WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER?

The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time. COASTAL CAROLINA JOINS SUN BELT CONFERENCE Coastal Carolina University President David A. DeCenzo announced on Sept. 1 that the CCU Chanticleers athletic programs will join the Sun Belt Conference effective July 1, 2016. During a news conference at the HTC Student Convocation and Recreation Center, DeCenzo expressed his appreciation to the Sun Belt Conference. ”On behalf of all of us at Coastal Carolina University, I’m honored to accept the invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference,” announced DeCenzo. “I am grateful to Sun Belt Commissioner, Mr. Karl Benson, for his steadfast support of CCU, and to the Sun Belt presidents and chancellors, who honored CCU by selecting their 12th member school.” DeCenzo was joined by Commissioner Benson, CCU Chairman of the Board Wyatt Henderson, Athletic Committee Chairman Gene Spivey and Director of Athletics Matt Hogue. “This is a great day for the Sun Belt Conference as we are very proud to have Coastal Carolina University join our membership,” said Benson. “The Sun Belt is a growing conference with a bright future and Coastal Carolina makes a perfect fit as they too have seen a tremendous amount of growth and have all the tools necessary to move forward at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Under the leadership of President David A. DeCenzo and Athletics Director Matt Hogue, I expect the Chanticleers to be competitive in all Sun Belt sports and to represent the conference in a first-class manner on and off the field.” “The Sun Belt Conference has grown in strength today with the addition of Coastal Carolina University to its already thriving membership,” said Sun Belt Conference President and Texas State University President Denise M. Trauth. “CCU is a well-rounded public institution that is reaching new heights with its remarkable growth. On behalf of the Sun Belt Conference Presidents and Chancellors, we welcome the addition of Coastal Carolina to the Sun Belt Conference.” “What a remarkable day for Chanticleer Athletics and a testament to the decades of success by our student-athletes and programs,” stated Hogue. “NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) membership and the tradition of the Sun Belt Conference will present new opportunities for our athletics program to help showcase the tremendous impact being forged by our University. By this invitation, we have been recognized for our excellence on and off the field. All Chanticleers past and present I’m sure will take great pride in this historic announcement.” DeCenzo explained that Sun Belt Conference representatives based their decision on the University’s achievements and merit. “Their review of Coastal Carolina University and ultimate vote are clear indications of the recognition of academic and athletic excellence that we have attained on our campus. Joining the Sun Belt Conference will be transformative for our University as we enter this new phase of Coastal’s future.” “This is a historic moment for all Chanticleers,” explained Henderson. “The Sun Belt’s invitation is perfect timing and matches very well with the trajectory of our University. CCU will join a distinct group of peer institutions experiencing similar growth and success both on and off the field. We will be aligned with the nation’s top institutions.” “The move into FBS, which is the absolute highest level of collegiate competition, will increase the University’s visibility and brand recognition,” stated Spivey. “ It will change how CCU is followed. We’ll receive far greater media coverage, and our program will be promoted at a much higher level.” The Sun Belt Conference, headquartered in New Orleans, La., was established in 1976 and began sponsoring football in 2001 as a member of the FBS. In addition to football, the Sun Belt Conference sponsors baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball, men’s indoor track & field, women’s track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. The Sun Belt Conference has earned ties to seven bowl games since its football beginnings 15 years ago. No football conference in history has ever boasted as many bowl relationships in its first two decades of existence. A worthy football team in the Sun Belt can be in the national championship picture, and the league is a permanent part of the “Group of Five” that will send its highest-rated champion to a premier bowl game. CCU sports will begin competing in Sun Belt conference play as of July 1, 2016, with the exception of the football program, which will transition to its first year of full FBS status in 2018. During the transition, CCU will compete as a Sun Belt member in 2017 and have the opportunity to compete for the conference football championship, but will not be eligible to participate in the postseason. Coastal Carolina becomes the 12th member of the Sun Belt Conference, joining Appalachian State University, Georgia State University, Georgia Southern University, Troy University, University of South Alabama, Arkansas State University, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, University of Louisiana at Monroe, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, University of Texas at Arlington and Texas State University. DeCenzo emphasized that this move will not involve costs that fall on the backs of our students. He explained that joining the FBS brings a financial benefit that CCU doesn’t currently have at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level, including significant conference revenue sharing that can help offset the increased operating costs as an FBS program. Coastal Carolina was a founding member of the Big South Conference in 1983, and the league was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status for the 1986-87 academic year. Coastal Carolina added football for the 2003 season and has participated in the NCAA Division I FCS, formerly NCAA I-AA, since that time. Since becoming an NCAA Division I program, Coastal has won a total 165 Big South championships and was represented in 119 NCAA Championship events. Prior to its time as an NCAA Division I member, Coastal participated in NCAA Division II and the NAIA.

Head Coach | University of Charleston (W.Va.), 1995 Sixth season at Coastal Carolina | 45-47-7 Ninth season overall | 80-64-14

ogan is in his sixth year as Coastal Carolina’s head women’s soccer coach. For the second straight season, Hogan was named the Big South Coach of the Year for the 2015 season as he and the Chanticleers matched the programs progression from last season, after posting their best campaign in seven years. The Chanticleers finished in second place in the Big South during the regular season with a 7-2-1 record, an identical Big South finish to the 2014 campaign. After defeating UNC Asheville 5-0 in the Big South quarterfinal, for the second season Coastal advanced to the Big South semifinals but eventually fell in the semifinal match against Campbell, 2-0, to finish 12-7-1. The 12 victories provided the fourth straight double-digit win season and were also the most for Coastal since 2008. Under Hogan, freshman Kayla Christian become the fourth Chanticleer to garner the Big South Freshman of the Year award. Five other Coastal players collected all-conference honors. Hogan was named the Big South Coach of the Year in 2014 as he and the Chanticleers took more steps forward in the program’s progression. After tying for second place in the Big South during the regular season with a 7-2-1 record, its best finish since 2010, Coastal notched its first conference tournament win since 2008 with a 2-0 shutout of UNC Asheville, before falling in a tight 2-1 semifinal match against High Point to finish 11-8-2. Hogan became the third different Chanticleer leader to earn the conference’s top coaching honor. Senior forward Kacey Kelley also made history individually under Hogan, becoming the first Chant to earn NSCAA All-Region honors and the second to be named a Big South Player of the Year as she garnered the attacking award. Five other Coastal players collected allconference honors. As a team, CCU was second in the Big South during the regular season in fewest goals allowed, not surrendering more than one in any of the 11 conference games, while ranking third in goals scored. The Chanticleers also continued to excel against the league’s best, posting a 1-0 shutout of Liberty on Senior Day to mark the third straight season in

which Coastal has handed the league’s eventual regular-season champion its only conference defeat. In 2013, Hogan guided Coastal to a 108-2 record, giving the Chanticleers consecutive double-digit victory campaigns for the first time since 2008. The Chanticleers tied for fourth in the Big South, along the way ending Radford’s 19-game regular-season conference unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory on October 23. The squad also set a new CCU record with 11 shutouts in their 20 games, while allowing just 15 total goals to establish a new program mark for the second year in a row. Seven Chants earned All-Big South honors, including a total of four on the first and second team, tied for most in the conference. Prior to the start of the season, Hogan served as a member of the USYSA Region III Olympic Development staff during the summer. Coastal made a dramatic improvement under Hogan during his second season in 2012, notching eight more victories than the previous year. The Chanticleers

7

finished 10-9 overall and went 7-4 in Big South play, including a perfect 5-0 mark at home. The Chants decreased their goals allowed from 40 in 2011 to a thenschool-record 20 and posted eight shutouts, while surrendering the fewest shots of any Big South team. Hogan coached three Chants to All-Big South honors, including Fia Jonsson, who was tabbed the league’s Freshman of the Year. Hogan’s first season saw Coastal finish with a 2-15-2 record as the Chanticleers fell short in numerous one goal games. Coastal piled up a season-high three goals in a rout of VMI and backed up its performance with a thrilling 1-nil defeat of UNC Asheville. Hogan was introduced as the fourth head women’s soccer coach in Coastal Carolina history on Jan. 5, 2011. “We are extremely excited to have Paul join our athletics family at Coastal Carolina,” Yurachek said. “Paul’s experience with building programs into contenders on the national level, coupled with his recruiting prowess, made him stand out among a great group of candidates. He demonstrated to us a clear plan on how to build a complete championship program - one that has been successfully tested at other University’s - and we are excited to help him execute that plan. He will be a great leader for the young women on our soccer team and a great part of the Coastal Carolina community.” Prior to Coastal, Hogan spent the previous 10 seasons at the University of Colorado under head coach Bill Hempen, the last five as associate head coach. He helping the Buffaloes compile a 104-6424 (.604) record and a national ranking at the end of the 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008 seasons. “I am thrilled for the opportunity to join the Coastal Carolina family and community and lead the women’s soccer program,” said Hogan. “The rich athletic traditions and academic excellence coupled with a great campus location make Coastal Carolina a school full of exponential potential. The women’s soccer program has been successful since its inception, and I look forward to challenges of meeting the standards set by the previous coaches and taking Coastal Carolina women’s soccer to the next level.” Hogan was hired at Colorado in 2001. Two years later, Hogan helped direct the Buffaloes to a 2003 Big XII regular season title, the first in school history, and Big XII Tournament Finals in 2005, 2006 and 2008. In his 10 years, the Buffaloes competed in six NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Sweet 16 during the 2006 season.

COASTAL CAROLINA SOCCER

2016 FACT BOOK

CHANTICLEER SOCCER

CCU SOCCER STADIUM

The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team has called the Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium home since the 2002 season. The Chanticleers opened the field with a 2-1 win over Appalachian State Sept. 1, 2002, and have won over 58 percent of their games on the home turf. Coastal Carolina and the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field hosted the 2006 and 2013 Big South Women’s Soccer Championships and the men’s squad has hosted first-round NCAA Tournament games in 2003, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. The Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium features a full-size pitch with natural grass and bleacher seating for 1,500 on the North side of the complex. A press box and new scoreboard were installed in 2004 and improvements to the aesthetics of the field have been ongoing. In 2011, KWIKGOAL Pro Premiere World Competition Goals and Elite Team Shelters were installed. In the fall of 2013, the Rooster’s Nest, which had been a staple for fans behind the right field wall at the former Watson Stadium, was moved to the East endzone. With the addition of the Roster’s Nest to the Soccer Stadium, the venue’s capacity increased to nearly 2,300. The Rooster’s Nest, which is stadning room only, affords Chanticleer fans a unique view of the action on the field. The Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium surely holds a distinctive homefield advantage for the Chants as the program is 63-34-10 all-time within its friendly confines. The Chanticleers will play nine regular-season home games in 2016, beginning with an August 21 matchup against Wofford.

Retired Number

# 26 - April Stirton

In a ceremony prior to the 2011 women’s soccer alumni game (April 9, 2011), the alumni and current team came together to pay the ultimate homage to a former player, dear friend and role model by officially retiring April Erin Stirton’s number 26 from the women’s soccer program. Stirton’s number was retired almost a year to the day after the CCU women’s soccer family suffered the devastating and tragic loss of Stirton. Stirton, from Waxhaw, N.C., proudly wore the number 26 for the Chanticleers. She entered Coastal Carolina as a junior transfer from Wingate College in the fall of 2002, playing two seasons as a Chanticleer under former head coach Karrie Miller. During that time, Stirton displayed her talent, skill and competitive drive to earn a starting position on the CCU field and simultaneously became an immediate member of the women’s soccer family with her southern charm, compassion and unique personality. During her soccer career at Coastal Stirton started in 38 of the 39 games in which she appeared. Over the 2002-03 seasons, Stirton’s contributions on the defensive end helped lead the Chants to a Big South Championship in 2003. While at Coastal, she was an actively involved student-athlete, was a two-year starter on the women’s soccer team, was a member of the Coastal Carolina University National Competition Cheerleading Squad, an intramural basketball star and a dedicated student of the Wall College of Business.
