Aida Cuevas Aida Cuevas sings traditional Mexican songs as only the very best can: with grace, charisma, and fiery passion. With a 42-year career and 39 album releases to her credit, Cuevas, dubbed “The Queen of Mariachi,” is an esteemed figure in Mexico, beloved for her unwavering devotion to traditional mariachi music and for her mastery of its demanding vocal forms. In 2018, she won a Grammy for “Best Regional Mexican Music Album” for her recording Arrieros Somos (Versiones Acústicas). The album is a collection of acoustic versions of Mexican classics by renowned composer Cuco Sánchez. Cuevas also previously won a Latin Grammy for “Best Tango Album” for her 2010 release De Corazón a Corazón…Mariachi Tango, and has been nominated a total of seven times in the “Best Mariachi/Ranchero Album” category at the Latin Grammys. Aida Cuevas joins us this evening with her illustrious band Mariachi Juvenil Tecalitlán to pay tribute to the dazzling music of late singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel—Cuevas’s personal mentor and Mexico’s highest-selling recording artist of all time. Cuevas’s latest release Totalmente Juan Gabriel Vol. II, is the second of five CD installments in which she pays tribute to the legendary artist. Gabriel produced two albums for Cuevas, 1983’s Aida Cuevas Canta a Juan Gabriel and 1985’s Exitos. The first volume of Totalmente Juan Gabriel was released in 2013. Cuevas is the only artist authorized by the Juan Gabriel estate to record and tour his music. Cuevas is a master of the mariachi art song performing a full range of mariachi numbers, including the falsetto heavyweight “El Pastor,” the iconic Juan Gabriel hits “Te Doy Las Gracias,” “Te Vas a Quedar Con Las Ganas” and “Quizás Mañana,” as well as new songs from Totalmente Juan Gabriel Vol. II, including “Gracias Por Todo,” “Cada Vez, Cada Vez,” and “Buscando el Séptimo Amor.” Cuevas also performs many ranchera classics such as “Traición a Juan,” and the José Alfredo Jiménez compositions “Me Equivoque Contigo” and “No Me Amenaces.”

“Aida Cuevas is Mexico’s most important female voice celebrating a long lasting career, leaving a remarkable imprint in the history of Mexican music.” – Broadway World

Fiesta on the Plaza In celebration of the Chan Centre’s 2018/19 season opening concert, we’re pleased to host a mini fiesta on the plaza just outside the front doors of the Chan Centre. Join us in advance of the Aida Cuevas concert for a mouth-watering Veracruz-style treat provided by the Mexican food truck Marimba, and enjoy the spirited sounds of local ensemble Breaking Boundaries. Breaking Boundaries is a lively ensemble that embodies the passion and vitality of Latin music. Made up of gifted musicians with roots throughout Latin America, the group celebrates the power of music to bring people together. This performance will offer a contemporary instrumental perspective on various traditional genres within Mexican music including mariachi and ranchera. Led by Colombian accordionist John Gonzalez, the ensemble also features the talents of Marco Antonio (Mexico) on timbales, Eric Ramirez (Mexico) on congas, Joendris Estrada (Cuba) on trombone, and Alan Ruiz (Colombia) on bass. The Marimba food truck is known around Vancouver for its authentic and delicious Veracruz-style Mexican cuisine made from fresh, local ingredients. It can usually be found parked outside the Vancouver Art Gallery, but today has made the journey out to UBC to welcome Mexico’s “Queen of Mariachi” to Vancouver. 6
