Masters Wrap Up Masters

Matty White here with my look back at the Masters Glass Event from Las Vegas winter CHAMPS Show.

This was the CHAMPS Glass Games Masters Final, the show everyone works for years to get into. The Superbowl of glassblowing and the world cup of glass all rolled up into one epic event. It took one year... 4 Major cities and 4 glasstastic events to narrow down the field of 1000’s to just 40 glass blowers. They all showed up to CHAMPS Winter Las Vegas show with their eye on the prize… Over $60,000 in cash as well as a few thousand more in prizes with one 1st place winner taking home over $15,000 in cash and prizes. The reality is the glass blowers would do it for the bragging rights and the love of creating glass art. These guys and gals really put all their heart into it and you can see it in there work.

It takes a lot not only from the artists but from the crew and staff that hustle all year long to make sure it goes off without a hitch! So first, I want to thank my crew on this show, like my assistant Nick, Hugh Salkind, Lonnie, Karl Taylor (Grimm), Jeremiah Kern from Hand of Man, Mark Black, Carl our local handyman and even artists like HAMM, just to name a few, that really make it happen. Without these guys hard work and dedication to the the arts we would definitely have a much harder time making this work. Once all the hard work was done and the glassblowing stages were set to go, it was time to make magic happen!

When the buyers started streaming in and the torches lit up, you could feel the tension start to burn off. Everyone started right in on their pieces, it was really awesome to see. Prep and premade parts started flowing into the kilns. Continues On Page 22

Masters Wrap Up by Matt White | Photos by Sly Vegas Bill Burroughs was definitely someone to watch he seemed calm and collected with a determined attitude.

He is the type glass blower the public might not see coming. As I looked around I had a story or had seen a piece from each one of these artists that said in my head, “they could win.” Artist like Dina from Solfire glass who’s sculpting of figures is so on point or even the up and comers like Becca Feathers and Byron Keirnan these artists could potentially get in for the win.

Looking around the glass games arena, it was a mixture of old school and new school from OG’s like Cameron Tower, Mako and Shaggy to newer artists like Patrick McDougal from Subliminal glass, Flame Princess, ErkDeJerk and Gnarly Harley. It was an incredibly large field full of talent hailing from all over the country.

Day 1 went smooth as silk, no real big issues came about and everyone seemed thrilled going into the next day of competition. Day 2 got started with the most unusual occurrence, a fire broke out… luckily for us, it was NOT in the Glass Games Arena. Some idiot did some sorta something stupid and somehow lit a booth in the back corner ablaze. This caused a total evacuation of the building and a halt to the glass games. It took only 1 hour to get the all clear to start back up. What a sight to see when 5000+ attendees are outside the convention center. Once the Fire was extinguished and the room cleared of smoke everyone was given the all clear to re-enter.

The CHAMPS staff, as well as convention center staff, handled this like pros!

I saw some really massive pieces go into the kilns, a spaceship, Trump holding the severed head of Lady Liberty, a UV reactive ray gun and much more. Each artist had made their statement. Almost everyone got a finished piece in the kiln before heading home for one last night before...Judgement Day!

The third day saw the pieces come out of the kiln and get placed for everyone to see. An all-star panel of judges were present and ready to get judgemental. The Judges, Cowboy, Coyle, Bob Snodgrass, Will Menzies and Last Years winner and inductee to the Hall of Flame Hendy. These guys know more about glass and how it is made than you could ever imagine, most likely they have forgotten more than you know. After hours of talking with the artists about their Statement and piece, they began tallying the scores. To be fair the judges use a number system to rate each artists piece. When the numbers are tabulated, the winners are revealed. In the Masters Finals, there are 8 places as well as Artist Choice and Peoples Choice.

The numbers were so close over 50% were within a couple points of each other and one of the slimmest margins ever at the top.

Masters Wrap Up by Matt White | Photos by Sly Vegas and Dankman Photography In the end, everyone’s favorite 2nd place winner, Josh McDaniels AKA McMilleman, was the 1st place winner.

He really outdid himself by making himself. I know that sounds odd but it is true! Josh made a piece he called “To see the sacred in others, we have to see the sacred in ourselves.” It was a great LSD inspired piece, conceived on a deep and meaningful spiritual journey which he took part in prior to the games to help guide him. It used his signature murrini of his face and a murrini of the shirt he would wear on Judgement day. The piece was built right and really impressed the Judges. Behind him in 2nd Place was a relative newcomer to the Games BFF Becca feathers made a tower of her signature critter that all worked together representing her parents pushing her journey forward in the US, was perfectly executed and screamed of her originality. In third place was one of the most aggressive and magical pieces, it, in fact, won 2 Awards, 3rd place and Artists Choice with his huge Skeletal Dragon. The Top 3 were really all nearly perfect.

Behind them was a slew of talented artists with great talent. 4th Place went to Chiaih Sullivan, 5th Place was Jon Fischbach, 6th Place was Byron Keirnan, 7th Place and People's Choice was awarded to Jason Hedman of Hedmans Headies and rounding out the winners was Ryan Hoffman of Huffy Glass.

THE BIGGEST SHOW EVER! WOW, just wow, I mean did you see the crowds at this event? When I predicted it would be the biggest show ever in the last issue, I didn’t expect it to be that big and that busy! From the moment I walked in, I was struck right in the face with the pure massiveness of the venue. I arrived early with the great crew of CHAMPS, and man that place is huge when it is empty, I have stood on the goal line in a number of NFL Stadiums, and this felt bigger. In fact, if you didn’t know, 250,000 square feet is equal to over 4 football fields.

The temperatures may have been cold in Las Vegas but the buying at the convention center was not! From the moment the doors opened you could tell it was going to be a special show, the buyers were here and they were in the mood to buy. As store buyers streamed in they were treated to some of the best companies in the world. This year's Sponsors and Vendors went all out.

The vendors came with bigger than life booths.

Futurola featured a TV screen you could see from space (maybe… I have never been to space so I’m just guessing!) There were also a couple new sponsor booths that went big and awesome! Ghost Vape crossed the pond from the UK to join us with their country home cottage booth with chill out area for buyers. Cosmic Fog was there with one of the biggest 2 story booths we have ever seen at CHAMPS. The great crew at Famous Brands invited actors Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, (best known as Jay and Silent Bob) to the show for a half-day of meet and greet with photo ops. I saw the 420 Comic Jeffrey Peterson wandering around as well as UFC Fighter and CHAMPS regular Nick Diaz as well as Pony Boy from cannabis activist band, Los Marijuanos. Overall I would say the vendors went out of their way to make the buying experience exciting for the shops that attended.

at CHAMPS

The two glass blowing arenas were bustling with activity and crowds of buyers watching their favorite artists. This years theme was, “Make a Statement”, and boy did some of the artists make one! There were a few standout statements, such as Jon Fischbach's piece, which featured a glass POTUS Trump with a nuclear cloud emanating from his head while holding the decapitated head of Lady Liberty displayed in an old console TV. It was truly speaking to the current state of affairs of our great nation. Another great piece that spoke to me was the Phoenix inspired piece by Terry Sharp, those of you that don’t know Terry, he was involved in an accident in his studio that burned him pretty bad over a large portion of his body, this competition was him fighting back and like the Phoenix rising from the flames… literally. In the end, only one person gets the right to say that they are the top glassblower in the country. This year the winner was Josh McMilleman with his self-portrait piece entitled, “To see the sacred in others, we have to see the sacred in ourselves.” Josh took the challenge that Glass Games Director Matty White and the team laid out and truly found a statement that was universal to us all. I was very impressed with his use of murrine alongside the sculpting talent it took to achieve his final piece. The murrine was a very good likeness of himself and unbeknownst the onlookers the first two days was the fact that the murrine on his piece’s shirt matched the shirt he was wearing on judgment day! One of the best moments was during the closing ceremonies when CHAMPS Owners Jeff and Peter announced they would be giving all the contestants that did not win or place $250!

As the show ended and the hustle to break down began, I could feel the relief in the minds and body of everyone, as if the whole community made a slight sigh, glad to be done yet sad it had to end. Kinda like in Star Wars, When Ben Kenobi says, �I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced..."It had been an incredibly long hard week of trade-show days and networking nights. Vendors were rewarded with record breaking sales and store buyers got the best deals of the year and plenty of free swag!

See you all in May for our show in Atlantic City! Rumor has it the big-wigs at CHAMPS Trade Show will be handing out real live CASH to everyone‌ Like for real, I heard that all pre-registered buyers will receive $20-$100 dollars in cold hard CASH just for attending the show!

PLEASE, educate people to roll with a tip, you will have a way better smoking experience and you get rid of the ever dreaded, “ROACH”

Many people celebrate by gift giving on 4/20 like a holiday or birthday. Most smoke shops have big sales on 4/20, a good tip for holiday sales is to go in the week before and tell everyone what will be on sale, then if you want to increase sales driving to 4/20 give em the early discount to seal the deal while they are already there. It will usually work!

Ask your best vendors to sponsor your store event, many have plans for this and will send you posters, stickers, and free merch to give away.

Involve your local area! I like to find a couple good local food places preferably walking distance to the shop, make a deal with them to serve their food and post their information up for them. Cross promotions like these are invaluable, plus, everyone likes free food!

Make it look like something is going on, invite a few friends to bring their fancy HotRods down, put up flags and banners, have a local band play out front of your store… if your store doesn’t look like anything is going on how would you expect someone driving by too know your event is happening?

I have worked for some retail giants in my life and there is one universal thing that all good retailers follow, don’t get married to your inventory, or even engaged, most item’s, (excluding collectible art) if it sits on your shelf longer than six months mark it down to cost so you can replace it with something that sells faster! Your ROI will improve greatly over the long haul.

Also, remember donating old inventory to thrift stores is a write off as a donation to charity, old clothing, interior decorations and the like are all accepted.

Depending on what POS system you use and how the store is set up, some stores choose to have an inside sales competition. Get the sales team selling more to beat each other out of a special bonus award, cash or merch is something a lot of shop employees can use.
