BHP announces zero emissions partnership with Caterpillar In late August Anglo-Australian mining and petroleum exploration corporation BHP announced a partnership with Caterpillar to develop and deploy zeroemissions mining trucks. This milestone is the result of more than 12 months of close collaboration between the companies in analysing energy demands and the options to apply this new technology on BHP sites. To support progress towards BHP’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero

operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, BHP will have early access to zero-emissions equipment developed by Caterpillar and hands-on learning opportunities to ensure successful deployment at BHP sites. The collaboration will help shape the processes, technology and infrastructure that will be required to support zeroemissions machines and the mine sites of the future. Another critical element of the

collaboration will be to extend the parties’ efforts to support a more inclusive mining industry. Over the coming year, BHP intends to provide frontline operator and maintainer input into the Caterpillar design process, to support the development of machines that can be operated and serviced by a broader crosssection of the workforce. BHP’s Chief Commercial Officer, Vandita Pant, said: “We are pleased to announce our partnership with Caterpillar Inc. to develop and deploy zero-emissions mining trucks at BHP. Climate change is a critical global challenge and we know that partnering with others will help accelerate the transition to a low carbon future. “The opportunity for our teams to input into the design process also gives us confidence that the trucks will be safer and easier to operate for a workforce that’s more diverse than ever.” Denise Johnson, Caterpillar Group President, said: “Caterpillar is pleased to work with BHP on the next generation of large mining trucks and mine site technology. Deeply integrating our teams and timelines will allow for faster deployment to deliver zero-emissions solutions.”

Manitou Group posts healthy half-year results Manitou Group posted its results for the first half of the year in July, exceeding both its objectives and past experience across all markets. The results included the following: • H1 2021 net sales of €970m, up 27 per cent on H1 2020 • Order book on equipment, €1,788m vs. €555m in H1 2020 • Net income, €64.2m vs. €13.5m in H1 2020 • Outlook for annual revenue growth of around 20 per cent on 2020 Michel Denis, Chief Executive Officer of Manitou said: “To meet the high demands of our customers, all teams have been mobilised. Production rates are gradually being ramped up despite significant supply chain tensions. “In the first half of the year, we have a high net sales sequence with purchase prices only slightly impacted by the announced price increases and operating costs under control, resulting in a peak of the recurring operating income of 8.8 per cent of net sales, i.e. €85 million, as much as for the full year of 2020, a very good performance reinforced by a positive cash position at the end of June.

8

DIGGERSLIVE

“This sudden rebound in the markets is supported by very high inflation in our purchases, particularly in steel and transport, which will impact our financial performance in the second half of the year. “For the rest of the year, our sales are expected to be stronger than initially forecast, but below our customers’ demand. In addition, raw material increases will be fully implemented while our sales price adjustments will only bear fruit over

the end of the year and the first half of 2022. This configuration will have a substantial squeeze on the margin in the second half of 2021. “This sequence will allow us to deliver a strong improvement in our performance in 2021 compared to 2020, and leads us to upgrade our revenue growth outlook for the year of around 20 per cent compared to 2020 as well as to upgrade our recurring operating margin growth expectation for the year of around 130 basis points compared to 2020.”

Review by Division Product Division The Product Division achieved revenue of €802.8 million, up 29.5 per cent over six months compared to a 2020 baseline strongly impacted by the COVID-19 crisis (up 32 per cent at constant exchange rates and scope). This division benefited from the rebound seen at the end of 2020, increasing its revenue in all geographic areas and in all of its markets (construction, agriculture, industry). Services and Solutions Division (S&S) With a revenue of €167 million, the Services and Solutions Division recorded an increase of 17.6 per cent over six months (up 19 per cent at constant exchange rates and perimeter). Activity grew in all geographic areas, particularly in the APAM (Asia Pacific, Africa and Middle East) region, and in all markets, with the exception of service activities, which were more resilient in 2020.

INTERVIEW

THE EQUIPMENT ENGAGEMENT Matthew Bastable of BPH Attachments

Tell us about the history Q and development of BPH Attachments

BPH Attachments is a family run business established by my grandfather in 1972. There are three main aspects to the company: UK-wide hire (we have over 550 attachments in our rental fleet), the sale of new and used attachments and repairs of all brands of hydraulic attachments. We are importers for some of the most respected brands in the industry and serve customers across construction, demolition, scrap metal, recycling, road contractors, utility contractors, housebuilders, machinery dealers and plant hire. Recently, we have experienced significant company growth, including the relocation of our Coalville Midlands depot to a larger facility and the opening of our newest depot near Radstock in the south-west, which took place in summer this year.

about BPH Attachments’ QWhat business philosophy? Customer service and relationships are by far our number one priority. Having market-leading products is essential, and we’ve worked hard to achieve this, which is demonstrated by the quality of brands we sell. BPH is the sole distributor of PRODEM and the LaBounty dealer for the UK and Ireland. We are also dealers

for OilQuick, Dynaset, Augertorque and Berti. However, great brands on their own isn’t enough; the quality of the customer service must come hand-in-hand to ensure you don’t let those top products down, which is why excellent customer service, honesty and transparency are ingrained in our corporate DNA. To us, good customer service means delivering our promises. If we say we’ll deliver on a given time, that’s what we’ll do; if we say an engineer will be with a customer to perform a service on a certain day, we stand by our word. A customer once told me that when you do business with BPH, you get more than just a great product. That’s something that’s always stuck with me, as it’s exactly what we strive for.

us about your team and QTell working culture

Because family is at the core of our business, this feeling of inclusion and unity expands to everyone in the team, and all staff are treated as extended family members. Life at BPH isn’t about pointless rules and regulations – it’s about trust from the start. We afford our staff a high level of autonomy as we trust their judgement. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t have hired them. We enjoy a relatively low staff turnover compared with the broader industry, and some of our team have been with us for 10 or even 20 years. We even have generations of the same family in our team. The son of our long-standing Hire Manager is now training with us for an apprenticeship. Placing value on experience and skill as well as fresh, contemporary thinking ensures we strike a good balance between great customer offerings now and being innovative for the future. As a director, I understand the importance of creating a pleasant working environment where people want to be, as this enhances productivity and creates a positive culture. We encourage team members to voice any ideas they might have about how the business is run. We’re interested, we listen and, where feasible, we act.

customer service. The sales team needs to know their products inside out to earn all-important trust and be recognised as experts in their field.

You are the Sales Director. Q What makes BPH Attachments different and how do you express this to potential customers?

While our product range speaks for itself, our service is our standout differentiator. For us, it’s not about single transactions – it’s about long-term partnerships. It matters to us that we can help add value to our customers’ businesses by increasing productivity, helping them manage costs and reducing downtime. We believe this philosophy comes across in our customer service. Everyone knows each other in our industry, which is why reputation is everything. Understanding this is probably why we’re enjoying a healthy business half a century after my grandfather first set the company up.

Tell us a little about BPH Q Attachments’ current standout products That’s a hard one as we have so many strong products in our range. The whole of the PRODEM range is an integral part of our product portfolio, and it’s a brand that’s continually innovating and expanding. What’s key, however, is PRODEM’s tried and tested performance, which gives customers assurance that they’re investing in products that deliver power and reliability. The selector grabs are especially standout, as are our hydraulic hammers, well known for their strength and reliability. The LaBounty shears are another strong attachment. US-manufactured, they’re hands down a market leader; unsurprising, given they’re the best steel shear available. We have a huge range with the largest weighing in at a massive 20 tonnes.

does training reflect the QHow company’s culture?

Training is imperative in our organisation to ensure our skills and knowledge remain current. Whenever we launch a new product, we host training and development days, as well as service training. This is a direct reflection of our culture as it allows us to confidently offer marketing-leading products and deliver them with top-level

INTERVIEW

And how will BPH Attachments Q be developing these products in the future? We’re fortunate that our long heritage means that we have a breadth and depth of experience that enables us to accurately gauge customers’ changing needs and the development of the market. It also means that we know the importance of keeping ahead of the curve and never standing still. No one can predict the future, so it’s not about guessing what will happen and hoping you’re right – it’s about reacting rapidly to the ever-changing requirements of the industry and the customer, a willingness to be agile and relentless energy to swiftly adjust when the market demands it. For instance, in the last few months we’ve noticed a shift in the market where larger contractors are investing in new efficiencies. In response, we began to offer OilQuick’s quick coupler system, which

allows the operator to change attachments without leaving their cab and connects all hydraulic lines automatically.

How do you see the plant Q industry and BPH Attachments developing post-COVID? Like many companies, we had to make some adjustments in the way we operated during lockdown. Despite some of the challenges that period posed, we made some of our best sales ever as we were able to continue to support our customers. Post-COVID, we won’t be going back to how things used to be but appreciate of course that some customers and some projects want or need face to face contact. We’ll work to accommodate those safely while embracing some of the new ways into our day-to-day working. As for the future, the plant and construction industries in the UK are looking very bright. There are some huge infrastructure projects in the pipeline and already underway. While this is extremely encouraging, there are also new challenges for our industry to navigate. Our focus is therefore on understanding and addressing customers’ concerns and having the foresight to circumvent any issues before they arise. Although not easy, a lot of this can be achieved through foresight and effective logistics.

And further into the future, Q how do you see BPH Attachments’ and the industry’s

products in the next decade or so?

Our vision is to continue developing BPH Attachments based on our company’s foundations. We will never lose sight of what sets us apart (quality product coupled with exceptional customer service). Although the landscape and demands of the industries we serve will inevitably evolve over time, as long as we’re true to our core value of supporting our customers, then we know we’ll succeed, come what may. Technology will change, and indeed it should do to keep people safe and productive, but the company ethics should never wane.

INTERVIEW

continued success of the business. I feel it’s important to lead by example.

What do you find most Q rewarding and most challenging in your work?

ABOUT YOU What attracted you to the Q plant industry and how did you start out?

I’ve been in the industry for 20 years. As we’re a family business, I started out working in my school holidays, doing tasks such as cleaning the equipment, and then later I prepared equipment for hire and sales and worked in the workshop. Although I’m now a director of the company, I learned the ropes from the ground up. I’ve always had an interest in plant machinery, so it made sense to make a career out of it, especially when the opportunity was presented to me. It’s a privilege to work in the family business and to evolve it for the next generation.

Have you been involved with Q any interesting projects or developments in your career?

I’ve been lucky enough to work on some very interesting projects including Crossrail in London, Thames Tideway,

and Hinkley Point nuclear power station in the south-west. It’s fascinating and rewarding to be able to work with the teams on these projects and to contribute to their goal by ensuring they have the right equipment on site at the right time.

us about the different QTell aspects of your work

My role today is ultimately about leading and mentoring the sales team and I’m involved with customers at many different levels. As we’re a relatively small company, I find myself involved in many other areas of the business too, such as working closely with the Marketing Manager and with suppliers when it comes to product development. I’m grateful of these opportunities as it means I’m at the coalface when it comes to expanding into new markets and offering new products to customers. To me, leadership is exemplifying that customer service and relationships are key factors in the

What I find rewarding is when we work closely with customers and support them as a partner rather than just a supplier, by helping them deliver on their projects with support from our expert team. Developing staff is also something I enjoy. Some of our team members have been with us since they left education and to see them flourish, learn skills and gain responsibility is hugely rewarding. For instance, our Workshop Manager joined as one of the first members of the team. Now, decades later, not only is he extremely experienced and knowledgeable, he also makes a highly significant contribution to how we run the business. When it comes to challenges, no one could have predicted what 2020 had in store. The impact of COVID on staff, suppliers and customers was not to be underestimated. We had to deal with things we couldn’t have foreseen and had little control over. But what doesn’t beat you makes you stronger.

What kind of projects would Q you most like to be involved with and where would you like to go next in the world of work?

Looking forward, we’re likely to be involved with large demolition and construction projects in the future, considering our recent product development. Our product offering has grown and we’re now offering larger selector grabs like the PSG 8000. As for me, I’m looking forward to continuing to mentor the team and ensuring we continue to offer our same level of highquality service as the company grows.

I’m a spring person. It’s the season that makes you feel there’s new life, energy and possibilities on the horizon. It comes with a sense of excitement.

QWhat’s your favourite cuisine? Chinese. My current go-to is beef chow mein and salt and pepper prawns. The Panda House in Horsham cannot be beaten.

Kelly Tanks: The story

20

DIGGERSLIVE

In 2012, Mark Stubbs was running a successful contracting company specialising in land drainage when Kelly Bryant started as his administrator. Mark introduced Kelly to working with water, creating balancing ponds, dredging rivers, creating wetlands and wildlife habitat. It was during this time the pair developed a long-standing relationship with the wildlife trust, further instilling in them the importance of protecting the environment, a value that has remained at the core of their business ever since. Before this, Mark had gained considerable experience working on pipelines in the UK, Russia and Southeast Asia. It was here Mark began to appreciate the work that could be achieved using natural resources and teamwork. When the pipeline days came to an end, Mark returned to the UK and began his groundworks contracting company. By the time Kelly joined, Mark was already harbouring ideas about introducing water treatment systems into his hire fleet. It was when a customer asked Mark if he was interested in buying a cylindrical water storage tank that things began to move forward. Mark accepted the tank, hoping that once refurbished it could be hired out. During the process of refurbishment Mark and Kelly began discussions about developing a water treatment system for use on construction sites. Their first ideas were to create a basic settlement tank and eventually, with some help, Kelly drew up a plan. Over the next year Mark and Kelly built more tanks, all the while learning more about water treatment, onsite requirements, and the drawbacks of systems already on the market. They came to understand that sites wanted systems that were simple to set up, simple to use and simple to empty. With this in mind, the pair designed the WTS, a settlement tank that includes a cage to housing flocculant blocks to enable simple flocculation (particles coalescing into lumps), an adjustable oil skimmer, a compartment for Lamella/Coalescing Media (tube settlers) to optimise settlement and a hopper bottom and dump valve to easily remove settled solids. Next, the pair introduced the Sack Frame to house sacks that would further filter waste water and retain suspended solids, unfortunately they found existing sacks were essentially builders’ sacks with a felt liner sewn that quickly became blocked and ineffective. Rather than give up on the premise, the pair sourced a liner and created the Adsorption Sack,

www.diggers.live

PROFILE

a sack specifically designed to enable solids to attach to the surface of the liner, eventually becoming heavy enough to drop into the sack leaving the liner clear to continue filtering. Interest for the systems quickly grew and in 2013 they were asked to commission systems for J Murphy & Sons and JN Bentley. At this point Mark decided to separate the growing water treatment fleet from his contracting company and set up a new company. The company was to be named Kelly Tanks and Kelly was invited to become a director. It wasn’t long before the pair realised the Adsorption sack could be used for many purposes, one of which being the retention and filtration of cementitious particles in concrete wash water. After much development, Kelly drew up plans and the CWS Concrete Washout was born. A cost-effective alternative to skips and suction wagons, the CWS is a plug and go system that allows concrete equipment and wagons to be safely washed-off onsite by separating the solids, recycling the water and neutralising the pH. Demand for Kelly Tanks’ innovative and user-friendly systems grew and soon the brand was receiving recognition. Kelly became 50 per cent shareholder

22

DIGGERSLIVE

in 2017 and the pair continued to add products and systems to their fleet. Mark and Kelly went onto design pH treatment systems that would proportionally dose using a pH reducing liquid. They also discovered existing methods for reducing pH levels were wasteful in their overuse of C02 and so designed systems that would only dose the required amount. This method can be found in their GWS and HpC system, designed to retain the solids and neutralise the pH of the water captured in hydro demolition, and again

in their modular pH dosing systems. While their fleet grew, so did their facilities and team (teamKT). Now, almost nine years later, Kelly Tanks has become an industry leader in concrete washouts, boasting the UK’s largest hire fleet while continuing to supply water treatment systems worldwide. Mark and Kelly consistently release new products each year and their innovative product range is complemented by their ongoing commitment to excellent quality and customer service.

Supporting people to construct the future

The Construction Skills Accelerator Centre, AccXel, is currently being built in Gloucestershire. The £3m centre is industry owned, led by sisters Nicola Bird and Natalie Bell, and co-funded by construction company K W Bell Group, HM Government and GFirst LEP by Natalie Bell, Growth and Partnership Director, AccXel Building a career path

AccXel is the brainchild of founder and Managing Director, Nicola Bird, and is the first co-funded, industry-led construction education facility in the UK. Being from a third-generation family construction company that will turn over in excess of £70 million in 2021, Nicola knows first-hand, the challenges facing the sector in sourcing and retaining employees. “Finding and retaining talent within our industry has historically been difficult and is getting worse. I want to secure the future of our company for the next generation and the only way to do that is to attract, train and retain the best people. We are just one company but this is echoed nationwide within all construction companies.” AccXel’s vision is to accelerate and sustain skills growth within construction by making it a career path of choice. The centre plans to facilitate this in three ways: • Engage and encourage school leavers: Through a comprehensive school engagement programme and working alongside two universities and the national Careers and Enterprise Company, AccXel will work closely with local schools to change the image of construction as a career path and interact with pupils at an early age

26

within primary and secondary schools. AccXel has adopted a corporate highend construction to compete with local colleges and universities, making the learners feel valued and proud to be there. • Life-long learning: Using the AccXel unique Skill STEPS© Programme, school leavers can shape their career as they wish, and this will encourage pupils to aspire and achieve. Working with a world-leading leadership development company, Skill STEPS© provides an educational pathway from NVQ Level 2 to master’s degree level and even doctorates. The possibilities are endless and achievable. • Endorsing diversity and opening doors: The number of women and ethnic minorities in construction (especially in management positions and at board level) is still not changing quickly enough and it is AccXel’s goal to inspire all under-represented groups into construction. We know anecdotally that many people start a career in construction by knowing the right people. With a fantastic collection of our Employer Partners who have adopted the same values, AccXel is opening doors, securing employment and providing a ‘safe’, open and exploratory place for new recruits to experience.

TRAINING

Working with industry

The most important value of AccXel is that it is led by industry. AccXel has secured two major industry partners who will have a massive impact on the learner experience and skill level. AccXel is proudly boasting the UK’s first JCB Plant Operations Trainee Programme. The programme is 15-months long and the trainees qualify with knowledge, experience, and skill on a 10-tonne 360 excavator, telescopic handler, six-tonne cabbed dumper and ride on roller (all courtesy of JCB). Using the latest technology in geomapping, radio detection and ground penetrating radar equipment, AccXel will also provide plant operators and new groundworkers with extensive exposure to the most efficient, safe and green ways of working (all courtesy of Leica Geosystems). Other industry partners who have donated products and equipment to our mock site include Keyline, FP McCanns, Site Equipment and Rugbi PPE supplies. The generosity and support shown to AccXel by the industry has been phenomenal and will only help it in delivering such a unique and industryready experience, something that is desperately needed.

comprehensive learning environment for every career stage. As AccXel’s Business Growth and Partnership Director, I believe in education and industry working together. There will be a huge emphasis within AccXel on construction technologies of the future, working practices that are already being introduced into the industry, that are simply not catered for within further education establishments. Specialisms such as drone training, retrofit skills, sustainable materials and Modern Methods of Construction will be prioritised, and partnerships with technologically advanced companies will ensure that we are at the forefront of future-ready construction training.

A career of choice

At AccXel, we firmly believe that construction is a career for all, and a rewarding one, both in terms of personal growth and remuneration. Both Nicola and I entered construction as career

changers (Nicola as a lecturer and me as a lawyer), and only discovered the breadth of opportunity once in the industry. Nicola said: “Schools still don’t advocate construction as a career of choice, on par with doctor, teacher or vet. When students are equipped with the right knowledge, training facilities and direct links into industry, we will make it an aspiration.” Construction of AccXel will be completed in November 2021, ready to welcome the first student and training cohorts in January 2022. We want AccXel in Gloucestershire to be an exemplar. The national skills shortage cannot be solved through one company and one centre; our goal is to see an AccXel in different counties around the UK, each inspiring and training our current and next generations. For more information, please contact Natalie Bell, natalie.bell@accxel.co.uk or visit www.accxel.co.uk.

Why AccXel is needed now

The lack of skilled labour has been spoken about for years and while quick fixes have worked in the short term, a long term effect has yet to be established. With Nicola and I both having young daughters, with Nicola’s eldest taking her GSCEs next year, we both understand the difficulties and challenges young people face when making career choices. Nicola said: “Colleges and employers are trying to treat apprentices like they did 10 or 20 years ago, but the simple fact is that the world has changed dramatically since then. The industry needs to mould itself around the younger generation by listening. From research, it isn’t about money, instead the desire to feel valued, supported and to have the ability to progress.” AccXel is helping to spread this message by giving employers an outlet to do just that. With 980 square metres of construction-focused space, AccXel offers a state-of-the-art, adaptive learning environment for those entering, as well as upskilling within the industry. With classrooms, a lecture theatre, a digital wing housing multi-use simulators and a mocklive construction site, the centre offers a

Safety Shield Global The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) collision avoidance technology into the construction industry by Safety Shield Global has not only improved the behaviour of site operatives, it has significantly reduced dangerous interactions between people and plant. Safety Shield has been training the AI to recognise humans and other specific objects in a wide range of environments. The cameras installed on plant and moving machinery are linked to the Safety Shield Vue online portal, as well as alerting operators to potential danger or highlighting driver fatigue, the system provides construction companies with a statistical breakdown of safety data and video recording of immediately before, during and after any alerts. Companies can then recognise where there may be a lot of incidents around a particular piece of machinery or in a specific area of the site. At the same time, people on the ground know that everything is recorded, so site behaviour is improving significantly. Safety Shield Global is breaking new ground in construction, a technological first that’s delivering real safety benefits.

Xwatch

TECHNOLOGY

The UK construction industry is quickly becoming one of the safest throughout the world. While Personal Protective Equipment has been the norm for many years, systems designed to keep plant and machinery working safely are high on the agenda with main contractors, clients and hire companies. In early 2019, a group of highly talented and experienced people from a variety of roles in the industry came together to start Xwatch. The UK technologist is one of the most recent entrants into this market and already a leader in its field, with its height and slew restriction system. The team have many years’ experience between them in the development and creation of safety and machine control products. They set themselves a challenge to make the most advanced and easy

Users have said the system is so easy to set up and use that it is likely to be used more often. The soft stop as the machine reaches its limit has also been hailed as a gamechanger with less stress and wear being placed on both machine and operator. The XW systems combine state-of-the-art telematics data output that can be viewed remotely, allowing users to know exactly what, where and when a machine is operating. The Xwatch suite of safety solutions has attracted some of the largest names in the UK plant hire industry to supply XW

to use product not just for the UK market but for a global industry. In the short time the company has been trading it has outstripped the combined UK market leaders in this technology and has also secured dealers and large contracts throughout Europe, Australasia, and North America. At the core of its success is the XW series of products. Designed to be installed in half the time of a traditional RCI system and most importantly, operator friendly, the XW systems feature fully adjustable proportional hydraulic controls, PLC controllers and Canbus based software all carrying a five-year warranty. What sets the XW series apart from its rivals is its ease of use. Any limit of slew, height or depth can be set with four button pushes on the in-cab screen. The operator can either enter a given position or set the limit by maneuvering the machine into place.

systems as standard when clients specify height and slew limitations. Flannery Plant Hire, Lynch Plant, M O’Brien Plantforce and Synergy Hire rank as some of the largest customers in the UK along with dealers such as Hitachi Construction Machinery UK and Molson Group now fitting the systems at their own facilities prior to machine delivery. The full range of XW systems are all designed and manufactured in the UK using only the highest quality components. The systems have undergone the most rigorous of testing scenarios before being launched to ensure they meet and exceed any current legislation both within the construction industry and the rail industry, where Xwatch is the only Network Rail approved safety systems supplier to be able to work up to the edge of the sleepers. While standard systems are the day-to-day work for the team, specialist applications are also catered for in-house. Sales Director Dan Leaney said: “We are always being asked if we can do this, to this. We will always approach a situation with an open mind and have yet to be defeated even on the most complex of systems. We have an unrivalled wealth of technical knowledge within the company that is hard to match.” Excavator safety systems make up the bulk of the company’s work, but its technological advances have also secured deals to supply systems to some of the UK and potentially Europe’s largest fleets of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) to ensure they stay within their safe working zones. Site dumpers are another area the company is fitting its systems to monitor both travel speed and angles when tipping. Machine safety plays a major role in the company’s fortunes, but it is not happy with sitting on its laurels. “We have several new systems coming to the market in the very near future,” Dan said. “We have been testing a number of game-changing products in both machine safety and telematics for the past few months to great success and acceptance. You can safely say that the Xwatch revolution has arrived.”

The Trade Plant Hire app has been developed by people with first-hand knowledge of the construction and trade sectors, to help people find and hire the right equipment for the best availability at a fair price. Ivan Yardley, Managing Director says: “For a time-poor tradesperson, finding the right tool for the job for exactly when they need it – and, more importantly, at the best available price – is not a

Equipment at your fingertips Trade Plant Hire is a website, which has an icon on the home screen of your smartphone, appearing as an app. It gives users access through their phones to a huge network of stockists in their area – allowing them to see in an instant the type and quantity of equipment available. Tradespeople can search for kit by entering a specific product, the postcode of a job site, as well as the duration of the hire. The app will then show a list of options, including description, price, VAT breakdown, deposit and insurance. Payments and deposits are made securely through the app and multiple transactions can also be made, with delivery on different dates and to

specified addresses. Once checkout is completed a VAT receipt and order notification is emailed to the customer. A fairer market for stockists Former England and Lions rugby union international, Tim Stimpson is part of the consortium behind the app. He says: “It’s good to help the smaller players with only one or two depots to compete with the nationals for local custom and allow them to demonstrate that they are focused on a quality, customer-centred approach in the process. “At the moment tradespeople might have to visit several different websites for quotes on a variety of hire equipment, only to find an item either unavailable or at a depot 50 miles away. This platform is a real game changer as it allows users to source equipment at a competitive price via their mobile phone.” Every box ticked Everything has been thought through carefully by the developers, who set great store in the app being easy to use and reliable. Customers are alerted the day before the end of the hire period in case they would like to extend; orders can be cancelled up to 12 hours beforehand and records of all previous transactions are stored on the app, including digital copies of VAT receipts. If there is an issue with kit when it arrives it can be reported on the app along with photographic evidence. Also, at the end of every hire period the customer is asked to rate the service. Personal recommendations and good ratings go a long way towards a customer trusting a stockist. Any supplier can create an account and list equipment on the app for free, whether it be a few items or their whole catalogue.

Huge productivity gains and payback for early adopter Richard Baker by Peter Haddock

TECHNOLOGY

For owner-operator Richard Baker of Baker Groundworks, it’s all about investing in the best equipment, attachments and technology, to make every hour as profitable as possible. As an early adopter of both tiltrotators with Engcon and the co-pilot MC1

40

DIGGERSLIVE

3D machine control technology from Leica Geosystems that helps control it, Richard has delivered a new Liebherr R 920 compact machine with a very special Scandinavian lighting setup. I recently visited him on site for a key customer, Chase Town Civil Engineering,

to see the new setup and talk to him about the amazing technology-led journey that has transformed his business. Having been an Engcon user for many years, Richard has specified the machine with a new tiltrotator with its EC-Oil quick hitch. It allows him to quickly change attachments from his expanding range, which now totals 17 buckets, rakes, levelling beams, compactors and even a brush attachment for cleaning up the site. Having previously operated a 14.5-tonne Case machine, Richard recognised the speed and productivity benefits he could achieve by moving up a class size. With all the attachments and a tiltrotator to transport, he was conscious of the weight of a larger machine. This was one of the key reasons he opted for the Liebherr, as he explained: “My business is all about fixed price work, so the faster I can do an individual task or house building plot in this case, the more I can do in a day and therefore the more I can earn. “When I first moved to 3D machine control with Leica Geosystems Co-pilot system in 2019, I realised some serious cost savings and productivity gains. “We increased turnover by 25 per cent, reduced our plant by 66 per cent, and reduced labour costs by 45 per cent. We haven’t tried to calculate the fuel savings or the reduced maintenance costs of not having to move the tracks to get into position thanks to the tiltrotator, but I know they would have also been significant.” Richard made all these savings possible thanks to the enhanced capabilities of the previous machine, which racked up a lot of hours, leading to his upgrade. Richard said: “Having recognised the need to replace the older machine earlier this year, I looked at different options that

would continue to help me make cost savings while increasing productivity still further. “This led me to research the market for larger machines, and the new 20-tonne Liebherr jumped out as the perfect choice, as it was significantly lighter than other OEM models in this class size. “Liebherr had also announced a partnership with Leica Geosystems to factory fit the technology, giving me further confidence to invest. I went for it with the machine’s specification as I spend so much time in it. It has the best seating option, footrests, specialist glass and the new 18 LED lighting system. It includes a specially fabricated Scandinavian style light bar with flashing LEDs and marker lights. These features will protect me from the sun and give me up to three hours of extra dig time in the winter months. “With the larger machine, I also invested in some larger Engcon buckets, allowing me to do fewer passes when loading and digging, saving valuable time. Having operated the Liebherr now for a few months, I have been tracking real world fuel consumption from its Stage V engine. It only burns an additional one litre per hour from a machine weighing over eight tonnes more than my previous machine. This means my fuel costs will be cut dramatically, which will go straight to my bottom line. “Since I first invested in the Leica Geosystems 3D machine control and ConX Cloud based system, that allows me to get models sent over ‘over the air’ via the GPS network straight into the machine. My main customer, Chase Town, has also invested in Leica 3D machine control. “They were always using Leica surveying equipment to create models, but now they are using the Leica MC1 system across the fleet. All ‘as built’ models are therefore available to me and the other operators onsite. “Because we are now all connected and working in this way, the difference is dramatic as everything is plotted exactly into the model. For example, as my main focus is on digging housing plots and the utility trenches, I have to make sure I position connecting trenches to the core infrastructure installed by the Chase Town teams. “Previously, I might have had to dig around an area for some

42

DIGGERSLIVE

time to locate these connection points. Now I use the same model and get the position straight away, saving valuable time. I am also benefiting from the expansion of the earthworks models Chase Town has put into place. This means that I can access the whole site from my in-cab Leica tablet. The team have even now included scaffold pads and avoidance zones for key underground utilities like the rising main we have on this site. “If I do go anywhere near an avoidance zone, my Leica tablet will go red and I will get an avoidance alarm in the cab. It is super clever and prevents any possibility of digging in the wrong place and damaging anything.” Having followed Richard for over two years, he is one of those great operators who gives you an honest opinion of technology and the industry’s future. He is a great guy who wants to stay ahead of the game, provide a great service to his customers, and do his bit for the environment by reducing carbon emissions.

He also makes himself available for other operators to help them understand the journey he has taken and how to take full advantage of everything he has learned. It certainly is an impressive setup and great to see his technology and innovation led journey continuing.

Vision Techniques SENSORVISION DRIVE

TECHNOLOGY

VT SENSORVISION DRIVE is a state of the art radar-based hazard detection system designed to solve the problem of dumper drivers unable to see over their heaped loads. Using FMCW microwave detection, this forward-facing obstacle radar is a 100 per cent accurate method of recognising a stationary or moving object in front of the vehicle. It has a three-tier detection zone, warning drivers via audible and visual signals. Blindspots on large machinery used in industries such as quarrying, mineral processing, construction and agriculture have been identified as a key reason for incidents involving heavy plant. Vehicles are constantly exposed to the elements with low lighting and night working decreasing visibility further and operating in close proximity to other vehicles and workers increases the risk of an incident. Passive systems give drivers essential visual information, but they still require the driver’s attention. VT SENSORVISION DRIVE is designed to provide added protection by giving the driver vital visual and audible signals to draw their attention to the appropriate camera.

Key features: • Ultra-compact dimensions (h x w x l): 2,000 x 1,405 x 2,685 mm (without forks) • Four-metre lift with 2,350 kg payload • Kubota V1505-E4B Stage V engine • With overall weight of 2,400 kg, can be towed on standard plant trailer • Improved vison for operator due to positioning of boom and cab design • Vast number of attachments can be fitted to universal quick hitch • Partners two larger models (T204 – two-tonne lift at four metres and T235 – 2.3-tonne lift at five metres)

company spotted a demand for low emission, eco-friendly equipment that allows clients to reduce their carbon footprint but not compromise the quality of lifts. GGR’s telehandler was the first

battery powered model on the UK market. It has been used heavily in the agriculture sector due to its zero CO2 emissions, low noise levels and smart safety components. On average, the increased purchase price is offset against savings in operation and maintenance costs after two years’ work, so it is more economical to run than the standard telehandler. A lifting capacity of 2.6 tonnes coupled with a maximum speed of 15 km/h, means the electric telehandler rivals the dieselpowered telehandler but without the emissions, making it ideal for working indoors. This eco-friendly solution to a traditional telehandler is ideal for any application where the use of a combustion engine is restricted, whether because of environmentally sensitive areas or urban environments. With all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering options and a heated cab, the eco-telehandler can be used in construction, forestry, and infrastructurebased applications and more. www.ggrgroup.com/telehandlers

Merlo ROTO range

TELEHANDLERS

Great innovations start with simple ideas, like that of the ROTO range, which radically changed the world of telehandlers with the introduction of a revolving turret system capable of rotating 360 degrees, with no need to reposition the machine. The ROTO range was launched in 1991, and from that time, this new telehandler concept became increasingly popular worldwide, rendering Merlo Group an industry leader. Merlo’s patented MCDC system allows the operator to set the speed of the hydraulic movements and to manage the geometric limits within, so the boom can be operated in complete safety. Merlo uses two load sensing flow

50

sharing pumps on the S Plus ROTO models with a stepper motor, allowing more precise multiple simultaneous movements with the electronic joystick. The stepper motor allows increasing hydraulic circuit reactivity and eliminates problems related to temperature and oil contamination. Compact dimensions minimise the machine’s physical footprint; the electronically controlled active suspension eliminates pitching and dampens rough ground for comfort; while the ROTO has an effective top speed of 40km/h, something unavailable anywhere else on the market. The exclusive Merlo cab tilting system allows the operator to rotate the cab through 20 degrees, ensuring greater comfort, ergonomics

and safety. Finally, the Eco Power Drive adjusts the engine speed according to operating conditions for a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 18 per cent.

All-in-one joystick with improved ergonomics Intuitive automotive-style controls (backlit keypad, jog-shuttle, levers under steering wheel) Interactive five-inch LCD display Semi-automatic wheel alignment Automatic transmission and parking brake

Full protection for maximum uptime Uptime is key in construction. Bobcat telehandlers have always had an extra tough design and the new R-Series models build on this thanks to protective shielding of all vital components in key areas, and the robust frame and boom for working in all possible environments. The shielded design protects hydraulic and electrical components (including pipes, harness and transmission) and a steel plate protects the base of the machine. All Bobcat telehandlers have a rigid boom structure and a robust frame with box section layout.

Engine designed for easy maintenance All R-Series telehandlers now feature a new engine hood with a steeper profile that increases visibility and reduces blind spots by 15 per cent on the right hand side of the machines. Together with the new dashboard design, this provides unobstructed visibility from the cab, allowing the driver to move around the job site with ease, minimising accidents. Access to the engine compartment has also been improved, enabling easier maintenance. Under the hood, R-Series telehandlers are powered by new upgraded versions of the Bobcat D34 Stage V engine, using DPF after-treatment, which is automatically regenerated with no impact on

performance and no disturbance for operators. The lack of AdBlue in the 75 HP engine and the absence of EGR in the 100 HP engine provide further advantages. Overall, the decreased number of intervals from five to three in these Stage V models allows for easier maintenance and a lower total cost of ownership. The machines are also connected via Bobcat’s new Machine IQ telematics system, further enhancing efficiency. For lesser regulated markets, the proven Perkins Stage IIIA engine provides high power and the simplicity of its mechanical injection system. Unmatched confidence and stability All areas of the R-Series range are designed to inspire full confidence in customers, beginning with the low centre of gravity and well-balanced design of the machines, which also incorporate a heavy counterweight and a long wheelbase. The optimum weight distribution of the new Bobcat telehandlers, with or without the compact stabilisers being deployed, also allows operators to safely reach as high and as far as possible while handling heavy loads with the machines. Quentin D’Hérouël, Product Manager Telehandlers at Doosan Bobcat, said: “As with all new Bobcat telehandlers, the R-Series offers customers peace of mind with a three-year warranty (or 3,000 hours) on the entire machine as standard from the factory. Bobcat is the only manufacturer to provide a three-year warranty as standard, allowing customers to focus on growing their business without worrying about their machines. And with regards to the cab interior, we’re now the leaders in the field. As we have constantly involved our customers in their design, we’re confident that the new generation machines will be very well received in the marketplace.”

Contract Plant Rental supplies second Atlas material handler to Anglian Demolition and Asbestos

58

DIGGERSLIVE

Anglian is a multi-facetted company focused on the construction, demolition and waste recycling sectors. Headquartered in Attleborough, the company mainly operates across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire for a wide range of private and bluechip national companies. Its constantly growing scaffolding, earthworks and asbestos divisions operate alongside the demolition and recycling business, and it is the desire to grow its in-house recycling capabilities that has seen the company expand its facility in Attleborough. Managing Director Lee Storer explained: “We aim to recycle a minimum of 95 per cent of the material our demolition operations produce

www.diggers.live

PURCHASES

on an annual basis. We have done this traditionally on site or by sending material to a variety of recycling companies. As we have steadily built up our own inhouse abilities, we are realising that the careful and selective processing of ferrous and non-ferrous material will in fact increase its value to us, albeit with some considerable investment in upgrading our facilities.” Investment in its in-house recycling operations saw the company replace its old material handler at the end of 2020 with a new 35-tonne Atlas 350MH from Contract Plant Rental. Lee said: “We explored a number of options for a new crane. Stuart Lambert sat down with us and talked us through the details of working with CPR and what they were able to offer

www.diggers.live

us in the way of backup and service. It was refreshing to hear the level of detail Stuart was able to offer us for a single monthly fee for a new and fuel-efficient machine. In the few months since the first Atlas was delivered, we have been very impressed with the machine’s reliability, productivity and definitely the service we have had from CPR to the point at which we contacted them about an additional machine.” Since its arrival, the 350MH has been kept busy loading the large shear to process incoming metals and loading the numerous bulk tippers leaving the yard daily with material. The second machine, a 25-tonne 250MH has been taken to assist in material sorting duties but predominately to load the large, tracked shredder with lightweight material.

Lee said: “Having the ability to shred lighter material allows us to fill outgoing vehicles far more efficiently, resulting in us getting a higher value for each load. The better we can process the material, the more we receive in return.” Both Atlas material handlers have been added to the Anglian fleet on a four-year contract with CPR looking after everything except the jump hoses from dipper to grab. Lee said: “They will even rebuild the tips on the grab within their monthly cost. We will manage any hose repairs on the grab as we have our own facility in house for our demolition equipment. We simply cannot fault either the Atlas product or the service CPR offer. It has certainly made life easier for us.”

Official handover of Thomas Plant Hire’s first TA 230 Dump Truck. Left to right: Daniel Sullivan, Gwyn Thomas and Wyn Thomas of Thomas Plant Hire; Lee Palmer, Richard Gee and Michael Atkinson of Liebherr GB

Working from home The company that placed the UK’s biggest order for Liebherr’s new articulated dump trucks won’t be driving them very far – the vehicles will be working on the expansion of the manufacturer’s UK headquarters. Thomas Plant Hire of North Wales has struck a deal that will see it become one of the country’s biggest users of Liebherr earthmoving equipment. As well as seven of the recently launched TA 230 G8 dump trucks, the 21-millionpound package includes 16 dozers and 17 excavators. Deliveries have started and will continue into next year. The trucks will be employed in muckshifting duties on the 15-acre site of Liebherr GB’s new facility adjoining its existing nine-acre complex in Biggleswade,

Bedfordshire. Work will begin soon following delays caused by Covid-19 and the investment will ensure the company has the resources and capacity to support continued growth in the UK. Family-owned Thomas Plant Hire was founded in 2000 and has a network of five depots in addition to its Caerwys head office. It has run an L 566 XPower wheeled loader in the fleet for some time and Managing Director Wyn Thomas has been impressed. “Our existing loading shovel has been a very reliable tool with backup to match, so at an early stage in our expansion plan for 2021 we sat down with the team from Liebherr to discuss what they were able to do for us. “Where some manufacturers were

saying they had little or no capacity, Liebherr had stock available and capacity in their manufacturing programme to fit in our requirements. The early arrivals on the fleet have been accepted very well by our in-house teams, our clients and our operators and are proving to be the machines we expected them to be. They are all returning excellent fuel figures and are also very reliable, both points being important to our bottom line. “We are very confident in the Liebherr products and that shows, with us being the first company to order them. They look like very well-built trucks and will slot into our operations very well. We look forward to continuing our good relationship with the Liebherr team.”

Reasons to smile with Sandvik QJ241 mobile jaw crusher

Longstanding Sandvik customer Ben Bennett Jr Ltd took delivery of its fifth mobile crushing and screening unit for its Derbyshire quarrying operation in July. The units are used to crush limestone to produce high quality grades of calcium carbonate for a variety of applications. Ben Bennett Jr, a family business founded in 1883, owns and operates a steel rolling mill and a limestone quarry, both of which it acquired in 1935. Its head office is in Rotherham, South Yorkshire while Grange Mill Quarry is situated in Derbyshire. The company employs approximately 45 people at the quarry, working shifts day and night to keep up with demand. Grange Mill Quarry lies in the white peak of Derbyshire, which is composed mostly of several types of limestone deposited during the early Carboniferous Period around 330 million years ago. Limestone, a sedimentary rock formed and accumulated in warm, clear, shallow seas, is composed of the shells of organisms made up of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) that lived in these tropical environments.

High quality product

The Grange Mill deposit lies in the Bee Low Limestones, which have typically thick beds and are of high purity. Very few complete fossils are found in the deposit and there are no mineral veins to contaminate the limestone. This makes the material of high quality and due to its softness and low silica content, it is ideal for grinding to powder and granules for use in a wide variety of products including glass production, animal feeds, rubber, sealants, carpets and adhesives.

62

DIGGERSLIVE

www.diggers.live

PURCHASES

The quarry supplies approximately 50,000 tonnes of material a year to the pharmaceutical industry, which uses the high quality grades of calcium carbonate in the manufacture of dietary supplements, antacid and an ingredient in baking powder and toothpaste. To process the limestone, the raw material is drilled, blasted and processed by Sandvik’s mobile crushing and screening plant. Ben Bennett Jr first invested in a Sandvik unit back in 2013 and it has purchased two screens, two crushers, and a static screen over the years. Its current QJ241 mobile jaw crusher is set at a CSS of 75 mm and crushes the feed material down to 40 mm. This is then fed into a QA331, then a QA140 screen for processing down to 40-20 mm, 20-10 mm and <10 mm. When it needed to upgrade and replace its six-year-old mobile jaw crusher, Ben Bennett Jr didn’t hesitate in contacting Sandvik for the supply of a new unit due to the reliability and aftermarket support provided. Andy Rawson, Director of Ben Bennett Jr said: “With proximity to the

64

DIGGERSLIVE

customer support centre, this was a major gain for the supply of parts and local service whenever required. “The aftermarket support has been very good. People come out whenever we have needed assistance. A lot of the work we can now do ourselves as our operators are familiar with the equipment. That’s one of the reasons we continue to buy Sandvik as you don’t have to start back at square one.”

Durability and maximum uptime

The new QJ241 will come with the added benefit of Sandvik Optitooth™ jaw plates. These are included as standard on all Sandvik Q-Range jaw crushers for extended life, increased throughput and reduced fuel consumption. The new model also comes fitted with Sandvik My Fleet remote monitoring system as standard with seven years’ complimentary data access. Access to a wide range of live machine data will help to minimise operator intervention and enable planning of service and maintenance schedules, thereby maximising uptime and achieving optimum output at all times. These

new features are in addition to the attributes with which the QJ241 has become synonymous – hydraulic drive, enabling the crusher to start under load; hydraulically adjustable jaw setting to maximise output; and jaw level sensor to control the feed rate into the crusher with minimal intervention. The QJ241 is also fitted with the latest emissions-compliant engine, dust suppression spray bars and onboard water pump as standard to minimise dust. These environmental considerations are important factors for Ben Bennett Jr due to its location on the boundary of the Peak District National Park. The company is committed to maintaining and protecting the biodiversity of the area and employs consultants to monitor its impact on the local environment. Sandvik mobile crushers and screens have proven to be the ideal solution for Ben Bennett Jr and its investment and repeat business over the past eight years is testament to this. Sandvik Mobiles looks forward to continuing this business partnership and being the supplier of choice for years to come.

Mecalac unveils major evolutions to MDX site dumper range Following the global success of its MDX range and the recent launch of its 3.5-tonne variant, the 3.5MDX, which has set new standards in terms of safety, comfort, and performance, Mecalac has announced a series of major evolutions to its site dumper portfolio. The first will see all new six-tonne 6MDX and nine-tonne 9MDX models fitted with optional stateof-the-art hydrostatic transmission. The second evolution concerns the availability of a ROPS (Roll-Over Protective Structure) foldable roll bar, making the cabin effectively optional. Hydrostatic transmission for improved comfort and safety Widely used across the construction equipment industry, the adoption

66

DIGGERSLIVE

of hydrostatic transmission replaces mechanical transmission with fixed gear ratios. This ensures easier operation without the need to shift gear, as well as providing the added benefit of responsive dynamic braking. This makes operation easier and safer for both experienced and new operators, meaning the new hydrostatic 6MDX and 9MDX are perfect for both rental fleets and operators that frequently change their equipment. The addition of hydrostatic transmission also guarantees improved operator comfort thanks to smooth and controllable acceleration. Removing the gear stick allows for a more spacious operator environment, while fewer parts means less maintenance and overall, less

wear, directly resulting in a lower total cost of ownership. Both the 6MDX and 9MDX deliver outstanding performance, torque and traction, particularly on steep inclines where gear changes can often result in loss of drive. Enclosed cab or ROPS foldable roll bar Alongside featuring the option of hydrostatic transmission, both new models will be available with the option of either an integrated cab or all-new ROPS foldable roll bar. Setting the standards in site safety and featuring a stylish groundup design, the all-new ROPS models are easy to transport between job sites and allow operators to work in low height areas with ease. The structure is easily foldable,

thanks to a handle and gas strut, which means folding and unfolding the ROPS is safe and requires minimal manual effort. Because the ROPS roll bar has significantly fewer components than a cab, it is an economical choice, but still offers superior operator protection. For additional safety and comfort, the 6MDX and 9MDX can be fitted with the unique isolated MDX cab to minimise vibration and noise, while optional air-conditioning provides outstanding operator comfort in all weather conditions. In order to ensure a higher level of operator protection in any situation, the certified ROPS/FOPS MDX cab has been additionally designed and tested by Mecalac to withstand impacts while loading the dumper skip.

PROJECTS

Liebherr sells 2,000th 34 K fast-erecting crane Liebherr is celebrating the 2,000th 34 K fast-erecting crane to leave the production lines since its launch in 1998. The milestone crane went to a Swiss customer, Mathis Bau AG, and is the company’s sixth Liebherr fasterecting crane. The handover took place at Liebherr-Baumaschinen AG in Reiden, Switzerland. Mathis Bau AG often undertakes work on construction sites in difficult-toreach mountainous areas and company owner Daniel Mathis, who collected his new equipment in person, particularly appreciates the cranes’ reliability. “I need machines that I can trust and that’s why I opt for Liebherr. It’s a quality brand that allows me to offer my customers a firstclass service.”

The crane has already completed its first job, making full use of its four-tonne capacity by lifting stair elements weighing almost 4,000 kg for a building extension in the Swiss municipality of Giswil. This is a typical assignment for the Liebherr 34 K, which is mainly used for residential construction projects. The crane’s flexibility enables it to cover a broad spectrum of scenarios ranging from the construction of family homes and apartment buildings all the way to exclusive villas. It can also be found working on the construction of commercial premises and infrastructure projects. With a hook height of up to 26 metres, it’s suited to projects with a building height of up to approximately 20 metres.

When the crane was first developed, it was ahead of its time and equipped with functions that are still in demand today. Its eleven different hook heights (12.7 to 39 metres) and three different jib lengths (25.5, 30 and 33 metres) give the 34 K great flexibility. They also make it possible to slew over other cranes on site and for the crane to be used close to adjacent buildings. The crane’s frequency converter technology enables sensitive, precise operation. Assembly engineers are happy too, as jib assembly takes place high above ground, meaning it can be unfolded over the top of potential obstacles. Because the crane is extremely compact, it can be used on space-restricted construction sites and if things get too tight, the jib can be dismantled to address this.

PROJECTS A Liebherr 34 K removes the roof of a lifting platform structure on the tallest building in the Benelux region.

Liebherr 34 K works on talle building in Benelux region A Liebherr 34 K fast-erecting crane has been in operation at the top of one of the tallest residential towers in Europe this summer. The 34 K’s job was to dismantle part of the lifting platform that had been used during the construction of the tallest of the three towers making up the De Zalmhaven development project along the river Maas in Rotterdam. The building, Zalmhaven I, is 215 metres high and the Liebherr was working at 190 metres above the port city. Designed by architectural firms Dam & Partners and KAAN Architects, the project encompasses 452 apartments and penthouses, 33 town houses, a multistorey car park, offices, commercial space, a roof garden and a restaurant with views of the Rotterdam skyline. The

development is scheduled for completion in 2022. The lifting platform had extended upwards level by level along with the tower, making a moving workshop in which engineers were able to work as they would on the ground, avoiding the need for a tower crane. Preparation using 3D simulation With the time come to dismantle the lifting platform’s roof, the customer, Civiele Technieken DeBoer, was looking for a suitable crane. The challenge was to achieve the longest possible reach within the most compact dimensions in order to allow assembly in a confined space. The crane needed to fit inside the lifting platform structure and the space between the platform base and the gantry

crane was extremely tight. Engineers used a 3D simulation to calculate how this could be achieved and which parameters needed adjusting. The solution was the 34 K. Crane rental company Van der Spek Vianen recommended the fast-erecting crane to CT De Boer as an efficient and straightforward solution.

Automatic unfolding of the crane The following day, the ballast was mounted and the crane unfolded itself above the rooftops of Rotterdam. Its dimensions meant the crane fitted perfectly through the gap in the roof of

the lifting platform and the Liebherr 34 K, including jib, was able to protrude above the roof. When the assignment was completed in mid-July, the gantry crane returned the 34 K crane to the ground.

Logistical challenge Measuring 3.5 metres in height when folded, the crane was small enough to fit into the platform structure. And with a jib length of 30 metres, it was large enough to be able to dismantle the roof without time-consuming relocations, meaning alternative lifting solutions could be discarded. Assembly went smoothly thanks to extensive preparations. Firstly, a gantry crane capable of lifting up to 23 tonnes hoisted 17,000 kg of ballast. This material was followed by the Liebherr 34 K, weighing in at 15 tonnes.

Doosan DX235LCR-5 excavator repairs Spain’s Ebro Delta The impact of Storm Gloria in January 2020 left visible damage to the Trabucador Bar on the coast of the Tarragona province in Catalonia in north-eastern Spain. The storm’s 200 litre per square metre rainfall and 60 mph winds combined to cause havoc throughout the area, including the Trabucador Bar, a four mile isthmus that connects the Ebro Delta with the Punta de la Banya Peninsula. The damage to the Trabucador Bar resulted in the sea invading some 300 hectares of the surrounding rice fields and the weakening of the local ecosystem. In fact, the Trabucador Bar suffered several breaches due to weather conditions throughout 2020, but the structure has now been repaired using a Doosan DX235LCR-5 24-tonne reduced radius excavator supplied by Maquinza, a machinery rental and sales company. Maquinza provides comprehensive solutions for the construction, public works, industry and agriculture sectors, among others, with the support of Centrocar, the exclusive importer for the Doosan range for Spain, Portugal, Angola and Mozambique. The work on the Trabucador Bar has involved large movements of sand from other areas or from the seabed itself to protect an area of 2,500 hectares by preventing sea water from entering crop plantations and other areas such as salt flats. In the first stage of the works, the causeway was strengthened to be able to access the Punta de la Banya and after that, the sand was replaced to complete the restoration of the Trabucador Bar, an intense contract carried out under extreme conditions. According to the contractor carrying out the works, extracting sand from the seabed to rebuild the natural barrier required heavy machinery such as the Doosan DX235LCR-5, allowing the movement of thousands of cubic metres of sand to re-form the sand barrier in the shortest time possible.

Traction, agility, durability, power The Doosan DX235LCR-5 excavator was highly appropriate for this task because it is a crawler machine, providing greater traction and manoeuvrability on an area flooded by sea water. This superior traction also meant a greater load capacity and a shorter execution time for the work. The reduced radius 24-tonne DX235LCR-5 is the most powerful excavator in this range on the market, offering superior pulling force, swing force and digging force. Its low overhang swing makes this excavator highly agile and it can move around 380 tonnes of sand every hour. It is a very fast machine with very short cycle times. The DX235LCR-5’s undercarriage can handle extreme applications such as working in seawater thanks to forged steel rollers and grease-lubricated track chains, allowing for increased longevity. In addition, the chain is made up of sealed and self-lubricating links for long life. The Doosan DX235LCR-5 excavator offers high bucket and arm digging

forces along with high productivity. It features reinforced castings, forged steel hinge points and a heavy-duty reinforced boom and arm to withstand the effects of working with high-impact materials. Other features include heavy-duty oversized boom and arm cylinders to ensure power and fluidity; advanced pin and bushing technology and two-piece boom and dozer blade configurations that are perfect for special applications. Doosan excavators are recognised for their robustness and reliability, characteristics that are necessary for jobs like this one in the Ebro Delta. The Doosan DL06P engine in the DX235LCR-5 is exceptionally powerful and reliable, with high torque at low revs, increased fuel efficiency and no need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and the associated regeneration system. Thanks to the SPC (Smart Power Control) system, combined with programmable engine shutdown and automatic idle settings, the DX235LCR-5 offers additional fuel savings of up to five per cent.
