Dianne Reeves The New York Times calls her “the most admired jazz diva since the heyday of Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday.” With critical acclaim like this, Dianne Reeves has become known the world over as a living legend. Her breathtaking vocal technique, improvisational prowess, and unique blending of jazz and R&B have earned her the love of critics and audiences alike. Reeves received the GRAMMY for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for three consecutive recordings—a first in any vocal category. Featured in George Clooney’s six-time Academy Award nominated Good Night, and Good Luck, Reeves won her fourth of five Best Jazz Vocal GRAMMYs for film’s soundtrack. Reeves has recorded and performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. She has also recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim, and was a featured soloist with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic. Reeves was the first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the first singer to ever perform at the famed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Reeves worked with legendary producer Arif Mardin (Norah Jones, Aretha Franklin) on A Little Moonlight, an intimate collection of standards featuring her touring trio. When Reeves’ holiday collection Christmas Time is Here was released, Ben Ratliff of The New York Times raved, “Ms. Reeves, a jazz singer of frequently astonishing skill, takes the assignment seriously; this is one of the best jazz Christmas CDs I’ve heard.” In recent years, Reeves has toured the world in a variety of contexts including a program entitled Sing the Truth, a musical celebration of Nina Simone which also featured Liz Wright and Angelique Kidjo. She performed at the White House on multiple occasions including President Obama’s State Dinner for the President of China as well as the Governors’ Ball. In 2015, Reeves was recognized by the Juilliard School with an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts at their 110th Commencement Ceremony in Lincoln Center, along with Suzanne Farrell, Nicholas Hytner, Murray Perahia, and Peter Sellars. Reeves’ latest release, Beautiful Life, won the 2015 GRAMMY for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Her first album in five years, Beautiful Life was produced by Terri Lyne Carrington and features Gregory Porter, Robert Glasper, Lalah Hathaway, and Esperanza Spalding. In January 2015, Reeves joined Paul Simon, James Taylor and Bobby McFerrin in a tribute to Michael Brecker at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Pre-show Talk with Nou Dadoun 7:15pm: Royal Bank Cinema, Chan Centre Nou Dadoun, host of Vancouver Co-op Radio’s A-Trane program, discusses the legacy of Dianne Reeves. Earlier in her career, Reeves paid tribute to legendary jazz vocalists like Carmen McRae, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan, and proved herself in the crucible of their strongest joys and challenges – The Great American Songbook. In the 21st century, Dianne Reeves has brought that jazz sensibility and passion to the music of her own experience and time, forging connections between gospel, African, Brazilian and soul to produce a personal jazz sound that comes from here and now.

UBC School of Music Fanfares The fanfare that was performed in the lobby prior to this concert (7:30pm and 7:45pm) was commissioned by the Chan Centre from UBC student composer Jeff Groh as part of an ongoing partnership with the UBC School of Music. He studies composition under Fred Stride at the UBC School of Music, and is pursuing an honours degree in plant biology in the Faculty of Science. In addition to writing music for his peers to perform, Jeff enjoys bird watching, gardening, and distance running. Aquilegia Love Dance “I named this piece in honour of the breeding systems of the flowering plant genus Aquilegia, known commonly as Columbine. Through millions of years of evolution, these flowers have diversified by specializing on specific pollinators, such as bees, hummingbirds, or hawk moths in order to successfully transfer pollen between flowers of the same species.” – Jeff Groh
