TIPS FROM THE PRO

The Knees Are the “Keys” to a Solid Golf Swing

Most golfers focus on their arms and club when thinking about their game. This makes sense, as the arms and hands are the only direct connection to the golf club. However, I’d argue that for many golfers, learning to use their knees effectively could address a host of common swing issues There’s no shortage of myths about the golf swing, most of which are misguided: “Keep your head down,” “Don’t flex your right knee,” “You need to rotate more,” and so on. While they might sound helpful, these cues can often do more harm than good.

The role of the knees in a proper golf swing is critical for three reasons:

• They enable proper turning.

• They help maintain your tilt or inclination to the ground, allowing you to use ground forces.

• They influence the path of your hands during the swing.

To use your knees properly, start with a slight knee flex at setup. As you reach the top of your backswing, your knee flex should change. For right-handed golfers, the right leg should straighten slightly while the left knee increases its flex. Golfers who don’t adjust their knee flex often struggle with flat shoulders, poor inclination, and a compromised swing arc. Mastering proper knee movement can make a significant difference in your game.

COURSE UPDATES

Due to cold temperatures this month, we focused on greens maintenance during two separate sessions to ensure they remain in optimal condition. The colder weather has certainly kept us on our toes, and we’ve also experienced two snow events, which further impacted our work schedule.

Even with the challenging weather, our staff has been hard at work on several important winter projects. We've been focusing on course maintenance tasks such as cleaning and organizing our equipment storage areas, repainting necessary surfaces, and edging both the drains and irrigation heads. We’ve also been clearing tree debris along the gas line to ensure that everything remains safe and functional.

In addition to the routine tasks, we've been putting extra effort into maintaining our equipment. This includes washing and waxing machinery to protect it during the winter months, as well as servicing and rebuilding equipment to ensure everything runs smoothly when the season picks up again.

Looking ahead, we’re preparing for the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and are thrilled to have 43 volunteers already signed up. We’re grateful for their support and excited to see everyone come together to make the event a success!
