WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER?
The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time. Head Coach | University of Charleston (W.Va.), 1995 Seventh season at Coastal Carolina | 57-53-10 Tenth season overall | 92-69-17
H
ogan is in his seventh year as Coastal Carolina’s head women’s soccer coach. In nine seasons as a head coach, Hogan has posted a 92-69-17 record, including a 35-16-7 record in three seasons at Allegheny College (1998-2000) and 57-53-10 record in six seasons at Coastal (2011-present). In the program’s first season in the Sun Belt (2016), Hogan led the Chanticleers to a season-place finish in the regular season and reached the Sun Belt Tournament Championship. Coastal won 12 games for the second straight season (12-6-3) and was 6-2-2 in the league. Daniella Famili and Amber Adams were named to the All-Sun Belt first team while goalkeeper Becca Austin was voted to the second team. Famili went on to be named first team All-South Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America to become the first Chanticleer to earn first team all-region while Adams was named to the third team to mark Coastal’s third and fourth players to be named all-region. (With Kacey Kelley in 2014 and Famili and Adams in 2016, the only three Chants to be named NSCAA All-Region have been under Hogan’s tutelage.)
the Chanticleers took more steps forward in the program’s progression. After tying for second place in the Big South during the regular season with a 7-2-1 record, its best finish since 2010, Coastal notched its first conference tournament win since 2008 with a 2-0 shutout of UNC Asheville, before falling in a tight 2-1 semifinal match against High Point to finish 118-2. Hogan became the third different Chanticleer leader to earn the conference’s top coaching honor. Senior forward Kacey Kelley also made history individually under Hogan, becoming the first Chant to earn NSCAA All-Region honors and the second to be named a Big South Player of the Year as she garnered the attacking award. Five other Coastal players collected all-conference honors. As a team, CCU was second in the Big South during the regular season in fewest goals allowed, not surrendering more than one in any of the 11 conference games, while ranking third in goals scored. The Chanticleers also continued to excel against the league’s best, posting a 1-0 shutout of Liberty on Senior Day to mark the third straight
For the second straight season, Hogan was named the Big South Coach of the Year for the 2015 season as he and the Chanticleers matched the programs progression from last season, after posting their best campaign in seven years. The Chanticleers finished in second place in the Big South during the regular season with a 7-2-1 record, an identical Big South finish to the 2014 campaign. After defeating UNC Asheville 5-0 in the Big South quarterfinal, for the second season Coastal advanced to the Big South semifinals but eventually fell in the semifinal match against Campbell, 2-0, to finish 12-7-1. The 12 victories provided the fourth straight double-digit win season and were also the most for Coastal since 2008. Under Hogan, freshman Kayla Christian become the fourth Chanticleer to garner the Big South Freshman of the Year award. Five other Coastal players collected all-conference honors. Hogan was named the Big South Coach of the Year in 2014 as he and

season in which Coastal has handed the league’s eventual regular-season champion its only conference defeat. In 2013, Hogan guided Coastal to a 10-8-2 record, giving the Chanticleers consecutive double-digit victory campaigns for the first time since 2008. The Chanticleers tied for fourth in the Big South, along the way ending Radford’s 19-game regular-season conference unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory on October 23. The squad also set a new CCU record with 11 shutouts in their 20 games, while allowing just 15 total goals to establish a new program mark for the second year in a row. Seven Chants earned All-Big South honors, including a total of four on the first and second team, tied for most in the conference. Prior to the start of the season, Hogan served as a member of the USYSA Region III Olympic Development staff during the summer. Coastal made a dramatic improvement under Hogan during his second season in 2012, notching eight more victories than the previous year. The Chanticleers finished 10-9 overall and went 7-4 in Big South play, including a perfect 5-0 mark at home. The Chants decreased their goals allowed from 40 in 2011 to a then-school-record 20 and posted eight shutouts, while surrendering the fewest shots of any Big South team. Hogan coached three Chants to All-Big South honors, including Fia Jonsson, who was tabbed the league’s Freshman of the Year. Hogan’s first season saw Coastal finish with a 2-15-2 record as the Chanticleers fell short in numerous one goal games. Coastal piled up a season-high three goals in a rout of VMI and backed up its performance with a thrilling 1-nil defeat of UNC Asheville. Hogan was introduced as the fourth head women’s soccer coach in Coastal Carolina history on Jan. 5, 2011. “We are extremely excited to have Paul join our athletics family at Coastal Carolina,” Yurachek said. “Paul’s experience with building programs into contenders on the national level, coupled with his recruiting prowess, made him stand out among a great group of candidates. He demonstrated to us a clear plan on how to build a complete championship program - one that has been successfully tested at other University’s - and we are excited to help him execute that plan. He will be a great leader for the young women on our soccer team and a great part of the Coastal Carolina community.” Prior to Coastal, Hogan spent the previous 10 seasons at the University of Colorado under head coach Bill Hempen, the last five as associate head coach. He helping the Buffaloes compile a 104-64-24 (.604) record and a national ranking at the end of the 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008 seasons. “I am thrilled for the opportunity to join the Coastal Carolina family

2017 FACT BOOK and community and lead the women’s soccer program,” said Hogan. “The rich athletic traditions and academic excellence coupled with a great campus location make Coastal Carolina a school full of exponential potential. The women’s soccer program has been successful since its inception, and I look forward to challenges of meeting the standards set by the previous coaches and taking Coastal Carolina women’s soccer to the next level.” Hogan was hired at Colorado in 2001. Two years later, Hogan helped direct the Buffaloes to a 2003 Big XII regular season title, the first in school history, and Big XII Tournament Finals in 2005, 2006 and 2008. In his 10 years, the Buffaloes competed in six NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Sweet 16 during the 2006 season. During Colorado’s 14-6-4 season of 2006, the Buffs were ranked 15th nationally in total attendance and second in the Big XII. In addition to his duties as associate head coach on the Boulder campus, Hogan also spent nine seasons coaching the Colorado Olympic Development Program (ODP) teams. Prior to his arrival in Boulder, Hogan spent three seasons at Allegheny College where he guided the Gators to a 35-16-7 (.686) overall record and 17-6-2 (.739) North Coast Athletic Conference mark, while producing 16 AllNCAC players. His three Gator teams finished no lower than third in the final NCAC standings and his 1999 squad won a school-record six conference matches, a feat duplicated by the 2000 team, earning Hogan conference Coach of the Year accolades with his student-athletes earning NCAC Newcomer and Offensive Player of the Year postseason honors. Hogan made the leap to head coach in April 1998 from Duke where he was an assistant for the 1996 and `97 seasons. He assisted the Blue Devils to a two-year record of 28-11. In 1997, Duke finished 15-5-0, including a 4-2-0 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference action, and won the ACC tournament championship. Over his two seasons, Hogan helped coach three All-Americans and 11 All-ACC selections. Previously, Hogan spent one season contributing at his alma mater, the University of Charleston (W.Va.), as a volunteer assistant. He helped Charleston to a 17-3 record and an NCAA Division II playoff berth in 1995. Hogan graduated from Charleston in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in sports science. There, he was a three-time All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection at goalkeeper. He earned All-South Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association in both 1993 and 1994, and led the Golden Eagles to WVIAC championships in 1992 and 1994. Born August 22, 1972, the Monroe, N.Y., native is a 1990 graduate of Washingtonville High School. He is the oldest of two and his younger sister Nancy also played collegiate soccer at Elon. He married former Colorado assistant coach Alli Hunt in May of 2008.The Hogans welcomed their first son Declan Brady Hogan on February 11, 2010 and their second son Carrig James Hogan on February 28, 2012.

COASTAL CAROLINA SOCCER
2017 FACT BOOK
CHANTICLEER SOCCER
CCU SOCCER STADIUM
The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team has called the Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium home since the 2002 season. The Chanticleers opened the field with a 2-1 win over Appalachian State Sept. 1, 2002, and have won over 58 percent of their games on the home turf. Coastal Carolina and the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field hosted the 2006 and 2013 Big South Women’s Soccer Championships and the men’s squad has hosted first-round NCAA Tournament games in 2003, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. The Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium features a full-size pitch with natural grass and bleacher seating for 1,500 on the North side of the complex. A press box and new scoreboard were installed in 2004 and improvements to the aesthetics of the field have been ongoing. In 2011, KWIKGOAL Pro Premiere World Competition Goals and Elite Team Shelters were installed. In the fall of 2013, the Rooster’s Nest, which had been a staple for fans behind the right field wall at the former Watson Stadium, was moved to the East endzone. With the addition of the Roster’s Nest to the Soccer Stadium, the venue’s capacity increased to nearly 2,300. The Rooster’s Nest, which is stadning room only, affords Chanticleer fans a unique view of the action on the field. The Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium surely holds a distinctive homefield advantage for the Chants as the program is 63-34-10 all-time within its friendly confines. The Chanticleers will play nine regular-season home games in 2016, beginning with an August 21 matchup against Wofford.
Retired Number
# 26 - April Stirton
In a ceremony prior to the 2011 women’s soccer alumni game (April 9, 2011), the alumni and current team came together to pay the ultimate homage to a former player, dear friend and role model by officially retiring April Erin Stirton’s number 26 from the women’s soccer program. Stirton’s number was retired almost a year to the day after the CCU women’s soccer family suffered the devastating and tragic loss of Stirton. Stirton, from Waxhaw, N.C., proudly wore the number 26 for the Chanticleers. She entered Coastal Carolina as a junior transfer from Wingate College in the fall of 2002, playing two seasons as a Chanticleer under former head coach Karrie Miller. During that time, Stirton displayed her talent, skill and competitive drive to earn a starting position on the CCU field and simultaneously became an immediate member of the women’s soccer family with her southern charm, compassion and unique personality. During her soccer career at Coastal Stirton started in 38 of the 39 games in which she appeared. Over the 2002-03 seasons, Stirton’s contributions on the defensive end helped lead the Chants to a Big South Championship in 2003. While at Coastal, she was an actively involved student-athlete, was a two-year starter on the women’s soccer team, was a member of the Coastal Carolina University National Competition Cheerleading Squad, an intramural basketball star and a dedicated student of the Wall College of Business.
