Good Causes
This Focus on Good Causes supplement is all about connecting with others, helping people out and making a difference. Often getting involved with a good cause is synonymous with money aid. Well, that is always welcome of course but it is not the be all and end all. You do not need to be cash rich to make a huge difference in your own community. Furthermore, doing things to help those less fortunate has many positive effects on us. For example, fund raising can be a lot of fun and it can also be a marvellous way to channel your creativity and energies. Getting friends, family and work colleagues involved will strengthen your bonds and you can play an important part in bringing a community together, in a world where increasingly people are lonelier and feel more isolated. Focus on Good Causes is your first step in getting involved and making a real difference as we offer you different suggestions and causes that you may want to get involved with. We all have ones that we care deeply about and hopefully this latest Focus supplement will help point you in the right direction when it comes to offering your help and support.

Hospices ROLE Hospice care comes at a time when an illness is diagnosed as terminal and dignity, respect and the wishes of the person involved are all high priority factors. The role of a hospice and it's staff is difficult to define because it touches on emotional, social, practical and psychological needs. Furthermore, hospice care is often extended to those close to a patient, sometimes after the person has passed away. Hospices generally aim to be closer to a home than a hospital and what they do is of crucial importance. Often, funding is a problem and hospices rely on volunteers and outside help to continue their work.
as companions. Contact a hospice near you and find out what you can do to help them. You will only commit to the hours that are comfortable to you. Volunteering can be richly rewarding experience.

Children's Charities ROLE Not every child is born with advantages in life and there are various organisations who cater for children and their problems in the UK. They tackle child poverty, health and disabilities, abuse and vulnerability. For many of us, children's emotional and well being issues are paramount and there are many ways you can help.
WHAT CAN I DO? Most children's charities have a number of campaigns at any one time and rely on you to join them and be heard. From children with parents in prison or sexual abuse, end of poverty and domestic violence, there are unfortunately lots of ways children get a tough deal. You can help by adding your voice to a campaign and keep being involved so as to make a difference.

Animal Charities ROLE It seems that animals in general are having a hard time more than ever and the people who run groups, sanctuaries and rescue centres really do have their work cut out. A lack of funding means that the very costly business of saving an animal and then re homing them has never been more difficult. If you love animals, it is worth remembering that doing one thing is better than not doing anything at all.
WHAT CAN I DO? If time is not on your side, there is often the option of donating a tin or two of pet food, to be given at your local supermarket (look for the special dump bins at checkouts) One charity believes it costs over £400 on average to re home ONE animal. So next time you are shopping just remember that an extra can of dog food will be a tangible addition to the valuable work people do at a local shelter. If you have a little more time, fostering an animal may be an option to consider. Kennels are often at full capacity and it is a daily struggle for the new arrivals to be homed. Some animals do not take to kennel life well either and fostering long or short term alleviates this problem, as well as providing the animal with

life-changing and the thought of knowing you helped save another person's life is an achievement to be cherished forever.
Saving people's lives on a regular basis can be challenging, but very rewarding. This is what its like for search and rescue teams, who work, in often dangerous conditions, rapidly and effectively to provide 24-hour care to those in danger on land or at sea. Charities who assist those in danger rely on funding from the public and cannot carry out their vital services without the money raised by volunteers like you.

WHAT CAN I DO? The donations from the public, and you at home help to fund the important equipment for saving lives daily, but volunteering to be one of the crew members can help make a huge difference. Just an hour of your time can help those at risk, and make an extraordinary change for charities specialising in this area. If you aren't able to get involved physically, you can help out in many other ways such as organising events within your community or helping out with life saving first aid courses. Homeless Charities ROLE Homelessness and poverty are two of the biggest issues affecting the UK. Around 6,500 people slept rough on the streets of London in 2014, and homelessness affects many different aspects of life. Where will my next meal come from? Where will I sleep tonight are thankfully, questions the majority of us need never ask, but these are daily issues faced by those who are homeless. Charities and food-banks work tirelessly to assist and create a brighter future for those who are without a home, often hoping to provide more than just a temporary solution. Along with this, many of these charities also help to get those unemployed, training and ultimately employment.

WHAT CAN I DO? Food Banks are always in need of help. Donations and food collections take place regularly at local supermarkets, churches and schools. If you are wanting to help further, you could even start your own collection at a church or building in the area. Making a difference doesn't require thousands – simply picking up an extra tin of soup on your weekly shops is another mouth fed. Continuing from this, other ways to play your part include fund-raising (for ideas on this visit www.

HEALTH CHARITIES
It can be argued that these charities focus hit the biggest common denominators for most of us. Cancer, dementia, strokes, and heart disease are too often conditions that involve us either directly or through a loved one or close friend. Dementia alone will affect one in three of us and cancer kills more than 440 people in the UK DAILY. So no wonder we so often choose to give or help these kinds of charity.

WHAT CAN I DO? Because these are probably the best known charities around, they often arrange mass events on a national scale in an effort to not only raise money but strengthen general awareness. Whatever cause is closest to you there will be something for you to get involved with. Walks, runs, dressing up.... there is plenty to do! All these charities have great websites and information for you to get involved. Take part and help make a difference for your chosen charity.
