A message from our President... Happy Holidays. It’s hard for me not to be optimistic about the club’s future. 2012 was a great year for Chapel Hill Country Club, We hired a superb General Manager and fantastic chef. Golng opportunities were expanded with a Tuesday Night Men’s League and a 6 hole beginning ladies program. Financially, there is no excess money and budgets are still tight, but the club is ending the year in the best nancial position we have had for the last 4 years -- not only have we survived in these tough times, we are growing. Membership-wise for the rst time since 2008 we will end the year with over 700 members. But uncertainty still exists and we need to continue to invite friends and neighbors to join. In 2013, you will see us continuing to make infrastructure improvements, removing trees that hinder healthy greens and preparing for the 2014 transition to Bermuda greens. We will cut costs in some areas while expending additional funds in other areas. The year is coming to an end, but we still have one major golng event, the Christmas Cup and numerous holiday activities. The Christmas Cup will be held on Dec 7th.. Everyone’s invited to participate. There’s a nominal entry fee, plus two gifts, $20 - $25 or more each, one for a boy and one for a girl. The gifts go to the Chapel Hill Christmas House. Over the years we have been the biggest contributor to this local charity. Even if you don’t play golf, you’re welcome to bring your gifts and join us at the conclusion of the play for hors d’oeuvres. I lose track, but I think this is the ninth year. What many of you don’t know was that the idea for this event did not come from either the Board or the Golf Committee. Tim Mann, at the time a relatively new member, organized and conducted the rst event on his own. I’m probably exaggerating, but it seems like the rst event was men only, it snowed and we held the award ceremonies downstairs in the old men’s locker room. Since this the event has grown in both the number of entrants, both male and female, and number of contributions for the Christmas House. In January we will welcome a new slate of ofcers and begin the process of forming new committees. A question sometimes arises about non-voting member participation. (Voting members are Resident, Junior Resident, Corporate, and Senior Honorary who have fully paid their initiation fees.) While non- voting members do not count in the quorum and may not vote on the Finance, Strategic Planning, or Bylaws committees, they may serve in a non-voting capacity on these committees and serve in full capacity on the Golf, Green, Membership, Tennis, Pool, and House committees. If you are interested in serving please contact Don Hunter.

House Committee

Sometimes, you just can’t give stuff away. It’s frustrating. This was the inaugural year of birthday night. Each member gets a free meal on the rst Tuesday of the month in which his (or her) birthday falls. We’ve tried to get the word out, but members have not grabbed this freebie quite as eagerly as I would have thought. Nor have they taken advantage in any signicant numbers of the free bottle of wine or champagne offer at anniversary dinners, another of this year’s innovations.

An average of 14 members a month are taking advantage of the birthday and/or anniversary packages. Most of these represent birthdays. (I suppose people prefer food to champagne.) As a percentage of membership, 14 is a low number, given that we had 120 birthdays in November. What can we do to encourage participation? We likely will start sending out birthday cards to members, reminding them of our birthday night celebration. Most of us are very busy, and so it’s understandable that the rst Tuesday freebie would slip your mind. But it’s there for you. Take it if you can. Which brings us to anniversary night. You can decide which night that is. Just pick a night near your anniversary date, call the club, and make a reservation. We’ve billed the gift on this night as a bottle of champagne. That’s accurate, if champagne is what you want. But if you’d rather have a bottle of wine, and I suspect most of us would, you can get a bottle of wine. Just tell your waitperson. Of course, we’ve put a cap on how much the bottle is worth. We can’t have members coming in and gleefully ordering, for free, a $100 bottle of wine, or even one for $50. So we’ve capped the value at $20, or in that immediate vicinity. Now, as we run out of 2012, I’d like to tell you whom to thank, or fuss at,for what the house committee did or didn’t do during the year. Our committee members have been good and faithful soldiers and the club is a better place for their work. So Laura Ellgen, Carrie Brogren, Maggie Hanes, Shell Roufail, Rob Goss, Bren and Stan Eskridge and Kathleen Lessard, here’s to you all. I’ve enjoyed our time and labor together. Thank you. Larry Cheek, House Committee Chairman

Membership This month, we welcome Brian Polzak and Jacqueline Lau-Chial, Stanley and Jeanette Kimmel, and William and Carolyn Carpenter to our club family! 2012 has been a great year, and we can only look forward to greater and more impressive Club events. We hope to see you for our Hoiday events, and please let us know your thoughts about what you’d like to see happening at the club. Please don’t forget that new members must be sponsored by two current members, so if you have friends who might be wishing to join, please contact us and invite them to explore all the club has to offer. We’re happy to help with showing them around. Thank you all for a wonderful 2012, and we look forward to seeing you all during the Holiday Season and in the New Year!

The highlight of this month is now that most of the dues credits have burned off, we are seeing signicant growth in our dues line helping to create a positive month. This growth in dues will help improve the long term cash ow of your club. Food and beverage had a good month, and our cost of sales is now falling in line with the budget. Labor in food and beverage is higher than expected based on more a la carte business and less banquets. This shows that we are focusing more on member service and less on outside events. We did have the moving expenses for our new general manager as an unplanned onetime expense.

Course Conditions The greens height has been raised slightly in order to gain some top growth going into the winter. The ball roll will be affected only slightly, since the rate of growth this time of year has slowed. Our winter operations continue, concentrating on leaf removal, brush removal, cart path edging, etc. Over the next few weeks, items on the course will become “missing”. All ballwashers, tee markers, benches and trash cans will be taken off the course to go through their annual renishing. Over the next few months, a few more bunkers will be prepared for re-construction. The three bunkers that were completed last year proved to me a huge success. These have proven themselves resistant to contamination; therefore able to drain properly. Also, every bunker that is reconstructed saves countless hours of maintenance after each storm. The plan is to do a few more than last year, concentrating on the ones in the most need of repair. Thank you- Craig S. Thompson, CGCS

Nifty Niners News Nifties, add some early sparkle to your holiday season and come to our traditional Nifty Niner Christmas Party on Friday November 7. The festivities are at the Club this year, and co-chairs Lisa Gabriel and Karen Lazarus have planned a lovely evening, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Please remember to RSVP to Lisa or Karen. Our 2012 ofcial golf season closed on a high note, with a fun superball tournament, lunch, annual awards, and business meeting. Winning superball team members were Linda Johnston, Sue Bernstein, Bren Eskridge, and Nancy Atkinson. Special congratulations go to Kate Eifrig, who won the most improved player award and the ringers competition. Mary McClure had the most wins, and Candy Owens was “always faithful,” playing on more game days than anyone else. Good golf, gals! The leadership team elected for 2013 is Kate Eifrig, president; Candy Owens, vice president; Wendy Pease, treasurer; and JoAnn Mayer, secretary. We are in good hands! I n f o r m a l Thursday golf continues all winter for the Niners. Our tee time is 10:00—call ahead or just come on out. You won’t be able to win one of our treasured golf balls, but you can work on your game and enjoy socializing. Speaking of enjoyment, serving as Nifty Niner president for these last two years has been such a pleasure. I thank you for your friendship and for the wonderful support to our organization and to me that so many of you contributed for our 2011-2012 journey together. You ladies are the greatest! Suzan Cheek, Nifty Niners President

SMGA News The Fall SMGA Awards Banquet marks the end of major events for 2012. The CHCC staff went all out and the attendees enjoyed one of the better dinners this year. Kudos to Chef Jimmy Reale for an excellent meal. The event celebrated Ed Kaiser’s sixth Championship trophy and John Latimer’s President’s Tournament victory. All members were winners this year with favorable weather and good turnouts for all events. We welcome our 2013 President Dick Ellgen, Vice President Terry Flynn and new Board members Franklin Lamn, Andy Mayer, Tony Oberschall, Paul Richardson, Dan White and Jim Williams. We will miss Don Bolton, Lou Hightower, Rick Lessard and Jim Pease’s presence on the Board. Benson Pilloff is Playday Chairman for December with a start time of 9:30 a.m. We expect to nish the year on a positive note before the holidays and cooler weather. It has been my privilege to serve as SMGA President this year. I greatly appreciate the strong support of the Board members. Many thanks to Rick, Alan and the pro shop team for their terric support for our activities. John McGee, SMGA President

WGA News Holiday Greetings to Everyone from the Women’s Golf Association! Although our beautiful fairways have gone from glorious green to winter yellow they are still in great shape accompanied by some good fall golf-playing weather. The WGA closed their 2012 playing year on October 30th with what was supposed to be a nine-hole tournament followed by our awards luncheon. As it turns out Mother Nature intervened with some pretty chilly weather that day so although we missed out on golf we enjoyed a fabulous luncheon on Isaac’s Porch -- as captured by our roving photographer, Linda Johnston. Vice President Carolyn Hightower announced our 2012 award winners as follows: Lily Lee, Most Wins, Linda Johnston (aka “Old Faithful”) Best Attendance, and Most Improved Player went to Diane Koenigshofer whose handicap went from 12.5 to 10.4. Congratulations Lily, Linda, and Diane! We have learned that two of our WGA members, Nelle Neal and Betsy Terrell will be leaving the club this year. Betsy has been a CHC member since 1967, and Nelle has been a member since 1971 and has won 6 WGA championships! The WGA just won’t be the same without these two lovely ladies and we wish them both well. And to any of you guys out there looking for holiday gift suggestions for your favorite lady golfer remember the Santa’s Helper Pro Shop Sale on Wednesday, December 5th from 5-9 pm. This event is for gentlemen only, but ladies can visit the Pro Shop any time before December 5th to ll out their wish list for any of their favorite Pro Shop item --and to really make things easy gift wrapping will be available. Speaking of the holidays the WGA will be holding our holiday party this year on January 11th. Be sure to save the date and look for more information from organizer Shere Stone over the next few weeks. That’s all from the WGA. Hope everyone enjoys a happy, peaceful holiday and a New Year with continued enjoyment -- and maybe even some improvement in your golf game. Laura Ellgen, WGA President

With the revamping of our Tuesday/Thursday clinics, Derek, Jarrod, Gene, Greg, Lindsay and Jaime have been enjoying the success our juniors here at CHCC and the increased participation. Although they did not leave the tournament as State Championships, they certainly left with their heads held high having made all the coaches Very proud of their accomplishments! We have a total of 22 juniors currently ranked in North Carolina in their respective age divisions. This is most we’ve ever had, and it’s still growing! We had well over 100 adults play this year in our USTA spring, summer and fall seasons as well as over 35 ladies who played in our spring and fall Triangle Tennis League. We’d like to send out a big THANK YOU to the members for being so patient and cooperative as court availability was tough on some days due to the amount of matches we had scheduled each week during the season. It only got worse when we had to mix in make-up matches due to rain outs, so again, thank you so much for your cooperation! And to ALL the captains this year, thank you for taking on the responsibility of this “job.” Without your time and effort of keeping the teams organized each season, we would not be as successful as we have become each season. So keep up the great work! Congrats to our following Adult teams this year: (Spring) Advanced to the State Championships: 3.0 “Verbalettes” Kylie Harris, Amy Nussbaumer, Maggie Hanes, Kristen Carmouche, Ramsey White, Nanci Jordan, Christie Osborne, Fran Wilson, Carey Baddour, Shell Roufail, Jamie Freedman, Marybeth Evers and Kathy Linger. They nished with a 3-1 record at states.
