When I design a project, I begin with an idea and a thousand sketches, then tr y and fail a million times slowly transforming the failure into success. I designed a book that includes information on the disease that a l l o w s p e o p l e t o u n d e r s t a n d i t b e tt e r. I n terms of format, I used a concept of a photo frame to show one symptom of the d i s e a s e : f o r g e t i n g y o u r f a m i l y. I h o p e t h e r e a d e r w i l n o t o n l y g a i n a b e t t e r u n d e rst anding of Alzheimers but also feel empathy for individuals touched by this disease.

to instill the spirit of Akira Kurosawa movies in a film festival. APPROACH

I heard about Akira Kurosawa, a Japanese f i l m d i r e c t o r, w h e n I w a s y o u n g . I really liked his story telling and the meaning I found in his epic movies, but I hadn’t really researched him until this project. In this class, we needed to understand and distill the essence of one film director and make a film festival based on his work. Most of his movies talk about humanity and show that people always struggle with moral questions. So I made a name of this film f e s t i v a l , S i l e n t S t o r m , t o s h o w p e o p l e ’s c o n s t a n t s t r u g g l e w i t h m o r a l i t y .

I chose Huntington Park to be the subject of my brochure. I used t ype to create a lonely feeling that I feel in this park. Although this park is beautiful and people always relax in here, it reminds me m y h o m e t o w n . I a l s o w r o t e a p o e m t h a t I u s e i n t h e b r o c h u r e , d e s c r i b i n g h o w I feel lonely here. APPROACH

For this project, we needed to find an existing deli, analyze it and then design a whole p a ck a g i n g s ys t e m fo r i t . I ch o s e a G e r m a n d e l i , M ß n ch n e r H a u s , w h i ch h a s s e r ve d t h e S a n Fr a n c i s c o E a s t Bay fo r 3 0 ye a r s . Th e owner bought the store 25 years ago and started to ser ve customers by providing fresh food. I designed a new logo to give them a more modern feeling . The concept of logo comes from the transactional German house. The new logo not only refreshes the look and feel of this deli, but also provides a strong symbol to customers as something t h a t ’s e a s y t o r e m e m b e r.

In this class, we were asked to collaborate with two other classmates to design three b o o k s , e a ch w i t h a d i ffe r e n t t a ke o n t h e s a m e theme. My teammates were Emily Shields a n d M o r g a n M a r c a n i . F i r s t , we p i cke d t h r e e different topics and then combined those ideas into one topic: Punk Is Not Dead. APPROACH

This project was an opportunity to create anything we wanted that used the book art s k i l l s we l e a r n e d i n c l a s s . I ch o o s e t o m a ke a hand-cut book. I found a old dictionar y with beautiful animal illustrations that I used as my subject. I really like animals and care about environment, so I decided to base this project on it. The concept for the project is t h a t i f we d o n’t s t o p p o l l u t i n g e a r t h , b o o k s will be the last place that these animals live.

to design and brand a sustainable birdhouse.

APPROACH

In this project, we needed to design a sustainable birdhouse, so we had to consider the material and the store where it was going to be sold. For my birdhouse, I decided on a typical customer at CB2 as my audience. CBS is a store that sells modern design for the home. I came up with a new name, Secret Base, for my birdhouse and it focused on young adults. Secret Base is not only functional, but also fashionable. The style is modern and cool; something that young people would love to have at home, either i n d o o r o r o u t d o o r.
