EDITORIAL TEAM
WELCOME
Ben Chambers ben@chambers.media
Putting together this, the remaining issue of Diggers LIVE in 2020 I want to be able to have a positive think back on the year we have had and contextualise cathartically here. To get to this stage where we are proudly an established, leading construction equipment magazine, respected and generously supported whilst fulfilling the bi-monthly reading requirements of our audience after having to rise from the ashes from a presumably now defunct precursor to DL is astonishing. Rise we did, we had little choice. We had made obligations with advertisers and readers promised at the end of 2019 to at all costs produce quality content housed in a great looking magazine to showcase your brands and benefit the construction equipment community.
Toby Wilsdon toby@chambers.media CONTRIBUTOR Tara Craig
This now clearly completed whilst avoiding the new deadly C-word leaves my team and I with an extremely satisfied feeling on just what we have achieved and been able to achieve our way.
DESIGNER Nicki Chambers nic@chambers.media
This magazine for the construction equipment industry is for you. We have been guided by those within it, the long standing giants of construction as well as the innovators and disrupters.

Yes we are still evolving and continue to welcome that industry support and guidance as it is your magazine. So as you’ve supported us, we continue to do so more with you. We want more of your news, your views, and your video. Let us know of your product launches and trust us the ability to seek out interesting case studies and conduct high profile interviews on your behalf. Speaking of interviews, in this very issue we have been talking to Rupert Craven, UK and Ireland Sales Director from Ritchie Bros. Beginning on page 4 Rupert details where Ritchie Bros came from, how they have coped with this year and their plans for the future. Equipment-wise we cover Doosan’s new DL-7 Wheel Loader range from page 20 and Wacker Newson and Hyundai Construction Equipment join the new wheel loading party with the launch of the WL28 and HL975A CVT Wheel Loaders respectively. I have barely scratched the surface of what’s within this 60+ page plant monster, but someone has just opened a bottle of bubbly.

INTERVIEW
SILVER LININGS
UK and Ireland sales director Rupert Craven joined Ritchie Bros. in 2009. He tells Toby Wilsdon how the company has developed, how it is coping with 2020 and what lies ahead. Rupert Craven: Ritchie Bros.
has had a presence in the UK since the early 1980s, although we didn’t open our first permanent auction site here until 2012, at Donington Park. I’ve seen real change since I joined. In those days, we didn’t have any auctions in the UK at all, exporting everything to Holland and further afield. We’ve been keen members of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC) for the last eight years, however, and two years ago we moved to a new auction site at the former Maltby Colliery, South Yorkshire. Auctions are already underway there, with our new permanent structure, including our UK head office, due for completion by the end of Q1 2021. The Donington site had 10 acres of selling space. At Maltby Colliery we have 30. It’s a really good location, between the M18 and A1 (M) roads. Overseas investment was among the reasons we chose South Yorkshire. We have done a lot of work on our new auction theatre, which is nearly finished. The rest of the site will be taken up by offices, workshops, an auction ramp and an open display yard. We’re going to have a
4
DIGGERSLIVE
great auction site with space for buyers to really see all of the machines. We have 25 to 30 staff on site, including several local people. We’ve just taken on four sales staff.
Q A
: How has 2020 been for Ritchie Bros.?
: The UK has the highest saturation of rental machinery of any country, with most construction machines sold here going to rental type outfits. It’s a numbers game – we know that if it’s rented out for X amount for three years, it’s worth Y when it’s sold. It’s different with demolition machines. Basic machines can be rented, but the spec complexity and harsh environment mean that on the whole demolition contractors have to own their machinery. When it comes to quarrying, road building and so on, in the UK everything is rented. We love change, and this year has been pretty good for us because of it. Where Ritchie Bros. is concerned, there has been much positive change, including HS2, house building and planning, the work of Highways
England, and the admissions on machines. Changes like these prompt companies to change machines, whether they want better transmission machines for city centre projects or are growing their fleet to meet HS2’s demands. Our main contracts reach us in a range of ways, often without machinery and requiring subcontractors. For a start, there are the enabling works, such as tree surgeons needing machinery to move lumber and chippings. Then there are the demolition contractors, who come to us because they need the best kit, and they know we’re buying new machines with the right permissions. And then there are the real earthmoving works, such as HS2. These call for a lot of brandnew kit, including bespoke pieces such as tunnel boring machines. I think we will see more people buying assets for a specific job. Of course, if people are buying kit for a particular job, they will sell it afterwards. That’s where we come in. Most machinery in the UK is sold abroad. Customers are happy to have us sell their kit because of complications such as exchange rates.

INTERVIEW
Q A
: How has business been in 2020?
: Our two auctions this year, in June and September, were considerably bigger than anything we’ve had for a long, long time. They were basically £17m auctions. With Coronavirus, of course, we’ve had to change how we work. We now rely on an online timed auction system, which is working very well. People are increasingly confident about buying online, so we have seen money coming in quickly. We’ve also seen that the pandemic hasn’t affected people’s need to change machinery. We have addressed travel restrictions and clients’ reluctance to travel by making it as easy as possible to buy machinery online, providing really good photos and detailed information. Clients can still check machinery in person or appoint someone to look at it on their behalf. We can even make videos of machinery for potential clients. We’ve built up a good reputation in the UK, selling machines between six and eight times a year for the last decade, and twothirds of our business comes from repeat customers. We work with customers to make sure they are happy. If they aren’t, we will resell the machinery. It’s quite straightforward. Not only do we sell brand new equipment, but we also deal in classic pieces. For example, we wrote a Facebook post about a Guy Pioneer, a very old concrete mixing truck. Someone mentioned it to a friend who bought it and is restoring it. And we don’t just sell plant. We deal in anything to do with construction, transport or agriculture. There are four key parts to our business. The first involves providing potential buyers with valuations, market information, and advice on buying machinery. The second involves liaising with potential sellers. The third is the auction itself, and the final element is selling assets for customers. In the UK we have four territory managers who look after customers on the seller side, sorting the machinery and advising people how to sell it. Our customer service manager takes care of the buyers and bidders. With the majority of machines in our auctions, we have discussed the value with the owner. I wouldn’t want people going to auction unprepared in terms of what they plan to spend – that would just be painful for both parties after the auction. Giving customers good advice helps ensure repeat business.
www.diggers.live
We also have a sales platform called Marketplace, where we sell assets for customers, without them having to go to auction or send their assets to us. This has worked very well with larger assets such as demolition rigs, crushers, cranes, and mining equipment.
Q A
: How has selling online changed how you work?
: With more sales taking place online, we make sure that machines are clean and nicely presented when we photograph them. It is important that overseas buyers know that those assets are in our yard, not the owner’s. In the past, buyers might stay in the marquee without really looking at the machines. Now, however, we take up to 70 photos of each machine. We clean them, balance them, and repaint them if necessary. We want those machines to look as good as possible because doing everything online really makes people look a lot more closely.
Q A
: Is the live auction a thing of the past?
: Only about 25% of our clients actually attended live auctions. If we got 250 people on site we’d be doing well, and I don’t think many of them were serious buyers. You really need to be switched on to buy a machine. Most buyers would rather be at their computer, with the necessary information, concentrating on picking the right plant. Live auctions are a good way of getting people together with our team, so will continue to run them, when lockdown permits. We like to run a big auction where we see interesting assets
being sold and as a live event, there is more pressure to sell the items involved than there would be online.
Q
: Lockdown has led companies to look at how well-utilised their assets are. What does that mean for you?
A
: Many companies panicked at first, believing they would have cut their fleet and workforce. We did what we could to help, talking them through the value of their assets on the UK market. Now that the situation has calmed down somewhat, it’s more a case of people not being able to get hold of machinery. The construction industry is very, very healthy. The most desirable assets at auction are mini diggers, small dumpers and rollers, equipment probably destined for house extension work. But we also sold a fleet of 1,050 ton build trucks, which are quite rare, and too big for most construction sites. Two went to Holland and the others to France. Having laid off staff, manufacturers are making less. With fewer machines available, it’s especially important to prevent buyers from purchasing stolen goods. We have a good understanding of sellers, so we know where the machines are coming from. We check everything that comes through. We look at a lot of machinery, so we know if something is wrong. We also ask our buyers to do their own due diligence. Being a well-known company helps – if you are trying to steal a machine to sell, the last thing you need to do is put it through our brochures! This is all part of our consultancy approach. By talking to our customers, we ensure that they get what they need from us – and come back for more.

CORPORATE
MARTIN LEHNER TO LEAVE WACKER NEUSON GROUP Martin Lehner, Chairman of the Executive Board, CEO and CTO of Wacker Neuson SE, informed the Supervisory Board, that he would not be extending his contract with the company in November. Hans Neunteufel, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, said: “The Supervisory Board of Wacker Neuson SE regrets Mr Lehner’s decision and thanks him for his unwavering personal commitment. During his many years of successful work on the Executive Board, he has helped drive forward the group’s internationalisation and opened up new growth areas while continuously developing the corporate strategy together with the entire Executive Board. “With the departure of Martin Lehner, Wacker Neuson Group is losing a valued CEO, who has shaped the company with his commitment, expertise and innovative drive. We wish Mr Lehner all the best for the future.” Lehner will continue to be available to the group in an advisory capacity until March 2021, in order to ensure a smooth transition. Martin Lehner has worked for the group and its predecessor companies since 1987. During his more than 30-year career with the company, he has held various management positions and played a decisive role in successfully developing individual entities and merging them into a listed, global corporation. Prior to the merger of Wacker Construction Equipment AG and Neuson Kramer Baumaschinen AG in 2007, Lehner restructured the Kramer Group and was responsible for completely realigning it. In 2004, he became a member of the Executive Board of Neuson Kramer Baumaschinen AG. Following the merger, he was appointed to the Executive Board of the newly created Wacker Neuson SE and became Chair in 2017. As an innovation driver and technology expert, Lehner has played a
6
DIGGERSLIVE
key role in shaping the company. In 2014, Wacker Neuson launched its first fully electric light equipment product. This battery-powered rammer marked a step into unknown territory – not just for the group, but for the industry as a whole. The group’s zero emission product portfolio has expanded in recent years to include a wide range of products including vibratory plates, wheel loaders, dumpers and the first fully electric mini excavator, which was launched in 2020. Neunteufel said: “Martin Lehner’s outstanding technical knowledge, his keen instinct for innovation and his passion for construction equipment has helped make Wacker Neuson the technology leader it is today in the field of electric light and compact equipment. Through his huge personal involvement in developing digital business models plus a wide range of further initiatives, Lehner has laid the foundation for the Wacker Neuson Group’s transition from a production-focused organisation to a software-oriented company. This has put our group on a very strong footing to face the challenges of the coming years.” After reporting average growth rates of 11 per cent over the course of the last ten years, the Wacker Neuson Group clearly deviated from its growth path in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. By developing a new streamlined and agile management and organisational culture, Lehner has now helped make the group even more robust and successful in the long term. “I have spent many successful years at the Wacker Neuson Group. During this time, the organisation has grown to become a leading manufacturer of light and compact equipment. Now, the time has come for me to focus on new tasks and challenges,” explained Lehner. “I am extremely grateful that I have been able to help the Wacker Neuson Group on its path to becoming
an internationally successful group and technology leader. My special thanks go to the many colleagues who, with their passionate commitment and high level of identification with our company, have made my time at Wacker Neuson very valuable to me. I have always been passionate about areas of future significance such as zero emission construction equipment and digitalisation and am particularly proud of the innovative drive that our group has shown in these fields. I am sure that the team will continue to live this spirit in the future and wish them, as well as the entire group, every success. Last but not least, I would like to thank all our customers and business partners for their loyalty and trust. I am convinced that they will continue to be in good hands with Wacker Neuson also in the future.” As of 1 January 2021, Kurt Helletzgruber (68), who has been seconded from the Supervisory Board to the Executive Board until 30 June 2021, will temporarily assume the executive responsibilities of the position of CEO and take on the position of Chairman of the Executive Board. Helletzgruber has been a member of the Supervisory Board since 2007 and held the position of CFO and CSO at Neuson Kramer Baumaschinen AG prior to the merger with Wacker Construction Equipment AG. Dr Matthias Schüppen takes over as Chairman of the Audit Committee of the Supervisory Board of Wacker Neuson SE, which had been held by Helletzgruber since 2010.

CORPORATE
PANDEMIC CONTINUES TO HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON WACKER NEUSON • Revenue for the third quarter 16.5 per cent below previous year • EBIT margin at 5.8 per cent (down three percentage points) • Free cash flow at 86.5 million euros, driven by reduction in net working capital • Further significant reduction in net financial debt, gearing at 22 per cent • Group expects to achieve Strategy 2022 goals one to two years later than planned The Wacker Neuson Group continued to feel the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic in the third quarter of 2020. The group reported revenue of 390.8 million euros, a decrease of 16.5 per cent relative to the previous year. Revenue for the first nine months of the year amounted to 1,187.5 million euros, a drop of 16.4 per cent. Martin Lehner, CEO of the Wacker Neuson Group, said: “We again experienced a significant decline in revenue in the third quarter related to the coronavirus pandemic, albeit less pronounced than in the second quarter. However, we are also seeing positive changes in our industry that have been triggered or accelerated by the shift in circumstances. Through the crisis, our customers have become much more open to the possibilities of digitalisation and electromobility in particular.”
Europe
Quarter three revenue in Europe – the largest region for the Wacker Neuson Group – was 8.2 per cent down year-onyear at 310 million euros. Whereas many countries outside central Europe reported double-digit downturns in revenue, the UK improved its performance markedly,
8
DIGGERSLIVE
primarily fuelled by continued strong demand for Dual View dumpers. Revenue generated by the group’s Weidemann and Kramer-branded equipment for the agricultural sector declined by a total of 12.2 per cent to 63.9 million euros.
The Americas
Revenue in the Americas decreased by 43 per cent, (38.8 per cent when adjusted for currency fluctuations). Willingness to invest remained extremely low among dealers, key accounts and rental chains in the region. Although the US production plant had remained largely closed since April, the first production lines started to gradually ramp up towards the end of the third quarter.
Asia Pacific
In the third quarter, Wacker Neuson experienced slight growth in the Asia Pacific region for the first time since the start of the year. The group reported a significant double-digit revenue upturn in China as well as gains in Australia, despite challenging conditions there. In contrast, revenue in Southeast Asia halved due to the severe impact of the coronavirus crisis. Revenue for Asia-
Pacific as a whole amounted to 14.9 million euros.
Profitability impacted by sales
Profit before interest and tax (EBIT) for the third quarter amounted to 22.8 million euros, with margins settling at 5.8 per cent. Profit was primarily impacted by the sharp downturn in sales volumes, which, in conjunction with the further reduction of inventory, resulted

work models in the third quarter, albeit to a lesser extent than in the second quarter. Viewed over the first nine months of the year, EBIT amounted to 73.2 million euros, corresponding to a margin of 6.2 per cent. This includes a goodwill impairment of around nine million euros attributed to the US subgroup.
Net working capital reduced
in much lower capacity utilisation at production plants than in the previous year. Bad debt allowances in the amount of 7.5 million euros also had a negative impact. In contrast, the group benefited from a lower cost base relative to the previous year as well as from growth in the services segment, which had a positive impact on the product mix. The group continued to utilise various short-time
www.diggers.live
The Wacker Neuson Group continued to reduce net working capital in the third quarter. Inventory downsizing had the largest impact here as the group was able to further reduce levels, despite the decline in sales volumes. As such, inventory was already significantly below the year-end goal of 500 million euros by September 30. Reflecting declining sales volumes, trade receivables were also significantly lower than figures for the previous quarters and the prior year. Net working capital amounted to 636.3 million euros, a reduction of 14.4 per cent relative to the close of Q2/20 and 29.2 per cent year-on-year. Free cash flow for the third quarter amounted to 86.5 million euros. In the previous year, a sharp rise in net working capital resulted in negative free cash flow both for Q3 and for the nine-month period. Free cash flow for the first nine months of 2020 amounted to 179.4 million euros. As a result, net financial debt declined markedly again, amounting to 276.1 million euros at the close of the third quarter.
Continuing uncertainty
Infection rates are on the rise again, leading to a tightening of government restrictions. As it is impossible to
predict the effects these will have on public life, general economic activity and the business development of the Wacker Neuson Group, it is not possible to quantify the outlook published in August. According to that outlook, the Executive Board expects revenue and the EBIT margin for the full year 2020 to be considerably lower than the previous year. Furthermore, the Executive Board now expects net working capital to decrease further by the close of the year, albeit at a slower pace than in the previous months. Investments for the year as a whole are expected to remain unchanged at around 80 million euros.
Strategy 2022 goals delayed
After reporting double-digit growth rates for fiscal years 2017, 2018 and 2019, the group has clearly deviated from its growth path in 2020. The Executive Board expects the coronavirus pandemic to continue to have a major impact into fiscal year 2021. In light of this, the group expects to achieve its medium-term goals set out in March 2018 one to two years later than planned. In its Strategy 2022, the group aimed to achieve revenue in excess of two billion euros and an EBIT margin of more than 11 per cent. It also planned to gradually bring net working capital down to below 30 per cent of revenue. Lehner said: “We have worked hard on consistently implementing our Strategy 2022 in recent years to ensure that our group is focused 100 per cent on our customers’ needs. We have already made substantial progress in each of the initiative’s three strategic areas – focus, acceleration and excellence – and are today much more efficient, innovative and above all, closer to our customers than we were at the start of 2018. “Together with our colleagues, we will remain committed to our current path. The long-term trend towards compact equipment in the construction and agricultural sectors is unchanged and offers major opportunities for our group. Eco-friendly solutions and alternative drives are becoming increasingly important to our customers. “As an innovation driver, we believe that we are ideally positioned to actively shape the key trends in our industries and create long-term value for our customers as well as our shareholders. The goals that we set out for the group in 2018 remain our benchmark. Based on the information currently available, however, we no longer expect to achieve all of these by fiscal 2022.”

GOLDHOFER WINS GLOBAL MARKET LEADER ACCOLADE AGAIN For the fourth time experts from the University of St. Gallen and the Academy of German Global Market Leaders (Schwäbisch-Hall) have confirmed the leading role played by Goldhofer AG in the field of heavy haulage and oversized cargo transportation vehicles. The Memmingen-based company, which is present on six continents, has once again received the coveted award. Lothar Holder, CEO at Goldhofer AG said: “We are absolutely delighted with this distinction, especially as it reflects the worldwide customer satisfaction deriving from the know-how, experience and above all enthusiastic commitment of our employees. That is the key to market leadership. My thanks and those of my colleagues go to all Goldhofer employees around the world.”
Leader Index, Goldhofer AG is wholly owned by the Memmingen-based Alois Goldhofer Foundation. Summa com laude
This year Goldhofer again made its mark by outperforming the relevant criteria in the field of heavy haulage and oversized cargo transportation vehicles. In 2019, Goldhofer’s 751 employees generated net sales worth over 213 million euros, with exports accounting for 83 per cent of the total, a reflection of the fact that the company, founded in 1705, is present with its products on all six continents of the world. YANMAR DELIVERS RESULTS FOR FOURTHGENERATION BUILDING SERVICES FIRM When it came to replacing its well-worn micro excavator, Holmfirth Building Services purchased a Yanmar ViO266 from local dealer MTS Plant. Since taking delivery of the new model, the fourth-generation firm has been delighted with the zero tail swing model’s impressive power, performance and stability.
Specifying the perfect solution
Established in 1921, Holmfirth Building Services is a multi-trade building contractor covering West Yorkshire and the surrounding areas. With a pedigree spanning almost a century, the team has significant experience across a wide range
12
DIGGERSLIVE
of complex tasks including stonemasonry, dry stone walling and bespoke joinery. Rather than relying on third parties to support with specialist tasks, Holmfirth Building Services prides itself on having a dedicated team of hand-picked experts, each of whom specialise in a different trade. This not only keeps the client’s project under one roof, but also prevents unnecessary site delays. For almost every job, having a capable excavator on hand to support with digging, earthmoving and heavy lifting tasks (such as excavating foundations, dry stone walling and dumper loading) is hugely important. Over the past few years, the team has relied on a second
hand JCB micro excavator to do just that. However, with such frequent use, as well as being responsible for most heavy site tasks, the unit was well worn and really showing its age. After reading about Yanmar’s class-leading range online, Holmforth’s owner, Alex Simpson, contacted MTS Plant, Yanmar’s approved dealer for Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire and the central belt of Scotland (Glasgow/Edinburgh), to see if the time was right to invest in a state-of-the-art new replacement. Following a visit to MTS and an introduction to each of Yanmar’s mini excavator models, Alex decided that the ViO26-6 was the ideal solution for
www.diggers.live
PURCHASES
Holmfirth Building Services’ needs and put in an order shortly afterwards. Powerful, durable and comfortable, the ViO26-6 is perfectly suited to daily site operations. Thanks to Yanmar’s unique zero tail swing design, the model performs in even the tightest spaces, while its compact dimensions allow easy transportation on a trailer, even with accessories. A flow sharing hydraulics system ensures smooth control, while a large operator station with state-of-the-art instrumentation and ergonomic design makes the mini excavator comfortable and productive for the operator. For Holmfirth Building Services, the ViO26-6 offered the complete package. While minimal customisation was required, Alex specified three bucket variations and a hydraulic quick hitch to ensure attachment changes could be undertaken from within the cab.
Delivering impressive results
Since taking delivery of the ViO26, Alex has been hugely impressed with the compact model. He said: “Moving from a second hand JCB to the ViO26-6 has really been an eye-opener. Straightaway, we realised the dramatic increase in power, as well as the improved stability – even on rough and loose terrains. “While many professionals grow up thinking that JCB is the best choice for excavators, I’d advise them to think again. The ViO26-6 looks smarter and more modern than other models in its class, it’s smooth and simple to operate, it’s designed to last and, best of all, it’s really easy to tow on a trailer. “The Yanmar full protect package has proven particularly beneficial as in the past, our excavator cylinders have been damaged by large pieces of stone. With heavy-duty cylinder guards, there’s no risk of that with the ViO26-6.” Matt Watson, Director at MTS Plant, said: “We’re pleased to hear such positive feedback from Alex and the Holmfirth Building Services team. From initial introduction through to purchase and aftersales, we worked in close partnership to deliver the best possible plant solution. “For such a compact model, the ViO26-6 really does punch above its weight for power and performance. We’re confident that Alex will enjoy his new excavator for years to come.” Alex said: “In my experience, if you do a good job, people tend to have you back. The ViO26-6 will help us to continue delivering excellent projects for our customers across West Yorkshire.”

F M ARBLASTER & SON TAKES DELIVERY OF FIRST STAGE V YANMAR SV60 F M Arblaster and Son has taken delivery of the very first Stage V-compliant Yanmar SV60 sold in the UK. Retailed through Mawsley Machinery in Brixworth, Yanmar’s official dealer for south central England, the new model will be used for a wide range of agricultural contracting applications. The perfect combination of technology and innovation, the SV60 is renowned for its compact working envelope, exceptional performance and “business class” operator experience. The latest marque, fitted with Yanmar’s 33.4kW Stage V-compliant 4TNV84TZMBVA engine, guarantees minimal emissions and low fuel consumption. Additional features, such as Auto-Deceleration (enabling the engine to idle if operating levers aren’t touched) and Eco Mode (which reduces motor speed to 300rpm), make the SV60 one of Yanmar’s most eco-friendly models ever. George Arblaster, owner of F M Arblaster and Son said: “When it came to expanding our agricultural contracting business with the addition of a new excavator, we originally visited Mawsley Machinery to look at a second-hand model from another manufacturer. However, when we spotted the all new SV60, we knew it was the perfect machine for us.” Offering the performance of a midi-excavator with the
space-saving benefits of a more compact model, the SV60 delivers impressive lifting capacities and unmatched stability. Featuring Yanmar’s state-of-the-art ViPPS hydraulic system, operators benefit from precise control and powerful digging forces – 24.8kN on the arm and 41.9kN on the bucket. George said: “Since taking delivery of the new model, we’ve been hugely impressed with its performance, comfort and capability. The smooth hydraulics and powerful performance maximise operator productivity, while the Stage V-compliant engine minimises fuel consumption.” Leon Geoghegan, Area Sales Manager for Mawsley Machinery, said: “When George visited our site in Brixworth and explained his requirements, we knew Yanmar’s SV60 would prove the perfect fit. We arranged a site demonstration with one of Yanmar’s fleet of demo machines and it wasn’t long before George was convinced the SV60 was the perfect excavator for him. After taking into consideration the wide range of contracting activities the model would be used for, we put together a package of extras, including rotation lines for hedge trimming and flailing work. “Initial feedback has been hugely positive and we’re glad the SV60 has made an immediate business impact.”

productivity due to improved stability when the wheel loader is moving. The lift arm is cushioned by a hydro-pneumatic accumulator linked to the lift hydraulic system, acting as a shock absorber. The benefits include reduced cycle times, higher performance and better fuel efficiency while carrying out load and carry applications. With automatic five-speed powershift transmission, heavy duty HDL axles as standard and enhanced traction with Differential Hydraulic Lock (DHL), the DL-7 wheel loaders operate exceptionally, especially in high-load environments. The differential hydraulic 100 per cent lock can be engaged at full torque automatically without any action from the operator. Optional independent oil cooler circuits for the front and rear axle ensure low oil temperatures, provide oil filtration and extend the lifetime of axle components, especially for demanding applications, such as long distance load and carry in high ambient temperature conditions. Improvements have been made throughout the powertrain, to provide operators with best-in-class driveability and faster driving, reaching the 40 km/h maximum speed quickly and safely.
Three-year/5,000 hour warranty as standard
The upgraded hydraulic system and major parts ensure greatly improved durability and maintainability. Providing increased peace of mind for the customer, the high reliability and quality of the new DL-7 wheel loaders are backed up by a standard full three-year/5,000 hour warranty.
Increased fuel efficiency
With power provided by new Doosan and Scania Stage V 6-cylinder engines, the DL-7 wheel loaders provide up to five per cent greater fuel efficiency than the previous generation machines, while delivering impressive output and torque. The new engines meet Stage V emission regulations without the need for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), through the use of selective catalyst reduction, diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter (DPF) after-treatment technologies. The soot cleaning cycle on the DPF has been improved to over 6,000h and the operator is fully informed about the status of the DPF via a soot
level indicator on the new touchscreen display in the cab. With no EGR needed and a new selection of power modes available, Standard, SAT2, and Power, the new generation Situation Awareness Technology (SAT2) power management system automatically scans the machine’s activity and adjusts the engine’s output according to real time analysis of the boom pressure, pump pressure and output shaft. The Doosan Smart Guidance System (DSGS) is a new feature that analyses the driving habits and behaviour of the operator and helps them to achieve the most fuel-efficient operation. The DSGS provides a score and guide (the ScoreGraph) of the operator’s driving pattern to show fuel economy, efficiency and durability by category.
DoosanCONNECT fleet management system as standard
The DL-7 wheel loaders are factory-installed with the latest DoosanCONNECT TMS2.0 stateof-art wireless fleet monitoring system. The DoosanCONNECT system is a tool designed specifically for the Doosan range, providing comprehensive information about machine performance in a dual mode (satellite, mobile network). The DoosanCONNECT system offers a web-based fleet and asset management solution that is very useful for managing the performance and security of machines and promoting preventative maintenance.

EFFICIENT AND PRODUCTIVE IN NARROW SPACES Telehandler TH412 and wheel loader WL28 by Wacker Neuson. Wacker Neuson impresses with compact yet powerful machines in a wide range of applications. Whether for gardening and landscaping, building and civil engineering or in municipalities – with the telehandlers and wheel loaders, material can be efficiently transported, lifted and loaded. With both new machines, the telehandler TH412 and the wheel loader WL28, Wacker Neuson brings two optimised all-rounders to the market. The tried and tested but now completely reworked telehandler TH412, with 1.25 tonne payload and
24

four-metre stacking height is the most compact model by Wacker Neuson in the telehandler range. The combination of compact dimensions and efficient output makes it ideal for demanding tasks. The new wheel loader WL28 is impressive as a flexibly deployable transport helper with a high tipping load and even more comfort and safety. Both machines have Stage V-compliant engines as standard. With more powerful engine options, they are optimally suitable for pro applications taking many operating hours, scoring points with the most modern technology onboard.
Comfortable cabin – optimal all-round visibility From the first glance, the new design of both machines catches the eye. Here, form follows function as great importance was placed on making operation as pleasant and easy as possible. For this reason, cabins have been generously designed for comfort while at the same time maintaining the compact dimensions. The operator’s controls are clearly and ergonomically arranged to allow particularly efficient and fatigue-free work. On the telehandler TH412, features such as the armrest

with integrated stowage compartment, sun blind and optimised heater and ventilation make working even more comfortable. The cabin’s modern fourcolumn design and panoramic rear window in the wheel loader WL28 likewise provide an optimised view. Moreover, the cabin is designed to reduce vibrations and noise, which ensures more operating comfort and makes the operator’s work easier. Various drive modes for high economic efficiency Great importance was placed on efficiency and flexibility in reworking both the TH412 and WL28 models. These, among other things, are ensured by the
electronically regulated drive system with various drive modes. Auto and ECO mode are standard. The auto mode provides the usual 100 per cent performance of the machine. In ECO mode, the engine speed is reduced when the travel speed set in advance by the operator is reached, raising the operator’s comfort level. This also saves fuel and minimises noise, resulting in lower maintenance costs and less disturbance for persons in the area. A further optional drive mode can be selected. In attachment mode, the machine keeps the hydraulic flow volume on the attachment constant – even with changing loads. The speed of the attachment remains constant, which makes the sequence of operations smoother and increases safety. This is particularly advantageous when working with mulchers or snow blowers. In the M-drive mode, engine speed can be set with the manual throttle and travel speed regulated with the gas pedal. Thus, it is ideally suited for performing Y-loading
www.diggers.live
cycles. Also, both machines score points with an electric parking brake with hill-hold function. The machine comes to a standstill if the operator’s seat is vacated, the machine is idle, or the travel direction is put in neutral. This way, the wheel loader cannot roll away, making the entire construction site environment even safer. TH412: Vertical Lift System for higher productivity and safety Like all telehandlers by Wacker Neuson, the TH412 model is equipped with the innovative Vertical Lift System (VLS) operator assistance system. The system prevents the machine from tipping over in the longitudinal direction due to overload, without affecting the operating speed. Where other systems interrupt the working cycle by switching off the hydraulic function, VLS allows for safe and smooth sequences of operations even under high payloads. This is made possible through a uniform and rapid lifting and lowering of the telescopic arm at
the same time as a partial automation of the telescopic movement. This function ensures not only more safety on the construction site, but also more efficiency. VLS also makes working easier, faster and more comfortable. WL28: Particularly safe – particularly stable The one-tonne wheel loader WL28 combines compact dimensions and manoeuvrability with high performance. The low front carriage and the wellbalanced weight of the machine allow a high tipping load of 1.6 tonnes with pallet fork (machine straight). Thus, even transporting a pallet with sett paving is no problem. The wheel loader is outfitted with a tiltable operator’s cab or a tiltable cabin. This allows easy access to the engine, hydraulic system and electronics. This makes inspection and maintenance of the machine very easy. The engine hood can be opened widely, thereby allowing for optimal access.

NEW GENERATION ROTARY TELEHANDLER RANGE Bobcat introduces the latest product expansion from its Next is Now campaign
Inspired by the company’s Next is Now philosophy, Bobcat has announced a major new development from the company in the telehandler market. Bobcat has collaborated with Magni TH of Italy to launch an expanded line of new generation rotary telehandlers for markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and Russia and the CIS countries. The new Bobcat rotary telehandler range includes ten Stage V compliant models for the European market, with lifting heights from 18 to 39 metres and lifting capacities from four to seven tonnes. These are complemented by another four Stage IIIA engine-powered models aimed at the Middle East, Africa and Russia/CIS regions with lifting heights from 18 to 25 metres and lifting capacities from four to six tonnes. Olivier Traccucci, Bobcat Telehandler Senior Product Manager, said: “Our new rotary telehandler range offers an expanded model selection and increased lifting heights and lifting capacities. The new range offers cutting-edge technology that continues the theme of reinvention that is at the core of our Next is Now philosophy. As a result, they offer enhanced 360 degree performance to create the ultimate tools for even the most complex site handling jobs. A big choice of over 20 attachments and various options also ensures that working at height has never been so versatile, efficient, comfortable and safe.” Available to order now, with some of the machines already delivered in Europe, the new rotary telehandler range from Bobcat was introduced at an online launch event held on 2nd December. This was a continuation of the Next is

Now strategy presented for the first time in EMEA and Russia/CIS at a previous online event in October 2020, where Bobcat launched 48 products in 12 different categories.
A GROWING MARKET FOR ROTARY TELEHANDLERS
The rotary telehandler market continues to grow worldwide. In Europe, for example, the market has increased over the last five years by 23 per cent and in 2019 it reached over 3,000 units for the first time. In fact, 85 per cent of the global market volume is in the EMEA region. Invented in the early 1990s, rotary telehandlers feature a rotating turret and four stabilizers, which enable them to work solidly in place with full operating capacity. The 360 degree turret rotation allows the machines to handle loads everywhere in the working envelope without needing to move. This is an ideal solution in urban areas where spaces are tight and manoeuvring is limited. Their ability to work from a single point to cover all of a site and the fact that they can be used from the first to the last day of a construction project have made them an
increasingly attractive machine for construction sites. Rotary telehandlers are often called 3-in-1 machines as they combine the attributes of a telehandler with those of an aerial working platform and a crane. Applications are therefore mainly in construction (80 per cent) but also in industrial maintenance.
• • • •
Large windows for optimal visibility ROPS/FOPS certification Easily adjustable steering column Comfortable, fully adjustable seat
In the cab, all Bobcat rotary telehandlers are equipped with a large, bright touchscreen display with intuitive machine controls. Machine settings are managed over five different pages. Navigating between these pages is extremely easy and intuitive using the touch screen or the jog shuttle.
ATTACHMENT VERSALITY
In Bobcat rotary telehandlers, attachments are almost as important as the machine itself, as they provide the versatility needed on site. The attachments are usually forks (supplied as standard), crane jibs, winches or jib winches, man platforms and buckets. Most of the new Bobcat rotary telehandlers are equipped with a remote control to operate the machine from the man basket when elevating people as well as operating the machines remotely to enhance visibility and precision at work.
EASY TO USE AND SAFE
Bobcat rotary telehandlers automatically recognise the attachment they are being paired with using RFID technology, which also uploads the corresponding load charts onto the display. As a result, the machine is ready to work safely
within seconds and the touchscreen displays a dynamic load chart which allows the operator to keep an eye on the load’s centre of gravity. The Limit page also allows the operator to restrict the working zone in three dimensions and limit working speeds for maximum control and safety.
LARGE CHOICE OF OPTIONS AND HIGH-TECH FEATURES To provide customers with the ideal machine for their needs, Bobcat can offer a large choice of options, many of which are unique in this market, including: • Remote control with drive function. This provides radio control equipped with a screen, that allows the machine to be driven remotely and the stabilisation phases to be managed directly from the basket. This results in increased productivity and efficiency in winch, jib and man platform operations, among other benefits. • The Twin Power allows the machine to be used without starting the diesel engine, keeping the emissions on zero and providing silent operation. By connecting the machine to an external electricity supply (380V), this provides power for the machine, allowing it to perform all normal lifting and load positioning operations. A 15kW electric motor and a 90 litre/min piston pump guarantee the performance and precision required for every movement.
UNBEATABLE CAB EXPERIENCE
As in all Bobcat products, operator comfort is a prerequisite in the new rotary telehandlers and the innovative patented design of the cab is key to working safely on site, providing: • Fully pressurised environment • 100 per cent air filtration • Heating and air conditioning (except TR40.180)

www.diggers.live
PRODUCTS
The 525-60E uses two proven electric motors, one for the driveline and the second to power the hydraulic system. The 17kW traction motor drives through a permanent four-wheel drive dropbox, to proven JCB drive/steer axles. The 22kW hydraulic system motor powers a fixed displacement gear pump, delivering a maximum 80 litres/min of flow. Flow is proportional to joystick position and the lift end is controlled by an electrohydraulic valve block, with hydraulic regeneration on boom lower and retract. The electric motors are 85 per cent efficient, which compares well with the
www.diggers.live
45 per cent efficiency of a diesel engine. Extensive analysis of customer duty cycles through JCB’s LiveLink telematics system and on-site studies, tests and evaluation, has allowed JCB engineers to optimise the machine’s battery to meet customer requirements. The 96V Lithium-ion battery, is capable of providing full-shift operation. The traction drive motor utilises regenerative braking, instead of a traditional braking system, topping up the battery in the process. The hydraulic system also regenerates flow while lowering the boom, reducing the power
requirement and extending operating hours. The brake regen function automatically turns off when the battery is fully charged. The machine has the same on-board charger as other JCB E-TECH products, capable of recharging the battery in eight hours using a standard 240V, 16A electrical supply. An optional JCB Universal Charger can be used for a rapid top-up during breaks, in as little as 35 minutes. The 525-60E has been designed to meet the current and future needs of customers in a variety of industry sectors, providing zero-emissions operation for working inside livestock buildings, crop grading and storage sheds, glasshouses and polytunnels, while also complementing the growing use of battery-powered professional groundscare machinery used by golf courses and specialist contractors. In addition, the new telehandler can draw on low-cost renewable energy on farms and other rural enterprises that generate their own green electricity. A secondary benefit of electric operation is a significant reduction in noise levels, making the Loadall an attractive machine for operators behind the wheel, as well as for use in situations when working close to other people, such as in vegetable grading sheds and glasshouses. The 525-60E delivers an in-cab noise level of just 66.7dB, while the external level is 92.2dB. A white noise reversing alarm is available as an option, to warn site workers of machine movement. JCB has not compromised on operator comfort. The full-size ROPS/FOPS cab is well laid out and designed for fatigue-free operation, with easily located controls. The fully glazed cab has a 2.2kW heater, heated front, rear and side screens for rapid defrosting and demisting and a heated suspension seat, ensuring the operator is comfortable regardless of outside temperature. The 525-60E also uses JCB’s well proven and patented Load Control System, ensuring optimum safe load handling. External dimensions are unchanged from the diesel model and the 52560E offers the same 3.7 metre outside turn radius. Maximum lift capacity is 2,500kg, with a 2,000kg maximum load at the full six-metre lift height. The machine has been designed to deliver similar cycle times as the diesel telescopic, with no loss of performance. It can be used with forks, a range of buckets and many other JCB Loadall attachments.

particularly to our customers in the rental field. With our new four-tonne dumper DW40, we meet all applicable standards and offer our customers additional extras in safety, comfort, and performance.” The machine is equipped with a hydrostatic all-wheel drive, which means that no gear changing is required. This way, the operator can fully concentrate on his work. A constant tractive force of zero to the maximum speed of 25 km/h and the hydrostatic brake effect round off the driving experience. Additionally, modern engine technology meets the Stage V exhaust emissions standard and allows fast driving, which makes material transport very efficient. The automatic ECO mode also guarantees minimum consumption with optimal power utilisation, resulting in cost savings.
The safety extra
The large front and rear-view camera display and optimum arrangement of all operator controls make operation of the DW40 intuitive. At one touch, several functions can be carried out with the joystick, for example change of dump direction and operation. This way, the operator keeps his left hand on the steering wheel while operating multiple functions with the right hand. This makes material transport safe, comfortable and efficient. In addition, the entry and exit have been optimised for even more safety. The principle of the three contact points is fulfilled and the operator can get into the machine comfortably regardless of slopes or obstacles. The optional entry in signal colour makes the steps and grab handle even more visible.
Greater comfort – greater efficiency
To prevent the machine from rolling away on a slope, the dumper DW40 is equipped with a spring-loaded parking brake as standard, which is actuated automatically as soon as the engine is switched off. The standard auto-stop function switches off the machine when it is not being used, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The optional cabin ensures pleasant working in any weather and includes an airconditioning system and heater, LED work lights and radio with hands-free intercom. The dumper can be serviced quickly and easily as the service points can be easily reached from the ground. In addition, customers benefit from extended maintenance intervals.

In addition, the high swivel tip skip is ideally suited to bridging height differences in narrow spaces, as no space is required for manoeuvring and positioning the machine. The modern tilt sensor connected to it warns the operator optically and acoustically about possible instability and reduces the maximum travel speed of the machine as required. For the larger DW30 model, a concrete skip is also available, optimised for concrete processing. Additionally, the
optional cabin ensures pleasant working conditions. Both machines are likewise equipped with a hydrostatic drive system and an articulated pendulum joint. A 36kW engine for more demanding tasks and optional turf tires for ground protection applications complete the options for the DW30 model. Wacker Neuson offers its customers more than 20 different models of track and wheel dumpers, characterised by simple and safe operation. This includes the innovative Dual View Dumpers, which offer an unobstructed 360 degree view, with a 180 degree rotation of the entire operating and seat console, and two models with electric motor for emissionsfree work.
MECALAC UNVEILS NEW TRANSMISSION FOR MCR CRAWLER SKID EXCAVATORS The Mecalac 6MCR, 8MCR and 10MCR tracked skid excavators are now equipped with Speed Control travel management system as standard. This all-new feature allows the operator to set a maximum travel speed – regardless of engine speed. With 20 speeds available, the transmission essentially
acts as a limiter, making it easy to drive at very low speeds for applications such as mowing or planing. This enables operators to concentrate on the task in hand and prioritise safety. This technological evolution forms part of Mecalac’s ongoing commitment to simplifying the lives of users without compromising performance.

PROJECTS
NEW BOBCAT MINI-EXCAVATORS AND LOADERS ON MILAN DEMOLITION Demolishing a building in the centre of Milan requires specific prerogatives. The work must be carried out with surgical care, without damaging the adjacent buildings and without disturbing residents, in full compliance with environmental and safety regulations. This was certainly the case for the interior demolition in a prestigious five-storey building in the heart of the city. To carry out this delicate work, the contractor, Seli Manutenzioni Generali Srl of Monza, chose to purchase a fleet of five new Bobcat compact machines comprising two E17z mini-excavators, an E10z mini-excavator and two S70 skidsteer loaders. Thanks to their small dimensions and low weights, the three Bobcat mini-

excavators, equipped with breakers and other attachments, easily dealt with the precision demolition of the floors and other structures to make way for new stairwells and lift shafts. One of the E17z mini-excavators was also used in the topdown mode to demolish the roof to create new floor levels for the building. The two S70 skid-steer loaders were used to complete the process by handling and removing debris, unloading it into self-tipping bins, which in turn were moved with a crane. The five compact Bobcat machines involved in the work inside the building were able to work comfortably even in the tightest spaces, where bulkier machines would not have been able to manoeuvre properly.
Seli Manutenzioni Generali Srl
Founded in the 1960s, Seli is a wellestablished company specialising in the construction of civil and industrial buildings. Seli is structured into four business units – Construction, Finishing, Plant and Demolition/Excavation – each of which is managed by a technical manager with proven experience in each sector. The most recently formed Business Unit is Demolition/Excavation, which has recruited several engineers and Ivano Perego as Sales Manager. Since October 2019, this division has been winning important contracts, particularly in Milan and its province. For Seli, the brand of choice for the machines to carry out this important demolition work is Bobcat. Perego said: “We chose to purchase Bobcat skidsteer loaders and mini-excavators as we consider them to be extremely high performing and reliable. This allowed us to provide a guarantee to the customer that the job would be carried out with maximum efficiency and precision. Our operators are completely satisfied with the quality of Bobcat machines and attachments, in terms of their power, comfort and safety. We are very happy with the choice of Bobcat equipment and our relationship with the Bobcat dealer, DMO.” In fact, Seli has recently signed an agreement with DMO – the authorised dealer for both Bobcat and Doosan for the regions of Emilia Romagna, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Lombardy (the provinces for Milan, Cremona, Mantua, Lodi, Pavia, Varese, Monza and Brianza) – as the company’s main supplier for the rental and sale of construction machinery. The negotiations with Seli were led by Gianmaria Lupis, DMO sales manager for Lombardy. He said: “The strong partnership with Seli has led to a number of machinery orders, including the five Bobcat compact machines involved in this demolition work. Alongside DMO’s role in sales and rental, we also offer a full aftersales service, which proved to be a decisive factor in Seli’s choice of DMO as machinery supplier.”

HS2 BOOSTS SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY WITH INNOVATIVE ROBOT FOR CHILTERN TUNNELLING MACHINES HS2 today unveiled the use of an innovative onboard robot that will improve safety and efficiency on the high speed rail project’s first two giant tunnelling machines, set to launch early next year. Pioneered by HS2’s main works contractor, Align, the Krokodyl robot is the first of its kind anywhere in the world and will be installed in the two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that will be used to bore the 10-mile-long Chiltern tunnels. The Krokodyl robot, working in a similar manner to the robotic arms used in a car factory production line, will carry out simple repetitive tasks – removing
58
DIGGERSLIVE
wooden spacers between tunnel segments and inserting connection dowels – that people would normally do. Segments weigh up to eight tonnes and are delivered to the TBM with wooden spacers between them, which are generally removed by hand. By fully automating this process, the Krokodyl removes the need for people to work in this potentially hazardous area and helps with the installation of the 112,000 tunnel segments. The tunnel segments are erected as the TBM moves forward, forming a structural, watertight ring designed to support the ground loads. A second aspect of the robot, known
as the Dobydo, then places the dowels into position ready for the segment to be slotted into place. Again, by automating this process, the robot reduces risk to people and improves safety and efficiency. The Align joint venture – Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine, and VolkerFitzpatrick – built on its experience of delivering major tunnelling project across the world to develop the Krokodyl. Eddie Woods, HS2 Ltd’s Head of Tunnelling said, “Safety is a key priority for HS2 and the introduction of these innovations that essentially remove personnel from harm’s way, is an excellent example of the sort of initiatives we are pleased to see implemented on the project. It is one of the ways that ‘safe at heart’ can be achieved by minimising exposure in high-risk locations.” Didier Jacques, Align’s Underground Construction Director said, “Safety is a key value that is shared by everyone working on HS2, including the client, Align itself and our supply chain partners. A lot of work has been undertaken by all concerned that has enabled us to develop and introduce this robot, thereby reducing the risk to our personnel, operating in our state of the art TBMs. We are very proud of these innovations, which we would be happy to share with tunnelling teams working on other projects across the world to help reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries.” The two 2,000 tonne TBMs – named Florence and Cecilia – are due to be launched early next year from a site close to the M25. Both 170-metre-long machines are specifically designed for the mix of chalk and flint they will encounter under the Chilterns. Operating a pioneering “continuous boring” technique, they are expected to take around three years to excavate the 9.1-metre diameter tunnels, which will be lined with a concrete ring made of seven separate segments as they go. The TBMs will convert the spoil into slurry, which will be pumped back to the Align main site where it will be treated before being used for landscaping on-site, removing the need for additional HGVs on local roads. A video showing the robot at work and interviews with the people behind the innovation is available here: https:// youtu.be/xruGsFPV4Gw.
