President’s Message
Jay Kennihan, President
hings are hopping on campus, yes? Check out all the new faces! To date we have one hundred and one new members, of which sixty four are regular resident, the balance being a mix of sport and social memberships, as well as those who have upgraded. Well done to our Membership Director, Jamie Harper, as well as to our Membership Chair, Louis Tortora and the Membership Committee! A quick note regarding membership, let’s continue with our efforts in attracting new members. The campus is in the best shape ever, so get the word out to your friends and neighbors that hands down, in all of Chapel Hill and the surrounding communities, the Chapel Hill Country Club is the place to be. With new faces comes demand, whether on the golf course, tennis courts, at the Pool, or in the Clubhouse. If at all possible, reach out to the staff and let them know you are headed their way. A reservation will help in planning for your arrival, and will help to ensure your Club experience is a special one. Notice the pretty flowers out on the front nine of the golf course? Thank you to Karen Lazarus, chair of the Garden Club, and also to the Garden Club Committee for their efforts, nicely done! Notice the newly renovated driving range as well as the drainage project along the fairway on 14? That is your Greens Committee at your service, co-chaired by Gus Neville and Ken Allman. In addition, you can see all kinds of improvements on the golf course; a thank you to those folks on the Greens Committee as well as a tip of the cap to our Golf Course Superintendent, Craig Thompson. The Nominating Committee for 2016-2017 is in place. They have been charged with gathering for nomination four Members of our Club to replace the four Directors who are rolling off the Board. If you know a person you think would be a good candidate to be considered, please contact Mike Brogren, the Nominating Committee Chair; I am sure he would welcome your candidate recommendations. So, we’re right at the halfway mark for 2016. How are we doing? I want to hear from you; the good, the bad, what can we improve and what do we do well? Reach out to me, I am at your service.

Club Information Greens Update From the Greens Committee
T
here is a new look for your golf course. From an editorial in Golfweek, “On a golf course the player’s eye scans the horizon. The more it sees of natural contours, the more pleasing and beautiful the experience will be. The occasional specimen tree or copse is fine, as it provides natural counterbalances to undifferentiated open space. But too often courses are littered with vertical items that simply clutter the space.” Your Green Committee has embraced this philosophy and is making changes that we believe will enhance the golfing experience at CHCC. Items such as water stations and ball washers have been moved to less obtrusive locations or in the case of some ball washers, eliminated. Most players like to putt with a clean ball and therefore carry some means of washing their ball on the green but it is nice to have a means of removing the last remnants of grime and you still need only go a few holes between washers. We also have ordered new trash baskets that soon will be in place. Craig and his staff have the course in exquisite condition and have made many improvements including the recycled cedar stakes and the painting of the fans and the pump house. We would like to thank the CHCC Garden Club for the work they have done. The flowers at the ladies’ tees at #1, #3, #5 and #7 and in the triangle between 2nd green and 3rd tee are examples of their work and greatly add beauty of our golf course. When you read this message the changes for the driving range should be complete and the new sod and artificial turf in place. Our range has been a continuing problem with the basic issue being that it is too small. Therefore we plan two polices that we hope will extend the life of the sod. First, we will be using the new artificial turf more extensively, even in good weather. Our plan is to use the mats three days a week and the grass three days. This policy can be changed for special events. Second, we are planning a program to educate our members in a way to maximize the use of grass on a driving range. Please place your ball at the grassy back edge of your previous divot, removing just a small portion of grass with each swing. A board showing this method of use will be placed on the range and if you have questions consult our professional staff. Another policy change results from the disparity of use between the first nine holes and the back nine. The greater use of the front nine adversely affects the tees and greens of that nine holes. Therefore, for at least one week each month all play, Tuesday through Sunday, will begin on #10. This will more evenly distribute the use between nines.
Care for the Course
R
emember to fix your ball mark plus one on each green this summer as the greens are soft and more susceptible to ball marks, fill your divots with sand, and rake the bunker after use. Please remember to pick up the balls after using the short game areas. As we prepare to open the new tee on the driving range, be sure to take the proper divot pattern as shown below:
Best Bad Worst Take long strips, not random divots or patches.
Dress Code Update From the House Committee
I
t’s summer time at CHCC. Lots of adults, children and guests are in and out of the Club daily. That’s great! As always- I’m very proud to be a part of CHCC and know you are too. With summer and all the things going on now it’s easy to forget that we do have a dress code and rules to follow. The dress code for the Club is a relaxed one, but appropriate attire is required. Wearing bathing suits, coverups, gym clothing, work jeans, ripped or torn clothing and overly graphic t-shirts are not suitable for the club house. Men need to take off their hats and visors. Children under the age of 18 are not permitted in Lawson’s Bar. Children under the age of 11 are not allowed in the locker rooms unless supervised. Those between the ages of 11-17 may shower/change in the locker rooms, but not stick around for socializing. As for cell phones, please do not take or place calls in the dining areas or bars. If you need to make/take a call, please step outside to do so! Enjoy your summer at CHCC. There’s so much tennis, golf, swimming and children’s camps going on that on any given day you should head this way – there’s definitely something to do.

he SMGA season is moving along smoothly. WE WANT MORE PARTICIPATION FROM OUR MEMBERS. We have over 90 members and need more of you to play. We play three times a week and once a month on Sunday. The normal game is on Wednesday and features differing formats. The Tuesday game starts at 7:26AM for those that want to beat the heat of the North Carolina Noon and the Friday game starts at 9:00. The Sunday game starts at 12:26 for 18 holes and 2:26 for 9 holes to allow all to meet after the round. We have plenty of room and want more participation. Sign up by calling the Pro Shop or use google sheets. Dan White can give you any details you may need. You do not need to be a SMGA member to try us out. Please give John Pyecha a call if you would like to join us for any of the events listed. We would be happy to accommodate you. The biggest criticism of the SMGA is slow play, however, due to the implementation of our new tee time stacking, we are generally finishing 18 holes in 4 hours and 30 minutes as compared to the USGA time set from the blue tees of 4 hours and 19 minutes. So don’t be a victim of innuendo or let the facts confuse you. Come join us. The clinic schedule is moving forward and we are having a great turn out for them – especially the short game clinic. The clinics focus on key aspects of the game. They are $30 and include a 1-hour clinic and lunch. They are run by both Joe Alden and Rick Brannon and continue throughout the season. Call the Pro Shop. Congratulations to Ed Burke for his HOLE IN ONE on #15. I understand it was a one bouncer into the cup. Our season is progressing nicely. The Member/Member tournament was won by Harvey Ainbinder and Rick Lessard with a blistering 56 on the first day. The Member/Guest day one tournament was won by Mike Slomianyi and his guest Connor Griffin. The Day 2 tournament was won by Mark Attwood and his guest – previous member Jim Williams, who also won the overall tournament on the third playoff hole. We are moving nicely through the Presidents Match Play Tournament with the high handicappers dominating the match play. The FED-EX points are piling up with Patrick Curley and Jerry Gschwind in 1st and 2nd place. Lastly, the Board has voted to allow the entire Club Membership to have access to the SMGA website, so if you want to just get some information on the group, please feel free to browse. We have plenty of golf ahead of us so come join us.
Golf Ladies Golf Association (LGA)
M
embers of The CHCC Ladies Golf Association have been quite busy since the last update, with the following events; LGA invites the SMGA, the Carolina Classic (Road to Rio), Play Days and clinics with Sally Austin. Hopefully, it will continue with less rain and a drier course. So far, the new LGA organization with the combining of the two golf groups, is going smoothly. Two play days each week, new golfers to play with and less competition seem to be working fine. Loads of rain and “cart path only” has kept our attendance down. Hopefully, with the weather cooperating, we will see more ladies coming out and joining in the fun for 9 or 18 holes. We welcome all! Having trouble keeping up with all the planned LGA events? Maybe you have not picked up your LGA Directory for 2016. Yours may be waiting for you in the PRO Shop in the Handicap Computer Cabinet. We have had several clinics and more to come. On 6/13 and 6/27 Sally will be working with us on Course Management. That will be great as the course seems to manage us most of the time. These two clinics, as well as Fairway Woods/ Driver Clinic (6/20), are on Mondays so make sure you get your clubs prior to the clinic, as the Pro Shop will not be open. On 6/11 and 6/21 is Play with the Pro, my favorite. Here Sally plays a few holes with everybody and shows you pointers along the way. Make sure to mark these days on your calendar. June 15 is the Chipping and Putting clinic which we always need over and over again. On Thursday June 23, we will be hosting the Tri-Nine at CHCC. Please sign up as we want our club to be well represented. Hosting Tri-Nine is especially fun. We get to show off our club while playing with other ladies from other clubs in a Captains Choice format. We finish off with a nice lunch together. This is an excellent way to meet
players from other clubs. On July 19, Tri-Nine will be held at MacGregor and August 11 at Brier Creek. Please sign up early for these events. For more competitive play, we have Triangle Interclub Play (TIP). This is a match play event against other clubs. Each month, 4 LGA members travel to participating clubs in the area for Triangle competition. In June, we travel to Bentwood Country Club and in July to Brier Creek. Starting in June until Sept, our Play Day Shot Guns are on Tuesday and Thursday at 8:28 for both 9 and 18 hole players. One shot gun for all players, both those playing 9 and 18, has worked well and will continue until we have an increase in players and need to have two separate shot guns as we had originally planned. You will be notified if and when this needs to change. The Classic, our Member – Guest Tournament has set a new standard. It was GREAT!, The theme was Road to Rio. The decorations, food, games and music were all wonderful but best of all were the costumes of our members and guests. You would have thought we had traveled to Rio. Everyone was amazed and enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks to Suzanne Kozel and Shere Stone for their leadership in making this event so wonderful for the past 10 years. As you are playing the front 9, please note the work that the CHCC Garden Club has done to beautify the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th Ladies tee boxes as well as the planting area between 2 and 3. Thanks to Karen Lazarus and her CHCC Garden Club members for their efforts at making our golf course even more beautiful. We have Camaradie Day coming up Thursday July 21. Diane Koenigshofer will be responsible for the activities so you know it will be fun for all. Look for more information in the next few weeks and signup early. Stay tuned and sign up on our google doc for all activities. As events or times change for events, emails will be sent to assure everyone gets the word. If you need any help with signing up, or just want more information about the LGA organization, please contact any of the people listed below.

he 2016 Junior Team Tennis Season has come to an end here at CHCC, and what another Great season we have had! We were able to field 8 teams this season (60 juniors!) which is the most of ANY club in the area and the most we have ever had. This is a true testament to the growth of our Junior Program here and the support from ALL the parents. So a Big THANK YOU Parents!! No matter of the teams’ results, all the Pros here at CHCC have been so proud of the effort each and every one of the juniors have put forth on and off the court during the season. Both of our 8 & under teams had a lot of new faces on the court, as did our 10s beginner, 12s beginner and 14s intermediate teams and despite going up against tough competition, we know they all gave it their best for each match. Some of our juniors on these teams were playing for the first time in an organized setting, or having to play up in age level. So a Big Congrats to them! Our 10s, 12s & 18s Intermediate teams finished the regular season in first place and have advanced to the State Championships in Lake Norman the weekend of July 1517. So CHCC will be sending 3 Junior Teams to States this year…..WAY TO GO!! 8 & Under Beginner 0-5 8 & Under Intermediate 1-5 (3rd Place) 10 & Under Beginner 0-7 10 & Under Intermediate 6-0 (1st Place) 12 & Under Beginner 3-3 (2nd Place) 12 & Under Intermediate 5-0 (1st Place) 14 & Under Intermediate 2-3 (2nd Place) 18 & Under Intermediate 5-0 (1st Place)

The CHCCR Sharks are 5-0! This is the most successful start to a dual meet season the Sharks have had in a very long time and they are getting it done with a very small but mighty team! With wins over Heritage Hills/Homestead Aquatics, Hollow Rock/Stoneridge, Briar Chapel, Hillsborough Sportsplex and The Chapel Hill Tennis Club, the Sharks are on a roll headed into their final HOME meet of the season on July 6th vs. The Farm-YMCA. Coaches Matt Nelson, Liz Jensen, Emery Harwell, Paige Jones, Julia Long, Emily Trusky and Tom Bilden have done a remarkable job this season encouraging all the kids to attend practices and meets. They know exactly how to make swim team a fun place to be and it shows through the great swimming and smiling faces. The Sharks are not only winning swim meets but they are having a great time out of the pool as well. The 11 & older Sharks enjoyed a pizza party and late night swim with coaches, while the 10& under’s beat their coaches in bowling. All the Sharks, young and old spent the afternoon at “Finding Dory” last weekend following their Saturday swim meet win. “Life Is Great When You’re A Shark!” The CHCCR Sharks will wrap up their season at the CHSSL Championship Swim Meet held at Koury Natatorium and celebrate with their Awards Banquet on July 17th. GOOOOOOOOO SHARKS!
he STAR, Special Treatment And Recognition, program was created as a way to recognize employees for doing an exceptional job by going above and beyond. If there is an employee that you feel deserves recognition for a job well done, take a moment to fill out a STAR card and let us know. STAR cards are available in the lobby of the Clubhouse. You Gabriel Gumeta can also request a digital copy of the nomination card by emailing Melanie Windrem, mwindrem@ chapelhill-cc.com. A special thank you to all of the members who have already written in and nominated various employees over the past couple of months. All cards are given to the employees nominated regardless of whether or not they are the award recipient. Alisa is our Activities Director, Alisa Rawls and constantly goes above and beyond for the Club and its members. Recently she created a large mural, as well as signage and other miscellaneous marketing items for the Carolina Classic. She does all this extra work while also organizing Summer Camp for all the Club kids. Amazing job Alisa. Gabriel was recognized again this month as a very deserving recipient of the S.T.A.R. employee award. He puts this Club and it’s Jennifer members and staff first, and we couldn’t be happier to have him as a part of our team. Thank you Gabriel. Jennifer is our dining room hostess who also takes tables when needed. She was chosen this month because she perfectly exemplifies an employee that goes above and beyond whenever possible. She is always looking for something to do, or a way to help someone out without be asked. Jennifer keeps a positive attitude and is constantly encouraging her fellow employees. Keep up the great work Jennifer.
