Welcome to the 11th edition of Demolition Hub magazine, now established as the industry’s go-to bimonthly fix for print, online and video demolition news, views and items of interest. It has been a very busy year so far for the industry (and us) as we enter the halfway point. But busier it will get. We have Hillhead on the horizon and the fourth British Demolition Awards are just a few months away. That’s followed by German super construction show bauma before we go again with the big American events after Christmas. We shall be at and involved in them all and I really hope to see a lot of our readers over the next few months as we have done so far from events already taken place such as World of Concrete, the NDA’s convention and ScotPlant, to name just three. In this issue Editor Toby speaks to Rob Collard for our DEMOLITION DISCUSSION, the SUPPLIER TALK comes from our attachment friends at Winchester-based INMALO and as you’d expect, there is an exhibitor focus for Hillhead 2022. There is an awful lot more for you to discover in this gargantuan 116page issue. Do let me know your thoughts and whether you would like to be involved in August, with issue 12 marking our two-year anniversary. I must just add that time is running out to enter this year’s British Demolition Awards, so please do so ASAP here: www.britishdemolitionawards.com.

Doosan ‘Transparent Bucket’ wins major award in France The industry’s first ‘Transparent Bucket’ system launched by Doosan Infracore Europe, has won another major award in Europe. The latest honour is the ‘Coup de Coeur’ – Jury’s Favourite – Award from the jury of the fourth Grands Prix Matériels Chantiers de France and DLR, which took place in Nantes, France, on Friday 1 April 2022, during the recent national DLR 2022 Congress. The Transparent Bucket is the first safety system of its type for wheel loaders. Due to the blind spots caused by buckets, the area in front of wheel loaders is considered a potential risk area. The new Transparent Bucket device records images at the front of the loader using cameras placed at the top and bottom of the machine. Using a curved projection method, the system displays combined images in real time on a monitor installed in the cab. With this monitor, the driver can check at any time on the screen what is happening in the blind spots in front of the bucket and thus avoid accidents. Another advantage of the Transparent Bucket system is the increased working efficiency that a full view of the front of the machine offers, which is ideal for fast loading/unloading operations or for transporting materials such as earth, sand, aggregates and in waste/recycling operations. After receiving the new award on behalf of Doosan, Gilles Bendaoud, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Doosan

news Infracore Europe, explained: “As safety standards for machines and job sites continue to tighten around the world, sophisticated safety systems have become a key factor in the selection of a machine. We plan to continue to develop safety systems that protect both operators and personnel working around the machines. We look forward to being at the forefront of promoting safer and accident-free work sites.” Patents filed in Korea, North America, Europe and China Doosan Infracore is the first company in the world to develop and apply a front loading function with a transparent bucket and a full vision system for construction machines. This innovation is protected by several patents in Korea, North America, Europe and China. Doosan has also developed other advanced safety systems for the machine lines in its portfolio, such as the All-round Vision Monitor (AVM) system, which displays the entire area surrounding the machine, and an obstacle detection system behind the machine using ultrasonic sensors. Both of these systems have already met with great success with customers.

Cawarden wins place on £1.1bn demolition and land preparation framework
Derby-based specialist contractor Cawarden has won a place on a brand-new £1.1bn demolition and land preparation framework. Now live, the framework has been developed to provide clients with confidence that the demolition organisations they engage with are monitored and audited to ensure they maintain a high level of safety. All suppliers appointed to the demolition project types are members of the NFDC, providing additional compliance confidence for any client.
10 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
Jason Stapley, Managing Director of Public Buying Organisation (PBO), Pagabo, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response we had to the tender process for this framework and are really pleased to be bringing a unique and compliant procurement route to demolition services to the market with such a strong set of companies. “There is a huge focus on the environmental impact that construction projects can have, and so demolishing old buildings with a negative impact and
redeveloping brownfield land is becoming increasingly important for development schemes. But with these approaches come a whole host of challenges that require specialist services. “This framework will ensure that clients can access those specialist services from the firms best placed to support, providing any scheme with the best start possible before redevelopment – and doing so in the most compliant and efficient manner possible in the market.” Oliver Crooks, Commercial Director of Cawarden said: “We are delighted to be awarded a place as an England nationwide supplier on the £1.1bn Demolition and Land Preparation framework. It was great for the Cawarden team to attend the framework launch event in Leeds earlier this week. We are now looking forward to working collaboratively with Pagabo and securing new opportunities through the framework to deliver quality projects while meeting client needs and expectations.”

Finning, exclusive dealer of Cat® machines and equipment, is calling for the best operators in the UK and Ireland to step forward to compete in the Caterpillar Global Operator Challenge 2022/23 and be in with a chance of a trip to Las Vegas. Operators will need to demonstrate agility, speed and precision to be in with the chance to take the UK and Ireland titles. In March 2020 Finning customer Tommy Murphy narrowly missed out on becoming world champion after finishing a close second in a
nail-biting finale in Las Vegas. Contenders must first compete in the UK and Ireland part of the competition, with events running on 27 and 28 July at Caterpillar’s visitor centre in Desford, Leicester. Operators will compete in three challenges using different machines and illustrating different skills and capabilities. In October the top operators from the UK and Ireland will go through to the European championships in Malaga, where they will vie for a coveted place at the final. Data from the Construction Equipment Association show UK sales in the first quarter of 2022 were 2.7% above Q1 last year. This slowing rate of growth in the first quarter is in line with expectations, following the very high levels of sales recorded in 2021, which turned out to be a record year. Retail sales of construction and earthmoving equipment continued to show slowing sales in March this year at 3.5% below the same month last year. This reduced the increase in sales in the first quarter to a modest 2.7% increase compared with Q1 levels last year, reaching close to 8,700 units. Among popular equipment types, wheeled loaders have edged ahead of telehandlers (for the construction industry), to show the strongest growth in Q1 sales at just under 40% compared with 2021 levels. Year-on-year Q1 construction equipment sales up on 2021
weakest start to the year has been experienced by road rollers, showing nearly 40% lower sales than in the first quarter of last year. The most popular equipment type in the UK, mini/midi excavators (up to 10 tonnes), is showing a small shortfall on sales last year, with sales in Q1 at just under 4% below 2021 levels. Sales were higher in most regions, with the north east, Yorkshire and Scotland being the strongest, with sales at 20% to 30% up on last year. Three regions showed lower sales compared with 2021, with the east of England being the weakest at more than 17% down on Q1 2021. Equipment sales in the Republic of Ireland are also reported in the statistics exchange. Sales in March fell back again, showing a 13% reduction on 2021 levels. This resulted in sales in the first quarter falling short of levels last year, at 1.5% below 2021 levels. The construction equipment statistics exchange is run by Systematics International Ltd. This scheme is run in partnership with the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), the UK trade association.

The IATP - Award Certificate Generator
From the creation of the IATP in 2010, all of its members have been able to produce certificates in their own style, using their own format, fonts, description of course, livery etc. in order to maintain and promote their independence and individuality as a training provider. As nice as it is allowing the IATP member to show and promote this unique identity, this has presented several issues when it comes to external parties when verifying training and more importantly, when it comes to identifying fake, fraudulent or manipulated asbestos training certification. Due to the varied number of styles, layouts and details presented on certificates produced by IATP members, it is difficult for the IATP to verify that the training certificate being presented is linked to the training that has been delivered by a particular member. Until now, the only real way of validation was to contact the training provider directly. Due to the variations in styles and detail seen on the IATP members certificates, has meant that many organisations, awarding bodies and even end clients were
reluctant to accept our members’ training. As a result of this, the “IATP – Award Certificate Generator” was born. Our goal as an organisation is to ensure that end users and these who are being presented with IATP members certificates will have confidence in what has been presented. Commencing in May 2022, IATP members shall be able to produce certificates for their training using a standard certificate format. Although standardised, members can still retain and promote their brand, but the layout and the features of the certificate make it
Where the data is not correct, a window is shown when that there are no records or that the data entered does not correspond to that held on the system, i.e., there is no certificate with those details. 16 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
harder to fake and a lot easier to verify. When IATP members generate certificates on the “IATP – Award Certificate Generator”, every certificate is created using a standardised template that displays a unique certificate number which, when entered on the verification page of the IATP website, www.iatp.org.uk, will allow the person checking the certificate not only to verify it, but also view or download it as a PDF copy. To access the “IATP –Award Certificate Generator”, all one needs do is visit the IATP website, www.iatp.org.uk then at the top of the page, you’ll find the “Certificate Validator” link. Alternatively, under the “Find a Training Provider” tab you have the option to use the “Training Certificate Validator” Here the user is given a box to enter the details presented on the certificate such as entering the candidates name and unique certificate number, then where these are genuine, a copy of the certificate can be viewed or if required, downloaded.
In this case, the person validating the certificate should make direct contact with the training provider who has presented the certificate. demolitionhub.com
advertorial
It must be noted, that where a certificate is not in the format seen below and as shown on the IATP website validation page or is not generated on the IATP – Award Certificate Generator, the person verifying it will be informed that no certificate can be located. In this situation it is suggest that the training provider is contacted directly to check the validity of any such certificate. Where members create certificates for licensed and nonlicensed works, each certificate contains a box detailing which modules (Chapter 4 of HSG 247 The Licensed Contractors Guide) or EM and task sheets (HSG 210, the Asbestos Essentials) have been included on the training course, see the “landscape” version below. In addition to the unique certificate number, each certificate also displays a second means of verification in the form of a QR Code. When scanned, the user is presented with an image of the certificate, which again they can download or if required, just viewed and checked against the physical document being presented on site. Additional security measures have also been added to the certificates to put off the would-be forger, such as the IATP members unique annual membership badge, along with an IATP watermark
behind the course title, the candidates name, and training and expiry/review dates*. By introducing this, it will be clearly obvious if any of these details have been altered or manipulated in any way. Should there still be suspicion as to the certificate’s validity, just scan the code and compare them. There’s also one more level of security, each certificate has an area to display a photograph of the candidate whether it’s an asbestos awareness course or an asbestos licensed manager’s course, after all, a picture is worth a thousand words. Now, we at the IATP do not assume for one minute that a certificate cannot be forged, if a bank note can be forged then why not a training certificate. However,
the harder it’s made to do a bit of faking, the less likely it will be for those of an illegal mindset to do it. Members shall still have their identify, their logo shall be displayed proudly in the upper left corner of the certificate with the IATP logo on the upper right corner. The members contact details are displayed such as phone number, web address and email all below their logo. Members can also choose whether to produce their certificates either in landscape or portrait, the main point is that the features and positions will be the same, whichever way they choose. Then the best bit, the cost of this to members… It’s free! That’s right, no cost. IATP members can produce as few or as many certificates as need and they won’t be charged for it. Over the coming months and well into the future, the IATP will be developing further features and benefits for its members and the asbestos training industry. The IATP, along with its members shall continue to promote and raise awareness to the dangers of asbestos, support worthy campaigns and charities, and work alongside organisations, individuals, and authorities to achieve our joint goal.

Milling it over by Paul Argent
Lancashire, one-time powerhouse of the UK economy, has seen many of its former mills, warehouses and industrial complexes disappear over the last few decades. Having fallen into decline, with subsequent failures to the structures of the buildings, they have succumbed to the demolition man’s expertise. One such building with many tales to tell of the UK’s industrial past has just lost its fight and been dispatched by Leeds based demolition specialists, Metropolitan Demolition. As part of a huge warehousing 18 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
complex on the outskirts of Oldham, Metropolitan has been tasked with clearing the site in readiness for a new development of 500 homes. Until recently, the site has been home to parcel dispatcher and delivery giant Yodel, which has used both the Victorian era buildings and more modern structures to store hundreds of thousands of parcels, packets and letters prior to delivery around the UK. As Metropolitan started work on the strip out and enabling works, the delivery service still occupied another part of the site which
meant that service disconnections were carefully phased to allow the redundant buildings to be removed safely without any power loss to the ongoing adjacent business. The mix of structures on the site has given Michael Hirst a variety of challenges which he and his experienced team have met head on. The first building to come down was a five-storey former workhouse. The huge red brick structure was covered in a series of roof lights on a timber and slate roof. The team will try to save as many of the bricks as possible as they are always demolitionhub.com
case study in high demand for construction projects around the area. Prior to the demolition works commencing the slates were stripped and salvaged as was the ground floor of the building which was covered in fine examples of stone flags. Michael explained: “While stripping the materials out in a safe and sensible manner adds a little time to the project, the returns can more than offset this. There is a big demand for quality used building materials, especially as the price of new is rising on an almost daily basis.” demolitionhub.com
With the salvage work completed, demolition commenced on this structure and an adjoining building linking it to the main warehouse and office accommodation. The design of the building was based on a grid system made from structural steel columns transferring the weight from large steel beams down to the foundations. As demolition of the structure progresses, the myriad of steel columns will also be saved where possible as Michael sees potential reuse for the columns. With the link building dropped and material sorted and segregated,
a substantial steel gantry that once held the conveyor system that was used to transfer parcels through the warehouse into a bespoke storage system was dismantled and sent for recycling. The newest building on the site held a modern storage system comprising 30 metre-high racking and automated picking machines. Prior to the building’s cladding being stripped off, the entire inside of the building was in total darkness with the whole system controlled from a single point within the office complex across the yard. DemolitionHUB Magazine | 19
case study
The racking inside the shed was of a relatively lightweight design, gaining its rigidity and strength through the construction process and being tied in top and bottom to the structure. Once this was compromised, the material was easily removed with Metropolitan’s high reach Komatsu PC490-11HRD wielding a selector grab. Working closely with C&D
Consultancy, Michael and his team devised a plan to remove the 30 mhigh automated picking system safely. “The system works from a heavy frame mounted at one end of the building,” he said. “We looked at shearing the sections in place but this would have caused the structure to become unsafe. We would have had to bring in a larger shear to cope with the steel too as its dimensions were too great for our shear on the high reach to handle.
“Consulting with Matthew and Mike at C&D, we decided the safest way to remove them was to clear the racking from around each stanchion before relocating the high reach to the gable end of the building and simply pushing each unit over and landing it in segregated and cleared area of shed and yard. We could then drag each piece out and cut it safely on the floor without putting operatives at risk from any working at height.” Working alongside a smaller 20-tonne class excavator, the Komatsu quickly pushed through the racking while the 20-tonne machine bundled it all up and loaded an almost constant stream of bulkers heading for Ward’s recycling facilities. Despite the building being decommissioned, the team was very careful in preventing and fluid leaks from equipment as the site has a stream running through the centre of it. The majority of the stream passes through tunnels under the concrete yard and this created concern to start with as while they have been sufficient for running 44-tonne articulated trucks and delivery vehicles over, having a near 750-tonne high reach sitting on top possibly wasn’t in the designer’s remit. Subsequent surveys of the tunnels provided sufficient information on their stability to carry the imposed weight from any of the machines in the Metropolitan fleet. Once the first structures are downed and cleared, the biggest building on the site will be soft stripped and primed for demolition. This will involve the team working adjacent to a busy rail line just a couple of metres away. “We are looking at a number of viable alternatives to take this structure down safely and not impinge on the railway line and the residents living behind.” Michael explains. With the project due to run for a number of months, we will endeavour to bring further updates on the excellent work Michael and his Metropolitan team are undertaking.

How did you start out in the industry? I have worked in and around waste and haulage since I was a boy, growing up on my fathers’ farm and working with him full time. In time, I was in a position to purchase my own small truck and a JCB 3C digger and spent time as an owner/driver, including providing haulage and plant services for the likes of Costain building the M3 motorway. In 1994 I established R Collard Ltd focusing primarily on demolition. DemolitionHUB Magazine | 23

Q
Tell us about the evolution of R Collard and its relationship to your father’s business, M Collard I started R Collard Ltd as a sole trader business in 1994. Since then it has grown and diversified to one of the largest privately owned national demolition contractors and waste management business in the south. With over 400 employees the company turns over more than £60m. Services include demolition, asbestos removal, remediation, earthworks, waste management, recycling, virgin and recycled aggregates as well as an award-
winning ready mix concrete made using recycled aggregates. The company has the capacity to process over a million tonnes of waste at nine recycling centres across five counties (Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire), and offers demolition services nationwide. R Collard and M Collard traded independently of each other, with M Collard Ltd predominantly a waste management business, latterly operating in and around Berkshire. In 2018 my dad Michael retired and I purchased the business as one of many strategic acquisitions, merging it successfully into Collard Group. The following year another major acquisition followed with
the purchase of Raymond Brown Waste Solutions, expanding the geographical footprint of the waste business north to Oxfordshire and down to the south coast.
Q
Tell us about the Collard Group working culture. Is there a fundamental company philosophy or ethic? With my background in sport, working as a team is fundamental to how the company works on a day to day basis. Investing in young talent and giving opportunity for people to develop their careers from within are major factors on staff retention and loyalty, which has been the backbone for the growth in the business. Many members of the team have had the opportunity to grow their careers and prospects as the company has expanded and diversified into different sectors. Indeed many team members have been with me since the beginning. Our business has a zero to landfill strategy. We aim to minimise our carbon footprint and segregate and recycle as much as possible on site. Residue that needs a more extensive procedure is then transported to one of our nine recycling centres across the south of England.
Q
What kind of demolition projects do you specialise in? As a company we prefer largescale industrial demolition projects tackling large factories, warehouses and office blocks, including hospitals. This is where we are able to flex our muscles with our extensive fleet of plant ranging from 1 to 80 tonnes.
Q
What are the standout projects from Collard’s history? There are too many to name but in recent years a few stand out in my mind including Frenchay Hospital in Wales, which we won a Gold Considerate Contractors award for. At Greenford we demolished the former GlaxoSmithKlein site and won an award for our innovative use of the adjacent canal; using barges to transport more than

the need to invest in the next generation and to make our industry more attractive and for people to see a career path. This is something that has been at the core of the company with many labourers or machine drivers now becoming site managers, contracts managers or working in our head office.
Q
Do you undertake any ongoing training or Continuous Professional Development? CPD is a key focus for our people and we actively encourage and support our staff in developing their skills and gaining industry qualifications. We were proud that our team scooped three NFDC awards this year – Demolition Operative (Glen Archibald); Demolition Supervisor (Sam Tunnicliff); and Demolition Manager (Simon King). Simon was also one of the first 19 people in the country to complete the IDE and University of Wolverhampton’s foundation degree in Demolition Management.
Q 2,000 tonnes of waste from site, reducing our vehicle movements and minimising the project carbon footprint. In Slough we paved the way for a pioneering urban regeneration project by demolishing parts of the former Horlicks Factory. Using complex cut line demolition we retained the original listed building and iconic Horlicks chimney while providing demolition, groundworks, remediation and material processing expertise across the rest of the site.
Q
What are your USPs? Our expansion and diversification across multiple services means we have an endto-end capability that provides our clients with a truly one stop shop. Having a track record of over 30 years of experience backed up by the professionalism and capability of our team and endorsed by multiple industry accreditations and awards 26 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
makes me very proud and helps us stand out as a trusted operator in our industry.
Q
Tell us about the ongoing marketing and tendering process. How do you maintain your profile? Business development is an absolute must for any forward thinking business. With online intelligence tracking the latest planning applications a core source of any new enquiry and extensive BDMs actively sourcing inclusion on portals and pursuing developers we are able to build a solid tender pipeline.
Q
How do you see the issue of attracting the next generation into the industry? We take the shortage of skills and young talent in our industry very seriously. When I was Chair [of London and Southern Counties NFDC] I continually spoke about
Tell us about your engagement in the community We are active and supportive members of all of the local communities we operate in across the south of England. We provide financial and in-kind support to all sorts of different community projects and events every year. We have an outreach programme attending local schools and colleges with our fleet and presentations suitable for young school children, right through to teenagers seeking apprenticeships. We take social responsibility and community support very seriously and have many open days inviting in local schools and other community groups, colleges and elected officials to our recycling centres. We need to keep adapting and evolving our business to keep understanding the needs of our local communities. Having several open days allows us to keep in contact with local stakeholders and communities. demolitionhub.com
interview
Q
The COVID emergency appears to have passed for now, however it is unlikely to go away entirely. How do you see the demolition industry and Collard Group developing in this regard? Do you foresee different demands on contractors in the medium term? The demolition and construction sector mostly continued through the pandemic but taking hygiene and welfare more seriously than ever before has been a lesson learned for most companies. Being able to deal with the demands of short term absences due to self isolation periods was a challenge; we had to learn to adapt procedures to maintain continuity of service and deliver on programmes very quickly. With the pandemic largely over, there will be other challenges in the years ahead but it’s important that we return to our core focus across the services and sectors that we operate in and continue to deliver for our clients and customers.
Q
What are the biggest technological developments you have seen in the industry and what do you envisage will be the future game changers? The continuing development of high reach plant to ever greater heights is an exciting element for our industry. Thirty-metre machines are now becoming a standard item of equipment for any company, with 50 m plus units in a handful of the major players’ armouries.
Q
How do you envisage Collard Group in 5 to 10 years? We continue to expand our footprint, having recently completed our first job in Scotland. We have previously completed many jobs in Wales and want the company to be recognised as a national contractor.
Q
And what about you personally in a few years? I intend to continue to grow the business and for my sons to become more involved. I would also like to take a more active role in the NFDC again and return to the NFDC National Council. demolitionhub.com
And finally What do you do for fun? Getting out on my road bike; cycling whenever I can. It’s a key part of my cardio training necessary for my fitness levels for motorsport, but it’s also something that I love. I’ve tackled cycling events like the gruelling L’etape, which I’d like to do again. I’ve also run the London Marathon four times for the NFDC. What’s the most expensive non-essential thing you’ve ever bought? A carbon fibre road bike (cycling) What’s your tipple of choice? Vodka and slimline tonic DemolitionHUB Magazine | 27

Wring a Wring a Roses by Paul Argent
The Bedminster area of Bristol butts up against the river Avon and has been a historically important part of the city. Bedminster is Bristol’s famous southern suburb. For many centuries it was a separate town and until 1831 in the county of Somerset. Its history is older than Bristol’s; when Bristol was little more than a river crossing, Bedminster was already an important township dating back to the Roman occupancy. The fast-flowing river Malago runs through the area and borders the site currently being cleared by local demolition and remediation specialists Wring Group. Wring Group has been appointed as the demolition and remediation contractor to bring a former industrial site into a clean and workable state ready for the construction of new student accommodation. The site has had a mixed use over the decades, most recently being used in the motor trade to prepare vehicles for auction. Prior to this, the site had been occupied by a smelter and a tannery with subsequent developments literally burying the past beneath layers of concrete. Wring Group’s task was the demolition of the buildings occupying the site prior to a full reduced dig and reinstatement 28 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

capped off with a piling mat. Site Manager Andy Douglas said: “The demolition work was very simple compared to some of the projects we undertake. Where we have found issues is with the below ground structures and contaminated materials.” The large portion of the site adjoining the busy A38 had over the past few years been concreted over and used as a car park, and it wasn’t until the concrete was lifted that evidence of the site’s former use became truly apparent. “We knew there were a lot of unknown structures below the surface,” Andy explains, “but we found large pockets of hard slag in one corner of the site, right next to the banks of the Malago, which we believe had been tipped there over 100 years ago when the site used to smelt gold and silver brought up the Avon.” This part of the site was remediated first with the concrete lifted and crushed before being stockpiled for later use in the reinstatement and piling mat. The larger, below ground obstructions were dealt with by a newcomer to the Wring fleet in the shape of the first Kobelco SK550DLC-11 in the UK. Wring has been purchasing equipment from Molson Group based nearby in Avonmouth for over a decade and has come to rely on them as a trusted partner to their business.
30 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
Operations Director Dean Wring said: “We have been dealing with Molson for years and have been very happy with the way they look after their customers. We have purchased a significant number of excavators from 14 tonnes up from Molson, mainly from their Hyundai range, but have recently been looking at the Kobelco machines, particularly for their excellent fuel economy. When we bought the Hyundai excavators, we wanted the machines to stand out. Nothing gaudy or offensive to the eye, just something different that advertised what we did as a company.” The blue, black, purple, red, and white liveries all included the text demolition, haulage, remediation, asbestos removal, and environmental services within
the wrap, instantly changing the way the machines looked while giving the company an impressive advertising tool. The new SK550DLC-11 sports the similar livery to the older excavators, this time on a clear vinyl wrap. “At first I wasn’t too keen on the Kobelco blue colour scheme,” Dean says, “but it’s growing on me now.” The SK550DLC is currently the largest dedicated Kobelco demolition machine in the UK with an operating weight as a base machine of just over 65 t in full, high reach specification. From the ground up the Kobelco has been designed to cope with the rigours of heavy demolition work with a heavy-duty variablewidth undercarriage with full length track guards providing a stable base for the machine. Underbody protection has also been beefed up over the standard excavators, along with additional hydraulic cylinder protection. Wring has taken its machine with both boom options; the 28 m, three-piece high reach arm with its additional 3.5 m plug-in section and basement digging TAB configuration. The TAB boom allows the machine to work up to 14.5 m and down to minus 6 m. Changing the boom systems over is a relatively easy affair with both units sitting very low in their respective cradles and almost every hydraulic connection sitting on the outside of the boom, allowing access at almost ground level, unheard of from many demolitionhub.com

demolition machine manufacturers. A sturdy hook and hydraulic pin system connect the boom to the boom foot, allowing for safe and simple removal of the locking pins. Both boom options will be fitted with OilQuick couplers from Mutley in the next couple of weeks, but Dean had to rush the machine to this project to enable the hidden structures to be removed as quickly and effectively as possible. “We are going to add OilQuick to the entire fleet of demolition machines as they are swapped out,” he explains. “It is the way to go for any modern demolition contractor looking to make the job safer, easier and more cost effective. “The TAB is a very versatile bit of kit with the TAB boom fitted,” operator Justin Edmunds points out. We caught up with Justin as he was undertaking a reduced level dig on the last section of the site. The big Kobelco has been fitted with a huge BMC ditching bucket initially for clearing the top levels of soil to expose the structures below.
32 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
Such is the power generated by the 60 t-plus excavator that Justin easily picks out some of the brickwork and concrete footing near the surface. The material is fed directly through a Terex Finlay 595 tracked screener sited adjacent to the cut. This leaves a mixture of brick, concrete and large stones and a granular soil that is then laid back down and compacted in 150 mm layers. The aggregates are put through a Powerscreen jaw crusher before being laid down as an engineered piling mat.
The new dash 11 version of the SK550D benefits from both a Tier V engine upgrade, an improved cab and a host of other amendments designed to make it a more efficient, productive, and comfortable machine. Powered by a fuel efficient, 13-litre, Stage V Hino diesel engine developing 402 hp, the Kobelco is currently the largest demolition machine from the Japanese manufacturer in the UK. A tilting and fully protected cab keep Justin safe from falling objects when in high reach configuration.

FHOSS
Safety Innovation of the Year Winning the British Demolition Awards Safety Innovation of the Year for Cycle Lane has been a high point for FHOSS. We are extremely proud to have won the award and of the phenomenal feedback it has received so far. Thank you to everyone involved in the awards, and especially the judges who selected Cycle Lane from a very deserving group of nominees. This was our first time entering the British Demolition Awards. We’ve had phenomenal feedback since launching Cycle Lane, and it was actually one of our clients who told us that it was worthy of an award, so we thought, why not? We were up against some very deserving nominees, so to hear Cycle Lane named as the winner was incredible. We know that our products really do improve safety – one of our clients has seen a significant reduction in their insurance premiums since fitting Cycle Lane to their entire fleet, so to have this recognition from within the industry is a resounding signal that our innovations are standing demolitionhub.com
out from the crowd and drawing the attention that we think they deserve. Not only did this award confirm our belief that Cycle Lane makes the road a safer place, but the experienced panel of independent judges thought so too – our safety solutions improve safety, protect people and save lives. Receiving this endorsement from industry leaders and seeing our innovations acknowledged in the industry confirms that behaviour and attitudes towards safety are changing for the better. We all
benefit when safety is taken seriously and as we say at FHOSS, where there’s light there’s life. It is always rewarding and a great morale boost for any team to receive this sort of recognition and the ceremony offered a great opportunity to network with other like-minded folk across the industry. We’re hoping to enter the awards again this year, with another of our pioneering products, which just like Cycle Lane, has been generating a lot of extremely positive interest. Liugong
Supplier of the Year Liugong entered the UK market in 2013, via the then dealer CPMS, who already had a strong demolition customer base through its links with a previous OEM. These customers were encouraged to try the Liugong excavator and following positive feedback from them, CPMS developed a ‘demolition spec’ excavator, which resulted in further sales. The performance of the Liugong equipment proved excellent and the demolition spec was well received. This led to customers purchasing additional machines and more importantly, replacing their Liugongs with more Liugongs. A fantastic success story. Liugong has since introduced new models to complete its product range of excavators and Liugong UK (LGUK) continues to focus on the demolition sector. The Liugong machines are strong, reliable and can cope very well in this application 36 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
with very little downtime. LGUK can now offer excavators from 1.7 t to 95 t, with more new models being introduced this year. Winning the Supplier of the Year award means a great deal to LGUK and demonstrates that our efforts to listen to our customers and then offer a demolition product to satisfy their requirements is all worthwhile. This is further evidence that the Liugong brand is now well received and recognised throughout the industry. Liugong will continue to support the various industry bodies in the UK, including Demolition Hub, for years to come. Of course, it is not all about the product. We also provide a first class aftersales support service, which goes a long way to assist in winning this award. On a final note, we would like to thank our customers for choosing Liugong again and again. demolitionhub.com

CONEXPO-CON/AGG Show Director, Dana Wuesthoff
CONEXPO-CON/ AGG, brings success to firms globally CONEXPO-CON/AGG is slated to return to Las Vegas on 14-18 March 2023. The show has gained a reputation for bringing results to global attendees and exhibitors and is working to expand that reputation for 2023. Considered one of the “Big 3” construction equipment trade shows globally, with the others held in Germany and France, CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE is the largest construction trade show in the western hemisphere and is expected to bring in more than 130,000 attendees to see more than 250,000 m3 of exhibits at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Jorge Cuartero, Director General of ANMOPYC, the Spanish association of manufacturers of construction and mining equipment, said: “For us CONEXPO-CON/ AGG is the best platform to reach customers from the US as well as from the world, especially Central and South America. The show features the latest equipment, products, services and technologies for the construction industry, as well 40 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
as industry-leading education. And we know it will be the event of the year in our sector for 2023.” One of the biggest values for international exhibitors and attendees is the International Trade Center, which offers attendees and exhibitors the opportunity to meet and network with industry peers from around the world. The International Trade Center is hosted by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), co-owner of CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE. “If you haven’t already, now is the time to start putting your CONEXPOCON/AGG and IFPE plans together,” said Show Director Dana Wuesthoff. “Whether you are an exhibitor or attendee, start planning now. Knowing who from your team will get the most value out of coming and what you hope to accomplish is the best way to make this show a positive investment in your company’s future.” Spanish Machinery parts provider Blumaq described CONEXPO-CON/AGG as an “unmissable event”. Marketing
Manager Juan Manuel Buils said: “Blumaq’s participation in the 2020 show has resulted in an increase in visibility and sales for our brand. We have exhibited before at CONEXPOCON/AGG, the best and largest showcase in the American heavy machinery and spare parts market, and as a result, we have generated a large number of leads and even closed sales at the fair itself.” Back in the UK, electrical and fabrication specialists Ventola Projects Ltd from Leicester came away from the 2020 show with six figures in orders and a huge jump in export business. Managing Director Mick Ventola said: “We departed Las Vegas in 2020 with a confirmed order of $60,000, and further orders totaling more than $100,000 weeks later. We have taken our exporting from approximately 40% of our turnover in 2019/20 to now almost 90% in 2021/22. Our forecasts show our turnover to continue an upward trend, even during these uncertain times.” Kim MacDonald of Canadian professional services firm 13 FACTORS said: “It is such a huge event, of people and organisations, acres of exhibits and dozens of mini events inside the venue. Even if you have a show plan built, if you are an international exhibitor or attendee, connect with the AEM-International Trade Centre team before, or on day one. The centre became my go-to hub, and I am looking forward to using it even more in 2023.” CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2020, hosted 130,000 in registered attendance, with 86% of attendees serving in decision-making roles. demolitionhub.com

Primary project by Paul Argent
With any inner-city project, space and accessibility can be an issue. Cawarden is dealing with this and a host of other issues on a primary school project in Birmingham The Primary Academy is currently undergoing a refurbishment project of some extent by one of the leading multi-national contractors on the education authority’s framework agreement. The project has seen the main contractor build both new buildings for the school as well as undertaking a large scale refurbishment and conversion of the existing buildings. The Victorian buildings in the throes of refurbishment are typical of their era; dark and very short on space. To alleviate these issues, Cawarden has been contracted to undertake a variety of work including roof and floor removal, reduced dig operations and structural alterations. Commercial Director Oliver Crooks explains: “All of the concrete floors and flat roofs were constructed with poor quality materials and have deteriorated over time. A major part of the refurbishment works involves the removal of these structures.” Martin Hurley is Cawarden’s Project Manager for the job and relishes the more awkward projects handed to him. “We have started off with a slight setback due to a change in the temporary works requirements as things have been uncovered,” he says. “We have demolitionhub.com
clawed back the time and are now pushing on well with the work.” With services disconnected and removed, Martin and his soft strip team moved in to remove the guts of the buildings. Fibrous material in the extensive concealed ducting caused a few issues. Thankfully, the experience of the management and soft strip team identified the substance and put into place the necessary procedures to have the material safely removed. With the soft strip completed, the attention turned to the slim shore propping to the walls in readiness for the removal of the concrete roof structures. Martin says: “Some of the flat roof structures had been covered in an expanded foam insulation and felt covering. We took this off prior to the demolition work to segregate the material.” Each part of the building was approached as a single entity with first floors propped to allow the removal of the roof. Once this was removed, the props followed and the floor was taken out. With sufficient headroom revealed, the ground floor could then be broken out, removed and excavated to a depth of 300 mm to allow insulation and a reinforced concrete floor to be installed. Some of the newer extensions DemolitionHUB Magazine | 43

to the existing Victorian building had more modern construction methods with timber joists supporting a built-up felt roofing system. Again, this was stripped off as carefully as possible to ensure materials were segregated for recycling before most of the joists were stripped out. Martin says: “We have left several joists in situ to keep the structural integrity of the walls in place.” While hand demolition and power tools provided the power to remove the timber structure, something with a little more oomph was required to remove the concrete elements of the job. With a large fleet well suited to the demolition and civils work it undertakes, Cawarden looked at the project differently. Instead of having to provide extensive exhaust extraction systems and deal with the issues of refuelling vehicles in a live school environment, the company decided to employ electric vehicles. Cawarden hired a ‘traditional’ electric drive Brokk 110 from KDH plant hire, which has worked alongside Cawarden for several years. This machine was used to remove the bulk of the concrete roof and floor structures using an Epiroc hammer. Martin says: “We tried to keep the breaking work to a minimum so as to avoid excessive noise disturbance to the school. The deterioration in the concrete meant that the material was removed pretty quickly and once demolished, it was removed through pre-formed holes in the floors to allow it to be passed through a chute to a designated drop zone where the remainder of the electric machines were working.” The team used a hybrid Takeuchi 215 excavator to load the material into several Twinca battery powered electric dumpers with a nominal 800 kg capacity. The silent operation of the Takeuchi and Twinca machines is a great benefit to the working environment. Even more so is the 100% reduction in exhaust fumes, which allows the machines to be used inside the building with no environmental impact on workers, 44 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

staff and children working nearby. The Twinca dumpers are of the walk-behind pedestrian style and are controlled via a tiller style handle. The narrow frame allows them to fit through a 900 mm doorway and thanks to its sturdy high tip mechanism, can easily tip its load into a standard skip. William Crooks, Managing Director of Cawarden and President of the NFDC says: “We run HVO diesel in our excavator fleet in a bid to reduce our carbon impact out on site. The use of battery and electric powered vehicles for inside work is naturally the next step for us. The ability to charge them at break times ensures they are always at peak power and available to work. They are ideally suited to sites where we have a dedicated connection to the power network.” Martin says: “The work itself isn’t the most complex, the location adds another dimension to the difficulty, with almost zero room for access with skips, no parking and a constant flow of pedestrians around the job.”

Of course, a lot of this was in the days of undercarriage replacement when we were based in Chertsey. There was never any pressure for me to join, Dad let me make my own mind up on that score. After studying land management at Harper Adams University near demolitionhub.com
interview
Telford, I got a job selling steel frame buildings and had some good success there over a few years. When I knew I couldn’t progress there any further I had a chat with Dad, he needed someone new in sales to push forward and I needed a new challenge. The timing just seemed right, so I jumped at the chance. That was when I joined the INMALO team in 2011 and I haven’t looked back since.
Q
Tell us the INMALO story INMALO was founded in 1946 by my grandfather, Arnost Polak. In those days he was trading war surplus equipment working out of a flat in London. He had a partnership with an Italian and started making undercarriage parts. He soon realised there was a gap in the market for an independent all makes supplier for undercarriages for dozers, shovels, and excavators. In 1975, John joined the business, working from workshop to desktop. He introduced attachments in 1995, starting exclusively with Mantovanibenne. John sold the undercarriage division to a competitor in 2005 and concentrated on attachments, building a relatively new business to what you see today. Selling the undercarriage business at the right time was crucial. Developing dust machines from snow makers and being first in the UK with fan units essentially led the way for dust suppression. We took this a step further when we introduced the Motofog to the UK market. There was a gap in the market for a small, powerful, and mobile unit and we’ve had strong success with it over the years. INMALO is constantly looking for new ideas and unique equipment in the marketplace. We like to invent the wheel, not re-invent it. We were the first with fan powered dust suppression, and with the Motofogs we were the first with onboard engine driven dust suppression. Today INMALO has a fantastic and varied portfolio of quality equipment. We will be bringing Rock.Zone demolitionhub.com
MBI CR100 (10,000kg) Cracker supplied to HDI for the Hitachi EX1200
to the UK market this year. They manufacture very robust and powerful crusher buckets and rock wheels that will open up new markets to us. We are in extraordinary times, just one challenge after another, but we are in a good place to meet them.
Q
Tell us about the range of products and services INMALO provides and how your relationship with clients works Large stock allows us to say yes to the customer 99% of the time and giving a positive answer from the start gets us off on the right footing. INMALO engineering services offer complimentary backup for all of our equipment: • Hydraulic demolition attachments, • Hydraulic breakers, • Dust suppression, • Hydraulic magnets, • Automatic hydraulic couplers. Each product we represent is a world class leader. The MBI
(Mantovanibenne) equipment is the stallion of the stable. We have worked with MBI for over 25 years and have a constant collaboration to develop, improve and test new products. The MBI range of demolition and recycling equipment is among the finest available, a perfect combination of power, price and productivity. The best commendation we get is from repeat customers. It speaks for itself; the customer that is happy with the product and service will come back again.
Q
Tell us about the INMALO philosophy and practice, and where this stems from Family values; under-promise and over-achieve; honesty and integrity – all inherited from our founder Arnost Polak. The team know this is the only way we can work and they all support the philosophy. We provide personal service, in-depth technical knowledge and support to the customer after the sale has been made. Quality people, quality products. DemolitionHUB Magazine | 49

Q
How do you maintain your profile and gain new business? The more we sell, the more we can advertise our success, the more people get to know about us. Modern electronic media is great but magazines and trade shows are still important. Customer recommendation is still the finest sales aid for new business.
Q
You are members of the NFDC. How does your membership benefit you? Networking and more networking.
Q
Tell us about recruitment. Are there any challenges in getting the right people? There are always challenges getting the right people. Luckily we are a relatively small but highly skilled crew and most of us are all able to cover for each other. We do not have to recruit too often.
Motofog units line up
Q
Do you undertake ongoing training? How does this fit with your ethos? We always make sure all personnel are fully trained in all aspects of safety, whether in-house or on site. Our engineers have factory training for all aspects of each product range we sell. Knowledge is safety
Montabert V7000 recently installed on BooBoo Plant Hire Ltd Hitachi ZX890 – the first V7000 working in the UK
Q
What are the biggest technological developments you have seen in the industry and what do you envisage will be the future game changers? Fundamentally the industry is looking to take people out of the job site. Equipment suppliers are developing ways to use and change tools without people on the ground. Fewer people means fewer problems. For example, fully automatic hydraulic headstocks such as our Steelwrist system are slowly becoming an industry requirement. Q
How do you see the outlook for the sector in the medium term? Crystal ball gazing… Demolition and recycling will always be in the marketplace – buildings have a finite life and need replacing and brownfield sites require regeneration. There is a limit to the extraction of materials on a small island so recycling becomes more important.
has developed the play area for the community. John has chaired the charity for many years and been awarded the Queen’s award for voluntary service. John is also organising the installation of a Czechoslovak memorial for war veterans and freedom fighters in the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. They must never be forgotten.
Q
Tell us about any engagement INMALO has in the community All our office staff are very local, from the villages. We are deeply involved in the local charity that
How do you envisage INMALO in five to 10 years? We have been growing steadily over the past years and this will continue. We aren’t looking to take over the market as some may, but to be the right size to offer a world-class service every time. We invest our profits into stock so we can expand reasonably and sustainably.

Q
Do you have any notable projects or products in progress? We heavily support many of the major contractors working on the HS2 project and we have a new design of crusher bucket being launched as we speak. It is extremely robust and has some unique features that will make it stand out in the market.

Products Tell us about one of your key products The newly released MBI Eagle 3 shear will be a game-changer. More power, better reliability and affordable spare parts to name a few improvements. I can’t wait to get one on site in the next few months. Outline its key features It’s a scrap shear designed to be the most productive on the market. The Eagle 2 is an excellent design and the Eagle 3 will have 25-30% more power. How will the Eagle 3 improve demolition contractors’ bottom lines? For any steel scrap or demolition work it will simply be more efficient. You can either process the same amount of steel in less time, or you can use a smaller machine for the same work using less diesel and with lower running costs – very important in a time of inflation and white diesel.
Tell us about the product’s development We have been discussing this development with MBI for several years. It’s taken a lot of hard work, industry research and customer feedback to design the best shear on the market. Further to that there have been one or two years of very hard testing on site to make sure it lives up to expectations, which it does. The Eagle 3 isn’t on the market yet. It will be in one or two months and there are a few key contractors who have signed up for the first UK models. Once they hit site, the units will sell themselves as people see what they can do.
AND FINALLY Who do you most admire? My grandfather is the clear leader here. He started off in a life of hardship and built a life, business and family to be proud of. He taught the family that hard work will pay off, and that you can be a gentleman in business. What gets you out of bed in the morning? Getting the buzz of adrenaline when making a sale. Or Spike scratching at the door. What do you do for fun? Walking Spike three times a day keeps me fairly busy, but other than that watching or playing sport, skiing and shooting are my main interests. What’s your tipple of choice? Whisky, or beer, or wine, or gin… Apparently, I’m not fussy.

MB Crusher Stand Y1
MB Crusher is exhibiting at Hillhead for the first time and you will find its full range of attachments to fit your heavy equipment, including the rotary screening bucket, the grapple and the interchangeable rotors of the shaft screeners line. Ask our consultants questions about the twin drive system of the drum cutters, or simply see first-hand
MB Crushers’ units. Just around the corner will be a padding bucket on demonstration. Our latest models of shaft screeners are game-changers. On most sites, you see a digging bucket attached to the excavator and used for a variety of tasks. We made two sorting machines that resemble a digging bucket but are capable of much more. Naturally
we kept our signature feature, the ability to easily exchange the shafts on site, and delivered a tool that is practical, easy to use and capable of delivering high production. One of the reasons we decided to exhibit at Hillhead this year is the fact that now more than ever there is a need to recover and process materials. The materials shortage is hitting all industries, causing delays and inconveniences. Attaching one of our units directly to your excavator, skid steer or loader offers the solution to waiting for material to be delivered. However big or small your carrier is, we have you covered – all models on show are available to buy. +44 1519 470 697 info@mbcrusher.com www.mbcrusher.com

Red Knight 6 Stand J8
This year’s Hillhead show will see Red Knight 6 (RK6) take its first stand, bringing key partners such as Komplet, CMB and Nordmann to the show. The Komplet Krokodile shredder will be one of the lead machines on the stand. Weighing 14 tonnes, this popular twin shaft shredder is highly compact and flexible and can produce up to 200 tonnes per hour, depending on the material. Alongside the Krokodile will be the Kompatto 221, the most compact and flexible screen in the Komplet range, ideal for processing soil, compost and C&D waste. The Kompatto 221 has a 2,200 x 1,100 mm screen box and can produce 80 tonnes per hour (material dependent). The Nordmann T-750 is a 19-tonne jaw crusher, with a 700 x 500 mm jaw and a diesel over electric power source. The tracks offer high manoeuvrability and the T-750 is capable of processing
between 40 and 100 tonnes per hour, depending on material. The CMB International RC150 Rubble Crusher, is a trailer mounted jaw crusher towable by a standard 4x4, offering the highest flexibility in terms of site access. Weighing just under 3.5 tonnes, the RC150 is fully road legal and allows for the processing of material directly on site. Richard Dorman +44 1293 862 619 richard@redknight6.co.uk www.redknight6.co.uk

production of the company’s E10e batterypowered model has recently been increased. The Bobcat E10e offers zero emissions, low noise and a width of just 71 cm, allowing it to easily pass through standard doors and in and out of lifts. The E10e is therefore ideal not only for indoor demolition and basement digging, but also many other sites where this type of machine is required such as urban/city centre developments, night-time work and contracts in quiet zones including hospitals, cemeteries, schools and so on. Compact wheel loader market After entering the compact wheel loader category in 2020 with the L85 model, Bobcat now has the largest loader portfolio of any manufacturer in the world and will widen this further when the company launches the second model in the compact wheel loader range, the L75, later this year. High performance is assured by the combination of the powerful Bobcat engine and the hydraulics in the L85. This is complemented by the high stability, breakout, push and pull forces and a comprehensive selection of Bobcat attachments. Already, there are multiple Bobcat loader attachments approved for use on the L85, with more to be announced in the near future. The current portfolio includes a general purpose bucket, light material buckets, a combination bucket, pallet forks and angle broom and snowblower attachments, making the L85 a truly multi-purpose machine. The L85 is equipped as standard with the Power QuickTach system compatible with widely used industry standard couplers. Liebherr returns to Hillhead to underline its credentials as the first choice manufacturer with a lineup of quarry equipment that marries engineering excellence to marketleading fuel efficiency. Spearheaded by the awardwinning TA 230 articulated dump truck, the comprehensive collection showcases wheeled loaders, dozers and excavators as well as associated concrete batching and mixing equipment. And Liebherr’s reputation as a leader in reducing customers’ fuel costs takes on added significance in the wake of a double whammy of rocketing prices and the end of the rebate for red diesel used in construction equipment. Wheeled loaders Liebherr’s XPower machines are the benchmark for highproduction wheeled loaders in quarry applications. Power-split transmission as standard manages the interaction of the hydrostatic drive and mechanical drive, continuously adapting the mixing ratio of the two drive paths without noticeable switching and without interrupting traction. That means the power adapts to the specific requirements of the operation to achieve maximum productivity. The Liebherr Power Efficiency (LPE) ‘intelligent’ system plays a key role in the drive system. The most important components such as engine, power-split transmission and operating hydraulics are coordinated to achieve high levels of efficiency and significant fuel savings; Liebherr’s own comparative tests have shown that XPower wheeled loaders require up to 30% less fuel than their conventionally driven counterparts. Dozers The hydrostatic drive system pioneered by Liebherr is installed on all Generation 8 dozers and guarantees that each machine achieves impressive productivity

mark with UK customers via several significant sales across the country. Scottish contractor Edward MacKay, for example, described it as “one of the best-looking and wellengineered trucks on the market”. Elsewhere, judges for the Red Dot Award for design excellence praised the “unique, edgy and yet dynamic lines” that impressed a jury of international experts. Carrying a 28-tonne payload, the driver views the working environment through panoramic windows and over a short, inclined bonnet for the best outlook of the driving, working and articulated joint area. and class-leading fuel economy but without affecting performance. A newly-designed cab for G8 machines means the operator remains comfortable and productive during long shifts while a choice of blade configurations and options will equip the machines for any application or operating environment. Excavators Liebherr excavators have a wellearned reputation for reliability in demanding applications and they don’t come much tougher than quarries where abrasive materials, dust and mud are part and parcel of the operating environment. Our engineering and sales teams will find the perfect match of machine and front-end equipment to handle any material. There’s a huge choice of machine variations in the 20-104 t range and all arrive work-ready with boxing ring, LEDs, refuelling pump and auto lube as standard. Fuel tanks are larger than those on competitors’ machines, which means less downtime for refilling. The company has been developing its expertise in electric crawler excavators for many years and recent development has seen the introduction of the zero emission R 976-E and R 980 SME-E models to replace the ER 974 B for quarry extraction. Developed and produced by Liebherr-France SAS, they are not simply converted diesel versions but excavators and electric power systems designed entirely by Liebherr. Concrete technology Highlighting products further along the production chain is the LCM 1.0 concrete batching plant combining solid construction, cost-effective transport and assembly and a strong price/performance ratio. Equipped with a powerful ring-pan mixer and producing up to 60 m3 of fresh concrete per hour, the entire plant is designed to give customers efficiency and a long service life but with a sensible price tag. case study
As the UK ramps up its green power generation, another former stalwart of its power network has been given its last rites. Eggborough power station was first proposed in 1961 with construction commencing a year later. Employing up to 300 people in its heyday, the station was designed to generate 1,960 MW of power from its four, 500 MW coal-fired units. The first unit was put online in 1967 with the remaining three up and running by 1970. The ash generated by the station was then pumped to Gale Common Ash Disposal point where it was landscaped to form a 50 m high hill. Generator 4 was finally shut off in March 2018 with the station subsequently decommissioned before being sold to the St Francis Group, which will eventually build new warehouses on the land. To facilitate the new construction works, the huge power station requires demolition, and it was Birmingham based expert DSM that was tasked with the huge project. Work on the massive task of asbestos removal commenced in 2020, a project which is still ongoing. While much of the turbine halls are out of bounds to demolition work, the huge task of external demolition operations was able to advance unhindered. DSM is no stranger to huge demolition projects with tight timescales and it has the resources to enable the safe and quick completion of works ready for the client to begin the construction phase of the site’s regeneration. Much of the demolition work will involve mechanical methods, the safest and easiest way to demolish buildings. But due to the sheer size of some of the structures on site, explosive demolitions will be used to bring structures to the ground, allowing DSM’s fleet of equipment to access them in safety. The first of 76 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

the explosive operations was successfully completed on 1 August 2021, when the first four of eight cooling towers were imploded. With a combined weight of 44,000 tonnes and each standing 90 m in height, the towers were felled safely and as planned on a wet Sunday morning. One of the company’s recent high profile projects was the demolition of Tottenham Hotspur’s old White Hart Lane football stadium. For this huge project DSM invested in a Kocurek converted Caterpillar 6150B demolition machine with a wide range of boom and dipper configurations. This machine has been deployed to Eggborough to assist in the works and has been joined by a host of smaller, but equally impressive kit. Alongside several large Hitachi excavators in standard and Kocurek specification, DSM has recently been buying a large number of excavators from Bristol based Molson Group. Both Hyundai and Kobelco machines now form the backbone of its fleet and have recently been joined by a pair of 86-tonne Kobelco SK850 excavators, the largest Kobelcos currently available in the UK. Our visit to the plant coincided with the first of the Kobelcos being delivered. Supplied in standard reach configuration, the excavator has been through Molson’s workshops to fine-tune it for the demolition world with additional hydraulic services being fitted, a heavy-duty demolition cage and side impact protection. For its first job, the Kobelco was fitted with a heavy-duty MST bucket mounted to the machine’s quick hitch. Working around the coal feeder bay, the Kobelco was tasked with preparing a pad for the company’s high reach Hitachi to work from. Using material sourced from the demolition of lower structures around the feeder bay the Kobelco quickly levelled of an area from which

the high reach could sit in safety to bring down the large building. As the Kobelco was undertaking this task, two large Hitachis were on the opposite side of the concrete and steel structure reducing the height of the building. The sheer size of each of the structures on the site means the volume of material arising from their demolition is massive. Steel sheeting from the external cladding, heavy steel columns along with masses of reinforced concrete all require processing on site and this falls to a team of smaller, 30, 40 and 50 tonne class machines fitted with shear and muncher attachments. As smaller machines are replaced, the newer models are now being fitted with OilQuick hitches allowing rapid

attachment changeover. The project at Eggborough will see DSM undertaking various phases of the demolition and remediation work for a further two years with phased handovers of completed parts of the project as and when they are available.
The demolition of a further coal fired power station is one more step towards meeting the UK government’s pledge to cut the country’s carbon emissions by 78% by 2035. With the help and assistance of DSM, it is one step further to reaching that goal.

industry UK attachment and dust suppression specialist INMALO has listened to demolition and recycling industry customer requirements to ensure it offers the best possible dust suppression solutions for today’s on-site challenges. Charles Polak of INMALO says: “We have a combination of the best and most reliable dust suppression systems on the market, which provide choice and flexibility when it comes to reach, suppression area and meeting the challenges posed by the availability of water or power supplies. With the MOTOFOG and MB Dust Control brand sole distribution rights, INMALO has the most comprehensive range and configuration of onboard power and water combinations available in the UK today. “MB Dust Control’s spray cannons provide the most extensive range of cannon models and system configuration options on the demolitionhub.com
market for demolition, recycling, soil remediation, bulk material handling or quarrying. The MB range has a solution to suit the environment you work in, whether inside or outside. With the largest choice of spray cannons in the world for suppressing odour and dust, the range extends from the SC5 (5 m throw) up to the SC150 (150 m throw).” INMALO’s MOTOFOG range of dust control units are a common sight on many demolition projects due to the flexibility and manoeuvrability they provide. The five models have a range from 15 to 55 m and they are light and simple to transport, which customers need on busy and fluid site operations. Launched by INMALO in the UK in 2013, this innovative dust suppression range with onboard diesel engines has increased in size and throw with the 2018 introduction of the MF60D providing
a range of 55 m. At the lower end, the MFJ10 still packs a punch with a 15 m throw and options on electric, petrol or diesel power plants. With MOTOFOG you just plug in the water and you’re good to go. Two recent additions include the MFX20, which is a really compact unit with mounting options, and the upgrade of the MF20D and MF40D units with a new collapsible mast and increased 270-degree oscillation. Simplifying transport to and from site and improving security overnight was a major factor in this modification and this was led by a desire to meet customers’ varying needs. All of the major functions can be controlled remotely as an optional extra. Moving the Motofogs is made easier and safer with the addition of forklift pockets on the underside as well as the usual lifting eye on top. Other safety improvements include an emergency stop button DemolitionHUB Magazine | 85

on the front panel and an improved drainage valve on the side to reduce the risk of water freezing during winter conditions. Charles Polak said: “We are very proud to be the sole UK supplier for MOTOFOG and to have a leading role in progressing the design. We are sure our clients will be as impressed with the improvements as we are.” DDS Demolition bought three MOTOFOG units for various sites following high demand on its existing fleet. Rather than move them from one site to another, it made sense to increase its dust suppression fleet. General Manager at DDS, Carly Northwood said: “The MOTOFOG range provides the most flexible solution for our demolition sites where dust suppression is required and services such as water and electricity may not be readily available. MOTOFOGs can be

positioned with their own water tanks or can run off smaller capacity water supplies and hoses, which makes them a versatile system for DDS.” As well as fully supporting sales and servicing, INMALO provides a
wide range of both MOTOFOG and MB dust cannon models in its hire fleet. See Demolition Hub’s SUPPLIER TALK interview with Charles Polak on p48

Sandvik QA452 offers enhanced 3-deck Doublescreen solution Sandvik Mobile Crushers and Screens has announced its new QA452, the latest evolution of the Sandvik QA Series products and three-deck Doublescreen technology. Sandvik Doublescreen technology typically outperforms traditional screens by up to 30%, offering a tailored rock processing solution for quarry, recycling and mining industries. With a host of new innovations, Sandvik has engineered the first of its kind, three-deck tracked mobile plant with independent screen angle adjustment and hydraulic screen separation, patent pending. Featuring two triple-deck inline screen boxes with equal size screen decks, each providing 9 m3 of screening area. Productivity Screen enhancements include an 11% longer bottom screen deck to extract more fines. Featuring 88 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
independent screen angle adjustment, the primary screen can be independently adjusted from the secondary screen, allowing operators to optimise their throughput, screening efficiency and product gradations. The primary screen performs as a fines extractor, while the secondary screen performs as a grader. Two processes on one plant, offering exceptional flexibility, excellent separation, accurate grading and massive throughput. Sustainability Sandvik offers hybrid ‘e’ drive with electric plug-in, which means you can choose your most economical and efficient energy source. The QA452 provides a lower environmental impact due to reduced fuel consumption and the latest powerpack offers less operating noise and low emissions. In addition, the hydraulic system has
been enhanced to reduce energy wastage and its hydraulic oil change intervals have been extended from 2,000 to 4,000 hours. This means up to 50% less hydraulic oil is consumed over 10,000 hours of machine usage (subject to oil sampling), saving you time, money and lowering your carbon footprint. Flexibility The primary screen can also be hydraulically separated to gain better access for maintenance and screen media changes. The addition of a new oversize cross conveyor means greater oversize material extraction. This cross conveyor can also be reversed, to allow the plant to function like a two-deck screen with oversize and mid overs discharged together. Each screen deck features end tension screen media using Sandvik’s unique mesh tensioning system. This means faster screen demolitionhub.com

Demolition starts ahead of phase two of £200m Becketwell scheme
Demolition work has begun on phase two of the £200m Becketwell regeneration scheme to make way for Derby’s exciting new 3,500 capacity Performance Venue. Derby-based Cawarden has been appointed demolition contractor for the project and has started preparing for the structural demolition work on the site of the former Pink Coconut nightclub, NCP car park, Padley House, and Dubrek Studios. Demolition of the former Debenhams store, which occupies part of the Becketwell site, was completed by Cawarden in Summer 2020, followed by the former Central United Reformed Church
and properties on Victoria Street in March 2021. A soft strip of the interior of the Pink Coconut is currently underway to segregate the building’s contents. It is anticipated that as much as 95% of the fixtures and fittings will be recycled. Scaffolding is set to be erected shortly, followed by the commencement of the robotic demolition of the first three stories, which will be taken down floor by floor. Cawarden’s specialist highreach demolition machine will arrive on site in June/July to start the structural demolition of the existing buildings, including the Pink L to R: Mick Whitehead, William Crooks, Dan Murray and Malcolm Lowes

Coconut, which was an iconic venue in the 1980s and 1990s. Asbestos removal works are also taking place. Strict noise, dust and vibration monitoring and environmental controls will be in place to minimise the impact of the works on surrounding properties and businesses. Final clearance of the site including erection of the perimeter hoarding for redevelopment is set to finish in the autumn. This latest phase of demolition will clear the way for the most significant development project in Derby city centre since the Westfield Centre in 2007. Work on phase one of the scheme is currently underway, with the construction of 259 one and two-bedroom apartments on the site of the former Debenhams store on Victoria Street. The centrepiece of the development will be a multipurpose public square, which will also be delivered as part of the first phase, with completion scheduled for spring 2023. The performance venue, which will be delivered as part of phase two of the scheme, will be owned by Derby City Council and managed by ASM Global, the world’s leading venue management and services company. It will add a much-needed new venue to Derby’s cultural offer and be a fully flexible, scalable space capable of staging a range of concerts, stand-up comedy, family shows, musical theatre, conferences, and exhibitions. The main auditorium will have a maximum capacity of 3,500 and offer a range of different event configurations including a fully seated layout for up to 2,100. Along with a busy concert and entertainment programme, the venue will also host a wide range of business events. The venue is set to host more than 200 cultural and commercial events each year and attract an additional 250,000 visitors to Derby. It is also expected to create 200 new local jobs, generate more than £10m per year for the area

and provide the impetus to kick-start further investment in surrounding areas of the city centre. Construction on the performance venue is set to commence in January 2023, with completion and handover to the operator in late 2024. Commenting on the start of demolition work for phase two, Dan Murray, Construction Director at St James Securities, said: “It’s great to see work start on phase two of the Becketwell regeneration scheme, which is set to create an exciting and vibrant city centre, where people will want to live, work and enjoy their leisure time. “Cawarden is a well-known local specialist contractor whose team are familiar with the site, having already demolished the former Debenhams store and Central United Reformed Church. “Our programme currently
remains on track, with construction work on the performance venue set to commence in January 2023, with completion and handover to ASM Global in late 2024.” William Crooks, Managing Director of Cawarden said: “We have already successfully completed the demolition of the former Debenhams building and the church next door and look forward to delivering another key milestone in preparing the site for the much-needed Becketwell regeneration scheme. “Given the proximity to other structures and live areas, we will be putting robust environmental controls and strict monitoring measures into place. This includes the use of our high-reach dust suppression system, that captures dust at source, preventing any significant nuisance. “As a local specialist contractor, we’re proud to be helping to bring these exciting regeneration plans
for our home city to life and playing a part in the Becketwell regeneration scheme.” Future planned phases of the scheme include the potential for a range of other complementary uses of the site including new grade A offices and commercial space, a hotel and a multi-storey car park and purpose-built student residences. Funding for the Becketwell project includes £8m in Local Growth Fund investment from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, the private sector-led partnership of business, local authorities, skills and training providers and community and voluntary services that works to promote economic and jobs growth across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. St James Securities has completed many successful projects of this scale, including St Paul’s Place in Sheffield and the award-winning Round Foundry in Leeds.

Finning first-time fix rates soar after remote diagnostics trial
Finning Technology and Remote Services Manager, Nikolaos Kakoudakis
Finning, sole dealer of Cat® machines and equipment in the UK and Ireland, is rolling out a remote diagnostics programme after a successful trial saw a sharp rise in engineers’ first-time fix rates, cutting customer downtime and saving more than 2,500 man-hours. Finning has 14,000 connected machine assets operating across the UK. During the 12-week trial, the remote services team used diagnostics data to identify operational issues with the machines before they occurred. As a result, the remote services team can now boast a significantly improved firsttime fix success rate with connected machines. Because Finning engineers can see what is going on within the machine and run a diagnosis remotely, they are able to ensure they have the correct parts to complete work during their first site visit. In some cases, this advanced 94 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
technology has meant a visit to a customer site isn’t needed at all because the remote service team was able to fix the problem remotely. The result is minimal downtime for the customer, safeguarding their bottom line, and a reduction in the carbon footprint at Finning due to fewer engineer journeys, together with an increase in engineer capacity meaning faster response times for customers. Finning Technology and Remote Services Manager, Nikolaos Kakoudakis, said: “This advanced technology is transforming the way customers access our service expertise, providing us with the data to take our offering to another level. “Eighty per cent first-time fix rate is considered best in class and is the figure automotive breakdown companies quote for their roadside repairs, though in our case our customers may not even be aware of all the work being done in the
background to keep their machines running. The challenge is in providing this across such a diverse product range. “Our advanced technology can signal the condition of their machines, allowing us to prep the parts needed and organise an engineer site visit before the customer even makes a call. In some cases, if it’s a software or configuration problem we may not even need to visit the customer at all and can get them up and running by sharing the screen and updating the software. “This level of service is available to all customers, regardless of the warranty or maintenance agreement they take out, and with both new or used machinery. This saves them from costly failures and unplanned interruptions, and forms part of our global roadmap for service transformation through knowledge sharing across the group.” demolitionhub.com

New atomised mist cannon manages dust in unfavourable conditions
The next advancement in industrial dust suppression has been introduced by the leader in atomised mist technology, a powerful cannon that is designed to fight dust with maximum efficiency. Developed in response to the needs of customers in areas with variable winds, the DustBoss® DB60 Surge® features water propelled at high velocity from a centre nozzle, combined with the industry-proven fan and misting ring system. With three remote-controlled stages and precision oscillation for optimum command over water volume and coverage area, the cannon uses high-powered jets that surge through the wind for over 75 m to suppress both surface and airborne dust.
96 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
The result is effective and versatile dust mitigation in challenging weather for outdoor operations ranging from demolition to bulk material processing and storage. “Our customers operate in very different circumstances; some with high-reach excavators, some in open areas without natural barriers, while others are located in narrow corridors where wind velocity is amplified,” explained BossTek Dust Control Specialist Mike Lewis. “What these customers have in common is the difficulty in controlling fine atomised mist during blustery conditions. So we worked with our industry partners, listened to their feedback and engineered our most versatile and innovative machine to date.”
Lewis recalled that one of the initial drivers behind the new design was a need in the demolition industry. “Several customers described their challenges in suppressing dust during demolition of high-rise structures,” he said. “Some of them use attachments that can be mounted on a high-lift boom, but that can bring its own complications. When we started working on a solution, we realised that this technology would also deliver benefits to a wide range of applications in which variable wind conditions can be a problem, such as port facilities, material processing operations and large outdoor storage facilities.” The DB-60 Surge combines the power of an industrial fan, misting ring and heavy-duty barrel with the reach and force of a central high-pressure spray nozzle. The pressurised spray resists wind shear and even uses the force of the wind to further fragment and carry the droplets, enhancing its dust suppression capabilities. This is achieved without the need for the high water output associated with a hydrant-dependent hose or industrial sprinkler system. In high-wind situations, dust is lifted into the atmosphere and carried beyond the site line over long distances, which can lead to permit violations. Operators of bulk storage mounds, demolition sites, ports, recycling material piles, etc. often mitigate particulate emissions using a sprinkler or hose to saturate a material’s surface. The higher the wind, the more water pressure is demolitionhub.com

required to break through the shear, resulting in greater amounts of water filling the surrounding work area – often 1,100 L/m or more. There are several issues associated with the use of hoses and industrial sprinklers. Hoses typically require manual labour, removing workers from other critical tasks. Moreover, both sprinklers and hand-held hoses contribute to high water bills. Taking compliance and expenses into consideration, the long-term cost of operation for sprinklers and hoses is higher than it might appear. The DB-60 Surge addresses wind, labour and water usage issues. While striving to stay compliant with dust regulations, operators can now better match the water requirements to the specific application. Fed by a standard 38 mm hose with a cam-and-groove quick disconnect coupling, the powerful booster pump delivers as much as 3.5 MPa (500 psi) of water pressure to the centre nozzle, with an output of 140-378 L/m. Controlled by a three-stage system adjusted by a handheld remote, the first stage is highly effective on moderate days for airborne and surface coverage. It uses the powerful 18.6 kW / 849,500 L/m fan and misting ring to deliver millions of fine atomised mist droplets over a wide area, which collide with tiny dust particles and drag them to the ground. For windy days, stage two features a pressurised stream delivered by the central nozzle. On high wind days, operators can use the
98 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
fan, misting ring and centre nozzle for maximum coverage (below). The versatility and coverage area is extended with the customisable 359° horizontal oscillation range and 0–50° vertical throw angle. Using the handheld remote, the operator can raise the spray angle to reach extended heights, directing the 76 m spray to areas such as high-reach demolition or across the beam of large bulk cargo ships. The oscillation range is easily controlled with the left and right trigger of the remote control to customise the precise desired horizontal range. Mounted on a heavy-duty roadworthy trailer for towing at highway speeds with a standard ball hitch, it can be placed by a pickup
truck, skid steer or lift truck wherever dust suppression is needed. As supplied, the DB-60 Surge can run potable or non-potable water, as it is equipped with two in-line 30 mesh, 595 micron filters to avoid clogging. One filter is located at the water entry point to the booster pump, another prior to the pipe feeding the central nozzle. After the initial setup, the DB60 Surge requires no labour to operate. The remote control has a 300-m range, so operators using heavy machinery from high-reach excavators to front loaders can command the machine without leaving the cab. Lewis mentioned that other options are already available, including tower mounting and a version of the company’s popular Fusion lineup, which pairs the Surge with a generator to alleviate the need for a nearby power source. “DustBoss is known for its rugged quality and long equipment life,” he said, “often described as one of the most reliable and low-maintenance pieces of equipment on any job site. Our three-year or 3,000hour warranty is evidence of our confidence in the products. The DB60 Surge is designed with that same philosophy and is built to last.” demolitionhub.com

Change for the better
by Neil Edwards, CEO of the Builders’ Conference
It was a month in which house building was usurped as construction’s busiest sector and when London was knocked from its perch as the UK’s busiest construction region. Both changes are to be welcomed
100 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
April, it is said, is the kindest month; a reward for the long wait for spring. And that was certainly the case in April 2022; a month in which many of the longstanding norms on the BCLive league table were turned upon their heads to bring about some refreshing changes. There have been times over the past three or more years in which the house-building sector has carried the wider construction sector, often accounting for a third or even a half of all new construction contract awards. Similarly, while outlying regions have endured years of highs and lows, London has remained a beacon of consistently high levels of construction demand. In April, all that changed. In a month in which the BCLive league table topped £5bn, roads at least temporarily stole the house-building sector’s crown; and industry eyes switched from London to Scotland. That redrawing of industry norms is evident from the very top of the BCLive league table in April. In a month in which 215 businesses won 319 individual contracts and pushed the league table to a creditable £5.1bn total, Bear Scotland rose to the top of the heap like finest Scottish cream. The company secured a single £740m contract for the refurbishment and repair of the A96 trunk road in north west Scotland.
demolitionhub.com
demolitionhub.com
across just 19 contracts to take the monthly sector title. Regionally, London fell well short of the £1bn that has become the accepted norm, delivering 71 individual contracts worth a relatively lowly £784m. Scotland, meanwhile, soared to £1.5bn to claim the regional crown. The south west (£574m), West Midlands (£381m) and Yorkshire (£366m) all enjoyed an uptick in
contracts
While Bear Scotland was winning big in the north west of Scotland, Amey was winning big in the north east, securing a £530m contract award for the refurbishment and repair of the same A96 trunk road. Those two contracts – together with 30 smaller contract awards – were enough to propel Scotland to the very top of the regional countdown while simultaneously ending the housebuilding dominance of the construction industry. In a month foreshortened by Easter holidays, Kier Group rediscovered its mojo, winning an impressive 21 individual new contract awards to claim the number three position on the BCLive league table together with the prize for the highest number of projects in the month. In the company’s £512m haul, the most notable new contract award was yet another road project, this time in the south west of England. The company secured a £430m National Highways contract to extend the A417 between Swindon and Gloucester. Completing the road overhaul of the BCLive league table’s top tier, BAM Nuttall claimed the number four position courtesy of a £200m contract to provide a new link road between the M54, M6 and M6 toll road. Completing the top five on the BCLive league table for April 2022 is Bouygues UK, which picked up a £200m contract for the construction of a new wellness village at Pentre Awel in Llanelli, Wales. Let by Carmarthenshire County Council, that project will include the creation of a new leisure centre, a nursing home, assisted living facilities and social housing. While the house-building sector recorded a very creditable £1.1bn across 91 individual projects, roads and highways notched up £2.1bn
demand in a month in which even Wales (£235m) experienced something of a resurgence. Cynics might suggest that the increased spend on roads and the increased geographic spread of that spending might have been timed to coincide with local elections. Regardless of its origins, the change is as welcome as the arrival of spring.
Review of BCLive table for April 2022 (see over) • • • •
215 no companies were detailed as winning new contracts during April 2022, 319 no new construction orders were researched by Builders’ Conference all detailed on the UK’s only Live league table of construction contract awards, BCLive Bear Scotland secured overall top spot with a single contract worth £740m, Kier Group was the company with the greatest number of new construction orders in the month with 21 no totaling £512.8m.

Talking development by Richard Dolman, President of the IDE
We have been focusing on training and education most recently. Our CPD Talks continue to run monthly and I am pleased to report they are being very well received. The talks cover a number of topics and are free to IDE members. I continue to promote education within the industry and the CPD Talks can open the conversation to allow us to be more transparent about issues we may be facing, plus we can expand our knowledge. Further information and details on how to register for a CPD Talk are on our website or if you are interested in supporting the Talks, please let us know. Our foundation degree students 110 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
are continuing their studies; and we have exciting news to announce shortly about the master’s degree. Students have been working hard and I’m looking forward to seeing the next cohort of graduates. Attracting new people into the industry either through apprenticeships, further education or providing students at school with information about the roles and opportunities available to them within our industry, is invaluable to us all. Safety is at the heart of everything we do and sharing our experiences so that we may learn from them is crucial. We have
been working tirelessly behind the scenes to further develop the Demolition Safety Forum sharing platform in preparation for its relaunch. The purpose of the platform is to not only promote safety, but to improve safety standards across the industry, protecting our people and all other stakeholders. We will keep you updated with further details as they become available. Sharing information between ourselves, having honest conversations, and promoting best practice is a positive collaboration we should embrace as an industry to constantly push the boundaries. demolitionhub.com

Uncertain times – where opportunity knocks by Jacqueline O’Donovan
Uncertainty seems to be the only certain thing at the moment. The devastating war in Ukraine is actually mind-blowing. To think that in this day and age such atrocities can be happening in a country that is just a few hours away by air is shocking beyond words. Our thoughts are constantly with the people that have been cruelly displaced and driven from their homes and our solidarity is with all those that remain to defend their country. Their bravery is admirable and humbling. The economic repercussions of the war are a huge blow being felt globally. The optimism we all felt as the pandemic restrictions started to ease has been shortlived. Even before COVID-19, there were growing concerns across the demolition, construction and waste sectors about the rising costs of materials and the challenges facing the supply chain. Brexit and the pandemic have brought forward a labour crisis that is crippling the sectors and having a huge impact on project delivery and deadlines. But as things stand at the moment, that is a just one problem in a line of looming catastrophes on the horizon. Material shortages are crippling the sector. Prices of materials, energy and fuels are rising like we have never seen. Businesses are scrambling to introduce price hikes to address what they are facing, but with inflation on the up and with so many moving parts on projects, trying to forecast future costs is nigh-on impossible. With margins already thin and the degree of 112 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
supply chain uncertainty, this process of scrutinising costs and ongoing fluctuating price increases will surely become the norm. So what can we do? We have to seize this as an opportunity to refine our operations. We can try to manage and control our business processes and daily operations more efficiently. It is time to batten down the hatches, so to speak. In construction and demolition, there have been cases of miscalculation of quantities, theft, and wastage of site materials in the past. Now, really is the time to improve our tracking and management of labour, materials and energy. As a waste management expert, O’Donovan has seen first-hand the wastage that can come from sites and projects. Waste statistics collated by Defra from 2016 show that 63% (120m tonnes) of the total waste stream in England (189m tonnes) was attributed to construction, demolition and excavation waste (C,D&E). Ninety per cent of construction and demolition waste is recovered, much of which is heavy materials such as concrete, brick and asphalt, which are reprocessed for future use as aggregates. This still leaves the latest figures showing nearly 5m tonnes sent to landfill, about which little is known. Historically, millions of tonnes of materials delivered to site became waste either through over-ordering or through damage on site. Now is the time to really look
at what is going on throughout our businesses and to inspect and monitor every single aspect of our processes and supply chains. There is no doubt that we can all streamline our inventory, procurement and materials acquisition and look at how we reuse or recycle products, components as well as managing deliveries and orders to site. By improving our tracking and tracing of our materials and their usage, we can help to make our pound go that bit further. Staying on top of our stocks and assets, especially at a time of such pricing uncertainty will help contractors manage those margins and control costs. By keeping our houses in order and running a tight ship, we can minimise wastage and keep accountable data. Procurement teams need to be more involved and accountable for the orders placed and costs allocated. While there is no crystal ball for predicting tomorrow’s costs, preventing waste and tracking materials, parts, tools etc is something we can do in the face of an uncertain future. demolitionhub.com

opinion by Terry Lloyd, Head of Construction at Paragon Bank
On the face of it, all things in the demolition sector appear to be going well – order books are full and companies are having to turn down work because they haven’t got the capacity. But like the analogy of the ship cruising gracefully on top of the water, we cannot see the furious work taking place underneath. Costs and cashflow is certainly a concern for many businesses. The red diesel issue has been widely discussed and companies will no doubt have spent the past few weeks seeing whether the reality of the switch was as bad as feared. Most operators will have simply attempted to pass the cost increase on to clients, some no doubt more successfully than others. The main topic of the day at the NFDC AGM at the Landmark Hotel in London was recruitment and attracting new talent into the sector. It’s an issue most heavy industries are facing as there are simply more glamourous and – let’s face it – less physically strenuous vocations to chose. The recruitment challenge is not a new one for the demolition sector, but it is certainly becoming more acute as much of the workforce edges close to retirement age. The pandemic and the UK’s exit from the European Union have no doubt compounded a worsening situation. According to findings compiled by the Construction Products Association, 223,000 workers have vanished from construction industry over two years since summer 2019. Nearly half of this total number have come from the skilled 45 114 | DemolitionHUB Magazine
to 55 age group, who joined the industry during the booming late 1980s and represented the bulk age demographic in the workforce. Meanwhile, over the last three years, the number of migrants working in construction has fallen by 15%, from over 326,000 to just 280,000, the equivalent of one in seven migrant workers leaving the sector. I heard interesting ideas at the NFDC AGM about how to make the industry more attractive to new recruits and one clear takeaway was for companies to use the grants and funding available to take on new apprentices. At a time when cashflow is under pressure from rising costs, anything that can support businesses should be examined. The fantastic work being undertaken by the federation and its members in setting up and supporting the apprentice Trailblazer scheme was great to hear about. But as a sector we need to recognise it needs long-term change. We have made great strides over the past few years but we need to be greener, cleaner and leaner. We simply can’t rely on pure manpower in the coming years and we need to make better use of technology. I was buoyed by what I saw from the FUTUREWORX 2022 show in Peterborough at the end of March. This highlighted what the future of the industry could look like, with machinery operated remotely
from a safe, clean environment. Generation Z – those born from 1997 onwards – have grown up playing computer consoles; they don’t know an age without the internet and digital technology is second nature to them. Show them a muddy demolition site and they may turn their nose up but let them operate a piece of machinery from an office location and the proposition becomes more attractive. In addition, it’s safer and fewer people on site means fewer injuries. We are already seeing widespread use of remote controlled equipment in the likes of Australia and it’s only a matter of time before it becomes the norm in the UK. Yes, it will require investment but that investment will be worth it to ensure contracts can be fulfilled and work carried out in the safest and most efficient way possible. The sector should also do more to promote the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) elements of the industry to the environmentally conscious Generation Z. Demolition has a tired image and most people will simply picture a wrecking ball. What they don’t realise is that over 90% of old buildings are recycled and reused and how much the industry has advanced in this area. With some sites adopting a ‘no diesel’ policy and introducing more electric equipment, the environmental credentials of the industry can only improve. demolitionhub.com
