Commision Window Display For Federal Army & Navy Surplus Created by Chantelle Wood
Background Federal Army & Navy Surplus is located in Seattle, WA on 1st and Lenora. The retail store sells authentic items used in the military as well as new items. Products range from clothing, weaponry, medals, to cabinets. The storefront has an arcade style window in which the right window is kept the same year round.
Details The store put up a contest for individuals to submit their ideas for the window, in which the winner would be commissioned to put it together. The requirements stated that they wanted the window to be “Military Meets Fashion” and to use the items that are available in the store. In addition to that, the winner was allowed a $200 budget to buy other necessary items to complete it.
Submission Below is the sketch of the front window that I submitted for the contest.
Since this was a summer window I went with a patriotic theme, as it would work for 4th of July as well as stayed consistent with the theme of the store. Bandanas were a recurring motif for the summer trend so I use bandanas throughout.
For the background I made the American flag using bandanas of red and white. The bandanas were hung on strings across the back and folded in half to represent the stripe of the flag, while the back was covered in a white paper. In the upper left hand corner were the stars, which were white bandanas folded into squares on a string over a blue paper background. The store had five male mannequins to use in which I used three of them. All items used on the mannequins were found in the store. Below is the list of specific items used to create each outfits.
Mannequin Details: 1.
-Tee shirt with star -Light colored pants - Belt around wrist
2.
-Striped sailor shirt with a desert scarf -Blue pants with a utility belt -Side satchel
3.
-Cream long sleeve shirt -Green ammo vest -Cargo pants -Blue bandanna -Hat with star
Side Display To utilize the arcade style windows I decided to make the smaller section slightly different from the front display. This window featured more details that can be seen as customers walk through the doors Facing the street is a military cabinet with assorted drawers pulled and filled with smaller merchandise. On the side of the cabinet is a vintage field desk with merchandise placed on top.
Conclusion The bright colors in this window were wonderful for spring and were displayed through July due to the patriotic theme. All items in the window except for the paper were found in the store and the only additional funds needed would be for the paper. The display grabbed the passerby's attention and pull them into the store as well displaying the great products that the Federal Army & Navy Surplus has.
