EDITORIAL TEAM

WELCOME Where has the time gone? Somehow we hurtling towards March and we have the second issue of Diggers LIVE for 2021 completed. I’m not quite sure where the time has gone, but thankfully it has been a very busy eight weeks in the UK construction-wise, as a key sector to continue working throughout this third lockdown. In between issues, Diggers LIVE was ‘in’ Malaga for Caterpillar’s exciting launch of its Next Generation excavators and HCS Coupler, which you can read about from page 24. Beyond the new norm of virtual working, we have managed to get ourselves on site this year. We were guests of Keltbray a couple of weeks ago on the former waste site at Decoy Farm in West Sussex, where the contractor is carrying out remediation works prior to the site’s redevelopment for commercial use. Diggers LIVE is currently working alongside them as they close in on completion. Expect a full write-up in the next issue. As this leader being is written, the Diggers LIVE team is preparing for a journey to the capital to wish all at Coyle Equipment Services the best for 10 years of incorporation, coinciding with the company being named as Epiroc’s dealer of the year. Diggers LIVE wants to be out much more, so please let us know of your launches, jobs and anything you think we can cover, it is your construction equipment magazine and we want to feature you and your equipment. We have some nice new kit on display in this issue. From Liebherr, we have its innovative LiTiU tilt unit, which allows fixed attachments to reach swing angles of two times 75 degrees. Combined with the fully automatic quick coupling system LIKUFIX, the tilt unit provides great comfort and efficiency advantages. The economy has had a tough time over the last 12 months, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is good news from the construction sector. Figures from the Construction Equipment Association show a one per cent increase in sales of construction equipment in December, year on year. JCB is recruiting 400 new employees as it predicts a surge in production. In another positive sign, JCB Finance has now passed the £50 million mark in its delivery of loans through the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS). Other innovative products featured in this issue are the compact Dragon LF750 and LF1000 lifters, which enable the user to transport up to 750kg and one tonne through gaps of 700 and 840mm respectively. We hope you enjoy all the features included in this issue and don’t hesitate to get in touch with your feedback or ideas for features.

NOMINATIONS INVITED FOR CPA STARS OF THE FUTURE AWARDS 2021 Nominations are now open for the Construction Plant-hire Association’s (CPA) Stars of the Future apprentice and trainee awards for 2021. A total of six national titles are up for grabs and nominations are welcomed from plant-hire companies, manufacturers, contractors, suppliers and others operating in the construction plant sector with apprentices and trainees in their workforce. The Stars of the Future winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Thursday 1 July 2021. The closing date for nominations is Wednesday 31 March and nomination forms are available now at www.cpa.uk.net. Stars of the Future is a national awards scheme for apprentices and trainees in the construction plant-hire industry, organised by the CPA, the leading trade association for the planthire sector in the UK. The CPA has over 1,700 members who supply 85 per cent of hired plant to the construction industry. The awards categories for 2021 comprise Plant Mechanic of the Year (Level 2); Plant Technician of the Year (Level 3); Plant Operative of the Year; Lifting Technician of the Year; Hire Controller of the Year; and a brand new category, Plant Installer of the Year. The CPA has decided to introduce the Plant Installer of the Year award due to the number of trainees undertaking what is a dedicated occupation that builds, installs and in most cases, dismantles plant from a component base to one configured for operational activities. These would typically include tower cranes, crawler cranes, mobile cranes, hoists,

6

DIGGERSLIVE

tunnelling and material processing equipment. Although a formalised apprenticeship for this occupation has yet to be devised, the CPA entry criteria requires that applicant trainees are on an employer-programmed training programme of at least 12 months duration and working towards or holding either the Plant Installations NVQ or SVQ or other form of formal occupational competence-based qualification for the machine type. A training programme for tower crane and hoist installers has been devised by the respective interest groups in conjunction with CITB and the Plant Installer occupation is listed as a CSCS category. Kevin Minton, CPA Chief Executive said: “Stars of the Future recognises the UK’s most promising apprentices and trainees in the construction plant sector and the awards scheme is now in its ninth year. Each year it has grown in stature and it is now firmly established as the premier event of the construction plant sector for recognising and rewarding the skills and calibre of the industry’s apprentices and trainees. “Last year we had over 70 nominees for Stars of the Future and the standard of entries was exceptional. We’re delighted that we’ve been able to extend the awards programme even further this year by introducing another new national title of CPA Plant Installer of the Year. We’d like to urge employers and companies in the

construction plant sector to nominate apprentices and trainees who they believe should be recognised as stars in the making.” Stars of the Future winners will be in contention for a number of prizes, as well as national recognition. Previous prizes have included Snap-on tool kits, iPads and an all-expenses paid trip to Germany to visit a Liebherr crane manufacturing plant. The national winners for Stars of the Future 2020 were Adam Rees of Machinery Movements and Crane Hire (Plant Mechanic of the Year), Rhys Nigel John of Marubeni-Komatsu (Plant Technician of the Year), Danielle Taylor of Flannery Plant Hire (Plant Operative of the Year), Luke Reddish of Wolffkran (Lifting Technician of the Year), Iveta Tomasevska of Flannery Plant Hire (Hire Controller of the Year), Senghan Carr of L Lynch Plant Hire (CPA Award for Best Personal Statement) and Scott Laurenson of EMN Plant (Judges’ Special Award). Sponsorship opportunities are available for Stars of the Future 2021. For further information, please contact Lisa Collins on 07968 840 390 or lisa@lisacollinscommunications.co.uk.

EXECUTIVE HIRE SHOW POSTPONES TO FEBRUARY 2022

8

DIGGERSLIVE

The organisers of the annual Executive Hire Show have taken the difficult decision to postpone the 2021 event by 12 months. This year’s event had already been delayed by eight weeks from its original dates in February due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, ongoing public health concerns have made cancelling this year’s show unavoidable. The UK’s premier hire event will now be held on 9 and 10 February 2022 at its established home at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. In arriving at this decision, the EHS team surveyed exhibitors and key visitors. The response rate was impressive, with 80 per cent replying and 60 per cent of exhibitors saying they wanted to postpone the Executive Hire Show to 2022. Although this news is disappointing

www.diggers.live

NEWS

for the sector and the Executive Hire team, it is the right decision based on the feedback the show had received. Chris Moore, Executive Hire Show’s Publishing and Events Director, said: “It is with heavy hearts that we decided to move the event to 2022. Having surveyed our loyal exhibitors, this decision received the majority vote. We investigated all possibilities to stage the show in 2021, but the unpredictable nature of COVID-19 and ongoing uncertainties have made our decision unavoidable. We are 100 per cent committed to supporting our exhibitors, visitors and other personnel associated with hosting the event. Their health, safety and wellbeing must be our number one priority.” Gary McWilliam, Managing Director of the Hire Supply Company said: “This makes sense to me. The show is so important for the industry that postponing it is the right thing to do. If we have to miss a year because of the current restrictions, then when we get back together in February we can put on a really big event. Lots of people are going to want to attend, so it’s imperative that we have this connection and the show goes ahead.” Chris added: “Many of our customers told us that they have new products launching later this year, and we have exciting new plans to help them connect with our audience of active and engaged hirers. In the meantime, we have freshened up our media and marketing portfolio and widened the opportunities available to our partners reflecting emerging technologies, innovative products and the type of equipment that hirers are buying now. Secondly, later this year, we will hold a series of hire industry webinar events, using digital channels to help companies launch their new products. “And finally, when lockdown restrictions allow, we’re planning new-look Executive Hire Roadshows for Scotland (October) and the south west (December). These events will be less formal and more focused on new products and show only deals of the day.” The EHS plans to continue to engage with the show’s exhibitors and keep up to date with product launches and hire news via the Executive Hire Show website and social media channels. Chris concluded: “We are down, but we’re certainly not out – the show will be back in 2022, bigger and better than ever. Put February 9 to 10 2022 in your diary and the EHS team looks forward to seeing you all in person for a truly blockbuster Executive Hire Show 2022.”

JCB LAUNCHES RECRUITMENT DRIVE AS PRODUCTION SET TO SURGE

JCB is recruiting more than 400 additional UK shop floor employees as the company gears up for a surge in production. The construction equipment market has rebounded sharply after the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, which halted production at JCB factories around the world.

The company has now confirmed it is recruiting more than 400 additional agency employees in a variety of jobs, including assembly, welding and forklift truck drivers. In addition, JCB is giving permanent JCB contracts to up to 300 existing agency employees, including welders, fabricators and CNC machinists. JCB Chief Operating Officer Mark Turner said: “In March 2020 our orders dramatically disappeared overnight when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold and while we were able to protect our shop floor workforce, regrettably many staff positions were impacted. It took more than six months for the business to recover to production levels we last saw in March 2020. “This year has started strongly and our forecasts predict a continued solid recovery, with strong demand from mainland Europe and North America. This means we are now in a position to recruit many more shop floor colleagues and offer permanent JCB contracts to a large number of existing agency employees. After a tumultuous 12 months, this really is good news.”

JCB FINANCE MARKS £50 MILLION COVID-19 SUPPORT MILESTONE JCB Finance is marking a big milestone in its support of the UK construction industry during the coronavirus pandemic after delivering more than £50 million of loans. The vital cash has been distributed to the industry through the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) – designed to support the continued provision of finance to UK smaller businesses (SMEs) during the COVID-19 outbreak. As an accredited lender, JCB Finance has been assisting new and existing customers impacted by COVID-19, who need to invest in JCB equipment or other qualifying plant and vehicles. Through JCB Finance customers have been able to access the scheme, used to back a fixed rate hire purchase facility with a six month payment pause followed by 48 monthly instalments. The government will make a Business Interruption Payment to cover the first 12 months of interest payments and any charges levied by the lender.

12

DIGGERSLIVE

Among those who have successfully used the CBILS-backed facility is Monks Contractors, which has used it to invest in a new JCB JS20MH wheeled material handler and 30 new BMI ejector and walking floor trailers.

Monks Contractors Managing Director Chris Monk said: “The pandemic and lockdown made everyone feel uneasy. Some form of disruption was inevitable, but we must look forward. It is essential we continue to invest and maintain our fleet to deliver the best possible service to our customers, and the CBILS-backed Hire Purchase with JCB Finance has helped us to do this. “I have used JCB Finance for years and have a great relationship with them; they offer a good combination of personal service and easy, uncomplicated online services that help save me time.” The Chancellor of the Exchequer has announced a further extension to the CBILS scheme to 31 March 2021, giving more time for businesses impacted by COVID to apply. Successful applicants have six months from receiving the loan offer to draw down the facility, so this news is a welcome relief to those wishing to secure access to funds through to the autumn.

UK Q4 CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT SALES SHOW ONE PER CENT INCREASE YEAR-ON-YEAR Retail sales of construction and earthmoving equipment continued to show a strong recovery at the end of 2020. Sales in December were 15 per cent ahead of December 2019 levels, and this was sufficient to edge Q4 sales to one per cent above the same quarter in 2019 (graph 1, above). Construction activity continued to recover in the second half of the year and this supported improving demand for equipment sales. In 2020 overall, sales of construction equipment were 24.5 per cent below 2019 levels, at just over 24,000 units for the year. While this is still a significant year-on-year decline due to COVID-19, it is less than feared, with sales having declined by 38 per cent in the first half of the year. The second chart shows a ranking of sales for the major equipment types,

www.diggers.live

showing the size of the decline in 2020 compared with 2019. This highlights that the most popular equipment type, mini and midi excavators up to 10 tonnes, saw stronger demand last year than all of the other equipment types. Sales of these excavators were only 5.5 per cent below 2019 levels, after sales in the last four months of the year overtook levels in the previous year. Strong demand from the house building market is reported to have been one of the key factors supporting demand for smaller machines. In contrast, sales of the other major equipment types were in a range from 28 per cent to 57 per cent below 2019 levels. The construction equipment statistics exchange also covers sales on a regional basis in the UK and Northern Ireland. The map shows the percentage differences for sales in the main regions in 2020 compared with 2019. Sales in Wales, the North West, and the East Midlands were the strongest, in a range from only 14 per cent to 17 per cent below 2019 levels. At the other end of the scale, the weakest sales were in the North East, at over 40 per cent below 2019 levels.

Sales in the Republic of Ireland are recorded separately, and after recovering in the second half of the year, showed only a 14 per cent decline on 2019 levels for the full year. Similar to the UK, mini/midi excavators were the best performing equipment type. The construction equipment statistics exchange is run by Systematics International Ltd. This scheme is run in partnership with the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), the UK trade association.

Police Constable ‘Hutch’ Hutchings of Northamptonshire Police is the first CESAR Champion of this year and joins the prestigious ‘Champions Club’. his commitment to drive down rural machinery crime. Dave Luscombe, Head of Special Projects at the CEA, presented the award to PC Hutchings in a socially distanced handover ceremony. Hutch said: “During my career, I’ve worked in various roles ranging from road crime, road policing and now rural crime officer and a vehicle and plant machinery examiner. One of the biggest issues while policing in these roles is being able to identify the unidentifiable. Where fitted, the CESAR scheme allows simple identification and I’m glad to see it expanding across a variety of brands and machines.” PC Hutchings has run a number

of ‘CESAR-IT’ days across the UK to encourage local machine owners to protect their older machines with CESAR. Providing advice and information on how to fit CESAR to owners of machines through the dedicated CESAR network. CESAR, powered by Datatag, can be fitted to any construction or agriculture machine that is at risk of theft. The tamper-evident label acts as an initial deterrent and the multiple layers of technology help to identify the machine. All the owner and machine details are stored on the CESAR secure database for police to double-check any machine quickly and easily.

HYUNDAI DISTRIBUTOR TAYLOR AND BRAITHWAITE EXPANDS SALES TERRITORY ACROSS THE NORTH Hyundai is pleased to announce that distributor Taylor and Braithwaite, based in Sandford in Cumbria, has expanded its territory to include, South Yorkshire. The new area is in addition to the company’s existing patch, which covers the rest of the Yorkshire areas, Lancashire, Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, and Dumfries and Galloway. The change formed part of Hyundai Construction Equipment Europe’s strategy to realign dealer coverage in the UK, where South Yorkshire remained a ‘vacant territory’. Taylor and Braithwaite’s sales area already encompassed the three other Yorkshire regions, therefore it made perfect business sense to add South Yorkshire to its territory. Tony Reeves, UK and Ireland Sales Manager said: “Taylor and Braithwaite is a high performing Hyundai construction equipment dealer. The company has an excellent sales provision in the Yorkshire areas and currently offers great service and sales support in the county. The territory expansion for T&B will give customers in the region improved accessibility and availability to the Hyundai range.” Taylor & Braithwaite Sales Director, Ian Burton, said: “This is a natural expansion of our territory. Bev Walker, our Yorkshire Sales Manager, has

already built up many contacts within the Yorkshire region. Combined with our regional team of service engineers, I am extremely confident we can continue to support both existing and new customers throughout the lifetime of their machine purchased from Taylor & Braithwaite.” Taylor and Braithwaite has more than 50 years’ experience in supplying, servicing and maintaining construction, recycling and agricultural equipment throughout the north of England and

Scotland. The company was awarded the Hyundai dealership in 2010 and has sold more than 1,000 machines to date. Most recently, the business has developed further into the construction and recycling industries, including a partnership with vehicle dismantling attachment manufacturer, Powerhand. Taylor & Braithwaite’s expansion into South Yorkshire for Hyundai construction equipment was effective from 1 January 2021.

DIGGERSLIVE

Chambers Media and Diggers LIVE were among the invitees at Caterpillar’s January online European launch of the next generation of CAT demolition excavators. Due to the ongoing pandemic it was of course a socially distanced event, presented live from Caterpillar’s Malaga Demonstration and Learning Centre by Michael Loyer, Industry Segments and Work Tools Manager, Global Construction and Infrastructure division at Caterpillar. Speakers joined the press conference from around the world, starting with Brian Abbott, Worldwide Product Manager for Large Excavators. Abbot started by expressing his delight at having won the World Demolition Summit award for Manufacturer Innovation, Plant and Equipment for the CAT 352 UHD next generation high reach demolition machine. “I’m not sure I can put into words how excited I was when I heard the news that morning that we had won the award. It’s fantastic recognition of a lot of hard work by Caterpillar and the Caterpillar dealer team on the 352 UHD,” he said. “We are humbled to be recognised by the experts of demolition. We’re over the moon.” Speaking of the product, he emphasised the demolition-specific improvements that had been made: “The 352 UHD now reaches 28 metres high with a 3.7 tonne work tool.

That is the highest height to weight work tool ratio in the industry.” The event also took attendees on-site, where in a previously recorded segment, Giles Ronnet, Caterpillar Product Application Specialist spoke to customer Bruno Chastagner, General Manager of Chastagner Demolition, who had the opportunity to operate the first 352 UHD on his job-site in southern France. Chastagner emphasised the stability of the machine at height, due to its wider and longer undercarriage. He was also impressed by its ability to support heavier work tools, which was particularly important in the industrial demolition applications his company carried out. Finally, he mentioned the reduced fuel consumption of the machine. High reach operator Claude Riboulon confirmed these findings from the cab of the machine. Giles Ronnet then joined Loyer on stage to talk about the 340 UHD Next Generation, which boasts hydraulic variable gauge as an option, ranging from three to four metres to allow easier transportation; UHD or retrofit booms; electro-hydraulic controls; stability monitoring and a whopping work tool weight of up to 3,700kg. To top this off, the new machine has up to 15 per cent lower operating costs. The product was brought to market, Ronnet said, based on what customers told Caterpillar: “reducing fuel consumption and maintenance cost whilst improving performance,” he said, “and this is exactly what we did.” Highly efficient engine, controls and transmission of power result in up to 15 per cent lower fuel consumption and consequent emissions. Hydraulic oil

LARGING IT UP WITH THE NEXT GENERATION intervals went from 2,000 hours to 3,000 hours, while engine oil intervals went from 500 hours to 1,000 hours. These lead to a five per cent maintenance cost reduction. Summarising the UHD 340, he said: “You can tear down structures all day long with speed, precision and control. Caterpillar offers the best in class.” The final presentation was from Bas Timmers, Global Work Tool Specialist, who spoke about the Hydraulic Coupler S-interface (HCS). “The big advantage is that you do not leave the cab to swap work tools. Operators typically swap work tools between two and 20 times a day, so this makes it a safer solution.” Dedicated software depressurises the system automatically when the operator is exchanging and engaging the tool. “When swapping work tools, the operator does not need to leave the cab,” he said. “The coupler itself is also a very safe solution. We’ve got four features to ensure the tool remains with the coupler.” These are sensor technology; an additional flat area on the wedges; spring loaded wedges keeping the wedge in place in the case of loss of pressure; and a check valve in the cylinder. Timmers concluded by saying: “Caterpillar is unique in the market as we are able to provide a total solution to our customers in demolition.” The press conference concluded with questions from the virtual audience, including where the demolition excavators are produced (Akashi in Japan) and when the 340 UHD would be available in Europe, to which the answer was April 2021. In the second of its online product launches in January, coming from its Malaga Demonstration and Learning Centre Caterpillar launched its next generation large excavators. Chambers Media was delighted to be invited to take part in this virtual event. The press launch was compered by Alana Tubito, coordinating contributors from around the world, both from within Caterpillar and from outside the company. Interviews with external speakers included Al Cervero, Vice President Association of Equipment Manufacturers, speaking on what the future would look like in the region. Among other opinions, he expressed the view that data collection would be critical to improving performance and decreasing downtime. Rob Oliver, Chief Executive of the Construction Equipment Association (UK) spoke on critical trends and needs for customers or large projects. One of these highly topical projects is HS2, which it barely needs mentioning will continue to require the most upto-date plant for some time to come. The press conference then moved on to the main issue. The reveal of the next generation of large excavators, the CAT 352, 374 and 395. Jason Conklin, Vice President Caterpillar Global Construction and Infrastructure (GCI) and Corne Timmermans Industry Region Manager were the first to speak for CAT itself, with a broad presentation on Caterpillar and the next generation of excavators. One of the takeaways was

the sheer level investment the company is making in research and development. Speaking from Singapore, Brian Abbott, Worldwide Product Manager for Caterpillar Large Excavators, gave the lowdown on his division’s offering. Caterpillar had listened to its customers, he said, both by formally interviewing users and through general customer feedback. As a result, the new machines had been built to offer truly world beating performance and efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Both fuel and maintenance costs would be up to 20 per cent lower, and structural integrity was critical to the new machines, with thicker plates on the arms and more durable buckets – all while maintaining efficiency gains. The rest of the presentation was dedicated to in-depth walkarounds of the CAT 352, 374 and 395, demonstrating the improvements the company has made to its products. While there was much in the way of detail, presented both by Caterpillar’s on-the-ground experts and end users, the advantages of the new machines were in principle quite simple – a fact belying the attention to detail that has gone into every aspect. In short, the Next Generation large excavators were more efficient, more durable, safer, more comfortable and easier to use through technology and clever design. Which as Brian Abbot had said earlier, was all about helping customers make more money, without cost to the environment or working conditions.

CATERPILLAR ULTRA HIGH DEMOLITION EXCAVATOR REACHES THE PARTS OTHER EXCAVATORS CANNOT REACH The Cat 352 UHD Ultra High Demolition excavator is designed to handle difficult demolition of tall structures using a range of Cat demolition attachments, including multi-processors, grapples, shears and hydraulic hammers with the retrofit boom. The UHD front can be switched for a straight or bent (retrofit) boom position for lower-level demolition and earthmoving applications. This switch, with no special tool required, typically takes two people about 15 minutes. The 352 UHD features a variable-gauge undercarriage (hydraulically activated), as well as the Cat Active Stability Monitoring system, which continuously informs the operator of work tool position within a safe working range and warns when approaching stability limits.

Working parameters

In the UHD configuration, the 352 UHD provides 28 metres of vertical height to the work tool attachment pin, and 15.8 metres’ horizontal reach, when working with a 3.7-tonne tool. These ample specifications allow the 352 UHD to demolish structures eight or nine storeys high fast, with precision and control thanks to the electro-hydraulic control system. Undercarriage gauge is four metres for optimum stability when working, and three metres for transport with 0.6-metre track shoes. In retrofit straight boom configuration, the 352 UHD uses a 9.1-metre retrofit boom with a choice of 2.9 or 3.4-metre retrofit stick. Equipped with the longer stick and a 3.06 cubicmetre-bucket, the 352 UHD has a digging

www.diggers.live

depth of 6.7 metres and a maximum reach at ground level of 11.9 metres. The 352 models use the Cat C13 engine, rated at 408 horsepower (304 kW), and meeting EU Stage V/U.S. EPA Tier IV Final emissions standards. The C13 also is capable of operating on biodiesel up to B20. Three power modes in the machines allow the operator to match machine performance to the task at hand and a new high efficiency, hydraulic, reversing fan cools the engine on demand to help reduce fuel consumption. When using the retrofit boom, the machine can use the Cat GRADE with 2D grade control system, swing e-fencing and the Cat Payload onboard weighing system. The Payload system can be used with VisionLink (online telematics interface) to remotely manage production targets via the machine’s Product Link (telematics system).

Operator safety and comfort

The Cat demolition cab features a falling objects guard structure (FOGS) and includes front and roof laminated glass with a P5A impact rating. The cabs tilt 30 degrees upwards for an optimum line of sight to the work tool and a more productive and comfortable working position for the operator. The windshield and roof glass feature one-piece, parallel wipers with three intermittent settings with washer spray. A premium seat, heated and cooled, is standard. Rearview and right-hand-side view standard cameras provide clear images on the monitor. The left console tilts up for easy cab entry and exit, advanced viscous mounts

reduce cab vibration up to 50 per cent compared with previous excavator models and controls are easily accessible. UHD models are equipped to accept a worktool camera, which can be installed by the Cat dealer with a kit. Standard radio has USB ports and Bluetooth technology to connect personal devices and to make hands-free calls. In the cab, each joystick button can be programmed, including power mode, response and pattern, and these settings can be recalled using appropriate operator identification. An automatic hydraulic oil warm up feature quickly brings the system to operating temperature and helps prolong component life. A high resolution 10-inch touchscreen monitor allows fast navigation, including operating and maintenance tutorials.

Maintenance simplified

Extended service intervals help reduce maintenance costs. Ground-level hydraulic oil checks and fuel system water drains speed routine service. Filter life and maintenance intervals can be tracked via the in-cab monitor. All fuel filters can be changed at a synchronised 1,000 hours and oil and fuel filters are grouped on the right hand side of the machine for easy access. The engine air intake filter with pre-cleaner has double the dust holding capacity of the previous filter and the hydraulic oil filter provides improved filtration performance and anti-drain valves to keep oil clean when the filter is replaced at a 3,000-hour interval. Oil sampling ports simplify maintenance and allow for easy extraction of fluid samples for analysis.

S TYPE COUPLERS: BOOSTING PRODUCTIVITY, MAINTENANCE INTERVALS, AND KEEPING SAFETY A PRIORITY Cat Hydraulic Connecting S Type (HCS) couplers are changing the landscape for couplers, with the ability to switch between hydromechanical attachments and be fully operational in a matter of seconds, all while the operator is safe in the cab. Excavators of similar sizes can share attachments, with HCS couplers covering a wide range of machines from 311340 tracked and M314-M322 wheeled excavators. HCS couplers average 37 per cent better flow capability when compared to leading competitors. They are designed for high-flow performance suited to hydromechanical tools in demolition and in city earthmoving applications. The lower hydraulic restriction results in better machine fuel efficiency. With the minimal amount of time to transition between attachments, operators will be more inclined to switch attachments and use more task-appropriate attachments when needed. The internal quick disconnects average ten times better life when compared to leading competitors. The quick disconnect design prevents contamination of the hydraulic system, while the coupler design protects important hoses and components from damage inside the coupler. HCS couplers feature industry-leading sensor technology and multiple measures to keep attachments connected in the event of a hydraulic pressure loss. The coupler also gives visual and audible cues, as well as confirmation on the machine’s in-cab screen of a successful connection to the attachment. A complete list of Hydraulic Connecting S Type Couplers is coming soon to cat.com.

LIEBHERR DELIVERS FIRST R 934 G8 HYDRAULIC EXCAVATOR

Liebherr has delivered the first R 934 G8 crawler off the production line in France to Derbyshire civil engineering contractor Brad-Pave. The crawler excavator is a result of a collaboration between Liebherr and Leica Geosystems initiated last year, and it is equipped with the Leica 3D passive system, soon to be updated to include automatic inclination/rotation function. Brad-Pave, which employs just four people and specialises in road construction, deep drainage and earthmoving, was in the market to replace another manufacturer’s 30-tonne

excavator and a visit to the Liebherr stand at the Bauma show in Munich in 2019 was enough to convince director Paul Bradshaw that he’d found the ideal machine. Bradshaw said: “When I saw the new Generation 8 excavators, they just looked the part. It was immediately apparent that an already quality product had been massively improved. My mind was made up straight away.” While awaiting delivery, Mr Bradshaw began fine-tuning additional specification with GPS and Steelwrist to match the outgoing machine. However, he quickly

modified his plans when the partnership with Leica was announced and negotiations with Liebherr Great-Britain ensured the order could be amended to include the Leica option. With an operating weight of almost 38.5 tonnes, the machine arrived in the UK towards the end of 2020, when Steelwrist fitted what would be another world ‘first’, an X32 tiltrotator on 80mm pins, to take the total package to just over 40 tonnes. “We’ve used GPS guidance for a number of years and having the opportunity to have an integrated system

on a Liebherr excavator was an ideal scenario for us,” continued Bradshaw. “We are hoping that one of the benefits of taking this option will be the increased reliability of a built-in system. “We realised the benefits of using GPS many years ago. Not only does it do away with the requirement for traditional setting-out but it is almost 100 per cent foolproof. The addition of the Leica CoPilot system controlling the Steelwrist will just make any project that little bit quicker and more accurate.” A Liebherr spokesperson added: “The partnership between Liebherr and Leica

Geosystems announced in March 2020 enables us to offer our customers the expertise of both companies, allowing us to deliver more advanced and reliable solutions. Factory fitting has the advantage of ensuring high system reliability, thanks to the expertise of the team responsible for the installation.” The partnership between Liebherr and Leica Geosystems enables customers to buy Generation 6 and Generation 8 crawler and wheeled excavators with 2D or 3D control systems as an option. Brad-Pave was founded in 2004 and employs four people. The core

activities of this British company are in the civil engineering sector, in particular road construction, deep drainage and earthmoving. Leica Geosystems (part of the Hexagon Group) can trace its history to the first half of the 19th century and is your trusted supplier of premium sensors, software and services. Delivering value every day to professionals in surveying, construction, infrastructure, mining, mapping and other geospatial content-dependent industries, Leica Geosystems is an industry leader with innovative solutions to empower our autonomous future.

FIRST BOBCAT PRESSURE WASHER ATTACHMENT WORKING IN SPAIN The first Bobcat 250M pressure washer attachment in Spain has started work at Altrasan Alquiler de Maquinaria, based in Tui in the province of Pontevedra. Designed for use on Bobcat compact loaders, the new pressure washer was supplied by Talleres Turquino / Grupo Epromext, the Authorised Dealer for Bobcat in the Galicia region of Spain. The Altrasan group began business more than 20 years ago and specialises in the rental of machinery in Pontevedra and the north of Portugal, as well as the sale of machinery in both national and international markets. Altrasan is one of the largest purchasers and sellers of machinery in Spain.

huge bowsers. There are many areas they cannot access, such as the historical centres of the Roman cities and towns that abound in Galicia, including our home town, Tui.” The plug and play design of the new Bobcat pressure washer attachment provides total peace of mind. This ensures it is quick and easy to connect it to the Bobcat loader, allowing the operator to begin work with the new attachment immediately. The new pressure washer is also very versatile, as the operator can either operate the sprayer from the cab or with a handgun for more targeted highpressure water cleaning or sanitisation of various objects. The washing handgun and its accompanying 20-metre hose reel

provide an easy switch from the front sprayer to handheld washing, providing an alternative solution for cleaning apartment entrances, corners, statues, machines, cars, benches, signs or in any tight spaces. Excellent results can also be achieved when cleaning façades and roofs, to clear waste and moss, for example. Marco Alonso added: “We currently own 30 different Bobcat compact machines – two S70 compact loaders, the smallest model in the Bobcat range, several S130s and half a dozen S450s, plus S530 and S630 loaders. The Bobcat mini-excavators in our fleet include two E10z, two E17z, a E35z and two E50 models, as well as two E85s we’ve owned for several years. We also have two new E26s on their way.”

Marco Alonso, owner and Manager of Altrasan, believes the pressure washer will be a great cleaning tool for urban areas, where there is little room for cleaning tanks to be used. The compact package of the loader and the pressure washer allows for greater manoeuvrability on the narrow roads and cobbled pavements in these areas, where cleaning needs to be more precise than on smooth surfaces such as asphalt. The hydraulic power offered by the Bobcat compact loader carrying the attachment guarantees deep cleaning with high pressure water without losing any power, resulting in increased efficiency and productivity. Marco Alonso said: “This will be a good attachment for use in places with older town centres and reduced access streets. In addition to the application on public roads, street furniture can also be cleaned, including park benches, street signs and for COVID-19 disinfection work, in addition to cleaning our own machinery. “We are thinking about the advantages that we can offer our rental clients, who usually use tractors to pull

LIEBHERR EXTENDS SWING OF INNOVATIVE ATTACHMENTS With the new “LiTiU” tilt unit, Liebherr presents an innovative attachment that extends the swing angle of various attachments. Fixed attachments can reach swing angles of up to 2x75 degrees thanks to the LiTiU unit. In addition, hydraulic attachments such as sorter grabs, swivelmounted ditch cleaning buckets and tilt buckets can be combined with the LiTiU unit for an even bigger swing angle. LiTiU is compatible with attachments from other manufacturers. The new unit is available in different versions and sizes. The new Liebherr LiTiU attachment is designed for applications where the swing angle represents an extension of the working area. It allows more applications of wheeled and crawler excavators. Apart from classic excavation works, the machines can be used for levelling and modelling banks, levelling and ditch cleaning, as well as demolition and recycling, without the need to reposition the machine or change the attachment.

Innovative technology that complements the tried-and-tested LiTiU is an attachment developed by Liebherr with protected swivel motor. It is available as a direct mounting or sandwich attachment in two different sizes. As a direct mounting, LiTiU 12 or LiTiU 18 is attached directly to the stick end of the wheeled or crawler excavator. The connection between the bottom of the LiTiU unit and the attachment is realised either with the Liebherr quick coupling system SWA 33 / SWA 48 or the fully

36

DIGGERSLIVE

automatic Liebherr quick coupling system SWA 33 LIKUFIX / SWA 48 LIKUFIX. Depending on the system, swing angles of up to 2x75 degrees are possible. With the optional extended hydraulic circuit, the LiTiU 18 unit can also be activated directly. As a result, the high-pressure and medium-pressure circuits are available for the functions of the attachments. There is no need to change over to the joystick control elements and productivity can be increased. Both the connection between stick end and LiTiU and the bottom of the LiTiU and attachment is realised for LiTiU 33 or LiTiU 48 in the sandwich attachment via the fully automatic Liebherr quick coupling system SWA 33 LIKUFIX / SWA 48 LIKUFIX. In this version, swing angles of up to 2x50 degrees are possible. One advantage of this attachment version is the externally routed hydraulic piping. This ensures a uniform and constant oil flow. The LiTiU 33 and LiTiU 48 units are therefore the perfect complement for attachments with their own slewing drive, such as sorter grabs or vibrating plates. But this attachment version is also beneficial for attachments such as hammers, milling machines and mulchers that do not have their own slewing drive but still require high oil quantities with low pressure losses. In the sandwich attachment version the connection between stick end and LiTiU, as well as the bottom of the LiTiU and attachment, is realised with the fully automatic Liebherr quick coupling system.

PRODUCTS

The new LiTiU 48 unit makes possible swing angles of up to 2x50 degrees.

Comfort and efficiency advantages thanks to LIKUFIX

There are additional comfort and efficiency advantages when the new LiTiU unit is combined with the fully automatic quick coupling system LIKUFIX. LIKUFIX is a hydraulic quick coupler with an automatic hydraulic coupling system. Both mechanical and hydraulic attachments on the bottom of the LiTiU can be safely exchanged from the operator’s cab in a matter of seconds. Apart from quick and safe attachment changeover, the LiTiU 33 or LiTiU 48 unit can also be set down fully and the machine combined with another attachment.

Additional applications

Fixed buckets are mainly used for classic earthmoving work, such as excavation or the transport of materials. A certain swing angle is beneficial for levelling and modelling banks or levelling and ditch cleaning work, as well as demolition or recycling. With the new LiTiU unit, each fixed attachment becomes a swivelmounted unit with increased versatility. Hydraulic attachments can also be combined with the LiTiU unit for an even greater swing angle, as can attachments from other manufacturers such as vibrating plates or mulchers. Productivity is increased where the swing angle provides better access to difficult to reach places without the need to reposition the machine. www.diggers.live

The weight has been increased and optimised in the E50z to maximise stability, which has allowed Bobcat to provide a long arm as standard equipment. The E55z is a premium performance model – it is the largest and most powerful Bobcat machine with the ZHS design. The new E60 is the R2-Series flagship model in all aspects – this conventional swing model features a more powerful engine, a larger cab and other new unique features. In the E60, a tail overhang of only 280 mm allows the machine to be operated in confined spaces. This ensures the machine is an ideal tool for highly demanding applications where performance has a priority. The R2-Series mini-excavators are now powered by the new Bobcat D18 (E50z/E55z) and D24 (E60) Stage V high torque diesel engines, designed specifically for Bobcat compact equipment and based on a well proven design installed in thousands of Bobcat machines worldwide. The new engines improve overall machine performance, while meeting the strictest Stage V emissions regulations. The use of DPF technology allows the new miniexcavators to be employed in emissionregulated zones such as city centres.

Built around the operator

Like the very successful Bobcat R-series 2-4 tonne machines launched in 2018, the new R2-Series mini-excavators are built around the operator and are designed to take this philosophy a big step further. This makes operators feel even more at home when working with these machines. All three excavators offer a best-in-class roomy cab with space where the operator really needs it, with more

headroom, legroom and plenty of storage areas. A comfortable seat with optional heating and headrest ensures operators will enjoy working a full day in all these new machines. The new five-inch display panel and optional seven-inch touchscreen display with integrated radio and rear view camera take comfort and visibility to the next level. The new R2-Series mini-excavators are equipped with state-of-the-art technology such as a latest generation main control valve, dual curve joysticks and proportional thumb-controlled boom swing offset. Traditional Bobcat performance coupled with fine control ensures that the new excavators feel like an extension of the operator’s hands. To ensure operators can work precisely and safely, the new excavators offer best-in-class panoramic visibility from the cab, with solid but narrow pillars ensuring the operator is fully aware of the working area around the machine. Features such as powerful demisting, LED lights, wipers with intermittent function and a heated rear window ensure that visibility remains uncompromised in all circumstances.

Increased versatility

Up to five arm-mounted hydraulic auxiliary lines and the optional A-SAC technology enable a wide choice of machine customisation options to match any attachment requirement, further enhancing the role of these excavators as excellent tool carriers. The A-SAC system is a unique solution that enables operators to customise control patterns of auxiliary hydraulic circuits on Bobcat mini-excavators, depending on their setup preferences for using hydraulic attachments. The A-SAC system is operated by using the push buttons conveniently located on top of each of the joysticks in the cab. Used in combination with the A-SAC switch on the control panel, the operator can select one of seven preset control pattern combinations that allow them to keep their hands on the joysticks when carrying out their work. This leads to higher productivity and saves time and money that would otherwise be lost through having to get used to new working modes or machine customisation.

Bobcat Automatic Track Tensioning System

heavy loads. An improved counterweight design and dual flange rollers guarantee superb over-the-side-stability and provide operators with even more confidence in any situation.

Tough, robust design

Heavy-duty steel side channels and a counterweight acting as a bumper help to protect essential inner components, and all other critical components such as lights and hoses have additional protection. The R2-Series machines can also be supplied with the patented optional Cylinder-Inside-Boom (CIB) system to offer maximum protection of the boom cylinder as well as the load hold valve.

Another new option is the Bobcat Automatic Track Tensioning System (ATTS), which uses the machine’s hydraulic system to ensure a proper track tension at any time. The track tension can be adjusted to match the site conditions in which it is working. This makes work more efficient and saves money and time. Correctly setting the track tension leads to longer track life. This system eliminates the need to manually retension the tracks, resulting in minimised machine downtime, extended lifetime of undercarriage components (tracks, rollers) and simple track replacement.

MAKING ALL THE DIFFERENCE WITH RECLAIMED ASPHALT The road construction industry faces many challenges. Not least among them are haulage and disposal costs, and the demand to protect the environment. Anyone with an ongoing road construction project – from a major road to a small side road – knows this. The same restrictions also affect those who process and distribute bituminous conglomerates. Once the old pavement is milled, it is necessary to haul and dispose of it. This process impacts the project costs, duration and cost to the environment. MB Crusher focused on this challenge and transformed it into an advantage. The secret? MB’s mobile crushers can be mounted on any size and brand of heavy machinery on the job site, transforming it into a powerful crusher. They then reduce asphalt to the required

40

DIGGERSLIVE

size, ready for immediate reuse, for example as a base material for a new road. The material processed with MB Crusher equipment creates new business opportunities in a single project, eliminating downtime, haulage and disposal expenses. Now, any company can become autonomous and more competitive with MB. In the words of an experienced foreman: “Asphalt, bitumen and old sidewalk or city square pavement has become a valuable resource. We can reuse the material there and then, or sell it. With MB’s mobile crushers, we increased our job’s margins and have new business opportunities.” The results achieved by a Chilean company that specialised in road construction services are awe-inspiring.

Using an MB-L200 Crusher bucket, they recycled material to use it as a sub-base, creating new material in no time and with zero costs. The landing strips at Reykjavík– Keflavík, the largest airport in Iceland, were rebuilt using the old asphalt as a base material, thanks to the use of a BF70.2 crusher bucket. Each MB Crusher bucket is designed to adapt to all requirements of a job site easily. You can pair it with any heavy equipment, it crushes any type of asphalt and hard material, it doesn’t require specialised mechanics and it works non-stop. Experience on many job sites proves that MB Crusher attachments are the most qualified and reliable tools for a recycling asphalt, paving the way to a new revenue stream and giving greater attention to the environment.

BOBCAT MACHINES REMOVE SURPRISE SNOW IN MADRID January’s Storm Filomena surprised the entire community of the Spanish capital city, Madrid. Its streets, parks, roads and airport woke up to a great accumulation of snow, as what was predicted to be just 20cm of snowfall turned into a much bigger storm. Sonia Royo, President of the community of the Polígono de Albresa de Valdemoro commercial area of the city covering 36 hectares and incorporating almost 600 affected companies, called in Bobcat Of, the Bobcat Authorised Dealer for the area, to help in carrying out snow removal tasks throughout the district.

Bobcat equipment reopens routes into Valdemoro Bobcat Of made available a fleet of Bobcat equipment for the snow removal, including two S510 skid-steer loaders and two TL30.70 telehandlers and four operators, who worked continuously over four days. The telehandlers operated on the wider avenues and in wider areas, while the compact loaders were engaged on the narrower streets or at the entrances to industrial buildings, clearing the way for vehicles and workers to access offices and warehouses. The Bobcat S510 compact loader is ideal for this type of work owing to its long wheelbase, providing greater traction force than other skid-steer models. This provides excellent stability for snow removal, while the radial lift design offers the perfect kinematics for pushing and loading snow, further aided by the greater reach at mid-height that it offers. This model can be equipped with heating and air conditioning, which allows operators to work in all conditions. The TL30.70 telehandler has a reach of seven metres and with its compact dimensions, guarantees good access, excellent manoeuvrability and great comfort for operators, who worked for

long hours without rest. Combining this with a lift capacity of three tonnes, the TL30.70 offers an excellent solution, that utilises its excellent short turning radius to manoeuvre and clean up in tight areas and hard to reach places. Upon seeing how effective Bobcat Of ’s equipment was, the Valdemoro City Council requested that the machines be used to clear the access roads in the Polígono area, including many of the entry roads and streets in the municipality. Ferran Recio, Manager of Bobcat Of, said: “The situation has been very complicated, with the access roads to the Polígono area and the warehouses totally blocked by snow. We received an avalanche of calls from private and public companies requesting Bobcat machines to remove snow and ice in different areas. With all our Bobcat compact equipment working on the streets of Madrid, there was nothing else left to offer from our Bobcat rental fleet for several days. We have met all requests within our means. Nobody foresaw such a thing happening.”

Madrid Airport also uses Bobcat

The historic snowfall forced the suspension of all operations at the Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez airport, stopping all aircraft from taking off or landing on the runways. Eight Bobcat S450 skid-steer loaders equipped with heated cabs, snow blades and sweepers worked day and night to clear the runways and airport facilities. One of the special features of the Bobcat machines is their

ability to clear right up to the edges of the planes, owing to their compactness and manoeuvrability in narrow spaces. Using its fleet of Bobcat machines, Bobcat Of has helped various parts of the Madrid community to return to normal. Even in the most extreme of conditions, such as in this ‘once in a century’ snowfall that hit Madrid, Bobcat compact equipment shows its versatility, work capacity and high level of performance.

DUSTBOSS ATOM COMPACT DUST SUPPRESSION DESIGN DELIVERS EXCEPTIONAL MOBILITY AND VERSATILITY

48

DIGGERSLIVE

www.diggers.live

PRODUCTS As effective dust control continues to gain priority across a wide range of industries, a new equipment design has been engineered to provide an unmatched level of mobility and performance, delivering effective particle suppression for new and existing applications. With a throw of 30 metres, the adjustable elevation angle and user-defined oscillation allow precise aiming of a powerful dust-capturing mist, which is comprised of millions of droplets per minute in the range of 50-200 microns – proven to be the most efficient size for most project needs. The DustBoss Atom from BossTek is a true innovation in mobile dust suppression, a fan-less, self contained design that incorporates remote control

www.diggers.live

and 4G LTE telematics technologies as standard equipment to deliver an unprecedented combination of suppression and monitoring. The compact, diesel-powered unit fits on the back of a pickup truck, so it can be quickly positioned and relocated to address dust-generating activity directly at the source. It also has fork lift pockets on the front and back. Mike Lewis, BossTek VP of Sales said: “After more than 15 years of designing purpose-built dust suppression equipment in a variety of sizes and styles, we found that some companies expressed a desired for a smaller, more manoeuvrable unit, with a lower price point. This machine is well suited to demolition projects, recycling operations, transfer stations, bulk material processing, ports/shipping applications, quarrying/ crushing, biomass handling, concrete curing and even indoor operations where significant air movement may be undesirable.” The Atom features a Kohler KD440 power plant – a 9.1 horsepower aircooled Tier-IV-compliant engine. A unique air filtration system increases performance and lengthens service intervals, even in dusty environments. Its integrated fuel injection system and overhead cam design are coupled with a cast iron cylinder liner for consistent, reliable service. The engine and pump subassembly are secured by four isolation mounts that minimise vibration transfer

to the frame. The high-impact stainless steel nozzle features a quick disconnect for easy replacement. Lewis continued: “In addition to its compact size, what really sets this unit apart from other designs is the built-in communications features. The hand-held remote controls virtually every function and the telematics provide a web-based platform to monitor status and streamline service and support. “The system tracks engine hours, operating temperature and average run time per day, and provides readouts of suggested maintenance. It can be programmed to monitor machine location via GPS and can even troubleshoot remotely or geo-fence each unit, so it’ll only function within proscribed locations. The telematics are so sophisticated that users can remotely disable machines, if needed.” The system is fitted with a Cat Pumps 56G1 water pump that requires just 40 PSI (0.344 BAR) minimum inlet pressure, connected by a one-inch cam and groove quick disconnect fitting. Considered the world’s most dependable high pressure reciprocating triplex plunger and piston pump design, the unit has specially formulated seals and high density, polished ceramic plungers that are optimised for long service life and durability. It also includes protection against pressure drops. If a low-pressure situation is detected, the unit shuts down to prevent damage to the pump or overheating of the engine.

also offer shorter charging times and are compatible with both AC and DC fast charging stations. It takes just 35 minutes, for example, to charge a 70 kWh battery from 20 per cent to 80 per cent in the case of opportunity charging at a fast DC charging station with a charging capacity of 70 kW. An integrated temperature management system thus ensures efficient operations in all countries of the world in an ambient temperature range of minus 20 to 45 degrees celsius. The Goldhofer developers have achieved a further increase in efficiency with the new direct drive. In the improved SHERPA E, the synchronous motor directly connected to the axle develops a maximum torque of 1,050 Nm. That gives the new e-tractor a speed of up to 30 km/h at only 3,000 rpm.

GOLDHOFER WRITES NEW CHAPTER IN SUSTAINABLE GROUND HANDLING With the optimised SHERPA E batterypowered cargo tow tractor, Goldhofer is writing a new chapter in the field of sustainable ground handling. The new generation of e-tractors offers not only a wider range of performance and a longer life cycle in service, but also faster and more flexible charging options plus longer servicing intervals and lower operating costs. Unlike the previous model, the improved SHERPA E comes equipped with a direct drive motor with a maximum torque of 1,050 Nm. Power is supplied via a modular battery system with intelligent temperature management. The tow tractor, which can be individually configured to customer requirements, can be charged using almost any standard charging infrastructure. Since 2017, Goldhofer’s SHERPA E, has been the ideal solution for lownoise, zero-emission operations on airport aprons worldwide. Integrated into an intelligent charging infrastructure, it

50

DIGGERSLIVE

surpasses conventional diesel tow tractors and e-tractors with lead-acid batteries in terms of performance, flexibility, sustainability and economics. In response to growing demand for emission-free ground handling, the Goldhofer development team has introduced a number of enhanced solutions with the new model. For example, the SHERPA E, with its proven IonMaster technology, now offers a battery capacity of 35 or 70 kWh – depending on the version chosen (Performance / High Performance) – for a draw bar pull of 25 to 45 kN.

Powerful, sustainable, economical – IonMaster technology

For trouble free working with the new SHERPA E, Goldhofer relies on its proven IonMaster system, a powerful electric drive based on high-voltage lithium-ion battery technology. The highly efficient 400V lithium-ion battery is designed for fast charging and efficient intermediate charging and offers over 30 per cent higher performance than lead-acid batteries. The technology – tried and tested in automotive engineering and commercial vehicles – meets the highest quality and safety standards. All it requires is a simple charging infrastructure with AC or DC charging stations. Energy savings compared to diesel-powered vehicles can be as high as 80 per cent, while noise emissions are close to zero. As an efficient, modular long-life drive concept, IonMaster technology is the key to highly cost-effective operation with e-vehicles. It ensures almost permanent availability of the fleet, and the fleet itself can be reduced to a minimum number of vehicles as permitted by the situation of the particular airport.

Fast charging, greater range

The resulting increase in operational flexibility is backed up by an intelligent temperature management system that uses a cooling compressor and heater to ensure that battery temperature is always in the optimum range 15 to 40 degrees. This system adds 25 per cent to the range of the vehicle. The new battery systems

JCB POTHOLE PRO – RAPID, PERMANENT ROAD REPAIRS

54

DIGGERSLIVE

www.diggers.live

PRODUCTS

JCB has developed a highly productive single-machine pothole repair solution to fix potholes permanently, first time, without the need for labour intensive repair methods or additional expensive machinery. The company has launched the PotholePro – a machine that can repair a pothole in less than eight minutes – four times quicker than standard methods and at half the cost of current solutions. The machine’s development has been personally led by JCB Chairman Lord Bamford. He said: “Potholes really are the scourge of our nation. Our country is quite rightly fixated on this dreadful problem and as a British manufacturer I am fixated on finding a solution. We simply cannot allow our road network to continue to be blighted by potholes. JCB’s solution is simple and cost effective and fixes potholes permanently, first time. Once the machine has done its job all the contractor then needs to do is add tar.” Tests with contractors and local authorities show the JCB PotholePro can complete a pothole repair in less than eight minutes – equivalent to 700 potholes per month. With a 40km/h travel speed, the machine can rapidly relocate between sites without additional transport costs. The JCB PotholePro is equipped with a modified Simex planer, with integrated dust suppression, mounted on the machine’s rear skid steer hitch. The planer is 600mm wide, with up to 1.3 metres of side-shift adjustment. This allows the operator to plane a full carriageway from the kerb, without repositioning the machine. Hydraulic tilt and depth control provide consistent depth for larger patches. The machine’s TAB two-piece boom is fitted with the JCB Multi-tool, mounted on an X12 Steelwrist tilt-rotator. The Multi-tool comprises two attachments, a dedicated hydraulic cropper and a sweeper/bucket. The 600mm cropping tool eliminates the need for floor saws or hydraulic breakers, providing a squared off, clean cut to the repair area. The operator then rotates the boom head to bring a 1.2 metre-wide sweeper/bucket into use, to clean up the pothole area, eliminating the requirement for a separate sweeper truck. Material lifted by the sweeper/bucket can be loaded directly into a support truck for rapid removal from site. The PotholePro can prepare up to 250 square metres of roadway in a single shift, or 5,000 square metres per month, and allows the contractor or local authority to cut the defect, crop the edges and clean the hole with one machine – mechanising jobs

traditionally done by pothole gangs and delivering up to a 50 per cent cut in daily costs. Safety is also improved as the gang does not have to complete the handheld cutting and breaking, eliminating the risk of hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The machine’s launch follows a vow from Chancellor Rishi Sunak last November to invest £1.6 billion to fix potholes in Britain and “level-up” uneven roads. Shock figures from the AA reveal more than £11 billion-worth of potholes need repairing across the UK. The machine has been in trials on roads in Stoke-on-Trent for months and the city council has worked with JCB over the last 12 months as innovation partners to develop the PotholePro. In initial testing, the machine completed 51 road repair jobs in 20 days, which would have taken a team of up to six operatives 63 days to complete normally. Councillor Daniel Jellyman, Stoke-onTrent City Council cabinet member for infrastructure, regeneration and heritage, said he had seen a 700 per cent increase in productivity. He said: “Potholes are a nuisance to motorists up and down the country and we’ve worked closely with JCB to come up with a solution to what is a national problem. In a time when every penny and pound counts for local authorities, we’re delighted to be at the forefront of developing and trialling new technologies

56

DIGGERSLIVE

and ways of working, especially ones which could save residents money.” AA President Edmund King OBE said: “The toll of pothole damage on cars is already breathtaking. However, as more people take up cycling due to avoiding public transport in the pandemic and if e-scooters are legalised, then sorting our poor road surfaces becomes more

important than ever. SHORETRENCH EXPANDS WITH NEW BOBCAT E45 MINI-EXCAVATOR ShoreTrench, developer of the UK’s first range of preassembled trench shoring systems and a subsidiary of Secure Ground Solutions Ltd, has purchased a new Bobcat E45 mini-excavator from Wigan-based Norwest Plant Ltd, the local Authorised Bobcat Dealer. This is the first in the UK to be equipped with the Bobcat Depth Check system. With over 35 years’ experience in the construction and groundworks industry, ShoreTrench founder and CEO, Glenn Molyneux, knows all too well the problems associated with trench excavations. Such experience led to the development of his company’s revolutionary ShoreTrench range of trench support and protection systems to enhance the safety and productivity of all aspects of trench shoring activity. Glenn Molyneux said: “Our ShoreTrench systems are the UK’s first preassembled trench shoring systems, providing an immediate support solution for an excavated trench and removing

60

DIGGERSLIVE

the risk of collapse. We are continuously developing the ShoreTrench range to meet increasing sizes and complexities of trenches. We have used Bobcat E10z and E26 mini-excavators in our early product development and the arrival of the new E45 model will help us to develop new and innovative products.”

First use of Bobcat Depth Check system in the UK As well as demonstrating the latest generation of ShoreTrench systems, the new E45 mini-excavator is the first Bobcat mini-excavator in the UK to feature the company’s Depth Check system. This provides an electronic depth gauge on the Bobcat E45 that allows the operator to dig to a depth without requiring an engineer with a laser setting the line, making site operations more efficient and reducing the need for additional personnel. Molyneux said: “Using technology such as the Depth Check system on

the new Bobcat E45 will allow us to continue development of our innovative ShoreTrench products. The Bobcat Depth Check System is exclusive to Bobcat excavators and allows the operator to achieve an accurate grade every time without leaving the cab. The operator simply has to set the width and depth of the trench support unit into the system and choose the right width bucket.” Garry Wheawall of Norwest Plant said: “I’ve known Glenn for over six years and he’s bought several Bobcat machines in the past. We had discussed at length how the Bobcat Depth Check works and the benefits it could offer their continued development of ShoreTrench products. I’m pleased to be able to provide an innovative solution to help progress the ShoreTrench range – it’s also great that it is the first in the UK.” The Bobcat Depth Check system utilises three sensors, one on the bucket, one on the arm and one on the base of the boom. All three sensors read the exact position of the attachment, boom and arm and constantly send and process data to the control panel that shows on the Bobcat Deluxe Display Screen in the cab of the E45. The processed information gives the operator visual and audible signals to guide them to either sustain or achieve a desired dig depth or grade. The Bobcat Depth Check System is efficient and easy to use. It is a Bobcat dealer-installed accessory for select Bobcat mini-excavators (namely the E34 through E85 models) with deluxe instrumentation. It is compatible with both the standard-arm and long-arm configurations of Bobcat mini-excavators. The many uses for the system include trenching utility lines; placing drainage ditches; digging basements; installing sewer lines and drain fields and preparing sites for footings or pads. Glenn Molyneux said: “Our ambition is to make all trench shoring activity safer, more productive and more efficient and using the Bobcat E45 will help us

to achieve that. Working with Norwest Plant and Bobcat is helping us to continue to develop innovative solutions for the construction and engineering industry.” The products in the ShoreTrench range, comprising the Foundation Unit Trench Support, Drive Over Trench Support and Personnel Access Trench Support, all include a patented interlocking mechanism, which is fast to position using a mini-excavator and requires no initial assembly and no manual lifting, as well as a variety of additional features.

MCCUSKER DEMOLITION PURCHASES FIRST BOBCATS McCusker Demolition Ltd, based in Belfast, has purchased the company’s first Bobcat machines from Northern Excavators, the local Authorised Bobcat Dealer. McCusker has added a new top-of-the-range Bobcat T40.180SLP 18-metre telehandler and a Bobcat E62 six-tonne mini-excavator. The Bobcat machines have joined an already impressive fleet of equipment at McCusker, which operates on behalf of a host of high profile clients specialising in a wide variety of demolition and dismantling projects throughout Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Conor McCusker, Contracts Manager at McCusker Demolition, said: “While

64

DIGGERSLIVE

the company had had no experience of the Bobcat brand, some of our operators have worked with the machines in the past and, in part, it was their recommendation that influenced our decision to invest in them.” Working on projects in urban and city centre areas and in sectors that range from domestic, industrial and commercial, to healthcare and education, only the best and most reliable equipment will do, and McCusker has been very impressed with the Bobcat machines in their first few months of service. “You couldn’t ask for better machines,” Conor McCusker added. “They have been performing brilliantly on site; they are very versatile, reliable and robust machines.”

Outstanding for work needing high-lift heights

According to Conor McCusker, the Bobcat T40.180SLP provides top-class performance for high-lift jobs. The easy-to-use compact stabilisers ensure that it is simple to exploit the machine’s full capabilities in the most confined working areas. In addition to safe working practice, the stabilisers are a big advantage when the machine needs to get close to a building without losing reach. Conor McCusker continued: “We purchased the T40.180SLP primarily for its 18-metre maximum lifting height; it’s ideal for working at height, and with a basket attachment we can easily transport men to those higher levels. It also has an excellent and comfortable cab that affords good all-round visibility, which is essential for our type of work.” The new T40.180SLP is currently working on a project to convert the vacant Brookfield Mill – a four-storey former linen factory built in 1850 on the Crumlin Road in Belfast – for residential use. Working on behalf of the client, Kerr Property Holdings Ltd, McCusker Demolition is carrying out demolition works for the scheme, which will provide 77 social housing units for the Clanmil Housing Group. Conor McCusker said: “As we speak, we have a team working on the top floor of the building, reducing the structures like they have already on the lower

floors. Instead of using a chute, they are loading the debris into the bucket on the T40.180SLP, which utilises the full 18-metre lift height of the machine, providing increased flexibility for taking materials away and stockpiling them at ground level.” As well as the lift height of 18 metres, the T40.180SLP telehandler has a maximum lift capacity of four tonnes. In addition to outstanding results in jobs that require high lifting heights, its compact stabilisers, frame levelling and boom positioning system provide greater productivity in all types of material handling and maintenance applications. The T40.180SLP is the top-ofthe-range model in the Bobcat range of 13 rigid-frame telehandler models, covering a total of up to 23 versions, with maximum lifting capacities between 2.6 and 4.3 tonnes, and lifting heights between six and 18 metres. All models in the Bobcat rigid frame telehandler range are covered by a standard three-year or 3,000-hour warranty. Like all new Bobcat machines, this is extendable under the company’s Protection Plus extended warranty plan, offering cover up to five years and/or 6,000 hours.

Conor McCusker added: “Alongside the T40.180SLP, we also purchased a Bobcat seven metre telehandler from Northern Excavators, which is performing very well on a project to refurbish an Ulster Bank branch in Belfast.”

metres and a maximum digging depth of 3.82 metres. The E62 has a travel speed of 2.7 km/h in the low range and 4.4 km/h in the high range. Bobcat has just launched the new R2-Series E60 model, which is the replacement for the E62.

The Bobcat E62 Mini-Excavator

Serving Bobcat Customers in Northern Ireland

Turning to the Bobcat E62 miniexcavator, Conor McCusker added: “What initially appealed to us about the six tonne E62 excavator was its compact size and its zero tail-swing which make it perfect for working on sites that are restricted or are difficult to access with a larger machine. “The E62 excelled on its first contract, working at St Mary’s Church, a vibrant, growing Church and Community Centre, right in the heart of the Ballybeen Estate in Dundonald on the edge of East Belfast. The E62 should already be working on its next project, but unfortunately the start date has been delayed.” Another of the stand-out features on the E62 is the hydraulic performance, with a maximum flow rate of 132 l/ min. This is complemented by the high digging forces on the E62, which offers a maximum reach at ground level of 6.1 metres, a maximum dump height of 4.05

MICK GEORGE GROUP BUYS UK’S FIRST DOOSAN DL-7 WHEEL LOADERS The Mick George Group, a leading supplier to the construction industry in the East Anglia and East Midlands regions of the UK, has taken delivery of the country’s first new Doosan DL-7 wheel loaders. As well as four new

PURCHASES

The new wheel loaders have been supplied by Leicester-based Pioneer Plant, the new Authorised Doosan Dealer for Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire and the PE and NG postcode areas of South Lincolnshire. Their reliability and quality are backed up by a 6,000 hour service package provided by Pioneer Plant.

Proving their worth

The story behind the order began when Pioneer Plant offered a demonstration of the Doosan DL580-5 wheel loader at the company’s busy limestone quarry at Wakerley in Northamptonshire. Michael Plant, Quarry Manager at Wakerley, said: “In the four days we had the demo machine it proved to be good on fuel, comfortable for the operators and kept up with the crushing plants and loading lorries. We knew from then, that if we were to purchase two DL580-5 models, the company would be able to save on costs in the quarry, replacing the three smaller wheel loaders the company previously used. “The excellent performance of the demo machine and the fact that all the Doosan wheel loaders could be supplied very quickly and put to work immediately, made it an easy decision to buy the Doosan machines.” All the new wheel loaders are being used for loading and stockpiling duties at quarries in the Mick George Group. As well as the DL580-5s at Wakerley, the DL420-7 wheel loaders have gone into operation at the Waterbeach and Mitchell Hill quarries in Cambridgeshire, the Ringstead Grange quarry in Northamptonshire and at the Crimplesham quarry in Norfolk. The new DL300-5 wheel loader is working alongside the DL420-7 at Crimplesham. Michael Plant added: “Since putting the machines to work, all feedback from the operators has been positive – they have speeded up loading times of HGV vehicles, they are burning less fuel and the traction the machines put into the ground has stopped wheel spinning which is going to save us money on tyres.”

Over 40 years’ market leadership Starting with a single tipper truck in 1978, the commercial fleet at the Mick George Group has now grown to more than 400 HGV vehicles. The Mick George Group specialises in bulk excavation and earthmoving, demolition and asbestos removal, a wide range of skip hire and waste management services and aggregate and concrete supply.

www.diggers.live

In addition to HGVs, the Mick George Group has an array of plant and machinery. The collection of mobile plant is used in applications from internally in the company’s own quarries and transfer stations to large earthworks projects. The lorry fleet means the company can meet the demand of providing a reliable muck away and aggregate delivery service to all its customers. The company operates from more than 39 sites, including the limestone/ sand and gravel quarries where the new Doosan wheel loaders are working, landfill sites, waste transfer stations and concrete batching plants.

Over 40 years’ plant experience

Pioneer Plant is solely responsible for sales and servicing of the Doosan crawler, wheeled and mini/midi excavator, wheel loader, articulated dump truck and attachment ranges in its area. As the latest addition to the UK dealer network for the Doosan Construction, Quarrying and Mining Equipment range, Pioneer Plant offers more than 40 years’ experience of plant dealership for both new and used equipment. Together, Brian Conn and Steve Corner, joint partners in Pioneer Plant, and their team provide a wealth of knowledge and expertise to advise customers on their purchases and how Doosan products can be used in their businesses. Pioneer Plant customers benefit from a superb on-site service network, covering everything from emergency repairs to routine maintenance. The company’s factory-trained engineers have many years of hands-on experience of repairs and servicing of all types of plant and machinery.

Doosan 2DL-7 wheel loader

Doosan’s new DL-7 wheel loader range introduces a complete line of next generation machines with an award-winning design, driven by powerful engines and providing higher productivity, increased fuel efficiency and a low cost of ownership, coupled with a fantastic environment and experience for the operator. The new DL320-7 and DL420-7 are part of the first phase of the DL-7 launch, covering seven new models, with redesigned buckets offering up to seven per cent more capacity to provide easier and faster loading with maximum bucket capacities from 2.8 to 6.4 cubic metres. This provides increased productivity for a very wide range of material-handling applications.

SCOTTISH CONTRACTOR PROSPERS WITH DOOSAN Following the purchase of a new Doosan DX140LC-5 14.4 tonne crawler excavator, Dundee-based DDP Contractors Limited has continued to prosper, winning a number of new contracts in the Scottish market. The new DX140LC-5 was supplied by Balgownie, the local Authorised Doosan dealer, with headquarters in Inverurie in Aberdeenshire. Formed in 2016 by experienced groundworkers, Dean Muir and Darren McIntosh, DDP Contractors mainly works on projects in the cities of Aberdeen and Inverness. The company offers a full range of civils and hard landscaping services via its Commercial, Residential and Small Works Division. This can include any size of project from retail parks, schools, leisure centres and housing developments, to private work, hard landscaping and individual driveways. Work carried out encompasses deep drainage, foundations, muckshifting, slabbing, kerbing, blocking, concreting, cobblestoning and much more.

The DX140LC-5 – A Real Valuefor-Money Purchase Darren McIntosh said: “Prior to purchasing the new Doosan excavator, we carried out thorough research, including looking at many of the other brands on the market. The people we spoke to were very impressed with the durability and performance of the DX140LC-5 and felt it was the perfect machine for the groundworks contracts

we undertake. They also pointed out that the DX140LC-5 offers excellent value for money, especially when backed up by the excellent expertise, back-up service and parts support provided by Balgownie.” The DX140LC-5 combines enhanced comfort and controllability together with a range of features to boost fuel efficiency, uptime and return on investment, with a focus on increased power, robustness and agility. Improvements in the performance of the DX140LC-5 compared to the previous generation include a five per cent increase in engine power and four per cent greater torque. In addition, traction has been boosted with an increase in drawbar pull of about 18 per cent and front lifting capacity has also been increased. The machine also boasts three per cent less fuel consumption. The Perkins 4.5 engine − the heart of the DX140LC-5 − provides the power and torque of larger engines with a smaller displacement. Plus, the engine guarantees trouble-free operation by meeting Stage IV emission regulations without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Darren McIntosh continued: “The assessments we received before we purchased the DX140LC-5 have been borne out by the experiences of our operator on the DX140LC-5. He says it is a good all-rounder that covers most aspects of civils, with plenty of power for this size of machine. It is also easy to maintain, with the fuel tank and Adblue

well placed, with no need to climb on the machine for refills. Inside the cab, he likes the comfortable set-up which includes well-situated controls.”

Supplied by dealer Scot JCB, it is being used on a range of forestry and roadworks projects for local councils. D & I Bain Director, Garry Bain, said: “We wanted something heavier and “beefier” than a 13-tonne machine but not as big as the 220X. The hydraulics in the 150X HD are very smooth. The cab is very well laid out and it’s very comfortable to operate. JCB machines fit the bill for us perfectly. They’re built in the UK, our local dealer is 10 minutes down the road and they perform excellently on our type of work.” The JCB 150X benefits from a wider operator cab affording all-day comfort, incredible in cab noise reductions of up to 68 per cent and modern styling with durable strike points to reduce total ownership cost. Increased diameter highflow pipework reduces system losses and boosts efficiency while there is a six per cent productivity improvement in terms of tonnes per litre. Tom O’Malley, Director, said: “With demand for groundworks high, continuing to expand our fleet with the latest and most innovative compact equipment is hugely important. “When we heard about Yanmar’s allnew Stage V-compliant C50R-5A tracked carrier, we knew it would be a valuable addition. The perfect partner for a six, eight or even thirteen-tonne excavator,

its capacity, speed, power and capability guarantees maximum productivity. With carefully designed tracks and an innovative hydraulic tensioning system, it’s perfect for moving heavy loads without damaging the ground – an important feature considering most of our work is delivered in environmentallysensitive areas. “With site safety paramount to our daily operations, having the option of turning the seat 180 degrees (to further improve visibility when reversing) is also hugely valuable. This, alongside a steel grid protecting the operator’s side, ground-accessible service areas and full ROPS/FOPS certification, makes the C50R-5A a great addition to almost every job.” The C50R-5A is the fifth Yanmar model that O’Malley has purchased in the past 12 months, having already bought the SV26, ViO17, C30 and C12 models in 2020. O’Malley continued: “We’ve used Yanmar machines for years and have always been hugely impressed with their performance, reliability and comfort. “The C50R-5A is no exception. It’s the perfect blend of Japanese style and build quality, supported with state-ofthe-art operator technologies and unique design features. “We have a 2006 C50R-3 tracked carrier, which is still working flawlessly 14 years later, so we’re confident that the allnew C50R-5A will be another excellent purchase. What’s more, thanks to the support of Taylor & Braithwaite, we can be safe in the knowledge that our latest models are backed up by a knowledgeable and committed team.” Ian Burton, Director of Sales at Taylor & Braithwaite, said: “We’ve worked in close partnership with Tom and the team for a number of years, providing classleading equipment to suit a wide range of applications. The C50R-5A is an excellent addition to Yanmar’s compact portfolio and we’re confident that it will deliver over and above expectations for O’Malley Plant Hire Ltd.” Established in 1968, O’Malley Plant Hire has delivered plant hire, groundworks, civil engineering and haulage services across Cumbria, Dumfriesshire, Co Durham and Lancashire for more than 50 years. Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire and the central belt of Scotland (Glasgow/ Edinburgh), the knowledgeable team were able to advise him on the best solution for his business. Mathew Watson, Director at MTS Plant, said: “Mark came to MTS Plant looking to try something new. He had experience with a wide range of manufacturers, but wanted an excavator that he could count on day in, day out. We talked him through Yanmar’s comprehensive range and highlighted what would best suit his needs. “After showing Mark around the ViO57, an extremely compact zero tail swing model that offers class-leading power, unmatched reliability, excellent hydraulics and a whole host of stateof-the-art technologies into its sub-5.5tonne build, he knew straight away that it was the perfect machine for his business.”

With great specifications for owneroperators, the ViO57 was further enhanced by Mark’s choice of options, including air conditioning, heater, air seat, counterweight, tilting hitch and custom decals. The ViO57’s zero tail swing design makes excavating on spacerestricted worksites simple, while the recently-updated boom offers 10 per cent greater lifting force while at the same time reducing its weight by 40kg for better manoeuvrability. The excavator comes equipped with powerful LED lights, which are perfect for the dark winter months.

Impressive build quality and easy operation

Since taking delivery of the excavator, Mark has been thoroughly impressed by the ViO57’s build quality. With exceptional performance and numerous safety features, the ViO57 has proven a significant upgrade. Not only has it improved Mark’s productivity, but also made a great impression with his clients. Reflecting on the new purchase, Mark said: “Compared to other machines I’ve used in the past, the ViO57 is in a different league. It’s easy to operate and can handle heavy loads. The accuracy and speed of the hydraulic system allows me to work far more efficiently and with much greater precision than I could previously. “It’s not just great in terms of performance, it’s also very comfortable and the controls are intuitive and ergonomic. These details are important when you spend all day in the cab. Overall, I couldn’t be more impressed. For anyone looking to invest in a new excavator, my advice is simple. As soon as you take a seat in a Yanmar, you’ll be sold.”
