Welcome to Demolition Hub’s traditional endof-year print offering, providing those requiring all manner of demolition services across the country a comprehensive directory of all UK demolition contractors.
Once again, our data team has been diligently updating our records of registered contractors to be able to compile and offer the most comprehensive and useful demolition directory available. This is supplied free of charge to every organisation and individual that requires the use of demolition contractors.
The 2023 edition allows a helpfully accessible search via a county split as well as an all-encompassing A-Z listing of every UK demolition contractor.
We offer no premium listings and regardless of which trade body a contractor may or may not be a member of, we have everyone on a level playing field, readily available to those requiring their services.
This directory will be posted out before the close of 2022 and will be available throughout the year to anyone requesting a copy via: directory@globalnews.media.
Our gargantuan circulation ensures that this will land on the desks of decision makers within the fields of construction, national and local government, fire stations, architectural practices and demolition.
I wish to thank all those who have supported us in 2022 in both this the third Demolition Hub Demolition Directory and for the full complement of six issues of Demolition Hub magazine, once again delivered on time to a UK and global circulation of those working in, with and for the demolition industry.
I am sure those who regularly read Demolition Hub will realise this, but I feel it’s very important to continue to state that in 2023 our goal, tone and attitude will remain exactly the same as it has been since we began three years ago.
We will continue to report on the positive elements from this fantastic industry, revel in the engineering marvels and impressive projects completed by British contractors and as since day one: #championdemolition.
We thank you for joining us.

Cover story: LiuGong 939F
LiuGong continues its focus on demolition with the latest F Series machines. The new 939F builds on the success of the 939E in the UK but is now available with a narrow undercarriage (< 3.0 m width) to tackle the European markets. The first unit has gone to work in Kemnath, Germany for renowned demolition specialists ‘Plannerer Das Abbruchunternehmen’ as part of its fleet of 300 machines.
LiuGong’s Product Manager Harry Mellor said: “We’re now carrying the success of the demolition business in the UK across the water and into Europe. By continuing to listen to customers and adjusting our machines’ design we’re becoming a great choice for specialist contractors. The 939F has been given a number of upgrades to the E Series, now with a larger hydraulic pump, heavier counterweight and
increased attachment control providing more productivity with large attachments.’
The 939F is part of the latest launch in F Series machines, which began in November last year. The UK got a first look at the 30-40 t range with the 936F construction spec. model being launched at Hillhead in June. Other models in the range include the 930F 933F, and 942F, giving a total of five models for customers to suit different applications and needs.
LiuGong says the 936F is aimed at construction customers, the 939F is aimed at demolition customers and the 942F is for quarrying.
With a mass of just under 40 t, the 939F boasts some impressive specifications:
• Cummins L9 engine producing 219 kW net
power and 1,526 Nm torque.
• Two Kawasaki hydraulic pumps providing a total flow of 666 L/min
• High productivity with 290 kN bucket tear-out force and 196 kN arm tear-out force.
• Premium in-cab comfort with luxury heated air suspended seat and only 69 dB in-cab noise level.
• Powerful lifting and stability with 8.5 t counterweight.
• Ability to set 25 work tools on the display for pressure and flow.
Demolition Directory Online
Assuming you are not reading this on a tablet, phone or computer, you will now have the 2023 Demolition Directory in your hands and be flicking through it on your desk. Now it is time for me to introduce you to you the online equivalent…
We launched the sister to this favourite end-of-year title a few years ago and it sits happily and usefully in cyberspace for your convenience.
www.demolition.directory
From the outset you can tell what it is – a directory of every UK demolition contractor, sorted by region.
We always look forward to producing the printed Demolition Directory each year as it is a little different from the Demolition Hub magazine. Yet as up to date as this is now (assuming you are reading in the early part of 2023), there
is always the possibility of unforeseeable changes.
This is where the website www.Demoliton.Directory comes in. We update it weekly and as and when we are notified of changes, giving the user an upto-date resource.
We are proud to make both the annual Demolition Directory and the online www.Demolition. Directory available for your convenience.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London. United Kingdom 1 September 2023
For those of you who did not see our extensive social media coverage of this, we recently signed the contract that, for one evening only, gives us the run of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the fifth annual British Demolition Awards.
The awards is now partnered with and held alongside sister event The British Asbestos Awards, which was last held in September at the King Power Stadium in Leicester.
For the fifth year we are moving around the UK, having begun at the
Belfry in Sutton Coldfield before moving to Manchester, then down south to Brighton and back to the Midlands at the King Power. We have now selected London and the extremely impressive Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the destination of choice for 1 September.
The world’s most technologically advanced stadium gives us an increased capacity of up to 500 contractors and suppliers whose business interest is in demolition and/or asbestos removal.
I invite anyone to get involved and book a table to join me and my team and 500 industry professionals for an evening of awards, networking and fun.
While principal sponsorship has been taken for the British Asbestos Awards – thank you to Empire Asbestos for their second year of support – and has been pretty much been secured for the Demolition Awards, there are still plenty of options to sponsor an award and a lot more.

“The proceeds from the 2023 CIM Auction will benefit the CIM National Steering Committee (NSC) and support the current CIM programmes at Middle Tennessee State University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Texas State University, California State University –Chico, South Dakota State University, the Executive MBA programme, as well as help fund scholarships,” said Ben Robuck, Chairman of the CIM Auction Committee.
Presentations highlight CIM goals
Designed to provide graduates with a broad array of initial career opportunities within the concrete industry, the four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Concrete Industry Management (CIM) provides the concrete industry with future managers and leaders.
CIM is a business-intensive programme providing solid management skills specifically for the concrete industry. Students participate in a curriculum that fosters educated, articulate professionals grounded in basic business management and able to manage people and systems. Students experience fundamentals of concrete, properties, and testing; concrete construction; and the latest technology and techniques, preparing them to promote products or services related to the concrete industry.
Honouring an industry legend
World of Concrete established this student award in honour of “Big Bob” Weatherton. Weatherton, who died in 2016, had been closely associated with the founding of World of Concrete, being named an industry legend in 2015. Weatherton revolutionised the concrete pumping industry by developing the articulating boom arm for concrete pumps, which allowed boom trucks with long reaches to travel easily to jobsites. Weatherton was a catalyst of change supporting concrete, producers, and design professionals – his contributions to the concrete industry serve as a motivating example for all CIM students.

We are CONEXPO virgins. I had sorted everything with the organisers for us to appear in 2020, but with the setup my team and I were involved in it would have been a nonsense and wasted content. So, now as Demolition Hub celebrates its fourth calendar year with a very strong magazine and media brand behind us, we look forward to reporting back in April’s Demolition Hub and way before then on the socials and YouTube.

CONEXPO-CON/ AGG
2023:
Focusing on the next level of sustainability in construction
With construction technology around sustainability significantly advancing in recent years, CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 is already set to have the biggest focus on sustainability since the show began in 1948.
CONEXPO-CON/AGG Show Director Dana Wuesthoff said: “The construction industry and CONEXPO-CON/AGG are evolving in many ways to adapt and showcase sustainable technologies,
products and practices supporting a more sustainable world. More than ever, show attendees will see sustainability in action, from electric and hydrogen powered construction equipment, to more recyclable materials and waste reduction opportunities, to changes we’re making to the show to better support sustainability.”
Here’s how CONEXPO-CON/ AGG is putting sustainability at the forefront.
The Arbor Day Foundation Partnership
One of the biggest sustainability efforts on the part of CONEXPO-CON/AGG directly is a newly announced partnership between the show and the Arbor Day Foundation.
CONEXPO-CON/AGG and the Arbor Day Foundation are working towards planting 130,000 trees in forests of greatest need, one for every show registrant.
Additionally, CONEXPOCON/AGG exhibitors and attendees can contribute to the Arbor Day Foundation’s funds, allowing them to further their goal of involving themselves in its mission of planting, nurturing and celebrating trees around the globe.

Sustainable Tech on Display
Across the show floor, sustainable technologies, products and practices will be on display. Here is a sample of what will be featured:
Volvo Construction Equipment has already announced they will bring several electric and autonomous pieces to their stand in the Festival Lot, including their EC230 electric excavator pilot, their Zeux autonomous concept wheel loader, and their HX04 prototype hydrogen articulated hauler.
Just steps away, Caterpillar (Booth F-9127) will bring four battery electric machines as well as a series of prototype batteries for off-road equipment ranging from 48600 volts.
CONEXPO-CON/AGG attendees can also expect:
• Aerial work platform specialists Skyjack (Booth F-9427) will have their new SJ120 E on hand, a zero-emissions mast lift with a 30% improvement in duty cycle.
• Asphalt recycling equipment from Pavement Recyclers LLC (Booth S-5966) and VSS Macropaver (Booth C-32073) use different processes for recycling asphalt, keeping it out of landfill. “The Arbor Day Foundation is excited to be the official nonprofit sustainability partner of CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023,” said Becca Hebbard, Corporate Partnerships Manager for the Arbor Day Foundation. “As one of the world’s most trusted and experienced tree planting organisations, we work with organisations of all sizes to help them meet their corporate sustainability, ESG, and CSR goals. Whether you’re looking to help protect biodiversity, contribute to wildfire recovery, bring the benefits of trees to a community in need, or add verified forestry carbon credits to your emissions reduction strategy, the Arbor Day Foundation is uniquely positioned to connect you with meaningful projects all over the world.”
• Construction pros who want to maximise their energy efficiency can explore Kubota’s V3307 MicroHybrid engine (Booth S-84415) to install in existing equipment, saving fuel with the attachments they use, like Rototilt’s (Booth F-8338) Rototilt Control system.
• With Rapid Barrier Systems’ (Booth S-61515) water-inflatable barriers, contractors who work in disaster recovery could save up to 600 sandbags per barrier and not have to worry about disposal should they become contaminated, not to mention the fuel needed to haul them on and off site.
• Demolition contractors wanting to reduce waste and preserve still-usable material can see Aquajet’s Hydrodemolition robots at the Brokk booth (Booth C-20349), which can help remove damaged concrete while leaving still-good concrete and rebar reinforcement intact.
• Compaction is another place where low-efficiency engines can be replaced with battery
• Small engine specialists Briggs & Stratton will bring their Vanguard (Booth D-1033) brand’s swappable lithium-ion batteries to CONEXPO-CON/AGG for the first time, available for attendees to test out. And for construction pros who want to make sure their batteries are in proper working condition, Redline Detection (Booth N-10532) is bringing their battery coolant and leak detector.
• When it comes to equipment, diesel or electric-powered, the environmental impact is more than just emissions, but lubricants.
B3C Fuel Solutions (Booth S-61545) is bringing products to the show to help contractors eliminate waste by restoring emulsified/damaged oil and make sure lubricant that does find its way to the environment is nontoxic and biodegradable.
• Waste water is a major issue, including when construction equipment needs cleaning. Waste2Water (Booth S-64429) is bringing solutions to CONEXPOCON/AGG to help equipment operators keep waste and chemical-laden water out of the environment.
• Once attendees have all their sustainable equipment picked out and ready, AT&T’s Equipment and Machinery Solutions team (Booth N-12700) is bringing a solution to help track their actual Scope 1 emissions versus their targets.

Redcar blast blowdown
Demolitions are visually stunning events. Capturing them for posterity, marketing, or stakeholder relations makes perfect sense
Historically, demolitions were filmed from afar with very little impression of the dynamism of the explosion –save the odd shaken camera or two. Nowadays, drones and sacrificial cameras that transmit footage live, enable companies like Sky Revolutions to capture and record these incredible events.
November saw Sky Revolutions working on its largest demolition filming project to date – the blowdown of the blast furnace at the Teesworks site in Redcar. This was the third demolition the company recorded for the contractor Thompsons of Prudhoe.
As rehearsals are impossible, there is only one chance to get the filming right, so planning and preparation are done well in advance and with considerable care. For this type of operation on this type of site, it was crucial for the contractor to

use a commercial drone operator and filming specialist with experience of working in this sector.
Altering the skyline
The old blast furnace was a significant landmark – dominating the Teesside skyline for more than fifty years and once producing 3.6m tonnes of iron a year. According to local Mayor Ben Houchen, it had in that time defined Teesside’s history and shaped its communities.
Its destruction was understandably of interest to the area and was therefore widely covered both live and throughout the day in national and international media. The pressure to ensure it was captured in an engaging and accurate way was therefore considerable.
The blast furnace stood a whopping 365 feet tall – the second largest in Europe on its opening in the late ‘70s. Drones would be able to capture this structure falling – perfectly, but how did Sky Revolutions achieve the final multiangle film?
Experienced team
The company had previously worked on the filming of a number of other demolitions, including the cooling towers at the old Eggborough Power Station in 2021. The film from this particular blowdown went globally viral and was covered throughout the media from the BBC to Fox News in the US. The company remains one of the only commercial drone operators in the world to professionally record demolitions from the air and were therefore a natural choice for Thompsons of Prudhoe.
Working well in advance, Sky Revolutions began by putting together the right team for the job. The final Redcar team was led by Chris Carter, Senior Account Manager and an experienced construction project controller. It consisted of drone pilots and camera operators – all of whom had experience of working with MEWP equipment (used to place sacrificial cameras) and all of whom
had worked on previous demolitions for Thompsons – with a good understanding of their preferences.
Chris says: “I need to be able to trust my team implicitly on the day; to know the cameras have been correctly set up, and that all safety procedures are adhered to. In short, it’s my responsibility to ensure that we capture everything in a way that doesn’t compromise either Thompson’s activities on the day, or the experience of spectators and the local community on the ground.
“Although flying a drone is now an accessible ‘hobby’, they are potentially dangerous tools, and the combination of dangerous tools next to explosive demolitions requires incredibly careful planning. There is a world of difference between the commercial operations we undertake as Sky Revolutions and simply launching a drone and switching the camera on.
“I need to be completely satisfied that we’ve done our due diligence, that my team are communicating and that my client, Thompsons of Prudhoe, are happy with the way we work and the planned outcomes. It is this planning and control on the day, coupled with the skills of the team that means we always deliver.”
Each member of the team had worked on multiple construction projects in the past and were experienced in the limitations of working in remote and difficult environments. Working without access to power or other services for example requires careful thought – any delays can eat into the battery life of a drone – hence the importance of mitigation in the planning process. On structurally dangerous sites, an experienced crew with the correct awareness, training and PPE was vital.

case study
Setup on the day
Having gone through a series of pre-flight checks before arriving in Redcar, the team undertook a preplanning drone flight on site. This included a site-specific risk assessment, camera position review and gap analysis to sense-check the initial film ‘storyboard’.
Understanding the processes in the contractor’s ‘blowdown manual’ is also a critical part of the planning process. Chris Carter again: “Reviewing the blowdown manual helps us understand where the charges are being placed, and how and where the building will fall. From this information, we can plot the camera and drone positions so we can get the most dynamic shots on the day.”
On demolitions, the high impact shots tend to be those where the structure is falling towards the camera. These shots together with other filmic content need to work together to produce the final dynamic film requested by the contractor.
Sky Revolutions uses its aerial filming and photography knowledge to plan every type of output in advance. Understanding how a particular shot can be used in the final edit helps speed the set-up process on the day. From planning how dust movement and fire can be shown, to understanding how to match music with falling steel – all of this knowledge is wrapped up in the plan that Chris’ team enacts on site.
Smashing up the cameras
The question that Sky Revolutions are asked more than any other? What happens to the cameras that get hit by falling debris? The answer is simple. These are sacrificial cameras – designed to be destroyed, but not before they’ve transmitted the valuable footage the team sets out to achieve.
So how do they work? Sky’s sacrificial cameras run on low voltage power and transmit data over an ethernet cable. The use of sacrificial cameras is also important in terms of safety as the team does not have to
collect the cameras from areas that would be potentially unsafe after the demolition has taken place.
The number of cameras used on the day depends on the specific brief. Patrick Rebelo, Pilot and Editor at Sky Revolutions explains: “We decide on the number of sacrificial cameras after reviewing the blowdown plan and manual. As a team, we’ll brainstorm how to capture the specific building fall in the most impactful way. We’re always mindful of the wow factor – we want people to react in a positive way, to make their hair stand on end.
“Once we’ve properly reviewed the building, talked our way around it and looked at all the options against the storyboard, we’ll make a decision on how many cameras we’ll use and where we’ll put them. On this furnace blowdown, we used four sacrificial cameras and four drones, giving us eight individual viewpoints to work with in post-production.
“It’s also important that we stay a little bit flexible and able to make decisions on techniques as the demolitions unfolds. For example, we might plan to keep the drone in a specific position, but the way a dust cloud develops, or a piece of masonry falls might mean we change the plan at that precise moment to move the camera with the debris. This is where our experience comes into play and helps make sure we produce a really interesting film.”
A view from above
The drones used by Sky Revolutions are not the same as those used by the average hobbyist. Drone technology has rapidly advanced in recent years; for Sky Revolutions, using the latest drones means access to the best quality tools to create the best quality footage.
The drone ‘mix’ again depends on the brief and desired outcomes. For this particular shoot, the team used a DJI M300 with H20T, DJI Mavic 3, an FPV drone, and a DJI Avata. The DJI Mavic 3 has a 5.1k sensor and shoots at a frame rate of 200fps. For readers not into camera tech, that’s about 10 times faster than an average camera.
Flying over or near an explosion could impact the movement of a drone. Getting too close could mean it being pushed off course – affecting the quality of the film and the enjoyment of the viewer. Patrick Rebelo again: “During the pre-planning stage, we make sure that we position ourselves and the drones far enough away from the explosives to not cause any impact to the flight.
“The combination of drone and ground-based cameras helps mitigate against any impact from the explosion too and helps us get a mix of really great shots ready for the final edit.”
Thankfully, the weather held for the filming, only turning to rain

once the demolition was complete. Weather can have an enormous impact on a drone’s ability to fly and forecasting forms a significant part of the preflight planning.
Drones have an operational ‘envelope’ – a set of weather-related criteria within which the drone will fly effectively. Had the wind been too high, the demolition could not have been effectively filmed, but in any event, would not have gone ahead for safety reasons. The notice period for this type of blowdown is necessarily short due to the need for an accurate forecast. This means that Sky Revolutions’ team need to be ready to deploy at a moment’s notice and so flexibility in client servicing for these events is important.
Strict guidelines
Part of the pre-flight planning undertaken by Sky Revolutions includes the various permissions
and notifications it needs to manage with local authorities and national organisations like the CAA.
At the Teesworks site, there are additional exemptions that must be sought due to the proximity of the Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station situated on the north bank of the river Tees. A specific application is submitted to the CAA who must approve any flight for exemption in this area prior to the demolition day.
As the popularity of drone flight increases generally, and the popularity of filming demolitions increases specifically, safety issues become more critical.
Operating safely is a priority. The team at Sky Revolutions has long accepted that these events are popular with drone hobbyists who may want to get close to the action. For that reason, the company issues a ‘NOTAM’ – a notice to airmen containing specific information designed to improve air safety on the day.
With plans in place, risk assessments complete and pre-flight check done, the team can focus on the blowdown itself and concentrate on capturing the footage Sky Revolutions is famous for.
Adding value
One of the other benefits of deploying experienced organisations like Sky Revolutions to undertake this type of film capture, is the additional creative value they can add to the final output.
The Sky team contains pilots with many skills – including flying FPV (first person view) drones. The perspective from an FPV drone adds a little extra excitement to a blowdown film and the final film from the Teeside blowdown includes some FPV footage near the start.
This footage is collected separately in close communication with the team from Thompsons of Prudhoe, and then edited during postproduction. It gives the viewer
34 | Demolition DIRECTORY 2023 www.demolition.directory
the feeling of being in the drone’ and adds additional dynamism almost as though being on a roller coaster.
Generating a feeling of excitement helps the commissioning contractor engage their audiences with the detail of their work and showcase the culmination of months of preparation in a highly captivating way. This, coupled with the inevitable media interest in these events goes some way to boosting the marketing power of demolition contractors around the world.
The UK is leading in the way demolitions are recorded and marketed – thanks in large part to the type of output delivered by companies like Sky Revolutions. And that’s not the only result of this type of film.
Since the Teesworks blast furnace demolition, Sky Revolutions has been inundated by requests from film makers and music producers to use the film in their own productions –from documentaries to pop videos
and news pieces. The final decision of course lies with Thompsons of Prudhoe – to do with the footage as they like, but there is no getting away from the fact that a demolition film of the standard produced by Sky Revolutions is in demand. And it’s easy to see why.

The IDE’s Foundation Degree in Demolition Management: an honest
review from my brief experience
by Ben Chambers
Earlier this year I enrolled on the Institute of Demolition Engineers’ Foundation Degree in Demolition Management, the worlds first and only dedicated foundation degree course in demolition.
The Foundation Degree in Demolition Management (FDDM), is an eleven-module, twelvemonth-long course administered by the IDE and the University of Wolverhampton. It gives students a solid foundation in demolition management, a basic academic qualification and the skills to further develop in pursuit of achieving the master’s degree.
Why did I enrol?
Twenty years ago I was a design engineer apprentice for a Korean car manufacturer and after four years, just as I became a fully qualified engineer, the whole of the UKdivision was made redundant.
I have an HND in Engineering and although over the years my advertising/salesman/publisher/ odd-job man cape has hidden this
former part of my life I have always been interested in how things work.
With one of our strongest brands Demolition Hub going from strength to strength, my desire for demolition knowledge has grown exponentially, in part to allow me to talk with my clients (many now friends) in the industry at somewhere close to their level.
Like many things COVID prevented this from being normally run and the proposed classroom learning experience was stopped
this year. But after the past couple of years, I am sure others like myself were far from phased about it being an Zoom orientated learning experience and in fact, I found that much more convenient that a seven hour round trip to Wolverhampton.
Stephen McCann was our lead lecturer and he immediately put my fellow intakes and me at ease with his dulcet Dunediner tones, an interesting whisky Zoom backdrop (brought up by intakes more than once) and a dry, yet smiley manner.
founder of Demolition Hub magazine, joined on intake four of the world’s first and only demolition foundation degree course in early 2022.
The Foundation Degree in Demolition Management (FDDM) is aimed at all anyone, be they demolition practitioners or non-demolition persons. This distinguishes the FDDM from other demolition courses.
This, requires a different mode of thinking when considering joining a course that acknowledges Socrates’ assertion that “education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel”.
by Stephen McCann
Ben Chambers, the Global News Media Managing Director and
The FDDM does not set out to teach people how to demolish buildings. That is not the point of this course and no course really
36 | Demolition DIRECTORY 2023 www.demolition.directory
Stephen will talk to you until you are done talking and get it. He welcomes calls (rather than emails) well after the lecture and although not having done it, I am sure he would have welcomed calls late at night.
He is an old school lecturer, one of the ones you remember from school who made you not want to muck about or play truant but to listen and learn.
He makes learning enjoyable and although some had gone the
has that as a learning outcome. Even the National Demolition Training Group’s CCDO training course has a very limited scope for teaching actual demolition practices.
What the FDDM does is give the tools and skill sets so that the students develop the ability to think critically, enhance their ability to communicate complicated ideas clearly and give them a basic understating of the core subjects.
These include research methods, occupational health and safety for demolition, asbestos removal, demolition methodology, and the application of plant and equipment, to name a few.
The first intake of FDDM was delivered by the lead lecturer, Dr Terry Quarmby with additional
university route previously and others like me had not, he took his time to explain what was expected from him and his team on submitting a paper.
The picture I am painting is an honest one, and all sounds more than appealing, but I only made it to May and module 3.
So how come I didn’t quite last a quarter of the entire course and felt compelled to throw in the towel?
I will not profess to being any busier than anyone else making
lectures by Mick Ulyatt, who delivered the Fundamentals of Contract Management and Ethics and Standards, and John Orell, who delivered the Structural Appreciation modules.
Course delivery was then taken over during the second intake by PERSES lead lecturers Yazan Osaily and me who, along with plant specialist Mick Daynes and asbestos specialist John Regan joined Mick Ulyatt and John Orell in delivering the updated FDDM.
I took on the role of lead lecturer in module eight of the second intake of the FDDM before agreeing to continue the role and update the syllabus for the third intake.
The introduction of additional specialists has helped strengthen
their way in the world, but having been to North America for business three times over that period of learning, including World of Concrete and the National Demolition Association’s Annual Conference, as well as producing five magazines – in demolition, asbestos removal and construction equipment – producing a paper that I would have been proud of became harder and harder. I am not one to just submit anything and I let Stephen know I was not able to give it 100% or anywhere near at the earliest possible opportunity. Time was my nemesis.
One thing I will say is, never say never to rejoining the course. Stephen has been brilliant in offering alternatives to allow me to continue in the future.
While I only go on site when invited, my tools are a phone and a laptop and I have absolutely no practical demolition experience. Although it is difficult if you like me have no demolition history, if you can give it the time I highly recommend those working in the industry to get signed up for 2023 and for the course.
the course and varying the delivery styles helps keep the students engaged for the entire term, which has further added to the course’s success.
While Ben was not able to complete the course and achieve the degree due to his increased workload, this should not deter others from joining FDDM, for as the great Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius said: “If a thing is humanly possible, consider it within your reach.”
With that in mind, we hope to get Ben back on the course one day and seeing it through to completion.

CDI clears way for bridge reconstruction
Bridge demolition offers both challenges and opportunities that are often best addressed through the application of explosives as a safe and effective option to conventional demolition. While bridge demolition projects are usually performed to remove an obsolete structure and/or to make way for new construction, the recent partial demolition of
resulting in a six-foot shift in the remaining deck system, while the north bridge suffered significant damage to its centre span and pier systems. As a result, the bridge was incapable of carrying traffic on either the north or south structures.
support system could not be salvaged. Contrack International Inc. of Arlington, Virginia, was awarded the main contract for the reconstruction.
the Mudeirij Bridge in Lebanon was anything but usual.
At over 230 feet high and nearly 1,600 feet long, the parallel, twin span Mudeirij Bridge is the largest bridge in Lebanon and the tallest in the Middle East region according to the Lebanese government. With Damascus as its destination city, the bridge is the nation’s key connection for east-west commerce. During the 2006 Lebanon war, an Israeli air strike destroyed more than half of the south bridge span,
The U.S. Embassy Team for Lebanon Reconstruction retained Michael Baker Corporation of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, to assess the integrity of the structure and make recommendations for expedient repairs of the north structure and the long-term reconstructions of both bridges.
The Michael Baker Corporation determined that the damage to the north structure, concentrated at one span and the associated piers, was repairable, while the south bridge’s five remaining spans and much of its substructure
Faced with the challenge of providing for the precise explosive demolition of the south bridge in tandem with reconstruction efforts on the north span, the U.S. Agency for International Redevelopment (USAID) and its reconstruction contractor solicited Controlled Demolition Inc. (CDI) of
Phoenix, Maryland, to assess the situation and recommend a comprehensive explosives demolition plan.
CDI’s long-standing relationship with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) encompasses hundreds of successful projects on or over navigable waterways and the co-authoring of a technical field manual on structural demolition. In 1995, the USACE presented CDI with its highest recognition of excellence, the Silver Castle
60 | Demolition DIRECTORY 2023 www.demolition.directory
Award, for demolition of a former Soviet radar facility in Latvia. In addition, CDI was already a familiar presence in Lebanon and this Middle East region, having successfully completed demolition of both the Sheraton Beach Hotel and the Hilton Hotel in Beirut as well as the Sheikh Abdullah Alakl Center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Based on these regional projects and a 60-year history of unparalleled global experience, CDI was the contractor of choice to address the current situation.
As part of the $30 million reconstruction project and a $500,000 demolition contract, CDI’s $150,000 fee called for the safe felling of a 700 foot section comprising the south bridge’s five surviving spans and selected portions of its substructure. Each heavily reinforced span was comprised of three pre-stressed/ pre-cast box girders that were post-tensioned together before being topped by a reinforced 10-inch-thick, cast-in-place deck, all supported on 10-foot by 24foot cast-in-situ pier stems. Successful demolition would
require the elimination of three heavily damaged piers while preserving two relatively undamaged piers closest to the west abutment, and three plinths to be reused in the new bridge. All demolition was to take place with primary consideration for protection of the north structure located just three feet away. The task would eventually require the drilling of 1,459 holes and the detonation of 1,001 pounds of explosives.
“Any project that includes the demolition of a structure that has been partially compromised is a special challenge,” explains Mark Loizeaux, CDI president. “You cannot be certain how the damaged components may react. The original collapse had resulted in cracks in the west stem faces of piers 4 and 5, creating a concern that the weakened stem walls might fail compressively as they rotated during the implosion sequence, causing the deck to hit the north structure as it fell.”
Subsequent challenges were to be confronted as the project progressed. Due to United Nations sanctions placed
on Lebanon since the 2006 war, restrictions on importing explosives forced CDI to initially rely on local explosive supplies, although they were assured in advance that the locally available electric and non-electric blasting caps specified were fresh and immediately available.
Demolition of piers 5 and 4 were planned as part of the final blast sequence. Initial loading began with pier 5, then pier 4, followed by series wiring of the charges in both piers. It was during the wiring stage that excessive and differential resistance in the blasting circuitry was discovered.
As an investigative measure, CDI began testing the electrical resistance of individual caps in each delay period and found unacceptable variances. With approval from the site safety director, detonation of selected unloaded caps revealed further problems. The caps had a failureto-detonate rate of 29.9% to 52% over three tests. Although labour intensive and not without risk, all of these charges had to be unloaded and removed until
www,demolition.directory Demolition DIRECTORY 2023 | 61
the resistance problem could be determined.
Upon further questioning of the local explosives supplier, it was revealed that the caps had been stored well past the manufacturer’s mandatory disposal date. Some caps were manufactured in 1999 and should have been destroyed three years following the date of manufacture, while others of Indian manufacture were only one to one-and-a-half years old but were corroded due to improper transport and storage. All had been offered to CDI during the bid phase without provision of the technical sheets or manufacturer’s dates of production requested by CDI.
“When you are working in a foreign country, you cannot assume that business practices and standards found in the U.S. are going to prevail,” Loizeaux says. “With the assistance of the U.S. Embassy, USAID and the USACE, however, we arranged for an emergency shipment of fresh, non-electric blasting caps from Dyno Nobel in Sweden.”
A second explosives-related challenge had to be addressed when it was found that the locally manufactured explosives
compound provided contained a percentage of ammonium nitrate, a compound that deteriorates when exposed to water. In anticipation of heavy rain leading up to the scheduled blast day, each charge was placed in a plastic bag and sealed with silicone before being loaded into holes in the decks and piers.
Additional weather precautions included the construction of block barrier walls around holes cut into the deck to provide access into the box girders at five transverse sections of the span. This prevented the rain from flooding across the deck and running into the holes where the explosives would have been neutralised by the water. In addition, scaffolding with plastic tenting was constructed over these deck openings, allowing work to continue without delay to the schedule due to the persistent rain.
“Although these were isolated incidents, you can be certain that international work can be very demanding and is not as ‘exotic’ as it may, at first, seem,” Loizeaux says. “Even though this project was paid in American dollars from the USAID, State Department and administered
by the USACE with support by Michael Baker Corporation, there were few Americans on site. Only a handful of key personnel spoke English, and absolutely none of the labourers did.
“Issues as simple as verbal communication and as routine as inclement weather can become problematic on projects in truly Westernised countries. In countries like Lebanon, they become serious performance barriers if you are not prepared to address them in a timely fashion, with an alternate plan of action. Our depth of experience and comprehensive working knowledge of the industry, has prepared us to make critical, in-place, operational changes a necessary, regardless of local culture, work ethics or practices.”
While protection of adjacent property is always a priority, it becomes a critical issue when blasting in close proximity to retained construction. In anticipation of the sizeable debris fall, six feet of soil was placed over the temporary access road from the Beirut highway, which passed under the west end of span 2 and alongside the east face of pier 1.
To the east of this road, an

additional 10 feet of soil was added to create a berm cushion where CDI could fell span 2. An explosives notch was created in the box girders above the peak of the berm so that the falling span would “lock” over the soil berm and reduce the velocity of downhill slide into pier 2. With concern for the west face of pier 2, 10 feet of soil and another 10-foot wall of tires were placed against the west face of the pier for added protection against damaging impact of debris.
On 17 December 2007, at 2:14 pm, months of planning were compressed into 30 seconds of reality as timed blasts in the deck diaphragms and anchor bars between adjacent spans allowed all five bridge spans to drop vertically with no damage to piers 1 and 2. The stems of piers 3, 4 and 5 fell as planned, parallel to the deck line, leaving two plinths only minimally damaged. And, the protective precautions worked as anticipated, as the fall of span 2 was slowed by them berm of soil and gradually slipped down the steep grade, coming to rest on the protective barrier against pier 2 with no visual damage.
CDI’s primary goals of safety to personnel and removal of risk to the north span had been accomplished on schedule and within budget. Timely reconstruction of both bridges could now move forward without further delay to Lebanon’s economic recovery.
