It’s taken a while, but Spring has finally arrived! With the warmer weather, we are expecting to see much more action around the Club. The new Friday night buffet has started, which always draws a crowd, Tuesday Night men’s golf will be kicking off soon, and before you know it, summer camps will be in full swing! If you have not yet gotten involved in Club activities, now is the perfect time to do so. This month we will be having our first Clubopoly Day on Tuesday, May 20. Th is is the time that you can come out and spend all of those dollars that you have been earning the past several weeks. The staff will set an exchange rate for your Clubopoly dollars, which will be announced in advance. For instance, if 1000 Clubopoly dollars is equal to $10, it means that if you come out on that Tuesday with 5000 Cluboply dollars, you essentially have a $50 credit that you can use in the Golf or Tennis Pro shops, or in the Food and Beverage department. You can also come out that night for a special dinner buffet and play the Clubopoly board game! At that time, you will have the opportunity to roll the dice and buy properties. If you don’t want to wait to play the game or you simply prefer luck of the draw, you can blindly purchase property cards. Once you collect all of the properties of one color, you get a choice of one of the prizes listed on the card! If you have not gotten involved in the Clubopoly madness yet, you are missing out! But don’t worry, there is still time for you to earn dollars and have a chance at winning prizes. It’s easy to earn, as you are rewarded for just using the Club on a regular basis. Make a reservation for Sunday brunch by the Friday before and you collect 100 Clubopoly dollars. Bring in a guest for a round of golf and collect 200 Clubopoly dollars. Buy a pair of adult tennis shoes and collect 200 Clubopoly dollars. It’s that simple! For a full list of ways to earn and prizes you can win, check out pages 8 and 9 of this newsletter. I look forward to seeing you around the Club! Mike Brogren

About the House
They labor in relative obscurity, our CHCC business office ladies, often only noticed, like sports officials or football offensive linemen, when they make what we members perceive to be a mistake. But they are vitally important (and rarely wrong). Without them, the Club could not function. Jean O’Daniel has been the Club’s leading-lady-of-the-money for years. She came to CHCC in the seventies and in the early days was instrumental in helping the Club through some very hard, and dangerously lean times. We could have gone under. But Jean, and a few key members, kept that from happening with their unselfish contributions and work. Now Jean is leaving her position as Club controller. She will be sorely missed. Jean is a native of this area. She went to Chapel Hill High School, just a few short years ahead of me. When I returned to Chapel Hill in 2006, after being gone almost 50 years, I discovered Jean, here at the Club. I hadn’t known her in school, but we shared many mutual acquaintances and she delighted in bringing me up to date on what had happened to them. She made me feel I wasn’t returning to an alien place by offering me a touch of the familiar. Few people, if anybody, have given more than Jean O’Daniel to Chapel Hill Country Club. If you didn’t get a chance to thank her for what she has done for us (she will have retired by the time you read this), it’s not too late. Jean enjoys member status, and will be returning on occasion to enjoy the Club, as a member. She has been one of us for over 35 years. And she will continue to be for years to come. P.S. If you want to read a longer and more detailed piece on Jean, go back to a recent CHCC e-newsletter and read what Julie Aridas wrote. It’s outstanding. Larry Cheek, House Committee Chairman.
Special Message from Jeff Earley
It is with mixed emotions that I write my final column for the Chapel Hill Country Club newsletter. For those who have not yet heard, I have accepted a job as the Assistant General Manager at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh. My family and I are very excited about this new opportunity; however, it saddens me to be leaving a place where I have spent the last 13 years with you all. I have worked in two different clubhouses (and the tent in between) and seen the improvement of Golf, Tennis and Pool facilities. I met my wife here, and have since brought my two children to a variety of family events at the Club. I have learned so much during my time at CHCC, lessons which I know will benefit me greatly during my future in club management. Please know that each of you has contributed to my development as a manager, and I appreciate all that you have done for me. I know that it will be strange each day driving past the Oaks and not making the turn into work, but I am sure that I will still be seeing you all around town. Thank you all again for the chance to grow with you! 4

On the monthly Clubopoly Day, you can purchase rolls of the dice, and if you land on a property, you may buy it for the listed price (just like the real game). For example, if you land on Newcastle Drive and the price is $140, you can pay the bank $140 and get that property. 2. Come see the Banker on Clubopoly Day, and you can purchase property cards at random. However, you will not know which properties you’ll get! For instance, if properties are $100 each, you can give the Banker $500 and get the 5 property cards from the top of the stack, which could be any properties from the board, all different or even multiples of the same one! 9

Adult Spring Team Challenge Results
For the first time in what seems like forever, we had a perfect turn out for this event with 12 men and 12 women participating in this “Davis Cup” style adult social. Add the absolute gorgeous weather, and it was a perfect day for this event! Th anks so much for all those that participated and made it another success. With 24 players, we were able to create four teams of six to play with a total of 6 rounds and 36 total games played by everyone. With each game won resulting in a point for your team, every game truly mattered! In the end, only 1 team is able to come out on top and this year, that winning team was the “Australian Open” team of: Jimmy Rosen, Brian Jenkins, Steve Akiyama, Susan Beatty, Andrea Kottong and Julie Vozella. Thanks again to everyone and congrats to our champions!

CHCC Junior L4 Championships: Results
On April 18 - 20, Tennis Director and Head Tennis Professional Lindsay Benton of the Chapel Hill Country Club hosted his 26th Annual Junior Level 4 Championships. Despite the tournament falling on Easter weekend, 166 junior players from all over North Carolina registered and competed in their respective divisions. In order to help with the demand of the 237 total matches, the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department allowed Lindsay Benton and his staff to use the six hard courts at Ephesus Tennis Park as well during the weekend. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate during the weekend as rain began to fall Friday night halting 10 matches and canceling all of Saturday’s matches, making for a longer day of tennis on Easter Sunday. Due to the cancelled day of matches, the majority of Sunday’s matches were play with shortened sets to help complete the tournament. Overall, what an exciting weekend of tennis at the Chapel Hill Country Club and everyone looks forward to next years Championships. Many thanks to all the players who competed and to all the parents who drove them back and forth to the sites for all the matches. A special thanks to Lindsay Benton, Derek Boone, Jarrod Randle, Jaime Montalvo, and head USTA referee Joann Hundley as they ran another successful junior championships and to the sponsors: Chapel Hill Country Club, Chapel Hill Parks ad Recreation, Seagroves Insurance, Top of Th e Hill, Th e Loop Pizza Grill, Time Out Bar & Grill and Serafina’s Pizza. In 2013, I was ranked #143 in the Boys 10s and unranked in Boys 12s. Currently, I am ranked #129 in Boys 10s and #260 in Boys 12s. What do you do each week here at CHCC to improve your game? Each week I practice my serves, play in 2 days of clinics and take 2 lessons a week. Do you have dreams of playing high school or college tennis? I hope to play in college some day. Any other activities you do during the week? Nothing else but tennis! What’s your favorite food? Pasta. Who are your favorite tennis players, besides the CHCC pros? Roger Federer and John Isner. ALL the pros here at CHCC are so very proud of the effort Thomson has put into his tennis game this past year. He has grown leaps and bounds in our junior program and probably has the best attitude on and off the court of any junior here at CHCC. We look forward to watching Thomson progress with his tennis game….CONGRATS Thomson!! 12
Memorial Day Adult Round Robin Monday May 26, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm; $10/person
“King of the Court” format. The pros here will assign the players their doubles partner for the first round of action by making sure that each court is as close as possible to equal in ability. The winning doubles team will move up a court and then spilt partners, while the losing team moves down a court and does the same. This gives a great chance for members to truly mix it up with everyone on the court and have a great time. Refreshments will be provided for the event and included in the price. Remember to stay afterwards and enjoy the lunch buffet (member charge) for all those out at the Club enjoying the festivities. Please sign up with the Tennis Pro Shop.
July 4 Adult and Junior Round Robins 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, $10/person
We had a successful event last year hosting two separate round robins for adults and juniors. We will have divisions for all to play in, but all children in the event should be able to serve, rally and keep track of score. Last year we had over 20 participants, so let’s be sure to keep the numbers high once again this year. Remember to stay afterwards and enjoy the lunch buffet (member charge) for all those out at the Club enjoying the festivities. Contact the Pro Shop to sign up for this event by calling or via e-mail. Prizes will be awarded for 1st place teams.
CHCC Jr. Championships August 29 - Aug. 30
All juniors 6 years old and above who can rally and keep score are encouraged to play; this includes ALL Quickstart Junior Players from the spring season. There will be singles and doubles for this tournament. Players will be placed in divisions based on ability level and be assured of playing at least two matches. In each event, matches will begin Friday afternoon after 3:00 pm and conclude Saturday afternoon with a cookout and awards ceremony to follow. All interested juniors should contact the Pro Shop to sign-up at 932.2855 or via e-mail at jmontalvo@chapelhill-cc. com. We will include a separate Quickstart 8 and 10 tournament during the weekend on the hard courts and possibly on the clay courts. Juniors: do not delay in signing up for this event!
Labor Day Parent/Child Round Robin Monday, September 2, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm; $10/player
This has always been a popular event with great participation. Junior participants must be 8 years of age and above and be able to serve and keep score. Adults interested in playing should contact the Pro Shop in the event that we have juniors who need an adult partner. We will have the Quickstart format for those kids who are 10 and under once again this year. We would love to see ALL 14 courts used this year for this fun event! Three divisions (Bronze, Silver and Gold) will accommodate various ages and abilities. Pro Shop gift certificates will be awarded to the winners of each division. Drinks will be provided, with a member charge lunch available after the completion of the round robin. 13

New for 2014 - Junior Golf League
We are proud to announce that we will be participating in the area’s PGA Junior Golf League this year for Chapel Hill Country Club juniors 13 & under. What is the Junior Golf League? It is a part of the PGA of America’s way of growing the game that the staff here at CHCC are proud to be a part of. This team will be comprised of 12 junior golfers that will travel to play 9 holes against another area team, also part of the Junior Golf League. There are currently 12 other clubs in the Raleigh/Chapel Hill/Durham area that will be potential opponents and the group is growing in popularity. Our hope is to build a strong junior program and keep this moving forward for years to come. Format: 2 person captain’s choice scramble/match play. The league will consist o a guaranteed 4 matches played and at least 1 - 2 home matches. Kids who are 13 & under are eligible to play. Teams: The maximum amount of players per team is 13 and 12 will play in each match. Matches: Matches normally begin between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm. During the matches, at least one parent is required per group to act as a scorer. The season will begin sometime in late May and end at the beginning of July. Upon completion of the season, depending on the success of the team, there is potential to travel for sectional, regional and national championships around the country. Pricing: The cost per child is $225. This will include 4 matches scheduled by the PGA Junior League and Team Captain, a team jersey with a number on the back, a CHCC Junior League hate, a series of 3 practice sessions and a private lesson with a member of the professional staff. Golf Committee Comments
Senior Men’s Golf Association
Rick Brannon, CHCC Golf Professional Terry Barker, Committee Chairman Henry Essey (Gross Group/The Tradition) Joe Vozella (Sunday Morning Group) Diane Koenigshofer (WGA) Kate Eifrig (Nifty Niners) Gus Neville (MGA) Terry Flynn (SMGA) James King (Dogfight) Linda Johnston
We have added 10 new members so far this year. Welcome to our newest members. On Sunday, June 12, we will have a golf event inviting all of our new members to participate and giving us all an opportunity to get to know each other (1:00 pm tee time).
The members of this year’s committee are listed below. Please feel free to provide any comments or recommendations you might have to any of the committee members.
With the weather improving and the golf course “greening up”, we hope to see more members participating in the scheduled golf events. Keep an eye on the Club newsletters, on your e-mails, and on displays at the Club for information on upcoming events. The MGA had their initial 2014 event this past Saturday and the participation was very good – “Thank You” to all that attended. Pick a partner and join us in the Member/Member tournament scheduled for May 3 and 4. Th e Member/Member is one of our major Club events and we encourage both male and female golfers to join in the fun. Th e cost of the Member/Member has been reduced to $40 per player and will include breakfast each day of the tournament. In May, we also have the Memorial Day tournament scheduled for the 26. If you want help finding a partner, give the Pro Shop a call. To improve your golf experience at CHCC we are supporting the USGA initiatives “While We Are Young” and “Play It Forward.” Rick has prepared an excellent presentation that addresses these topics. Our goal is to have all CHCC golfing members attend one of the scheduled presentations and we are off to a good start with 136 golfing members already attending a presentation. If you haven’t been able to attend a presentation yet, keep an eye on the E-News and newsletters for the schedule of future presentations. Whether you’ve played golf for 1 year, or in my case for 55 years, you will find the presentation informative and it may just help improve your enjoyment of the game. Last but not least - share our wonderful course with your friends, relatives, and business associates. Talk to Rick about the Guest Fee Promotion that was initiated this month. Thanks, and Happy Golfing! The Golf Committee
The Tradition
The men’s Member-Guest will be played June 26 - 28. We are still accepting completed forms for this special event. Th ere are about 10 spots still available, so if you want to play, sign up in the Golf Shop ASAP. Please keep in mind the field is limited to the first 60 teams and we not accept forms unless they are completely filled out!! The cost will be $800 per team. The Tradition match schedule will be as follows: Thursday, June 26: Practice Round in the morning and Match 1 will begin at 3:00 pm Friday, June 27: Matches 2 and 3 Saturday, June 28: Matches 4, 5 and Playoff to determine overall 2014 Champion
In March, the SMGA officially launched our new season with our opening day breakfast and golf. The weather cooperated and a fun time was had by all.
Our dues remain $25 annually, and for non members still undecided about joining the SMGA, it is a small investment for enjoyable golf and socializing. We have launched the SMGA Th ursday afternoon 4:00 pm 9-hole golf event each Th ursday. Members who can’t make our Wednesday morning playdays, and non members who want to get to know us, now have an opportunity to play some weekday golf and have some fun. We also started our Sunday afternoon SMGA tournaments in April. Th e 2nd Sunday of every month starting at 1:00 pm, the SMGA will have an 18-hole Sunday tournament. All members are invited to play. We recently began the SMGA version of FedEx point system, where you collect points for playing in our events and points for winning. Extra points are awarded for participating in our major events. There will be a playoff in October to determine the champion. May is a busy month for tournaments and events. May 29 we are invited to participate in the Ladies invite the SMGA. Members should be reminded, your spouse or significant other does not have to play to sign up. You can sign up using our electronic sign up on our website, and enjoy a fun round of golf and a great lunch. May 7 and 9 we have our Member/Member team event. Our 2 chairmen have added some new things, so sign up now. If you don’t have a partner, the Pro Shop will be happy to help match you up. May 22 and 23 is the SMGA Member/Guest tournament. Th is year we will have individual tournaments and winners each day, with activities and events for the spouses and significant others to participate in. The event will conclude with our banquet. Please check our website for more details on all of our events and information: www.smgagolf.com. Terry Flynn SMGA President

WGA News
Greetings! As I write this article, I am watching the final day of the Masters. I find myself in awe of these professionals that can hit their tee shots in the woods or into the spectators and still get on the green in regulation. What I noticed is their calm demeanor and I urge us amateurs to follow suit. Rather than being disgusted with your poor shot, clear your mind and get yourself out of trouble. And trust me, I am speaking from experience. Okay, enough advice from me. What an incredible opening day we had: beautiful weather and a great turnout of 22 WGA women. Have a heart was the format enabling Nell Laton, Carol Harrell, and Joann Mayer to win their flights. Congratulations to a great beginning. Our next playday did not see the great weather, and on our Camaraderie Day with the NNGA to boot. Despite the sloppy, soggy course, 11 ladies braved the course and took home a bottle of wine for their effort. The highlight of the day was our delicious lunch, which was very well attended by both organizations. Rick Brannon gave his presentation on While We’re Young, which I found very thought provoking. You can go to the USGA website (usga.com) for more information. Thanks to Susan Weidener and Kathleen Lessard for organizing this event. I would like to welcome our newest WGA members: Linda Butler, Maggie Morris, Nicole Lake, Mary Moore, Cathy Fields, Susan Halter and Debbie O’Rourke. I look forward to playing golf with you all. Please sign up to play in our upcoming events. We have the Queen Bee in May, which is a two-day event occurring on consecutive Tuesdays. You get to try and better your score on the second day and record the best score of the two days. And if you can’t play both Tuesdays that is okay, just play your best on the one-day. On Wednesday, May 28 we will have our regular play day due to the course being closed on Tuesday following Memorial Day. Fun Club events coming up are: Member/Member (May 3 - 4) and Member/Former Member or Member/Future Member (May 16). I encourage the women to make a showing and represent our organization. And last but not least this year’s Carolina Classic will be held on Thursday and Friday June 5 and 6. This is a women’s member-guest and the most fun event in history. Fun captain’s choice format with an awesome Cocktail Party on Thursday night. Please contact Suzanne Kozel to sign up (suzanne.kozel@embarqmail.com). Lots of great things coming up. Can’t wait to see you on the course! Cheers! Diane

Nifty Niners News
Thus far, the winter has been very uncooperative for playing NNGA May/June 2014 The golf season is upon us. We welcome our two newest members; Sema Lederman and Karol Wenner. The Nifty Niners had a very good turn out of 23 players who participated on our opening day. Th e winners for low net were: Barbie Dalton, Karen Lazarus and Patricia Van Hoy. We joined with the WGA on April 8 for Camaraderie Day. We had 11 brave players who slogged through 9 holes of golf. Th e course had received 2¾ inches of rain the day before! Golf was followed by an excellent and well attended lunch organized by Kathleen Lessard and Susan Weidener. Thank you both! April 10 was low putt day. Susan Weidener (12) and Patsy Huff (16) won for fewest putts. Events in the near future are: NNGA Clinics on May 7, 14 and 21, Tri-9 Inter Club at Treyburn May 15, Ladies invite the SMGA May 29, Th e Carolina Classic June 5 and 6 and Tri-9 Inter Club at Brier Creek June 12.
