Margate

LEE

Brief After first visit to Margate I ask myself a question, how to make Margate be alive again, and then I start to think that is there any way to bring the joy that this town used to represent, like it showed in old picture took in Dreamland and Seaside postcards. Perhaps reconnect people in Margate with sea and pleasure can make them proud of their hometown and love this town used to build by laugh and sea water again. My first impression of Margate

Reconnect With the goal to build a new relationship between people in Margate and sea; also bridge this relationship with pleasure, I start this project.

Bathing Machine In Georgian and Victorian times the bathing machines were designed to prevent anyone from seeing a woman in her swimsuit before she slipped into the waves. It was as developed in 1750 in Margate, Kent. In a nutshell: A woman walks into the booth, changes, and when she's ready a horse gets hitched to the machine and drags her out to sea, at which point the machine becomes a floating changing buoy. Once the machine plunged far enough out into the ocean waves, the woman could quickly dive off the float. Thanks to these boxy hideaways, no one got scandalized by said woman's (decidedly unsexy) bathing tarpaulin. http://www.fastcodesign.com/3029441/victorian-bathingmachines-so-men-couldnt-get-their-rocks-off/8

Focus Feature Movement The process of how Bath Machine works is really interesting. I try to imaging the picture of a house drag a hut to the sea and then after a while drag it back. This picture keeps lingering in my head because the whole movement seems to make a tunnel or a bridge from land to the sea.

Occupation When keep visualize the process of this mobile changing space there is another things also shows a delicate trait. Due to keep privacy, the tent at the back of Bath Machine creates an area that is totally belonged to one person, a temporary occupation, which brings the sense of security. Studies 9

Interior of Bath Machine Following the description that depicts the interior of Bath Machine I draw this imaging view. It's a closed, elegant space that equips all a woman need after they have sea bath. The materials it used shows a strong sense of historical association. *Snow-white enamel paint *One-half of the floor is pierced with many holes, to allow of free drainage from wet flannels.

The imaging view of Bath machine’s inside

*The other half of the little room is covered with a pretty green Japanese rug. *Ruffles of white muslin trimmed with lace and narrow green ribbons decorate every available space.

Squence of Texture Experience I still focus on the process but switch the perspective from viewer to who experienced. The touching experience, mainly from feet, is really rich that all the way from beach to diving into waves. The feeling normally being ignore would have a great potential to create something new. Studies 13

Sequence of Facilities As for bathing, I do some study of the sequence of this activity. Some of it have a clear order some are not. But all is aimed to make people relax.

Before going into final proposal I work with these mini projects or experiments which I try to create an enjoyable relationship with water, sea. For me everyone have different character that could grow and become a complete individual.

The Tunnel These sketches showed in my head when I walk alone the road near the bay. It is a huge plan that might build a network from the Margate train station. Imagine if there is a tunnel that could guide the visitors directly to the middle of the sea. The impact that can feel the power of the waves at a floating position should be strong. Experiments 19

The scetion shows the relationship with water

Seaside Gallery This structure was inspired by the occupation relationship between Bath Machine and the sea. The pool that is surrounded by colonnade is actually part of sea. The whole structure only floats on water and create a conversation of inside and outside. It's a place for public that allow them to having a new connection to the sea. 12.04.16

The moment when the room- Massage room’s light is stronger

This is another try that transfer the relationship of inside-out, occupation from Bath Machine. In this idea, the massage room reserved a totally privacy and security but keep communicating with outside through the window faced down. Through the splash and waves of activity that people make when walking past corridor the reflection of water and light can send to inside and vice versa.

Oval SPA Center In this stage, I focus more on bringing the joy to the relationship with the water, so I introduced a huge pool structure into this existing building’s ground floor and open the ceiling completely make it into an outdoor yard. When people come into this place, first go to the counter, changing room and then walk down to the basementsauna room and walk up to the warm room to cool down then they can enjoy the cold pool swimming.

Story Board

At 23.05.2016 I start to think the visual style and the way I want to present in this proposal. Due to the beginning of this idea was inspired by the perspective of a traveler who first came to Margate, like my first visit. In what way can attract him from the road to beach, to sea. So I tried to imaging a path from train station, walk along the bay and notice this structure, and then walk up into this machine... Proposal 33

Inspired by the facility and the movement of Baht Machine

Develops With the goal to reconnect people in Margate to the sea and pleasure again I decide to design a structure that connect land and sea water; also due to the weather condition in UK. Having a hot bath pool facility which was sheltered by the shape of lighthouse in Margate make this structure could be used much longer in a year and create a clear motivation make people go into the middle sea.
