WELCOME Hello to you all… As my blisters slowly recover from wandering around a certain quarry a week or so ago, my team and I bring you issue #12 of Diggers LIVE. Now, as we celebrate a full complement of 12 bimonthly magazines and are practically at our two-year anniversary, I must thank all exhibitors from Hillhead who either advertise with us, read us, contribute to us, like us or compliment us. You are the reason we began this venture in 2020 and you are the reason we have reached this level of construction equipment media reporting. Huge kudos to my team in Buxton, in particular my sister Nicki (you may recognise the surname), who has been with me since day one as my lead designer, as well as Brand Manager Ben Cumberland, affectionately known as ‘little Ben’. This was a first Hillhead for both of them and they were able to adapt to a manic, busy and important show with me. Well done both and thank you; what a successful event for exhibitors and for us. You can read about our experience on page 24. Keeping with Hillhead, we have a candid interview with LiuGong Direct UK Managing Director Steven Ford online, which you can watch on our YouTube channel: Demolition Hub TV. There’s plenty more footage and pictures that we will be showcasing in this issue and on the socials, so watch this space. It really was a fantastic event. Thank you QMJ. So what’s next? Well, we will be supporting our sister magazine and brand Demolition Hub in attendance at the British Demolition Awards in September (Leicester, UK), over to Munich for bauma in October, then across the pond to Las Vegas for both the World of Concrete in January and CONEXPO in March. Consider our appetite for live events whetted. So what have we got for you in this issue? Well, we have a safety machinery feature, we cover a few plant and hire companies, and interview James Bickerton the Business Development Director for TDL Equipment. We have an interview with Greg Patterson a Director from Astrak and an awful lot more. So, on to year three. How did we get here? I’ve no idea but we seem to be striking the right chord. Long may it continue and long may we continue to serve the industry.

Ben jumps for joy as he lands Commonwealth Games spot JCB-sponsored triple jumper Ben Williams is celebrating after being named in the Team England squad for this summer’s Commonwealth Games. He will be going for gold at the Birmingham games in the first weekend of August after securing his place with a jump of 16.82 metres earlier this month – the fourth best of his career. His latest international appearance comes after he represented Team GB at last year’s Tokyo Olympics. Today British Triple Jump Champion Ben, who has been sponsored by digger giant JCB since 2019, said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be representing England at our home Commonwealth Games. I am feeling

in great form and relishing the prospect of competing in front of a big crowd on home turf. I thrive on the atmosphere of large competitions, and this is one of the biggest in the world.” Ben, of Newcastle-under-Lyme, was inspired to start triple jumping aged eight while watching Jonathan Edwards on TV win gold at the Sydney Olympics. Edwards still holds the world triple jump record of 18.29 metres, 27 years after setting it. Ben missed the last Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018 due to knee surgery and after bouncing back to fitness, almost quit the sport in 2019 as he battled to balance the need to earn money with

the demands of training as an elite athlete. “If JCB had not stepped in to help with sponsorship I doubt would have been able to continue representing my country at the sport I love,” Ben said. “It is thanks to that support from JCB that I have been able to train full time as a triple jumper, which has helped my form massively. I go into the Commonwealth Games as a medal contender, which is a fantastic position to be in.” Ben’s lifetime best jump of 17.27 metres came in August 2019 – almost the length of a double decker bus. Guyana’s Troy Doris secured the gold medal at the last Commonwealth Games with a jump of 16.88 metres.

UK imports and exports of construction and earthmoving equipment – Q1 2022 In the first quarter of 2022, imports and exports of construction and earthmoving equipment both recorded very high levels of trade, but showed different patterns compared with the previous quarter. There was an exceptional 54% increase in imports over the previous quarter, bringing their value to £637.6m, marginally exceeding the £637.2m seen in Q2 last year, itself a high watermark since records began in 2013. This was consistent with equipment sales in the UK remaining at very high levels in the first quarter of the year. In contrast, exports in Q1 saw a 9% decline compared with the previous quarter, but this is in comparison to the highest quarterly level since monitoring began in 2013.

James Bickerton is the Business Development Director of TDL Equipment, a company supplying material handling equipment, attachments and wheel loaders to the UK market. Based in Staffordshire, James is passionate about family life, customer satisfaction and always driving TDL Equipment to improve

How do you fit in to TDL Equipment? As Business Development Director, my role primarily includes the day-to-day management of the sales team in the south of the UK, coupled with the company’s marketing functions, supporting the aftermarket departments and investigating new business developments including new product distribution opportunities.

How did you first come to be in your role in TDL Equipment? Originally joining TDL, my role was to head up the construction division across the UK. Following a business restructure and refocus, my role evolved from Construction Sales Director into the now Business Development Director’s role.

What is it about your role that attracts you? TDL Equipment is part of a dynamic and ambitious group of companies in the UK owned by Ballyvesey Holdings, which spans transport, distribution and construction sectors. The role afforded the opportunity for autonomy for decision making in strategy to achieve growth fully supported by the management and ownership structure. The incumbent team at TDL across the sales, service, parts and finance functions are committed, vibrant and a pleasure to work with, which fosters a culture of continuously looking to improve or a better way to do things. Every day genuinely provides new challenges or opportunities and the working relationships between staff and

The ethos of the company since I joined has always been customer first, which fits with my personal philosophy. Tell us about TDL Equipment’s history and development TDL Equipment has been supplying the UK market with plant and material handling equipment for over 20 years, inclusive of a number of brands and ranges of equipment. In 2020, TDL Equipment took the decision to refine and focus predominantly on the scrap and waste sectors in the UK, supplying the market with a high pedigree of equipment manufactured by ATLAS GMBH. This rationalisation of focus allowed TDL to become a market leader in sales and aftermarket care to the scrap and waste sectors, which has allowed us to expand our portfolio with other highly reputable brands such as Promove Attachments and the Weycor range of wheel loading shovels that we [were] excited to launch at Hillhead 2022 this year. Being a national dealer affords TDL the ability for TDL to supply the market with quality equipment without territory restrictions. For companies ranging from owner operators right through to national and multi-depot customers, this means the ability to

purchase equipment and benefit from nationwide service backup. Our sales team are highly experienced in the equipment and applications to best serve our customers’ requirements. Our national service team are field based, supported by our technical experts to offer the highest possible levels of customer service.

Tell us about TDL’s services and how these relate to customers The TDL equipment range includes a full range of material handlers from 16-52 t, a comprehensive range of hydraulic breakers and demolition attachments and a new range of wheel loading shovels ranging from 2.5-16 t.

The core focus of the company remains the scrap and waste sectors, with the development into demolition this year and the addition of the Promove Attachments range. Being a smaller company in this industry allows us to be agile, particularly in our aftermarket department. With our lean management structure, decisions can be made almost instantaneously without the requirement for multi-level discussion in pursuit of the customers’ interests. A good example of this is the decision to hold over 1,500 lines of parts stock, allowing us to achieve 96% first pick rates from our depot in Tankersley, South Yorkshire and meaning we can get a customer’s machine up and running as quickly as possible.

Tell us about your company philosophy and values The core values we employ at TDL Equipment are Trust, Deliver and Learn. We know that any relationship, whether it be with a new or existing customer, a supplier or indeed within the company has to be based on trust. At TDL a big part of this value is honesty and integrity with our customers and suppliers to help foster strong relationships. This feeds the second pillar of our core values which is to deliver. This is not restricted to delivering equipment to site, but moreover a philosophy that if any member of the TDL Equipment team makes a commitment to a customer, colleague or supplier, we deliver. We always strive to go above and beyond to deliver as we know without this, it is impossible to build and maintain the trust. Our final core value relates to learning. We are extremely proud of what we do, but we know there is always an opportunity to improve and we know what we can always do better. We constantly look for improvements and innovations to improve our business in pursuit of a better customer experience. Fundamentally, we appreciate that our customer’s success is our success, so anything we can learn and do better to serve our customer base will inevitably help TDL Equipment improve and grow.

How do you see TDL Equipment in five or ten years? Over the last few years, particularly following the business refocus on the scrap and waste sectors, TDL Equipment

QUICK FIRE has gone from strength to strength. The company sits as one of the leading suppliers in this sector and the company has grown significantly both financially and in size during this time. Within the next five to ten years, I would expect TDL Equipment to be recognised as one of the elite suppliers within our industry with a wider portfolio of equipment. While company growth and market share is of course a principal objective, I would like to think that the standards that TDL sets for itself shape the industry as a whole for the benefit of all customers in our sector.

Who would you be in an alternative life? Ideally, Jeff Stelling, presenting on Soccer Saturday every week. Who do you most admire? Jeff Bezos. To create an online book store into a global supply phenomenon is incredible, and a fundamental part of it was making it easy for the customer. What gets you out of bed in the morning? Driving the business forward and the opportunity to play with my children. What do you do for fun? Watch my beloved Stoke City (although it has rarely been fun in recent years). When and where are you happiest? On holiday with my wife and children. What’s your bucket list activity? I would love to own a holiday home in the UK, potentially in North Wales. What’s your ideal weekend? Anything with family and friends, as long as I get some time to relax on the Sunday. What’s your favourite cuisine? Mexican or Indian What’s your tipple of choice? Red wine. Rioja is a particular favourite.

SiteZone Safety – using data to create safe sites and safe behaviours We’ve been working with customers to make their sites safer with proximity warning systems for over 10 years. And as one of the first in our field to launch telematics to support the product more than six years ago, we’re excited to see how this is now being maximised to make lasting improvements on site. “Data is a tool for enhancing intuition.” This quote came from data scientist Hilary Mason and we think it perfectly sums up the way our customers use telematics data. The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) collision avoidance technology into the construction industry by Safety Shield Global has not only improved the behaviour of site operatives, it has significantly reduced dangerous interactions between people and plant. How long have you been in the industry and how did you start out? I joined the business in 2011 straight out of school when I was 17, and started in our warehouse. From there, I set up our first workshop facility and have pretty much moved through every department in the business to where I am now.

What attracted you to the industry? I have always had an interest in machinery. I bought my first mini digger when I was 15 from three years of savings from cutting grass in our street. When I finished school, it was a no brainer for me to join my dad and I’ve loved every minute of it ever since.

Have you been involved with any particularly interesting projects in your career? I think the most interesting project was the development of our DuraLine Plus rubber pads. To take it from an idea to supplying to some of the world’s largest OEMs for serial production feels like a pretty decent achievement.

Tell us about the different aspects of your work. What range of tasks do you undertake? I am responsible for leading our UK and OEM sales teams. I spend time working on business strategy, meeting with key customers and suppliers and dealing with anything else that gets thrown my way. Given that I was the fifth full time employee when I started and have kind of grown up with the business, I get involved in a lot of things that are not in my job role.

Tell us a little about Astrak’s standout products I would say Astrak’s standout products are our DuraLine Plus range of rubber pads, our TerraTrack Plus anti-detracking rubber tracks and our DuraTrack SALT undercarriage for bulldozers. Our DuraLine Plus pads have been independently proven by major OEMs to be the most durable rubber pad available on the market. We are now supplying many of the major global OEMs for serial production. TerraTrack Plus is an industry game changer; it combines several antidetracking and anti-vibration features to give users the best rubber tracks available on the market. Our DuraTrack SALT undercarriage comes with a market leading warranty and is tried and tested in some of the harshest environments. Our conversion kits allow our customers to convert their machines from very expensive OE patented systems to a much more cost-effective solution for their bulldozers.

How will Astrak be developing this product range in the near future? Our focus for growth is by increasing our market share with our existing product portfolio. There is no one in the industry with a product range as broad us ours from rubber tracks to steel tracks, final drives to track adjusters, road planer pads to bucket teeth etc. There will be some additional products added to the range later this year, but we are a little too early to disclose these plans now.

How do you see the plant industry post-COVID? Do you foresee different demands on contractors in the medium term? To be honest I would like to think we are well into the post-COVID era. Despite a blip at the start of 2020, our business never really slowed down so we must thank all our customers very much for that. I think the demands of contractors are broadly the same; great quality

What technological developments do you envisage will be the future game changers in the industry? I think the development of different forms of combustion engine e.g. hydrogen, is exciting and necessary as we become ever more aware of the impact of our decisions on the environment.

Do you have any notable projects in development or planning? As was announced earlier this year we have had a significant investment from the private equity firm, Inflexion. This has been a brilliant move forward for us and we are on a very exciting journey to grow in and consolidate our markets in the future. Attracting guys like Inflexion into our business has really given us a confidence boost to kick on and continue our growth trajectory.

What kind of projects would you most like to be involved with? Not thought much about that one. There isn’t a life after Astrak for the moment. We have so many exciting plans and goals and I want to be a part of that as long as I can.

What gets you out of bed in the morning? I would say the fear of failure gets me out of bed each day. I love the concept of productive paranoia, which is the ability to be hyper-vigilant about potentially bad events that can hit your company and then turn that fear into preparation and clearheaded action.

Plantworx returns for 2023

After a hiatus, due to the COVID pandemic and making way for the Hillhead show, the Construction Equipment Association (CEA) is delighted to confirm the venue and dates for the next Plantworx trade show. The 5th biennial construction machinery exhibition will be held on 13-15 June 2023, at the East of England Arena and Events Centre, Peterborough. The CEA has taken the decision to host the Plantworx show, once again at the East of England venue, following positive

feedback from exhibitors and visitors who attended the 2019 event, which was deemed a resounding success. The permanent exhibition facilities offered by the East of England Arena provided the perfect platform for exhibitors to showcase their products, equipment and services – introducing the latest plant and technology to the UK construction industry. Visitors also applauded the Plantworx show’s new home, praising the “all weather” venue as a “definite winner”, with its permanent walkways, good communication signals and wifi facilities – which allowed visitors to “do business – while doing business”. The 2023 event is predicted to attract over 450 exhibitors from the world’s leading machine manufacturers, suppliers and service providers. Over the three-day event, visitors can expect to see the very latest in technological advancements and innovations that will impact the future of construction. The show, which will be the largest working event in 2023, is planning a comprehensive demonstration programme where exhibitors can put their machines through their paces in “real-site” conditions. The event team also has some new initiatives in the planning – so watch this space for more information. CEA, Chief Executive Suneeta Johal said: “Plantworx 2023 will be my first show as CEO and I am very much looking forward to it. I believe with the amount of new and emerging technology this event is set to be the best yet. There’s a real appetite for attending in-person exhibitions again. Our recent Futureworx technology exhibition proved to be a

great success – and there was a real buzz amongst both the exhibitors and visitors. “The East of England arena is an established exhibition venue and with the great support from our loyal exhibitors, and a targeted visitor programme, we are confident of delivering a memorable and valuable experience.” Simon Frere-Cook, Plantworx Event Director said: “Planning for Plantworx 2023 is now well underway as we build on the successes of 2019. With so much importance being attached to the working demonstrations, we have undertaken an extensive survey of the grounds at the East of England Arena so that we can spread the demonstration plots and thus improve the footfall throughout the site. There will also be a focus on technological advancements, helping the industry to be safer, smarter and greener.” The 2023 site plan is being finalised following the results of the survey, with stand sales beginning in June 2022. She said: “Confirmation that the show will return to the East of England Arena will be welcome news to previous exhibitors following the encouraging feedback from 2019. Hillhead review by Ben Chambers

This was my third 230-mile expedition north to Buxton for the iconic quarrying, construction and recycling event at Hillhead Quarry nearby. Hillhead boasts of being the largest exhibition of its kind in the UK, with the show’s post pandemic return marking its 40year anniversary. With experience telling me to get there at the crack of dawn (no queues for the car park), early good fortune (burger van card reader down so a free bacon cob), and wonderful stage management by QMJ Group, I can say it was easily the best yet.

We enjoyed live demonstrations, spoke with many of the 600 exhibitors and walked past, took pictures of and spoke about thousands of products on display. An extension to the showground meant more exhibitors than ever before were able to show off their wares, and a host of new companies were involved. Surprisingly, JCB did not participate this year, but ‘its’ stand was taken over by new-ish kids on the block, LiuGong. We were treated royally by all the staff on both the Chinese, European and UK arms. All visitors to Hillhead must be 16 or older, as opposed to say ScotPlant, which allows families to attend. I am a huge advocate for families getting involved in what mum or dad does in their day-today job, but the role of Hillhead really is professional sales, and from what many vendors told me, these were frequent and off the charts. For those yet to attend, you enter through the indoor area of the event, with perhaps 250 exhibitors that don’t necessarily have heavy equipment to show off, but nonetheless offer vital services to the construction industry.

For the third event in a row, I quickly made my way outside, which for me is where Hillhead really begins. I can’t help myself. A sea of recognisable flags and logos greet you, and even as one of the first to enter, I soon found myself bumping into old friends and acquaintances on my way round. I did venture indoors a few times, mainly to get out of the beating 28-degree sun, but Thwaites and Omnia Machinery were very generous in refreshments (Thwaites BBQ and Omnia Beer), so we had alternate ‘shady areas’. Exhibitors welcoming us onto their stands – even as press – was key. We have some cracking photography and video from the three separate demonstration areas, recycling, rock processing and quarry face, which we look forward to showcasing on our video channels. All in all, Hillhead 2022 was a tremendously well organised event and the upbeat mood of most stands clearly shows it still holds its place as the UK and quite possibly world leader in construction equipment shows.

LiuGong makes Hillhead debut with awesome new lineup Continuing its successful, sector-specific focus, which netted LiuGong Direct UK the prestigious Demolition Supplier Of The Year at the British Demolition Awards in September 2021, LiuGong is confident that its new lineup of machines will meet the tough demands of the quarrying sector. Visitors also saw social media influencer Paddy Quinn put the 922F with Engcon tiltrotator through its paces, demonstrating LiuGong’s superior grade control. The highlight of the show was the launch of LiuGong’s 30-42 t F-Series machines, (930F, 933F, 936F, 939F, 942F) with the 936F, representing these at Hillhead. As you would expect, they set a new level for toughness, comfort, and reliability. Designed around the operator, they share LiuGong’s Red Dot Award-winning design DNA. Harry Mellor, Product Manager for Excavators explained, “The 939E has been a big success in the UK, but customers challenged us to go further. With our new F-Series machines we have risen to that challenge. Our new 936F easily outperforms the 939E, while the 939F steps up to become a credible leader in demolition. But we have gone further to meet customer demands with the all new 942F, which features a wider and tougher undercarriage, increased diameter boom cylinders and a heavier counterweight for impressive lifting capability and mass excavation ability. The F-Series proves that we really listen to our customers and work proactively with our design, R&D and engineering teams to deliver the machines our customers want to own and operate.” Static displays also included the 928F and 952E, both designed for heavy duty work and presented with full factory supplied demolition specification. eye catching and “Instagrammable”, 913FCR was presented in a unique livery to celebrate the F-Series’ UK tradeshow debut. When it comes to heavy duty applications and material handling, LiuGong wheel loaders have earned their global reputation for toughness and reliability. Weighing in at 31 t, visitors were able to take a closer look at the 890H, LiuGong’s largest wheel loader on offer to European customers.

Doosan displays and demos new products at Hillhead Doosan took the opportunity to demonstrate and display the very latest products from the company for the quarrying, mining and construction industries for the first time at Hillhead 2022. On display on the Doosan stand was the new version of the Doosan DX530LC-7 53-tonne crawler excavator. Next to the stand in the Quarry Face Demo Area, a DX420LC-7 43.5-tonne crawler excavator continued to load a Doosan DA30-7 articulated dump truck (ADT) throughout the show. A series of humps created in this area by Doosan served to replicate the off-road advantages offered by the unique free-swinging rear tandem bogie in the company’s ADTs, that

guarantees permanent six-wheel contact and drive, particularly for the most difficult terrains and working conditions. Comfort and controllability A number of new standard and optional features are now available on several of the large Doosan crawler excavators, including the DX300LC-7, DX350LC-7, DX380LC-7 and DX490LC-7 models, as well as the DX420LC-7 and DX530LC-7 excavators presented at Hillhead. The main changes are in the new cab, which takes operator comfort and ease of operation to the next level. Also on display on the Hillhead stand was the DA45-7, the largest model in the Doosan ADT range and the DL420-7, part of the awardwinning DL-7 range of wheel loaders from Doosan. Another of the new products being

shown by Doosan for the first time was the 24.3-tonne DX235LCR-7 reduced radius crawler excavator. The DX235LCR-7 is part of Doosan’s new medium-sized DX-7 range of 17 Stage V crawler and wheeled excavator models from 14 to 25 tonnes. Doosan also introduced a number of new compact products at Hillhead, including the new DX100W-7 10.7-tonne wheeled excavator, the new DX27Z-7 and DX50Z-7 next generation mini-excavators and the first appearance of the DL80TL-7 model from Doosan’s new range of compact wheel loaders. New DX-7 medium-sized excavators Like all the new DX-7 mediumsized excavators, the DX235LCR-7 combines enhanced comfort, increased tool carrier capability and novel operator assist technology, with new features to boost fuel efficiency, uptime and return on investment, with a focus on increased power, robustness and agility. Maintenance of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has also been greatly reduced, with no maintenance required until the machine has operated for 8,000 hours. at Hillhead. The 10-tonne weight class represented by the DX100W-7 is new to the Doosan range and the DX100W-7 offers a high performance solution for customers looking for a wheeled excavator designed primarily for urban and road maintenance applications. For this type of work, the DX100W-7 offers the best compromise between compactness and agility, complemented by excellent productivity and high-end comfort. It is very important that this type of machine can operate in very restricted areas, so the DX100W-7 can be equipped with the option of four-wheel steering and a crabbing mode, with two-wheel steering as standard. Next generation Doosan miniexcavators The new DX27Z-7 2.8-tonne and DX50Z-7 5.4-tonne models on the Hillhead stand provided the first look at Doosan’s next generation Stage V compliant mini-excavator range, which also includes the DX35Z-7 3.9-tonne and DX55R-7 5.7-tonne models. The zero tail swing design of the DX27Z-7 and DX50Z-7 make them ideal for confined space work. The DX27Z-7 is powered by the Doosan D17 Stage V compliant diesel engine delivering 18.4 kW at 2,400 RPM. The DX50Z-7 is powered by the Doosan D18 Stage V compliant diesel engine providing 36.4 kW at 2,200 RPM. As a result, both models offer the highest power and torque in their respective classes and cover a wide range of applications including heavy duty work. New compact wheel loaders As represented by the DL80TL-7 model on the Hillhead stand, Doosan is now offering a choice of five new compact wheel loader models, including the DL60-7, DL65-7, DL80-7 and DL85-7, with operating weights from 3,500 to 5,000 kg. Just like the much heavier versions in the Doosan range, these new compact wheel loaders set the industry standard for productivity, flexibility, comfort, safety and reliability, with powerful Stage V engines, hydrostatic 4-wheel drive, 100% differential lock on both axles and versatile and powerful hydraulics.

SANY celebrates a successful debut at Hillhead 2022 Hot on the heels of it’s successful debut at ScotPlant, SANY UK continues its booming show season as the team return from their first Hillhead event As it celebrated its 40th anniversary, the world largest quarrying, construction and recycling show promised to be the best yet. With more than 600 exhibitors and close to 18,500 visitors across a balmy three days, it didn’t disappoint. SANY took the opportunity to unveil the new SY155W wheeled excavator to the UK market, getting a great reaction. This 16 t wheeled excavator has been in Europe for two years but has been upgraded with rear stabilisers and a front dozer blade to suit the UK market. It also features state of the art hydraulics with hammer, low flow and rotate lines, with proportional controls as standard. Joining the SY155W on the SANY stand was the recently launched SY390H, a 40-tonne tracked excavator boasting impressive performance, efficiency, comfort and economy with fuel savings of up to 42% over the outgoing SY365C model. Other machines included the SY215C, the ever popular SY80U and the SY26U and SY18C from SANY’s range of mini excavators. Alongside the SANY team were representatives from SANY’s nationwide dealer network who took the

Rokbak highlights robust and reliable haulers at Hillhead Highlighting its robust and reliable machines and their low total cost of ownership and operation, UK articulated hauler manufacturer Rokbak presented its RA30 and RA40 alongside its UK dealer Molson Group at Hillhead Rokbak’s commitment to rock-solid reliability, power and performance was in sharp focus at Hillhead. Three Rokbak articulated haulers were at this year’s show, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to get up close to the machines, speak to product experts and see them in action. The RA40 was on Rokbak’s stand at N14 and an RA30 on show at Molson Group’s stand J3. An RA40 was working at the quarry face demonstration area, where visitors saw it doing real-world work in a live quarry environment. Speaking in advance of the show,

David Pollock visits Ashcourt Group of Hull for Diggers LIVE to see its latest purchase, a CASE 921G, in action, to speak to Plant Director Paul Martin, and hear from those with their hands on the levers of power Ashcourt Group of Hull, has taken delivery of the latest CASE 921G from Warwick Ward (machinery) to work moving materials in its Pocklington cement batching plant works. The machine itself is only a small part of the group’s greater expansion plans at Pocklington. Plans are in development for the Pocklington site to become Ashcourt’s new company head office as well as housing much of its multi-divisional sectors on the huge site. Since its launch in 2017, the CASE G-Series wheel loader has proven a popular choice among operators throughout the world. I spoke to one of the operators at the cement plant, Peter Martin, who told me that 921 G would be used for moving various types of sand and stone into the cement batching plant. Its 38-tonne shovel capacity is suited perfectly to deliver when

it matters making sure the cement is always available when required. Peter was used to operating various other brands, but had nothing but good things to say about his new machine, saying: “Comparing the 921 to my old machine is night and day. CASE has thought about the cab layout very well when it comes to having everything that is needed within reach and in view, right down to cables being run neatly out of the way.” Talking in detail about what he enjoys about the 921 shovel, Peter said that the ultimate selling point for him was the fridge in the cab. Not many machines had this, he said, and for him it was the ultimate in luxury for working on warmer days. Peter went on to describe what it’s like to operate the 921 on a day-to-day basis:

CASE’s shovel loaders offer a new integrated payload scale, a powerful tool, based on fantastic CASE design, accessible in the touchscreen monitor. The integrated payload scale allows you to read and log every single bucketload. You can also optimise every job report by identifying it with a complete set of data (the job ticket) such as customer name, your company name and address, the truck ID, the truck target load and all data necessary to provide full information for every ticket you will close during the day. The system is able to indicate if the last bucket is exceeding the target load previously set and, in this case, the tip-off mode can be activated, helping the operator to partially discharge the contents in the bucket until the target load is achieved, expediting the loading operation with no wasting time in readjusting the truck load before leaving the loading facility.

So, the job I moved on to with the new machine, Steelwrist and Trimble Earthworks was foundations. Foundations are probably one of my favourite jobs. I like setting myself targets for the day, for instance, I will set myself a target of maybe four or five plots a day depending on shape and depth. Now I had a bucket that rotated and tilted, so obviously my mind was blown. I had to get it right as there is not really any room for mistakes on foundations. I picked it up quite quickly, if I’m honest, as I’ve used a wide range of attachments on the rail. But getting the bucket right with the Trimble screen was harder than I expected. If it was slightly out of rotation or on a slight tilt then it threw you off when you lined up. But I started digging the foundation as I would in a normal machine, levelled myself up etc. and just made sure the rotation and tilt were perfect. And away I went. Halfway around the footing, I could quickly see how much easier this machine was going to make the job. When I’m pulling a trench in a footing and muck from it falls into the adjoining trench, rather than having to move the machine around to pull it back in, I can just reach out, spin the bucket

and, using the Trimble screen to make sure my bucket’s in the right position, easily pull the muck back. It felt like all my Christmases had come at once with this machine. I absolutely loved it and couldn’t wait to do more and more work with it. In January I also got to pick up my new van. It was a Fiesta Sport Van, and Joyce had gone to town with it, wrapping it with orange and pictures of the Joyce machines on each side. I was absolutely buzzing when I first saw it in the yard. The van is a one-litre petrol mild hybrid so it’s very economical commuting to and from work. It definitely stands out on the road. So, with the machine and the van it’s a real dream team and I couldn’t have asked for more. I’m so grateful. Now that I had all the tools, Joyce looked to use them across the sites and one of the more challenging jobs I was given was deculverting a brook in Redhill. It was bordered by a railway line on top of a steep bank on one side and Network Rail had strict requirements that we stay away from the fence. Of course, the Trimble kit was perfect for ensuring I stayed within this boundary and the tiltrotator meant I could work within this tight space. I couldn’t dig it from the

side as I would normally. So I positioned myself to dig it straight on. Our engineers had to adapt the design that the client had given us to work to where the fence actually was, while still achieving the correct gradient on the banks and turn it around quick so I could get started. There was a gabion wall at one end and I was able to cut the earth to shape exactly as we needed, including forming the base to a slope. The Environment Agency was all over this so everything had

to be just right. They were coming out to site all the time to make sure everything was ok. I couldn’t have done this brook so fast without all the new tech. Previously when I’ve dug swales and ditches with standard machine I’d do it all from the side. This brook was in such a tight space that I couldn’t dig it as I would do normally. I positioned myself to dig it straight. But this was no a problem with the GPS and tiltrotator.

Large-scale machine highlight at bauma 2022: SENNEBOGEN presents 300 t material handler At bauma 2022, SENNEBOGEN will bring the largest material handler ever exhibited at a bauma to its booth: the 885 G-Series. The handling giant for the port impresses with an operating weight of more than 300 t and a reach of up to 38 m. This much can already be revealed. With the new port material handler, which will be presented to the public at bauma, SENNEBOGEN is adding another largescale material handler to its portfolio, which, with its more than 300 t operating weight, can be used primarily in the demanding port segment. The company’s latest collaboration is with Xwatch Safety Systems and Trackunit. Together, they have designed and developed an industry first with the Xwatch Simple Safe Two Series Roll Over Monitor, which is connected to Trackunit’s telematic system. Since the SS2’s first trial, Explore has added the SS2 system to its front tipping dumper specification, demonstrating its commitment to safety and providing customers with the latest innovation in dumper safety. The system was first proposed when Chris Gatheridge of Explore Plant and Transport Solutions spoke to Dan Leaney of Xwatch Safety Solutions, asking whether an XW system could be adapted to warn the operator a dumper operator if the machine was at ‘tipping point’. The Xwatch engineers came up with a solution and this was fitted on one of Explore’s hire fleet six-tonne cabbed dumpers. Dan explained: “The Xwatch system monitors the driving style of the operator and gives an early alert to the operator via the Trackunit telematics of a potential pitch and rollover situation. The system tells the operator when he/she is reaching the manufacturer’s published limits. In the event of a rollover, the Xwatch system will stop the engine, preventing further operation of the machine, which eliminates engine damage and other potential hazards on site. The Trackunit telematics system is able to send real-time reports of this event.” Ryan Pike, Market Development at Trackunit said: “It is fantastic to be included in a new innovative system in plant that can prevent incidents before they happen. I have been lucky enough to witness the positive effects this collaboration has already had and know it will be a massive safety success. “The team agreed that adding the Trackunit telemetry to analyse these events and use the evidence to adapt the technology is where further progressions can be made. “In certain cases, we have already been able to prove that it is not an operator at fault for causing an alarm to trigger, but how a ramp on site was engineered (beyond the limitations of the machine). The SS2 uses a compact controller coupled with a three-axis platform angle sensor – it’s designed to be robust, reliable and cost-effective. It supports optional telematics for data logging and an optional secondary sensor for articulated equipment. In its standard guise, the maximum roll angle can be set from 1 to 32 degrees (0 to 63%). An audible alarm sounds when the maximum tilt has been exceeded. Intelligent filtering is used to separate actual machine tilt from bouncing and vibration. In the unfortunate event of a rollover, SS2 will send a signal that can be used to cut the engine, and/or activate a siren or beacon. The control module samples angle data 250 times a second, providing precise monitoring. Installation of the system can be achieved by any competent plant fitter.

No calibration is required and there are no moving parts. Apart from the occasional visual inspection, the system is maintenance-free. If data logging is required, SS2 supports optional telematics.

The new DX225LC-7X – Doosan’s first ‘smart’ excavator Doosan has launched the new DX225LC7X – the company’s first ‘smart’ crawler excavator, designed to help operators work faster and more efficiently. The machine offers a number of exciting new features as standard, including Full Electric Hydraulic (FEH) technology. Doosan excavators are well known for offering more innovative features as standard than other machines on the market. In the standard DX225LC-7 model and the rest of the new Doosan DX-7 medium-sized excavator range, for example, the new features provide major enhancements in machine controllability, versatility, operator comfort, uptime and return on investment, with a strong focus on increased productivity and robustness. But the new DX225LC-7X smart model takes this to a new level. As well as the FEH system, other standard features of the DX225LC-7X include: • Integrated 2D machine guidance, • Semi-automatic 2D machine control, • Laser receiver, • E-Fence virtual wall, • Weighing system, Full Electric Hydraulic (FEH) technology Full Electric Hydraulic (FEH) technology is similar to the D-ECOPOWER VBO (virtual bleed off) system now incorporated on the standard DX225LC-7 model and all Doosan crawler excavators from the DX350LC-7 and above. In effect, the FEH is a VBO system without pilot pressure lines. The joysticks and pedals are fully electric, but give the operator the same feeling as hydraulic joysticks. In the FEH system, an electric signal is sent to the central controller and as such is more precise and provides faster information. Back pressure and energy loss are therefore eliminated, by delivering the exact amount of oil needed. As the

system does not use pilot pressure, energy is saved and there is a resultant fuel saving. In fact, the FEH system offers a very significant 8% less fuel burn compared to the D-ECOPOWER VBO system. This is on top of the 7% decrease in fuel consumption already

achieved in the standard DX225LC-7, compared to the previous DX225LC-5 model.

Machine guidance, machine control The integrated machine guidance system on the DX225LC-7X uses sensors mounted on the front and body to recognise the location of each working device and inform/guide it for the operator. Feedback to the operator is provided through audio and visual displays, which allow improved control of the machine in relation to the intended or designed direction of travel. In the onboard machine control system, the sensors mounted on the front and body recognise the location of each working device and support/adjust the front operation to the work as planned. In this way, when the operator uses the arm, bucket or boom, they follow the target line. Thanks to the laser receiver, the system will always receive the reference point, even when the machine changes position, without the operator having to reset the reference point every time the machine is moved. When the DX225LC-7X is delivered to the customer, all the sensors are already calibrated. But the buckets to be used by the customer need to be calibrated, and no specific tools are needed for this. The system will ask the operator to enter the required measurements to finalise the calibration process with around an hour needed to calibrate three buckets.

The Weighing System and Lift Assist function measures and displays the current weight of the bucket as the operator is loading materials and warns the driver when the total loading weight exceeds the target. How do you see its future development? As a company we are always looking to improve our software and to work with various tracking device manufacturers to provide the most reliable and versatile tracking devices on the market. Future

improvements will likely see us upgrading all of our trackers to 4G compatible devices, as the UK gradually phases out the 2G and 3G networks over the next 10 years or so. Otherwise, only time can tell what the future will hold.

What personal involvement have you had in it? What has it meant for you? This product has allowed us as a company to expand the number of sectors that we work with and has meant a large growth of the business over the last three to four years. As the founder and director of Trackit247, I am very invested in the

Mixed messages Office building and road construction are up but contract awards in London are down. The number of new contract awards is up, but their value is down. May 2022 was a month of mixed messages for the UK construction sector. Builders’ Conference CEO Neil Edwards attempts to make sense of it all

The combined value of all the 432 new contract awards recorded on the BCLive league table during the month of May 2022 was £4.75bn. Although that is slightly down on the previous month, it did mean that the £4bn baseline that has held firm each month for more than three years did so once again. Housebuilding contributed £1.24bn to that total, retaining its position – yet again – as the construction industry’s most prolific and stable sector. So far, so predictable. But beyond those two bell-weathers, the BCLive league table for May 2022 pointed to an industry in the midst of uncertain times. And the mixed messages beyond the statistics are a double-edged sword of positive and negative. London was not the top regional source of UK construction activity as it has been for the past four years or more, it failed to hit the now familiar £1bn mark, delivering a regional total of £804.5m. This meant that the nation’s capital was narrowly pipped by the combined and resurgent east and West Midlands, which reported £399.96 and £413.63m respectively for a £813.59m total. Also enjoying a significant uptick were Surrey (£535.7m), the north-west (£518.15m), and Hertfordshire (£410.5m). Does that mean an unexpected slump in demand in London? Or do those monthly figures point towards the regional “levelling up” that politicians have been calling for? It is too early to tell. And the mixed messages do not end there. Housebuilders secured 131 new contract award during May 2022

worth a combined £1.24bn, while the entertainment sector delivered a further £544.29m. Offices accounted for a further £497.85m while roads contributed £413.78m. Yet, in the middle of ongoing political scandals, traditional vote-winning sectors such as education and health could muster only £552.09m between them. As if all that were not sufficient to leave industry-watchers scratching their collective heads, only eight companies reported contract awards valued at more than £100m during the month. Morgan Sindall reported an astonishing 53 new contract awards worth a combined £328m to claim the crown for the highest number of individual projects. Yet Kier Group (which typically secures roughly a contract award for each working day) managed just 14 valued at a combined £70.5m to limp home in a comparatively lowly 16th position on the BCLive league table. Despite the mixed messages and unexpected region and sector twists and turns, several companies hone bright this past month. Laing O’Rourke soared to the number one position on the BCLive league table, courtesy of a single £400m project. That project is for the extension of the Shepperton Studios in Surrey for client Pinewood Group. This project will add a further 450,000 square feet of space to the complex and is part of a wider programme that will ultimately add a remarkable 1.2m square feet of studio space. With its haul of 53 new contract awards, Morgan Sindall stole into second place on the BCLive league table with a cumulative £328m total. The largest of

these is an £80m project of a community hub at Western Way in Bury St Edmunds that will include council offices, private let offices, a medical centre and a leisure centre together with car parking and associated landscaping. Claiming third position on the BCLive league table while simultaneously bolstering the roads sector was Balfour Beatty which secured two projects worth a combined £312m during the month. The largest of these is for improvements to the M25 motorway at Junction 10 (A3) to Junction 16 (M40 interchange) to provide four lanes running through junctions on the M25 between Junction 10 and Junction 16. Skanska took the number four position, securing a single £250m contract for the construction of a new vehicle storage facility for the British Army at Tewkesbury. The BCLive league table top five was completed by Bowmer & Kirkland, which secured eight new contract awards worth a combined £217m. Looking at the positives, the housebuilding sector continues to be the crutch upon which the entire industry leans; there are signs that regions outside London might be enjoying some long overdue positivity; and the uptick in office construction points to an ongoing confidence among the UK business community. Beyond that, however, the overarching feeling in May 2022 is one that would be familiar only to the Grand Old Duke of York’s 10,000 men when they were halfway up a hill: neither up nor down.
