CHANTICLEER HEADLINES Coastal Reaches New Heights in the Sun Belt Conference The Coastal Carolina University athletic programs, with the exception of the Chanticleer football team, completed their first season of competition in the Sun Belt Conference in 2016-17. Overall, the year proved to be a successful introduction of Coastal Carolina into its new conference. The conference released the final standings of the Vic Bubas Cup, the league’s annual all-sports trophy, in late May, with Coastal finishing tied for fourth place alongside Arkansas State with 102.5 points. The Chants did not finish far behind the top three teams of South Alabama (119), Texas State (118.5) and UTA (117).

The Chanticleer men’s soccer team captured Coastal Carolina’s first ever Sun Belt Championship.

The Chanticleer men’s soccer and volleyball teams each captured their respective conference tournament titles to advance to the NCAA postseason. It was the seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance for men’s soccer, and third straight for volleyball. Individually, Annie Bothma was the first-place finisher at the Sun Belt Championship in Dothan, Ala., and was named was the conference’s Runner of the Year before winning the NCAA Southeast Regional to advance to the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship. The Coastal Carolina baseball team finished the regular season with the Sun Belt’s highest conference record (22-7-1) to capture the top seed heading into the conference championship. The Chants’ College World Series defense unfortunately ended early, as weather shifted the tournament to single elimination and Coastal fell to Texas State in its opening game.

The Chanticleer volleyball team won the Sun Belt East Division and tournament titles.

Overall, Coastal had 32 student-athletes voted All-Sun Belt and seven student-athletes receive indivdual awards in their respective sports, including Bothma (WXC: Runner & Freshman of the Year), Leah Hardeman (VB: Player of the Year), Tahleia Bishop (VB: Newcomer of the Year), Rylie Cox (WTEN: Freshman of the Year), Malene Krolboll Hansen (WGOLF: Golfer of the Year), Billy Cooke (BASE: Player of the Year) and Cory Wood (BASE: Freshman of the Year).

Malene Krolboll Hansen was named the Sun Belt Women’s Golfer of the Year in addition to first team all-conference and all-tournament team honors

An additional eight Chanticleers were voted all-conference from women’s lacrosse, which competes as an associate member of the ASUN Conference. Head coach Kristen Selvage was also named the league’s Coach of the Year as she led the program to its most wins in a season with a 12-5 overall record, and an ASUN regular season title with a 9-1 conference record. Coastal has even more reason to hopeful of the 2017-18 academic year, as the Chanticleer football team begins its first season of competition in the Sun Belt Conference in the newly expanded Brooks Stadium.

Annie Bothma was the top individual finisher at both the Sun Belt Championship and NCAA Southeast Regional, and was named the Sun Belt Runner of the Year in cross country.

CHANTICLEER HEADLINES Men’s Soccer Captures Coastal’s First Sun Belt Championship The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team became the first Chanticleer program to win a Sun Belt championship with a 1-0 victory over Georgia State on Nov. 13 in Atlanta, Ga. The tournament championship followed a 7-6-3 (3-1-1 Sun Belt) regular season record that put the Chants atop the conference standings. Coastal advanced to its seventh straight NCAA Tournament, and made its 14th postseason appearance overall. The Chants downed former Big South rival Radford, 2-1, in the opening round at CCU Soccer Stadium, before falling 2-0 against a tough Wake Forest side in the second round. Six members of the team were voted All-Sun Belt, led by first-teamers Einar Einarsson and Frantzdy Pierrot. Martin Melchor, Elis Bjornsson, Braulio Linares-Ortiz and Ryan Reid were all named to the second team. Junior forward Frantzdy Pierrot led Coastal with 21 points on eight goals and five assists in 2016.

Volleyball Records First NCAA Tournament Win The Coastal Carolina volleyball team, making its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, finally broke through in 2016, downing James Madison in five sets in the opening round of the Chapel Hill regional to record its first NCAA postseason victory. The Chants’ historic season unfortunately ended the next day as they fell in four sets to host North Carolina in the tournament’s second round. The year featured another fantastic regular season for the team as Coastal went 24-4 overall (15-1 Sun Belt) to win the Sun Belt East Divsion title. The Chants then advanced to the Sun Belt Championship where they knocked off the No. 1 seed and defending conference champions, Arkansas State. It was the third straight conference championship for Coastal, and sixth overall.

Junior outside hitter Leah Hardeman was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year, her third straight conference POY award.

Junior outside hitter Leah Hardeman was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player at the conference tournament. Hardeman and senior Annayka Legros also garnered American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Region honors at the conclusion of the season. Additionally, senior Tahleia Bishop was voted the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year, and three Chants total were named All-Sun Belt.

CHANTICLEER HEADLINES Men’s Basketball Reaches College Basketball Invitational Final One year after recording the first three postseason wins in program history and reaching the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT), the Chanticleer men’s basketball team once again found itself in postseason contention in 2016-17 after accepting an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). The regular season saw the Chants finish with a 16-17 (10-8 Sun Belt) record to earn the eighth seed in the Sun Belt Championship. An 80-67 win over No. 9 South Alabama in the opening round was followed by a loss to top-seeded UTA in the second round, but it did not mark the end of the season for the Chants.

Senior guard Elijah Wilson in a CBI championship game in Laramie, Wyo.

Coastal played each of the first three rounds of the CBI at the HTC Center, and the home-court advantage allowed the Chants to cruise past Hampton (83-67), Loyola Maryland (73-63) and University of Illinois at Chicago (89-78) to set up a best-of-three championship series against Wyoming. The first game of the series was held in Conway, and the home-court advantage continued as Coastal opened with a 91-81 victory. The series then shifted to Laramie, Wyo., where the Cowboys rallied to claim the final two games and take the championship. Coastal finished the season 20-19 overall, and improved its all-time number of postseason wins to seven.

FACILITY ENHANCEMENTS Brooks Stadium On March 21, Coastal Carolina dignataries held an official groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the expansion of Brooks Stadium, which will consist of two phases. The first phase will boost the seating capacity to at least 15,000 prior to the Chants’ 2017 home opener on Sept. 2 by adding seats to the corners of the end zone nearest the field house, expanding the sections closest to the field twoard the scoreboard and expanding the upper deck on the east side to match the length of the lower deck. The second phase will give Brooks Stadium a capacity of at least 20,000, and includes adding luxury suites and an upper deck to the west side as well as additional features such as new entrances.

CCU Beach Volleyball Complex Coastal Carolina debuted its brand new beach volleyball complex April 14-15 as the Chanticleers hosted their first ever home beach volleyball matches on the University’s campus. The facility features five sand courts and ample room surrounding the courts for bleachers and extra seating, as well as tents for the teams, officials, trainers and staff. The two days of matches in April also included a DJ that played music throughout the event. Stetson, North Florida and Mercer were the three visiting teams that helped Coastal break in its new courts. The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team completed its second season of competition in 2017.

Stevens Tennis Complex On April 12, the Delan and Lynn Stevens Tennis Complex was officially dedicated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Stevenses made a generous donation to the University in support of the facility. Delan and Lynn graduated from Coastal in 1979 and 1981, respectively. He has been a member of the University’s board of trustees since 2015, while she served on the CCU Student Housing Foundation board from 2003 to 2015. The complex first opened on Jan. 31, 2015. It consists of 12 courts and is surrounded by bleachers and rocking chairs. COMMUNITY SERVICE Coastal Holds Flood, Hurricane Relief Drives A pair of natural disasters in the fall brought the Coastal Carolina community together to help those who had been affected most by flooding in Louisiana and Hurricane Matthew in South Carolina. In August, Louisiana suffered flooding that forced many from their homes and left property seriously damaged. Coastal held a relief drive to help Sun Belt brethren Louisiana Lafayette, collecting cleaning supplies, nonperishable food and even monetary donations. The Chanticleer family rallied once again in October to help those in their own backyard that had suffered damage when Hurricane Matthew hit the South Carolina coast. The Department of Athletics collected similar items from the previous drive in order to assists families in the recovery effort.

Coastal Teams With Churches Assisting People In addition to its annual Adopt-A-Chant campgain, the Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics lended an extra helping hand during the holiday season by pairing with Churches Assisting People. In late November, student-athletes, staff and coaches donated 50 Thanksgiving meals to the Conway community with the help of Churches Assisting People. Churches Assisting People was also instrumental in helping the Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics distribute supplies that were collected during the drive following Hurricane Matthew.

The Successful Adopt-A-Chant Campaign Continues The Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics and its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee completed its seventh annual Adopt-A-Chant campaign in December. The goal of the campaign is to provide local children a happy holiday season by donating such items as toys, clothes and shoes to Toys for Tots and students at Pee Dee Elementary. Just over 20 children submitted a Christmas wish list, and Coastal Carolina teams and athletic administration worked to gather items for those who otherwise could not afford it. The seventh year of the campaign was arguably one of the best. A collective 14 bikes, approximately 1,000 toys, clothes, shoes and stocking stuffers were donated and provided to 21 children.

SUPPORT & FAN ENGAGEMENT Attendance Figures Below is a look at how Coastal Carolina compared to other Sun Belt institutions in football, men’s basketball and baseball attendance. Coastal would have ranked second in percentage of football stadium capacity had it participated in the Sun Belt in 2016. In men’s basketball, Coastal was ninth in per-game attendance and sixth in total attendance. Only six Sun Belt schools published baseball attendance numbers, and Coastal was the clear leader in both total attendance and per-game attendance. • Coastal was 10-2, marking just the fourth 10-win season in school history. The 2016 class has tallied three of those four, 10-win seasons. • Coastal finished 18th in the final STATS FCS media poll, was ranked nationally in each of the weekly polls in 2016 and ends its FCS run by being among the nation’s top 25 in 59 consecutive ranking periods, including 37 weeks in the top 10 and 10 weeks as the nation’s #1 team. • Coastal Carolina went through the first of two transition years from NCAA Division I FCS to FBS. While the Chanticleers were not eligible for NCAA postseason and not in a conference, Coastal was determined to have won its fourth conference championship* and be an NCAA postseason team*. • Since Coastal was going through a transition, a committee – the Coastal Carolina Football Transition Committee – was formed. That committee consisted of a coach from an opposing team, media members – both locally and those covering other teams on the 2016 schedule, as well as sports information directors. The committee would vote on an all-conference team and decide what reasonably and most likely would have happened if Coastal were eligible for all FCS and conference recognition. The results of the committee are marked and explained in Coastal Carolina history with an asterisk to denote this one-year gap while properly acknowledging the contributions of this team and its players. • Coastal and Charleston Southern both finished with a 4-1 record against common opponents to give the teams a share of that conference championship*. • Coastal would have earned its fifth straight NCAA Division I Championship berth. While Coastal was not eligible for the postseason, the Chanticleers were included and ranked 11th in the official NCAA FCS Simple Rating System, which is a valuable tool in determining the 24-team NCAA FCS Championship field. That combined with its national ranking and the fact Coastal’s two losses were both by one point to top 10 FCS programs would make it reasonable to believe Coastal would have been among the NCAA field of 24. • Alex Scearce (first team), De’Angelo Henderson (second team) and Voghens Larrieux (third team) were named All-American. Scearce finished sixth in the Buck Buchanan Award (the top defensive player in the FCS) and Hendeson was a finalist for a second staright year for the FCS Offensive Player of the Year. • De’Angelo Henderson set an NCAA Division I record by scoring a touchdown in 35 consecutive games. • Joe Moglia was a Vince Lombardi Hall of Fame honoree. • De’Angelo Henderson was invited to the NFL Combine and was selected in the sixth round of the draft by the Denver Broncos.
