What is a Chanticleer? A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina

system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

   The Sasser Cup

The Sasser Cup Trophy, named for former Big South Commissioner and former Coastal Carolina Director of Athletics Buddy Sasser, is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically based on an average points system. Points are awarded based on both regular-season and tournament finish in each of the League’s 18 championships, based on the number of teams participating in the regular-season and tournament, respectively. A school must be eligible to participate in a specific sport championship to receive Sasser Cup points in that sport. There is a weighted factor of 1.5 for those sports that only participate in regular-season play (football) or a tournament (cross country, track, golf), but not both. Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned. Coastal Carolina has won nine Sasser Cups, has never finished lower than fourth in the Sasser Cup standings and has finished either first or second each year since 1995-96. The Chanticleers finished second in the 2011-12 standings.

  Each October the Chanticleers raise money for breast cancer research. On Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, the Coastal Carolina University volleyball team dropped a tough five-set match to conference opponent WinthropUniversityduringtheChanticleersannualDIGPINKBreastCancerAwarenessRallyinKimbel Arena. More than 600 fans came out to the event. The Coastal volleyball team raised money for two weeks prior to the match with the proceeds going to the Side-Out Foundation and to Caring in Our Lifetime. The Side-Out Foundation was created in 2004 for collegiate volleyball players and coaches to work together to further breast cancer awareness. Caring in Our Lifetime is a local breast cancer organization that raises funds to provide assistance with medical expenses to those affected by breast cancer in Horry and Georgetown counties. The team placed pink shovels throughout the campus the week of the match and if any person found a shovel and brought it to the match they received a free T-shirt. The team also held a bake sale in the weeks prior to the match and had a silent auction that featured a number of items including the pink jerseys the team wore throughout the match.

    As the old adage goes, “It’s not how you start the season, but how you finish it,” and that could not be more true for the 2009 squad. The Chanticleers had a tough road, going 7-7 out of conference and 10-6 in the Big South to finish fourth in the league. However, the turning point in the season came on Senior Night after the team lost a disappointing match to Presbyterian. At the conclusion of the match, the team went into the locker room and talked about what needed to be changed and where they were going to go from there. After a lot of tears and frustration, the squad emerged as a new team with one goal--to win the Big South Tournament and go to the NCAA Tournament. Looking like a new team, Coastal faced its first test in the opening round of the Big South Tournament as it beat High Point 3-2 in a tough five-set match. The Chants played spoiler for the third time of the season, defeating regular season champion UNC Asheville in all three meetings of the season, including a 3-0 win in the Big South semifinals to advance to the tournament finals. In a rematch of the 2008 championship match, the squad defeated Liberty 3-1 to earn the school’s third Big South Tournament championship. Junior Chelsy Kimes was named Big South Tournament MVP after registering 50 kills in three matches, including 12 kills in one set against UNC Asheville. Kimes was also selected to the All-Tournament team along with junior Megan Bickford. Freshman Sierra Livesay was named Big South Freshman of the Year and senior Jill Nyhof earned Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row as well as being selected to the ESPN The Magazine Chelsy Kimes was named Big South Academic All-America Second Team.
