the slightest. They are both great machines and more than capable of doing what we want of them.” David is very complimentary about the service shown by the Molson and Inmalo teams in getting the machines set up and ready for work: “They’ve both shown the dedication and ability to deliver what we wanted and when we wanted it. Their service and backup has impressed us so far, as has the build quality of their equipment.”

Keeping a tight ship Paul Argent visited the Port of Liverpool to see Howard Stott Demolition take down a concrete warehouse that had reached the end of its days – working round some very live constraints

The Port of Liverpool is the enclosed 7.5-mile (12.1 km) dock system that runs from Brunswick Dock in Liverpool to Seaforth Dock, just north of the city. The original docks have been dated back to 1715 and with constant extension from that point, the port is now the busiest on the west coast of the UK, handling over 35 million tonnes of goods on an annual basis. While the constantly evolving businesses in and around the port developed their own infrastructure, one large concrete warehouse on Canada Dock had stood the test of time. The huge concrete structure adjacent to a newly developed oil terminal had seen its last days of storing dry goods, however, and was earmarked for demolition. The two-storey, 300 by 40-metre building was to be demolished and processed to infill an existing dock to give additional land for an evergrowing recycling business. Undertaking this mammoth task in just a short, 12-week programme fell at the feet of Lancashirebased demolition specialists, Stott Demolition on behalf of D Morgan PLC. While a big concrete structure may sound an inviting project for many, the realities of working on a busy port were realised immediately. Stott’s Operations Director Ryan Noon said: “We have to work around the busy road leading to other port businesses on one end of the building, the new structures being 36 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

built along one long elevation and a berth for tugs within four metres of the other long elevation. Oh, and did we mention the electrical substation situated within the building, which stays live throughout the project?” All this is said as if it is commonplace for the contractor to deal with. “We do have various issues to deal with these days,” Ryan explained. “It just seems to be something that the modern-day demolition contractor has to deal with. We are in the lucky position we have a small and very experienced team who are more than capable of dealing with any such issues promptly and effectively.” The project is under the supervision of experienced demolition man Keith Healey. Despite his youthful looks, Keith has a depth of demolition knowledge many are envious of, and the way in which he calmly approaches the step-by-step demolition of the large structure is a joy to behold. Starting at the tightest point may seem a little strange to many but as Keith points out, it will make the rest of the demolition process a simpler and safer job. Using a 17-tonne Liebherr R 914 equipped with Montabert breaker, Lance Miller pokes holes in the structure above the substation to allow the installation of temporary works to cover the equipment inside. While on the small side for attacking the heavily reinforced demolitionhub.com

concrete, the lack of room between the building and water precludes the use of anything bigger. Once the substantial protection works had been installed over the substation, works could begin to demolish the three-storey office accommodation adjacent to it. With this removed, the team could turn their hands to the main shed itself. The building comprises 17 arched roof sections originally cast in situ and sitting on large post tensioned concrete beams running the full 40 metre width of the building. The weight of these beams is passed to ground via the two main external columns. Despite the proximity of the salt laden sea air, there is very little in the way of failing concrete in the structure. “We were hoping that the steel reinforcement would have corroded and blown the concrete,” Keith said. “Unfortunately, this isn’t the case, and we are finding that it is probably some of the hardest material we have dealt with.” Keith and his team have been fortunate that the big guns from the Stott fleet have been deployed to the site for the project. The machines, predominately from Liebherr and ranging from 17 to 55 tonnes, have been pushed to the maximum to demolish some very heavy and very large beams. Such are the dimensions of the beams that even the large crackers employed by the company are not capable of dispatching some of the concrete structures without preweakening with a hammer. Using a combination of the two larger Liebherrs, a 2019 54-tonne R 956 and 2011 R 954 of similar weight, and the Cat high reach, the first part of the building is carefully dropped. With every large machine in the fleet sporting Lehnhoff hydraulic quick couplers, the machines are able to change attachments in seconds, upping productivity and reducing downtime for damaged attachments. “They are a godsend, but you have to make sure the mating faces are kept clean,” Keith points out. demolitionhub.com

DemolitionHUB Magazine | 37

case study

Pre-weakening of the columns and beams with larger Rammer hammers allows the crackers and munchers to get a grip of the concrete. “There certainly wasn’t a shortage of concrete or rebar when this building was put up,” Keith jokes

38 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

as the spalling of the concrete exposes a mass of rebar almost 50mm in diameter. While the rebar cutters mounted in the munchers and crackers are capable of dealing with certain diameters of material, Keith has chosen to employ a veteran Trevi Benne shear on the R 954 to cut

the exposed reinforcement. “We may end up using a set of blades or even two on the job, but the speed at which we can cut the rebar will be increased massively,” Keith said. The large arched roof sections are dispatched in a slightly different manner, with the high reach machine using a combination of Montabert breaker and Verachtert muncher to take away the arched gable and leave the end of the roof unsupported. The column and beam that has then been exposed is demolished, allowing the structure to collapse on to the concrete floor below. Once this is downed, the Liebherrs are called back in to process the concrete and steel into lengths no longer than 10 metres. Keith said: “Our client is processing the material down to their specification. It makes for a quicker job for us but means we have to drag some very heavy beams out of our way for us to carry on working.” Despite the nature of the work Stott undertakes, the condition of its equipment is exemplary. “We try and keep everything looking and running well,” Keith said. “The kit is all looked after and wants for nothing and despite the age of the high reach and the R 954, they look as if they have only done a minimal amount of work over the years.” The Port of Liverpool project will test the build quality of both men and machines and represents another step for the port in building for the future.

Sennebogen 825 E Demolition makes room for something new at the company’s Straubing factory On-site demolition job? Luckily, Sennebogen has the necessary products at hand in the Rental and Used fleet of its subsidiary Sennebogen Vertriebsgesellschaft. The engineering company from Straubing in Germany initiated the demolition of a paint shop built in the 1960s as part of the plant modernisation. Hans Eberhardt GmbH, a local company specialising in building construction and civil engineering, is providing valuable expertise in performing the demolition job. The company relies on the green 825 E-Series demolition machine, which has the stability, reach and power required for the demolition work in the main plant. Thanks to the powerful 129 kW diesel engine, configured in accordance with the latest Stage V emission standards, it operates in a fuelsaving, environmentally friendly and quiet manner – a major plus when carrying out demolition work in inner-city areas. Investing in the future is demolitionhub.com

important to Sennebogen in order to create jobs and continue the company’s success story. In addition to the other expansion projects such as the newly built service centre on the A3 autobahn, and a second plant specialising in steel construction in Líter in Hungary, the focus is also on modernising the main plant in Straubing’s city centre. Currently, an 85-metre paint shop built in 1964 is being dismantled, another milestone for production standards in Lower Bavaria.

Advantages of the Sennebogen 825

The advanced demolition machine, which has a rear radius of 2.8 metres and specialises in confined spaces, is a perfect fit for the three week demolition project on the company’s own premises. Sennebogen’s 825 E demolition machine has an operating weight of 34 tonnes and a telescopic undercarriage that can be conveniently extended from a transport width of 2.3 metres to a DemolitionHUB Magazine | 41

maximum of 3.5 metres in the working position. Due to the widened contact surface of the telescopic undercarriage, the weight of the demolition machine is optimally transferred into the ground, which ensures a stable stand when removing concrete from the building and when slewing. Equipped with an Oilquick quick coupler, the operator can set the machine up for a new task comfortably from the driver’s seat. The additional hydraulics on the stick enable the operation of various attachments, including those that require high pressures. With Sennebogen’s Tool Control system, pressure and oil delivery rates can be easily preprogrammed so that after one click in the control system and coupling the attachment, you can start work immediately.

Using demolition grabs, shears or hammers, the SENNEBOGEN 825 E easily removes reinforced concrete

With telescopic crawler undercarriage and low rear radius, the SENNEBOGEN 825 E-Series is designed for confined spaces

Optimised for inner city use

Inner city demolition sites are often limited in terms of the space available and this is also the case at the Sennebogen plant. Directly adjacent production facilities must not be disturbed during the project and residential units in the immediate vicinity must also remain unaffected by the operation. Controlled, selective dismantling is the keyword here, which perfectly describes the planned removal and eco-friendly sorting of the construction waste. Like its bigger brother, Sennebogen’s 830 Demolition, the 825 E is a specialist for working in 360 degree mode. In other words, once placed, the machine hardly needs to be moved at all to grab, remove, sort or load material into containers. At the same time, the economical Stage V diesel engine is cleaner than ever, thanks to the latest exhaust gas aftertreatment. Demolition machines in this setup now emit around 97 per cent fewer soot particles and 96 per cent fewer nitrogen oxides than 20 years ago. 42 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

One of the latest demolition companies to join the ranks of the NFDC is Wakefield based Metropolitan Demolition. Run by Michael Hirst, the company name has been long associated with the Yorkshire demolition scene, with Michael’s grandfather undertaking a huge amount of work in the region throughout the 60s and 70s. When he retired, the company name disappeared for a short while until Michael resurrected it in 2015. Originally offering crushing and screening to demolition and earthworks contractors, Michael oversaw the expansion of the company into one of the largest providing this type of service in the north of England. While undertaking crushing work for various clients, the opportunity arose to take on some small demolition projects. Once this work started there was no stopping the company, with more and more demolition projects coming in. The former Koppers coal tar plant had lain dormant for over a decade before its current owners looked into the possibility of starting the site up again. The cost to reinstate certain parts of the plant was prohibitive and the decision was to demolish the remaining structures and use the land for other purposes. Already confident of the high standard of work Metropolitan could achieve as they had worked on previous contracts, Michael and Site Supervisor Adie Thornley drew up a method for the demolition project. Initial surveys of the site showed only a small amount of asbestos lagging around pipes. “Most had been removed in a prior strip,” Adie said, “but we found some traces in very hard to get areas as we commenced the work. This was all removed prior to us continuing work.” With a national haulage company using remaining parts of the site, access was required 24/7, so the project was divided into four separate parts. Only when two large towers are demolished at the end of the project will the road have to be shut, and Metropolitan will work demolitionhub.com

The site contained a variety of steel arrangements, from storage tanks up to eight metres in diameter, pipe racks, chimneys and various industrial structures up to 20 metres in height. While the plant had already been decommissioned, the team encountered a number of pipes that still contained some residue from the coal tar process. Using excavator-mounted shears allowed operatives to keep clear of the pipework and any material they still contained. Using their fleet of Doosan excavators and Komatsu high reach, the steady dismantling of the plant was commenced. Michael has recently started purchasing Rammer attachments from Murray Plant and speaks very highly of the shear currently operating on site and handled by the company’s Doosan DX380 excavator: “It cuts extremely well and despite its size, doesn’t overbalance the machine,” he said. While the Rammer shear will undertake the bulk of the steel cutting work, there are certain structures requiring the use of a gas axe. Michael said: “We’ve found some heavy plate and sections on site and are having to resort to cutting them with oxy. We have Wards coming to site to cut everything to size as they are looking after the scrap removal for us. Thankfully we can have a quick turnaround on bins as they are taking the material just next door to the steelworks.” With the tanks cut down, the large concrete bases are also removed. This is the only ground penetrating work the company is doing on this project as the owners deem it unnecessary to clear any footings and bases as the yard will remain in use just for storage purposes. Using the company’s DX420 excavator wielding a large Rammer hammer, the concrete was broken out. Due to residues in the material, the concrete arisings were removed straight to landfill as a 52 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

contaminated material. The taller sections of the structure are all handled by the Komatsu PC350 high reach operated by the company. Purchased as a very low-hour used machine, the Komatsu was using a VTN shear to remove the large storage tanks on the site. An indispensable part of the fleet, the Komatsu may be pushing the years but offers Michael the ability to undertake a wide range of operations in house. This ethos is also carried through with the recent purchase of a new Scania tractor and step frame trailer. “With the Scania we can ensure we are on site when we say we’re going to be there,” Michael said. “We can move our machines around when we need them to be moved plus, we can also offer our services to outside contractors.” Michael is proud that his company has achieved NFDC status, as is his grandad, and he believes the level of commitment to attaining this status

should be the minimum requirement from any main contractor when it comes to employing a professional demolition company. He said: “We have encountered projects where NFDC membership was stipulated at tender stage, but non-members have walked away with the job because they were cheaper. We adhere to giving our clients a consistent high standard of work with all our operatives fully trained and certified. This costs money and it’s about time some clients realised this before going for the cheapest option first.” With the completion of another successful project imminent, along with a successful site audit completed as we were on site, Michael and Metropolitan Demolition represent the new breed of demolition contractors in the industry. “We don’t want to be the biggest, but we do want to be among the best and I believe the NFDC and IDE represent the best of the best in the UK demolition industry.”

GSMT – 10 years young by Ben Ward, Managing Director

GSMT is now 10 years old. I don’t know where the time has gone. Starting in 2011 with nothing but prior industry experience, GSMT has in the last 10 years recycled over one million tons of metal. From small beginnings on half an acre of our now 20-acre permitted waste management facility in March in Cambridgeshire, GSMT is one of the

54 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

fastest growing metal recyclers in the UK. With continued reinvestment in all areas of the business during this time, the shareholders continue to invest in the future with the installation of a new shredder at our Cambridgeshire headquarters currently being commissioned. In 2019 we moved into our new purpose built offices and continue to grow into these. At the time of building they far surpassed our needs but as we have continued to grow, more than 70 employees’ seats are being filled. We have an unrivalled fleet of specialist Scania HGVs designed around the scrap recycling industry, collecting material from all over the UK. All of our vehicles are equipped with the latest telematics and

tracking system, which enables us to constantly monitor vehicles and drivers to ensure a first class service. In a fast paced, ever changing world, GSMT has adapted and evolved to embrace all means of processing material to enter new markets around the world. Our export facility in Kings Lynn has grown since 2017 to allow exports of 200,000 tonnes of metal annually. The majority of volume is moved by bulk shipments around Europe to end users. Container export is also a large part of the GSMT export process and we can load up to 40 shipping containers a day. A new look for decontamination and welfare provision Anthony Longstaff of Thermac introduces the company’s new fully electric Welfare Decontamination Unit The construction and demolition industry is a sector that is ever evolving. Be it plant machinery or handheld tools, the need to provide equipment that is both hard wearing and cost effective is a constant. Over recent years, a new prerequisite has emerged, and that is sustainability. Economical energy is playing a large part in formatting a company’s pre tendering needs and also providing for post project affirmation. At Thermac Hire, we have seen the evolution of the construction and demolition site in the UK over many decades and have played a major part in adapting welfare and decontamination needs for companies, their employees and the environment they temporarily house. One of the main focuses has been on providing decontamination and welfare accommodation, which is not only beneficial for site 56 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

operatives but is more friendly to the environment. After an intense period of research and development, we are proud to launch the UK’s first fully electric Welfare Decontamination Unit. These units are typically runon LPG but although LPG is more sustainable than other gases, it can contribute to air pollution and has a higher calorific value than premium grade petrol. Our new electric powered unit not only helps to reduce our carbon footprint, but it has been designed with the user in mind. We aimed to create a unit that required less manual handling, was safer to move around and that while used, was a more comfortable experience in all conditions. It has ergonomically designed outer handles and fixed unit moveable steps for easier and safer access and exit of the unit,

it also has wider internal space for comfortable moving and LED lighting throughout. The dirty end compartment is spacious, with a separate disposal bin for easier removal of hazardous waste. Typically, previous units only had cold running water for hand washing. In this case, both hot and cold running water are available throughout the unit for greater comfort and safer sanitising. The clean end compartment has ample room for changing with better heating, more secure lockers and mask charging points. The welfare unit has fixed retracting seating and a fold-over table that can comfortably seat four people. Catering storage is plentiful and ventilation is provided via a ceiling fixed skylight allowing for cleaner airflow. With a separate WC area, the unit boasts more spacious facilities than any of its counterparts. A back up petrol generator is housed in its own soundproofed compartment should the unit need to be self-sufficiently run. One of the main features of the electric DCU is that it has its own technical room, which houses all of the main components such as the negative pressure unit, hot water boiler, freshwater tank, filtration systems and central electrical systems. This drastically reduces the need to remove the unit from site should any technical problems arise, keeping site operatives catered for and projects running to schedule. As it is electrically powered, it is quieter and free from harmful fumes so the unit can be comfortably housed indoors or in areas in which noise needs to be at an absolute minimum. Our hope is that sectors such as construction and demolition look to find more sustainable futures for all sites in the future, from equipment and machinery to disposal of hazardous waste and the production of consumable materials. Duchy Plant Hire expands with 15 new Doosan Excavators Duchy Plant Hire Ltd, based in Truro, has expanded with the purchase of 15 new Doosan excavators ranging from 2.7 to 25.5 tonnes. These were purchased from Kellands (Plant Sales), based in Bridgwater in Somerset, the Authorised Doosan Dealer for London and the South of England including the Channel Islands. The 15 new Doosans include the following mini-excavators: • DX27Z at 2.7 tonnes • DX62R-3 and DX63-3 at 6.2 tonnes • DX85R-3 at 8.5 tonnes Alongside these the company bought these crawler excavators: • DX140LC-5 at 14.4 tonnes • DX225LC at 22.1 tonnes • DX255LC-5 at 25.5 tonnes All of the machines up to the DX225LC-5 are generally available for self-drive rental, with the larger excavators primarily offered as operated plant with highly skilled, fully insured and CPCS trained operators. 58 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

Quality service and performance are key Company owner, Jamie Shelton, said: “Our first Doosan machine was a second hand DX140LC-5 excavator purchased through Lee Sweet, our Area Sales Manager at Kellands. I was very impressed with the support provided for that machine by Lee and the team at Kellands and the Doosan machines we have subsequently bought from them. The service provided by Kellands is second to none, so it was a simple decision to build our latest expansion around the new Doosan excavators bought through Lee and Kellands.” Jamie Shelton founded Duchy Plant Hire and Duchy Civils as part of the Duchy Group, in July 2015. The group also includes Duchy Demolition and Duchy Recycling. Duchy Plant Hire provides equipment for the other three businesses in the group, as well as meeting the needs of the buoyant external rental market in Cornwall. Jamie added: “We started our demolition and recycling businesses last year. Duchy Demolition has

already completed several projects and is about to begin on some prestigious new contracts for the residential market in the county. We aim to develop Duchy Recycling more when we have the extra space available when we move to our new premises at Nanpean near St Austell.” Jamie puts the success of Duchy Plant Hire and the other businesses in the Duchy Group down to their readiness to go the extra mile and to build on existing and new customer relationships. Complementing the rental services offered by Duchy Plant Hire are the group’s highly professional contracting capabilities to undertake demolition services, site clearances, bulk excavations, foundation excavations and cart away services of any size. As a true zero tail swing (ZTS) machine (even with the optional heavy counterweight), the 2.7 tonne DX27Z offers the highest flexibility of movements when working close to walls, coupled with best-in-class 360-degree stability and a low weight for easy transportation. The DX27Z combines excellent performance characteristics with the largest cab for this size of machine on the market. The new Stage V versions of the six-tonne DX62R-3 reduced tail swing (RTS) and DX63-3 conventional tail swing models are powered by the Yanmar 4TNV98C demolitionhub.com

diesel engine, providing a massive 22 per cent increase in engine power over the previous generation models. The DX85R-3 RTS excavator is powered by the same engine as the DX62R-3 and DX63-3, providing 44.3 kW of power at a rated speed of 2,100 rpm. The DX85R-3 excavator offers excellent fuel efficiency, among the best in its class. The bucket digging force is an impressive 6.3 tonnes and this is combined with a traction force of 6.6 tonnes, while travel speeds are 2.7 km/h in the low range and 4.7 km/h in the high range. The DX140LC-5 and DX225LC-5 – the true workhorses The DX140LC-5 combines enhanced comfort and controllability together with a range of features to boost fuel efficiency, uptime and return on investment, with a focus on increased power, robustness and agility. The Perkins 4.5 engine − at the heart of the DX140LC-5 − provides the power and torque of larger engines with a smaller displacement. Presented in the distinctive new machine styling scheme common to all Doosan LC-5 generation excavators, the DX225LC-5 is powered by the well-proven six cylinder, turbocharged Doosan DL06P water-cooled diesel engine, providing a high power output of 124 kW at 1,800 RPM.

Kings Heath Demolition adds Doosan mini and crawler excavators Kings Heath Demolition Ltd, the demolition company based in Redditch in Worcestershire, has purchased new Doosan mini and crawler excavators from Stourport-on-Severn-based Murley Construction, the local Doosan dealer. In the latest batch of new Doosan machines, Kings Heath Demolition has taken delivery of the company’s first three miniexcavators, comprising Doosan DX17Z, DX27Z and DX63-3 models. The order also includes three of the larger Doosan DX225LC-5 22.1 tonne crawler excavators, adding to Kings Heath Demolition’s

existing DX140LC-5 and DX225LC-5 units. Tony Nicholls, Senior Contracts Manager at Kings Heath Demolition, said: “With the new Doosan DX17Z, DX27Z and DX63-3, we are adding mini-excavators to our fleet for the first time. These machines meet the increasing demand in the market for indoor demolition and refurbishment work, involving work in confined spaces and basements. “We are beginning to see an uptick in this type of project, including the conversion of existing multi-storey office buildings into new apartments in urban locations and the new Doosan mini-

The Doosan DX255LC-5 The Doosan DL06P diesel engine is also at the heart of the DX255LC-5 excavator and delivers 141 kW of power at 1,900 rpm. Depending on the equipment being used, its operating weight is around 25.5 tonnes with a width of 3,000 mm (narrow version) and 3,200 mm (standard version). excavators are perfect for this type of work.” The first new Doosan crawler excavator purchased by Kings Heath Demolition was a DX140LC-5 14.4 tonne model. This machine and the DX225LC-5 models subsequently added have so impressed the company’s drivers that Kings Heath Demolition switched brands and has only purchased Doosan in the last three to four years. Tony Nicholls said: “When you add how much our drivers like the Doosan machines to the impeccable service offered by Murley Construction, it has been a simple decision to keep adding more Doosan excavators. “We work throughout Great Britain, undertaking contracts in England, Scotland and Wales, so reliable and high performing equipment is essential for our work, supported by the best aftermarket backup on the market.”

A proud 70-year legacy in demolition

Founded in 1952 by Jim Ferran, demolitionhub.com

together with his brothers and his father, Kings Heath Demolition Ltd has been a leading demolition specialist not only in Birmingham but all round the country. Kevin Condon of Murley Construction was delighted to welcome Jim Ferran and Tony Nicholls for a photo opportunity with the new Doosan DX17 and DX63-3 mini-excavators when they arrived at the Murley premises in Stourport-on-Severn. Shortly after starting the business, Jim went on to complete two years of national service in the British Army, before rejoining the family firm in 1954. Kings Heath Demolition has always been dedicated to the recycling side of the industry. In fact, the company had three yards to store and sort all the demolition debris from its projects, to recycle these materials back into the construction industry. After a hiatus from the industry, Kings Heath Demolition came back to life again in 2016 when John Smith, one of Jim’s former employees, approached him with the idea of restarting the business.

Jim was more than happy with this and excited to see the company pick up where it had left off. Kings Heath Demolition is now owned and run by John Smith and Jim’s son, Paul Ferran, with the support of Tony Nicholls as Senior Contracts Manager. The company offers a very wide range of demolition services including soft strip works; asbestos surveys and removal; on-site crushing and high rise demolition.

Murley Construction – more than 60 years’ service

Also established in the 1950s, Murley Construction has been providing machinery sales and support for over 60 years. Murley Construction represents the full range of equipment from Doosan, which also includes wheeled excavators, wheel loaders, articulated dump trucks and attachments, providing full servicing, repairs, warranty and parts backup from the company’s modern and wellequipped premises, with Doosantrained technicians and advisors. Making tracks

We often hear that the glory days of British engineering have long gone. While some of this is true, the UK still has a number of businesses capable of designing, developing and manufacturing bespoke demolition equipment envied the world over. In a quiet corner of a typically unassuming Leeds industrial estate is Northerntrack. With a history spanning over 40 years, the company headed by Andy Hair manufactures a range of demolition attachments alongside selling the Hydraram range of hydraulic attachments from Holland. Northerntrack opened its doors back in 1990 and has gradually grown its reputation for designing and building bespoke attachments for the demolition and construction industry. Not only does the company build and sell attachments, but it also offers a full rebuild, maintenance and modification service for its customers. The small but highly experienced team in Leeds has embraced the use of the latest 3D CAD design software, which gives them greater flexibility in product design and the ability to accommodate any particular customer requirements. One of the most popular products leaving the doors is the NT range of selector grabs. The popularity of this attachment has massively increased over the past decade as demolition and waste management contractors undertake more selective demolition and recycling work. As we all know, the effective segregation of material brings lower tipping costs and increased revenue 62 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

from cleaner, recycled material. “We have designed and built a variety of grab designs over the years,” Andy said. “Along with different capacities for different excavator sizes, we can alter the shell design to suit any particular application from demolition to digging.” The NT range selector grabs are all constructed from the highest quality Hardox and Weldox steels. While hydraulic attachments make up a good chunk of Andy’s

order book, traditional fixed-leg attachments are still manufactured and are often seen as a costeffective alternative to the heavier and costlier hydraulic versions. “We are able to design and build any muncher, cracker, grab or shear as a fixed version should a customer want one.” Andy explained. “Shears and crackers are few and far between in this design, but the others are still quite a popular choice.” demolitionhub.com

case study Fixed leg grabs within the waste handling sector provide their owners with an extremely robust solution to handling large amounts of varied material and can almost be fitted and forgotten about. The fixed leg muncher design is an area that Andy and his small team have been very successful with over the last few years, having supplied a number of large units to some prominent demolition contractors working on large power station demolitionhub.com

decommissioning and demolition projects. Two of the latest creations to have left the workshop, suitably decorated in the purple and silver colour scheme, have been delivered locally to Ferrybridge power station, where Keltbray is undertaking the huge project to demolish the former coal fired power generating behemoth. The attachments in question aren’t your all singing, all dancing, hydraulic attachments, but a pair of fixed leg munchers designed specifically to work on both concrete and steel. Andy said: “They’re not the first munchers we have built to this design for working on power station projects. We have tweaked the standard concrete munching design to allow the attachment

and excavator to handle steel sections safely.” The tool will be used to handle the large steel sections found on many power station projects as well as the boiler tubes, which cannot be cut with a conventional steel shear and have to be dragged to the ground for processing. The two units sold to Keltbray have been fitted to 50-tonne and 80-tonne machines and have been used extensively to assist in the decommissioning of Ferrybridge power station. A third large unit was also used by Dutch demolition specialists DDM on a recent project at Barking. The muncher was mounted onto Messiah’s Caterpillar 385B demolition excavator and was seen as an ideal tool for the moving and pulling of heavy steel components. Andy said: “A selector grab could

The Future of Site Welfare is here

do the job, but the weight of some of the components and the fact they may be stuck inside part of the building would cause severe strain on the motor and slew ring of a selector grab, no matter the build quality of them. The fixed muncher has the benefit of the cutting edge inside the jaws which can grab onto the steel stopping it from slipping. The weight and power of the host excavator then provide the grunt to undertake the work.” The largest unit supplied to Keltbray weighs in at just over the eight-tonne mark and looked huge in the workshops, Andy said. Out on site is another thing with the purple muncher sat on the end of the PC800’s dipper looking rather lost. “We have built these units to last and when they do wear out, it’s a simple and cost-effective job to rebuild them.” Andy said.

Terry Lloyd, Head of Construction Finance at Paragon Bank Over the course of my career in the construction finance space, I’ve learned that strong relationships and collaboration are the two things that give this industry its edge. The National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC) is crucial in uniting the sector, which is why my work with the NFDC remains such a priority to me. By bringing together more than 80 per cent of the demolition industry, the NFDC remains a crucial resource, championing its members for more than three quarters of a century. Not only does the NFDC help to maintain and improve standards within the industry, it also provides an invaluable platform for the industry to connect, collaborate and share best practice. I’ve been involved with the federation for a number of years, currently working 66 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

as an Industry Service Provider (ISP) Representative. As such, my role includes two key elements. Firstly, I chair ISP member meetings and act as a spokesperson for ISP members, ensuring any comments or thoughts are communicated and that members feel supported. The second part of my role is focused on promoting the benefits of the NFDC membership, while keeping members abreast of any plans within the federation and ensuring they feel they get value from their membership. While I’ve been involved with the NFDC for more than 12 years, my asset finance career has spanned 25. It started in 1997 working for Lombard in a general role, before I joined Bank of Ireland in 1999 in a construction finance specialist position. From Bank of Ireland, I then

joined the construction team at Bank of Scotland in 2002 and went on to become the National Sales Manager of a well-known manufacturer finance company. Leaving Bank of Scotland in 2009, I was then a founder of Dash Commercial Finance in January 2010, again specialising in construction. Dash grew as a brokerage over a number of years before becoming part of Five Arrows Group – it was part of the business sold by Five Arrows Asset Finance to Paragon in 2015. Since then, I have worked in the construction team at Paragon and I’ve seen the team grow from strength to strength. I took over as head of construction in April 2020 and in 2021, we strengthened the team with three new appointments, which will bolster our regional presence as well as our sector expertise. demolitionhub.com

We now have six business development managers servicing clients across the UK, and three business development associates who also provide office-based

support. With more than 20 years’ experience in the construction sector, I have seen many changes and made many good acquaintances and friends in the industry, through both my work with the NFDC and beyond. As the restrictions start to lift, I am hoping to catch up with as many as possible again in 2021 at various industry events and trade shows.

Looking forward in a post-COVID world

During the COVID-19 pandemic I was proud of the way my team adapted, assisting and supporting our customers. This ranged from

restructures and payment pauses through to Bounce Back Loans and the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) – all undertaken against a backdrop of retaining normal lending activities. We are now also an accredited lender for the UK government’s Recovery Loan Scheme, which will see us continue this support in 2021 and beyond, so are well equipped to support customers as they make plans for recovery. The big question in the sector at the moment remains what the future will look like post-pandemic, for the construction finance industry and the sector as a whole. After such a transformative year, many of us have forgotten what it’s like to convene at an industry event. It’s important to consider what role face-to-face collaboration will have in the future of the industry. There is no doubt that some of the changes brought on by the pandemic will be

here to stay and that steps will be taken to provide more flexibility and reduce unnecessary travel. However, I think building relationships in person, through industry events, meetings and at trade shows, will always be invaluable in the people-driven industry that is construction. The NFDC will continue to provide excellent value to its members by creating a space for sharing, collaboration, networking and learning. As we emerge from the pandemic, we also expect to see the kinds of assets our customers require funding for evolve as technology moves forward rapidly. We know the manufacturers are working hard on innovating in order to bring our customers the best machinery solutions possible. My team at Paragon will focus its efforts on supporting both new and existing construction and demolition businesses with their finance needs.

People power by Jacqueline O’Donovan

Finally! Light is beginning to peep through and there is a general consensus that there are brighter days ahead. It is a great feeling to start to plan ahead and look forward to not being in ‘restriction’ mode from week to week, as has been the case for the past 15 months as we tried to manage the pandemic. However, we would be remiss as a sector if we did not take the time to look around and assess the current situation, facing not only our own businesses and teams, but the sector as a whole. There have been many business casualties in recent times. While we have all have been trying our best to just get through the most severe crisis of our time, some have struggled with lack of income and escalating ongoing costs, resulting in some difficult decisions. The pandemic has served as a catalyst to bring a lot of business weakness to the fore. Companies that did not have adequate contingency plans in place struggled at the outset and 70 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

with cashflow compromised, were left floundering as further lockdowns were announced. This was evident right across the business landscape, with the high street and banking sectors badly affected also. Indeed, having spent the last years waiting for the uncertainty of Brexit to play out, no one was expecting a global pandemic to sideswipe us, but it did. But what now? We need to try to get back to some semblance of normality and although initial indications for the future seem positive, there seems to be plenty of talk of more doom and gloom ahead. The demolition and construction sectors face a lot of uncertainty in the coming months, with news of the rising costs of materials, shortages of timber and steel along with the scarcity of raw materials and vehicles set to compound current financial constraints. This is not to mention the lack of skilled workers and labour, which is a huge concern with the sector crying out for staff to hire. Despite this uncertainty, government spending is set to increase over the coming years, with impressive plans to deliver 300,000 new homes, retrofit buildings on a huge scale and major public sector expenditure set for schools and hospital infrastructure to try to meet the current critical demands. Couple this with the recent easing of planning regulations and we are adding to an ever growing list of projects. We are facing a building ‘explosion’ with little in the way of kit to deal with it. It is not only this shortage of kit and recent challenges such as new

ways of working that will hold up our recovery. There is something that there has been much talk of in recent years but just not enough action. People! Or the lack of them, to be exact – from the labourer, brickies and roofers on site, to the lorry drivers needed to deliver to them. It is time for a radical approach, and this has to happen immediately if we are going to sustain our sectors in the years ahead. We desperately need the government working alongside industry groups to step up and promote our sectors as a viable career path for students today. A collaborative approach is urgently needed from all aspects of the construction and demolition sectors and industry bodies. The time to act was yesterday. The seeds of construction and demolition being considered viable career paths need to be planted in young minds as quickly as possible. For so long now, the focus at school level has been on professional services and the aim has been to get the majority of students into college and universities. So much so that the options of learning a trade and becoming a manual worker are not considered as desirable career paths. The reality is that, because of this emphasis on retail and business career paths, we have a massive skills shortage that has seen generations of immigrants arrive to plug the gaps. Brexit has driven a lot of this workforce back home and has left us in a situation that, as the economy unlocks, the lack of focus on growing our own talent will see the brakes go on to our potential for a fast paced recovery. We have to learn to rely on ourselves and be more self-sufficient in terms of labour. Business leaders need to step out too and start promoting our industry and going into schools and spreading the message. The fact of the matter is that a skilled tradesman or a lorry driver can earn way more than a teacher or an office manager and we have to put real effort into showing that these roles are valued and rewarded in order to entice the next generation into our wonderful world. demolitionhub.com

opinion

Leading by example by Richard Dolman Director of AR Demolition and President of the Institute of Demolition Engineers

I was pleased to see the government’s announcement in the recent Queen’s Speech, introducing legislation to let UK industry bodies recognise international qualifications. Any measure that brings skilled professionals to these shores must be welcomed and the Professional Qualifications Bill is an important step forward. In the demolition industry, however, we are now in a different situation. Since the recent inception of our own foundation and master’s degrees, we have academic 72 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

qualifications that are truly unique. So rather than importing qualified professionals from overseas, we instead have our own, UK-developed, globally recognised set of academic qualifications that we can promote in this country and overseas. That’s an unusual situation to be in. In one respect it’s a shame that our industry has never developed such standards before, yet we should all now be proud of what we have created and we should also be keen to see take-up increased. Two cohorts of students have now completed the degrees, with around 20 qualifying with the MSc at the University of Wolverhampton and a further 40 completing the Foundation degree, delivered by the Institute of Demolition Engineers. These students are a combination of new entrants to our industry, professionals from associated sectors and demolition specialists looking to formalise their own expertise. I’m particularly keen to see professionals from within the industry step up and study for these qualifications. In my view, it’s an important step in driving forward professionalism and standards.

As IDE President for this year and next, I am proud to lead by example and have recently completed my own MSc. With a new cohort for both degrees already underway, I believe that it is vital that we continue to promote these degrees as widely as possible, not only among existing stakeholders but also through our personal networks, schools and colleges. We must continue to recruit from all sectors of society and communicate the benefits that a career in demolition can offer. Continuing on a similar theme, I am also keen to develop forums for lessons learned and sharing best practice. The IDE is now in conversations with other industry bodies, notably the NFDC, in collaborating here. I am also focusing on exploring targeted seminars on demolitionspecific subjects, again so that we can learn from each other and support individual businesses to improve our techniques and processes in line with the way the world is changing. As lockdown measures begin to ease and we look forward to some semblance of normality, it will be good to get together again for face-to-face meetings, social events and seminars, with an IDE membership that has thrived over recent months despite the pandemic. demolitionhub.com

awards

The British Demolition Awards 2021 It was with a precautionary outlook that we decided to use our backup date for the British Demolition Awards in September. The date is now confirmed as Friday 3 September 2021. The change of date was in part necessitated by the American

Express Community Stadium wanting a full refit of the awards room, making for an even better experience for our guests. This was alongside our concern that July would be too soon after a potential easing of lockdown this summer to guarantee going ahead.

The British Demolition Awards categories are as follows: • • • • • • • • • •

World of Concrete’s winning return by Ben Chambers

It is with a very heavy but happy heart that, in just under a week’s time at time of writing, one of my personal favourite industry shows has got the go-ahead to take place. The World of Concrete Show 2021 makes its return on 8 June but sadly, due to other work commitments, I am unable to attend after a great three-year run at the event. We look forward to reporting on this event in the next issue of Demolition Hub magazine in August, however, when we will hear from both Informa and our many clients participating at the Las Vegas Convention Center. World of Concrete also represents the first large-scale trade show to return to the US since the pandemic brought in-person meetings to a halt. On the heels of Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak increasing large gatherings capacity to 50 per cent in March, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) and Informa Markets, the destination’s largest trade show organiser, are partnering to bring meetings and conventions back to Las Vegas, igniting the start of a safe economic recovery for the many industries and communities their platforms serve. Nevada’s new directive requires meetings, trade show and entertainment venues to certify through the state’s Department of Business and Industry that they will follow the state’s health and safety requirements and protocols and adhere to the prevention principles that have remained consistent: maintain safe social distancing, wear face coverings and practice good hygiene and cleaning measures. Governor Sisolak said: “Las Vegas has been the top convention and meetings destination for many years. We pride ourselves on providing the best facilities, the best service and now, the safest. We’ve been cautious, but very focused on reopening Las Vegas in the safest way possible for you, our treasured customers, our valued

employees and our entire community. With great confidence in the efforts made by our resorts, convention centres and meeting hosts, I say, welcome back. The greatest place to do business in the world is even better.” Informa Markets creates platforms for a wide range of industries to connect, innovate and do business. As industries and economies around the world look for opportunities to recover in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, exhibitions provide the ideal platform to rebuild communities and revive local economies. Informa Markets is taking a concertedly customer-focused approach to its return to live events, in this case surveying past attendees to ensure the decision to hold World of Concrete is a community driven one. Of those who responded to the survey, which was managed by a third-party research firm, 80 per cent were likely to attend in June and 97 per cent viewed the decision as favourable to the industry. Demolition Hub aims to be back in Vegas in early 2022 for next year’s event, but for next week best of luck to all. Enjoy!
