EDITORIAL TEAM

WELCOME I’ll start with a bit of a confession. The day that the last issue of Diggers LIVE came out, I had my head massively turned. In association with another key industry title we produce, I hosted the 2021 British Demolition Awards. A few days later we attended the NFDC’s Demolition Expo then RWM (Recycling and Waste Management) and a contamination show, all alongside my calendar full of demolitionheavy of site visits. So my head hasn’t been fully in the construction equipment game. Thankfully, I have a strong team behind me to back me up. Editor Toby Wilsdon and Brand Manager Ben Cumberland have really taken this leviathan brand by the horns over the past two months in my semi-absence and with it have produced the Equipment Engagement feature with Ashley Ward of Warwick Ward (machinery) on page 24, the Business Insider interview with Martin Bestwick of InspHire (page 48), a wheel loader feature with CASE, DOOSAN and Hyundai (pages 34 to 42) and a dumper feature including JCB, Thwaites and Ecovolve (pages 56 to 64). I did manage to wear my Diggers LIVE hat at least once, and was treated royally by James Dodkins, Molson Group’s Marketing Manager, at the company’s superb open day earlier in September. You can read my review on pages 32 to 33. I mentioned the British Demolition Awards earlier. McCloskey, the principle sponsor of the event, has done us a great case study on reducing the social and environmental impact of construction projects in large cities (page 44). I’m certain we’ve continued with our positive and insightful approach in this industry over the past two months, maybe even eclipsed it. I can assure you that my focus will be equally on this sector as on all the others. That is if the Diggers team allow me back. Have a great Christmas and we will be back in January!

NEWS

An opportunity missed Suneeta Johal, CEO of the Construction Equipment Association reacts to Rishi Sunak’s October Budget The Chancellor’s pledge to invest in our economic infrastructure, innovation and skills were welcomed by the CEA… but there were many missed opportunities to help the manufacturing sector. The government revealed plans to invest £130 billion to connect our towns and cities, which seems like positive news for our sector, but failed to mention that much of this has already been on the agenda for months. In addition, there was no detail on the Integrated Rail Plan, which is disappointing. An £11.5 billion cash injection to build 180,000 affordable homes will boost business for both machinery manufacturers and plant hirers. The £1.8 billion pledged towards brownfield housing developments will make a real impact in making the UK more sustainable. While the Treasury’s announcement that it will be increasing spending by £3.8 billion to fund the skills revolution is welcomed, it’s not enough and fails to address just where the workforce will come from. CEA members report participation in the Kickstart Scheme has not yielded the expected number of apprentices and while funding apprentices and the new T-level scheme is positive, the government must be more proactive in steering young people into engineering and vocational training. The Chancellor also confirmed that £1.4 billion will be set aside for a Global Britain Investment Fund to attract foreign investment, which will have a particular focus on electric vehicles. While the CEA sees this as a way of encouraging additional investment in green construction projects to meet

6

DIGGERSLIVE

the government’s net-zero strategy and welcomes investments into battery technology, it is imperative that HMG understands that electrification of vehicles is not the only solution for reducing carbon emissions. Following a review, the government will reduce the burden of business rates in England by more than £7 billion over the next five years, and make the

system fairer, more responsive and more supportive of investment. Changes to business rates, including a new 12-month relief for companies to invest in their premises, means manufacturers can expand and improve without incurring increased costs. The target for hitting R&D spending will reach £22 billion by 2026-27, two years later than had been initially planned

Rupert Craven, Sales Director for Ritchie Bros UK gives his take on the Budget

– this is very disappointing and I don’t believe this investment is enough to maintain ‘superpower’ achievements. In summary, this budget is an opportunity missed for the UK’s manufacturing sector, with no measures to support business with sharply rising energy and steel costs, no commitment to supporting export, and no extension of the 130 per cent super deduction.

www.diggers.live

The continued investment in infrastructure is very important for the earthworks sector in particular as it gives businesses the confidence to invest in new, more fuel-efficient equipment. With carbon emissions, record fuel prices and the COP26 summit now underway, we are seeing many more businesses looking to dispose of older equipment before the end of the year. This is all about capitalising on the current high values, which continue to be achieved. Having cash to reinvest in

new fleets will be extremely important in 2022, especially for businesses looking to realise the benefits of the Super Deduction. It’s also now more important than ever to plan fleet changes for the red to white diesel transition in April 2022, as every drop will be more expensive. This is why we have just launched our free online Asset Valuator tool so that equipment owners can see what different assets are selling for right now, helping them to make more informed fleet disposal decisions.

NEWS

Good Cop Bad Cop The CEA presents its view of the COP26 Climate Summit, with product news from some of its members As the COP26 is underway, the CEA is committed to supporting our members on the journey to achieving net zero in the UK by 2050. Many of our member companies have already started their own roadmaps for reducing carbon emissions, however, it will be a collaborative effort to make to necessary changes to ‘save our planet’, and this will of course take some time to achieve. CEA member company Hitachi Construction Machinery UK Ltd has sustainability high on its agenda and the company’s parent group, Hitachi Ltd, is a principal partner of the COP26 summit. To showcase some of the technology available today that contributes to reductions in carbon emissions, Hitachi CM UK Ltd and sister company Synergy Hire prepared a 14T excavator with a Stage V engine, the latest pump efficiency technology, with semi-automated Leica machine guidance, Xwatch height and slew limiter, which is connected to real time CT fleet link telematics. The machine is also running on HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) fuel! Hitachi CM UK’s CEO David Roberts explained: “All of these separate items combined reduce emissions while the machine is running, and increase productivity and efficiency to minimise running time, which results in a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of a job site.” Hitachi CM Ltd is also developing battery powered machines, and alternative fuelled products to ensure the targets for carbon emission reduction can be met and hopefully exceeded. JCB has also said it will invest £100 million on a project to produce superefficient hydrogen engines. It currently has a team of 100 engineers working on the project and will recruit up to 50 more. JCB targets the end of 2022 for the first of its machines to reach the market. Volvo also revealed its ‘intelligent

12

DIGGERSLIVE

future of construction’ prototype this week. The wheeled loader was inspired by a concept devised by Volvo Construction Equipment and Lego Technic! The new Volvo LX03 represents both the next stage into the company’s journey into artificial intelligence and the decarbonisation of the construction sector. CEA member FuelActive continues to embrace a range of technologies, but is fully aware that these changes will not happen overnight and that diesel will continue to play a very active role in the global construction sector. The company has developed an ‘intermediate technology’ that prevents the harmful effects of fuel contamination in dieselpowered equipment, resulting in up to 5 per cent increased fuel efficiency and resultant lower exhaust emissions. This product ensures delivery of diesel to fuel injection systems that is up to 92 per cent cleaner, significantly reducing harmful emissions. FuelActive is already being used successfully by customers across the world, in equipment by leading manufacturers such as Volvo, Terex, Atlas Copco, Komatsu, Caterpillar and JCB. The rise of autonomous construction equipment, alternative fuels such as HVO, hydrogen powered machines and electrification will be the long term solution for OEMs, however, we must also consider the current challenges surrounding the net zero strategy. We need to take into account the controversial topics on the road to net zero. For example, there are huge challenges of performance and powering larger machines with batteries. The electrification of anything other than compact machines remains distant at present, due to the incompatibility of battery performance and weight, compared to the duty cycle demands of mid and larger sized equipment. There’s also the consideration of storage of alternative fuel – hydrogen in particular. The challenge of using hydrogen in tackling climate change is

that it’s very hard to store. As it stands, we do not have the infrastructure for emergent technologies. This aspect should be high on the agenda for COP26 – we need long term strategies and working solutions to address these issues, not just ‘drawing board concepts’. We were hoping that the recent autumn statement would provide some government aid. While the chancellor confirmed that £1.4 billion will be set aside for a Global Britain Investment Fund to attract foreign investment, which will have a particular focus on electric vehicles, it is important that HMG understands that electrification of vehicles is not the only solution for reducing carbon emissions. Issues we hope to be addressed at COP26 •

• • •

End of battery life – what will happen at the end of a battery’s life? 80 per cent of the components are recyclable – what happens to the other 20 per cent? How to tackle climate change with machines with lower tiered engines that are no longer able to work in the UK, and are sold abroad? What will fuel these machines? Fuel storage infrastructure – how do we efficiently and safely store alternative fuels? HVO – what impact does this have on a machine’s engine? A manufacturers’ study is needed. Diesel fuel contamination – fuel contamination is more common than you think, we need a short term solution for cleaning diesel.

As COP26 gets underway, we hope we have provided some ‘food for thought’ and highlighted not only the good things we are achieving in our sector but also the issues that need immediate attention – globally. The CEA is closely following the COP 26 summit and will highlight topics specific to our sector.

JCB spearheads hydrogen revolution JCB is investing £100 million on a project to produce super-efficient hydrogen engines, targeting the end of 2022 for the first machines to be available for sale to customers. A team of 100 engineers is already working on the development with the recruitment of up to 50 more engineers underway. The wraps have already come off a prototype hydrogen powered JCB backhoe loader and a second JCB machine – a Loadall telescopic handler – was unveiled at a central London event in October. JCB’s hydrogen technology has been on show in the Green Zone at the COP26 summit in Glasgow as world leaders debate measures to drastically cut greenhouse emissions. An important Boris Johnson refuels JCB’s prototype hydrogen powered backhoe loader as JCB Chairman Lord Bamford looks on 14

Lord Bamford with the company’s hydrogen powered Loadall

aspect of decarbonisation is developing the infrastructure needed to support the use of hydrogen. Boris Johnson said: “Great British manufacturers like JCB are developing innovative solutions to slash greenhouse emissions and advance the UK’s green industrial revolution. It was fantastic to see JCB’s super-efficient hydrogen engines, which could overhaul UK manufacturing, help us to rapidly reach our climate targets and ramp up the UK’s hydrogen economy – an exciting area that will be essential to tackling climate change, creating new jobs and attracting investment.” JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said: “Our sort of machinery will need to be powered by something other than

www.diggers.live

fossil fuels. We make machines which are powered by diesel so we have to find a solution and we are doing something about it now. “We are investing in hydrogen as we don’t see electric being the allround solution, particularly not for our industry because it can only be used to power smaller machines. It does mean we will carry on making engines, but they will be super-efficient, affordable, high-tech hydrogen motors with zero CO2 emissions, which can be brought to market quickly using our existing supply base. These will be our industry’s first hydrogen engines, developed in Great Britain by British engineers. Hydrogen motors have the potential to help the UK reach CO2 emissions targets more

quickly.” This comes as the company signs a multibillion-pound deal with Australia’s Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) to import and supply green hydrogen (produced using renewable energy), through a specialist division, Ryze Hydrogen. Speaking of the partnership, Bamford said: “It’s fine having an engine powered by green hydrogen, but no good if customers can’t get green hydrogen to fuel their machines. This is a major advance on the road towards making green hydrogen a viable solution. We want the government to show its commitment to the sector by investing in buses, trains, trucks, ships, aircraft and the entire green hydrogen supply chain.”

Liebherr-France SAS Liebherr-France SAS, founded 60 years ago, is responsible, among other things, for the development and production of the group’s crawler excavators in Colmar. When Hans Liebherr, founder of the Liebherr Group, decided to build a new production facility for crawler excavators 60 years ago, he chose Colmar for several reasons. The city of Colmar was already a European hub for numerous important transport routes and a production site in France would facilitate integration into the French market. The factory, built in 1961 in the industrial area of the Alsatian city, initially comprised a production hall and an administration and service room building. The rapid development of the company enabled a subsequent expansion of the facilities. Today there are nine buildings with a built-up area of 148,000 square metres on a total site of 34.5 hectares. The current range of Liebherr-France SAS includes around 30 crawler excavator models, from the R 914 Compact to the R 980 SME, for use in earthworks and quarries. Production also includes electric excavators and a range of special equipment for specific tasks such as demolition, material handling, bridge or tunnel applications. The crawler excavators, with an operating weight of 14 to 100 tonnes, are equipped with Liebherr engines with an output of 90 to 420 kW. Schickel is leaving his post after Liebherr-France SAS reached a record production of 2,000 machines in 2021, with a plan for 2,150 machines next year.

INTERVIEW

THE EQUIPMENT ENGAGEMENT Ashley Ward, joint Managing Director Warwick Ward (machinery) Founded in 1970, Warwick Ward (machinery) Ltd has evolved from very humble beginnings. From what was a family business with three employees in 1970, the company now has more than 100 workers, operating from three depots across England and has an annual turnover approaching £50 million.

us the story of Warwick QTell Ward

My father, Warwick Ward established the company in 1970. Dad was an entrepreneur and a visionary. He started his career working for a local firm selling heavy plant and machinery but always harboured a desire to go it alone. Seeing a gap in the market for used wheel loaders, in September 1970 he formed Warwick Ward (machinery) Ltd. He worked out of a small office at home with my mum doing the books while looking after three pre-school children. We had no yard to store any machines so Dad had to find a buyer for everything fast. They were both proper grafters, working all hours of the day and night and the company soon established a reputation for offering quality, value for money and integrity.

They invested profits from the sale of machines in a small yard in the centre of Barnsley and the business moved to the next level, employing a couple of workshop fitters who could turn their hands to repairing and maintaining the machines. By 1980, Warwick had developed a fantastic reputation as the go-to specialist for used loading shovels and had even started to sell into mainland Europe and further afield. At this time, Warwick identified another opportunity – the supply of second hand parts for used machines. Short on space and on labour, he secured a bigger premises nearby and being a traditional guy, invited his brother Trevor to join the team to run the works and spare parts division. Trevor had little experience in the sector but was a quick learner and became invaluable to the

company, finally retiring from his role as Works Director in 2014. My brother Matt joined the business straight from school in 1984. I went on to study Business and Finance at what today is Teesside University and joined in 1987. Warwick was a great believer in learning the hard way. He gave us both responsibility to make important decisions and learn from them early in our careers. It was a steep but enjoyable learning curve. During the late 80s and early 90s Matt focused primarily on sourcing and buying the used equipment while I focused on selling it and was more involved in finance, marketing and administration. As the 1990s drew to a close, Warwick decided the time had come to hang up his boots and Matt and I became joint Managing Directors in January >>

INTERVIEW

2000. Between 2000 and 2006 turnover quadrupled but we realised that if we continued to only deal in used equipment, there was a limit to what we would be able to achieve. A light bulb moment occurred in early 2006 when a longstanding customer was embarking on a major new project. Due to the 24/7 nature of the project he needed the reliability and security that only new machines could provide. By coincidence, the CASE dealership in our area became available. CASE was a good product with fantastic pedigree and history – one of the best in the market but one that had been poorly represented. We met with CASE senior executives and were offered the dealership. Over the last

26

DIGGERSLIVE

few years we have taken on the Midlands area and most recently London, the South East and the North East of England, making us the largest independent CASE dealer in Europe. In 2012, Finnish waste shredder and compactor manufacturer Tana approached Warwick Ward to represent its range in the UK. This sat nicely alongside our CASE dealership and growing customer base in the recycling arena. After a few years of successfully selling Tana, we were approached by the Terex Ecotec corporation with a view to taking on its dealership for Northern England. The Ecotec range comprised of material handlers, trommel screens and shredders. In 2015 we took on the

Ecohog range of downstream waste and metal separators. Our long term strategy has been to be a trusted one stop shop to the earthmoving, construction and recycling sectors. The gap that now existed in our offering was a range of crushers and screeners for the quarry, aggregates and material processing industries and last year we were approached by Keestrack, one of Europe’s premier crushing and screening manufacturers, to become its sole UK dealer. The plant hire side of the business has continually grown and evolved, with a full range of machines for short, medium and long-term hire and many customers entering into full R&M service contracts.

INTERVIEW

Today, Warwick Ward is a £50-million, three-depot business employing more than 100 staff. We believe that Dad would have been proud of us if somewhat astounded at how dramatically the company had grown. One our great sadnesses is that, passing away in 2004, Dad never got to enjoy the retirement he so richly deserved. He isn’t around to see the journey we’ve been on, but we will both be forever grateful for the grounding, values and commercial education that he provided us with in our formative years. Dad was all about being honest and open and giving a first-class service. That’s something we strive to do and we instil the same values in our team.

is Warwick Ward’s QWhat working culture?

I believe you have to empower your management team and give them authority to make decisions. It’s the only way they’ll learn, just as Matt and I did 30-odd years ago. When we took on the CASE business in 2006, Matt and I quickly recognised that we needed to put together a senior and middle management team or risk imploding with the amount of work that we had to do. This meant bringing in people with the required skill sets from outside the organisation for the first time. One of those recruits was our now Sales Director, Simon Causier. Simon came from a completely different sector

to head up the CASE construction side of the business. This allowed Matt and me to focus on other areas of the company. Simon’s commercial knowledge, professionalism and commitment have been invaluable. He now oversees the ever-growing sales team for all the new equipment brands we represent, including our most recent dealer partnership, with Zato, an Italian manufacturer of metal shredders and shears for the scrap sector. Building strong senior and middle management teams has been a key focus over the last 10 years and we are absolutely delighted with how the team now looks. A year ago we brought in an extremely experienced and talented Operations Director in Matt Godhard, who has >>

INTERVIEW

worked hard to improve efficiency and further develop the positive culture at Warwick Ward. We have always been a very sales focused business but operations and sales have to work hand in glove for the business to succeed. I believe we have got that balance right; we have a can-do approach and when we look for new team members this is as important as having world class technical ability. I was looking through some HR records recently and was surprised by some of the length of service stats. Since 1970, 10 people have been with us for over 30 years, a further three have served more than 25, another six have surpassed 20, four have been with us for between 15 and 20 and a further 15 have passed the 10 year milestone.

I think those statistics and say a lot about the company, its values and culture. There is always a lot of laughter and banter in the building, which is important to us. Work has to be fun as well as productive. With engagement, dedication and focus, our team has helped our business grow.

do you carry out in the QWhat way of training?

We firmly believe in developing from within, giving people the opportunity to grow in their roles. Many of our middle and senior managers have been with the company for many years and have been on a journey of personal and professional development throughout their careers. Our training and development programme helps drive engagement and

the culture of our business. Ensuring our team has the right skills is essential to deliver the customer centric service required in our industry and we find investing in our team pays dividends. Whether this is recognised qualifications or on the job training, we ensure every member of the team takes part in structured training each year. Apprenticeship schemes also work for us as they not only bring the required training but allow us to instil our values. Every year, we recruit apprentices in the service, workshop, PDI and other areas of the business. It makes Matt and me incredibly proud to see how so many of our staff have progressed, developed and enhanced their skill sets.

What can a customer expect Q when they buy from Warwick Ward?

Customers are the lifeblood of any business and our customers can expect a one-to-one focus. We treat every customer, whatever their size, with the same importance. We represent premium brands who produce premium products tried and tested in the marketplace. That said, selling someone a new machine or a good used one is only part of the process. The crucial piece of the jigsaw is that you must be able to back it up with excellent service and aftersales.

do you see the medium QHow term for Warwick Ward?

We continue to invest in our facilities, with exciting plans to further expand in the coming months to accommodate our growth and the increased geographical territory for CASE. We now operate out of depots in Barnsley, Alcester (south Birmingham) and Harlow to service the ever growing territories we represent for our partners. We’ve been absolutely delighted with the traction we’ve gained with the Keestrack range. The products are of the highest quality and the customers we have won over from some other established brands have been impressed with both performance and efficiency. Our recent collaboration with Italian manufacturer, Zato, fills a gap in our portfolio for the scrap metal processing sector and we are very excited about the opportunities this brings. CASE, Terex, Keestrack and Zato are all very forward thinking companies and product development is a key focus for all of them, as it is for ourselves. >>

INTERVIEW

Everyone in vehicle and machinery manufacturing is looking towards cleaner fuels, battery technology, electrification, moving away from diesel powered engines and working towards carbon neutrality. Post COVID-19, the plant machinery and recycling machinery sectors are incredibly buoyant. There has been a pent up demand for products and the challenge we face now is meeting that demand.

attracts you to the QWhat industry?

People and products. I love seeing people progress, develop and achieve things that they themselves probably thought they never could. It’s incredibly rewarding. I really enjoy the straightforward nature of those who work in the industry.

There are some fantastic characters. Not always easy to deal with, but fantastic nonetheless.

Have you been involved with Q any interesting projects in your career?

During the late 1990s and early 2000s I was involved in several UK government trade missions promoting UK business in some interesting overseas locations such as Trinidad, Zimbabwe, the UAE and Egypt. As a relatively young man, it was an exciting opportunity to travel to places that I’d never been to and the experiences I gained were invaluable, meeting some really interesting people and developing some fantastic business relationships in the process.

has your work changed QHow over the years?

When my brother and I took over in 2000, we employed 15 to 20 people and the business turned over around £2.5 million a year. Matt and I were very hands on in those days, involved in every aspect of sales, marketing, purchasing, finance and general administration. Today we employ 110 people with an annual turnover of around £50 million and rising. It’s a markedly different business, with some very talented managers at both senior and middle management level. It’s never easy to relinquish a degree of control, but if a business is to develop and grow, you have to have confidence in your management team and let them perform their roles. Someone I respect once said to me “Only do what only you can do.” In other words, don’t be a busy fool. It’s important to recruit people who have skills and expertise in areas where you might be less proficient. Matt and I recognise each other’s strengths and the fact that as brothers we’ve managed to work harmoniously for 34 years at times under enormous pressure says a lot for the strength of our relationship.

QUICKFIRE Who’s your favourite artist? I love music generally but would have to be the late great David Bowie – a genius of his time. Who do you most admire? In no particular order, Bjorn Borg, Seve Ballesteros, Mohammed Ali, Glen Hoddle and Richard Branson What would be your desert island luxury? An acoustic guitar. What’s your bucket list activity? To play golf at Augusta National (home of the Masters) What’s your ideal weekend? A game of golf with my pals, watching my beloved Sheffield United with my sons and a nice meal out with my wife and friends. What’s your favourite food/cuisine? I love most types of food but particularly love Mediterranean cooking; fresh fish, seafood and of course a nice barbecue steak are all wonderful. 30

EVENT

Molson bares all by Ben Chambers On Tuesday 12 October, Demolition Hub editor Toby Wilsdon and I attended the Molson Group open day at the company’s headquarters in Avonmouth, Bristol. The event was labelled as a ‘VIP’ Open Day and to be honest I felt like one. The event’s goal was to highlight the facilities Molson has on offer, including its new purpose built service centre Arriving early, we were escorted to a golf buggy to ferry us to where all the action (and equipment) was, where we received a warm welcome and a hot coffee from the attentive staff. We then went for a leisurely wander around to see the stalls of the vast number of brands that Molson looks after, represents and is a dealer for these days. The setup was awesome, like a mini Plantworx, and perhaps merits an annual/ biennial construction event in its own right. We were greeted by representatives of brands such as Kobelco and Hyundai excavators and Sennebogen scrap and waste handlers, all standing tall and giving the feel of an established industry event.

32

DIGGERSLIVE

After a long stroll; chats with familiar readers and advertisers manning the many stands; pictures taken and moments of awe shared, I was greeted with a friendly tap on the shoulder by Molson Marketing Manager James Dodkins, who I hadn’t seen since a show maybe three or four years ago. James, Toby and I chatted at length about how Diggers LIVE came about, what we have accomplished and what our plans were for the brand next year and beyond. Seemingly keen to be a part of what we were doing, James told us we were going for a ride. Toby and I were bundled into his car and taken to a nearby recycling plant where a Sennebogen waste handler was working in coordination with a Terex Finlay crusher and screener. The Terex Finlay machine whirred into action, leaving the wood chippings neatly piled high – a real up-close-and-personal feel of the synergy between the machines. At that point James informed me that we would be migrating to another country. We were on our way to Wales,

driving an hour to a quarry just beyond Cardiff. At the Seth Hill & Son working quarry we were treated to the sight of a Plantforce branded Kobelco excavator clearing rocks into a Terex Finlay heavy duty screener and crusher with inclined screeners and conveyers. The process began with heavy duty RA30s and 40s manoeuvring the rocks. We arrived back at the Molson HQ in Avonmouth at around five, just as the open day was coming to an end, and managed to grab some keto doughnuts. Yes, they even catered for my unusual diet. Molson Group is the UK’s largest independent new and used equipment dealer. The company has a customer-focused approach, offering clients of all sizes a singlesource supply of market leading products, backed up by a team that cares about your business. Molson’s team of more than 70 fully trained service engineers and millions of pounds worth of parts operate from 13 locations strategically positioned throughout the UK.

JCB has updated the 457 wheeled loading shovel to meet EU Stage V emissions legislation. The 457 is now powered by a Cummins QSB6.7 diesel engine, equipped with a single module aftertreatment, containing a diesel oxidation catalyst, selective catalytic reduction (SCR), a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and an ammonia slip catalyst (ASC). The move brings an increase in overall engine power, with two power modes, which can be controlled from the cab to reduce the engine’s output for lighter operating duties. The machine will also be supplied with a five-speed Powershift transmission as standard, in place of the previous four-speed unit. This combination will deliver a better range of speeds to suit a wide range of applications but will also deliver a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 10 per cent as the loader will be able to operate both in lowpower mode and with optimised efficiency through the use of better-spaced transmission ratios. The 457 will also feature an auto engine shutdown feature that can be adjusted by the operator, resulting in further fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, prolonging service maintenance.

Hyundai HL960A The HL960A wheel loader is part of Hyundai’s A-series: a fresh generation of construction equipment that complies with European emission limits. This stage V machine scooped the SaMoTer Technical Innovation Award in the Medium Wheel Loaders category. With an operating weight of 19.2 tonnes, the HL960A carries a straight edge bucket with a capacity of 3.3 m3. A variety of heavy-duty and light material buckets are available for other applications. The A model is the latest incarnation of the wheeled loader range and has been upgraded around a new Cummins B6.7 diesel delivering 168 kW (225 hp). The Stage V Cummins

engine delivers slightly more power but more importantly, has increased its torque output by 15 per cent to 1,186 nM (875lb/ft) over the outgoing HL960 model. Meeting the Stage V regulations involves the loader using Cummins’ Single Module after-treatment system that incorporates DPF, SCR and Urea dosing in a single unit taking up 50 per cent less space than the previous system.

Cumbria-based Hyundai dealer Taylor and Braithwaite has recently trialled the loader in the UK very first Hyundai HL975A CVT wheeled loader model in the UK to long-term client, DA Harrison. The customer was so impressed with the machine that it has now been added to its Hyundai fleet. DA Harrison is no stranger to Hyundai and purchased a new HL975-9 wheeled loader four years ago, to replace a smaller HL770 model. Since then, a second HL975-9 has been added to the fleet with both machines performing admirably over the last few years. With the first HL975-9 now having clocked up more than12,000 trouble free hours, T&B’s sales director Ian Burton was pleased that the quarry wanted to look at the newly launched wheel loader, which can offer significant

The Stage V engine from Cummins features an all-in-one exhaust aftertreatment system that cuts emissions by over 50 per cent compared to a Stage IV engine. One of the major benefits of this package is the lack of an EGR system, which will significantly reduce operational costs over the lifetime of the machine. An additional feature to decrease fuel consumption and prolong machine life has also been included in the package with a customisable Automatic Engine

First impressions The HL975A CVT weighs in at 27 tonnes, similar to that of the HL975-9, but where the new model really benefits is with its ability to carry larger buckets with capacities up to 5.2m3, an eight per cent increase over the older model. Hyundai has combined a tried and trusted combination of ZF axles and a state-of-the-art ZF CVT transmission in the 27-tonne loader. The CVT transmission offers optimised power output by continually changing the ratios of hydraulic to mechanical energy depending on load and speed of the machine and keeps the engine running at a lower speed to offer smooth, seamless acceleration. During deceleration, the CVT acts as a brake, reducing wear on the service brake and prolonging the life of the axle oil. Ian explains the CVT transmission. “It’s a totally different driving style

A fully adjustable traction control system allows the operator to increase or decrease the amount of lock to the wheels depending on the surface they are operating on. The Hyundai cab is light and airy with a well-built feel to it complete with a heated and air suspended seat. For those who prefer joystick steering, T&B have spec’d this machine up with the option, which is mounted to a drop-down arm rest on the left of the seat. The HL975A CVT is fitted with Hyundai’s AAVM 360-degree camera system with IMOD intelligent object detection. The screen for the system sits right in your eyeline on the right-hand cab pillar and below this is the well laid out and simple to use touchscreen monitor. A combination of a 7-inch touch screen and a bank of easily identifiable buttons allows the operator to check or alter almost all of the day-to-day settings for the machine with ease. The centrally mounted dash is easy to read and compact enough to allow a great view across the front of the machine. A combination of the all-round camera system, large mirrors and large glass panels with slim pillars gives a very good view from the seat. To try the stick steer option is simple. Pressing a button on the loader joystick and the same on the steering joystick activates the system. Following on from the trial at the quarry, figures from Hyundai’s Hi Mate monitoring software have confirmed that the loader is more fuel efficient than the standard transmission machine, with fuel usage in the region of 25 per cent lower than the older HL975-9. Ian Taylor said: “I am really pleased to continue supplying machines to DA Harrison, the company who first gave us a chance with Hyundai wheeled loaders back in 2010, when we had just become a dealer. They are still running this first Hyundai HL760-7A machine. It is great to see such a progressive company see the benefits of modern technology getting integrated into their company to reduce their own running costs, this time by reducing fuel usage while increasing the bucket capacity. “At T&B we really strive to grow these long-term business relationships and very much appreciate when customers come back to us, so for this, we thank them for the continued support.”

Doosan DL420-7 wheel loaders enter service in Germany Ottenbüttler Sand Gesellschaft mbH of Dammfleth has taken delivery of the first two Doosan DL420-7 wheel loaders in Germany. According to Ottenbüttler Sand Managing Director, Jonny Peters, the new DL-7 machines compare very well against the company’s DL420-5 predecessor, one of which is still in service with the company He says: “The new generation machines represent a clear improvement in several areas, providing very high performance and excellent driving comfort that more than matches the other top brands.”

WHEEL LOADERS

Productive in the pits The two new DL420-7s are currently in use in the company’s sand pits at Ottenbühl and Peissen, where they are used to extract fill sand and process it into different grain size groups by dry screening. Jonny says: “The previous DL-5 wheel loaders from Doosan offered outstanding performance in the sand pits with low fuel consumption. We are getting the same or better output with the new machines, with the ergonomics for the operator and the driving comfort being taken to new levels.”

40

The two wheel loaders are in operation in the sand pits for around ten hours a day. Their main tasks involve removal of material direct from the walls of the pits, feeding the screening plant and then loading the graded sand onto the trucks. The machines are also used in construction waste recycling. “We are very satisfied with the machines and the drivers are enjoying working with the DL420-7s,” Jonny says. One of the drivers adds that the new DL420-7 model always offers excellent traction thanks to its automatic limited slip differential. This is particularly evident in the fact that none of the wheels slip when pushing the standard 4.5 m3 bucket into the sand faces. The DL420-7 wheel loader also climbs the steep inclines effortlessly owing to its torque converter lock-up system. Pre-series testing Before Jonny Peters ordered the wheel loaders from his dealer, Atlas Hamburg, he had the opportunity to test a pre-series DL420-7 model in a sand pit for two months. During this period, the wheel loader operators were able to try out the Doosan machine extensively. All agreed

that the DL420-7 was exactly the right machine for use in the sand pit, so the company made its first order from Atlas Hamburg when the test machine was returned. Clean power The DL420-7 is powered by the new Scania DC13 Stage V six-cylinder engine, which produces 257 kW (345 hp) at 1,800 rpm and provides an impressive maximum torque of 2,196 Nm at 1,100 rpm. The new engine meets Stage V emission regulations without the need for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), through the use of selective catalyst reduction, diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter (DPF) after-treatment technologies. The ash cleaning cycle on the DPF has been improved to over 6,000 hours and the operator is fully informed about the status of the DPF via a soot level indicator on the new 8-inch touch screen display in the cab. Equipped for comfort A major feature of Doosan DL-7 wheel loaders is the completely redesigned cab, offering greatly improved visibility, touchscreen displays and much more space for the driver. The new EMCV (Electric Main Control Valve) joystick fully integrated in the armrest is another standard feature, providing smooth, precise control of the wheel loader. The wheel loaders at Ottenbüttler Sand are also equipped with a full light package and a compressor for cleaning the cab. Trusted relationship Ottenbüttler Sand has been relying on Doosan machines for more than ten years, all of which it has purchased from Atlas Hamburg. Jonny says: “With Atlas Hamburg, we have a top local dealer we can always rely on. We also use machines from other manufacturers, but we mainly rely on Doosan for our machinery fleet.” In addition to the DL-7 and DL-5 wheel loaders, Ottenbüttler Sand currently has Doosan DX255LC-5 and DX180LC-5 HT excavators, a DX19 compact excavator and another DL250 wheel loader in operation.

Where there’s muck there’s brass Writing for Diggers LIVE, Tim Watson of McCloskey Equipment examines how one London transportation company is reducing the environmental and social impact of construction projects at the same time as improving the bottom line Any dynamic city will have a plethora of construction, demolition and civil engineering projects underway at any one time, leaving a big, messy problem. Waste. The logical options are disposal, recycling or reuse, within the city or without the city. In general, it is clear that the most efficient of these is reuse/recycling within and the least is disposal without. Avoiding the transportation of tonnes of heavy, dirty waste through cities’ road networks reduces urban congestion and

44

DIGGERSLIVE

lowers the carbon footprint of a project directly and indirectly. And recycling makes use of valuable resources at the same time as reducing the energy and other environmental impact required to create and transport new ones. H Sivyer Transport Limited is the largest muck away company in London, with more than 200 people and 130 tipper grab lorries servicing the capital’s material collection and disposal needs. Each year, the company moves 1.5 million

tonnes of demolition and construction waste, with an annual turnover of £40 million. Alongside the constant challenge of working under London’s strict environmental standards, emission limits, tight regulations, ever increasing traffic and logistical bottlenecks, there remains the question of how you handle such a vast amount of material in a city as dense as London. Managing Director, Simon Sivyer says, “Over the last 18 months, the environment – specifically, the impact a project or process can have on the environment – has become a focal point. It’s always been important, but I’ve seen it climb the priority ladder to become a prominent feature for every customer. Not only do we, as a company, have a huge responsibility in this, but we also have one of the best opportunities to make a positive impact. “The demand here is huge, but we are doing more than just your usual recycled aggregates. We still offer your 6F5, Type 1, Shingles, etc, but we have invested heavily to develop processes which enable us to make any British Standard aggregate from recovered material.” This is an impressive statement. British Standards are strictly controlled and many BSI aggregates are rarely made with anything other than virgin or primary material. Few can achieve the required standard with recycled product, yet Simon and his team have done just that.

Upstream benefit Simon continues, “The upstream benefit is massive. If every project in London used primary materials, we’d have thousands of lorries travelling hundreds of miles in and out of the capital every single day. These products can now be produced locally, using local materials that are being recycled right here in the capital. Just in the logistics, the embodied carbon saving is huge. “This also reduces the demand for virgin materials. For example, much of the drainage shingle used here in London is dredged from the North Sea. Now, contractors can choose a recycled product that meets the same standards, without negatively impacting the environment by transporting a raw material dredged from the seabed. “We have our own research and development facility and have developed

46

our own processes to deliver materials that meet every required standard, including BSI and RAP Quality Protocols. We are rigorous with our testing; Sivyers is a fourth generation family business with a longstanding reputation for quality. Every stone we sell must uphold that.” Tools for the job One of the factors determining this outcome is the equipment Sivyer uses. The company runs several McCloskey screeners, including three R230 high energy screeners, an S250 screener – one of the largest track mobile screeners in the world – and a tracked 621 trommel. McCloskey has more than 35 years’ experience building trommels – it was the company’s first product line, back in the 1980s. Today, McCloskey is the world’s leading trommel manufacturer, having pioneered trommel design and innovation for more than three decades. The 621 trommel is perfectly suited to Sivyer’s operations, with a reputation for reliability in construction and demolition waste, topsoil, compost, waste recycling, as well as many other large screening applications. Also supporting operations are three McCloskey R230 screeners. As one of the most robust, durable and powerful mobile screeners available, the R230 provides uncompromised production levels across even the most heavy-duty scalping operations.

H Sivyer Transport Limited benefits directly from the performance of these high energy trommels and screeners, which deliver the high-volume outputs required by the company’s vast operations while reliably creating high-quality

screened product, all delivered with the maximum efficiency. Completing Sivyer’s operations is the McCloskey S250 Triple Deck Screener, a machine that raises industry standards to deliver outstanding results, both in terms of throughput and quality. The S250 is one of the largest track mobile screeners in the world, with greater true screening area offered from the machine’s 22ft (6,710mm) triple deck, high energy screen. Along with its high energy screening action, this ensures Sivyer’s McCloskey S250 provides the best aggregate from an uncompromised material screening process. Sivyer has worked closely with McCloskey Equipment throughout the development of its materials catalogue, using their collective knowledge from the materials processing and recycling industry. Simon Sivyer says, “McCloskey machines offer fantastic performance; the quality of the product speaks for itself, with each running efficiently. I’ve worked with McCloskey Equipment for several years and they’ve always delivered, whether it’s been a routine service for a machine, or a bespoke addition for one of our specialist processes. “By combining our vision and R&D facilities with McCloskey Equipment’s knowledge and experience, we’ve been able to achieve something truly remarkable.”

www.diggers.live

A 160-year journey Sivyers has come a long way over the last 160 years, and it is not about to slow down anytime soon. Sivyer continues, “In 1862, we used horses and carts to move construction waste around Victorian London; today we use a fleet of grabtipper lorries. Improvement is continuous and I am using technology to take our next step forward. “We still do a lot of business over phone and email. It’s old-fashioned trading in a modern sophisticated company. Everything we do is forward thinking, from fleet management to material processing, but the way we trade doesn’t reflect this… yet. In 2022, we are launching a new user-friendly buying experience, the ‘Amazon of Aggregates’ if you like, a one-stop-shop where any customer can search, find and order the materials they need quickly and efficiently on our website. Not only will this streamline the buying process, but it will also promote sustainable, recycled alternatives next to traditional materials – and, for me, this is key.” For Simon, leading the company his great-grandfather, George Hutchings, established in 1862 will always be personal, and the impact his business and customers have on the environment is part of that. “This is personally important to

me because it directly impacts the environment in which I live. I’m proud that, as a company, we have created sustainable, affordable options for the benefit of our customers and the environment. This is a big step forward in construction, one I hope others will follow. “Waste is complex, often a soup of mixed materials, which once upon a time may not have been processed as it should. I’m sure there are still some companies out there still doing this now, but Sivyers is not one of them. “We take our responsibility very seriously and share a passion for high standards. When a customer works with us, they can trust Sivyers to fully manage their responsibilities, and rely on our quality service, whether we are first on site to clear waste or delivering the final load of fully-recycled aggregates.”

INTERVIEW

Business Insider interview Martin Bestwick, Sales Director, inspHire

Q

How do you fit in to InspHire? I am the Sales and Marketing Director, responsible for design and execution of the global rental strategy for the Kerridge Commercial Systems Rental Division. This division is built up of our three core solutions: inspHire, Current RMS and OnRent as its market leading brands.

Q

inspHire is a market-leader in rental management software trusted by 15,000+ daily users across the globe. Martin Bestwick, inspHire’s Sales Director, has seen its development and growth from the early days and now leads the global sales team, which continues to uphold inspHire’s reputation and reach new industries within the hire and rental sector. Recently celebrating 20 years with inspHire, Martin has had quite the journey. Starting off as a helpdesk advisor providing technical support to inspHire users, he worked his way up to manage the professional service team. For more than 10 years, Martin managed the implementation of inspHire’s software solutions, as well as ensuring its customers’ experience is effortless. Now Sales Director, Martin has experienced all touchpoints across inspHire, as well as seeing the continuous development of its products. 48

DIGGERSLIVE

How did you come to work for inspHire? I started working for the company in 2001 as a Helpdesk Advisor. It was only the second job I’d held since completing my Advanced NVQ IT course at Nottingham College, my first being a Technical Advisor for a well-known retailer.

Q

Tell us about your career progression within InspHire When I joined inspHire back in 2001, I started off in the Helpdesk department, focusing on supporting our customers with technical enquiries. Then I decided I was ready for a change and moved into the Professional Services department, where I spent 10-years and ended up managing the team. This involved implementing the solution and working with our customers before they went live with their system. In 2011 I made the

move to sales and in 2018 took over as Sales Director from Graham Dobbs, the current Managing Director. I’ve had a unique journey here at inspHire to say the least, working in most departments and learning first-hand how all teams operate.

Q

What is it about your role that attracts you? What do you enjoy and what are the key skills required for your job? Ever since I started working at inspHire, I’ve been fascinated by the diversity of hiring as a concept that has grown in popularity exponentially. The number of key sectors the hire and rental industry delivers essential services for is so vast and because of this, no two days are ever the same. For example, one week I found myself implementing a solution for an oil and gas company in Trinidad, then later that month I was on a plane to the US supporting a project for a construction company in North America. Completely different countries, people, cultures and sectors. It’s this diversity that means I never get bored.

Q

How do you think your colleagues see you? Hopefully as someone that likes to make work enjoyable. Someone who is happy

to roll their sleeves up and lead from the front. I’m still very active with helping present our solutions to prospective customers, while at the same time visiting our existing clients to hear about their current successes or challenges.

Q

Tell us about InspHire, its history and development inspHire was created by our former CEO Chris Branson and ex-Chairman Steve Butler. Chris had developed a basic hire solution for Steve’s chiller business back in the 90s. This successful working relationship led to the creation of Maple Software Solutions, which was later renamed inspHire in 2001. inspHire’s offices have always been based in Nottingham. inspHire has pretty much grown year-on-year since the day I started. Back in 2001, as a relatively new startup,

the former management team had to be very cautious to ensure they didn’t overreach and place unnecessary risk on the business. Since then, we’ve grown from having a single room in a business unit, to taking over the whole unit, as well as having offices in Australia, the Netherlands, South Africa and the US, to serve other core markets. Over the years we’ve supported some of the biggest success stories of the rental industry. Boels were, if I recall correctly, a 30-depot company years ago when they signed with us. Now they are one of the largest rental companies in the world and have more than 750 depots in the group since the recent acquisition of Cramo. Looking forward, I fully expect to continue in the same vein, creating innovative solutions that accelerate our customers’ growth and make them market leaders. Within the last year, inspHire has signed two global leading enterprise rental

companies that recognise our pedigree and with our next generation products, we expect to partner with these companies for many years to come.

Q

Explain what it is inspHire does, in particular for our readers in Diggers LIVE inspHire is unique in that we have a comprehensive solution for every rental company, no matter what size or what language they speak. We’ve developed four unbelievable solutions that have been developed specifically for the end of the market they serve, rather than one solution that tries to fit all. Now we’ve joined the Kerridge Commercial Systems group, we’ve gone from 120 colleagues across four offices, to 1,300 colleagues and 20 offices. It will take us a few years to establish our rental solutions across the full Kerridge CS network, but with our newly found capacity we intend to continue our growth and support the wider global rental community for many years to come.

Jewsons, Wosely, Howdens and Eurocar Parts to name a few.

Q

How do you see the company in five or ten years? I see us growing and going from strength to strength. We now have access to more than 300 developers and double that number in our other technical

departments. As a group, we have unrivalled experience in delivering dedicated solutions to more than 25,000 companies worldwide, of all different shapes and sizes. Having the ability to tap into this level of knowledge will only strengthen our offering and the service we can offer the hire and rental industry long term.

Q

What are InspHire’s USPs? From a one-man-band to a global rental team, inspHire offers a solution for everyone, designed by industry experts who have more than 100 years’ collective experience. inspHire continues to deliver solutions to thousands of rental businesses of all sizes across the globe, with more than 12,000 active users.

Q

How does inspHire improve customers’ bottom lines? I think our track record speaks for itself. inspHire provides solutions for every operational activity within a rental business, no matter what industry it works in. Whether you’re a startup or an established leader, inspHire offers an allin-one solution that supports every step of the rental cycle. This not only consolidates your rental data by having full visibility within one system, but also allows you to drive better decision making so you can focus on customer retention and winning new business.

Q

Tell us about the acquisition by Kerridge and what that brings to inspHire. We spent a long time finding the right company for the acquisition. The process took a number of years and involved more than 20 companies. Kerridge CS, like inspHire, is a best of breed provider and supports some of the largest organisations in the distributive trade and automotive aftercare industries, including names like

INTERVIEW

Who/what would you be in an alternative life? There were only two other careers I was really interested in; fighter pilot and footballer. I got close to being a footballer being at Derby as a 16-yearold and playing semi-professionally until I was 32. The fighter pilot dream was short lived, but I’ve always been in awe when I see them in the air. Who do you most admire? That’s a big question. Naturally my family for the great upbringing they provided me with. But in terms of my work life, I’ve been extremely fortunate to work with a visionary like Chris Branson, with one of the most astute managers and business leaders in Graham Dobbs, and someone with the character and work ethic of Matt Cunningham, our Operations Director. All three of them helped guide me to where I am today.

MEET MARTIN

What gets you out of bed in the morning? I’ve always been quite regimented and go to the gym at 5am every morning. It sets me up for the day despite having to go to bed at 7:30. What do you do for fun? I’m still playing football in the veterans leagues. Maybe not with the same intensity but enjoy it just as much as I did when I started. What’s your bucket list activity? Having recently celebrated 20 years at inspHire, I challenged myself to complete the National Three Peak challenge (Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike) in 24-hours – raising donations for Macmillan Charity Support. This is definitely an experience I will never forget, and although it was tough, it was definitely worth it as the fundraiser is what matters the most. What’s your ideal weekend? My ideal weekend now is taking my sons to football, spending time with my family and the occasional beer down the pub. What’s your favourite food/cuisine? I have quite an eclectic pallet, but it’s generally driven by red meat. Give me some bacon or steak and you have a happy man.

Ritchie Bros launches online tool to calculate heavy equipment sale prices Europe’s largest machinery listing site. The algorithm provides a good price estimation that can be used when making decisions to buy or sell equipment.”

A 20-tonne excavator with 8,000 hours on the clock; the eight-year-old skid steer loader you’re looking to sell; or that truck tractor you’ll need to replace soon. How much would they sell for in today’s market? With productivity at unprecedented highs in the industry and long lead times on new equipment, it’s a challenging time for many businesses to make calculated decisions to buy or sell machinery. But the appetite for machinery has continued to be strong throughout 2021. A market survey conducted among construction businesses by Ritchie Bros. earlier this year, showed that 72 per cent of the respondents expected to add machinery to their fleets in 2021.

More than 90 per cent indicated they expected older machines would need to be replaced. Price levels of construction machinery at Ritchie Bros. online auctions and marketplaces have soared 10 to 15 per cent above last year’s averages. It’s no surprise that equipment owners and managers are looking to adjust their fleets and need data and tools to help guide their decision making. The new Ritchie Bros. Rupert Craven, Ritchie Bros UK Sales Director, said: “What makes this tool unique, is that users have instant access to millions of previously sold items from the world’s largest auction company and

How it works The free online tool pulls historical data from various sources – Ritchie Bros. auctions, IronPlanet, Marketplace-E and Mascus. Using millions of previously sold items, the algorithm calculates average prices and estimates the value of your equipment. After logging on to Ritchie Bros. Asset Valuator, users can search the database by brand, model, age, hours, mileage and more. For a more granular level of detail, customised searches can be made by region, country and sales channel, and users can compare current prices with those dating back up to two years – prior to pandemic pricing changes. Construction firms welcome groundbreaking approach to branding plant machinery by Alex Dearing, Business Development Manager at Brandfixx A growing number of construction firms are choosing a new approach to branding plant machinery that’s faster than traditional techniques, provides better protection for equipment and improved visibility on site. Despite only launching Brandfixx last year, we already count Wordsworth Excavations, Collins, H&H Construction and Balfour Beatty among our growing customer base. Using precision, laserguided 3D scanning technology to map the whole machine, we design and manufacture panel by panel branding kits that can be applied to machines in a matter of hours. We recently branded Balfour Beatty’s EC950, Volvo’s largest excavator. It’s a huge piece of machinery but it took a team of two people just four hours to get the branding on it. Wrapping it using traditional branding would have taken a minimum of two days, while painting it would have taken a week. We also branded one of H&H Construction’s new JCB 245s working on the HS2 project in a Union Jack design to celebrate British manufacturing. And we covered the superstructure of another one, a limited edition 220X, to promote H&H’s sponsorship of the rugby league team, Castleford Tigers. Both look absolutely amazing. The innovation in machinery branding has been growing in popularity because it minimises the time that it takes to get machines in operation. Repairs are so much quicker too. With the panel by panel branding system it’s no longer a case of rewrapping or repainting the whole machine.

www.diggers.live

Every company investing in expensive vehicles or machinery wants to brand them in a high-impact way to promote their business but manually ‘wrapping’ a single sheet of cast vinyl around the contours of a vehicle takes a lot of time, even for highly skilled applicators. That means high labour costs as well as the cost of downtime for the vehicle. And any damage to the wrapping once the vehicle is in use means redoing the whole job – which means yet more cost and more downtime. We knew there had to be a better and faster way, which is why we developed Brandfixx. In addition to cost savings of up to 40 per cent and time savings of up to 75 per cent resulting from the simplified design, production and application process, the Brandfixx approach offers additional benefits that are particularly relevant to the construction industry. Safety is a key concern for the industry and we use fully reflective, R3B-compliant material on our plant machinery kits, protecting your workforce by ensuring equipment is visible in low light conditions from as far away 300 metres. The material we use on plant machinery is also very tough, so it’s able to withstand the rigours of a site, with an anticipated life of five to seven years. We, and our customers, are thrilled with the improvement to plant machine branding. We love working with the construction industry as the size of the machines means what we do can have a truly awesome impact and we’re looking forward to creating more head-turning designs as our business continues to grow.

As a consequence, the operator can always keep an eye on the working environment and this means significantly greater safety. The rotation of the operator’s seat and console is easily carried out in situ using a single handle

60

DIGGERSLIVE

Features: • Unrestricted view = more safety • 180° rotation of the entire driver’s station • High driving position, high working position • 9,000 kg-payload • Hydrostatic drive to unlock and then rotate the complete console unit. This is particularly useful on confined construction sites, in, for example, inner city areas, in tunnels or on busy roads as the operator steers the machine with the skip in the travel direction, rotates the

operator console for precision unloading with a full view of the loading area and, after a 180-degree rotation of the seat, drives away again with a full field of vision without having to turn the vehicle. Timeconsuming turning and manoeuvring are no longer necessary.

Two tracks good, four tracks better

DUMPERS

Moorend track systems and specialist tracked vehicles by Toby Wilsdon

62

DIGGERSLIVE

Andy Cox, a design engineer with many years’ experience in various sectors, founded Moorend Limited in 2013, having previously worked at specialist plant dealers, as a local drainage contractor and building specialist machines. He had also gained invaluable experience on large farms in America and Australia. Andy’s initial interest in track systems was born while working for a company that ran a fleet of traditional two-track dumpers. He was given the twin tasks of reducing high running costs while increasing low utilisation. He initially concentrated on using different track belts and running gear on two-tracked dumpers, with some limited success. During this time Andy was contacted by a site dumper manufacturer to look at putting tracks on a wheeled articulated 10-tonne dumper. They built a successful prototype and it is still operating today on the original track belts. While this early model had its shortcomings, it enabled Andy to gain a better understanding of what worked well and what didn’t work so well. The initial

DUMPERS

operation of this prototype alongside two-tracked machines provided some interesting results. • On certain lengths of haul, it achieved a fuel saving of up to 40 per cent per cubic metre of material moved. • Even though the machine only had a roll frame, operators preferred it over a cabbed two-tracked dumper as the smoother ride meant it was much less fatiguing. • Interestingly, this proved true in dry conditions too. The traditional tracked machines would be parked as they were too expensive to operate and 10-tonne site dumpers would be used instead. While the four-track machine had a significantly reduced speed, it sometimes worked out to be more productive in dry bumpy conditions as the four tracks provided a much smoother ride than the wheels. • There did not seem to be a significant increase in wear running on dry mud and dirt. Andy formed Moorend Ltd to enable himself to develop rubber track systems for existing wheeled construction machinery to allow greater use and efficient operation in challenging ground conditions. The first project resulted in the development of the four-track 3.2-tonne articulated telehandler (JCB TM320). After an intensive period of field testing, the performance results indicated drastically reduced surface damage to the working environments, outstanding traction qualities and a host of economic and on-the-ground operational benefits. After the success of this first prototype, it became apparent to Andy that there were smaller loader type machines that would benefit from the four-track system. After talking with Norcar, an established brand

64

DIGGERSLIVE

in Ireland, they were keen to work with him to establish a presence in the UK. The Norcar A7545 4t was the first successful mini loader prototype and over the last few years the company’s focus has been on developing and refining the track systems for mini loaders, predominantly Norcar, Avant and Multi-one, while also fitting track systems to other makes and models. All of these prototypes have allowed Andy to design track systems that are more sympathetic to the base machine. This led to a design ethos that meant no modification to the base machine in terms of welding or drilling holes, etc. After the initial fitting, the track systems are easily removable to allow refitting of wheels should this be desired. This in turn allows Moorend to classify the track system as an interchangeable attachment. Alongside mini loader track systems, Moorend is also developing track systems for other dumpers and has almost reached the same stage as the mini loaders. The company is receiving interest from end users and OEMs alike. Always a challenge is the cost of these track systems, especially for four to 10

tonne dumpers, but despite all the recent political and COVID-related disruption to supply chains, Moorend is working towards achieving a more palatable price for this size of dumper. Moorend has been involved in diverse areas of operation from providing designs for boat launching tractors to a well-known lifeboat search and rescue charity, to adapting the Norcar tracked loaders for use in solar farm cleaning (below left). More recently, the Norcar tracked loaders have become popular with ground investigation/ drilling companies for low environmental impact and material handling capabilities on challenging sites. They have also been very successful when used on wetland creation projects where site access and ground conditions were challenging. These types of environments usually mean wheeled machines are out of the question, traditional skid steer machines could potentially cause more mess, and work might even have to stop. The fourtracks enable work to continue when ground conditions deteriorate. Moorend Limited has been going from strength to strength over the last few years and will soon be moving into larger premises to allow for faster production and higher stock levels of track systems for the mini loaders and ultimately, the dumpers. The market is young, but the company is seeing increased demand across the UK and the world for the tracked loaders and track systems to suit them. While these machines are not exactly mainstream yet, more sectors are starting to understand their benefit, versatility and adaptability in carrying out many roles, as well as the environmental impact for unstable or sensitive ground and sites. While Andy is clear about the benefits of four-tracked dumpers, he does not believe they will replace conventional two-tracked machines for every condition – there does remain a place for them in the market too.

Volt from the blue UK’s first 35-tonne Terex Fuchs MHL 850F electric material handlers out on long term contract hire

66

DIGGERSLIVE

For the last decade, Contract Plant Rental has been providing bespoke contract hire solutions to a wide variety of sectors, satisfying the specific needs of customers nationwide. It is proud to provide the latest machinery from the industry’s leading manufacturers and suppliers, and these latest two Fuchs material handlers are no exception. The UK’s first Terex Fuchs electric powered material handlers, supplied by Blue Machinery (Central) Ltd landed on long term hire with Lancashire Renewables Ltd recently, and the company wasted no time putting them straight to work. The first electric machine will be feeding Lancashire Renewables’ waste plant in Thornton while the second will be loading MSW waste at its site in Fleetwood. As local authorities and businesses nationwide look to meet net zero emissions targets, Lancashire Renewables Ltd welcomes the UK’s first fully electric 35-tonne waste handlers to the industry. Today the attitude to electric and battery powered vehicles and machinery is changing rapidly, with many businesses already investing in electric powered cars, vans, sweepers and refuse trucks. Supplied by Blue Machinery (Central) Ltd via national contract hire specialists Contract Plant Rental, Lancashire Renewables Ltd looks set to make an impact with its new electric machines. Lancashire Renewables Ltd’s Procurement Manager, Alistair Pope explains: “Following an open and successful tender, Contract Plant Rental fully understood and supported our operational requirements to the fullest extent, with its selection of the Fuchs MHL850F promising to be a formidable piece of equipment. Lancashire Renewables Ltd is excited at the prospect of a continued relationship with Contract Plant Rental and the support to move towards more environmentally friendly equipment.” In addition to the increasing drive to reduce emissions across the country, the recently announced abolition of red diesel, a popular fuel used in the heavy machinery sector, means that come April 2022, many businesses are set to see a significant rise in their fuel bills. Sean McGeary of Blue Machinery (Central) Ltd says: “I feel that 2022 will see a significant increase in the demand for electric machines across the spectrum for traditional diesel hydraulic mobile machines. This is more so for machines where mobility is not the primary

www.diggers.live

EQUIPMENT

function e.g. material handlers, crushing, shredding and screening trains. “There is a convenience to have the machines with mobile capability, but they typically work on one site without regular movement. The demand will increase due to the change in diesel tax legislation as well as a general change in attitude across the construction associated sectors for decarbonisation and planning for the future.” The Fuchs MHL850F electric drive material handler is designed and built specifically for waste, scrap and port applications, destined to be reliable, economically efficient and environmentally friendly in one. On long term hire by Contract Plant Rental, the Fuchs material handlers offer zero emissions and significantly reduced noise and heat output. The low energy consumption enormously reduces the environmental impact and the low maintenance costs provide a huge benefit.

www.diggers.live

Not just better for the environment, the electric powered material handlers offer more efficient working hours, reduced operating costs, up to a 60 per cent saving compared to diesel powered equivalent machines, all without compromise on the performance and quality. The electric motor means low operation and service costs as oil changes, servicing of moving parts of the diesel engine and refuelling are no longer necessary. The electric cable lengths and cable reel designs on the Fuchs electric machines are adapted to each customer’s specific requirements. The machines can be equipped with an internal or external powerpack, to move the machine around the yard efficiently. As an additional benefit, full torque is immediately available, which gives more output than traditional diesel-powered machines. Richard Creighton, Operations Manager for Contract Plant Rental adds: “As electric cars become a staple

on our roads, it’s only natural that all diesel-powered plant will be heading in that direction. Its advantages in terms of running costs and operator health benefits make it the obvious choice for a wide and varied number of applications. “As custodians of the industry for a relatively short period of time, we owe it to the next generation to look for processes that not only look after our own health but also that of the planet. The waste industry continues to spearhead the move from landfill to recycling, the move to electric machines powered by carbon neutral solar and wind power will be a natural progression from diesel-powered predecessors. Saving money on fuel with the aim of zero emissions.” Set on creating a cleaner and more sustainable future together, Contract Plant Rental looks forward to working with suppliers and customers alike nationwide to help do its bit in combating climate change.

Polish waste and recycling company invests in Doosan Until recently ZUO International, the waste and recycling company based at Kunowice in Poland, used only wheel loaders. However, when the opportunity arose to invest in new mobile equipment, the company decided to purchase a material handler for the first time, a new Doosan DX250WMH‑5 wheeled model. ZUO International was established thanks to the investments and capital of Sirius Finance S.A. (Luxembourg) and provides comprehensive waste management, recovery and disposal services. The new Doosan was bought in response to the growing waste stream and to improve processes.

70

DIGGERSLIVE

Rafał Kościukiewicz, Operations Manager of ZUO International said: “With an additional unit, it is much easier to manage the machines in a way that guarantees their optimal use and best performance. This is why we didn’t buy another wheel loader, but rather a material handler. “This machine enables us to easily sort materials from a waste heap or load waste into the shredder with precision, because the operator, when located several metres above ground level, can clearly see the inside of the working chamber and can properly distribute the load.”

Competitive tender The decision was made on the basis of a tender procedure in which five companies participated. The best proposal was presented by Grausch i Grausch Maszyny Budowlane Sp. z o.o., the exclusive Authorized Doosan Dealer in Poland. The proposed machine met all the technical criteria set by ZUO International and had the most attractive price. Rafał Kościukiewicz said: “The DX250WMH‑5 model perfectly meets our needs. Its high performance and range in excess of 11 metres make the machine a perfect tool for handling even the heaviest materials. The new machine is used to load green waste into a shredder and screening unit, but we know – based on previous experience from other facilities – that it can also handle bulk waste.” Other factors that led to the selection of the offer from Grausch i Grausch Maszyny Budowlane were, Kościukiewicz said: “The six-cylinder, six-litre engine, relatively large for this class of machine, provides the best operating parameters. We were also impressed by the low noise level in the cab, much lower than in the machines from the competitors.” Initially, ZUO International was concerned about a drop in shredder loading efficiency, as the wheel loader used so far has a four-cubic-metre bucket, while

www.diggers.live

PURCHASES the new material handler is equipped with a semi-open five‑finger gripper with a capacity of 0.6 cubic metres. These fears were completely unfounded, Kościukiewicz now knows. The new machine is fast and guarantees shorter work cycles, so the work efficiency is comparable. Summarising the situation, he said: “The Doosan material handler meets our expectations and we are very satisfied with it. It does what it’s supposed to. Our operator likes working in it because of the noticeable power reserve and spacious, comfortable cab.” Local partnership Rafał Kościukiewicz also speaks positively about the Doosan dealer: “The machine was delivered on time, and the cooperation with the sales representative and service offer were perfectly satisfactory. However, this is not a surprise, as two years ago we purchased a Doosan DX300LC-5 crawler excavator from Grausch i Grausch, so we have already had the opportunity to work with them. The machine has worked over 5,000 hours so far, but thanks to professional, regular maintenance it is

still in perfect condition and hasn’t had any problems. We are very satisfied with Grausch i Grausch’s services.” Proven technology The DX250WMH‑5 25-tonne material handler was added to the Doosan range at the beginning of 2019. It is based on the Doosan 21‑tonne DX210W‑5 wheeled excavator. It was designed for the toughest applications, such as handling scrap metal. A factory-installed electrical generator used to power the electromagnet eliminates the need for modifications, and additional features, such as cab guards, frame guards, additional work lights and

solid rubber tyres increase the safety of waste handling. The DoosanCONNECT telematics system is standard for the DX250WMH-5 machine and comes with a three‑year subscription. It sends location information and a full range of machine operational information to the owner, dealer and Doosan. This information is sent with the help of a simple user interface, accessible online via a web-enabled computer or smartphone. The telematics system enables owners to monitor their Doosan machinery and effectively manage maintenance to reduce general operating costs.
