EDITORIAL TEAM
WELCOME As working from home becomes a distant memory, putting together the first post-lockdown issue of Diggers LIVE has been made immeasurably easier. There’s been no need to schedule a Zoom for artwork (which won’t work), send sales queries on a WhatsApp group (that aren’t answered), or copy enquires (that get lost in the ether). Saying that, the ease of shouting through to next door, “How do I spell Hilary, one L or two?” is diminished when colleagues want to have a chat, leading to long liquid lunches or coffee and a bun mid-morning. We are back in our offices full-time, all departments working as one to bring you the very best, news, views and video from the plant world and we love it. My team and I like to cooperate with like-minded people and organisations and this occurred once more this week when leading plant magazine UK Plant Operators and Diggers LIVE formed an alliance, giving us a shot in the arm and lending us greater reach and credibility. We really don’t mess about. For the next issue of Diggers LIVE (July 2021), we are working on a big feature to support UK Plant Operators’ hugely popular “UK Plant Operator 2021” contest and event. Brian, Jeff and the team at team at UK Plant Operators share the same vision as we do – not about individuals or egos but about the benefit of the industry and marrying up excellent equipment, technologies and training with those working in plant. We all want to get the very best equipment and technology into our respective magazines and in front of the cameras. In this issue, we have an interview with Harry Mellor, LiuGong Europe Product Manager for Excavators, bespoke excavator and attachments features, an interview with three new recruits at Paragon Bank and a lot more. Please do let me and the team what you think. I can be contacted via: ben@chambers.media. Best regards,

A HALO Trust JCB 457ZX wheeled loading shovel on duty
JCB supports landmine clearance in Afghanistan Landmine clearance charity The HALO Trust is currently operating a fleet of JCBs to clear minefields in Afghanistan and these will soon be joined an armour plated JCB X Series tracked excavator. HALO’s programme in Afghanistan is the largest humanitarian landmine clearance project in the world. Four modified JCBs – a 457ZX wheeled loading shovel, JCB Hydradig, JCB Teletruk and 8008 micro excavator – already play key roles and the new heavily armoured JCB 220X is set to arrive shortly. Each features HALO’s standard white livery denoting the neutral, humanitarian nature of the activity along with varying degrees of protection, dependent on threat level. The HALO Trust’s Head of Region Afghanistan, Middle East and North Africa, Calvin Ruysen said:

DIGGERSLIVE
“HALO has carried out mechanised mine clearance for many years in Afghanistan, but the original four JCBs allowed us to renew our ageing fleet and brought working efficiencies at a crucial time. “This new armoured JCB 220X will further help reduce deaths and injuries from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and it is good to be working with British companies, technology and engineers to take this off-the-shelf excavator and up-armour it to suit our specific needs to help save lives. “If you look at the latest UN report on Afghanistan, with IEDs accounting for the second largest number of conflict-related civilian deaths and injuries, we are keen to expand our mine-clearing capability and as a humanitarian charity we want to address that as quickly as possible.”
The cab on the JCB 220X has been protected with blast resistant armoured plating and will tackle the highest threat level in the region, which comes from pressure-plate IEDs. Fitted with a quick hitch, it can quickly change between a general digging bucket and a rake attachment, which is very effective at finding and safely dislodging any mines from the ground. The protection on the JCB220X was provided by Martin Williams (Hull) Ltd, which has a division specialising in the design and build of armoured vehicles. Its customers range from the Ministry of Defence, the United Nations and NATO to non-governmental organisations, humanitarian groups and international charities such as HALO. The cab features 100 mm glazing and three layers of blast protection

made from Armox 440T strengthened steel, which is specifically designed for vehicle armour to provide penetration and blast resistance. The HALO Trust is the world’s largest humanitarian mine clearance organisation. It creates safe and secure environments in war torn communities by clearing landmines, managing stockpiles of weapons and destroying unexploded ordnance. It was founded in Afghanistan in 1988 and has around 8,000 fulltime staff operating in conflict and post-conflict zones in 19 countries and territories. HALO is increasingly working in urban environments, clearing explosives from bombdamaged buildings and contaminated rubble. It is keen to tap into the expertise of the UK demolition industry as it develops new techniques.

Wacker Neuson Group optimistic about 2021
Kurt Helletzgruber CEO and CFO of the Wacker Neuson Group
The Executive Board of the Wacker Neuson Group is looking to the future with a sense of optimism after a challenging year in 2020. Given the positive prospects for the construction and agricultural industries, coupled with a significantly higher order backlog relative to the previous year, the Executive Board expects to report growth in all three reporting regions in 2021 and across its three business segments of light equipment, compact equipment and services. Kurt Helletzgruber, CEO and CFO of the Wacker Neuson Group said: “COVID-19 presented all of us with sizeable challenges over the past year, and the pandemic is far from over. Nevertheless, all signs are pointing towards renewed growth in 2021 and we are very confident about the coming weeks and months. “Our customers are busy and our order books are well filled. We worked hard on improving efficiency levels across the entire group last year. We are not yet where we want to be but I am very optimistic about the development of our profitability for 2021 and beyond.”

Doosan ‘transparent bucket’ greatly increases operational safety Doosan Infracore Europe has launched the industry’s first wheel loader ‘transparent bucket’ system allowing the driver to see blind spots in front of the bucket using the monitor in the cab. The system records images in front of the wheel loader with top and bottom frontloaded cameras and shows combined images on the cab monitor in real time using a curved projection method. Blind spots caused by the buckets to the front of wheel loaders have long been a major safety concern. With the new Doosan transparent bucket, however, the driver can easily check the blind spots in front of the bucket via the cab monitor. The transparent bucket system can also significantly increase efficiency

by providing a forward-view for the driver during loading/unloading or when carrying materials such as aggregates, sand and soil. Doosan Infracore is the first company in the world to develop and apply a front projection function with the transparent bucket for construction machines. The company has also developed safety systems such as the around view monitor (AVM) system and an ultrasonic rear warning system. Both have received very favourable responses from customers. A Doosan Infracore spokesperson said: “As machinery and site safety standards continue to be significantly raised around the world, advanced safety systems have become a key factor in selecting equipment. We plan to continue developing safety features that can protect drivers and other workers on site, and we aim to be at the forefront in creating construction sites that are safer and accident-free.”

Suitable for use on excavators ranging from one to 120 tonnes, the quick coupler is made of high-grade steel and locks attachments in place, meeting all safety criteria and at full system pressure. Thanks to the extensive facilities and state-of-the-art equipment at its sites in West Sussex and Leicestershire and its team of mobile engineers,

considerable cost savings and lower carbon emissions. Fitted with GKD 2RCi height and slew limiters, these excavators meet Highways England’s safety standards for plant machinery operating near live traffic lanes. Additionally, the magenta beacon offers further visible assurance that the system is in full operation. In addition to height and slew limiters, the 2RCi has the option of envelope control, which is the facility for parallel or multi-point virtual walls, combined with integrated height control. This gives the operator the ability to initiate full envelope control, ensuring the machine operates safely whether in lifting or excavation modes.
Envelope control is particularly important when machines operate in restricted environments, such as close to open highways or underneath overhead obstructions. Key switches allow supervisors to set and lock limits and an RCI system can be switched off when not required, for example on rental machines. The system provides full data logging of all activities, with integrated diagnostics providing information for the safe operation and effective maintenance of machines. The new Lynch Takeuchi miniexcavators are already out on hire on the M1 improvement project, carrying out essential motorway upgrades.

Paragon’s construction finance team sharpens regional focus with new appointment
Paragon Bank’s construction finance team has strengthened its regional presence in the Midlands and south west with the appointment of business development manager Todd Auger.
Todd, who will be based in Leicester, has 14 years’ experience within the sector. He joins from Komatsu Finance where he developed his specialist knowledge of construction, including new and used construction equipment and classic asset finance products such as hire purchase and operating leases. He has also worked at RBS Group within the asset finance team as a senior relationship manager across a number of different sectors. Todd is the third business development manager appointed to the construction team since January, following Chris Shaw and Kelly Matthews. Construction finance sits within Paragon Bank’s SME Lending division, supporting the needs of the UK’s small to medium-sized companies.
Todd said: “I will be focusing on supporting new and existing clients across the East Midlands and south west region, covering Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, the West Country and South Wales. My focus will be on direct business funding, working with a range of customers and machinery suppliers. “I’m looking forward to getting out and meeting customers and dealers as the pandemic restrictions start to ease.” Terry Lloyd, head of construction finance at Paragon, said: “It’s great to have Todd on board as our latest addition to the construction team. “Todd’s wealth of specialist knowledge and experience will be a massive asset in helping us support customers across the UK while demonstrating our commitment to the sector.
Q1 UK construction equipment sales up 30% on 2020 Retail sales of construction and earthmoving equipment in March were close to double the levels seen in March last year, when the impact of COVID was felt for the first time. As a result, sales in the first quarter were 30 per cent above 2020 levels and reached over 8,000 units. Sales in the first quarter of the year were expected to show a big increase on last year due to the pandemic, so it is interesting to compare sales with Q1 2019 to put the strength of the recovery into context. This shows that sales this year were 2.9 per cent above 2019 levels and suggests significant momentum in the market in the early months of the year.
18
DIGGERSLIVE
While concerns remain that equipment sales could be held back this year due to supply-side constraints for some components, there is growing confidence that sales should see a strong recovery for the full year. Growth in sales is still being driven by excavators. Mini/Midi excavators (up to 10 tonnes) and other crawler excavators saw the strongest growth compared with Q1 last year. Among the other equipment types, road rollers and telehandlers also showed strong recoveries in the first quarter. The construction equipment statistics exchange covers sales on a regional basis
in the UK and Northern Ireland. Sales in the south east were the strongest (up 39 per cent), while Wales saw the weakest sales in the first quarter, still two per cent below last year’s levels. Sales in the Republic of Ireland saw a more modest increase in March compared with the UK. This resulted in Q1 sales this year 12 per cent above 2020 levels.
The construction equipment statistics exchange is run by Systematics International Ltd. This scheme is run in partnership with the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), the UK trade association.

INTERVIEW
THE EQUIPMENT ENGAGEMENT Harry Mellor, LiuGong Europe Product Manager for Excavators tells Diggers LIVE a little about himself and the company he works for
Q
How long have you been working in the industry? I’d like to think all of my life. I grew up on a farm with my family in property development, so I’ve always been around tractors, backhoe loaders, mini excavators and dumpers. But in terms of actually working for a construction equipment company, nine years.
Q
How did you start out in the industry? I always knew I wanted to be involved in plant and equipment, so I joined the JCB Academy in Staffordshire as a sixth form student when it first opened. I studied an engineering diploma, maths and physics A Level. Two years later, I joined JCB as a Higher Apprentice studying a four-year course with one day a week at Sheffield Hallam University and four days at work. This really fast-tracked me into the industry as I’d got four years working experience plus a Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering by the time I was 22.
20
DIGGERSLIVE
Q
What attracted you to the industry? Having grown up operating and fixing our own machinery, I’ve always enjoyed it although my heart was with tractors originally. Then nine years ago, when I got involved with excavators during my apprenticeship, I became fascinated with excavators’ ability to undertake such a wide variety of work, not just moving muck. I think this is what makes them such an exciting product.
Q
Tell us about the different aspects of your work. As a product manager, the machines you are responsible for become almost like your child. You want to know everything about them and to ensure they are the best they can be, so the job description isn’t so straightforward, but most of all it is my responsibility to be the voice of the customer. The number one priority is meeting customers, listening to them, understanding their work and reporting
that to the right teams to develop our offering. That can take my involvement into all kinds of topics from R&D and manufacturing to sales, marketing, service or finance – it is all part of the scope.
Q
What do you find most rewarding in work? I personally really enjoy launching a new machine to the market. When you have worked on a product for a number of years from concept, through planning and development phases, to actually release the machine and see the response from operators, customers and media is a great feeling as I take a lot of pride in the products I manage.
Q
Which parts of work are most challenging? No job is easy, and if it is then I don’t think someone is pushing themselves to their full potential. Personally, I thrive off a challenge and I am always looking
www.diggers.live

to expand my breadth of knowledge and experience. I do find myself quite lucky though as I am passionate about my work so I don’t see challenges as negatives, just the next thing I need to overcome to succeed. A positive mental attitude definitely helps.

Where would you like to go next in the world of work? I love my job as product manager although I am always looking for opportunities to grow and advance my career, I think that is important for everyone to have a plan or some targets for what they want to achieve. What I do know is that LiuGong has a huge future in front of it and is constantly expanding so there is a lot of opportunity for growth within the company.
Q
Tell us about the history and development of LiuGong LiuGong was founded in 1958 in Liuzhou, China and has grown to be a

huge presence on the global construction equipment market. Today we have over 10,000 employees, 13 overseas subsidiaries, 20 manufacturing plants and five R&D centres, including the ones in the UK and in Poland. This is extremely important to the company, having local experts across the globe developing the design of our products to meet the various needs of customers. Our European product range mainly focuses on excavators, loaders, dozers and skid steers, however the Guangxi LiuGong Group is a massive company with probably the most comprehensive range of machinery, more than any other manufacturer, with products in road, cranes, mining, access, concrete, agriculture, piling, crushing etc. I have no doubt that in the future more of these products will be available for the European market as we continue to grow and strive to offer our customers the full range of products to meet all of their needs.
Q
Tell us a little about LiuGong’s standout products. It is a very exciting time at LiuGong, there are so many new products being released or in the development phase. I think the most standout products recently have been our new F Series excavator range starting with the 9018F, 1.8T and the 995F, 95T machine. They are fantastic products and receiving an excellent response from the market, with customers recognising them for their power and precision combined with comfort and cost of ownership. Another great product, pre-launched at ConExpo last year, is the Dressta TD-16N. Our all-new dozer sets the new benchmark in visibility in the industry, rewrites the rulebook on product design and deservedly won the Red Dot product design award. For these new products, it’s thanks to our UK industrial design centre and European R&D teams, who are really striving to meet the needs of European customers.

INTERVIEW
Q
What makes LiuGong different? I think it is our approach to the market that is really important. Our tag line for Bauma ’19 was “LiuGong is Listening” and it couldn’t be a truer statement. We’re investing in more local and regional offices and dealerships to get closer to the customers and hear their difficulties so we can look for ways to resolve them, not just through product design but also how we do business. We want to ensure we aren’t just a retailer of machine but a partner to the customer helping them to grow.
Q
What can a customer expect when they buy LiuGong? The LiuGong moto is ‘Tough World, Tough Equipment’ and I think that is very important. Machines are only making customers money when they are working, and when they are working, they need to be productive, so ‘up time’ is critical for LiuGong. In the UK, customers are working with LiuGong Machinery Direct UK, so they are dealing directly with the manufacturer and that means a lot for our backup promise. We have a huge parts store in the UK and a strong service support team who are dedicated to keeping our customers going, which I know is why a lot of customers choose LiuGong and then continue to do business with us for the second or third machine, and so on.
Q
What can we expect from LiuGong in the future? The number one thing you will see is continued investment into Europe. The management are very clear about our strategy, and developing our position in the European market is of paramount importance. So, you can expect new innovative products, new dealerships and locations to increase our coverage and ability to get closer to the customer and increased support in Europe. Today we are the only Chinese brand that builds loaders and excavators in Europe and we plan to continue expanding those facilitates to support our commitments to our customers to be increasingly easier to do business with.
the new technologies required. Eventually it becomes a more saturated market and solutions become more cost effective for construction equipment to take on board. When you consider technologies that are growing in popularity such as inertia measurement units (IMUs) that allow semi-automated control, helping to fill the skills shortage and improve the productivity and efficiency of even seasoned operators, you can figure out what will follow. In the same way a car is now fitted with radars and object detection systems, these will also become more readily available for construction in the coming years. The obvious challenge is that, unlike a car, a construction machine is working in an ever-changing environment, without road signs or warnings. Its job is to actually drive into material, so ensuring these systems are clever enough to identify and classify objects and do it at a reasonable cost is going to take some time. Nevertheless the roadmap is clear. The other key driver in the world at the moment of course is sustainability and power generation. New electric vehicles are springing up on a weekly basis at the moment so, alternatives to diesel such as battery technology will grow quite quickly in our industry, more than any
other technology development, I think. Sustainability and carbon footprints are in the spotlight. Whether you are an owner operator in Norway or a large UK rental company, it will soon reach the point of winning future business or not depending on whether you have electric machines in your fleet.
And finally: What’s your tipple of choice? A German Weißbier followed by an Irish whiskey chaser. Favourite cuisine? Smoked barbecue meats, Asian teppanyaki or a good old fashioned Melton Mowbray pork pie. What’s your bucket list activity? Hunting big game in Alaska.
Q
What are the biggest technological developments you have seen in the industry and what do you envisage as future game changers? I think it’s quite a clear picture. The construction equipment industry follows the pattern of commercial and automotive, as generally these sectors have the economies of scale to develop

What the super-deduction means for you In the 2021 Spring Budget, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced an investment incentive, referred to as the super-deduction. From 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2023, companies will receive a 130 per cent deduction against taxes for new plant and machinery purchases. Here Steve Breen, General Manager of Construction Industries at exclusive Caterpillar dealer Finning UK & Ireland, explains why there is no better time to upgrade your fleet
The Chancellor referred to the super deduction as the biggest business tax cut in modern history, since this is the first time capital allowances have been available at over 100 per cent, representing a substantial bonus for companies planning on investing. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, already low levels of business investment have fallen, with a reduction of 11.6 per cent between Q3 in 2019 and Q3 in 2020. In response, the UK government has introduced the superdeduction, alongside other capital allowances such as 50 per cent first-year allowance for special rate assets, annual investment allowance (AIA) and enhanced capital allowances (ECA+). However, with so many new schemes introduced, businesses might be unsure of how to make the most of them.
What is the super-deduction?
Companies can now claim 130 per cent capital allowances on qualifying plant and machinery investment, which means that, for every pound they invest, their taxes will be cut by 25 pence. Previously, the tax deduction was capped at the cost of the investment, and relief was deferred over a longer period at 18 per cent depreciation per annum.
24
DIGGERSLIVE
This means that, before the incentive was introduced, a piece of equipment costing £100,000 would qualify for a firstyear tax deduction of £18,000, resulting in a first-year tax saving of £3,420. With the super-deduction, the same piece of equipment would qualify for a tax deduction of £130,000, leading to a saving of £24,700.
What qualifies?
Before making a purchase, it’s important to know whether it qualifies for the new tax relief. The super-deduction can only be used with acquisitions made between 1 April, 2021 and 31 March, 2023. It’s not available for equipment delivered in March, as well as customer contracts, such as invoices and purchase orders, entered into before 3 March, 2021. It only applies to new equipment, so secondhand purchases, or rebuilds, will not qualify. Despite the clear benefits, it’s understandable that many businesses aren’t in a position to make a large upfront payment right now. However, the superdeduction can be used in conjunction with some of Cat Financial’s financing offers, so it’s worth speaking to our team to find out more. With the opportunity to receive a larger write off in the year of purchase,
Steve Breen plus an improved return on investment, reduction in cash taxes and the ability to recover the initial cost of the equipment more quickly, there really is no better time to upgrade your fleet or purchase your first machine. To find out more about the equipment that Finning has to offer visit www.finning.com/en_GB.

The Doosan Concept-X Excavator design
As a future-oriented unmanned construction machine, Doosan Infracore’s Concept-X Excavator design is characterised by the absence of a cab and the four separated continuous tracks. The four-track configuration aids stability on uneven ground. Concept-X is the world’s first unmanned automated and integrated control solution, introduced by Doosan
Infracore for construction, quarrying and mining sites in 2019. It can work unattended with drones surveying the site; automatically analyse data; establish the work plan and transfer the data to machinery such as excavators and wheel loaders. iF International Forum Design GmbH, said: “This concept raises the bar and pushes the bounds of technology with an ambitious vision for the future of construction equipment. “Unmanned trucks and excavators supervised by drones introduce sci-fi systems and automotive styling to a conventional sector. The possibilities are endless: improved safety, productivity, precision and quality.”

Bobcat L85 Compact Wheel Loader
Compact Wheel Loaders are often used by less experienced operators, so Bobcat optimised the L85 for confident operation. Intuitiveness and visibility were key, resulting in the short, steep rear bonnet and fully glass doors on both sides. The rear-view camera and LED lights further improve visibility. All operator controls are grouped on the side console, with the joystick connected directly to the seat armrest (unique in this size category), further increasing comfort and ease-of-use. Working with Bobcat on the L85 was Munich-based design company, Lumod GmbH. Jaroslav Fišer, Product Line Director for the Bobcat compact loader range in the EMEA region, said: “We are delighted that the L85 has won in the Automobiles / Vehicles subcategory of the iF Product Discipline Award and we thank Lumod for their important role in guiding the design of the new machine. “The L85 also brings Bobcat’s iconic ‘One Tough Animal’ brand language into the CWL market. Powerful, agile, robust; the prominent tailgate grill frame in Bobcat orange is a unique feature element. Sophisticated 3D-shape artwork carrying signet, model number and logo is new and underlines the machine’s robustness. The interior is equipped with strong branding elements that connect the exterior with the interior and give the operator the powerful Bobcat-like feeling.” The L85 is ideal for a multitude of tasks in a very wide range of industries. It can be used in construction, landscaping, rental, industrial, waste, recycling and agriculture, but is also ideal for road work, snow removal, maintenance and many other applications.

Wacker Neuson Zero Tail excavator wins prestigious design award

DIGGERSLIVE
Wacker Neuson has always placed great importance on the design language of its construction machines and equipment. Now, the Zero Tail excavator EZ50 has been distinguished with the prestigious Red Dot Award: Product Design. The Red Dot is an internationally renowned seal of quality, with over 60 years of tradition. Today, with more than 18,000 annual submissions by designers, businesses and organisations from more than 70 countries, the Red Dot Award is one of the largest and most renowned design competitions worldwide. In the utility vehicle area, the five-tonne EZ50 excavator received a distinction for product design. Stefan Bogner, spokesperson for Wacker Neuson, said: “Wacker Neuson is known for its characteristic design language. To have impressed the jury for the Red Dot Award with the compelling design of the excavator EZ50 makes us even happier.” The rear of the upper structure of the powerful EZ50 does not protrude over the tracks, cutting the risk of damaging the machine or walls when swivelling. In matters of safety, design plays a key role. Large windows, an intelligent configuration of cabin components, and a quick-falling enclosure concept allow ideal all-round visibility. The Active Working Signal (AWS), a red LED light strip at the rear, further increases safety; exterior trim can be opened wide without tools guaranteeing easy maintenance access – important for routine checks; and the compact cabin has easy to reach stowage compartments. Overall, the machine has a sturdy yet highly dynamic effect. The language of form is linear, modern and timeless with a sophisticated, concentrated and self-confident appearance. Gerald Krenn, Head of Corporate Industrial Design of the Wacker Neuson Group said: “For us, the principle [that] form follows function always applies first. Besides, an emotional language of form, an intuitive operating concept and aspects of safety play an important part in product design. In combining all these demands, we have succeeded once more with our new excavator EZ50.” The excavator impressed the jury of around 50 international experts, which evaluates products according to innovation, ergonomics, functionality, durability, formal quality and environmental compatibility.

ith protected hydraulics, sensors and cables, the new Boomer M20 from Epiroc is designed to minimise unplanned stops and maximise uptime and performance in highly demanding operations. The machine is the result of extensive research and real world testing and has been developed in collaboration with customers. Everyday wear and tear on hydraulic hoses is a major challenge in underground work. Falling rocks and debris and continuous wear against tunnel floors and walls mean constant hose repairs. The Boomer M20’s heavy-duty hoseless boom design minimises unplanned maintenance, keeping the rig up and running in even the toughest conditions.
Automated features
Precision and performance are ensured thanks to on board automation, teleremote capabilities and digital drill plans, which give higher reliability over the full drill cycle. By using High Performance Development, the Boomer M20 allows the operator to adjust and download drill plans directly at the face, eliminating the need for adjustments on the surface. With digital drill plan handling, drill rounds will be longer, more precise and give far less overbreak. Cost savings of up to 25 per cent and an increase in productivity of up to 40 per cent can be achieved by using High Performance Development.
Safer work environment
The Boomer M20 has a number of features that secure a safe working environment. Using teleremote capabilities, operators can drill from a safe distance away from hazardous areas and keep production going over shift changes. Multi-functional joysticks allow operators to keep their eyes on the task at all times. The unique cabin is designed to give optimum visibility and noise and vibration dampening materials keep the noise level as low as just 65 decibels. The safe bolting platforms are another great advantage, avoiding operation under an unsupported rock.
Battery driveline option
The new Boomer M20 continues the charge towards electrification in underground mining, coming with a battery-electric driveline option. This brings additional savings on health, maintenance, ventilation and cooling. With the onboard charger, the operator does not need to plan for charging, as it automatically takes place while connected to the grid for drilling. Thanks to the high-capacity battery, the Boomer M20 has a fantastic driving range and there is nothing to disturb the drift cycle. Travis Battley, Underground Business Manager for North America, said: “In addition to cost savings, the Boomer M20 also contributes to a healthier and safer work environment for miners everywhere, thanks to the optional battery-electric driveline.” Epiroc President and CEO, Helena Hedblom, said: “We are in this for the thrill of solving the real problem. For the adventure and energy found in new perspectives. The Boomer M20 is another great example of how we make a difference through innovation.”

The tyre set function detects pile contact and automatically lifts against the pile to set the tyres and increase available traction. The lift stall prevention feature automatically manages rimpull in-dig to prevent hydraulic stall while lifting through the face, so the 992 spends less time in the pile. Optional new Payload Overload Prevention allows for productivity and efficiency improvements by providing a large enough bucket to be used to
achieve target pass-match across a range of material densities without the risk of overload. With the overload value fully adjustable based on the target payload, this feature can be configured to automatically stop or slow the lift function when the overload value is exceeded. Improvements to the setback and strike plane angles, a longer bucket floor, and a stronger and larger bottom section increase the bucket fill factor by 10 per cent. The taller side plate with level top surface helps to improve visibility beyond the bucket edge to the material pile.

ith procurement becoming ever more complex, time consuming and expensive, producing building materials on site using their own heavy equipment is the easiest solution for many companies. And when construction sites are located in areas inaccessible to heavy vehicles, it is also the most practical solution. This applies to those working on large or small urban redevelopment sites, roadworks, bridge demolitions and in quarries. For example, when a Bulgarian company had to demolish an old house in a limited space, they installed an MB-L160 crusher bucket on the Case 6 backhoe loader already on site. This made it quick and easy to load the debris, crush it on site and obtain quality material they could reuse as the foundation for the new homes. With no need to process the waste and repurchase it from a recycling centre or a quarry, they saved time and cut costs. With MB Crusher, you set up your own recycling centre on site, creating high quality ready-to-use materials with reducing processing times, no transport costs and complete independence from other suppliers. In Nimes, in France, a company constructing 745 housing units needed to redevelop an old farm road for interdistrict service and create a drainage network for rainwater. With the need to excavate and produce a large amount of inert waste, for the contractor Société Travaux Publics Bastide, MB Crusher was the only choice. The MB-S18 screening bucket selected the fine materials, while the BF80.3 crusher bucket processed the larger rocks. The aggregates were reused immediately by laying them over the drainage network trench, avoiding all logistical and material disposal fees and material purchasing fees. “The advantage is that you put back the materials that you have extracted,” said Thierry Bastide, Manager of Société Travaux Publics Bastide. The advantages of MB Crusher are not only in reducing the cost of transportation and treating or disposing of waste; they extend to the material’s quality. A recent example is when the Santo Spirito bridge in Puglia, Italy, was damaged by a landslide and needed to be demolished. The contractor used MB’s crusher and screening bucket to reduce the spoil to the required size, resulting in material that exceeded the standards for road substrate to reconstruct the bridge. In short, if you want something done right, do it yourself. If you want something made right…

JCB expands compact excavator line with new 3.5-tonne models JCB is launching a 3.5-tonne zero tailswing compact excavator and a new 3.6-tonne conventional model, expanding its ‘Next Generation’ line-up to meet customer demand.
Features include: • • • • •
An engine designed for global markets with new hydraulic system Larger ROPS cab/canopy with new instrumentation Improved dig-end geometry with 40mm bucket pins and 500-hour greasing Easy to clean H-frame undercarriage design with auto kick-down motors Reprofiled dozer blade delivering increased productivity
Productive power
While the new 35Z-1 zero tailswing model is a replacement for the previous generation 8035ZTS, the conventional rear-end 36C-1 is a totally new model. The zero tailswing model is ideal for working in confined areas, providing greater protection as the counterweight rotates within the width of the machine. The 36C-1 provides increased productivity with more reach, stability and lifting performance. Both machines are powered by a three-cylinder Stage V/T4 Final Perkins engine, delivering 18.4 kW (24.6hp). This engine uses mechanical fuel injection and has no requirement for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) or any form of exhaust aftertreatment. The engine is suitable for Stage V territories, is EPA approved for the North American market and can be used in global Tier 3 regions. A programmable auto-idle function (two to 30 secs) reduces engine speed to 1,400 rpm when the levers have not been used for a pre-set time. When the left-hand control pod is lifted, isolating the machine’s hydraulics, the engine speed
50

falls again, to 1,100 rpm, reducing fuel consumption and noise levels. A large engine canopy provides easy access to daily checks, with a scalloped counterweight providing easy changing of the engine oil filter. A hinged air conditioning radiator (where fitted) swings out to provide access to the main radiator for cleaning.
Maximum control
The two machines use the latest BoschRexroth variable displacement, loadsensing, electro-proportional hydraulic pump. This new technology eliminates stalling, making it possible to use all of the engine’s output. A closed-centre valve block provides improved flow, for smoother, more precisely controlled operation, particularly when multifunctioning. The valve block is easy to access, beneath a removable floor plate, where engineers can also find the slew motor. The complete hydraulic system is equipped with O-ring face seals, for maximum sealing and all hydraulic hoses are colour-coded for ease of identification. High-flow, electro-proportional, doubleacting auxiliary hydraulics are now standard on both excavators, delivering 70 litres/min of flow. The auxiliary flow is controlled using a proportional thumb roller on the right-hand joystick. A single to double-acting changeover is now electronically-controlled by a switch in the cab, rather than the manual changeover tap on the previous generation machine. Double acting low-flow auxiliary hydraulics can also be specified, delivering 30 litres/min of flow. This circuit is controlled through a thumb roller on the left-hand joystick. Selectable high and low flow auxiliary modes, from five to 100 per cent of the available flow, provide attachment compatibility with all makes of work tools.
Operator comfort
The 35Z-1 and 36C-1 share the same new ROPS/TOPS cab and canopy structure. Flat glazing is used throughout, to minimise replacement costs and an optional FOPS Level 1 guard is offered for further protection. The front screen has a 70/30 split, for maximum visibility to the working area and the lower glass section can be removed and stored inside the rear left-hand window. Slim cab pillars provide excellent visibility all around the machine. Available as a canopy, a cab with heater, or a cab with air conditioning, the spacious working area provides increased legroom for the operator. There are no auxiliary or boom offset pedals on the floor, to provide additional comfort in the cab. Bolt-on grab handles and a large door aperture make it easy to access the high-backed suspension seat. An electroproportional dozer control is standard and the removable floor mat is easy to clean, with no logos or steps. The membrane switch layout to the right of the operator is easy to read and a new four-inch display screen provides all operating information. This includes an automatic health check with the first key on, at the start of the day. A rotary work mode controller regulates the engine and hydraulic output, while two toggle switches allow the operator to personalise the information available on the main screen. Where hose burst valves are supplied, a Load Moment Indicator (LMI) can be activated in the screen, providing an indication of safe working loads when lifting. Cab builds have a Bluetooth radio and there is a 12V socket and two USB ports for charging of mobile phones and other electrical devices. Both the cab and canopy have LED work lights as standard, with follow-me-home functionality. As with all JCB compact excavators, the 35Z-1 and 36C-1 are equipped with JCB’s 2Go safety system, that requires the operator to press a secondary switch to activate the hydraulic controls. The machines are provided with an immobiliser to prevent theft and JCB LiveLink is standard, providing a telematic link to the excavator to ensure that it remains well-maintained and delivering maximum productivity.
Robust construction
The compact excavators use a new H-frame undercarriage design for increased rigidity. This open centre design allows spoil to fall from the carriage, reducing material buildup. The track legs have chamfered edges, also making it

easier to keep clean. A smooth front idler, four bottom rollers and a single top roller ensure a smooth ride and the Nachi track motors have an auto-kickdown function. There are 12 dedicated tie-down points on the machine, including on the dozer blade, eliminating the need to tie straps or chains across the tracks. The dozer blade design has been improved, with a revised curvature for improved roll performance. Pivot pins feature pin-end greasing, making it easier to service and all plated surfaces are angled to minimise spoil retention. Dozer ram hoses now pass through bulkhead connectors, mounted on the outside of the undercarriage, making it easier to replace them in the event of accidental damage. Optional dozer float and a four-way dozer are now offered. Dig-end geometry has been revised to improve lifting and loading performance. A single 2,450mm main boom is used on both machines and there are two dipper arm options available. A 1,300mm dipper can be supplied with a standard counterweight, while a 1,600mm dipper can be fitted when the machine is equipped with an additional 246kg heavy counterweight. Graphite impregnated bronze bushes have extended greasing intervals on the digging and dozing equipment to 500 hours and the heavyduty bushed kingpost now comes with rebushable pivots, to boost service life. The dipper arms are thumb-ready

Powerscreen reveals battery powered screener in response to decarbonisation challenge Powerscreen, a leading provider of mobile crushing and screening equipment, is responding to the decarbonisation challenge by providing solutions that work towards minimised environmental impact and greater sustainability. Powerscreen’s decarbonisation story began with the introduction of the concept of mobile crushing and screening, has evolved to increase fuel efficiency and looks to the future with the company’s
electrification strategy. This includes an exciting new concept for the future of crushing and screening—the Eco-Warrior battery powered screener. Neil Robinson, Powerscreen Product and Applications Manager said: “Some may view this topic as a recent trend, but for Powerscreen, decarbonisation is multifaceted and has always been at our core. “The Powerscreen mobile concept has always contributed towards decreasing the
carbon footprint per tonne of material produced. This is done by reducing unnecessary handling, loading and hauling material to static plants in aggregate production or in the ability to recycle and reuse material at point of use, for example in roadbuilding projects where sub-base material is produced in-situ. “Using stockpiling conveyors as part of a track mobile setup is another perfect example of how to cut out

unnecessary double handling, reducing fuel consumption and carbon production.” Powerscreen has evolved its range to reduce environmental impact by making its crushing and screening equipment as fuel efficient as possible, using direct drive systems for its crushing range and improving engine capabilities and driveline design for its screening range. Robinson said: “Direct drive systems are proven to be 13 to 18 per cent more fuel efficient when compared with hydrostatic, resulting in significantly less carbon emissions. “Improvements to our screening range have reduced engine speeds from 2,200 rpm to 1,800 rpm, which not only means cleaner engines with less emissions, but also reduced fuel usage and therefore carbon produced. For example, a typical mid-size screener running at 1,000 hours per year, has a fuel usage reduction of approximately 450 litres, which equates to 1.2 tonnes less of carbon produced annually.”
3
FUEL EFFICIENCY • Drive-Train Design: engine technologies and machine innovations for reduced fuel usage • Telematics: actionable data for most fuel-efficient operation
4 www.diggers.live
Another important tool for fuel efficiency is Powerscreen Pulse, in-depth machine telematics that help customers see how and where their machines are being operated, understand fuel consumption and carry out fault-finding activities to ensure optimised performance. Robinson said: “Powerscreen was the first mobile crushing and screening manufacturer to offer in-depth machine telematics with the launch of Powerscreen Pulse in 2013. In the early days, it generated a large volume of data, but now our system has been refined to deliver actionable information with customised reports and suggested actions for more fuel-efficient operation.” Electrification is currently a key focus of the Powerscreen decarbonisation strategy. The Powerscreen Hybrid range, designed to give customers alternative energy options to operate their range of crushing, screening and conveying equipment, has been dramatically
ELECTRIFICATION • Powerscreen Hybrid models: alternative power train options • Future: Eco-Warrior battery powered screener
enhanced to include more fully electric crushers and screeners as well as models powered by innovative combinations of diesel and electricity. These options enable customers to choose which fuel to use depending on cost, location and availability. They are of particular benefit to customers who operate in areas where electricity is more cost effective than diesel, where diesel engine noise is unwanted or on sites where electricity is the preferred energy source. Robinson said: “Customers using Powerscreen Hybrid units powered off the grid have been able to reduce onsite carbon emissions by 57 per cent per tonne of material produced. While our hybrid customers have traditionally been in environmentally conscious countries and states, where legislation or financial incentives are more focused on green energy, we are witnessing a significant uptake in non-traditional locations, as customers prepare to comply with increased government drives for carbon neutrality.” Powerscreen continues to spearhead the industry’s drive for decarbonisation and a clear demonstration of this is a brand-new concept for the future of crushing and screening—the Eco-Warrior battery powered screener. The Eco-Warrior battery powered screener has been designed using top of the range, highly efficient drives and intelligent control systems to deliver powerful screening action. This self-charging or plug-in model features a simple, quiet engine with no after-treatment requirements. The engine size has been cut in half compared with the diesel hydraulic unit and the battery pack provides either emission-free running or a power boost. Robinson said: “To the best of our knowledge this is the first battery powered screener in the world and has been clocking up testing hours since it was built in 2019. It still delivers on the powerful screening action that Powerscreen machines are famous for and we are now exploring taking it from concept to mainstream. “This isn’t a publicity stunt; the drive for decarbonisation is real, with the UK, and other governments ruling that carbon emissions have to be reduced by 80 per cent by 2050. It’s critical that we dramatically reduce our carbon footprint and Powerscreen has many solutions available today in support of this. However, we’re not stopping there – we’re taking it to the next level, continuing to be the pioneers in adopting technology that supports the industry in meeting the requirements of government decarbonisation laws – this is the future.”

TrackGrip product profile The ability to operate in steep or hazardous areas is critical to working safely and productively in industries using ground engaging tools – when an excavator along with its operator starts to slide uncontrollably, it’s too late. You cannot put a price on safety. In many cases, companies have been forced to cease operations due to unstable conditions as they felt the risk of an accident was extremely high. Until they ordered TrackGrips, that is.
So, what are TrackGrips?
TrackGrips are fitted to ground engaging tools to improve traction, stability and safety when working on steep, muddy, wet, grassy, frosty or snowy slopes. In other words, they allow you to work in previously inaccessible locations and unworkable weather conditions. They can also save on fuel. Manufactured in New Zealand and imported by NY Forestry, TrackGrips are made from high grade Bisplate – equivalent to Hardox in the UK. They are placed every fifth grouser, have a castellated top, sit 80mm above the grouser and take less than a minute to fit. If you are harvesting, mounding, mulching, shearing, digging drainage or laying pipelines on snowy, icy, wet slippery surfaces, fit Track-Grips and get the whole job completed in good time – and safely.
Some comments from TrackGrip users: Ben Miller, BM Excavation I bit the bullet and bought a set of TrackGrips for the 160. After using them on the 140 for a number of years, there was only one call to make. They ensure maximum safety for our operators and a big increase in productivity on steep/greasy ground. L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage Tony Honicke from Core Groundworks came to us with a tricky job in tricky conditions, along with his own solution – TrackGrips. Working for Mick George on the Gedling Bypass (a Balfour Beatty site), Tony wasn’t going to let wet, slippery conditions stop him commencing essential drainage works. Thank you to Steve Curzon at NY Forestry for providing the TrackGrip products Tony requested. This is the first time we have used Trackgrips. They don’t disappoint. Michael Lee, Michael Lee Agricultural Services. Devon What a fool I have been, I should have

bought these grips years ago. They are allowing me to continue working on relatively steep ground even with all this rain. Without them I would have had to stop; now I have hardly any slip and greatly improved safety. I tracked up a bank with no slip and stayed there even when swinging big bushes around on a slope too steep for a tractor, which was why the hedge had never been cut. JW Hodge Forestry I was working above the A1 mulching gorse when I was suddenly caught out on wet grass, slipped and found myself teetering over the road – a terrifying moment. No matter what I did the machine wasn’t going to move away from the hill. I therefore returned to the yard and picked up my TrackGrips and fitted them to the front of the track, this allowed the machine to get a grip and move away from the hill. This action alone paid for the TrackGrips as the recovery costs would have been thousands of pounds. The attachments saved my life. Thanks Steve.

Manitou offers new dedicated solutions for construction At an online event titled BUILD THE FUTURE and attended by Diggers LIVE, Manitou Group unveiled the new segments in its construction range, with new compact fixed and ultra-compact telehandlers as well as new articulated loaders. The group also ushered in a complete overhaul and extension of its range of rotating telehandlers.
Fully redesigned MRT rotating telehandlers
Manitou has renamed its two ranges VISION and VISION+ to bring clarity to its range of rotating telehandlers, with the MRT 1645 and MRT 1845 new additions to the VISION range. They have 500 kg greater load capacity than their predecessors, lifting heights of 16 metres and 18 metres respectively for a load of 4.5 tonnes and new Stage V engines, producing 75 hp and 116 hp respectively. The highest capacities are found in the VISION+ range, which features 12 new models. The range has been completely revamped with six new products: MRT 2260, MRT 2660, MRT 3570, MRT 2570 and MRT 3060. With models offering a lifting height of 22 to 35 metres and a much improved capacity of up to seven tonnes, this range is ideal for the installation of structural steelwork, renovation of buildings and even demolition. The VISION and VISION+ ranges are now available worldwide and will be delivered to the dealer network, to rentals and to key accounts by September 2021. The VISION name was chosen to convey the idea of in-cab visibility. A reinforced, gridless roof certified to ROPS/FOPS level 2 is available as an option for closely monitoring loading operations at height. The pressurised cab on all VISION and VISION+

models guarantees a healthy working environment and additional sound insulation. Another innovation is an optional driving remote control for operating the machine from the basket or outside the machine. As a result, it is possible to move it safely without having to return to the driver’s cab, saving precious time on site. The new Stage V engine also helps to reduce fuel consumption and lifting capacities and load charts have been significantly improved, most notably the capacity at maximum height by up to 100 per cent and at maximum reach by up to 25 per cent. Weight has been reduced by more than five per cent while load capacity has been increased by up to 15 per cent. Innovation is in Manitou’s DNA, and 21 patents were filed in the design of these two new MRT VISION and VISION+ ranges. Five LED headlamps ensure full lighting all around the machine, plus two boom head worklights for excellent visibility during loading operations at height. A rear camera sends images to the cab, allowing the machine to be manoeuvred in complete confidence. Accesses built into the chassis on the left, right, front and rear enable the operator to climb in and out of the machine regardless of its rotation. The new eight-inch vertical touchscreen on the VISION range, which comes in a 12.1-inch version on the VISION+ range, is a human-machine interface that rivals anything in the automotive sector. The VISION and VISION+ ranges also feature hydrostatic transmission offering greater driving flexibility and giving the operator a maximum speed of 40 km/h. The latest addition to the VISION+ range, the MRT 3570 allows the operator
The Manitou MRT 1845 to carry out handling operations up to 35 metres and for increased visibility at this height, Manitou has introduced a new electric seat that tilts by up to 18 degrees to easily monitor deployment of the boom. Manitou will be offering a full electric extension to the VISION+ range by the end of the year, as well as a hybrid version combining a smaller engine with a lithium-ion battery.

three new models, the MT 730 H, the MT 930 H, and the MT 930 HA (with platform basket), the Manitou brand is clearly responding to strong demand from rentals and dealers for compact machines with space on urban construction sites becoming increasingly limited. These compact sizes, two metres wide by two metres high, have a broad selection of equipment. In the cab, the intuitive Harmony screen, with a display available in 22 languages, gives the operator real-time maintenance and usage notifications. This easy-to-use universal dashboard makes it quick to get to grips with and ensures the safety of both the operator and the machine.

A new boom with built-in cylinder offers greater visibility for enhanced safety during loading and unloading. With their small size, these three models are easy to transport and can therefore be quickly delivered from site to site. A fork mounting system on the carriage has been designed to further optimise the length of the machine with attachment, reducing transport costs. To guarantee precise and flexible movements, these innovative products have a hydrostatic transmission and a 75 hp engine. The three models are now available to order worldwide and will be delivered throughout the dealer network and to rentals and key accounts from September 2021. To meet the requirements of restricted or indoor construction sites, these three telehandlers can be equipped as an option with the Safety Pack for optimum safety. This device supports and protects the operator and his or her environment. It warns on-site teams and feeds data back to the fleet manager. Any inappropriate behaviour such as movement of the machine with the boom raised, the seat belt not being fastened, temporary activation of movement cutoff, is identified by sensors activating two flashing lights inside and outside the cab. To avoid any inadvertent movement, the JSM now detects the operator’s hand to carry out hydraulic movements. Another detection tool, a reversing aid, informs the operator if there is anybody behind the telehandler. No-step access to the cab provides risk-free entry and exit and an automatic parking brake with hill start assist also helps to reduce the risk of accidents. With a capacity of three tonnes, the MT 730, MT 930 and MT 930 HA models are perfectly suited to residential construction/renovation work, whether for private homes or buildings with up to two storeys. These models also have a new floating fork carriage (CAF 1000/3 LB) with forks that fold up to make traveling on the road and towing safer and easier. A new compact bucket (BGP 2000/800) with 800-litre capacity, specially designed by Manitou for these models, allows safe movement of loose material with a maximum density of 2,100 kg/m3.
at the end of 2021. Previewed at the BUILD THE FUTURE event, these ULM (Ultra-Light Manitou) models boast a weight of just 2,700 kg with standard attachment and can therefore be transported on a regular trailer with no specific permit required. They will be delivered to the dealer network, rentals and key accounts in early 2022. Manitou Group is also revamping and
extending its range of articulated loaders. Available with Stage V engines for Europe and Final Tier IV engines for the US, the machines feature a new design, and innovations including reduced width, optimised hydrostatic transmission and lower Total Cost of Ownership. These new models will be distributed within the dealer network, to hirers and to key accounts by the end of 2021.

Going for growth In the first quarter of this year, Paragon Bank doubled its construction finance team with the appointments of Todd Auger, Chris Shaw and Kelly Matthews. The three new business development managers will not only boost Paragon’s presence across key regions but bring with them 30 years’ combined sector experience
Todd

Kelly 72
DIGGERSLIVE
Tell us about your background in and out of work.
Todd: I have always worked in the business banking sector. I began my career with NatWest/ Lombard 14 years ago, starting as an assistant for local business banking relationship managers and then working my way up to a senior relationship manager role, covering all sorts of different sectors and large SME businesses. My last role before Paragon was with Komatsu Finance where I serviced nationwide construction businesses. Outside of work, I love playing football, although lockdown has meant I’ve played less than I would have liked. I also have two children, 13 and 10 (nearly 11), who keep me entertained and busy. Kelly: I started my career in the finance industry with BNP Paribas in 2006, initially looking after brokers. This gave me an insight and the correct training to set up a desk taking business direct from dealers and customers. After seven years with my first employer I moved on to join Société Générale in an external sales role working with a large construction manufacturer, while also building business relationships with other dealers within the construction market.
Having then taken five years out of the finance industry to travel Asia and have a family, I was keen to get back into the industry I enjoy, and joined Paragon to fulfil that goal. Chris: I started my professional career as a maths teacher, which I did for five years before making the transition into the world of finance. I originally worked for Close Brothers in 2015 for their asset finance manufacturing division before making the change over to JCB finance in 2018. I then came across the role at Paragon and thought it looked like an excellent fit. So far that has proved to be the case. Out of work I’m a dad to two small kids so that takes up most of my free time. With what little I have left, I am a keen golfer and try to play as often as I can.
How has your career experience led to your position in Paragon Bank?
Todd: My asset finance background and knowledge within the construction sector has meant that this role within Paragon is a natural fit for me. Chris: I got a great understanding of the whole asset finance cycle in my first role, from deal inception all the way through to collections. Once I coupled this with experience at my last role, I felt it was a natural fit at Paragon.
What attracts you to using your skills in construction finance?
Kelly: I enjoy building relationships within the construction industry and find
www.diggers.live
INTERVIEW
the individuals in the sector a great bunch of people who are very down to earth. Todd: The best part of my role is meeting new business owners and developing a strong understanding of their enterprise. I’ve always wanted to add value in any interaction with customers and with the backing of such a diverse bank, this is certainly an area we can excel in. This is an exciting time for the construction sector and to provide the support to allow businesses to grow is a privilege.
What do you look forward to doing working at Paragon?
Chris: Continuing to build on a solid foundation so far, working with a really supportive team and getting some money out of the door. Kelly: I look forward to supporting the businesses within the construction sector grow and build their business along with growing Paragon as a lender. The construction industry is paramount to the growth of the economy. Todd: There are clear aspirations for Paragon to grow within the asset finance space, which is a really exciting journey to be involved in.
What’s the most challenging part of your job? Todd: The most challenging part of the job is potentially the most rewarding and that is developing a completely new relationship with a business that you haven’t worked with before. There is no right or wrong way and no formula that guarantees success in this space. Just determination, tenacity and professionalism. Sometimes you can secure a new deal within a few months of initial contact, other times it can take years.
Kelly: I second that – we all work very well together already and I very much look forward to meeting Chris and Todd in person, and to continue supporting each other to grow the construction finance division.
How will you be helping companies in the sector develop their businesses? Kelly: We help support dealers and manufacturers grow by understanding their business inside out, providing finance opportunities to enable it to succeed.
Todd: First and foremost, we want to really understand their aspirations for the future. This will allow Paragon to become a true working partner to the business rather than ‘another funder’. Chris: We pride ourselves on putting a really good deal together and can provide the customer with a myriad of different options and ways of doing things that is exactly tailored to the way they want to run their business and fund their assets. I think this gives us a strong USP in the marketplace.
What do businesses need to demonstrate to you to qualify for finance? Todd: Talk to us. Paragon really are open for business and are passionate to help customers grow within the construction sector.
Chris: It’s helpful when a customer conveys the bigger picture – we will want to get a thorough understanding of how their business works.
What makes a great job?
Todd: Getting the basics right. Complex deals can result in longer lead times, more
challenging conversations etc. However, getting the fundamentals right can make all the difference. This can be as simple as keeping a customer and supplier informed of progress. Chris: Definitely having a great team around you. Kelly: Teamwork and support from management. I really enjoy building relationships while knowing I have made a difference to the success of a business.
What is your career ambition? Kelly: To grow my client base and succeed with supporting Paragon’s growth as a funder.
Chris: I’d quite like to move into a senior management role in the future. I know that may well be a few years off, but it’s certainly an aspiration of mine.
What piece of advice would you give to a younger you?
Chris: Make the most of your free time. You have more now than you think. Kelly: Be a free spirit enjoy your free time and do everything you want before having a family. Never have any regrets.
Do you have a bucket list activity?
Todd: Not necessarily – although I am working my way through a bucket list of 100 books to read before you die. Chris: American golf course road trip. I have a lot of bucket list golf courses I’d love to get the opportunity to play out there. Kelly: To enjoy seeing the world and show my son who is four as many adventures as possible.
Kelly: Juggling all aspects of the role and building internal relationships while we are all working from home during this pandemic.
How do you expect to be working with your fellow new recruits?
Chris: We’re already a close team, we speak most days and work really well together to help each out and discuss the best ways to take on the market.

CPA Conference 2021: Net zero carbon and digitalisation, the challenge for the plant sector Six months prior to the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) Conference 2021, the CPA has announced that the theme of the conference will be Net Zero Carbon and Digitalisation: The Challenge of Change for the Plant Sector. Plans are in place to hold the event live at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Fillongley near Coventry on Thursday 14 October 2021. The conference is a one day event organised by the CPA, the UK’s leading trade association for the plant-hire sector. The organisation has more than 1,700 members, who supply 85 per cent of hired plant to the UK construction industry. This year’s CPA Conference will mark the sixth time the event has been held. The headline sponsor is Point of Rental Software and confirmed exhibitors already include Genquip Groundhog and NOCN Group. Over the years, the CPA Conference has become established as an essential entry in the calendar for senior figures in the plant hire sector. Previous speakers have included representatives from clients such as HS2 and Highways England, contractors such as Skanska and Laing O’Rourke, major plant hire companies and other bodies such as the police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). CPA Chief Executive Kevin Minton said: “In our dealings with

CPA members and the wider industry, there are two key themes that always emerge as having a great impact on the future of our sector – striving to achieve net zero carbon and digitalisation. We thought it best to shine the spotlight on these two key topics and one will be addressed in the morning and the other in the afternoon of the conference. “The construction industry has played a critical role in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, helping support vital infrastructure, building the Nightingale Hospitals and driving economic growth at a time when other sectors were forced to close. Now as we look to the future, the government’s plans to ‘Build Back Better’ confirms the role of construction in the postpandemic economy. “The event will combine keynote speeches with panel debates and
interactive discussion, and it will be designed to allow delegates to come away with better insight about how they can prepare their businesses in the post-COVID age. “The intent is to hold the event live with all relevant COVID-19 guidelines adhered to, and we are also looking into bringing a virtual element to the conference for those who may not be able to attend in person. We’re also continuing with the CPA webinar programme over the next few months to address some other topics of immediate relevance and concern leading up to the conference.” The 2021 CPA Conference will be hosted by Merryn Myatt, who hosted the event in 2019 and introduced a new format with a series of panel speakers. Merryn is a former television newsreader, presenter and journalist, including being senior presenter on The Money Channel. Merryn will encourage debate and audience interaction through a series of panel discussions with key people from across the industry. Details of the webinars will be announced on the CPA website at www.cpa.uk.net. If you would like to attend, please send an email to enquiries@cpa.uk.net. Delegate tickets will also be available to purchase on the CPA website in the coming months. The equipment KAHL used for the operation was a P 1+1/2 split combination, meaning with one module divided lengthwise and coupled parallel to a second full module. This combination offered greater stability than a single-width transporter on the one hand and required less space than a double-width P 1+1 combination on the other. Each 12-axle unit was powered by a high-performance 490 hp powerpack. With the 658-tonne load lashed to the two one-and-a-half width transporter combinations, it was quite a feat to negotiate the three 90 degree turns with a total train length of more than 50 metres and a width of 6.43 metres.
Careful manoeuvring was necessary to avoid the obstacles that were presented, such as silos, walls and lighting fixtures. With electronic steering on all axles and travel speed reduced to snail’s pace, the experts successfully guided the train through all the narrow sections of the route. Handling such transport operations without a turntable called for meticulous preparation and lots of experience, something the team at KAHL and PIEPER demonstrate on a daily basis. So, in spite of all the difficulties, the cargo reached its destination in good time and the transporter was able to sail on schedule. The operating crew had to keep a watchful eye on the steering angle on the two self-propelled module combinations, as the cargo constituted a rigid connection between them.

North Wales startup buys more than 20 Bobcats EMY Plant Hire, a startup rental business based in Wrexham in North Wales, has bought more than 20 new machines of all types from the full-liner range offered by Bobcat. The new Bobcat mini-excavators, compact loaders, telehandlers and attachments available to rent from EMY Plant Hire were supplied by Norwest Plant Ltd, the local Authorised Bobcat Dealer. EMY Plant Hire was founded by directors, Emily Roberts and Andrew Dickens, concentrating first on the local area, including North Wales, Cheshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire, before looking to eventually operate nationwide. As well as general plant and other products for users in diverse markets such as construction, landscaping, utilities and agriculture, EMY Plant Hire was formed to offer more unusual and specialist products to its wide customer base. To illustrate this, the company is one of the first rental businesses in the UK to offer the articulated version of the Bobcat E85 8.5 tonne mini-excavator. Emily Roberts said: “At EMY Plant Hire, we are fully committed to offering a first class rental service for our customers, but we would also like to offer more unusual and innovative products for hire. We are one of the first rental companies to offer the articulated boom version of

the E85, which is an unusual feature in the UK market, where the preference is for straight boom models. The articulated boom allows users to bring the arm on the E85 closer and to reach a lot higher, potentially providing them with a larger working range. “We are also targeting specialist areas such as the tree surgery and forestry markets. By offering both the conventional and the leading edge, we have much to offer not only our own customer base but also by cross-hire through other rental and contractor companies. We have already laid the ground for these relationships and feel very positive about the local market and beyond.” As well as the E85, Norwest Plant has delivered a further 13 Bobcat miniexcavators including four E10z one-tonne, two E17z 1.7 tonne and eight more
models above two tonnes, including E20z, E26 and E45 models. With the machines from Norwest Plant, EMY Plant Hire is also offering Bobcat S100 and S450 skid-steer loaders and a Bobcat T450 compact track loader. Alongside these are the seven-metre TL30.70 and 18-metre T40.180SLP Bobcat telehandlers and seven different Bobcat attachments including pallet forks, an auger and buckets. Garry Wheawall of Norwest Plant, based in Wigan in Lancashire, said: “We are very impressed with the innovation being shown by EMY Plant Hire. Even during the last 12 months of the pandemic, rental companies have continued to operate, and in some places have been flat out. I think this is a good time for EMY to enter the market, offering a broader set of products and solutions for customers.”

Hirst Brothers Contractors Ltd of York has taken delivery of new Bobcat E27 and E85 mini-excavators. Jointly run by Directors, Edd and Tom Hirst, the company provides a comprehensive range of services, including site clearance, tree surgery, estate management, forestry, fencing and excavation. The company works nationwide and has a growing list of prestigious clients including Network Rail, which owns, operates and develops Britain’s railway infrastructure.
Providing the muscle we need
New Bobcat excavators increase versatility for Hirst Brothers
Edd Hirst said: “The new E27 and E85 are not only providing us with the muscle we need for our work but also the additional flexibility required in the areas in which we operate. The new machines allow us to gain access to and to work in the tight confines of many of our worksites, including the trackside contracts for Network Rail. They can also be combined with different attachments to widen the range of applications we can carry out. “Supplied by Grays Machinery Ltd, based in Bedale, our local Authorised Bobcat Dealer, the new E85 8.5 tonne excavator has been supplied with an articulated boom, an unusual feature for the UK market, where the preference is for straight boom models. “The articulated boom allows us to bring the arm on the E85 closer to the machine and to reach a lot higher, providing us with a larger working range so we can accomplish even more in tight areas. With its bigger engine and oil pump, the E27 2.7 tonne excavator gives us the extra power needed for the difficult jobs, such as working with a flail mower attachment in thick brambles.” The Bobcat E85 is a reduced tail swing (RTS) mini-excavator powered by the Yanmar 4TNV98C-VDB8 diesel engine providing 44.3 kW of power at 2,100 rpm. Complementing the 10 per cent increase in power over the previous E80 model, the E85 excavator offers a much higher fuel efficiency, which is among the best on the market. The bucket digging force in the E85 has also been significantly increased to 61.8 kN, a 13 per cent increase over the E80.
Dual auxiliary hydraulic lines
The E85 is standard equipped with primary and secondary auxiliary hydraulic lines offering both dual directional and proportional flow for increased versatility when using the fivefingered grapple attachments favoured by Hirst Brothers.

Edd Hirst said: “We have added a number of bespoke features to the E85 for added protection in the harsh environments we can work in. These include a new high level winch system that enables you to use a grab at the same time and winch from a higher point avoiding snags. They have also added custom-made, user friendly forestry cab guarding, extra side and bonnet protection and additional LED work lighting and flashing strobes. “The new E85 was meant to replace an existing Bobcat E80 mini-excavator we’ve had for a number of years, but we have been so busy that we are still using the E80 on our contracts. This is a long arm version, which provides a nice complement to the new Bobcat excavators.” Like the E85 mini excavator, primary and secondary auxiliary hydraulic lines are a standard feature of the conventional swing E27 R-series model, which introduces an in-class unique combination of superior stability, class leading digging performance and breakout forces, together with a transport weight that is still below the weight limits for appropriate trailers. The E27 offers just 280 mm of tail overhang, which

DCV Engineering expands Doosan excavator fleet With headquarters in Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, plant hire business DCV Engineering has expanded the company’s rental fleet with the purchase of four DX140LCR-5 15.5-tonne and two DX225LC-5 22.1-tonne crawler excavators from Doosan. Supplied by Pioneer Plant Ltd, the Leicester-based Authorised Doosan dealer, the new DX140LCR-5 and DX225LC-5 models are now part of a comprehensive fleet of excavators available from DCV Engineering, covering all sizes from one to 30 tonnes. David Venn, Joint Managing Director of DCV Engineering, said: “After a steady start to the year, the rental market is really beginning to pick up and we have purchased the new
Doosan excavators from Pioneer Plant to expand our fleet to meet this demand. “Since we purchased our first Doosan excavator in 2014, a DX225LC-3 model, we have continued to choose the Doosan brand, owing to its excellent quality, reliability, performance and residual prices. Coupled with the excellent service provided by Pioneer Plant, it is not surprising that we have continued to purchase Doosan excavators and wheel loaders.” Joining a rental fleet comprising well over 500 pieces of equipment for hire, the selection of Doosan excavators available from DCV Engineering starts with the smallest model in the Doosan range, the one tonne DX10Z miniexcavator.
Nationwide hire service
With its central location and connections to major roads such as the M1, M6, A45 and A14, DCV Engineering provides a nationwide service. As well as selfdrive and operated plant hire, the company offers road sweeping and access equipment and has a large telehandler fleet. The company also has specialised knowledge and experience of the recycling industry, with a wide variety of mobile waste recycling equipment for hire, including crushers, trommel screens and deck screens. Other members of our staff are also fully trained with HGV licences so they can help out with deliveries if necessary. We are a family company and this is indicative of the extensive training we want to provide for our staff – DCV Engineering believes very strongly in investing in our people.” Since the company was established in 2001, DCV Engineering has achieved considerable year on year growth. This has been achieved by offering a large, modern stock at highly competitive rates, backed by excellent customer service. tail swing model provides a six per cent increase in power and a three per cent increase in torque over its predecessor. With a focus on greater power, robustness and versatility, the DX140LCR-5 is powered by the Perkins 4.5 engine. Swing torque has also been boosted by 28 per cent. In addition to the efficient engine, new systems and functions have been incorporated to reduce fuel consumption by up to 10 per cent compared to the previous generation. The Doosan DX225LC-5 crawler excavator is powered by the well-proven six cylinder, turbocharged Doosan DL06P water-cooled diesel engine, providing an output of 124 kW at 1,800 rpm. The DX225LC-5 combines power with high torque at lower revolutions, ensuring greater reliability over time than other 21-tonne machines, which have four-cylinder engines running at much higher revs. David Venn said: “The residuals are part of the excellent low cost of ownership offered by the Doosan range of construction equipment. The outstanding service/parts support Pioneer Plant and Doosan provide is also crucial. We expect the same and better support from our suppliers than that we provide for our customers.”
More than 40 years’ experience
Pioneer Plant is the Authorised Doosan Dealer for Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire and the PE and NG postcode areas of South Lincolnshire. The company is solely responsible for sales and servicing of the Doosan crawler, wheeled and mini/midi excavator, wheel loader, articulated dump truck and attachment ranges in its area. Specialist Trailer Hire (STH) places trust in Goldhofer In response to the increased demand for Goldhofer’s semi-trailers and heavy-duty modular systems, the German company has joined forces with a new sales and service partner. Specialist Trailer Hire, with depots in Leeds and Rotherham, is initially adding 16 of Goldhofer’s new STEPSTAR self-tracking semi-trailers to its rental fleet. In addition, STH has a comprehensive service offering covering all aspects of maintenance and repair for Goldhofer vehicles. STH Director Mark Liversidge said: “With Goldhofer, we now have a partner with global experience at our side and top-quality, cost-effective transport solutions in our portfolio. This enables us to deliver reliability, flexibility and long service life on attractive terms. And that is precisely what our customers are looking for.” The addition of 16 STEPSTAR semi-trailers to its fleet seals the new partnership with Goldhofer for Specialist Trailer Hire – and will shortly give STH’s extensive customer base access to the self-tracking semitrailers in the three-axle version with two-piece hydraulic ramps. They are ideal for transporting almost all self-propelled loads and ensure fast and easy loading and unloading of the goods and machines. The vehicles, which come with a choice of tyre size and frame options, are in the payload range of 30 to 45 tonnes. User-friendliness, practical
accessories, TraffideckGo low-wear anti-slip polymer decking and an intelligent lashing system are the hallmarks of the STEPSTAR models, as is their long and wide excavator boom recess. The 16 STEPSTAR semi-trailers include six plant trailers, i.e. threeaxle non-extending semitrailers designed especially for transporting construction machinery on the UK market. This version is in great demand for major engineering programmes such as the UK’s HS2, due to its very low deadweight and resulting higher payload in the Cat 1 permit category. Mark Howe, Sales Manager UK Goldhofer said: “The Plant Trailer gives us a practical universal semitrailer for our customers. They benefit from a large number of advantages in terms of functionality and an impressive payload-to-deadweight ratio. The bottom line is significantly greater efficiency and more economical operations.” Robert Steinhauser, Director of Sales Europe/Africa at Goldhofer AG, said: “With STH, we now have a strong partner in a great central location, with a proven track record in terms of technical knowhow and many years of experience in the industry. This guarantees renters and owners of Goldhofer transport systems full and fast professional service – including training – in the UK.”

Wheel loader deployment for USUM Recycling
Enhanced operator comfort
The new cab is quiet, safe and 10 per cent larger, with roll-over protective (ROPS) and falling-object protective (FOPS) structures. Climate control is an indispensable feature for, frankly, smelly recycling operations and the HL965 wheel loader deals with this through its SEKA protective ventilation system. That system isn’t required on the HL940A because the machine has the latest-generation cabin technology, however, USUM decided to add it to their new Hyundai in order to take the comfort of their operators to the next level. The fully adjustable driver’s seat provides a pleasant, ergonomic workplace and the electro-hydraulic joystick allows easy control of the accessories, increasing productivity and reducing fatigue. Stateof-the-art noise reduction technology and soundproofing make the Hyundai perfect for working in noisy environments such as gravel pits and waste dumps.
Infotainment system
USUM group produces compost for agricultural use, soil, mineral potash fertiliser and recyclable materials from construction site waste. Since September 2020, the company has been using a new 20-tonne Hyundai HL965 wheel loader with 201 kW net power and 3.5-cubicmetre bucket. It also has a new 13-tonne HL940A, with 116 kW net power and 2.5-cubic-metre bucket. Both wheel loaders are used for assembling and turning compost piles, loading recyclable materials onto trucks and general loading operations and cleaning work. Manager, Sven Heinisch, bought the custom-fitted wheel loaders from the Hyundai dealership Tecklenborg Baumaschinen, which also takes charge of all loader service and repair work. Heinisch said: “The 45 per cent subsidy we received from a programme for reducing CO2 emissions enabled us to buy these modern, highly economical Hyundai wheel loaders, and trade in two very old vehicles.”
Economy
HL-series vehicles’ low fuel consumption of around six litres per hour, is a winning
84
DIGGERSLIVE
factor. Operators can set a speed limit anywhere between 20 and 40 km/h and automatic engine shutdown after a user-set period keeps fuel consumption and emissions under strict control. The standard five-speed transmission with direct-drive clutch further reduces fuel consumption. The ECO accelerator pedal distinguishes between economy operation and power operation, with fuel consumption in economy mode significantly lower. An ECO gauge frequently checks conditions, changing colour according to motor torque and fuel efficiency. Average and total fuel consumption are also displayed on the monitor.
Intelligent Clutch Cut-Off (ICCO)
In the H mode, the Intelligent Clutch Cut-Off (ICCO) reduces the power that would otherwise be lost at the torque converter. The lower heat production through ICCO is of overall benefit to the fuel economy. The hydraulic limitedslip differential increases productivity as well as having a fuel-saving effect by preventing tyre slip.
The new, larger seven-inch monitor is similar to a smartphone display. The audio system, including the radio, has an integrated Bluetooth hands-free device and a built-in microphone with which the driver in the cab can make and receive phone calls. The infotainment system also offers the Miracast wireless communication standard, which enables the operator to use the WLAN of his or her smartphone to put the functions of the mobile phone on the large screen – including navigation, internet access and playing videos and music.
Soft end stop
The touchscreen monitor and electrohydraulically controlled levers are used to adjust the soft end stop, bucket priority and stop position for the boom arms and bucket. The soft end stop reduces vibrations when an attachment approaches the end of its travel and provides impact-free “arrival” by automatically reducing its speed at this point. This function can be deactivated at the monitor.
Precision weighing system
All models of the HL900 series are fitted with a weighing system. This system offers automatic and manual settings and weighs individual bucket loads and total load weights within an accuracy range of plus or minus one per cent.

Doosan DX350LC-7 excavator adds power in Czech quarry
everything that was promised with the new DX350LC-7 has turned out exactly as they said.” The warranty protection on the DX350LC-7 model is three years/5,000 hours as standard, but thanks to the long-term relationship between the two companies, GARNEA has agreed to an extended warranty cover of five years/10,000 hours.
High tonnages, precise work
Excavators in the Ruprechtice quarry come into play after controlled blasting has finished. After blasting, blocks of granite weighing from 100 to 3,000 kg are selected and the larger pieces are reduced in size using the excavator equipped with a hydraulic breaker. The blocks are moved and further divided using a splitter on an excavator, but for more precise work splitting is done manually. Where the potential for material quality is greatest, entire blocks are transported out of the quarry and worked on with a saw. Svoboda said: “These blocks weigh between five and 15 tonnes, so the power of the machine is therefore a big plus for us.”
Less burden on the environment
A new Doosan DX350LC-7 Stage V compliant excavator has increased power and fuel efficiency at Ruprechtice granite quarry in northern Bohemia, one of several owned and operated by LIGRANIT a.s. The DX350LC-7 excavator was supplied by GARNEA a.s, the Authorised Dealer for the Doosan range in the Czech Republic. The Ruprechtice quarry in Liberec dates back to 1910. Over the years, it has been owned by the famous stonemason, Josef Lange, and by the Liebig family. It became the property of the state until 1992, when it was acquired by private company, LIGRANIT. The quarry specialises in the extraction and sale of Czech granites that architects and sculptors at home and abroad regularly specify in their designs. Radek Svoboda, Production Manager at LIGRANIT said: “Over the last 10 years, quarrying has changed in terms of processing granite blocks. Previously, everything was done by hand. Today it is mainly carried out with the latest machinery and technology.”

Selected for extreme loads
According to LIGRANIT, the processing of granite blocks requires machines that are both powerful and efficient – precisely the requirements met by the new Doosan DX350LC-7 excavator. The key parameters included an emphasis on exceptional performance, low fuel consumption, operator comfort and environmental friendliness. Svoboda said: “We purchased the new Doosan machine for its power and low fuel consumption. Of course, the length of the warranties and the service from [Authorised Dealer] GARNEA are also important factors.” Another factor supporting the purchase of the DX350LC-7 was the excellent service record of a smaller Doosan DX140LC-5 excavator that LIGRANIT already owned. The Stage V compliance of the new DX350LC-7 also met the environmental standards required by LIGRANIT. But the most important factor was the excellent relationship with GARNEA. Svoboda said: “We negotiated with the management of GARNEA and
To meet the European Union Stage V engine emission regulations, the new DX350LC-7 excavator is powered by the latest generation Doosan DL08 diesel engine, providing 209 kW of power at 1,800 rpm. The DL08 engine offers a new solution that boosts the air available during combustion, increasing the temperature and greatly reducing the particulates produced; exceeding Stage V regulations without exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). This is combined with super-efficient DOC/DPF+SCR aftertreatment technology to ensure minimal emissions. Thanks to the new technology, maintenance of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has been greatly reduced, with no maintenance required until the machine has operated for 8,000 hours. With the DX350LC-7, Doosan has tried to ensure that productivity and environment protection are truly compatible. The enhanced fuel efficiency of the DL08 engine in combination with a new hydraulic main valve and the new generation SPC3 Smart Power Controls, provides increases in fuel efficiency of 10 per cent in the S mode and six per cent in the P+ mode when compared to the previous generation machine.
