Community Update

Do you know what new businesses are coming to Chandler? What about redevelopment projects? And what’s going to be built in that empty lot off State Route 87?

In partnership with the City of Chandler’s Economic Development team, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce will be answering those questions and more at our City Bus Tour on Thursday, November 7th, from 8:00am to 12:00pm.

Guests will board a tour bus as myself and Micah Miranda, City of Chandler’s Economic Development Director, provide detailed updates on Chandler’s biggest upcoming projects. From the redevelopment of Downtown Chandler to an expansion of Chandler Fashion Center, if you want to be in the know, you cannot afford to miss this. Tickets are still available at ChandlerChamber.com.

After the tour, the Chandler Chamber team will be getting ready for one of our biggest events of the year: Chandler 100, a gala honoring the city’s largest employers on Thursday, November 21. Visit the wine garden, network, and sample some of Chandler’s best restaurants - all in a helicopter hangar.

Each guest will receive a complimentary copy of our official 2024 Chandler 100 book, where businesses are ranked by employee size. Registration is open now on ChandlerChamber.com.

Harnessing the Power of Artificial Intelligence to Grow Your Business and Career

Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept; it is a present-day reality that can significantly enhance business operations. For entrepreneurs and business professionals in Chandler, understanding and leveraging AI can be a game-changer. This article aims to introduce AI, explore its applications, and address the associated risks, including legal, ethical, and privacy concerns. Additionally, we will highlight local educational opportunities available for those interested in delving deeper into AI.

At its core, AI refers to software systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decisionmaking. For businesses, AI can streamline operations, improve customer service, and enhance marketing strategies.

At a recent Chandler Chamber Education & Workforce Roundtable, Jeanie Cole, Senior Manager of Workforce Strategies at Deloitte, highlighted these opportunities, as well as the need for a human-centric strategy which includes a focus on upskilling workers. Risks and Considerations

While AI offers numerous benefits, it is essential to be aware of the potential risks and challenges associated with its implementation. Andrea Marconi, a Director at Fennemore Craig, shared several considerations organizations should incorporate as they explore leveraging AI to grow their business.

AI systems can sometimes produce biased or unfair outcomes. It is crucial to ensure that AI tools are designed and used in a manner that promotes fairness and transparency. Additionally, businesses must adhere to legal guidelines governing AI use. AI often relies on large datasets, which may include personal information. Protecting customer privacy and complying with data protection laws is paramount to maintaining trust and avoiding legal repercussions.

For those interested in exploring AI further, local educational institutions offer a range of classes and programs. Tom Pearson, Dean of Workforce & Education at Chandler-Gilbert Community College highlighted CGCC’s AI efforts, which include certificates, an associate’s degree, and a bachelor’s degree in the future offerings. Whether you are seeking a short certificate course or a comprehensive program, educational opportunities can equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively implement AI in your business.

It’s Pow Wow Season in Arizona

Get out your ribbon skirts, the best turquoise you own, and your wallets and appetite because it is Pow Wow season in Arizona. A Pow Wow is a gathering of different tribal nations and local community members who gather to celebrate dance competitions, singing, drumming, socializing, crafts, arts and food. Traditional ceremonies and gatherings similar to Pow Wows existed prior to European settlement for religious, spiritual and other celebrations.

Current day Pow Wows originated in the Great Plains during a time of great instability and destruction on reservations in the 1800s. Tribal members gathered to honor the great traditions and customs of their ancestors so that traditions would not be destroyed. Modernly, a Pow Wow is all inclusive, involves intertribal members from across this great nation, and they are open to the general public.

When you arrive, expect to see large numbers of vendors selling their homemade arts and crafts, and food trucks selling only the best mutton stew, acorn soup and fry bread. Dance competitions categorized by dance style, age, and gender last from dusk to dawn and are filled with dancers are styled with the most elegant and beautiful traditional outfits that take upwards of years and generations of love to put together, while drum groups provide the beats and traditional singers bless your ears with their cultural songs.

While there is no formal etiquette for these events, try not to haggle with vendors over prices because they spend a lot of time and attention on making unique products for you. Some wake up early to forage in the local forest for the best choke cherries and others spend years weaving a special blanket.

Come celebrate with us at the following upcoming Pow Wows:

• SACNAS Intertribal Pow Wow at the Phoenix Convention Center 11/1

• Salt River Red Mountain Pow Wow at the Salt River Baseball field 11/4-11/5

• San Carlos Apache Tribal Veterans Pow Wow at the Apache Gold Casino 11/9-11/10

• Orme Dam Victory Days at Fort McDowell of Highway 87 11/18-19

• Veteran’s United Pow Wow in Lake Havasu 12/7-12/8

• Hoop Dance competition at the Heard Museum 2/15-2/16/2025

• Westwood Pow Wow at Westwood High in Mesa 3/28-3/29/2025

• ASU Pow Wow in April 2025

CCCF Leadership Class 40 unveils

AzCEND Legacy Project

The Chandler Chamber Foundation’s Leadership Class 40 revealed their highly anticipated Legacy Project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at AzCEND, a Chandler nonprofit supporting families and individuals in need. This project is the result of months of collaborative leadership experiences and community service efforts by the class.

“For 40 years, the Chandler Chamber Community Foundation has hosted our award-winning Leadership Institute, and I could not be prouder of this year’s Legacy Project,” said Terri Kimble, President & CEO of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. “AzCEND has been a strong partner for assisting our Chandler neighbors in need, so, by working with this local nonprofit, Class 40 has developed strong leadership skills that will only grow throughout our community.”

This year, Class 40 partnered with AzCEND, a Chandler-based nonprofit that has served the community for over 55 years. AzCEND offers a wide range of services, including food assistance, homelessness prevention, family resource centers, and senior programs, aimed at helping individuals move from crisis to stability.

The Legacy Project will enhance AzCEND’s capability to provide vital services to those in need, furthering their mission of transforming lives.

I’ve Come Full Circle

When I applied and was accepted to be part of the Chandler Leadership Institute’s Class 40, I only expected an emphasis on professional development and networking. I’ve been loving all of those things and in addition I now realized I’ve come full circle.

On the second Chandler Leadership Issue Day, our class had the opportunity to tour four nonprofits in Chandler, each offering essential services to the community. As we approached AZCEND, memories and emotions stirred within me—I’d been here before. I grew up just down the street, and suddenly, vivid flashbacks came to mind: standing in line with my pregnant mother and energetic brothers, waiting to leave with boxes of food and clothing for school.

I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful to live in a city that not only cares deeply for its community but also provides meaningful support to those in need. Working on this project has been a full-circle moment for me. A few days ago, as I watched the new parking area come to life, I couldn’t help but reflect. Families and individuals were receiving the same services my family and I relied on years ago and now I am fortunate enough to give back.

Thank you to the Chandler Chamber for bringing together an amazing group of individuals that care for their community and for giving me the opportunity to give back to the community that once gave so much to my family and I. The work AZCEND does is invaluable, it’s life changing and necessary so thank you for all that you do to make Chandler a united community and finally thank you to SRP for encouraging and supporting their employees to engage with the community.

Federal Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) Reporting Requirements

The Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) went into effect on January 1st, 2024 which aims to make it more difficult for bad actors to skirt the system or benefit from their ill-gotten gains through shell companies by creating a Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) reporting requirement. Beneficial owners will have to report the required information to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

The companies required to report are defined as “(1) a corporation, (2) an LLC, or (3) any other entity created by filing a document with the secretary of state or similar office under the law of a state or Indian Tribe. The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) outlines the requirements and exemptions on their website. The BOI reporting requirement applies to most businesses registered with the ACC.

Planning Defines our Community’s Vision

Employment, business development and housing continue to drive our success as one of Arizona’s most vibrant cities. Businesses are thriving in Chandler and our quality of life makes us a desirable place for residents to live and work.

Updating the 2016 General Plan will create a comprehensive vision for future development. It will serve as a roadmap for development and community priorities for the next decade, ensuring land use, transportation, parks and services align with this long-term vision. Voter ratification of the General Plan is scheduled for August 2026.

Housing is a pressing issue and a central part of this vision. Since January 2020, nearly 2,300 single-family homes and more than 3,000 multifamily units have been added in Chandler. An additional 121 single-family homes and 1,100 multi-family units are currently under construction.

Our proactive steps to address housing span a range of price points, from affordable housing to market-rate developments. One such effort is the expansion of the Infill Incentive Program, which covers areas north of Loop 202 and includes incentives for redeveloping underutilized Class C office spaces and retail areas.

This program provides financial tools, waives certain fees and expedites the building review process to encourage the redevelopment of existing properties. By offering flexibility in zoning, density bonuses and incentives for mixed-use projects, we are making it easier for developers to revitalize properties and bring much-needed housing and commercial spaces to key parts of our city.

Additionally, we are modernizing public housing, starting with the 157-unit Villas on McQueen development that is under construction. We are planning to redevelop two other public housing sites east of downtown. These projects will expand affordable housing options while preserving neighborhood quality.

In response to state legislation, we are conducting a comprehensive housing needs assessment to ensure diverse housing options meet the needs of our growing community. This multifaceted approach for affordable, workforce and market-rate needs will ensure we remain at the forefront of innovative housing strategies and the results will be integrated into the General Plan update.

As we move forward, input will be gathered from residents, businesses and stakeholders through an advisory committee, community forums and other methods. I encourage Chamber members to work with us to create a bright, sustainable future. Your voice is key to shaping Chandler’s future.

U.S. Department of Labor Announces Overtime Rules Changes

In April, the U.S. Department of Labor introduced a new federal overtime rule, bringing significant changes to wage and hour laws that began rolling out in July. Falling under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this rule raises the minimum salary threshold for employees exempt from overtime. Starting in July, the threshold for overtime-exempt workers rose to $43,888 annually, with another increase to $58,656 planned for January when the rule’s final phases are implemented.

In January, the exemption salary threshold will reach $1,128 per week, and the annual compensation threshold for “highly compensated” employees will rise to $151,164. Following the January adjustment, the rule mandates an automatic review every three years to align with inflation and overall wage growth, providing an adaptive structure that the previous rule did not allow for. These adjustments are estimated to impact roughly 4 million workers, many of whom will become eligible for overtime pay.

For businesses, particularly those with larger teams of salaried employees, these changes mean a potential increase in payroll costs and a need for careful budgeting and workforce planning. Employers will need to evaluate their current payroll structures and employee classifications, as the increased salary thresholds might necessitate reclassifying certain roles or adjusting salaries to maintain exempt statuses.

As this rule continues to roll out, the Department of Labor advises employers to remain compliant by staying informed about salary classifications, worker duties, and documentation processes.

How to Run an Effective “12 Days of Deals” for Small Business Season

Step One: Set Goals for Your Campaign

This is not a giveaway. For your 12 Days of Deals to have an impact on your bottom line, you should get clear about what you want to achieve with your campaign.

Step Two: Plan Your 12 Days of Deals Strategically

Create a day-by-day plan for your promotions. This is not something you want to do on the fly when you have time to post each day. Consistency is key to this type of campaign. You want to build excitement.

Step Three: Create a Promotional Calendar

Again, consistency is key. Develop a promotional calendar that outlines what deal will be offered each day.

Step Four: Promote the Campaign in Advance

Start spreading the word about your 12 Days of Deals campaign before it begins. Tell your chamber about it. Maybe they will include it in their newsletter, emails, or videos about Small Business Season.

Step Five: Keep It Visible

Use marketing channels to keep the campaign visible and accessible. You might choose to make the deals announcement every day at the same time. You can roll it out in a live announcement to build buzz and interact with your audience.

Step Six: Use a Sense of Urgency

While this isn’t a step in itself (thus the “”), it’s critical that with this type of promotion, it’s all about the ticking clock. The deal is only good for a limited time (establish that ahead of the promotion and communicate it with every deal that is announced).

Step Seven: Engage Your Audience

Run an interactive campaign to boost engagement. You can do this by offering an additional prize for one lucky customer who takes advantage of the daily deal.

Step Eight: Monitor and Learn

Track the success of each day’s deal to see what resonates most with your customers.

Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation celebrates 40 years of Gaming

In the early 1980s, after a 5th Circuit Court of Appeals decision eliminated legal obstacles, some tribes around the nation began offering bingo in order to generate revenue. This included the Seminole Tribe of Florida who opened a bingo hall in 1979, and the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin who followed suit shortly thereafter.

The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation was the first Arizona tribe to offer bingo, starting in 1982. In 1984, they opened Ba’Ja Bingo, the first bingo parlor in Arizona – on the site of the former Fort McDowell Casino – to create new jobs and generate much-needed revenue for the tribe. It was an enormous success right from the beginning. Over time, the facility was greatly expanded to accommodate slot machines, card tables, restaurants, and more.

The tribal council president at the time, Dr. Clinton M. Pattea, helped lead the way for the success of tribal gaming not just in Arizona but throughout the U.S. His vision for the future of tribal gaming continues to help guide planning and decision making today.

Cox Communications is the first internet provider to deliver multi-gig speeds to all customers in the Valley

Why it matters: Cox’s multi-gig speeds will be delivered through breakthrough enhancements to its existing fiber-powered network, without any digging or disruption to neighborhoods.

One big thing: The ability to deliver multi-gig download speeds everywhere is the result of Cox’s nearly $12B investment in network upgrades over the past 10 years (2014-2023) to deliver some of the most powerful communications and entertainment services.

Cox already delivers gig speeds to all customers in the Phoenix market today. Unlike other provider approaches that often limit high-speed internet to select neighborhoods or regions, Cox continues to offer its highest speeds to all subscribers, ensuring that every customer has access to cutting-edge technology and reliable connectivity.
