CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY
WELCOME TO THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR! As members of the Chaminade family, we embrace our mission to love, learn, and lead which will guide us, not only through the school year ahead, but far into the future. We are vested in our mission to serve our Chaminade community with integrity in a culture of family spirit. Our guiding principles in developing this plan were to: deliver a robust, Catholic, Marianist educational experience for our students; animate our mission in decision-making processes; promote a culture of family spirit; offer every member of our Chaminade family full and equal access to the Chaminade experience; maintain healthy operations to serve our mission; and actively communicate our Return-to-School plans in three phases. Chaminade is prepared to support everyone in our community upon our reopening in a distance learning environment. We place our trust in God and ask for the Blessed Virgin’s protection as we navigate through this new school year. We rely on the help of our founder, Blessed William Joseph Chaminade who reminds us:
“...we must not become discourage if we encounter some obstacle in the way of necessary change. Never has change been done and never will it be done without difficulty. With patience we will come to the end of all.”
Our Mission We inspire young people to love, learn, and lead through our Catholic and Marianist traditions of a living faith, academic excellence, and moral responsibility.
Our Vision Chaminade College Preparatory graduates are prepared, inspired, and equipped to: • Share God’s love by caring for others and seeking justice and peace. • Learn, adapt, and grow with the world around them. • Become servant leaders and positive contributors to society.
Characteristics of Marianist Education Along with the mission statement, the Characteristics of Marianist Education (CMEs) define the Chaminade experience and guide decision making. • Educate for formation in faith • Provide an integral, quality education • Educate in a family spirit • Educate for service, justice, and peace • Educate for adaptation and change
Core Values • Love of God • Discipleship of Jesus • Mary as a Model • Student-Centered • Inclusivity • Leadership • Innovation • Service to Others

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY On July 31, Chaminade sent all families Phase 2 of our Return-to-School Plans which included an overview of the Distance Learning model and progress on our Hybrid Learning plans. As mentioned in that communication, Chaminade will begin the 2020-2021 year on August 12 in Distance Learning. This comes as a result of directives from the state and county that prohibit schools in Los Angeles County from reopening for on-campus learning until the county is off the state’s monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. The California Department of Public Health developed this framework to support schools as they decide when and how to implement in-person instruction. In line with Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reopening protocols, Chaminade has committed extensive resources to the full development of a hybrid model to permit the school to re-open quickly when county authorization is received. Please understand the fluidity of the pandemic, along with state and local decisions, may result in new protocols and recommendations from health authorities that can affect our learning plans at a moment’s notice. While the content in these Phase 3 plans may seem familiar, you will find the final version of our Distance Learning plans and updates to the following areas: • • • • •
Middle and High School Distance Learning Schedules Professional Learning for Faculty High School Connect Groups Fine Arts High School Athletics
Chaminade will resume communications with all families via Chaminade This Week (CTW) with all beginning on Friday, August 7, 2020. If you would like to download a PDF version of this final Phase 3 communication, please click here. Phase 1-3 communications are also available on our Return-to-School webpage and Family Portal.

CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY
CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY Our Distance Learning Model is informed by Chaminade’s 15 years of providing a quality education in a 1:1 technology-rich environment. It is also guided by experts at the Greeley Center of Catholic Education at Loyola University Chicago and Harvard Graduate School of Education. The Research is Clear - Support for Our Distance Learning Model When incorporating online learning into any learning model, instructors must intentionally design learning experiences that combine elements of live instruction with independent and collaborative study. Research further shows that students are more likely to achieve learning outcomes when teachers integrate the following elements: 1. Explicit instruction 2. Repeated opportunities to practice skills 3. Real-time feedback during the learning process 4. Peer-to-peer interaction 5. Time to process and reflect on learning One of the fundamental Characteristics of Marianist Education is Adaptation and Change. Our rapidly changing society requires students to develop the knowledge, skills, and habits to prepare them to enter academic and professional environments where they must work independently and collaboratively. As a result, we finalized our Distance Learning schedules to allow students in grades 6-12 to practice and develop the following: 1. Stamina to work independently and collaboratively 2. Academic and professional communication skills in online settings 3. Utilizing human, analog, and digital resources to learn and create 4. Flexibility to adapt to external forces and situations 5. Wellness habits, self-care practices, and time management skills to achieve a healthy integration of their academic and personal lives
Many outside of education think that it is practical to proceed with an “instruction as usual” approach to Distance Learning. At first it may seem that instructing students in the same way and time frame online as in a physical classroom is the best approach. However, decades of research about online environments, including the impact of quantity and quality of screen time on student learning, health, and well-being, debunks the misperception that students learn more when sitting for long continuous periods online. In fact, research suggests that continuous synchronous time can actually have a negative impact on learning. Studies show that student learning is most effective when broken up into smaller chunks of content and time. Students need time to study independently and collaborate with peers to make sense of their learning from live sessions.

DISTANCE LEARNING Below is the description of the distance learning schedules and instructional minutes for both the middle school and high school.
MENTOR AND CONNECT GROUPS
CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY
Each student will be assigned to a Mentor Group (middle school) or Connect Group (high school). These groups meet in realtime throughout the week. The purpose of these groups is to help students build community and provide them with social, emotional, and learning support through facilitated activities and discussions.
LIVE SESSIONS Every day before lunch, students engage in live sessions with their teachers and peers. Live sessions are synchronous (learning occurs at the same time). All participants have their cameras turned on. A variety of technology platforms will be utilized (i.e. BlackBoard, Microsoft Teams, Schoology, Zoom).
4
CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY
INDEPENDENT AND COLLABORATIVE STUDY Each day after lunch, students engage in independent or collaborative study, which complements, reinforces, and builds upon the learning from that morning’s live session. Independent and collaborative study is asynchronous (learning may occur at different times). Participants may or may not have their cameras enabled, depending on the activity. Chaminade has created a schedule to help students effectively manage their time independently or collaboratively. A variety of technology platforms will be utilized (i.e., BlackBoard, Microsoft Teams, Schoology, Zoom) Independent Study Learning Activities: • Reading and analyzing texts • Viewing video tutorials • Engaging in research • Writing short and long-form papers • Designing an artifact or experiment • Taking quizzes or tests Collaborative Study Learning Activities: • Completing shared tasks in a pair or group (i.e., partner or group projects) • Participating in discussion with pairs or groups (either on camera or through discussion boards)
During Independent and Collaborative Study, teachers are available to answer students’ questions, provide real-time feedback, and offer additional support and resources related to their learning activities.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES AND SUPPORT Each day after lunch, students also have the opportunity to meet with their teachers and counselors or participate in activities and campus ministry events. However, students must effectively plan their afternoon schedules around their Independent and Collaborative Study time.
INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES Chaminade has reorganized the traditional block schedule into distinct segments of time that balance live instruction, guided application, and independent study. In the distance learning model, the instructional minutes preserve crucial instruction and learning balance, with live class time for direct instruction and practice, guided by the teacher. Outside of live class time, students are encouraged to work individually, in pairs, or small groups during independent and collaborative study.

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY
Assessments Successful student learning depends on frequent, varied assessments that measure progress and provide useful feedback to both the student and teacher. Distance learning at Chaminade will include a variety of purposefully designed assessments that effectively measure student understanding and progress. The formats of these formative and summative assessments will be tailored to optimize student demonstration of learning within the unique conditions of distance learning. Assessment design and implementation will: • Be aligned with clearly articulated learning objectives that reflect essential knowledge and skills. • Be guided by clearly articulated measurement criteria that emphasize learning objectives. • Provide timely checks for student understanding by leveraging a variety of digital tools and applications. • Provide timely written and oral feedback to guide student learning. • Focus on authentic demonstrations of knowledge and skill that point the student toward sophisticated, important application of their learning.
Grading Grades are one indicator of student progress. Both campuses will continue updating grades in live gradebooks and provide progress reports to help students and families monitor progress. The administration is still deciding if/how to administer final examinations and will communicate more information later in the first semester. Middle School Middle school departments reviewed and adjusted Schoology gradebook categories and weights in all content areas to ensure that teachers, families, and students could monitor progress in key content area skills. Gradebook categories and weights allow teachers to determine that each category has enough grades to provide a snapshot of student progress in meeting grade-level proficiency or mastery in key content area skills. Tests and quizzes will be entered in the Schoology gradebook under the category that corresponds to the assessed skills. Teacher feedback and grades on assignments will continue to be posted in the live gradebook on Schoology. Refer to the Schoology gradebook for details about assignments and overall weekly progress. Additionally, the middle school will continue providing progress reports every five weeks and report cards at the end of each semester through NetClassroom. Refer to NetClassroom for snapshots of general progress every five weeks, including the report card published at the end of each semester. The Physical Education and Exploratory departments will continue to assess student progress through the live gradebook on Schoology. Quarter and semester grades for Physical Education and Exploratories will be reported in NetClassroom as Pass/Fail. High School In each department, teachers will continue to collaboratively determine which assessments are graded to let students know how they are progressing as they learn, and which assignments are graded to measure the extent to which students are proficient in content-area knowledge and skills. Clearly articulated assessment criteria will guide the evaluation of student learning.
8
CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY
The high school’s A-F grading scale remains in effect; wherein each letter grade corresponds with degrees of accuracy, quality, and proficiency in demonstrations of student learning. Grades will be entered regularly into NetClassroom, the school’s live grade reporting system so that students and parents can access a timely portrait of student progress in each course. Progress reports will continue to be generated at the nine-week point in the semester to determine students’ academic eligibility and probation status.
Academic Support Chaminade believes that faculty partner with families to provide a student-learning experience. As such, we will work with our families and will communicate regularly on students’ academic progress. Middle School Teachers will continue to communicate with families and students through email, the live gradebook, and progress reports. Grade-level teams of teachers and counselors will continue scheduled ongoing meetings to monitor grade-level and individual student progress. Teachers and counselors will continue using the Students Needing Assignment Completion Support (SNACS) protocol instituted in Spring 2020 to monitor students who appear to need additional support and communicate with families to identify and implement strategies for academic success. Prior to the first day of school, a schedule of teacher office hours will be published to students and families so that students can access content-area teachers during independent and collaborative study time in the afternoons. The middle school will also publish the schedule for independent and collaborative study to support students in practicing and learning how to manage their time effectively. High School Teachers will continue to communicate with families and students through email, the live gradebook, and progress reports. Counselors will collaborate with teachers, students, and families. Regular X-blocks, drop-in tutoring, and Connect Groups will also support students in monitoring their own progress and identifying strategies to improve where needed.
Technology Support Technology support is available virtually and in-person, onsite by appointment. For issues regarding the tablet, contact the Laptop Hospital at ITHelpdesk@chaminade.org. A member of Information Systems will respond through email, phone call, or set up an appointment if onsite support is needed. For issues regarding Blackboard and Schoology, contact the Instructional Technology Specialists (ITS). Middle School ITS: Anthony Ploesch at aploesch@chaminade.org High School ITS: Micheal Huff at mhuff@chaminade.org, or Kyle Wilkerson at kwilkerson@chaminade.org For issues regarding digital platforms used in classrooms, please contact the teacher.
Ongoing Professional Learning Opportunities for Faculty Over the summer, Chaminade provided faculty with two weeks of professional learning, and additional opportunities will be made available during the school year. Professional learning opportunities include: • Planning units and lessons in distance learning and hybrid schedules • Providing students with timely feedback during the instructional process • Instructional strategies that promote peer-to-peer interaction and deeplearning • Best practices in assessment • Digital tools for student and teacher collaboration, productivity, and creation • Diversity, equity, and inclusion to support social and emotional wellbeing of all students

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS Chaminade recognizes that this is a difficult time for students to learn remotely. Please know that we share in that sentiment and, although we are not physically together, we will continue to support our Chaminade family. Policies and Expectations The adjustments made to the daily learning process is a true testament to the strength and resiliency of every Chaminade student, but as Fr. Chaminade himself said long ago, new times demand new methods. As we begin the school year via distance learning, the deans would like to remind Chaminade families that our behavioral expectations have not changed. As a Catholic, Marianist school, our expectation is for students to conduct themselves in an appropriate and respectful manner: to themselves, other students, teachers, and the school. The policies covered in the Chaminade Parent/Student Handbook are still in effect during distance learning. The following are policies to be familiar with as we prepare to start the new school year. Distance Learning Dress Code While students are on camera during distance learning school hours, students are expected to be in a Chaminade polo, Chaminade affiliated t-shirt, or a Chaminade sweatshirt or hoodie. Students must wear their hoods down, and faces must be visible during this time. When students return to school in a hybrid learning model, they will be required to be in a Chaminade affiliated t-shirt or polo and Dennis Uniform shorts, pants, skirts, PE shorts, or Chaminade sweatpants. All other dress code policies, found in the Parent/Student Handbook, will remain in place. For more information about the dress code, please refer to the dress code policy in the middle school and high school parent/ student handbooks. Attendance Regular attendance at school is necessary to ensure a student’s academic progress. Frequent or prolonged absences are disruptive to the educational process whether the student is physically at school or remotely logged in from home. However, we understand that we are in unprecedented times and families will experience difficulties due to extenuating circumstances. We also understand students might be experiencing anxiety or struggling socially, emotionally, or academically due to the pandemic. In these cases, please notify the counselor, so that appropriate attention and support can be given to the student. When appropriate, counselors will inform teachers of extenuating circumstances. Teachers will take attendance using Faculty Access Web (FAW) once students are logged into each class. Please ensure that students are logged into their computer with the camera on at the start of class time. Students should have their face visible by the teachers during class time, be present, and participate when appropriate for the whole class. Honor Code Violations Acts of academic dishonesty violate the values of Chaminade, diminish learning, and are unfair to students who do their own work. For these reasons, academic dishonesty can result in a range of academic and/or disciplinary consequences.
10
CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY
Academic dishonesty, cheating, and plagiarism are considered an attempt to obtain credit through dishonest means. This includes cheating, plagiarism, and any attempt to obtain credit for academic work through fraudulent, deceptive, or dishonest means. Some examples of this include (but are not limited to): • Using another’s work and claiming it as your own. • Copying another’s work or allowing your work to be copied. • Using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information or study aids during any assessments. • Copying from text, websites, or other course materials. • Purchasing a paper or project. • “Recycling” an assignment – submitting an assignment to more than one course. • Manipulating online assessments to achieve a passing score without mastering the content. • Unpermitted collaboration or communication during assessments • Divulging the contents of an assessment in any way to another student who has not yet taken that assessment
Please be aware that while the reasons above are specific to distance learning, all academic integrity policies contained in the Parent/ Student Handbook also apply. A full description of the Chaminade Academic Honor Code Policy can be found in the Middle School Student/Parent Handbook and High School Student/ Parent Handbook. Chaminade students are expected to conduct themselves with academic integrity in all of their studies, including any assessment submitted via online learning. Students who choose otherwise are subject to both academic and disciplinary consequences.
To help foster a successful, responsible distant learner, Chaminade is putting the following protocol in place: • When on camera, students are expected to follow the dress code. • Students should have an appropriate background behind them. • Students are never permitted to write, say, or post inappropriate things online (i.e., discussion boards, live office hours, live instructional sessions, social media, etc.). • Students are never permitted to video/audio record live sessions or take pictures or screenshots, without teacher permission. For educational purposes, teachers will record live sessions and post on Schoology/Teams/Blackboard for students to reference independently if they missed a session or would like to review the information. • Students should not receive assistance from others during a live session. • Students should please keep in mind that distance learning is still face-to-face learning. Students should conduct themselves in the same manner they would if they were physically present in class.

STUDENT SUPPORT AND WELLNESS Chaminade Counselors will offer virtual services to connect with students and help them stay on track and informed. The goal is to continue to support students across all grade levels academically, socially, and emotionally, and ensure that they remain connected to their counselor. The Counseling department remains as a resource for all students and families even while being physically apart. One-on-One Counseling As the fall term begins, all counselors will reach out to students to ensure that they know how to contact and connect with their counselors. Counselors will utilize a variety of technology platforms (Microsoft Teams, Schoology, Zoom, and Sign-Up Genius) to set up individual appointments with students for one-on-one counseling.
Mental Health Counselors are aware that students may be impacted in multiple ways by COVID-19 and are mindful of their emotional health and well-being by offering curated resources, activities, and exercises to help them cope, feel connected, and be in tune with their learning. Moreover, at the middle school, counselors will provide students with a “Virtual Calming Room” in Schoology, which will include wellness and mental health resources. At the high school, counselors will continue to offer “Wellness Wednesdays,” which gives students opportunities to connect with counselors and learn strategies to manage stress and anxiety. Finally, the high school counseling department will resume its #BREAKTHESTIGMA parent education series virtually.
Support Chaminade will ensure that students are respected, accepted and supported by teachers and peers, and feel a sense of belonging. Middle School Utilizing the WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) Program, new students will be supported by a WEB leader to help them navigate through their first year at Chaminade. With the newly created Mentor Groups Program, all students will be mentored and learn how to develop their skills and dispositions as they take ownership of their learning. Lastly, counselors will continue to use the SNACS (Students Needing Assignment Completion Support) Program to help those individual students who are experiencing difficulty in completing assignments.

CAMPUS MINISTRY Campus Ministry will continue to develop and deliver meaningful and engaging experiences of the faith. The department will remain intentional in reaching each student and helping them grow, discover, and form their faith lives.
Monthly Livestreamed Masses/Prayer Services In an effort to help our Chaminade families worship together, all Masses and Prayer Services will be livestreamed during school hours or after school.
Retreats Campus Ministry will offer modified versions of their grade-level retreats to help students deepen their relationship with God and build community with their peers. Middle School Grade-level themed retreats will be offered online using one of our selected technology platforms. Students will be divided into smaller groups that are more manageable for an online experience. They will hear from keynote speakers, share in small group discussions, and participate in community-building activities. High School All overnight retreats will be suspended for the first semester and will resume in the second semester, pending state and local health guidance. However, campus ministry will offer modified grade-level themed retreat experiences outside of class time for students to grow in their relationship with God, self, and others.
Faith Activities Campus Ministry will promote other faith-filled opportunities to help students deepen their relationship with God and connect with peers. These faith opportunities will be conducted through one of our technology platforms during independent and collaborative study hours each week. Middle School SHINE (Students Help Inspire New Experiences) members will invite students to participate in monthly faith-sharing experiences. These short meetings will focus on scripture, testimony, building community, and growing in faith. All faith-sharing experiences will be shared through social media and our Schoology platform with students and families. Lastly, Campus Ministry created “Prayer Share which will highlight prayers conducted by a SHINE student and faculty/ staff member. These prayers will be shared on our Campus Ministry social media platform. High School Marianist LIFE (Living In Faith Experiences) members will offer faith activities to help students build community and pray with each other. Campus Ministry will also continue to offer bible study sessions and Ministry Mondays, which focus on a specific topic in spirituality and Catholic Social Teaching.

However, if students choose to participate in any on-site/in-person service, it should only be done according to the latest health guidance and parent’s discretion. Apostolic Works helps students discover and develop their gifts and talents to help build up communities. Through this program, students will experience a discernment prayer service in their Religion classes, research opportunities for service, and complete an action plan of service where their gifts and talents will be served. They will also learn how to utilize the x2VOL online service tracking platform. Finally, Campus Ministry will develop a resource guide for a wide range of remote opportunities, which will be available on Chaminade’s webpage and publicized in the weekly CTW (Chaminade This Week).

Students will meet in houses daily in small groups (mentor groups), via House Schoology Conferences. Fine Arts Chaminade’s Fine Arts programs relating to instrumental music, choral, dance, and drama will deliver a distance learning educational experience to help students rehearse and hone their craft. More information will be communicated in the CTW.
Athletics In examining the most effective way to deliver fall, winter, and spring sports for 2020-2021 school year, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) decided to condense the three seasons of sports into two. CIF also developed a sports calendar to help schools plan out the two seasons. For more information on the CIF’s most recent guidelines, please click here. Middle School

The middle school sports program will not offer any competitive sports in the Fall. All of the leagues that the middle school participates in are following CIF’s guidelines and look to begin sports in December/ January. More information will be available as we approach October and November.
The high school athletic department and all coaches continue to work together to help determine student athlete needs, practice schedules, and facility use based on the CIF’s schedules for the two sports seasons.
ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT AND ADMISSIONS Chaminade’s Admissions Departments are open to serve the needs of our families during this difficult time. Both campuses have developed protocols to allow families to safely tour the campuses in person or virtually. The Admissions Offices are prepared to deliver events for prospective families to learn more, whether they would prefer to do so remotely or in-person. Middle School
High School
The middle school’s admissions office will host a student orientation for incoming 6th graders and transfers, which will allow students to meet each other, their teachers, and learn about the Chaminade experience. Moreover, a parent orientation will be offered in the second week of school to introduce aspects of Chaminade life and provide resources that will assist in supporting their child’s education. As admissions re-imagines the onboarding process, we know that students will need to be connected more than ever. With our WEB leaders, counselors, administrators, and Admissions Team, we will design opportunities for students to feel welcomed to our Chaminade family.
Entering freshmen and transfers in all grade levels will enjoy a full Chaminade LINK experience to help them with the academic and social transition to high school. Parents will also have an opportunity to get involved in the community through virtual events like the “Chama-Mama” welcome event and the “Chaminade Virtual Parent Orientation.” Admissions will also provide updates through our social media platforms to make sure that our families feel the warmth of our Chaminade family!
