CHANTICLEER HEADLINES COASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY TO JOIN SUN BELT CONFERENCE IN 2016 Coastal Carolina University President David A. DeCenzo announced on Sept. 1, 2015 that the CCU Chanticleer athletic programs will join the Sun Belt Conference effective July 1, 2016.

DeCenzo explained that Sun Belt Conference representatives based their decision on the University’s achievements and merit. “Their review of Coastal Carolina University and ultimate vote are clear indications of the recognition of academic and athletic excellence that we have attained on our campus.

Joining the Sun Belt Conference will be transformative for our University as we enter this new phase of Coastal’s future.”

The Sun Belt Conference, headquartered in New Orleans, La., was established in 1976 and began sponsoring football in 2001 as a member of the FBS. In addition to football, the Sun Belt Conference sponsors baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball, men’s indoor track & field, women’s track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball.

The Sun Belt Conference has earned ties to seven bowl games since its football beginnings 15 years ago.

No football conference in history has ever boasted as many bowl relationships in its first two decades of existence. A worthy football team in the Sun Belt can be in the national championship picture, and the league is a permanent part of the “Group of Five” that will send its highest-rated champion to a premier bowl game.

CCU sports will begin competing in Sun Belt conference play as of July 1, 2016, with the exception of the football program, which will transition to its first year of full FBS status in 2018. During the transition, CCU will compete as a Sun Belt member in 2017 and have the opportunity to compete for the conference football championship, but will not be eligible to participate in the postseason.

Coastal Carolina becomes the 12th member of the Sun Belt Conference, joining Appalachian State University, Georgia State University, Georgia Southern University, Troy University, University of South Alabama, Arkansas State University, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, University of Louisiana at Monroe, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, University of Texas at Arlington and Texas State University.

CHANTICLEER HEADLINES COASTAL CAROLINA SET THE STANDARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

For 33 years - from its inclusion as an original member on Aug. 21, 1983, to its final days in 2016 - the Coastal Carolina University Department of Athletics set the bar for athletic excellence in the Big South Conference.

The following is a brief list of Coastal Carolina’s athletic accomplishments during its time in the Big South Conference.

• Coastal owns the second-most Sasser Cups in Big South history.

• Twice in its history Coastal has claimed the Cup four consecutive years, and won back-to-back Cups in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

• A Chanticleer team or individual has reached an NCAA championship every year since 1991, with the exception of 1994.

• Of Coastal’s 19 varsity sports, 15 have qualified for NCAA postseason play.

• Coastal’s Hall of Fame members constitute almost a third of the conference’s 61 total inductees.

• Of the Chanticleers enshrined, 15 are former student-athletes, three are former coaches and two are former adminstrators.

• Coastal had a conference-leading four members inducted into the inaugural class of 2003-04.

• The championships include regular season, tournament and individual titles.

• Baseball (28) and men’s soccer (24) lead the way, while football has won the championship in seven of its 13 years of competition.

• Also with double-figure championships are softball, men’s golf, women’s cross country, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and volleyball.

CHANTICLEER HEADLINES MEN’S BASKETBALL VISITS CUBA, ADVANCES TO CIT SEMIFINALS The Coastal Carolina men’s basketball team began the 2015-16 season with a historic trip to Cuba, and ended it with the program’s first-ever postseason victories as the Chants advanced to the final four of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.

Coastal wrapped the 2015-16 regular season with a 18-10, 12-6 record good for third in the Big South - and, despite suffering a tough 69-65 loss to Gardner-Webb in the opening round of the Big South tournament, accepted an invitation to make its first appearance in the CIT.

The team’s trip to Cuba lasted from Aug. 6-14, and included three games against the Cuban National Team. The Chants faced losses in all three games, but gained playing experience against the best athletes that Cuba had to offer.

The opening round saw Coastal defeat Mercer, 65-57, at the HTC Center to mark the first postseason victory in the program’s history. The Chants remained at home for their second round and quarterfinal wins over New Hampshire (71-62) and Grand Canyon (60-58), respectively, setting up a final four matchup against UC Irvine.

The team and coaches also conducted a pair of clinics in Havana and Mantazas for the youth of each city. The Coastal student-athletes ran UC Irvine took a 33-25 halftime lead and held on to close out the game, through several drills in the clinics while teaching kids the fundamentals 66-47. MEN’S TENNIS SWEEPS CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN HISTORIC SEASON

The team finished 10th in the Carolina Region in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s postseason rankings. NOAD SETS BIG SOUTH HOME RUN, RBI RECORDS Senior Morgan Noad of the Coastal Carolina softball team capped a fantastic four-year career in historic fashion in 2016, setting the school and Big South Conference career records for both homeruns (75) and RBI (217). Noad’s record-setting homerun, a two-run shot, came in an 8-4 win over Longwood at home on April 6.

As a senior, Noad led the nation in homeruns and ranked third in RBI to garner Big South Player of the Year and National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region honors. For her career, Noad was a three time All-Big South selection and was twice voted to the conference’s all-tournament team while serving as the Chants’ captain.

Academically, Noad boasts a 3.5 GPA with a major in biology and minor in chemistry. She was a Capital One Academic All-District selection in 2014, and has been a member of the Big South Presidential Honor Roll in each of her four years.

Coastal Carolina student-athletes returned to Pee Dee Elementary to once again deliver school supplie donated by the Coastal Carolina athletic department as part of its annual SAAC School Supply Drive.

All of Coastal Carolina’s athletic teams participated in the drive, donating all types of school supplies. Some of the items included crayons, pencils, pens, paper, erasers and backpacks.

The donation marked the sixth consecutive School Supply Drive that has assisted Pee Dee Elementary School, a Title I school in Horry County that services approximately 800 students.

Title I is the largest federal assistance program for the nation’s schools. The goal is to provide a high-quality education for every child, and help students who are furthest from meeting the standards the state has set for all children.

COASTAL ATHLETICS CONTINUES SUCCESSFUL ADOPT-A-CHANT CAMPAIGN

The Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics and its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee completed its sixth annual Adopt-A-Chant Campaign in December.

The goal of the campaign is to provide local children a happy holiday season by donating such items as toys, clothes and shoes to Toys for Tots and students at Pee Dee Elementary.

In all, Coastal Carolina was able to adopt 30 children and successfully spread holiday cheer. The 30 children submitted a Christmas wish list, and Coastal Carolina teams and athletic administration worked to gather toys, shoes and clothes to provide help for those who otherwise could not afford it.

Some of the toys gathered included bicycles, dolls, puzzles, books, games, toy cars and trucks, roller skates, footballs, basketballs, art supplies and video game systems.

The adopted Chants also received athletic apparel from some of their favorite teams, including the Chanticleers.

STUDENT ATHLETES PARTICIPATE IN CARING FOR KINDERGARTNERS

A total of 95 Chanticleer student-athletes went to 20 Horry County elementary schools in February to read “The Giving Tree” to local students as part of the United Way of Horry County Caring for Kindergartners program.

Cheerleaders, coaches and athletic administrators joined the student-athletes in reading the timeless classic to 95 kindergarten classes.

Upon completing the book, the young students were able to put the lessons they learned on display by drawing pictures and creating greeting cards to be distributed to elderly, homebound citizens throughout Horry County.

STUDENT-ATHLETE EXCELLENCE AWARDS The Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics honored its top athletic and academic performers of the 2015-16 season at the annual StudentAthlete Excellence Awards hosted by members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at the HTC Center.

Tristian Curtis (men’s basketball) was named the Presidential StudentAthlete of the Year, an honor presented to the singular Coastal Carolina student-athlete who displays extraordinary achievements in academics, community service and leadership.

Darbie Kelley (women’s soccer/3.92 GPA) was named Female ScholarAthlete of the Year while Brinson Corn (men’s track & field/3.82 GPA) was named Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Leah Hardeman (volleyball) and De’Angleo Henderson (football) were named Female and Male Athletes of the Year, respectively, for outstanding efforts in their fields of play.

Bobby Holmes (baseball) was named Male Newcomer of the Year, while Kayla Christian (women’s soccer) was crowned Female Newcomer of the Year.

Ellie Taylor (women’s soccer) was voted Comeback Athlete of the Year, having a productive 2015 season after facing numerous injuries the year before.

Miki Antzoulatos (women’s soccer), Tristian Curtis (men’s basketball), Lena Schaeffner (women’s golf) and Tyler Chadwick (baseball) garnered the National Strength and Conditioning Athletes of the Year awards for their dedication to strength and conditioning.

The men’s (3.38 GPA) and women’s (3.66 GPA) tennis teams recieved the Linda C. Vereen Academic Excellence Awards, given to the teams with the highest combined grade point average.

Andy Hendrick, Professor Emeritus Marketing and Resort Tourism, was named the Student-Athlete Faculty Member of the Year, as voted upon by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

SECOND AT BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP • Senior Letitia Saayman became the third Chanticleer runner in school history to be named an NCAA AllAmerican after placing 18th in a 254-runner field at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Ky. • Saayman was also named the NCAA Southeast Region Runner of the Year after becoming the first Chanticleer to win an individual title at a NCAA regional meet.

• A first-place finish at the Big South Championship earned Saayman her second career Big South Women’s Runner of the Year honor, and she was an All-Big South selection for the first time in her career.

• Overall, Saayman turned in five first-place finishes in eight races.

• Kyla van Graan and Aynslee van Graan jointed Saayman as All-Big South selections as the sisters finished third and fifth, respectively, at the Big South Championships.

13-3-4 (6-1-2) | SECOND NCAA TOURNAMENT SECOND ROUND • The 2015 season saw the Chanticleers returning to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive season and 13th time in program history.

• Coastal Carolina posted a first round victory at home against North Florida before ultimately falling to fifth-seeded North Carolina in the second round.

• After starting the season 7-0-1 with a trio of top-25 wins, the Chanticleers reached program-best national rankings of fourth by both the NSCAA and College Soccer News. The Chants spent the weeks of Sept. 29 and Oct. 6 ranked fourth in both poll before suffering its first loss of the season.

• Senior midfielder Colin Marz along with senior forward Tobenna Uzo were honored as Big South Conference first team selections. Junior midfielder Sergio Camargo and sophomores Louis Dargent (midfielder), Einar Einarsson (defender) and Elis Bjornsson (defender) were second team selections, while senior forward Bryce Follensbee and junior goalkeeper Fernando Pina were honorable mention selections. Freshmen Jair Espinoza (midfielder), Ryan Willoughby (midfielder) and Sindri Kristinsson (defender) picked up allfreshman team plaudits. In addition, Marz was named to the conference’s All-Academic Team for his work in the classroom.

9-3 (4-2) | SECOND NCAA DIVISION I FCS CHAMPIONSHIP • Ranked #1 in the NCAA Coaches poll for eight consecutive weeks during the 2016 campaign and ended the season ranked #16 in the media poll, #17 in the coaches. The Chanticleers have been ranked among the nation’s top 25 for 44 consecutive polls while ranking among the top five 28 times and among the top 10 in 37 of the last 38 ranking periods.

• Reached the NCAA FCS Playoff for the fourth consecutive year, being one of just team programs to reach the postseason in each of the last four seasons.

• Coastal Carolina became the first Big South program to start a season 7-0 three straight years.

• In its 13th season of football, the Chanticleers won their 100th game on Nov. 3 with a 55-0 win over Alabama A&M. Overall, CCUs all-time record stands at 104-52.

• De’Angleo Henderson et the NCAA FCS record by scoring at least one touchdown in 26 consecutive games and is just one shy of the NCAA Division I all-time record of 27, set by Virginia Tech’s Lee Suggs.

• Just a junior, De’Angleo Henderson set the CCU career marks for rushing yards, rushing attempts and rushing TDs while exiting the Big South third on the all-time rushing yards and rushing touchdowns lists.

In addition, Henderson set Big South records for career receptions (77) and receiving yards (731) by a running back.

• Alex Ross became the first player to be a three-time, first team All-Big South selection at quarterback as well as being the first football player in Big South history to be both a Player of the Year (Offensive in 2014) • Ross ended his career 20th in NCAA FCS history with a 151.85 career pass efficiency rating and 24th in NCAA FCS history with 11,482 yards of total offense. Ross set Big South all-time marks for total offense, TD responsibility (91) and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (19), while adding the following CCU career records: pass attempts (1,174), pass completions (760), passing yards (9,918), passing TDs (72) and pass completion percentage (.647).

• Ryan Granger set a CCU single-season record by making 16 field goals, including a CCU record 10 straight over a three-game span — one being a 30-yarder as time expired to win at Monmouth.

• Alex Ross (Atlanta Falcons) and Tyrell Blanks (Houston Texans) were invited to NFL rookie camps.

Coastal ultimately fell 3-1 to Creighton, but recorded the program’s first set win in an NCAA postseason match.

• Repeated as Big South tournament champions for the first time in program history, and became the first Coastal volleyball team to win the regular season and tournament championships in the same season.

• Was also the first Coastal team to go unbeaten in conference matches (14-0), and posted the program’s highest winning percentage (.833).

• Leah Hardeman became the first Chanticleer to be named All-Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, and was just the third student-athlete in Big South volleyball history to be voted the Player of the Year in consecutive seasons.

• A team-record of six Chanticleer student-athletes were voted All-Big South.

• Jozsef Forman was named the conference’s Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.

• Senior outside hitter Lian Bernett became just the Chanticleer in team history to surpass 1,000 kills, 1,000 digs and 100 aces for her career.

• Emma Kroger (pole vault) and Kyla van Graan (5,000m) led the Chants, taking the individual titles in their respective events. It was the first time during the season that van Graan participated in the 5,000m event.

• In all, Coastal Carolina placed in the top three in eight events at the conference championship.

21-12 (12-6) | THIRD • Competed in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). Advanced to the tournament’s semifinal round by winning the first three postseason tournament games in program history.

• Head coach Cliff Ellis notched his 700th career win as a Division I coach on Jan. 2 against rival Winthrop. Ellis ended the season as the third active winningest coach in Division I. • Junior Elijah Wilson scored his 1,000th career point on Nov. 28 with a second-half three-pointer against Campbell. Wilson finished the season with 1,375 career points, ranking 10th on the CCU all-time list.

• Senior Badou Diagne became Coastal’s 21st 1,000-point scorer with second-half three-pointer against Radford on Feb. 6. Diagne finished as CCU’s 20th all-time leading scorer (1,027), third-leading rebounder (789) and fourth-leading shot blocker (99).

• Senior Tristian Curtis, who was featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter for the emotional reunion with his mother on senior night, was named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Curtis turned in a career year, finishing the season shooting team-best 69.0 percent from the field.

• The Chanticleers won 21 games despite players missing a combined 40 games due to various injuries. Five of Coastal’s 13 20-plus win seasons have come under the direction of Ellis, including each of the last three seasons.

• Set the Coastal Carolina team single season 3-point field goals made record with 244.

SECOND • Had two student-athletes qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round as Aynslee van Grann represented Coastal in the 1500m and Amirah Al-Bayyinah made her second straight appearance in the triple jump.

Van Graan missed qualifying for the national championship by one spot, while Al-Bayyinah placed 42nd in her event.

• Placed second at the Big South Championships while turning in seven top-three finishes.

• Teka Simpson was crowned the individual champion in both the 100m and 200m sprints, and was named the Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet. Her 200m time of 23.29 was a personal best.

• The Chants took second place in the 4x100 Relay with the team of Teka Simpson, Anacia Hines, Karissa Lunn and Kelila Naules.

• Aynslee van Graan was named All-Big South with second-place finishes in the 1500m and 5000m races, and earned Big South Track Athlete of the Week honors on March 30.

• Bri Chiusano was a first team All-Big South selection for the third straight year after leading the nation’s active players in career bases stolen.

• Noad and Chiusano together won 148 games during their four-year Chanticleer careers.

• Taty Forbes was named the Big South Freshman of Year after closing the regular season ranked eighth in the nation with a .473 batting average. Forbes led the Big South in batting average as well as hits and runs scored.

NCAA COLLEGE WORLD SERIES NATIONAL CHAMPIONS • Coastal Carolina won the 2016 NCAA National Championship.

• CCU won 55 games, which was the best win total in the NCAA and tied a school record for wins in a season.

• The Chanticleers became the first team to win the championship in its debut CWS appearance since Minnesota in 1956 • Coastal Carolina is the second team in Super Regional era (since 1999) to make CWS & lead NCAA in homers in same year, joining Florida in 2012. The Chanticleers are the first team to lead the nation in homers and win the College World Series since LSU in 1997.

• With two wins the championship series versus Arizona to claim the title, Gilmore recorded his 1,100th career victory, which ranks 35th in the NCAA all-time Division I wins list. Gilmore is 1,100-540 overall (27th year) and 847-438 in his 21tst year at CCU. • The Chanticleers were 6-0 in elimination games during the 2016 NCAA baseball tournament and 5-0 in such games at the College World Series. CCU is the first school to win five elimination games in Omaha since Oregon State in 2006..

• Coastal was 11-2 in neutral site games and became the first team to sweep LSU at Alex Box Stadium in a NCAA Super Regional.

• Coastal posted a 24-4 record down the stretch and ended the regular season 12th in the RPI. The Chants faced the nation’s seventh-toughest non-conference schedule and were 19-12 in such games.

• In addition to leading the NCAA in wins, the Chanticleers led the nation in home runs (96) and runs scored (516) while ranking among the nation’s top 10 in walks drawn (4th, 342); hits (4th, 709); sacrifice bunts (4th, 78); double plays turned (5th, 66) and stolen bases (7th, 112).

• Andrew Beckwith earned the John D. Diesing, Sr. Award as College World Series’ Most Outstanding Player as he finished his CWS with a 3-0 record, two complete games and an 0.76 ERA in 23.2 innings (2 ER).

That’s tied for fifth-best ERA in CWS history among pitchers with a minimum of 18 innings.

• Andrew Beckwith improved to 15-1 and lower his season ERA to 1.85 with the victory in the CSW final.

The 15 wins not only was a CCU single-season record and led the nation, but are the most by any player nationally since TCU’s Matt Purke won 15 times in 2010. Beckwith’s 1.85 ERA ranked 15th nationally • Zach Remillard and G.K. Young tied for 4th nationally and tied a CCU single-season record with 99 hits.

Remillard also led the NCAA in total bases (177), ranked fifth in RBI (72) and eighth in home runs (19).

• Young additionally ranked third nationally in total bases (168), fifth in RBI (72) and 13th in home runs (18).

• Other Chants to finish high in the NCAA final statistics include Michael Paez (seventh in runs scored; 67) — Anthony Marks (17th in walks; 51) — Billy Cooke 17th in sac bunts; 14) • Other CCU single season records set include: Connor Owings, Zach Remillard, G.K. Young and Michael Paez playing in 73 games — G.K. Young with 294 at bats — Mike Morison with an opponent batting average of .169.

• Coastal was 14-1 on Sundays, including a win in the Super Regional final at LSU and a victory over #1 national seed Florida in the teams’ College World Series opener. The Chanticleers were additionally 21-1 when wearing its black jersey and 27-1 when wearing its all black hat. The lone loss on all three occasions was a seven-inning, 4-2 setback at Georgia Tech.
