WIN
a BioSnacky® DIY Sprouting Kit containing a germinator jar, 3 packets of seeds and a BioSnacky lunch bag
Have a sprouting good summer with Nature’s Remedies! Vote for Sprouts! Yes really! Nutritionists speak very highly of these little ‘power pellets’. Imagine all that energy a teeny weeny seed requires to push out a baby plant and you’re going to eat it. Baby plants/sprouts contain high concentrations of valuable enzymes, proteins, mineral substances, trace elements and natural vitamins. All things essential for life. Sprouts also contain excellent fibre that is beneficial to the intestines and regulates the digestive process and finally, since they grow right up until the moment they’re picked, practically no nutrients are lost. Sprinkle them on salads, pop into sandwiches (perfect for kiddies lunchboxes, add them to a stir fry or use them as a garnish. Nature’s Remedies has teamed up with A. Vogel to give two lucky winners the chance to win a BioSnacky® DIY Sprouting Kit containing a
germinator jar, 3 packets of seeds and a BioSnacky® lunch bag. This is an ideal project for encouraging kids to eat their ‘greens’ – happy sprouting! Grow your own BioSnacky® at home in as little as 3 days! Great for kids and adults alike, sprouting is a great way to always have a fresh supply of nutritious salad growing all year round. Why bother growing your own? They are quick and easy to grow, kids love them, children are far more likely to eat food that they have helped to grow, so sprouting is a great way of getting some healthy food into them. It couldn’t be simpler: just rinse, soak, rinse, soak and watch them develop. You’ll have a mini organic garden in the corner of your kitchen in no time. They’re always on the grow! For best results use organic, GM free, nonirradiated seeds such as BioSnacky® – available from Nature’s Remedies, 3 Market Street, Southpor t, and all good independent health food stores. To win please pick up a crossword from our store.

GOOD ADVICE
Stay Sun Safe this summer
Staff at a health charity have revealed how to protect your children from sunburn – as it can increase the risks of skin cancer later in life.
The warning from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention says that kids don’t have to be at the pool, beach, or on vacation to get too much sun – and that skin needs protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they’re outdoors. They advise to:
• Seek shade. UV rays are strongest and most harmful during midday, so it’s best to plan indoor activities then. If this is not possible, seek shade under a tree, an umbrella, or a pop-up tent. Use these options to prevent sunburn, not to seek relief after it’s happened.
• Cover up. When possible, long-sleeved shirts and long pants and skirts can provide protection from UV rays. Clothes made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection. A wet T-shirt offers much less UV protection than a dry one, and darker colors may offer more protection than lighter colors. Some clothing certified under international standards comes with information on its ultraviolet protection factor. • Get a hat. Hats that shade the face, scalp, ears, and neck are easy to use and give great protection. Baseball
caps are popular among kids, but they don’t protect their ears and neck. If your child chooses a cap, be sure to protect exposed areas with sunscreen.
• Wear sunglasses. They protect your child’s eyes from UV rays, which can lead to cataracts later in life. Look for sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible. • Apply sunscreen. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and UVA and UVB (broad spectrum) protection every time your child goes outside. For the best protection, apply sunscreen generously 30 minutes before going outdoors. Don’t forget to protect ears, noses, lips, and the tops of feet. • Take sunscreen with you to reapply during the day, especially after your child swims or exercises. This applies to waterproof and water-resistant products as well. TURNING PINK? Unprotected skin can be damaged by the sun’s UV rays in as little as 15 minutes. Yet it can take up to 12 hours for skin to show the full effect of sun exposure. So, if your child’s skin looks ‘a little pink’ today, it may be burned tomorrow morning. To prevent further burning, get your child out of the sun.

GRAVITY DEFYING FUN
Jump Start for kids
Jump Start is an exercise and nutrition programme for school children. Jump Warehouse Southport has entered into partnership with the Sports Skills Academy to create a programme of activities aimed at children in our local area. Jump Start Enrichment 2 hour session :
• 1 hour fun exercise and games session on the trampolines • 1 hour lesson on nutrition and a healthy lifestyle
• Water refreshment provided for all children throughout the 2 hour session • Jump socks provided for all children
All sessions will be taught by the Sport Skills Academy who already work in schools across North Sefton.
During the sessions the trampoline area will be closed off to the public allowing each group to have a totally safe learning environment.
This is truly gravity defying fun! Check out their website at www.jumpwarehouse-southport.co.uk To book contact Shelley Ball or Dionne Owen on 01704 829292 or email them at jumpwarehousesouthport@gmail.com One of the great things about trampolining is that anyone can do it, from young children to their parents and even grandparents.
They have special sessions for those 5 years of age and under, however anybody can jump at anytime but under 5’s must be accompanied by an adult. This is to make sure big people don’t accidentally bump into small people.

MATHS & ENGLISH TUITION
GettingExtraHelp Students range from age 6 to18 (Years 2–13); there is a free consultation, free enrolment (throughout the year) and a free trial lesson.
If you have been thinking of Maths or English tuition for your child then look no further than Tuitionin!
Tuitionin is a family run tuition business which has been established for over 17 years. Our teaching Centres are based in Maghull and Crosby. With our Crosby branch relocating into larger, newly refurbished premises in Crosby Village (above Home Bargains), there is no better time to enrol!
Tuitionin has an outstanding success record with regards to Entrance Exams, SATS, GCSE and A level maths. We also offer individual teaching for mature students, specialising in QTS. Both Centres have DBS checked staff comprising of Managers, fully qualified teachers, teaching and administrative assistants. At Tuitionin we pride ourselves in working hard to see that every child has the opportunity to flourish and reach their full potential. THE EMOJI MOVIE
THE EMOJI MOVIE The Emoji Movie unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favourite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions.
Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer). Together, they embark on an epic “appventure” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene.
S E I OV LEAP!
Paris, 1884. A orphaned girl arrives in Paris from Brittany. Félicie Milliner is 11 and has no money but one big, passionate dream: to become a dancer. With nothing left to lose, Félicie takes a big risk: she 'borrows' a spoiled brats identity and enters the Opera Ballet School. But how long can she be someone else?
Mentored by the tough and mysterious cleaner, Odette, Félicie learns that talent is not enough - it takes hard work to be better than her ruthless, conniving fellow students.
CARS 3
Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) returns to the racetrack to take on a younger rival in this animated sequel from Pixar and Disney.
CARS 3
That, and friendship. Felicie's inventive, exhausting and charismatic best friend Victor also has a dream: becoming a famous inventor. Together, they both encourage each other to reach for the stars.
But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.

making family camping easier 1. Camping Toys Give your kids a play version of dangerous camping equipment (like burners and Swiss army knives) to keep them from messing with the real thing and prevent danger!
2. A Hand Washing Station These are easy to make and will keep your kids’ hands clean even when you’re away from running water. Take baby wipes for serious mess and set up a box in the porch of the tent with baby wipes and hand sanitiser in it – plus a towel for when you come in when it’s been raining! 3. Glow In The Dark Bubbles These are a terrific activity for kids after dark and a cheap hit with the kids! Also along these lines, glow sticks and sparklers go down a treat!
4. Foam Floor Tiles Putting these down in your tent will make the floor “crawl-friendly” for your toddler – and all-in-one macs including legs for under-twos will save you a lot of mess!
5. Sunscreen Lotion With Bug Guard Why not cover both camps at once? Also, if you’re planning on spending a lot of time at the beach, a UV-resistant wetsuit with full legs and long sleeves reduces the amount of places you need to protect with sunscreen!
6. Named water bottles When it’s boiling hot and everyone’s running around, it can be hard to keep track of how much water or squash everyone has drunk. Putting everyone’s name on their water bottle with Sharpie prevents arguments and allows you to note if someone’s heading towards being dehydrated!
7. A First Aid Kit You need a bigger first aid kit than usual when camping with kids, one that should definitely include extra must-have items including sunburn cream, waterproof plasters and antihistamines for bug bites and hay fever – plus tummy bug pills, just in case! 8. A map of the stars – or you can teach your kiddies about constellations with the award winning app, Skyview: Explore The Universe
9. Make a poster with the kids before you go of animals, birds and plants that you are hoping to see – and mark on each that you do with a gold star sticker! 10. A Huge Umbrella These are great in a downpour, of course, but they’re just as good at limiting sun exposure, which is super important for little ones when they’re outdoors all day.

KIDS APPS
POKÉMON GO
FREE
SAGO MINI ROAD TRIP
Pokémon GO is such a simple and yet absolutely brilliant idea that has captured the world’s attention. The initial hype may have died down, but special events and extra Pokémon to catch has kept our kids perpetually interested.
Designed specifically for toddlers and young children from 2-5, Mini Road trip is made by Sago (the sister company of Toca Boca).
Despite the safety concerns, Pokémon GO is deserving of real credit for getting a nation (not just kids) off the sofa and into the great outdoors. It’s a power-draining but oh-so-addictive app, don’t pick up Pokémon GO unless you’re prepared to take your kids to the local park, high street and pretty much everywhere to catch the monsters.
There are six destinations, although only three appear at any one time, which is a little confusing. There are no rules for driving, so kids can pick up the car and fly through the air if they like.
A S D KI
It encourages them to walk around to real-world locations to catch Pokémon and collect things from Pokéstops, as well as battle in gyms.
YOUTUBE KIDS
FREE
Kids can enjoy the fun of a whole road trip from packing a suitcase (complete with wacky items such as a chocolate cake), choosing a car (there are lots, including a shoe and a gherkin) and stopping en route for petrol and at a car wash.
It’s great value at £2.99 with no ads.
£2.99
In our experience kids love to watch videos on YouTube. Too much, in fact. And not everything on YouTube is suitable for children.
LEGO JUNIORS CREATE & CRUISE
No filtering system is perfect, so supervision is still required (that’s our advice, anyway) but this free app is a must-install.
Build your own truck, then use it to bring your cargo to its right destination, and collect coins to earn more LEGO parts. Fun, educational and satisfying. And that’s just for the parents.
But Google has made a child-friendly app which - aside from having a simpler interface - filters out the bad stuff and tries its best to make sure they only see what is appropriate.
FREE
A game of imagination and building skill, LEGO Juniors Create & Cruise is aimed at children from ages four to seven years.

TOCA LIFE: VACATION
Toca Life: Vacation is part of the Toca Life series. Like the others, a digital playset that lets kids pretend they’re going on holiday. The main screen acts as a navigation tool so kids can tap on the place they want to play: the airport, the hotel, the beach, etc.
Just about everything you can see is interactive: suitcases can be opened and their contents rearranged; characters can be dressed up with clothes from hangers or in the shop, and can be accessorised. Our testers loved that the airport included an aeroplane where they could pretend their characters were flying to and from their holiday destination, and that they could feed them snacks and drinks. This is an app with hours and hours of potential play for imaginative minds. And that makes the price an absolute steal, especially given that there are no ads or in-app purchases. £2.99
DESPICABLE ME: MINION RUSH
FREE
You love Despicable Me, right? Minion Rush is a great action arcade game where the little yellow Minions jump, fly, dodge obstacles, collect bananas, ride the Fluffy Unicorn, and defeat villains in a variety of different missions.
You can customise your Minion with costumes, weapons, and power-ups. Earning new locations and different Minions makes this free game a lot of fun for Despicable Me fans and anyone who likes bananas. There are in-app purchases available but not buying any doesn’t affect game play in any way.
MAGIC PIANO
FREE
Available on practically every platform, this addictive - and great-sounding - game lets you play well-known tunes without actually having any musical talent. You just have to tap vaguely in the right area of the screen at the right time to a) make it sound right and b) get a high score. All of these apps that we have reviewed are available on both Apple iOS and Android devices 123GO! 41 SPO1736 123GO! 2017.indd 41

MAKING EXERCISE FUN! Parents face ever increasing challenges in their quest to get their children to live healthy, active lifestyles through exercise. With the rise in popularity of televisions, mobile phones, tablets and video games, it has become even more difficult to motivate children to be active.
However just when it seems all your efforts are in vain..... do not despair! Here are 10 fun and easy ways to ensure your children stay on the move, learn about their bodies and have fun along the way! 1. Walk or cycle to and from school with the kids as often as possible.
2. Build a den or treehouse with them in the school holidays. Or, under supervision, encourage them to climb a tree or two. 3. Go roller skating, rollerblading or skateboarding, indoors or outside. 4. Take part in an activity challenge together, such as working towards a fun run or a walk for charity. Find out about charity walks in your area.
5. Take the dog for a walk. If you don't have one of your own, ask if you can take a neighbour's or friend's dog instead. 6. Support your kids in sports, clubs or any other activities that may interest them. Joining a weekend club sport ensures commitment to a team as well as regular exercise. Find all kinds of sporting facilities in your area. 7. Find time every weekend to do something active with your children. Play frisbee or football in the park, go trampolining, or try indoor rock climbing.
8. Fly a kite. The Kite Society of Great Britain can point you to a number of groups that regularly meet for special flying days with experienced members who offer advice and assistance. Some also run kite-making workshops. 9. Try a beach holiday. When they hit the sand, children find a multitude of ways to exercise, including games, swimming, and plenty of running around. Or try an activity-based holiday. 10. The National Parks website has lists of events such as guided walks and children's fun days for fresh ideas for active days out.

STAY KIDS ONLINE
SAFE ONLINE
The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) has teamed up with mobile phone provider O2 to help you keep your children safe when using the internet, social networks, apps, games and more.
Their four key tips are:
• explore the online world together
• talk to your child about staying safe online
• manage the software and tools your family use
• agree rules about what’s acceptable and what’s not
They have shared that talking to your child – openly, and regularly – is the best way to help keep them safe online. You might find it helpful to start with a family discussion to set boundaries and agree what’s appropriate. Or you might need a more specific conversation about an app or website your child wants to use or something you’re worried about.
If you’re not sure where to start then explore sites and apps together, talk about what might be OK for children of different ages and be positive about what you see, but also be open about concerns you have, for example “I think this site’s really good” or “I’m a little worried about things I’ve seen here.” Talk to your child about what you think is appropriate – but also involve them in the conversation. Ask what they think is OK for children of different ages – they’ll feel involved in the decision-making.
Be aware that your child might talk about friends who use apps or visit sites that you’ve decided aren’t suitable. 46 123GO! SPO1736 123GO! 2017.indd 46
21/06/2017 14:00
KIDS ONLINE
Be ready to discuss your reasons, but recognise that they may not agree with you. Listen carefully for the reasons why.
Advice you’ll find on the website includes:
Go through a final list of sites you both agree are OK, and work out when you’ll next discuss it. Ask about things they might see online which make them feel uncomfortable
Talk about things they, or their friends, have seen that made them feel uncomfortable:
1. Be specific. What exactly made them feel uncomfortable and why? Is it people or animals being hurt? Nasty comments about others? 2. Link these to things in the real world, and explain that you’re always here to protect and help them online and off.
3. Reassure your child that they can always talk to you about anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. 4. Show them how to report or block on the sites and apps they use. Use Net Aware to find out how.
5. Tell them you’ll help them to report anything upsetting they’ve seen, or to deal with online bullying. For more information, visit www.net-aware.org.uk

THE THREE LITTLE PUGS AND THE BIG BAD CAT by Becky Davies Here’s a book that puts a modern spin on the distinguished childhood tale that we all know and love. It tells the tale of Bubbles, Bandit and Beauty and their race against time to get busy building and avoid the huffs and puffs of Big Bad Cat.

SLUMBER PARTIES
COME ON OVER TO MY PLACE ... In an age where children are constantly bombarded with technology, sometimes it’s nicer (and cheaper) to take birthday parties or other special events back to another era, where slumber parties ruled.
But, whereas sleepovers used to be the quick fail-safe of a pizza and a video, here’s a list of ideas to help even those on a pretty tight budget to create an unforgettable modern slumber party! 1. Transform a bedroom by affixing a mixture of bright patterned sheets and thin netting from a central point to the bedroom walls. If you don’t want to create holes in the wall or sheets, simply tie these to the light fitting and affix to handles or permanently fixed, steady items.
2. Blow up balloons and together with the Birthday girl/boy, paint the bottom half with glue (holding the
neck) before dipping in glitter – then fix to the ceiling in batches to create a high-end effect!
3. If you’re not having too many children you could give guests matching pyjamas. These only need be from a discount chain such as Primark or the like, but remember to ask parents for sizes first!
Popcorn fun
4. It’s really easy to set up a ‘photo booth’ with props like tiaras, silly hats, feather boas and funny sunglasses – and print off a copy of all of the photos for all of the guests to take home in their party bag!
5. Blow up party balloons and write times on them – 6pm, 7pm, 8pm, etc. – which you can pop at the right time. Make sure to write the next activity on a slip of paper and put it inside with glitter so the excitement builds with each balloon. These need not be hugely expensive and could involve traditional games

SLUMBER PARTIES such as musical chairs (keep the music current), nail varnishing or face paints … or even cake making if you’re adventurous.
Biscuit decorating
6. Personalise inexpensive plain pillow cases with permanent markers – and the kids can take these home too!
7. Make natural face masks for a night of fun – recipes online include bananas, oats, sugar scrubs and these can be very cheap to make as well as great fun. Check with parents regarding any allergies!
arrangements and lower the lights a little. Try to get the kids settled into less physical activities (this is where movies are always useful).
Be prepared for all eventualities. Make sure you have an extra toothbrush available or a pair of extra pants and socks and some clothes ... one never quite knows! WHO YOU GONNA CALL?
8. Biscuit decorating always goes down a treat!
Also there may be a time when you have to arrange a quick exit. Amazing how one can miss quiet home life all of a sudden.
10. How about decorating flip flops or matching slipper socks!
Follow those few rules and your slumber party will be easy (or at least easier) to manage and maybe repeat.
9. Set up an ice cream topping ‘sweetie bar’ that they can visit before watching a movie – bowls of 10 types of sweets to throw on top of a big ball of vanilla is always a firm favourite!
When that happens a quick telephone call to the parents of your guest will be essential. Have their contact numbers at the ready!
But before you decide on a summer slumber party just make sure you and your child or children have tried a simple sleepover first.
SHUT EYE TIME Okay, so you know you won’t have the little darlings off to the land of nod anytime soon BUT you can still control things.
Right at the beginning tell them what time lights will be out (understanding that they will probably fall asleep two hours later) so make it relatively early. An hour before the proposed time, repeat the

IT’S TIME TO GET COOKING!
Mexican wraps to get the whole family in the kitchen – fill flour tortillas with marinated chicken and peppers Method 1. Grown-ups: Put the chicken and marinade ingredients in a bowl and cover. Put in the fridge for at least two hours.
2. Children: If your children are 5 or over, you can get them to roughly chop the pepper, roasted pepper, apple and tomatoes for the salsa using a good quality firm plastic knife or cutlery knife. Otherwise do this yourself. Younger children can pick the leaves from the coriander and mix them into the salsa.
! K O CO • 4 chicken breasts, cut into chunks • olive oil, for frying For the marinade • 4 limes, juice only • 2 tsp fajita seasoning • 4 spring onions, finely sliced • 1 fat garlic clove, crushed For the salsa • 1 red pepper • ½ jar roasted pepper (we used Gaea Red Peppers Flame Roasted 290g) • 1 small apple, peeled • 4 ripe tomatoes • ½ lime, juice only • small bunch coriander, leaves picked • chilli sauce, to taste (optional) For the guacamole • 2 very ripe avocados, halved and stone removed • ½ lime, juice only • grated cheese, to serve To serve • 6 - 8 tortillas (you can now get mini tortillas for kids) • soured cream (optional)
3. Grown-ups: Tip the salsa ingredients into a food processor, along with the lime juice and a little seasoning and pulse until finely chopped. Take out 2 large spoons of the mixture for younger children, then add chilli sauce, if using, and pulse again to combine. 4. Children: Squeeze or spoon the avocado into a bowl and use a potato masher to mash it. Stir in the lime juice and some black pepper with a spoon. Lime juice can sting so grown ups may want to squeeze them for younger children. 5. Grown-ups: Heat a little olive oil in a frying pan and pour the contents of the chicken bowl into the pan. Cook for 5- 8 minutes or until the chicken chunks are cooked through.
6. Children: Put the grated cheese, salsa (for grown-ups and children), guacamole and sour cream in separate colourful bowls to put on the table.
7. Grown-ups: Heat the tortillas according to the pack instructions and put the cooked chicken in a bowl. Show children how to fill and roll their tortilla.
8. Children: Lay out your tortilla, choose your toppings, roll them up and eat! 123GO! 57

C S ’ T LE Ingredients
• 2 large tortilla wraps • 4 eggs • chopped vegetables (optional) • 6 slices salami • 3 cherry tomatoes, halved, plus extra to serve • handful basil leaves • vegetable sticks, to serve
Method 1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Using a 12cm cutter (or a small plate) cut circles from the large tortilla wraps – you should get 6. Use the circles to line 6 holes of a muffin tin, pushing them into the holes to make cases.
2. Beat the eggs and pour into the tortilla cases (you can add some chopped vegetables too, if you like). Top each case with a slice of salami and 1/2 a cherry tomato. Bake for 15 mins until the egg has set. Top with a few basil leaves, if you like, and serve with extra tomatoes and vegetable sticks. Check-out page 30 for details of how to make these fabulous MILKSHAKE ICE POPS
Ingredients
• 2 handfuls cornflakes, about 25g/1oz • 225g/ 8oz beef mince • small bunch basil leaf, ripped into small pieces • 1 large egg, beaten • few handfuls plain flour, about 75g/2½ oz • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 6 each mini burger buns, lettuce leaves and tomato slices with tomato ketchup, to serve Method 1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. First, crush the cornflakes by placing them in a freezer bag, then breaking with the rolling pin. This is fun (but mind your fingers) and try not to bash them to dust, just to rough flakes. Put in a bowl.
2. Tip the mince into another bowl, add the basil and a little ground pepper. For lean mince you may need to add 1 tbsp beaten egg to help it bind (stick together), then mix it well. Put some flour on a plate and some beaten egg on another plate.
3. Take about a sixth of the mince mix and shape it into a small burger. Do this by squashing it quite firmly in the palm of your hand. (Burgershaping will transfer a skill your child may have from playing with modelling clay to the kitchen as they create a ball in their palm, then squash it into a flatter patty.) 4. Next roll the burger in the flour. Then roll it all over in a little egg. Then roll it quite liberally in the crushed cornflakes. Now place it on the oiled baking sheet and start the process again until you have used up all the mix. Try to keep the sizes even so that the burgers cook in the same time. 5. Lightly drip oil onto the top of each burger using a pastry brush and bake in the centre of the oven for 15-20 mins until cooked through. Serve the burgers in the split buns with lettuce, tomato slices and some ketchup.

! K O CO Ingredients
• 200g caster sugar • 200g butter, softened • 4 eggs • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 200g self-raising flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 3 tbsp milk • 200g punnet raspberries • 140g marshmallows
Method 1. Grease a 23cm-deep, loose-bottomed cake tin and cut out a circle of baking parchment to fit into the bottom. Cut a thick strip of parchment to fit around the side of the tin. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5.
Put the sugar and butter into a large mixing bowl. Using an electric whisk (or wooden spoon if you’ve got more time and energy), beat them together until creamy and soft. Crack in the eggs, one by one, giving a good beat after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract, then the flour and baking powder, then stir through the milk to loosen the mixture. Carefully stir in half the raspberries, making sure you don’t mix too vigorously or they will fall apart. 2. Cook the cake for 25-30 mins until just about cooked through. Then, carefully take it out of the oven. Scatter the marshmallows all over the cake, trying to leave a 2cm border round the edge of the tin as the marshmallows will expand when cooking, then tuck raspberries into any gaps. Return to the oven for another 10 mins until the cake has fully cooked through and the marshmallows are lightly browned and gooey. Leave for 5 mins, then ease out of the tin, cut up and eat.Top with a few basil leaves, if you like, and serve with extra tomatoes and vegetable sticks.
Ingredients
For the topping • 80g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing • 150g light muscovado sugar • ½ tsp vanilla bean paste • 4 large bananas For the cake batter • 240g plain flour • 2 ½ tsp baking powder • 1 tsp cinnamon • ½ tsp ground ginger • 300g golden caster sugar • 120g unsalted butter, very soft • 3 large eggs • 150ml soured cream Method 1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and lightly grease a deep 23cm round cake tin, lining the base with baking parchment.
2. To make the topping, put the butter and sugar in a small saucepan and cook over a medium heat until melted and combined. Add the vanilla and mix together. Pour the caramel into the cake tin and spread in an even layer. Cut the bananas in half lengthways and arrange on top of the caramel, cut-side down.
3. To make the batter, put all the ingredients in a large bowl with 1/4 tsp salt. Use an electric mixer to beat together on a low speed until the batter is smooth and evenly mixed. Pour the batter on top of the bananas and level out with a spatula. Bake in the oven for 55 mins-1 hr or until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. If the cake begins to look too dark, cover with foil after 45 mins. Allow to cool in the tin for 10 mins before turning out onto a plate. Best served warm but also delicious at room temperature. Best eaten within two days. 123GO! 59

LET THEM GET THEIR HANDS DIRTY
WH
Kids love getting dirty
Growing Vegetables Why not get your young ones growing vegetables?
Consider varieties that are easy to sow and grow, that will be quick to yield visible results. The best vegetables to grow are those that:
• Are easy to sow, especially those with large seeds like courgettes • Germinate quickly, to keep those short attention spans occupied • You can sow in situ, so you do not have the trouble of transplanting • Produce quick crops
• Require minimum maintenance other than watering and feeding • Will continue cropping
Grow food that you know your children already like or food you have a good chance of persuading them to munch.
Vegetables that you can eat straight from the plant, like carrots, are always a hit with kids as harvesting food is one of the best things about growing your own. One way to persuade children to eat vegetables is to get them to grow their own. If you plant vegetables they
Vegetables grown from seeds
already like then you are on to a winner. The staples of the vegetable plot in a children’s garden are courgettes and carrots – while easy fruits include tomatoes, strawberries and raspberries. Help your children to understand which part of the plant they are eating, how that plant grows and why vegetables only grow at certain times of year. These are really important life skills which your child will never forget. Whilst waiting for your vegetables to grow you could buy a soft toy vegetable for your child to play with, to keep their enthusiasm levels high.
