Dear Patron of the Arts,
It’s an interesting time. On the one hand, life is seemingly back to normal. On the other hand, it is a new normal. We are human beings who have overcome something larger than we could have ever imagined in our lifetime. And we have done so, together. In the beginning, after we came out of hiding, we wore masks and then we were allowed to take off the masks. Now, they are optional. For a while, we were required to keep a distance of five or six feet between ourselves and other mammals or humans, shall we say. We all furiously washed our hands. Perhaps, some of us are still doing all of these things, or some of these things. But, we are here and we have overcome and are moving forward.
The Antrobus Family that you are about to meet in Thornton Wilder’s THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH have overcome the Ice Age, a flood, and world war. They are continually reinventing themselves, moving forward, finding the will and the need to be inspired in order to survive and they do this as a family. Life is not easy, sometimes they complain, get short with each other, sometimes they are tested, but together they find their way back to what is important, they find the resilience to survive and have managed to stay a family for five thousand years.
This 1943 Pulitzer Prize winning play begs us to delve deep and wonder what is keeping us moving forward, what is enabling us to be inspired, and how we are managing to survive by the skin of our teeth. This fable offers a message of new beginnings, of family, giving grace, what we need to feed our souls, and hope for all of humanity. And has a dinosaur and a woolly mammoth! What more can you ask for? I have always wanted to direct this play and now here we are!
Thank you to an incredible creative team!! Thank you to Jeff McLaughlin, our set & lighting designer, Lacey Anzelc, our scenic artist, Nick Pelayo, our master electrician, Nancy Dobbs Owen, our choreographer, Stephen Bishop, fight director & gun handler, Lulu Bishop, our assistant director, Luis Ramirez, wig master, Nick Santiago, projection designer & his assistant Fritz, our new friend, Matt Gerlach, carpenter, our old friend and interim tech director, Chris Jensen, and shop assistant, Brother Tom Oles. We would also like to thank our Drama Mamas for being so amazing!
Congratulations to the Chaminade Players Cast and Crew! So glad we have had the opportunity to tell this story together! Bravo!! “Have you milked the mammoth?”
Yours in the arts, Yvette L. Bishop Drama Director
