Great news - if you have not already heard, our very own 10 & Under Intermediate Tennis team won the Southern Section Junior Team Tennis Championships last month! This was the first ever Southern Sectional Championship title for CHCC’s junior tennis program, but with the way Lindsay Benton and staff have been cultivating the program, I am sure that many more will follow in the coming years! It is a truly wonderful thing when you see members taking ownership of their club. First we had the playground, and now we are moving towards another great member-initiated project, the renovation of the cart path along the first hole! I would like to take a moment to update you on the status of these great initiatives. The Playground Committee has been hard at work - so far, they have raised around $50,000! Over 70 families have given to the project, and more contributions are coming in each day. The ultimate goal in regards to a new playground is to create a safe and durable commercial grade youth activities area that is contained and also aesthetically pleasing. In order to achieve this goal, we need to have at least $70,000. Therefore, you will continue to see fundraising efforts on behalf of the playground, until we can be certain that we will be able to provide the Club with the best possible playground that meets all of the criteria. If you have not yet given to the Playground Fund, there is still time to give! Contributions can be made via check (memo: Playground) or be charged to your member account. The other project, currently in the beginning planning stages, is to redo the cart path along the first hole from the staging area as far as funds allow! One member has already pledged $6,000 towards this initiative, and there has been interest among many others. Look for more information about this project to come out this fall, as we move into more detailed discussions about cart path renovation. In no way do you have to give to a project that you are not passionate about. These are simply two projects that members saw a need for, and took it upon themselves to get the ball rolling. I know that there are many of you who have ideas about improvements that you would like to see made at the Chapel Hill Country Club, and we would be happy to listen to them. If you have an idea for a project like those currently underway, please contact either myself or Don Hunter. We would be glad to schedule a time to sit down together and discuss your thoughts. And remember, there are other ways that you can get involved besides projects of this nature. Each time that you purchase merchandise from your Golf or Tennis Pro Shop, you are supporting your Club. When you cater a party through or host an event with us, you are supporting your Club. CHCC is what you as members enable it to be!

A H This isn’t exactly a House issue, but let me ask you golfing members something. How many times have you had to hold off hitting a shot because some non-golfer is jogging, wandering, walking, strolling or meandering on the course in front of you, apparently oblivious to the true function of a golf course? Too many, would probably be your response.
Now answer this. Do you know what you’re supposed to do in such a situation? The answer is not yell, jump up and down, gesticulate wildly or ignore them and tee off anyway. No, you should call Don Hunter, our congenial but hardnosed-ifhe-has-to-be general manager. And let him take care of the problem. The other day I saw a jogger on No. 11 while I was playing 18. I told Don about it when I got in. He said he’d just returned from a visit with the jogger and had told him the purpose of a golf course was golf, not jogging, and would the jogger have gone onto a football field to jog while a game was in progress? Of course not.
It’s not just joggers. Several months ago we had to delay our tee shots on 18 while a whole family gamboled on the fairway. They must have thought the course was a park. Last month my foursome was preparing to hit on No. 9 when I noticed a young woman walking down the cart path toward us. I took immediate action by standing with hands on hips and staring at her, figuring she’d be gone by the time I called Don. The tactic worked. She sped up and disappeared into a yard on the left side of the fairway. The rule is simple. The golf course is for golfers and others who have a legitimate reason to be there, such as maintenance workers or club staff. Doesn’t matter if you’re a member (who tend to be the most difficult to reason with). You still can’t jog or wander on the golf course. So stay off. And just maybe you won’t get hit by an errant shot from a golfer who didn’t see you.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIPS
The week of August 6-11, the Cary Tennis Park hosted the NC State Closed tournament and CHCC had the following 12 juniors competing during the week: 8 & Under Oliver Narbut Avery Tortora Addison McGrath
10 & Under Ryder Jeske Cody Benton Jonathan Baddour
12 & Under Lauren Baddour Annika Narbut Madeline Towning Kate McGrath Hunter McGrath Samantha Benton
RESULTS
8s – Oliver Narbut is your 8 & Under State Champion! He defeated CHCC’s own Avery Tortora….in her very 1st tournament. This is the 2nd year in a row that CHCC has had the top two 8 & under players in the state. 10s – Cody Benton and Ryder Jeske finished in the top 16 with both of them losing to tough seeded players. Jonathan Baddour was battling an illness and had to withdraw from the singles, but battled his way with Ryder Jeske in a tough 1st round match of doubles. Cody and his partner Josh Mayhew lost in the Quarterfinals of the doubles draw. 12s – Madeline Towning and Lauren Baddour both finished in the top 32 in singles. Annika Narbut was a Semi-Finalist. Annika Narbut WON the Doubles 12 & Under Championship with her partner Sophia Strugnell. Lauren Baddour and her partner Madeline Towning lost in the Quarterfinals of the doubles to the eventual Champions of Annika and Sophia. 8
A BIG CONGRATULaTIONS goes out to our very own 10 & Under Intermediate team as they have WON the Southern Section Junior Team Tennis Championships! This is the first Southern Championship for CHCC’s junior program….but we hope it’s the first of MANY!
They finished 3-0 in their Round Robin on Friday and Saturday defeating Mississippi on Friday 39-6; Tennessee on Saturday 34-16 and South Carolina 37-14. The team finished with an overall record of 110-36 in total games won in their flight. The most games you could win in a match is 40, so our juniors certainly played their best tennis of the season! Sunday morning they played against the team from Georgia for the Championship and ended with a 34-22 overall win and the Championship! We cannot be more proud of this team with the way they competed in each match at the State Championships in Fayetteville and again in the Sectionals in Lexington, SC. Of course we would not have had this opportunity if we did not win the local league. Not every player on the team was able to play at States or Sectionals, but they ALL contributed to this team’s success! This team consisted of: (those in bold played at Sectionals) Thomson Falk, Helen Newcomb, Carter Myers, Jonathan Baddour, Maddie Moore, Oliver Narbut, Cody Benton and Caroline Sun. We had a substitute player from Hollow Rock, Samantha Slowick, join the team and she certainly made a huge contribution as well.
THANK
YOU TO ALL THE PARENTS AND PLAYERS FOR A WONDERFUL END TO THE SEASON!

2014 JUNIOR GOLF CAMPS!
The 2014 Junior Camps were a huge success and a step in the right direction. The kids learned the basics of golf and had fun at the same time! The campers practiced full swing by hitting balls at the range picker, chipped tennis balls at Velcro targets, did a miniature putting course inside that weaved between all the downstairs banquet rooms, and even played a few holes out on the course. We can’t wait to see everyone again next year and hopefully some new faces, as well! If you have any questions please contact our Junior Golf Director, Evan Lease, at (919) 932-2845 or at elease@chapelhill-cc.com.

SMGA NEWS The weather and vacations have made for a quiet summer in the SMGA. Our President’s Cup tournament (double elimination match play) continues, the winner should be crowned in September. Good luck to the remaining players. The SMGA championship tournament will be held in September and is a 2 day event. The “SMGA invites the Ladies” is also in September on Friday, the 26th. This has been historically well attended and always a good time.Let’s continue that this year with a strong attendance. Our communications director is working with the WGA, NIFTY NINERS and the Pro shop to make sign up easy and centralized for everyone.
WGA NEWS Greetings, my long lost WGA friends. I say this because I haven’t been around much, therefore, not playing much golf. It was been a hot and somewhat wet summer, but let’s hope for better weather as we enter fall. The course is in excellent condition. The fairways are a luscious green and the greens are smooth (when everyone fixes their ball marks!). Sally put on some good clinics for us. I attended the bunker play and wow, what an improvement...well until I go away from Sally and had to do it on my own! I guess I need a refresher course. We have one more clinic scheduled for Thursday, September 4 at 6pm on short irons. I encourage everyone to take advantage of Sally’s knowledge.
The 2nd Sunday of every month tournament is gaining some momentum with 21 players participating in August. Hopefully, our working members and new members who don’t always get the opportunity to play in our Wednesday play date will take advantage of the Sunday golf to have some fun and meet with the members. The Thursday 4pm, 9 hole tee times have not taken off, and we will focus our energy in the 4th quarter to spread the word and see if this is worthwhile to continue next year. The Senior Supper Club will start again on September 21st, and continue on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Look for the September menu soon.
Terry Flynn SMGA President
We also have our big Triple Play Golf event scheduled for Friday, September 12. As you might remember, we have combined the Nifty Niners and the Beginning Golf Group to increase our camaraderie. This event was well recieved last year and I hope many of you can play this year. Gail Ferreira, Kelly Ross and Starr Basmajian have been working hard to put together a very lovely event. The SMGA will be inviting the ladies on Friday, September 26. This is a 9am shot gun start, playing captains choice for 9 holes. The men really treat the ladies well, so come on out and play! And lastly, our year will be coming to a close with a 9-hole outing and lunch to follow on closing day, Tuesday, October 28. We will be awarding all the end of the season prizes so even if you can’t play golf, try to come to the luncheon. As always, sign up under our google docs. Thanks for a great year!

As Summer draws to a close and Fall approaches, I want to comment on the great condition of our bent grass greens this summer – thank you to Craig and his staff. All golfing members can help protect the quality of our greens by properly repairing your ball marks, as well as any other ball marks you notice. If you haven’t attended one of Rick’s “Membership Awareness” presentations, please plan to attend one in the future to ensure you are using the proper technique to repair ball marks. Rick’s presentation also includes a review of the proper way to rake sand bunkers, as well as information on the USGA’s initiatives “While We’re Young” and “Play It Forward”. Let’s all do our part to maintain the quality of our golf course. The schedule for future presentations will be included in the club newsletter and/or the weekly “e-news”. There are still many golf events on the schedule for the balance of the year, including: September 12: WGA Triple Play October 6: CHPD / CHFD Appreciation Tournament September 13: MGA monthly event October 11: MGA monthly event September 17 & 19: SMGA Championship November 1 & 2: CHCC Club Championship September 26: SMGA Invites the Ladies Ron Merritt has joined the Golf Committee and has volunteered to chair the Handicap Committee. It is always disappointing to see healthy greens punched but, it is necessary for their long-term health. You will notice new fans being installed over the next couple of weeks. We purchased 4 old fans at a discount from Governors Club this month. One will go on #12 green and the existing fans on #9 and #18 will be replaced with quieter, more effective models. Craig’s staff has also been busy with a number of small beautification projects around the course; sodding around #15 tee and #6 rough, mulch behind #6 green and left of #5 tee. In addition, weak areas in the collars have been repaired with sod. Several bumpy cart path spots (ex. between #12 green and #13 tee) have been patched up and we plan to get to others in the near future. To continue improving the course, the Greens Committee has unanimously supported a “Collar Dam” project. “Collar Dams” are the areas around our greens where the fringes have built up and don’t allow water to drain properly. Last fall, Craig renovated the back-right and front of #2. The results have been great. This fall, Craig is going to renovate several other holes where collar dams have developed. The project will start in September and consist of stripping the fringe and a small section of the green, removing excess soil then replacing with bermuda and bent grass sod. Because these areas are a transition between the two grasses, there is a small window when the weather is right for the renovation. Unfortunately, some of this work will create disruptions in play. Craig has committed to working with the Golf Shop to minimize the impact on golfers and tournaments. And, his work should be minimized to one or two holes at a time. But, because of the priority of this project and the narrow window of time that he has to work with, it will most likely impact some of our rounds this fall. Please keep this in mind this fall and follow the Golf Shop’s direction to allow Craig’s team to work as efficiently as possible. In closing – a friendly reminder – repair ball marks, rake traps, and fill divots!!! Thanks and good golfing!
