Site analysis Severe disconnection between two villages due to the city wall Learning Center Wall Painting Pathway

There is merely one spot, a tunnel, that connects two villages. Long and continuous old city wall separates and isolates two areas on the east and the west. City of Seoul, currently the capital of Reupublic of Korea and used to be the capital of Chosun Dynasty(1392-1910), has several remains from former history. While these historic remains enrich city contexts, they also collides with presents and effects the lives of people today. The old city wall is one of the legacies that Seoul still has. As much as having this legacy of history adds contextual diversity to the region, these conspicuous wall causes city textural, and geographical amputation. As the city expanded over time and the original functions of the city wall became invalid, the existence of the wall plays a role as a barrier rather than a absorbed context. Dongdaemun, meaning 'east gate', and the old city wall connected to the Dongdaemun has caused separation of the east and the west, east area named Ehwa, and the west area named Changshin. The problems with the disconnection leads to uneven distribution and unfair access to welfare facilities. Programs of leisure is densely concentrated on Ehaw-dong while Changshin-dong lacks in such facilities. Encouraging more connection between two areas will lead to alleviating cultural gap while each villages own story enriches the other.

Environment and Tectonics historical remains and architectural construction In Dongdaemun City Wall Park, former city wall from Choseon Dynasty is preserved. Partially reconstructed, this historical remain holds value as a historical asset. When connecting two opposite sides of the wall, how to deal with the existing old city wall is an important issue. Deconstructing it arouses a question whether the connection, yet convenient, is an appropriate action to take towards the historical remain. Currently, the old city wall is sitting on a retaining wall due to the drastic level decrease on the east side, Changshin-dong. Utilizing this retaining wall, former barrier and a context which isolates the village of Changshin from the other side can play a significant and beneficial role. Buildings being constructed under the old city wall take different construction method from ordinary building means. Rather than excavating the whole terrain for underground construction, tunnel constructing method can be used. A hole is bored to the existing contour, and supporting structures are put into the cavity to bolster the space. On the other hand, park side, the west side, can simply be constructed by excavating and rebuilding the former terrain. Due to the different condition of given environment, the west and the east sides of the building will create quite a different atmosphere, providing dynamic space and experiences for the user, and at the same time, even in the underground, the historical legacy of the past will present its existence.
