“If it doesn’t say anything to me it’s impossible to sing. When you feel something with music, you are sending messages. And it doesn’t matter if you have a big voice, a powerful voice, a small voice. The most beautiful thing is when you know how to give the message, how to show the feelings, emotions of the music.” – Mariza (NJ, 2015)

Mariza
With her vibrant, soulful voice, and graceful, commanding presence, Mariza is the undisputed queen of the Portuguese art form, fado. In just over a decade, she has risen from a local phenomenon to one of the most widely acclaimed stars of the world music circuit. It all started in 2001 with her first album, Fado em Mim, which quickly led to a number of highly successful international engagements and ultimately earned her a BBC Radio 3 award for Best European Artist in the area of world music. In 2004, along with Carlos do Carmo, Mariza was appointed an Ambassador for the nomination of fado to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The following year, she received the Best Artist Award from the Amália Rodrigues Foundation, was appointed an Ambassador of Good Will by UNICEF, and released her third album, Transparente. In 2006, Sinfonietta earned her a GRAMMY nomination in the Latin Music category – the first ever earned by a Portuguese performer. In the same year, she would be granted the honour of Commander of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator by Portuguese President, Jorge Sampaio. In 2007, Mariza starred in Spanish director Carlos Saura’s acclaimed movie Fados, and was the subject of the BBC documentary Mariza and the History of Fado. The following year, she participated prominently in a documentary series by Portuguese public television dedicated to the history of fado, Trovas Antigas, Saudade Louca. With her 2010 album, Fado Tradicional, Mariza would reaffirm her connection with the most authentic tradition of classical fado by bringing a highly individual and contemporary approach to some of the most iconic composers of the genre. In the same year she was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French Government. Mariza won the Womex Artist Award in 2014, and released her Best Of album which combined her biggest hits with fan selected songs. Her latest album Mundo, meaning “world,” is an album that Mariza herself describes as “the most personal I’ve ever made.” Working with award-winning producer Javier Limón, the record was praised by Songlines as “stunning, shimmering” and “simply breathtaking.” This year, Mariza was the recipient of the Songlines Magazine Music Award for Best Artist, and was recognized by Executiva Magazine as one of the 20 most influential women in Portugal. Mundo has just been nominated for a 2017 Latin GRAMMY Award. No Portuguese artist since Amália Rodrigues has experienced such a triumphant international career, rave reviews from critics worldwide, and countless international awards and distinctions. Her acclaimed musical partners include: Jacques Morelenbaum and John Mauceri, José Merced and Miguel Poveda, Gilberto Gil and Ivan Lins, Lenny Kravitz and Sting, Cesária Évora and Tito Paris, Carlos do Carmo, and Rui Veloso. Her repertoire, while firmly rooted in classical and contemporary fado, has grown to include Cape Verdean mornas, rhythm and blues classics, and many other genres. Mariza has appeared on some of the most important stages in the world: Paris’ L’Olympia, the Frankfurt Opera, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Amsterdam’s Royal Theatre Carré, Barcelona’s Palau de la Música Catalana, the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, and Walt Disney Concert Hall.
“I’ve been everywhere and had so many amazing experiences, but this is
my world, with all its colours. I want people to come inside. I want them to know who I am.” – Mariza (Evening Standard, 2016)

José Manuel Neto José Manuel Neto is considered one of the masters of the Portuguese guitar, and has performed with the greatest figures in fado, including Carlos do Carmo, Misia, Camané, Cristina Branco, Argentina Santos, Antonio Zambujo and Mariza. José is a self-taught musician who began his career in the fado houses of Lisbon at the age of 15. In addition to his unparalled career as accompanist to fado’s most acclaimed singers, he has released a number of solo albums, including 2009’s O Som do Saudade, and his latest album, Tons de Lisboa. He was awarded Best Instrumentalist by the Amália Rodrigues Foundation in 2008.
YAMI Born Fernando Araújo, bass player YAMI traces his musical roots from Portugal to Africa and back again. His father left his small town life in Northern Portugal, boarded a ship bound for Angola, and soon found work on a coffee farm in Luanda. He married an African woman and had children. YAMI left Angola at age 4 when, following the Portuguese Colonial War, his father moved the family back to Portugal, settling in the suburbs of Lisbon. It was there that YAMI came to mix his magical and rhythmic memories of Angola with the deep, dramatic traditions of Portuguese fado. YAMI has released a number of solo albums in Portugal, connecting pan-African and Luso-American forms with Creole innovations, flavored with funk, reggae and rumba.

Remembering Bing Thom
On October 4, 2016, Chan Centre architect Bing Thom suffered a brain aneurysm while on a trip to Hong Kong and passed away at the age of 75. He was one of Canada’s most admired and accomplished architects. Chan Centre Co-Managing Director Cameron McGill shares these words:
“Bing Thom’s passing is a huge loss first and foremost for his family and friends, but also
for a much wider community including those of us here at UBC and across Vancouver whose lives have been touched by the beautiful, inspired spaces he worked his entire life to create. Bing was delighted every time he came to an event at the Chan Centre or had the opportunity to show the building to colleagues or prospective clients. His pride in what he was able to accomplish here in the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia was evident and extremely well deserved.
I had the pleasure of knowing Bing for over 20 years and he was truly a joy to work with. He has left us a tremendous legacy in the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, and throughout this entire building we see reflected Bing’s love of nature, his passion for and understanding of music and the arts, and of course his architectural brilliance. To describe him as a visionary in his field seems inadequate. He was, in my experience, always looking forward but was respectful of the past in his never ending effort to reimagine what architecture could and should be.
We shall miss him.
