hat a strange year. Twelve months ago I wouldn’t have envisaged myself writing the editorial for an industry title on a cold yet sunny October morning while having spent most of the year watching re-runs of Crystal Palace’s best moments (1001 greatest throw-ins) on Sky Sports. But this strange year got a little more distinctive for us as a media company and publisher. We split with our editor a few weeks back and now have the editorial control, planning and focus we have desired since working in the demolition media marketplace. It is for no cute marketing agenda that we are signing off social media posts with #championingdemolition – that is exactly what our philosophy is. We want to move beyond highlighting the negative. We want to showcase UK demolition as a viable industry for youngsters to enter into, during and post education; we want site managers, labourers and demolition operators to be proud of their industry, and contractors to read the good news that continues. Now, on to the magazine. My team have worked together for many years putting together demolition and construction equipment titles and we have picked up a fair bit of industry knowledge in our time. Six years in demolition media has allowed me to attend HillHead and PlantworX three times, Bauma in Germany last year and various waste and demolition shows. Now the reins are off, I hope you will not tire of seeing me at your depots and sites, as my team and I intend to be. But being relative newcomers to the frontline is far from a bad thing. We welcome you – the industry – to get involved and be a part of the Demolition Hub and inform us and our readers of your products, projects and requirements as we go. We are fast learners. Demolition Hub continues to occupy the bi-monthly publication slots and with this edition alongside the final one of 2020 (out in a few weeks), we go straight into the new year with January’s first of six 2021 editions. So why Hub? Well, our team have produced the end of year bible and online resource the Demolition Directory; we run the British Demolition Awards (read about next year’s event on page 34); the bespoke demolition job board – DemolitionCareers.co.uk (p70); and of course, we have a vested interest in the magazine’s quality and success. We have integrated them under one banner, for your (and our) ease. I look forward to speaking with as many of you as possible before Christmas and want to give a massive thank you for your support. It means an awful lot. Now it is time for us to showcase the industry.

interview

THE DEMOLITION DISCUSSION – Nick Brown

To kick off our Demolition Discussion interview series, Demolition Hub speaks to Nick Brown, Managing Director of Brown and Mason, about the past, present and future of the company, its products and the outlook for the industry in general

How did business start?

The business was started by Alfred Brown, my grandfather. He operated a haulage company that had won the contract to move the bricks arising from the Margate gas works in Kent. At the end of the contract in 1961, Alfred Brown and Albert Mason, the site foreman for the company that carried out the demolition of the gas holders, went into business and by combining their individual skill sets, they started to tender for, and win, contracts to dismantle gas works in the Kent and south east London area. Albert eventually chose to leave the company. Alfred Brown was joined by his son, Terry, and eventually his son-in-law, Michael Sabga. Both men started at grassroots level labouring on site and gained experience from a variety of projects across several sectors of the industry from gas holders to domestic dwellings.

How has the company developed since then?

In the early 1980s, the company secured two large contracts, one in Kent and one in Cheshire, which proved to be key indicators of 6 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

the path to specialising in the sector of heavy industrial demolition projects. Upon Alfred’s death in 1984, Terry invested in plant and transport to further enhance the company’s reputation in the heavy industrial sector. With drive and keen business acumen, opportunities arose, the company built on its reputation and began working for international clients within the power, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. During this period I, along with my brothers Richard and Lee, joined the company on leaving school and continued in the family business working on large industrial projects. Like our father, we began our careers on an unofficial apprenticeship, starting at entry level and learning the ropes in all areas of the business. We were joined in 1998 by our sister, Laura, who worked in an administrative capacity within the head office. The new millennium saw the third generation begin to take the reins and take up directorships in various areas within the organisation.

In 2014, I became Managing Director. The company ethos continues and the practical approach of directly employing all employees and owning key plant and equipment continued to give Brown and Mason the edge over other contractors in the very specialist sector of heavy industrial demolition.

What kind of projects do you work on most frequently? We are currently carrying out works in the power generation sector and relate to the

decommissioning, dismantling and demolition of power stations. In addition, we have frequently carried out large, complex demolition and dismantling projects in the petrochemical, pharmaceutical and oil and gas sectors.

What are the standout projects from Brown and Mason’s history?

Greenwich Gas Works – demolition of 350,000m³ gas holder. Beckton Gas Works – during one of our contracts for North Thames Gas at the Beckton Gas Works site we became film extras for the day and helped create Vietnam in East London for the film “Full Metal Jacket”. Chatham Dockyard and Warrington Paper Mill – our first two large industrial demolition contracts, carried out in the early 1980s. Blackwall Point Power Station in Greenwich, London – in 1986, Brown and Mason engaged with the CEGB and carried out the asbestos removal and demolition in its first power station contract. Headquarters of the Department of the Environment in Marsham Street, London – this landmark project in 2002 was at the time purported to be the largest ever city centre demolition contract undertaken in the UK.

wartime bunkers, hence the depth of concrete, and we had to apply for a special dispensation to bring explosives into the capital for use on this project. The contract also included extensive internal asbestos removal and temporary works to the existing two-storey deep basement

retaining walls. The contract had a value of £9.8m. The largest petrochemical project was carried out in Redcar on Teesside between September 2010 and September 2012. With a value of £23.5m and a duration of two years, this project involved the asbestos

And the biggest ones in your time?

To answer this, I want to break it down into sector and give an example of each. The largest city centre project was Marsham Street, London between March 2002 and November 2003. The demolition of the former Headquarters of the Department of the Environment was at the time the largest city centre demolition contract undertaken in the UK. This major contract involved the demolition of 3No. reinforced concrete 20-storey-high office blocks, 3No. “bomb proof” bunker structures with reinforced concrete walls and roofs up to three metres thick. removal, demolition and site clearance of various process plant and structures, tank farms, cooling towers plus associated cables, pipework and equipment, within a chemical manufacturing facility that was still primarily operational. Our largest power station contract commenced in February 2017 and is currently in progress near Alloa, Clackmannanshire in Scotland. This was named as Europe’s biggest polluter in 2003 and is the largest power station demolished in Europe to date. Our contract comprises the asbestos removal, demolition and site clearance of the now redundant station and has approximate value of £46m.

How has the scope of your business developed? Are you in the process of making any developments?

B&M began as a demolition and transport business, over the years it has developed into a turnkey industrial decommissioning, dismantling and demolition business. We have recently added ground remediation to our list of services after securing a multimillion-pound contract. This additional service complements project delivery for our clients. We are also currently expanding into Europe and have recently established a subsidiary in the Netherlands, where we have already secured our first power station decommissioning project.

Tell us about the marketing and tendering process. To what extent is it proactive advertising and marketing, and to what extent is it merely tendering for jobs?

Our marketing is mainly through our social media, sharing our biggest messages and the aim is to increase our following on all our platforms. We rely heavily on our track record, repeat business and what we can offer our clients. Our business development department is always investigating new leads, but we don’t 8 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

do a lot of advertising as the work comes to us.

What particular challenges has COVID 19 presented you? How has it affected the scope of your business?

From the onset of the pandemic we closely monitored government guidance and then the subsequent legislation. As with all businesses we had to rapidly react to this unprecedented and continuously evolving situation. The primary effect on our business initially was transport of personnel to our projects around the country and then managing the impact of accommodation restrictions. At the height of the first wave, when the majority of the country was in lockdown, we had to suspend works on a number of contracts but were able to remain operational on several sites through the use of stringent risk assessed control measures. Aside from some obvious programme implications, all our projects are now fully operational.

What future plans are you making to mitigate the effects of COVID 19?

Looking to the future we are continuously adjusting our control measures to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 affecting our business. We have worked hard to ensure our business is COVID-secure and we will maintain our high standard through the coming weeks and months of this crisis.

What are the biggest technological developments you have seen and what will be future game changers? Throughout the current turbulent times, Brown and Mason has vastly increased the use of technology to maximise social distancing. A prime example being the use of Microsoft Teams to hold meetings with colleagues all over Europe. Video conferencing is also being used to great effect as a communication tool to maintain contact with fellow colleagues, furloughed and not, expanding

social interaction and improving corporate cohesion. Looking to the future, the benefits of this technology are clear. With easier and more fluid communication combined with the economies of reduced travel for face to face meetings, social distancing could be the greatest technological advance for our business.

How do you see the demolition industry developing in 2021 and over the following years?

Key topics that are current and will remain so for many years to come will be: • Tasks are becoming less labour intensive than in the past • The use of robotic machinery in dangerous situations • The design and manufacture of rechargeable demolition conversion heavy duty excavators and cranes that operate without the loss of impact currently experienced on the much smaller equipment currently available • The use of BIM and virtual reality to enable a client to experience the full impact of the demolition process at tender stage, as if they are standing on their site and not just on a desktop • The change in general awareness of recycling/ re-use and the impact that it can have on a project and the environment

Do you have any notable projects in progress or in planning?

As mentioned, our Longannet project is in progress and we are working on a new project in Europe with details to come soon.

It’s a family business. How about future plans and succession?

My brothers and I are proud to have our sons working in the business, in varying in roles from Explosives Technician to Health and Safety apprentice. We have a strong team of professionals in the business. The future is bright for B&M! demolitionhub.com

corporate COMPANY DIRECTOR WASTES NO TIME IN MASTERING THE ART OF DEMOLITION

10 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

Jacqueline O’Donovan, Managing Director of London’s O’Donovan Waste Disposal wasted no time in mastering the art of demolition, becoming one of the first students to earn a University of Wolverhampton master’s degree in demolition management. Already a stalwart of the waste and demolition sector, Jacqueline studied for the two-year master’s degree in the university’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, with her exceptional knowledge and experience making her an ideal candidate. O’Donovan Waste is a multiaward winning, family-run company specialising in construction and demolition waste, providing cradleto-grave options including total waste management, demolition, site-clearance, waste-processing and recycled aggregates, while diverting 100 per cent of its waste from landfill. With Jacqueline at the helm, the business champions a range of initiatives that prioritises staff wellbeing, health and safety, training and environmental excellence. Her commitment to best practice means she is widely regarded as an industry leader. Jacqueline is one of the first cohort of students and one of the first of two women to achieve the world’s first demolition degree, which was developed and launched at the university’s School of Architecture and Built Environment. Accredited by the Institute of Demolition Engineers (IDE), the course has been designed in conjunction with industry specialists. The Master’s of Science degree comprises a range of modules including management, methodologies, research and sustainability, asbestos removal and building information modelling (BIM). Jacqueline said, “I am delighted to be one of the first students to have achieved a demolition master’s degree in the UK. I won’t lie, it was very challenging at times, especially being a

mature student, but I am delighted that I ploughed on. “I am over the moon to have achieved this, and having left school at 16 I did not envisage I would one day return to formal education, let alone work towards a master’s while working full time. “Demolition has always been at the centre of what we do as a company and it is particularly close to my heart as my late father Joe started out in demolition. I was honoured to join the first ever demolition-specific academic qualification offered in the UK. I felt it was imperative to have representation from the waste sector on the course and also to show that demolition is a viable option and can be diverse. “The demolition sector works on more than £8 billion of projects every year in the UK alone, so it is great to see it being recognised with this new professional qualification. “As a waste management company and demolition contractor, we play a vital role in the demolition process and are incredibly proud of the fact we divert 100 per cent of construction waste from landfill. I feel having a master’s degree will give our existing clients further assurance and knowledge that we are experts in our field and their projects are in the hands of an innovative and forward-thinking supply chain partner while helping us to reach new clients and grow our demolition services.” Dr Paul Hampton, Associate Head of the School of Architecture and Built Environment, University of Wolverhampton, said, “Jacqueline should be extremely proud of her achievement in passing this pioneering master’s degree. “We are the only university in the world that offers a programme for the entire lifetime of a building from design right through to demolition and it is thanks to the tireless efforts of our partners that we are able to develop programmes that are both relevant to industry and vital to supporting local, national and international economies. “Our focus in the School of Architecture and Built Environment is to develop courses that are sector relevant and partially delivered in partnership with sector experts. There is a real potential for this to address the sector skills gaps and provide a meaningful step change for recruiting future talent.” demolitionhub.com

ARDEN EQUIPMENT: A SUCCESS STORY SINCE 1956

The success story that is Arden Equipment began more than 60 years ago with its range of hydraulic loading buckets, which have propelled the company to ever greater heights over the years. The French company, which has since expanded worldwide, has gone on to develop a wide range of customised hydraulic attachments. Daniel Dupuy Commercial and Marketing Director said, “Our personnel are driven with passion and we are proud of what we have achieved together over the years. Arden Equipment has built a strong reputation not only in France but worldwide thanks to its quality and long lasting products.” Arden Equipment began its development in the United Kingdom in the 90s and the company has since opened a UK subsidiary to strengthen its position and develop a strong dealer network. Among these is Blue Machinery, which has remained a strong and loyal partner. Today Arden Equipment has grown its network across the country, with the strategic UK hub in Coventry assisting in its distribution. Bill Jenkins, UK Business Development Manager emphasised the importance of the Coventry depot launched this year. “With the uncertainty of Brexit and the on/ off trade deal negotiations, it would be fair to say that 2021 will bring its own challenges. It is vital, therefore, that as a leading manufacturer we make a statement of intent. The investment in the new depot should be seen as part of a long term strategy and commitment to the UK market and our customer base. 14 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

“The product range itself has always had a reputation for reliability through quality and we can now boast innovation among the other brand qualities with award winning products such as the unique Arden Jet Dust suppression systems, which can be used for all industry sectors but particularly the demolition sector. “Now with the opening of the new branch and the local stock holding we only see the Arden brand continuing to strengthen its reputation as a leading attachments manufacturer within the UK market.” The complete portfolio of attachments for the demolition sector is wide ranging and includes demolition shears, both concrete and metal; pulverisers; breakers and selector grabs. Although Arden Equipment successfully exports all its attachments to the UK, the most popular and renowned product

KEY CONSIDERATIONS WHEN INVESTING IN A NEW ATTACHMENT

Demolition Hub interviewed Louis Broekhuizen, Commercial Director at Rotar International BV, about what he sees as the key considerations when investing in a new attachment. With more than 25 years’ experience in the attachment industry, his views certainly carry some weight and make an interesting read for anyone considering such an investment. Louis, can you give us a bit of background on the importance of the attachment decision?

Nowadays there are a wide range of attachments available on the market for a variety of applications. They come in various shapes and sizes and vary considerably in quality and price. Therefore, it is sometimes hard to decide which attachment is the right one for your job. At the end of the day, choosing to invest in the right attachment can have a huge influence on productivity. Of course, the excavators that are already part of your fleet will form a big part of that decision. With excavators, the boom configurations, tool weights and hydraulic capabilities are the most important factors that can influence the performance of the attachment.

What do you believe are the main considerations when choosing which attachment is right for your business?

There are various other considerations you should take into account to justify your investment: • Intensity of usage – core / incidental • Level of application – light / middle / heavy duty • Job dependency on tool conditions – risk delay / penalty • Environmental impact – 18 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

• • •

emissions / fuel consumption Machine classification – the right tool for the right excavator Installation – hydraulic measurements / adjustments tools – carriers Service dependency – tool availability / continuity

Dealer support level – rapid repair / workshop • Parts availability • Instructions – training and documentation Ideally, all of the above should be taken into consideration when purchasing an attachment. demolitionhub.com

Absolutely not. It is also important to consider the cost of the attachment and how this will affect your cashflow. These days, too many people decide on the initial purchase price of the attachments and don’t take into consideration the estimated cost over its lifetime.

So a knowledge of the manufacturer and its reputation is of key importance?

Yes, at Rotar we are manufacturing hydraulic attachments mainly for the demolition, recycling and scrap metal industries. Due to the nature of the work, a dedicated demolition company relies heavily on the quality and condition of its attachments. For this reason, it is important to understand the vision and reputation of the manufacturer.

What should a buyer take into account when looking at the different manufacturers on the market? A number of things. For example, do they use the highest standards of materials and components to justify the investments initially, and to guarantee the tool productivity, availability and lifetime? When you design a tool, you always need to investigate the target machine class first. What range of hydraulic values do you have to work with (pressure/flow capacities). Besides a well performing attachment design incorporating stability, wear resistance and durability due to strong steel construction, you also need to design a hydraulic infrastructure. The performance of the attachment is a combination of the construction, the hydraulic infrastructure on the attachment and the installation and adjustments of the hydraulics on the excavators. At Rotar, it is important to develop both the construction of the attachment and the hydraulic components. Swivels, manifolds, regen-valves and cylinders are all designed in-house. Only in this way demolitionhub.com

can we guarantee an attachment that is designed and fine-tuned for the target machine class. Avoiding backpressure and narrowing in the hydraulics will result in a better performing attachment (cycle times and maximum force). Besides lower temperatures, the fuel consumption and environmental impact (emissions) will be positively affected too. Lower temperatures will extend the lifetime of seals, oil and other hydraulic components.

supplier talk

So it’s not always ideal to go for the cheapest version of the attachment you need?

So what should you consider regarding the maintenance of the attachment?

To ensure maximum productivity over the lifetime of your attachments, it’s important to carry out proper service and repair. Nowadays more and more attachment manufacturers are offering interchangeable wear parts. This will result in a more flexible way of keeping the tool in good condition.

DemolitionHUB Magazine | 19

supplier talk

Also, interchangeable wear parts can decrease the welding activities on the tools, resulting in less downtime and a longer lifetime. Welding and hard facing influences the structure of the steel. Following the correct welding procedures like preheating, using the right welding wires and temperatures as well controlled cool down of the structure can extend the lifetime of your construction. It is important to respect the high-grade materials used as these require special treatments.

If maintenance is a key element, how important is it to buy from the right dealer?

Dealers add value. When you consider any purchase of an attachment, take into account the capabilities of your dealer. A dealer shouldn’t only be there to make the sale. A dealer is your support and backup in case of emergencies. An attachment shouldn’t be delivered to clients without proper installation. Dealers need to measure pressures and flows on the carriers, as the display values in the cabins can’t necessarily be relied upon to be absolutely correct. Every new attachment should start with a proper installation. Additionally, operators need to be trained correctly. Operators need to take notice of the written instructions in the operation manuals. A dealer also has to respond in case of an emergency or breakdown. The technicians’ product knowledge, component availability and response time are extremely important for you as a client, when your excavator, driver and tool are experiencing downtime. Remember, that the impact is often greater than the tool and 20 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

excavator being unable to operate. The jobsite isn’t running properly, trucks need to be cancelled, activities have to be rescheduled and this can easily result in delays on the jobsite. For all these reasons, it’s very important to understand what you are going to buy and from whom. An attachment is operating in the most intensive environment. The materials are aggressive, the forces are to the max, and external impacts can be unexpectedly high. Therefore, it’s extremely important to understand how dependent you are on the quality and serviceability of the attachments and the support you receive.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Is there anything you’d like to add?

The above should give you a core understanding of the considerations to take into account when buying any attachment. Here at Rotar we believe that buying a dedicated tool from a dealer with a good reputation, industry knowledge and great service will justify the investment

in a premium attachment. Over the lifetime of the product, your costs can be controlled by regular services, using original parts and running the attachments on the right settings. This will create fuel savings, reduce downtime and maintain a good relationship with your supporting dealer. Working this way, we are convinced that premium attachments will be cheaper than lower quality equivalents over their lifetime. The initial purchase price is only a starting point when considering the lifetime investment. To work day-in, day-out with a premium, well performing tool will result in greater productivity, driver satisfaction, better revenues and fewer unexpected costs. Lower lifetime costs justify the purchase of premium attachments. At the end of the day, it is the performance of the attachment that has a bigger influence on its productivity on the jobsite rather than the excavator, which is only carrying the tool.

SPECIAL OFFER: FREE STEEL WHEELS WITH airBOSS TYRE

22 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

What is the airBOSS tyre? The airBOSS tyre is an innovative British made tyre perfect for the demolition sector – robust, money-saving and downtime eliminating. The tyre is made of interlocking rubber segments bolted onto a steel rim. Never again do you need to replace a complete tyre – only the damaged segments, at a fraction of the cost. The unique airBOSS segmented tyre was first introduced into the UK at the SED Show in 1991 when it won three awards, the Silver Medal, the Supreme Gold for Innovation and the Newcomer Award. This was the first time that any one

company had won all three awards. All the major OEMs such as JCB, CAT, Doosan Bobcat, Case, Komatsu, New Holland airBOSS approve of the airBOSS tyre. There is minimal downtime when using an airBOSS wheel. The vehicle operator can change a damaged segment in minutes using a spanner without jacking up the vehicle and so avoiding any loss of production time. With a standard tyre, the machine cannot be used until a new tyre has been brought to the site. On-site trials have proven the many financial benefits in never having to purchase a tyre, in not having to pay callout charges or suffering the cost of downtime. The airBOSS steel rim is unique in that it is specially engineered to enable the tyre segments to dovetail to create a complete wheel. The rim is a one-off purchase and will last the lifetime of the machine, unlike other tyres in the market where the rim either needs to be replaced when a tyre is damaged or the rim is incorporated within the tyre itself. An airBOSS wheel is, in most cases, more expensive than the standard pneumatic and semisolid tyres due to the need for the specially engineered steel rim. airBOSS understands that the initial cost of the steel rims may deter an operator from making the switch, so as a special deal until 31 October 2020, purchasers will only pay for the segments when purchasing a set of wheels. airBOSS will supply the steel rims free of charge saving a total of ÂŁ1,100 per vehicle. While airBOSS will retain ownership of all steel rims supplied, these may be used at no cost by the customer for up to three years. If the customer no longer wishes to use the airBOSS wheel system, the rims will be returned to airBOSS. Alternatively, the customer may purchase the rims for the retail price, currently ÂŁ275 per wheel, at any time.

WARD LAUNCHES ASBESTOS DROP OFF SERVICE

Derbyshire based metal and waste recycling specialist, Ward, has launched a new asbestos drop off service for smaller loads or oneoff jobs. Asbestos is dangerous to human health and must be disposed of safely by a licensed contractor. It is not widely accepted at household waste recycling centres and so can often be difficult to dispose of. The new service for the safe disposal of cement-bonded asbestos launched this month. It is aimed at residential and commercial customers who need a quick and reliable way to safely dispose of the hazardous material.

24 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

Donald Ward, Operations Director at Ward said, “There are often cases where tradespeople or householders working on smaller projects in renovations of older properties or home DIY-ers dismantling a garage or lean-to unexpectedly find themselves with asbestos for disposal. Due to the minimum quantity limits at many disposal sites, they struggle to find somewhere to safely dispose of it at a competitive rate. “Our Chesterfield and Ilkeston facilities are fully licensed for handling hazardous waste and can accept small loads less than 150kgs at a new special rate or larger

loads of asbestos up to a number of tonnes at the most comparative rates in the area. “We’ve launched the new service so that people can easily book in and drop off cementbased asbestos and be sure that it will be disposed of in a safe and responsible way.” The new service enables customers to book in and drop off up to four bags or 150kgs of cement-bonded asbestos at Ward sites for an exclusive rate of £95+VAT, including all legal paperwork such as a consignment note. The team also offers free advice and support for all enquiries.

WHY YOU SHOULD BE MONITORING NO2 EMISSIONS

Construction sites and NO2 It is well known that construction sites can generate and emit many different forms of pollution, the most obvious being material waste, visible dust, noise and vibration. However, construction and demolition sites also produce less obvious pollutants that are cause of serious concern for human health and impact on the environment. Two of these pollutants are nitrogen dioxide gas (NO2) and particulate matter (fine dust particles or PM). It is estimated that in London, NRMM (Non-Road Mobile Machinery) contributes to seven per cent of NOx, 14 per cent of PM2.5 and eight per cent of PM10 and it is believed to be a similar proportion in other major conurbations. NRMM on construction sites generates NO2 from diesel or petrol fuelled engines in trucks, excavators, loaders, bulldozers, mobile cranes, off-road machinery and static engines such as pumps and electricity generators. Idling engines are a significant contributor to NRMM emissions and personal exposure to PM2.5, PM10 and NO2. It is estimated that 15 per cent of diesel fuel consumed per year in the UK is associated with NRMM,

30 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

which equates to approximately four billion litres.

How is NO2 generated?

Combustion of fossil fuels produces oxides of nitrogen (NO2). NOx is primarily made up of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). NO2 is of most concern due to its impact on health. However NO easily converts to NO2 in the air – so to reduce concentration of NO2 it is essential to control emissions of NOx. National ambient air quality standards set NO2 as a criteria pollutant and indicator of the larger group of nitrogen oxides.

Health effect of NO2

Scientific evidence links short term NO2 exposure with adverse respiratory effects including airway inflammation in healthy people and increased respiratory symptoms in people with asthma. Studies also show a connection between short term exposure and increased hospital admissions for respiratory illnesses. In addition to contributing to ground-level ozone effects on the respiratory system, NOx reacts with ammonia, moisture and other compounds to form small particles. These small particles can penetrate deeply into sensitive parts of the lungs.

Recent research shows children exposed to diesel-dominated air pollution in London are showing poor lung capacity, putting them at risk of lifelong breathing disorders. The study was led by Kings College London, Queen Mary University of London and the University of Edinburgh.

What is new in NO2 measurement?

For accurate measurement of dust and particulates, Aeroqual provides real-time dust sentry monitors, which are widely used across the UK on construction sites. These monitors now come with the option of being upgraded to accurately measure NO2 in parallel with dust and particulates. The systems have advanced patented sensors and an active pumped air flow to sample NO2 to near reference standards giving a reliable picture of key pollutants on site. Data is stored and uploaded to the cloud during each minute of alerting and reporting. In the past, diffusion tubes have been used to measure NO2 concentrations in communities. These are passive devices that measure the average concentration typically over one month. NO2 concentrations are usually required as an hourly period and for construction projects during working hours. These limitations make new real time NO2 monitoring an attractive proposition. Newer dust sentry and profiler monitors can now be upgraded and brand new propose built AQS can be purchased or hired today.

RECENT PROJECTS

Ferrybridge power station – Demolition monitoring

Campbell Associates has been assisting civil engineer giants Keltbray with its environmental monitoring on the demolition and clearing of the power stations at Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire. The coal fired towers were situated on the River Aire in West Yorkshire, next to the junction of the M62 and A1(M) motorways. They have been a landmark for travellers of those roads for more than 50 years. But these towers have been decommissioned and need to be brought to the ground after the power station’s closure in 2016. The site is set to be cleared by 2021. Keltbray’s challenge on the project was to effectively monitor noise, vibration and dust emissions generated by its activity. The

company needed to be able to remotely access the data gathered from across the project and easily download the reports. Keltbray chose the Sonitus noise, AVA vibration and Aeroqual Dust Monitor, which, with a total of 15 monitors across the site, proved to be uncomplicated and costeffective. During the cooling tower blowdown in June and October 2019, additional dust monitors were required to measure the after effects. With the level of interest the project was drawing, large crowds of onlookers were expected during the cooling towers’ blowdown, meaning

public safety was paramount. The monitors still provide Keltbray with reliable, accurate measurement data stored in real time, which the company can use to keep a clear picture of what is happening on site. With the additional feature of trigger alerts when pre-set levels are exceeded; they are confident in their monitoring.

devices in one enclosure, which can be easily installed at the edge of a site and, once powered, require minimal further interaction. Data capture continues seamlessly, and reporting can be entirely customised to suit the needs of the end user. Operators can use the Guardian2 to get exactly the data they need, whenever they need it. Reports can be set up for single monitoring streams (e.g. noise or dust only) or including all monitoring results. Automated reports can be sent daily, weekly, or monthly, directly to an email inbox in graphical or tablature formats. Users aren’t limited to routine passive monitoring results; text or email alerts can be configured for any measured parameter, or for device errors such as power loss, allowing operators to react quickly to exceeded hazard levels or out of action equipment. Access levels are also fully customisable, allowing users to specify who receives and can configure reports and to connect to different Guardian2 units on multiple sites remotely using Casella’s secure online access point. Tim Turney, Casella Global Marketing Manager said, “Having flexible access to consistent, accurate monitoring data is vital to ensuring project safety, for employer, employee and site neighbours alike.

fleet Howard Civil Engineering, founded in 2003 by Michael Howard, is one of the leading civil engineering companies in the north and specialises in four key disciplines: RC Frames, S278 works, roads and sewers and groundworks. The family run business prides itself for working alongside a number of prestigious clients such as BAM, Wates, Willmott Dixon and GMI Construction. To support its civil engineering projects, the company also operates its own plant hire business consisting of 60 excavators ranging from two to 38 tonnes. A number of these machines have worked on high profile projects and developments including Victoria Gate Shopping Centre in Leeds, Hard Ings Road in Bradford, Rudding Park Hotel and Leeds City College’s Quarry Hill Campus. Earlier this year the company won multiple contracts across Yorkshire, prompting it to expand its fleet. This led to it purchasing a number of Komatsu PC80MR-5 midi and PC55MR-5 mini excavators in July. The main factor for choosing Komatsu was previous experience with the company and finding its machines to be the most reliable

40 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

GOING FOR GROWTH Howard Civil Engineering expands fleet with Komatsu and efficient on the market. The inclusion of Komatsu Care which covers the first three years / 2000 hours of servicing was also seen as a massive plus point, as this freed up Howard Civil Engineering’s own engineers for other work. Finally, the strong residual values of the machines were also an influencer in the decision. The new machines are part of Komatsu’s MR-5 generation of mini and midi excavators. The range concentrates the quality and performance of the larger Komatsu construction range into a compact package. Each machine is packed full of high level specifications as standard, including a Stage V emissions compliant engine, auto idle shutdown, neutral position detection system and Komtrax

monitoring system. They also have a tight tail swing radius and a swing boom that hugs the machine making them the perfect tool for confined job sites. So far, the feedback from Howard Civil Engineering’s operators has been exclusively positive in relation to cab comfort, responsiveness, power and performance. The company is looking forward to using the new machines on its Greengate Junction Improvement Scheme, where it is the main contractor for Bradford Council. It is a very high-profile site where it will be widening all four approaches to the existing junction and installing underground attenuation to accommodate surface and rainwater from the increased paved footprint.

IMPROVING RECYCLING AND REDUCING WASTE IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

As awareness of the climate emergency intensifies, tackling the impact of waste on our environment becomes a critical issue. Here, Matthew Bastable, of BPH Attachments, discusses the importance of improving reuse and recycling rates in construction The construction industry is under increasing pressure to reduce waste. According to a report by The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), the sector uses 400 million tonnes of material every year, resulting in 100 million tonnes of waste. This accounts for a staggering third of the UK’s total yearly waste, with a massive 25 million tonnes of construction waste ending up in landfill. Generating site waste is often unavoidable but construction companies still have a legal obligation to ensure it is properly managed and that waste is reused or recycled wherever possible through a Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP). Sending waste to landfill should only be a last resort. However, 13 per cent of products delivered to construction sites are sent directly to landfill without having been used. This has not only huge implications for the environment, but a significant effect on a company’s bottom line. By using materials in a better way and reducing, reusing and sorting waste for recycling, construction companies could save thousands of pounds per project and minimise the impact they have on the environment. Managing waste on construction 46 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

sites can be a complicated and time consuming business. But, through careful planning, it is possible to eliminate waste and identify materials that can be reused and recycled. Having a clear understanding of the project and choosing materials wisely from the outset will help to encourage more effective waste disposal planning. Common types of construction waste include: • Concrete, bricks, tiles, cement and ceramics • Wood, glass and plastic • Insulation materials, including asbestos • Bituminous mixtures, coal tar and other tar • Metallic waste such as pipes • Soil, stones and dredging • Paints and varnishes • Sealants and adhesives

Sorting waste for reuse and recycling

While understanding which materials can be reused and recycled successfully is pivotal to reducing waste going to landfill, this also relies on the processes adopted to recover it and prevent it from ending up in landfill unintentionally. Materials should always be

screened before being sent to landfill. Specialist machinery, such as BPH Attachments’ PRODEM Rotary Screening Bucket, is designed to sort site material quickly and easily for reuse. Materials, including aggregates, organic waste and covering pipes, can all be sorted with an attachment that fits to machinery already on site, such as excavators and wheel loaders, helping to save time and money and improve a project’s waste ratio. Construction companies are finding these attachments are offering numerous benefits for projects. For example, bricks, blocks and concrete can be easily sorted and reused on other projects for creating new roads and pathways. This saves money, improves overall environmental performance and ensures legal obligations are met. The estimated cost of waste to a construction project is approximately ten times that of a single skip hire. Additionally, landfill tax, disposal charges and the cost of materials are all set to substantially rise in the coming years. Waste will continue to be a problem for the construction industry so finding innovative methods for managing it successfully is not only essential for business efficiency, but an ethical responsibility for future generations. demolitionhub.com

THE MONEY PIT: SOLVING THE POTHOLE PROBLEM

Potholes have been an endless source of frustration for road users across the UK with insurance companies paying out millions each year in car repair claims. Matthew Bastable, from BPH Attachments, examines how our highways have become failing infrastructure in need of urgent repair Each year, around 38.4 million vehicles travel on Great Britain’s 246,700-mile road network, making them crucial for connecting communities, the movement of goods and maintaining the economy. According to the Department for Transport, 66 per cent of vehicle miles travelled in 2019 were on motorways and A roads, with the remainder travelled on minor roads. Although local authorities are attempting to repair roads as quickly as possible, potholes have continued to plague the country’s road network, damaging vehicles and posing a danger to road users, sometimes fatally. Vulnerable road users are especially at risk. Figures from the Department for Transport show that more than 250 cyclists have been killed or seriously injured due to poorly maintained roads in the last five years. Most recently, a woman from Lancashire was killed during a 50-mile bike ride after hitting a 2.5-inch-deep pothole and losing control. Another woman from Merseyside was also involved in a fatal crash after a pothole caused her to veer into the path of an oncoming car. Potholes in the UK have been 48 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

increasing at an alarming rate over the past few years. According to the AIA (Asphalt Industry Alliance), 11 per cent of England’s roads (excluding London) are in poor condition, with a further 25 per cent showing some deterioration. It estimates that more than 22,000 miles of road are likely to require maintenance in 2020, at a cost of £9.8 billion to local authorities over the next 10 years. However, on average, each local authority faces a £4.1 million shortfall in annual carriageway maintenance budgets – a figure that has increased year on year and is only likely to get worse as budgets are cut. Concerns about adequate funding have persisted for years, however, according to AIA’s data, the cost of filling potholes has fallen from over £70 to nearly £50 in the last 10 years. But what this doesn’t reflect is the quality of the repairs undertaken or the longevity of the surface dressing. A pothole resolution? It’s clear there is no quick fix to the pothole problem. Limitations on local authorities have meant that pothole repairs have become a reactive issue rather than a problem that is solved proactively. The less frequently a road surface is fully

replaced, the more likely it is to have problems with degradation, including the formation of potholes – creating an endless cycle of pothole, repair and repeat. Unrepaired potholes have a huge impact on the taxpayer. In the last year, local authorities have paid out £22.5 million in compensation claims due to road surface defects. Using taxpayer money to upgrade the road networks would be a far better use of funds than paying compensation claims. Issues with potholes don’t just include the associated costs with carrying out the work, but also the time taken to complete the repairs. Roadworks can cause a huge headache for those using the road networks, often creating long tailbacks and adding time onto journeys. The average driver will spend over a day a year sitting in traffic at a cost of more than £1,100 in wasted fuel and time. There are hopes that innovations made in recent years will address this problem. While traditionally many contractors have used road planers or “top cutters” to strip the tarmac so that an excavator can then dig a trench for the replacement section, plant machinery attachments are proving to be invaluable for both time and cost savings. For example, the PRODEM Patch Planer, which can be demolitionhub.com

JCB has introduced an electric version of the popular HTD-5 Dumpster tracked carrier, adding to its growing range of innovative fully electric E-Tech models. The HTD-5e E-Dumpster is offered as a high-tip, walk-behind model, capable of carrying up to 500kg. The addition of electric drive makes the machine suitable for urban and indoor applications that require low noise and zero exhaust emissions. Key features include: mounted directly onto an excavator or skid-steer already on site, removes the necessity for separate, large road planing equipment and cuts 120mm deep in two passes. Such equipment has proved to reduce both the time taken and the costs involved to undertake repairs. Meanwhile, some councils are opting for trialling new materials. These include self-repairing asphalt, recycled plastic fillers and automated paving technology to help improve surfacing quality. Automated paving technology will collect data that can be combined with manufacturing information to create an accurate record of the condition and material composition of a road. The future for pothole maintenance is hazy. There is no consensus across local authorities or government as to how to solve the issue in the long term. However, what is apparent is the consequences of allowing our highways to deteriorate without planned and preventative maintenance or regular road resurfacing. As roads worsen, not only do the costs and time of resolving problems increase, but injuries and fatalities will continue to occur – and nobody should have to pay for a pothole with their life. demolitionhub.com

USHANT ISLAND

MB Crusher cuts the bill for importing raw materials and solves the landfill issue

50 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

Ushant Island is six square miles of rocky island located at the southwestern end of the English Channel, marking the north-western most point of Brittany, in France. The connection to the mainland is by plane or boat and this is how all materials for general construction and roadworks must be imported. Or it was until Jean-Jacques Perhirin from Kéranchas bought two MB Crusher units – the BF70.2 crushing bucket and MB-S14 screening bucket – and began recycling debris. With the price of importing materials rising, this public works company found a solution while preserving the environment and fully enjoying heritage sites as the marvellous lighthouse, the Phare de Créac’h. Built in 1863, the 53-metrehigh lighthouse is known among pharologists (those who study lighthouses) as the most powerful lighthouse in Europe. A short distance from it, there is an MB Crusher BF70.2 mounted on a Hitachi 170W reducing brick and concrete. By recovering demolition material, the company is not only saving on procurement money, but it is also addressing a very important issue; that old quarries are now saturated and waste storage is tight. Bricks, concrete and asphalt should not be treated as waste because with the right tools, they can be revalued on site and transformed into quality, reusable materials. With MB’s mobile crusher and screener, Jean-Jacques Perhirin’s company has the opportunity to save natural resources while avoiding the costs of importing aggregates by sea. The compact MB attachments also make it possible to work in restricted spaces. They are now able to make their own aggregates by sifting rubble to separate the smaller particles and reducing the bigger pieces with the jaw crusher. Et voilà – hardcore, for paving, foundation and fillings. Two attachments working to make ready-to-use high quality product; two problems solved; one piece of heavy equipment and one operator. From waste to reusable material is a few simple and cost-effective steps and the entire process is done on-site. demolitionhub.com

MB COMMISSION MB Crusher screener and crusher treat demolition material at the site of new European Commission building

Located in the Kirchberg district of Luxembourg City where several European institutions are located, the Jean Monnet 2 building will bear the name of one of the founders of the European Community. It will allow the European Union to rationalise its services on the new 190,000 m² site, include a seven-storey central building and a 23-storey tower capable of accommodating more than 3,600 officers. Developed from a joint project between JSWD Architects (Cologne), Chaix and Morel et Associés (Paris) and Bertrand Schmit (Luxembourg), the Jean Monnet 2 will replace an office building built in 1975. The new building will be built on foundations

resulting from the original’s earthworks. After a first phase of sorting and recycling materials following the deconstruction of the building, the inert waste was recycled on site using MB Crusher tools. Since the start of the work in September 2019, 9,000 tonnes of inert waste have been treated with the BF120.4 crusher bucket, at a rate of 500 tonnes per day. The aim to build with a low energy impact without disrupting the traffic around the site was achieved by implementing energyefficient techniques and limiting the number of trucks travelling in and out of the construction sites. The model BF120.4 crusher

bucket and the MB-S18 screening bucket mounted on KOLBELCO excavators have made it possible to screen and crush in situ, considerably reducing the impact on the environment by eliminating truck rotations and optimising the richness of the soil revalued. These two tools work in a complementary manner since the screening bucket reduces crushing time by separating the materials to be recycled from the soil, a recycling station using excavators already on site. After a first phase of testing to control the quality of the materials crushed with the BF120.4 crusher bucket, the design office in charge of this project validated the conformity

of the upgraded materials on site. The crusher bucket has therefore made it possible to recycle the waste resulting from deconstruction on site in compliance with the highest quality standards required for the recycling of debris. Thanks to its small dimensions, the BF120.4 crusher bucket can be transported easily and is agile even in small, narrow spaces and city centres, where regulations can limit traffic weight. With a production of 500 tonnes a day, the BF120.4 crusher bucket made it possible to revalue materials resulting from the demolition directly on site by avoiding the rotation of trucks, unloading and redeeming rubble. The project, which began in September 2019, will be completed in 2024. MB is trusted on such large projects as this because its products allow significant environmental and financial savings by avoiding landfill and the purchase of materials. EFFICIENCY GAIN Harte Demolition increases productivity with Epiroc attachments supplied by WAC McCandless

From site clearance and hazardous waste removal to complete strip outs and building demolition, Omagh based Harte Demolition Ltd has successfully planned and completed demolition projects across Northern Ireland for more than 20 years. Having first used an SB 102 hydraulic breaker on its Brokk demolition robot, the company was so impressed with the power of the breaker that it purchased an SB 152 from WAC McCandless (Engineers) Ltd, the local Epiroc dealer. Now it has gone on to invest further in Epiroc heavy breakers and selector grabs. Harte Demolition owner Connor Harte said, “We have used a range of breakers from different manufacturers over the years, but Epiroc’s small and heavy breakers have stood out for both their speed and reliability compared to the others we have in the yard. “I was extremely impressed 56 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

by the professionalism and level of service provided by the team at WAC,” continued Mr Harte. “From selecting and ordering the breaker and grab, through to having them commissioned on site, the whole process has been simple and easy.” Operator Paul McCarney has been using an Epiroc HB 2000 on Harte’s recent demolition of an old factory in Belfast. Paul said, “We’ve been using the breaker to remove reinforced concrete flooring and shuttered walls, as well as a tank. Epiroc’s Intelligent Protection System (IPS), which is standard on the HB 2000, has proved particularly effective and makes my job a lot easier. I’ve been really impressed with the operating speed of both the HB 2000 and the MG 1500 multi grapple.” The HB 2000 delivered to Harte included Epiroc’s patented Intelligent Protection System (IPS), which simplifies the breaking

process by automatically adapting the breaker’s operating behaviour to any working condition. Uptime is higher since, with its fully automated functionality, IPS requires no operator intervention or reaction and the working process is not interrupted. The system permits more accurate and significantly faster positioning of the breaker thanks to the centring effect and avoids blank firing that often results in tool damage. This also eliminates mechanical strain on the carrier and the life of all wear components is extended. The physical load on the operator is minimised as well. Donal Cunningham, Regional Sales Manager for Epiroc said, “Our comprehensive and robust product range, combined with WAC’s commitment to holding the full range of spare parts and its fully trained workshop and field engineers gives the perfect package for Harte Demolition.” demolitionhub.com

BUILT FOR DESTRUCTION Liebherr has unveiled the model that completes its latest trio of specialist demolition excavators

“Real-time information on tilt angle and tool position is relayed to the cab”

58 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

The R 940 Demolition succeeds the R 944 C and arrives to line up alongside the R 950 and R 960 models. Built at the LiebherrFrance SAS facility in Colmar, the three machines set new standards in efficiency and profitability with a package of model and equipment combinations to match any application. Liebherr’s award-winning Demolition Control System (DCS) keeps the operator aware of the position of the demolition tool at all times, minimising the threat of an error that might affect stability. Real-time information on tilt angle and tool position is relayed to the cab and if a critical value is exceeded, the Liebherr Demolition Control (LDC) kicks in to inform the driver of every movement of the equipment. Like its stablemates, the R 940 Demolition features a 30° tiltable cab to give the best view of the working area while the hydraulically adjustable undercarriage with variable track gauge and a removable counterweight make for easier road transport. A cab air filtration system and a spray system for reducing dust in the work area are available as options and an air compressor for cleaning radiator and cab can also be fitted. The Stage V Liebherr engine can output 200 kW and comes with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), SCR system, particulate filter and, with no EGR valve, fuel consumption is lower and productivity higher. demolitionhub.com

plant for an external rain cap and no scavenger system is needed to meet the filter life. JCB also now fits a wide core radiator as standard and has options for a reversing fan and pleated flyscreen, with no detriment to the 55°C ambient cooling performance. The bold new counterweight on the X Series is shaped to protect the asset, with dedicated strike points on the corners and the logo recessed to protect company branding. The counterweight also comes as red and white chevrons as standard on the XD model. For ultimate attachment handling, JCB offers the option of Advanced Tool Select. On the display 10 attachments can be set up with desired flow and relief pressure, with customisable control curves for the proportional sliders allowing operators to fine tune the response. ATS monitors pressure changes and makes alterations to the system to maintain a constant and consistent flow to the attachment.

Operator environment

There has been a total focus on the operator environment and the cab is a completely new structure, which will be used across the X series range. It is 100mm longer and a full metre wide, making it 15 per cent larger overall than on previous machines. The cab incorporates the ROPS frame within the structure and has flat glazing all round. Most impressively, the 220X boasts an incredibly low 67dB(A) noise level inside the operator’s cab, down from 73dB(A) on the previous generation. The wiper motor is mounted to the bottom left-hand side of the front windscreen to maximise visibility. Three all-new seat options developed with supplier Grammer provide maximum comfort, with heating and ventilation among the options. The servo levers are mounted from the seat frames and so move with the operator, while the cab now sits on four new cab mounts, for improved isolation. The flat floor is easy to keep

64 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

clean and even the rubber mat has been redesigned to assist with sweeping out. JCB has also provided an additional hour meter, that can be seen from ground level outside the cab. This attention to detail continues inside, as all of the controls have been ergonomically designed to be 100 per cent operator focused. To the right-hand side of the operator is an all-new command pod, bringing together all switches and controls into a single seat-mounted unit. A seven-inch tilt-adjustable monitor has been provided with intuitive menus and functionality. The monitor is accessed through an automotive-style rotary controller. By combining the benefits of the screen and the command pod, which has a button for every regularly used function, tests have shown that an operator can carry out regular operations faster. The foot pedals, foot rests and tracking levers have also been redesigned to provide increased comfort, while the machines can be supplied factory-prepared for GPS excavation guidance, tilt-rotator and autolube if required.

Durable design

The new 20-tonne class excavators herald a robust, purposeful new appearance, that will be carried throughout the range. Designed and built to work efficiently and with durability and reliability embedded in their DNA, the excavators have an upperstructure that is a full 2.7 metres wide, 200mm broader than their predecessors. The additional space has allowed JCB’s designers to mount the main boom in the centre of the machine, rather than at an offset. This reduces stress on the slew bearing and provides increased accuracy for the operator when trenching. It also permits the use of larger buckets without impacting the tracks. To the right of the machine the handrail has been mounted inboard of the structure to prevent damage. However, if handrails are caught, they are now bolted in place, so can easily be replaced. The service

doors are pressed double-skin steel, with sturdy handles and a welded framework for added rigidity. A pronounced skirt circles the upperstructure, providing a strong, yet easily repairable profile to protect the new doors. All tanks are now mounted inside the bodywork, to further reduce the risk of damage and even the counterweight has been designed to prevent knocks. There is easy access to a large toolbox, with integral refuelling pump with filter, while the AdBlue tank is positioned under a separate cover to prevent cross-contamination and to make it easier to refill. On the left-hand side of the body there is an air inlet in just one access door, cutting external noise levels. A large cooling pack with standard wide-core radiators as standard, comes with a removable flyscreen that is easy to keep clean. There is a storage area above the batteries and the machines benefit from a new consolidated IP69 fuse board, located within the service door behind the cab. There is also ground-level access to the heating and ventilation system filter behind the cab door and the machines can be supplied with optional LED lights inside the service compartments.

Increased efficiency

While much of the last decade has put engine development at the centre of the engineers’ briefs for all manufacturers, the stability of Tier 4 Final and Stage IV legislation has allowed the team to expand its remit for the new models. The company has stayed with proven Kawasaki hydraulic pumps and Kayaba valves, but has opted for larger spools and a latest generation valve block for reduced hydraulic losses. The diameter of the main hydraulic hose to and from the main hydraulic valve has increased in diameter from 19 to 25mm, giving greater flow without increasing the speed of the oil. Maintaining the speed of the oil in increased diameter hoses, results in less wear and tear and therefore increases hose life. Though the boom and arm are demolitionhub.com

plant unchanged, JCB will offer the option of boom float with two modes to make grading easier and to reduce stress when operating a hydraulic breaker. The bucket ram will be available with an optional hose burst check valve and the grease points in the boom and arm have been grouped together to reduce service time.

Research and development

JCB has undertaken the design and engineering of the new 20-tonne machines with quality and durability at the heart of every operation. The company benchmarked all leading competitors and collected more than 1,000 requirements from customers around the world. The team spent four years honing the excavators to make them both easy to operate and simple to service. Of course, JCB designed the excavators using computer aided engineering (CAE). However, the team also used CAE to virtually build the excavators. Before any parts were ordered from suppliers, the production line knew exactly how to assemble the components, thanks in part to contributions from the staff on the assembly line. A vast amount of endurance testing has been carried out, with every door opened and slammed shut more than 10,000 times to assess durability. Electronic test rigs have been used to test every electrical component and for the first time, JCB has put the entire 20-tonne excavator on an automotive-style shaker rig. Customers will notice higher quality paint finishes, as the designers have eliminated any sharp edges in the steelwork. The hot test that all machines undergo at the end of the assembly line has also been increased to fully test the machines. Even the way that the excavators are built has been changed, with 42 per cent of the machine now constructed as subassemblies off the main line, double the previous amount. This allows for additional quality inspections and reliability checks, while simplifying the main line. demolitionhub.com

plant to be available – until now. I’ve spent the last 20 years looking for the ideal machine and as soon as Holt JCB sent me the specifications for the X Series I knew we were in business. It has the perfect combination of size, weight, power, stability and ripping force. “Other manufacturers only offer adapted units to bring them up to the requirements for demolition, but those alterations can run into thousands of pounds. Even then, you essentially have a ground works machine trying to perform a tougher role. The JCB machine was purchased solely for demolition, which is 99 per cent of our workload, and it is proving the dream machine for the job. “We have already put 200 hours on the clock and it’s been perfect since day one. Fuel consumption is even lower than expected and it uses less AdBlue than our pickup truck. It’s pulling lumps out of the ground that no comparable

machines could manage and it’s using less fuel doing it. “We choose to use Holt JCB because of the close proximity to our working base. JCB has always had a strong presence in the Poole area dating back as far as I can remember some 35 years ago. With demolition being a demanding role, you need the reassurance of knowing you can get parts quickly. No other manufacturers have dealers offering parts anywhere near us.” Craig Hanford, Brian’s son and operator of the 220X said, “This is a totally different animal. The stability of the 220X is exceptional, not just when excavating concrete, but when heavy demolition attachments are fitted too. “It’s so well balanced when you’re ripping into concrete, it sits solidly and doesn’t throw you around the cab. The extra weight JCB has added has helped enormously. The cab is quieter and the seat is more comfortable than other

machines and you feel fresher after an eight-hour shift in the cockpit. Last week we were working between two houses with just a metre gap between them. Even the resident commented how surprisingly quiet such a large machine was.” Poole-based Advanced Demolition is a family-run business offering a series of demolition services across Dorset and the neighbouring counties. These include land and site clearance, asbestos reports, asbestos removal, factory stripping, soft stripping, metal cutting, concrete crushing and breaking tasks. The new X Series model joins existing 803 and 8080 compact excavators and a JS145LC tracked model in the Advanced Demolition fleet where they use shear, pulveriser, hammer and rotational selector grab attachments to carry out internal works and small house demolition projects. The new 220X model handles the company’s larger residential and commercial projects.

MB SCREENING BUCKET MB-S MEETS THE NEWEST MEMBER OF MB CRUSHER FLEET, THE MB-HDS So much has happened since the launch of the HDS padding bucket series on that April day at Bauma 2019. The performers on the stage, the loud music, the lights are now all a fading memory. The buckets have been in the field for over a year now. Dues have been paid and everyone is ready to talk about the whispers going around. In a double “interview”, newcomer to the padding bucket line, HDS, is accompanied by the rotary screening bucket MB-S in talking about their part in the MB Crusher team, their strengths and differences. 70 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

MB-HDS, ARE YOU HERE TO REPLACE THE MB-S?

MB-HDS320: Absolutely not. We are complementary but ultimately different tools. It seems complicated but in reality, it is very easy so let me try to explain. On one job in USA the task was simple – separating sand from the rocks on a trenching project. I was the right tool for the job because I could get the fine material directly into the trench thanks to my shape and the material coming out at the bottom. The MB-S14 was chosen to clean a beach in Spain because it was the best choice for that particular job.

MB-S14: Yes, they needed to separate trash from sand on this jobsite in Valencia for the upcoming summer season. The most important quality was sizing. Once the appropriate sized grid is chosen, anything bigger will not pass through the holes, keeping larger material inside the basket.

SO YOU SEPARATED THE SAND IN DIFFERENT WAYS. WHAT ELSE? MB-HDS: We were both on a site in Hungary working on topsoil. The goal was to have clean and fine material.

ease. The difference lies in the desired result. As a trommel screener, I work well to grade materials and separate the fine from the course. In other words, create a ready to use product. An example would be when I was used in the Czech Republic to build a railway. The main requirement on this job was the output size of the material. HDS: While I processed demolition waste material, when they needed a high production rate and volume to screen the material.

The first job was at the Bozsik football stadium; the soil needed to be processed as a base for the new pitch. The second job was a trench excavation between a pre-existing prison and a new building complex. In theory both attachments could be used in both scenarios. What made them choose one of us over the other? The consistency of the topsoil was the deal breaker. MB-S: I worked on the football pitch with a 10x10 mm screen. The excavated soil was nice and dry but contained a lot of rocks, so it

needed to be sieved and laid out uniformly to hold the following grass layer. The trench material was wet and full of clumps of dirt – this was an ideal job for the MB-HDS Shafts Screener as its star discs are able to work and break up the material even if damp and compact.

SO AS I UNDERSTAND IT, THE CRITICAL FACTOR IS THE JOB TYPE AND THE DESIRED OUTCOME?

MB-S: Yes, exactly. Let’s take rocks and stone chippings for example. Both units can process them with

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT ONE ATTACHMENT CAN DO THAT THE OTHER CAN’T?

HDS: Yes, there are jobs and materials that are better suited to one unit rather than the other. Compost is a good example. I can easily aerate and break up this material thanks to the shafts in my bucket. A MB-HDS320 was used in France to aerate compost, while a German company chose a smaller unit an MB-LS314. The same goes for twigs and scrubs, which are broken up by the discs on my shafts ready to be reused. MB-S: It’s true, with my trommel screen I wouldn’t be able to process compost. It would be impossible, the material would clump up and it wouldn’t have the desired effect. If the material is particularly abrasive, however, I’m the perfect choice. The same goes for iron and steel scraps. With this type of material, there would be a high wear on the HDS shafts, which doesn’t affect me. My basket panels allow me to separate and sieve fine material to the selected size with ease. For example, when working with scrap metal, fine soil, dust and flakes fall through my holes while the larger pieces of metal stay in the basket. So not enemies. Just two attachments that complement each other depending on the job at hand and required end product. Having both on the jobsite wouldn’t be a bad idea. Just saying.

BPH ATTACHMENTS IS AWARDED FORS SILVER ACCREDITATION

74 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

Hire, sales and repair business BPH Attachments has been awarded FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) silver accreditation for driver and vehicle safety. The business has 18 vehicles in its fleet, delivering hydraulic attachments including PRODEM’s hammers, pulverisers, selector grabs, crushers, shears, screening buckets and planers to customers and construction sites all over the UK. The FORS Standard demonstrates a company’s commitment to safety and best practice and is defined by four basic requirements that a fleet operator of lorries or buses must meet if they wish to become FORS accredited. These include vehicle and driver management, safety and operations. A holder of FORS Bronze for one year, BPH Attachments has successfully demonstrated it has met enhanced safety standards in order to be elevated to FORS Silver. These include improved safety features on vehicles such as blind spot cameras and audible warning systems. By achieving FORS Silver, BPH Attachments’ vehicles will also be compliant with the new Direct Vision Standard regulations, which come into force in Greater London from the end of October. Matt Bastable, Sales Director at BPH Attachments said, “We are delighted to be awarded FORS Silver and have worked very hard to improve our fleet to meet this elevated standard. We are committed to ensuring our fleet remains as safe and compliant as possible at all times. Achieving FORS Silver will give our customers and other road users the confidence that BPH Attachments is serious about road and workplace safety.” demolitionhub.com

I was one of the original direct employer advertising execs at Reed.co.uk’s leading job board a decade ago and it was here that I cut my teeth in the trade and gained a passion for recruitment advertising. I learned the excitement and reward that companies like Sky, BP, GSK and Vodafone gain from easily sourcing school leavers, grads and those qualified and experienced via a simple-to-use direct platform allowing job seeker to find the right job role. DemolitionCareers.co.uk follows this same rule with a smaller, bespoke arena tailored to the demolition industry, allowing

The media company’s Demolition Hub brand aims to bring the industry positive news, views and video, while its industry-specific www.demolitoncareers.co.uk provides a site for advertising and seeking jobs. Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library, said, “We’re delighted to be working with the team at

Chambers Media. Our aim has always been to match candidates with as many relevant jobs as possible and the impact of the pandemic has only made this more important. Advertising our clients’ demolition jobs on www.demolitioncareers.co.uk will give many more job hunters the opportunity to secure a new role.” Managing Director Ben Chambers said, “To support our industry in these trying times we wanted to increase the flow of jobs within demolition

and have therefore joined forces with the UK’s leading job board to offer potential candidates more options. “I cut my teeth in the recruitment advertising industry a decade ago and even then, CV-Library was a leading player. This led me to investigate how it sits in the marketplace now and I was astonished to see how much it has developed. “CV-Library currently hosts more than 130,000 live jobs, with more than 10,000 companies
