S M No matter the reason that you initially joined Chapel Hill Country Club, what you eventually realize is that our membership is like no other. Our members are what set us apart from all other clubs in the state and even the country. CHCC has a history steeped in the selfless giving of its members. There were times in the past where members like Ted Seagroves and Royce Montgomery used their own personal money to pay for Club supplies, such as food inventory, and staff payroll. Pegge Folger and Jean O’Daniel brought in Christmas decorations from their homes and spent their time making sure the Clubhouse looked festive for the holidays. Mahatma Ghandi told us to “be the change that you wish to see in the world,” and members like these fully embrace that spirit by not just wanting and waiting, but rather by taking action for the betterment of our Club. We are beginning to see a resurgence in this giving spirit. As many of you have noticed, our current playground is in dire need of a makeover. Th e current structure lacks many safety features, is rotting in some places, and looks as though it were made for someone’s backyard, not a well-established country club. CHCC member Louis Tortora and his wife Elizabeth have identified the need for a new space where their two daughters and other youth at the Club can safely play and fully enjoy themselves. Th ey have since approached the Board with a gracious offer of up to $20,000 in matching funds towards the creation of an improved play space, not for recognition and admiration from others, but because it is for the betterment of the Club. Instead of complaining about the current situation, the Tortoras have decided to do something about it, to “be the change” that they want to see at Chapel Hill Country Club. Hopefully, we can all work together to support our Club by following in the gracious footsteps of those before us by donating to this great project.

Sincerely, The Playground Commitee “A Club is its membership and it can only give us what we empower it to give us. If we expect things from our club, then we have to give it what it needs to accomplish those goals.”

Louis Tortora

A  H Over time, imperfections, scars and scratches combine to mar the beauty of a new building, mainly because over time the building becomes not new, but used. That’s where our clubhouse is today. Used. It seems only yesterday that we were working on the builder’s punch list. Now, we’re touching up. We’ve made a list of the necessary repairs and the staff has been digging into it at a timely pace. It’s a staff project. No money is being spent to bring in outside workers, which helps our club’s bottom line. One big step that has been taken is replacing all the caulking. This was paid for with funds from the recent insurance settlement for the winter flood damage. The board also approved money to refinish the clubhouse building’s hardwood floors, which you may have noticed was much needed. Th e work was tentatively scheduled for August, but may have to wait until January, when we can better afford to close for a couple of days. Complaints about the overall dining experience at the club have fallen upon the committee’s ears. Our general manager is insisting on the need for better performance from his staff, and better financial results. Approximately 60 percent of the current wait staff are career servers, and this, along with more carefully monitored training, should lead to more consistent service. Note: I spent some time in Italy in early June. Th e service was uniformly impeccable. To the Italians, the words “dining experience” are practically holy. But the members of Chapel Hill Country Club don’t have to go halfway across the world to enjoy high quality food choices. Chef Reale and his staff are pretty good at what they do also. So come on out and enjoy. Larry Cheek Chairman of the House Committee

Carolinas Against Cancer Golf Outing Honoring Ted Seagroves

On Monday, July 7, our Club will be hosting a golf tournament in conjunction with the Carolinas Chapter of the Club Managers Association of America. The tournament will be dedicated to CHCC’s own Ted Seagroves, with the goal of raising at least $6,000 to be contributed to pancreatic cancer research. Ted has invested much into Club Managers throughout the Carolinas over the years, and is a true friend to the Club and to golf. There will be teams from country clubs throughout North and South Carolina playing, and we would love to have 10 to 15 Chapel Hill teams to come out in support of this great cause! All of the proceeds from this event will go to cancer research. The cost is $75 per player, made out in a check to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. You may register as an individual or as a team through the Golf Shop, Don Hunter or Julie Aridas. You can also be an event sponsor without playing. We hope that you will join the CMAA Carolinas and Chapel Hill Country Club in the fight against cancer!

We will then break for a great lunch in the CHCC clubhouse before teeing off for 9 holes of golf. Drinks will be provided on the courts for players to enjoy while lunch will be member charge. The format for Golf will be a Scottish Twosome Format and for Tennis, it will be a modified ping-pong game playing up to 31 points. Both sports will have the necessary handicaps to make every team even and competitive. Contact Jaime Montalvo or Lindsay Benton in the proshop to sign up or for more information. The cost will be $40 per person, which will include golf and tennis fees, appetizers and prizes.

Men’s & Women’s Singles Championships Saturday, October 25 – November 22 For this year, we will organize this event similar to a professional tournament…only giving the members a little bit longer to play their matches. Once the tournament draw is set in each division (3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and 50+) for the Men and Women, each match will have a week’s time to be played. Championship Saturday will be held on November 22 with a cookout to follow for all competitors. Please stay tuned for further details on this great event. 10

GOLF COMMITTEE COMMENTS

The members of this year’s committee are listed. Please feel free to provide any comments or recommendations you might have to any of the committee members:

A Special Shout Out… Let us all wish Ahmad Rahman good luck in his upcoming travels! A rising senior at UNCG, Ahmad, was invited to play in the Congressional Pro-Am on June 23rd. Ahmad was also selected to travel to Denmark, all expenses paid, to represent the United States National Special Olympics team on July 27th – 30th! Good luck Ahmad, and safe travels!

Rick Brannon (CHCC Golf Professional) James King (Dogfight) Terry Barker (Committee Chairman) Henry Essey (Gross Group/The Tradition) Kate Eifrig (Nifty Niners) Joe Vozella (Sunday Morning Group) Diane Koenigshofer (WGA) Gus Neville (MGA) Terry Flynn (SMGA) Linda Johnston The golf course has “greened up” and it’s a great time of the year to play golf at CHCC. Keep an eye on the club newsletters, on e-mails, and on displays at the club for information on upcoming golf events. I would like to mention one other event recently added to the schedule. On August 1st, the Senior Golfers of America (http://swansongolfersamerica.com/) will make a brief presentation (with refreshments) about their organization. Kaye and I attended our first SGA event in 2005 at Th e Cloisters, Sea Island, GA. Since then we have traveled to many beautiful places with the SGA and have met many wonderful new friends. Th e SGA hosts an event every month at a top-tier location, mostly within the USA. If you are age 50 or more, please plan to attend. All senior members that attend will receive a free year membership in the SGA and will have an opportunity to win a free trip to one of their events in a 1 hole putting contest (remember to bring your putter). Stay tuned for more information but mark your calendar for 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm on Friday, August 1. And after the SGA event, why not stay at the club and enjoy the Friday night buffet. You will note some new “drop zones” on holes 8, 10, 11, 14, and 18 that have been defined by Ron Johnston, Gus Neville (both are qualified Rules Officials), and Rick. These drop zones are great for every day play and for use by higher handicap players. Th ey can make the game more enjoyable and speed up play. No one should feel like they are cheating if they chose to use a drop zone. They are optional - as a golfer you have a choice: play from where you hit the previous shot, drop the ball in accordance with the rules, or use the drop zone. Scores can be posted for handicap purposes after using the drop zone. Several comments - All the selected zones conform to the USGA guidance, which is: when playing to the center of the green the golfer must have to play over a portion of the water hazard. Drop Zones can be closer to the hole. A perfect example is the 17th at the TPC, the teeing area is 130 yards from the green and the drop zone is only 75 yards from the green. A similar situation occurs at #13 at the Masters. If you are playing in a tournament, the tournament committee or tournament director is responsible for determining if drop zones are in play for that event.

(Ahmad and his mother warming up before going out to play! )

To improve your golf experience at CHCC we are supporting the USGA initiatives “While We Are Young” and “Play It Forward”. Rick has prepared an excellent presentation that addresses these topics. Our goal is to have all CHCC golfing members attend one of the scheduled presentations. So far 142 golfing members have attended a presentation. If you haven’t been able to attend a presentation yet, keep an eye on the e-news and newsletters for the schedule of future presentations. Whether you’ve played golf for 1 year, or in my case for 55 years, you will find the presentation informative and it may just help improve your enjoyment of the game. Two of the subjects reviewed during the presentation are the proper way to repair a ball mark and the proper way to rake a sand bunker. Rick uses some excellent short videos prepared by

the USGA during his presentation. Enjoy our golf course – consider sharing the experience with your friends, relatives, and business associates. Talk to Rick about the current Guest Fee Promotion. Thanks, and Happy Golfing.

SENIOR MEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION

The SMGA tournament season has started. Our 2-day member/ member tournament was played in May, with the team of Ed Kaiser and SJ Park our winners. We also had a ringer award go to our winning team of Len Strobel and Gus Conley. The member/guest tournament has also been played, with this year having 2 individual day tournament winners. Day 1 winners was the team of Ed Kaiser and guest, and day 2 winners was the team of SJ Park and guest. In our 1 hole shootout, the team of Ed Kaiser and guest won. The President’s Cup (Match Play) tournament has started and, like last year, is a double elimination tournament. The matches will go through the summer and by September, we will crown our champion. Always a great event, the Ladies invite the SMGA was a big success. The turn-out was close to 40 players with good golf, competition, and a fantastic lunch. Thanks to the Ladies for another great event! Hopefully, we can make it on the ladies calendar of events for next year. We continue to have a good year in growing the SMGA. We have 10 new members, and 3 more potential members. Thanks to our membership team! For our members who are still working, just a reminder, we now have tee times starting at 4pm every Thursday for 9 holes, and an SMGA tournament the 2nd Sunday at 1pm of every month, which is open to all SMGA members. We remain a strong supporter of the USGA “play it forward” initiative. Earlier this year, with the help of the pro shop, some of our members began using the gold/white tees. In the month of June, a group started using the blue/white tees. We continue to look at ways to keep the game fun and improve the pace of play. The SMGA Supper Club had their last dinner of the season in June and will start up again in September. As advertised, this has been a “fine dining experience”. Many thanks to Michele Flynn and Joann Mayer for taking the lead and working with Don Hunter, Chef Jimmy and all the members of the club staff in making this so successful!

WGA NEWS

Greetings WGA! At last we have found some good golfing weather. I hope more and more of you can get out to play on our playdays. We have lots of members and still few players. I am proud to announce our new Queen Bee for 2014. Linda Johnston put two great rounds in to become Queen Bee and win the coveted visor. I hope to see her wear it on playdays! We had a great event with our SMGA and NNGA comrades after being rescheduled due to bad weather. Despite being a bit cloudy, the day was perfect. I heard great comments from everyone, especially about the lunch. Thanks to Susan Weidener and Kathleen Lessard for putting that together. After much discussion and USGA officials marking legitimate drop zones, the WGA will allow the use of drop zones on our official playdays. Craig’s staff will be making these visible so you may start using them and post your scores. Th e drop zone on #8 that is to the right of the pond is NOT legal. The legal zone is on the left hand side of the pond about half way down the bank walk. Again, drop zones are just another option if you hit your ball into the water. They are not mandatory. You still have the other options of hitting from the previous spot, 2 club lengths from red line, going back as far as you like with the crossing point in line with the pin, etc. Our play with the pro clinics have been rescheduled for Tuesday July 15th and Saturday July 26th. I encourage you to sign up for these days and take advantage of Sally’s on course knowledge. It’s a great time to get tips on difficult shots or questions about rules. That’s it from here. Please send comments and feedback anytime. And remember; keep your head down on putts!

Diane Koenigshofer WGA President NIFTY NINERS NEWS

The Nifty Niners hosted five other clubs in a TRI-9 event on April 24th. Twenty-one Nifty Niners participated. We had good weather and a wonderful luncheon following play.
