Fantastic outdoor fun!

A school holiday scheme where young people try their hand at adventurous outdoor activities is set to re-open for the Summer holidays.

Rock & River is an outdoor pursuits centre where you learn to fire an arrow or make a raft, climb a 40 foot tower or kayak across a lake. Their School Holiday Scheme allows young people (around 8 years and up) to try 18 different activities, while parents are busy working - or enjoying a well deserved rest! John Wareing, Rock & River owner, says thousands of children have spent at least a few days of their holidays with them since the scheme began in 2009. “We have seen a huge increase in demand for more active things to do in the school holidays - and we’re really pleased to offer a service which children

10 GO14 017 rockfinal.indd and river.indd 1 123GO! 2014 10

truly benefit from and enjoy, while helping parents solve the problem of how to keep them fit and healthy when they are off school” Parents can drop children off from 8-9am and pick them up from 4-5pm. (Half days also available). Activities run every day of the school holidays and booking is essential. Rock and River also offer a pickup and drop-off shuttle service from 8 points across the region if the centre is too far from your morning run.

Over 60 years dedicated to making top quality Italian ice cream Rossi’s Ice Cream was started by Hector Rossi – a relative of Francis Rossi of Status Quo – back in 1950 and quickly became popular with locals and visitors from all over the country.

Hector made his fresh, vanilla ice cream daily. Rossi’s gained a reputation and soon people travelled from all over the North West to sample this delicious ice cream, making Rossi’s a landmark in Southport. The present owner, Dal, who has been in ice cream manufacturing for 50 years, took over in 1991 and, together with his wife and daughter, has driven the business forward now boasting 40 award-winning flavours, displaying 24 at a time. Dal said, “We don’t just make ice cream, we create it and we have taken Rossi’s secret recipe (including the famous pink and white) and enhanced it, but retained that home-made velvety texture that our customers know and love. “We pride ourselves in using the finest ingredients and we never cut corners. We sell real ice cream made by real artisans.” Rossi’s ice cream parlour and coffee shop in Nevill Street was totally refurbished in 2010 and the family has added more shops to its impressive portfolio by opening a new Rossi’s in Lord Street, refurbishing another in Scarisbrick Avenue with another new Rossi’s due in Southport soon. The coffee shop is now a bright and inviting place to sample the spectacular ice cream sundaes as well as the delicious home-made cakes, snacks and drinks. Dal personally oversees all the ice cream manufacture – which is still made in the factory in Nevill Street – and is continually adding new and improved flavours to the impressive 24 currently on offer. Rossi’s motto is simple – top quality ingredients makes top quality ice cream and good customer service together with close attention to detail ensures regulars and visitors return time-after-time.

Rossi’s ice cream… often licked but never beaten!

Lancashire’s

Best kept secret

Farmer Ted’s lies just outside Ormskirk and is one of Lancashire best kept secrets; it’s an amazing day out for adults and children of all ages. It’s fun, educational and full of so many different breeds of animals your spoilt for choice.

It’s just undergone an enormous facelift which includes doubling the size of its Play Barn and creating a huge indoor adventure zone. The new area has slides, balconies, electric tractor driving areas, a new food facility and a working waterwheel! This means whatever the weather Farmer Ted’s is always open! Mark Edwards is the man behind the farm and his vision, determinations and hard work has created a great local attraction. Mark said “We want everyone who comes to us to have the best experience we are able to provide, every year we try and add something else and the new extra-large adventure play-barn means we can have many more indoor events and not have to think about the British weather” 123GO! 123GO! 2014 final.indd 15

15 25/06/2014 16:45

Throughout the day you are invited to watch the animals being fed, ride in a tractor or barrel cart, watch birds of prey demonstrations, learn about snakes and lizards and if you’re brave enough you can hold them. You can bet on the sheep racing, that’s really good fun and its free and you win a small prize if your sheep comes first. There are animals to pet in the guinea pig village, a beautiful shire horse called Benjamin, donkey’s, llamas, piglets, reindeer, cows, ferret racing etc. You can visit the snakes and lizards and insects and watch Sophie the cow being milked. You can play on the outdoor climbing frames and rope slide, drive round the pedal Go Cart track or just sit restfully in the open air and eat your picnic. There is something going on every day and on many occasions they have special events and attractions, as well.

As the autumn draws in Farmer Ted’s slowly changes into the renowned Farmaggedon and becomes a creepy and eerie experience for Halloween. All the available indoor space is transformed into amazingly decorated rooms that you pass through and have the scariest time imaginable.. One member of staff told us “Working here is never boring, we look after the animals, drive the tractors and then become vampires and ghouls, its different everyday”. This Christmas, Mark is planning a spectacular Christmas extravaganza with a 50ft Tree, Santa in his workshop and an assortment of Christmas festivities. This attraction is open almost all year round and well worth a visit, and you don’t have to pay to park your car, that’s free. Farmer Ted’s Farm Park is at Flatmans Lane, Ormskirk L39 7HW. Learn to swim in 4 hours

Gail Rickett is making news having taught many non-swimmers to swim as far as a 1/4 mile in just a few hours.

Gail is running a new four day Learn to Swim Course where children like Timothy Waters have completed amazing distances; Timothy gained his 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke award starting as a non-swimmer. Gail’s secret is due to her special teaching methods, and over 20 years teaching experience. Gail has also been awarded by the Amateur Swimming Association for her ‘Dedication to Swimming’. There are different courses available: the VIP private 1 to 1 course which is available all year round, the group 8 day intensive courses in the summer and autumn holidays, and weekly classes. Ammie Hunt, a non swimmer attended the course and gained both her 300m breaststroke and 200m backstroke certificates; a few months later Ammie completed her one mile swim distance swim. Jodie Higham, only 4 years old, recently swam her one mile distance swim too. Call Gail 07449 135450 – www.swim-baby.co.uk

An unmissable year for Southport Pleasureland This is an unmissable year for Southport Pleasureland. The park opened with a beautiful new fairy-tale castle style entrance, set amidst approach pathways flanked by grassy banks and ornamental walls. Inside there are plenty of new rides, including big muscle thrill experiences and fun and exciting junior rides for the little ones. It’s still FREE entry, with rides from just £1 – and if you come early you can nab yourself some early bird ticket offers before 11am (from 10am) Firm favourites can still be found – it just wouldn’t be the same without the Wild Cat, Dodgems, Big Wheel and The Waltzers – but there’s plenty more you haven’t seen before. From outside the park walls you can get a hint of some of the bigger rides – the impressive OMG for example – not for the faint-hearted!

Rides from the Mad Mouse coaster, Ski Jump and Piranha Flume are all set amidst newly landscaped

24 123GO! 2014 final.indd 24

gardens and baskets brimming with floral colour, all with plenty of seating dotted about for groups of friends and families to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Tradition is still very much in evidence too with the spectacular twin decked carousel, Ghost Train and the park’s tilting chair swing as popular as ever. The Formula 1 Go Kart track will please budding Lewis Hamiltons while some of the smaller car and animal carousels scale things down a little for younger pilots! Add all of the things it just wouldn’t be the same without – from ice cream and candyfloss, to home cooked fish and chips or freshly prepared pizza or pasta bowls – and you’ve got a great family day out. And, throughout the summer, there are a number of events on in the park’s open air events arena. Keep an eye on our website to find out what’s coming up … www. southportpleasureland.com Find us on Facebook and Twitter. Open weekends, Bank Holidays and school holidays, weather permitting.

Chicken Mission: Danger in the Deep Dark Woods Jennifer Gray

This is hilarious, hen-sational new adventure series by the author of bestselling Atticus Claw. Young chicken Amy Cluckbucket dreams of escaping from Perrin’s farm to a life of chicken adventure. One day Amy receives a summons to the Kung Foo School for Poultry in Tibet where she learns she is to become part of an elite chicken squad whose mission is to defeat their evil predators. It sounds like a dream come true for Amy but she’s disappointed to find that fellow squad members, Ruth and Boo, don’t seem to want to make friends. Ruth is too busy inventing things and Boo has problems of her own. The chickens travel to Chicken HQ to meet their mentor, Professor Rooster. When their first mission flops it is Amy who persuades the others that they should stick together to restore Professor Rooster’s faith in them. Through a series of egg-citing adventures and hilarious mishaps the three young chickens learn the value of friendship and teamwork. But will they be ready for their biggest mission so far - to save the chicks of St Eggbert’s Primary School from the jaws of their mortal enemy, Thadeus E Fox?

A taste of inspiration Whether it’s a special occasion or a light lunchtime bite, there’s sure to be a restaurant in Southport that tantalises your taste buds.

The Southport Restaurateurs Association (SRA) is full of the town’s ‘cream of the crop’ eating establishments The SRA was founded in 2006 and now has 29 members all of whom are proud to offer a varied style of restaurant and cuisine for you to enjoy. SRA members serve everything from Italian to Indian and Japanese to Lebanese – not forgetting traditional British of course. All member restaurants are vetted before being allowed to join and have to make certain guarantees. One of which is that over 70% of the food served is produced freshly on site using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible – a real plus in this world of microwave chefs! All restaurants are locally owned and not part of chains, so you can also be sure of a friendly welcome from the owner and staff. The SRA produces an annual ‘Eating Out’ guide which is spit in to three sections; ‘Best of British’, ‘A Taste of Europe’ and ‘Around the World’. You can get your copy of this year’s Southport Restaurant Guide by calling 01704 533333 or visiting the Tourism Information Centre in The Atkinson on Lord Street. Or why not visit the ‘Eating & Drinking’ section of visitsouthport.com for more information on all of the restaurants in the association? 123GO! 123GO! 2014 final.indd 29

Back to school in Premier style I am Geoff Dermott and, born in Ormskirk, I am the third generation of my family to have lived and owned a business in the town.

I’m co-owner of Premier School and Sport, which was established twenty years ago and we specialise in providing badged school wear to many of the primary and secondary schools in the West Lancashire area. With our own in-house printing and embroidery facility we can consistently turn out quality products and meet shorts deadlines if required we also supply personalised work wear and corporate uniforms to businesses in the region, together with sports kits to Edge Hill University and to local sports teams and clubs. Whatever support you may need for school uniform we can help. Premier have been providing world class uniform to schools and parents for over 20 years. We are committed to supporting education’s changing landscape and responding to schools and parents needs. At Premier we understand that uniform creates your brand identity therefore we ensure our uniform ranges are of consistently the highest quality. I personally take on the role of helping schools develop a new school uniform range or just refresh the old; including free logo advice and design, a dedicated team to assist or manage uniform at parents evenings, your own online shop and provide customer care advice when you or your parents need it.

32 123GO! 2014 final.indd 32

We make school uniform easy to manage. Whether you want full management of school uniform, a no admin solution or something in the middle we have bespoke solutions for you. Our no admin solution offers you a dedicated website area where parents can order direct from us online. We ensure that your orders are delivered on time and, depending on your chosen service, can be per pupil to school or delivered direct to parents. To find out more simply call our head office in Ormskirk 01695 572252 and I will arrange a visit for a no obligation assessment of your requirements. We also still offer the traditional family sports shop service which is how it all began 30 years ago. We can supply team kits and equipment for all areas of school sports including trophies and engraving.

They are fanatical about quality and all their ice cream is made from locally sourced milk and cream and the Italian flavours are made with real fruit and fresh ingredients … all made on the premises to special recipes supplied by their award-winning flavour house. British Musical Fireworks Championship 3 – 5 OCTOBER 2014

This is must see event, one that you will never want to miss again. It is no ordinary firework display, this is a competition over three nights that see some of the best pyrotechnic companies battle it out to be the winner of the competition.

But what makes this so different to any other display? You will be taken on a journey like no other. The music and the theme set the scene as the fireworks tell the story, very literally taking your breath away. Last year the winner had a phantom of the opera scene with a theatre curtain of fireworks that opened to reveal the Phantoms face. The different companies work for months to design the show; they pour their heart and soul into their work. They are judged by industry experts on the synchronisation to music, mood and flow, variety and effects, choice of music, overall design and choreography. As it is the only UK competition to require complete synchronisation it is one of the most prestigious to win in the industry which means you get to witness 7 of the best displays! Tickets start from £5.23, weekend tickets are £15.68, and seated tickets start from £15.68 and can be purchased online at www.visitsouthport.com. This is not just an ordinary firework display; this is seven breathtaking, jaw dropping displays with only one winner! But will you be there to pick your winner?

Nick Brooks, Centre Manager at WWT Martin Mere said: “Become a nature explorer at Martin Mere this summer and take an exciting journey through the muddy meadow, wet woods and reedy ramble. “Everyone loves the sounds and energy associated with the Michael Rosen Bear Hunt story. Going on a Wild Walk at Martin Mere will create a similar memorable wetland experience.” The Wild Walk project at WWT Martin Mere is funded by the Lancashire Environmental Fund, a generous legacy from the late Mrs Magdalene Thistleton, Cargill PLC, Laila’s Fine Foods Ltd and The Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund.

Top tips for kids

These tips are aimed to help your kids eat well, move more and live longer. Whatever their weight, it’s important that children eat properly and do plenty of physical activity for a healthy body. If you ever have any concerns about your kids’ health or weight – please contact your GP.

• Sugar Swaps

Swapping sugary snacks and drinks for ones with lower sugar can really make a difference to kids’ calorie intake. It’s better for their teeth too; here’s an idea of what to swap: • Swap to water semi-skimmed milk (children under 2 need full-fat milk) or dilute fresh fruit juice instead of drinks like cola or squash.

• Meal Time

We all want our children to grow up to be happy, healthy adults. Here are eight fun, free and easy ways to get your kids happy, healthy and feeling great.

• Me size meals

Even though kids are growing it’s important to make sure they get just the right amount of food for their age. So here are a few tips to make sure they’re getting the right sized portions. • Kids are smaller than adults so try not to give them the same amount of food as you. • It’s healthier to give a smaller portion to begin with and then they can ask for more if they are still hungry. Also try not to nag them to ‘eat it all up’ if they are full.

• Snack check

Many can be high in sugar, salt, fat and calories. So try and keep a careful eye on how many ‘unhealthy’ snacks kids are having. • Switch to snacks like fresh fruit, carrot sticks and unsalted nuts instead of sweets or biscuits. • Sometimes it’s kinder to say no. We all love to give kids what they want but try and find different ways to reward them – stickers, or a trip to the park.

It’s important to have regular, proper meals as kids may miss out on essential nutrients otherwise. • Try to organise your day around three regular mealtimes. • Eat together when you can. Kids copy parents, brothers, sisters and friends – when they see others happily eating lots of different, healthy foods, they are more likely to follow suit. • Breakfast is a great way to give kids the energy they need to give them a kick start by letting them have lower sugar cereals, fruit or toast instead of cereals with lots of sugar added to them.

54 123GO! 2014 final.indd 54

123GO! 25/06/2014 16:51

• Up and about

Kids’ bodies are designed to be active and moving around which will help them burn off energy. Not being active means our bodies don’t burn off enough fat leading to it storing up inside us. • ‘2 hours max’ - you may find it helpful to set a limit on how long your kids sit in front of the TV, computer or video game. • Get them running around after school. We tend to think kids get loads of exercise at school but they still need to be active out of school hours. • Get them up and about after eating. Moving around helps digestion and can be fun.

• 5 a day

It’s easier than you think to give your kids five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. • Frozen and canned count too. • A piece of fruit or vegetable can help cheer up a lunchbox- carrot sticks, baby tomatoes or a banana.

• Cut back fat

We all know too much is bad for us. Here are a few fat busting tips: • Grilling or baking food in the oven rather than frying it can cut the fat content by half. • Literally cut the fat. Trim off any fat you can see from meat before you cook it.

• 60 active minutes

Kids need to do at least 60 minutes of activity a day to burn off energy and help their muscles and bones grow strong. It doesn’t have to be in one go and it doesn’t have to be sport. • Get them off the bus and out of the car – why not walk it? • Clock up 60 minutes of active play each day after school and at the weekend – this includes running around, going to playgrounds - it’s all free. • Get them splashing about - a trip to the pool is a great way to get them moving and wear them out. 123GO! 123GO! 2014 final.indd 55

Mistaken as the ‘Special’, the only surviving Master Builder, the rather ordinary Emmet (Pratt) is selected to lead a group of figures on a mission to put a stop to Lord Business’s evil plan. Emmet is helped by wise wizard Vitruvius (Freeman), tough girl Wyldstyle (Banks) and DC superhero Batman (Arnett), but can he find something extraordinary within himself in order to save the world? The film also features the voices of Channing Tatum, Liam Neeson, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie and Jonah Hill.

Meet Kathryn and Graeme Foster carers in Sefton Kathryn Johnston, is a healthcare trainer from Bootle.

She and her husband Graeme have two birth children, aged 13 and 9, and have been fostering with Sefton Fostering Service for more than two years. • How long did it take to be approved as a foster carer? The process was very quick, it took around 6 months. I was very nervous when I made the first call but the person I spoke to was very supportive and helped put my mind at ease. • How did you find the approval process? Over the course of the six months we built a good relationship with our worker. Don’t be scared to

be honest and talk about any concerns as you won’t be judged. It was a good experience for us as a family and we actually found the assessment process very therapeutic. When we were deciding to foster, how it would affect our own children was a big consideration. We were put at ease as they were included in the process from the start and we were able to make the decision as a family. • What type of fostering do you do? Were approved for 0-18 and we have fostered children of all ages from babies to teenagers and we have also provided parent and child placements. At the moment we’re caring for a teenage girl. Some people think that fostering older children is more difficult but from my experience I’ve found that older children are more independent and demand less one to one attention. I also find it very satisfying knowing that you’re helping to give a young person a sense of security at a really crucial time in their life. So they can explore their options in a secure, supportive environment and help them make the right choices for their future. • What’s been the highlight so far? Watching a young person’s self confidence grow and see them blend and settle into your family then you really know you’ve had a breakthrough.

66 123GO! 2014 final.indd 66

• What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them? Children come with attitudes and behaviours that have been instilled over years and the process of undoing these behaviours doesn’t happen overnight, it can take a long time. If you’re having a bad day you need to look back and reflect on how far a child has come along since they came to live with you. • Do you feel supported? I feel we get great support. For a start I’ve got a good network of family and friends who all supported our decision to foster. We have our supervising social worker who we have regular contact with and there’s always someone from the fostering team at the end of the phone if we need a little bit of advice. There’s also a lot of training provided which gives you a great chance to meet other foster carers and share learning. • What would you say to someone who was thinking of becoming a carer? Talk to people and find out more. Go to an information session. Get all your questions answered and then you can make an informed choice. Even if you start the process and then decide it’s not right for you, at least you are making that decision for the right reason. • How to find out more … There is a chance to meet current Sefton foster carers at an information event at The Vincent Hotel, Southport, September 23rd September at 6.30pm. Contact Sefton’s Fostering Service: freephone 0800 923 2777, www.seftonfostering.co.uk, Facebook.com/SeftonFostering or @seftonfostering on Twitter. 123GO! 25/06/2014 16:52
