Culture Vulture Southport has a great reputation for culture with a wide range of theatres, art galleries, museums and parks and gardens. Set in a beautifully restored grade II listed building, The Atkinson is one of Southport’s newest attractions. This multi-art form venue offers a cultural pick ‘n’ mix of dance, drama, fine art, history and music – perfect for adding some variety to your trip. The Atkinson is also home to a unique and hugely popular bakery, serving all sorts of great and fresh treats for visitors. The Atkinson Museum shows the history of the Sefton coastline from Neolithic footprints found on Formby beach to the blitz raids on Bootle during World War II. The museum is also home to the Goodison Egyptology Collection which had previously not been on display for 40 years prior to The Atkinson exhibition. And for something that’s truly unique, pay a visit to Southport’s British Lawnmower Museum on Shakespeare Street, home to over 300 exhibits including some of the fastest and oldest models in the world – some from the rich and famous, including Prince Charles and Lily Savage!

Southport Events The event season swings into town in May when the Southport Festival brings music, art, poetry and much more to the town. The beginning of June sees the return of the Southport Food & Drink Festival which is held on Victoria Park and just a few minutes walk away from Lord Street. It’s ‘eyes to the skies’ in July when the Southport Air Show thrills spectators who travel from all over the globe to witness some amazing aerial displays In August The Southport Flower Show has much more on offer than just flowers, with an events arena, show gardens, food courts and much, much more. October’s skies come alive with glorious colour and energy when the British Musical Fireworks Championship takes place over three nights. The clue’s in the name though, because the competition isn’t just visual – all displays are choreographed to music! But that’s not the end of the fun and if you’re up for a laugh in October, the Southport Comedy Festival is bound to raise a chuckle – but beware because close on its heels is the Southport Halloween Festival with a great mix of ghostly activities and events for kids of all ages! And to round off a great year of events, there’s Christmas when Southport really comes into its own!

For regular visitors it’s no secret that Southport has some of the best shopping in the North West. Stunning architecture and wide, tree lined pavements make Lord Street one of Southport’s most famous landmarks with specialist shops and designer boutiques nestling amongst cafes and restaurants. Antique lovers will delight in Royal Arcade which is packed full of curiosities and Wayfarers Arcade with its fabulous glass domed roof and period decor is simply stunning. Chapel Street is fully pedestrianised so no need to worry about the traffic and the quaint pastel painted shops on Wesley Street have an almost village feel about them. Southport Market is only a few minutes walk from both Chapel Street and Lord Street. Chapel Street also holds an outdoor market every Tuesday & Wednesday and a Producers market the last Thursday of the month.
