An unintentional locally to us themed issue where we celebrate fellow West Sussex business BPH’s 50th anniversary as well as our regular ‘Business Insider’ Q&A with Ryan Ferguson, UK Sales Manager a further 25 miles away with Dorking’s Bucher Municipal.

I am sure being connected to us on the socials you would have seen the plethora of post demolition awards excitement which continues as of today the event almost certainly moves to London next year and if you offer services to the demolition industry then you may just want to get involved next year.

Next week I will be on my travels once again amongst 12,000 others for the annual RWM Letsrecycle Live event at the NEC for some serious networking (hic) and I hope to see some of you there once again.

We need immediate action from government to introduce a business energy price cap and reduce the VAT on business energy bills.

Supply chain challenges remain critical, and this has been further impacted by strike action at ports – many businesses will be looking at ‘reshoring’, which could futureproof them against future supply chain issues but ‘moving manufacturing closer to home’ will require the government to facilitate with further tax breaks making it more achievable to invest in local facilities, new technology, strategy replanning and of course, a company’s most important asset – people. There’s certainly a lot to be done and we as a sector have a considerable wishlist – and will be actively talking to HMG to expedite the reforms we as an industry desperately need.

confidence and positive, clear signals to potential investors. Introducing a longterm capital allowance regime will drive investment in greener technologies, and clean technology, which will in turn reduce energy consumption.

The government has committed to achieving net zero by 2050. It has also stated that its target is to decarbonise the power system by 2035. It has been estimated that around £40bn per year would be required (on average) to be invested in new low carbon and digital infrastructure over the next ten years. There is a significant gap between the government’s objectives and the practical policy that is needed to provide

On the issue of rising energy bills, Truss says she will “deliver” when it comes to crisis by not only dealing with bills but also the longterm supply issues – this must be extended to and include businesses.

The rising energy costs have been compounded by the steep price increases in fuel, although this has stabilised at source, it’s not being passed on to the consumer. The construction industry is also bearing the brunt two-fold with the end of the red-diesel rebate.

Recent months have seen setback after setback, which is crippling UK businesses. Soaring energy costs and the recent announcement that the price cap is not being extended to businesses was yet another blow. Companies are fearing their energy costs could go up by as much as 300%, which is simply not sustainable.

As we welcome Liz Truss as our new Prime Minister, we as an industry are looking for swift action to protect our sector from irreparable damage. Truss is presented with the opportunity to transform the construction sector, ensure our industry is fit for the future and provide the necessary support to lead us on the path to net-zero emissions by 2050.

Globally we are all impacted by the material shortage and the fact that natural resources are limited. While on the other hand there is a necessity for new infrastructure. These conditions have urged companies to find alternatives, to reuse as much as possible and transform waste into reusable materials. The MB Crusher attachment offers the opportunity to recover material while simplifying logistics and reducing operational costs. It is a savvy option.

Our core business is jaw crusher buckets. It was the first product we created, moreover, we were the first to make and patent it. We have the biggest range of crusher buckets suitable for mini excavators from 8 to over 70 t. The is also a line suitable for backhoe loaders, skids and telehandlers. Whatever the carrier there will be a unit suitable for it.

Products

MB Crusher units are strictly related to the carrier they are installed on. Any new technology that cuts the carbon footprint of the carrier will benefit our units and we encourage companies to use our attachments instead of standalone machines as it will substantially cut CO2 emissions.Weare constantly saying that companies can drastically reduce the number of trucks in and out of the construction site by using MB Crushers. As a company, we are also very attentive in our daily operations. To name one example, we have photovoltaic panels installed in our premises for a clean energy source.

It transforms any carrier into a mobile jaw crusher, with the advantage that it can be used in remote areas and confined spaces, offering the possibility to carry out a task in the one-man one-machine module.

At bauma 2022, SENNEBOGEN will launch the first batterypowered telescopic crawler crane: the 653 E Electro Battery. The new 50-tonne battery powered crane combines the benefits of battery technology with the proven advantages of the telescopic crawler crane concept. This means you work completely emission-free and remain maximally flexible thanks to the Dual Power Management System.

The machine, developed in collaboration with Dutch dealer Van den Heuvel, forms the first battery-powered telescopic crawler crane in the range.

that can be operated both in battery-only mode and while charging from the mains. As soon as the machine is connected to the mains, the mains power is used for lifting activities, excess power fed into the system simultaneously recharges the batteries. Thus, in the future, you will not only continue to benefit on the construction site from the flexibility of the telescopic crawler crane itself, which is characterised by unique off-road mobility and manoeuvrability – even with a load on the hook – but now combine this with the technological advantages of SENNEBOGEN battery technology.Notonly is the 653 Electro Battery fossil fuel free, it’s also quieter and operates with less vibration than its diesel-powered counterparts. The machine has the added benefit of reduced service requirements since maintenance procedures such as engine oil changes are completely eliminated.

Through the close contact of the dealer Van den Heuvel with Dutch crane rental companies and construction companies, valuable market requirements from the progressive Dutch market were brought into the development partnership.

The best package on the market Nick Elliott, Managing Director of Elliotts (Cheltenham), said: “We have been buying Doosan machines for a number of years and the new DX380LC-7 crawler excavator and DL320-7 wheel loader are the latest. We choose the Doosan brand because it is a guarantee of excellent, dependable equipment backed by the expertise and fantastic service and support provided by Charlie Cook and the rest of the team at Kellands.”

Elliotts (Cheltenham) Ltd, based in Bishops Cleeve near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, has been providing aggregates services to the area for well over 100 years. From early beginnings making deliveries by horse and cart, the company has now added the very latest in quality equipment with the purchase of a new Doosan DX380LC-7 40 t crawler excavator and DL320-7 wheel loader for use in the company’s quarrying and recycled aggregate businesses, respectively. The new Doosan machines were supplied by Authorised Doosan Dealer Kellands (Plant Sales) Ltd.

Stage V machines bring major enhancements

The new Stage V excavator and wheel loader build on the very successful design of the Stage IV machines. They introduce major enhancements in operator comfort, machine controllability, productivity, uptime and return on investment, with a strong focus on low fuel consumption, increased power, robustness and versatility.

The mobile crusher moves between Perton Quarry and Elliotts’ main aggregates recycling operation outside Cheltenham. Here it joins the new Doosan DL320-7 wheel loader to be part of the fleet of equipment used at the site, where construction waste such as raw concrete and rubble is sorted and processed to produce 6F5 aggregates.

The excavator is powered by the Scania DC09 Stage V compliant diesel engine, providing 240 kW at 1,800 RPM. It features Doosan’s innovative D-ECOPOWER technology, providing operators with lower fuel consumption and higher productivity, as well as smoother controls.

The machine has a digging depth of 8,165 mm, a digging reach of 11,930 mm and digging height of 10,940 mm. The digging force over the bucket is 25.9 t and the digging force over the arm is 16 t.

The new Doosan excavator is working at Perton Quarry in Tarrington in Herefordshire, which is owned by the Elliotts group. Working at the face, it loads blasted material into a mobile crusher to produce 6F2 aggregates. The DX380LC-7 is also combined with a breaker to reduce larger pieces of rock that come off the quarry face during blasting.

With a standard bucket capacity of 3.3 m3, the DL320-7 is part of Doosan’s award-winning new DL-7 wheel loader range. The machine is powered by the new Doosan DL08V Stage V 6-cylinder engine, with an output of 202 kW at 1,800 RPM. Increased bucket capacity

Using the new Doosan Smart Key system on the control panel in the cabs, an operator can start the machines using a keyless device, helping to prevent machine theft. The Smart Key system provides remote door control, door lock and unlock, door release, searching and other functions.

Topcon Positioning helps relocate Old Salts RFC

O’Brien Contractors Ltd has used its civil engineering and construction expertise, coupled with its extensive sports development experience, to deliver a complete relocation of the Old Saltleians Rugby Football Club.

Commonly known as Old Salts, the club is relocating for the third time in its 84-year history. Plans for the HS2 development run across the existing Old Salts ground, meaning the club’s pitches and clubhouse have moved to a new site in Water Orton, Warwickshire. With the vast amount of surveying, earthworks and logistics needed on the project, O’Brien Contractors turned to technology from Topcon Positioning GB.

We’ve worked with Topcon for some years now and we’ve always received expert support to maximise the potential of our equipment, and it was no different on this project. “We opted for the Topcon MC-Max machine control technology as it is fitted without masts, has less cabling and there is no requirement for GNSS receivers or prisms to be installed or dismantled. Ultimately, there’s a reduced need for our team to interfere with the machines, meaning there’s much less risk of an accident occurring.”

UK to move to the innovative web-based platform, which provides remote access and support to every machine connected to the system including file transfers, messaging, reporting and analytics. This means downtime is dramatically reduced as issues can be resolved in real time without the need for on-site technical support. Instead, engineers can troubleshoot operator queries remotely and ensure work continues with minimal delay.

With the reduced machine hours needed to complete the job when using Topcon machine control, fuel use is greatly reduced, meaning lower costs and lower carbon footprint. Furthermore, the increased accuracy of the technologies reduces the risk of costly mistakes and the requirement for reworks.

that was not detected in the early stages of development – the layer of topsoil at the new site was significantly deeper than it had appeared on initial site surveys. O’Brien Contractors was able to add the new data into Sitelink3D v2 and plan budgets, timings and resources, automatically synching the new data to the relevant machines working on site with no delay to the plant operations, avoiding an expensive break in the project.

O’Brien Contractors reaped the benefits of Sitelink3D v2, rendering a 3D model in the tendering stages of the project to help demonstrate the works that were to be carried out. The software’s data management ecosystem allowed teams to quickly make alterations to the model to coincide with real-time information throughout the application process, and ultimately gave the team an edge against competitors.Onceworks had started, an unexpected challenge arose when the team found a difference in ground material

Minimising the impact

Fundamental to the success of the project was the ability for O’Brien Contractors to carry out the works with minimal disruption and impact to the local environment, given the site’s close proximity to a busy residential area. Using Topcon’s MC-Max and Sitelink3D v2 machine control workflow, the team has been able to synchronise data between the site and office without the need for engineers to travel between the two, with the reduced traffic to site meaning less disruption for local residents.

INTERVIEW

QHave you been involved with any interesting jobs or projects?

www.diggers.liveDIGGERS 92LIVE

I have always had an interest in mechanics, mainly cars due to being involved in motorsport as a child. By chance, I happened to see a role advertised for working on hydraulics on cranes and lorries. I went for it and the rest is history.

I’ve been in the industry for almost 20 years. I started out when I was 18, working on lorry loader cranes, which I did for around five years until I got my first mobile hose technician role.

QHow long have you been in the industry and how did you start out?

with Anthony Baxter, Mobile Hose Technician at Hydroscand UK

QWhat initially attracted you to the role?

I would say working at the Eurotunnel maintenance depot at Folkestone, piping a press in the Rolls Royce nuclear submarine department and working on quarry machinery at a quarry in Leicestershire.

On the job

Anthony Baxter has been working as a Mobile Hose Technician at Hydroscand’s Nottingham branch since June 2021. He spoke Diggers LIVE about why he works in hydraulics, what attracted him to the industry and what his current role entails. Here’s what he had to say.

Some examples of machinery include CAT 992, CAT 777, Komatsu 1250 and Hitachi 890. My day-to- day jobs range from making and replacing small hoses to large two-inch hoses to keep the quarry in operation.Withthe help of our onsite container workshop, which we installed, I have been able to complete several jobs. I have replaced 1¼-inch hose with cat flanges on a CAT 992 Large Wheel Loader. I have removed the floor plates and the seat to gain access to the hoses and then replaced three hoses of a CAT D8. I made and replaced hoses for the transmission of a CAT 777.

What do you find most rewarding in your work? Which parts of the work are most challenging?

Q

The most rewarding part of the job is knowing that I keep machines running with little downtime. The biggest challenge is keeping a large fleet of 30 plus machines operational.

A Cat 775 broke down on the main quarry access road, and on inspection, I found that the main fuel pipe from the pipe to the tank had been rubbing on the main transmission hose, which resulted in both hoses bursting. So, I replaced the ¾” fuel hose and 11¼” transmission hose, all without leaving the site.

Q

Tell us about your day-to-day work

INTERVIEW

My job today mainly entails working on large quarry machinery for our customer at a quarry in Leicestershire.

BPH at 50

HISTORY

In 1972, a young farmer, David Bastable from West Sussex, noticed a gap in the market for plant hire. Despite no previous business experience in the construction industry, he took a leap of faith and purchased a Massey MF50 digger, creating his own company Bastable Plant Hire hiring out the machine and his operator services. That leap of faith paid off and, today – in its 50th anniversary year, BPH owns more than 360 machines, 20 HGV and commercial vehicles (including the new Volvo FH16 globetrotter), offers 500+ attachments, and employs more than 200 staff members across four UK sites.BPH Attachments started out selling and hiring other brands’ attachments. However, In 2010, BPH formed a new relationship with PRODEM attachments, a brand that was already synonymous with quality across Europe and an upcoming

HISTORY www.diggers.live DIGGERSLIVE 97

After purchasing his first machine in 1972, David’s business plan was simple – he pitched his digger availability and operator skills to general construction sites and local councils, helping with standard infrastructure projects such as footpaths and roadways around Sussex. Following success as a one-man band and experiencing a clear demand for his type of machine and services, David purchased a second Massey MF50B digger to extend his offering. In 1980, after finishing an apprenticeship in the tool hire industry, David’s son, Simon Bastable, joined the business; BPH was now a family-run business.In1987, David sadly passed away, leaving Simon to take on the BPH reins. Thanks to organic growth and reinvestments of BPH profits, Simon

star in the UK market, becoming its sole UK and Ireland distributor

was able to expand the business offering once again, purchasing its first tracked excavator, a Poclain 60 – one of the most popular machines in the UK at the time. This purchase, and subsequent purchases, combined with the hard work of the staff members that joined BPH over the years, made a significant impact and today, the plant side of the business now owns 360 excavators from 1-40 tonnes including dozers, dump trucks, rollers, and site dumpers.Itwasn’t until 2001 that BPH ventured into the attachments side of the business. Simon’s son, Matthew, had just left college after completing his business studies course. He joined the BPH family business, gaining experience in the workshop and working alongside his dad to understand the business model. With a new generation of Bastable drive in the company, the synergy between plant hire and attachments was identified and became too obvious to ignore. As such, BPH Attachments was born. It was also at this point that the company launched its new workshop and on-site servicing offering for customers’ own machines and attachments (not only those purchased or hired through BPH), making full use of BPH’s two-acre workshop site in Billingshurst, West Sussex. BPH Attachments started out selling and hiring other brands’ attachments. However, it became evident that the products they were initially offering to customers were definitely not in keeping with the company’s reputation for supplying good quality. Matthew was not deterred and after years spent scouring the market he found the perfect solution. In 2010, BPH formed a new relationship with PRODEM attachments, a brand that was already synonymous with quality across Europe and an upcoming star in

The incredible rate of growth that BPH saw with these distributor acquisitions, along with the word-of-mouth reputation about the quality of products and level of customer service the company provides, has meant that BPH has been involved in a number of high-profile projects over the years. These have included the Hindhead tunnel, the Thames Crossrail, HS2 and Tideway, and the demolition of multiple power stations across the UK to name a few.Matthew Bastable believes customer service is key to BPH’s success, saying: “From the moment my grandfather founded the business in 1972 right through to today, our reputation in the industry has been the key to our success.

the UK market, becoming its sole UK and Ireland distributor.

HISTORY DIGGERS 98LIVE www.diggers.live

It was this hugely successful relationship with PRODEM that propelled BPH Attachments into the spotlight and Matthew quickly appointed his first area sales manager to handle the surge in sales calls. The company grew exponentially and in 2016 it opened its second BPH Attachments depot in Coalville, Leicestershire (a site that moved to bigger premises in 2021 and now employs 11 staff members dedicated to serving the area). The company’s attachments offering grew as successfully as its business model and soon other brands including La Bounty, OilQuick, Dynaset, Berti and Augertorque were eager to join the BPH distributor family. These key business milestones all contributed to BPH Attachments’ continued success, enabling the company to expand further and open another two depots – Bristol (2021) and London (2022). At the same time, the hire and servicing sides of business were enjoying equally impressive achievements.

• Flexxaire fans provide more net engine power

Cooling packages and conventional fans are sized and designed to keep your engine running on the hottest day of the year with your engine at full power. This means that for the vast majority of the time, the fan is blowing significantly more air and using more power and fuel than is needed. Flexxaire fans deliver only as much airflow as required, creating exponential fuel savings, saving fuel compared to conventional fans, or increasing productivity by freeing up power for your machine. cleaning, likelihood of engine fire, Cleaning on demand for extra unscheduled purging.

At an average ambient temperature of 15°C, the Flexxaire fan’s power draw is reduced by 75%, resulting in significant fuel savings.

Radiator cleaning system

With fast pitch reversing in under one second, the Flexxaire Fan purges debris from the radiator, effectively cleaning the radiator system. This ensures your radiator is kept clean and operational at all times. It can be programmed to purge at automatic intervals or manually with the touch of a button. Reversing happens at full speed by hydraulic or pneumatic actuation of the internal cylinder rotating instantly the fan blades from a working position over the neutral into reversing and back.

• Lower energy consumption equals savings on fuel

If available, engine power is prioritised over fuel savings; the additional power can be directed to the engine, resulting in high net engine power.

All hub components are machined from solid material to ensure perfect balance without any voids or porosity in material structure. All joints are sealed with high-quality O-rings. The mechanical spring-loaded fail-safe feature ensures maximum airflow if control is lost. Perfect Pitch Sensor provides accurate pitch feedback and is designed to last longer than the engine—operating up to 20Gs of vibration, from minus 40° to 120°C, and exposure to debris and caustic fluids.

The Flexxaire Fan Airflow System provides total control of airflow, keeps radiators clean, maximises engine performance, saves fuel and is robustly built and maintenance-free.

It is as if the UK construction industry missed a memo; as if the entire sector agreed unilaterally not to switch on the TV or radio and to ignore the newspaper headlines. If the figures for the month of July 2022 had showed a slowing in demand, no-one would have been remotely surprised. So despite all that is going on in the world, the UK construction sector could ease into the summer holidays safe in the knowledge that it has an order book that is looking good well into the autumn. All of which goes to prove that if you can keep your head while all about you are losing theirs, construction might be the career for you.

Alsouses.benefitting from a good month in the office sector is Lendlease, which took the number three position with four new projects valued at £503m. The company has secured the £450m contract to transform the former ITV London studios. Project Vista centres around a 26-storey office building that is connected to two buildings of 13 and six storeys. Alongside high-quality office space, including affordable workspace, the scheme will create new cafes and restaurants, cultural venues and green spaces.Morgan Sindall claimed the number four position on the BCLive league table while simultaneously topping the chart for the highest number of projects; securing an astonishing 35 new contract awards worth a combined £388m. The most significant of these is the £110m refurbishment and repair contract for Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council. The 10-year contract will include the repair and maintenance, out of hours services, void and planned works of 9,500 councilowned properties across the council region.

Any fears that the Midlands would see a decline with the end of the Commonwealth Games preparations have been allayed with the East and West Midlands reporting £160m and £1bn respectively. The regional news was less upbeat north of the border with Scotland slipping back to just £76m across 18 projects.

The project is a landmark regeneration scheme that includes 1,300 new homes and 37,000 m2 of commercial space, including an extensive selection of retail, leisure and healthcare facilities. The office sector finally wrestled the top sector crown away from housebuilding with a tally of £1.7bn compared to housing’s £1.4bn. Also enjoying an upbeat month was the roads sector which jumped to £862m, seemingly as the government begins preparations for the next general election. Yet those two other vote winning sectors – health and education – continue to lag behind with just £159 and £326m.
