The Chapel Yearbook is a project designed by students for the school community. The students invested a lot of time and energy to plan, create and produce the pages in an attempt to capture this year’s best moments, memories and events.
This year the seniors chose the Olympics as the yearbook theme. Our team enjoyed the process of researching facts about the origins of sports, uncovering stories from centuries and decades past about the Olympics and its athletes. They based their research on a variety of websites: www.olympic.org, www.buzzle.com, www.bwfbadminton.org, www.rugbyfootballhistory.com, www.diving.isport.com, and www.scholastic.com.
The yearbook pages aim to inspire the whole community to tap into their own passions. After all, if you try your hardest, you could be a gold medalist!
We hope you enjoy the yearbook as much as we enjoyed being a part of this amazing project. The Yearbook Team

Track and Field
The Olympic Games began in the year 776 BC according to the first recorded history of the games; however, it is believed the games were occurring long before that time in affiliation with religious festivals held in Greece. In the first official Olympics, Korobius, a cook from the city of Elis in Greece, ran around 200 meters in the present-day Track and Field category and became the first competitor to win in the Olympics Games.
The Olympics was an enormous and prestigious event where only wealthy males and leaders could go and appreciate. In A.D 394, Emperor Theodosius I banned the Olympics stopping the competition of Track and Field until around the 12th Century.

Track and Field
Track and Field truly developed in the 19th century in England when schools and universities promoted the sport to their students causing it to gain popularity. In 1849, the Royal Military Academy in England organized the first large-scale Track and Field event of the modern times, and although Track and Field was not as famous before the 1860’s when compared with other Olympic sports, its fame rapidly grew after this time.
In 1866, the newly formed Amateur Athletic Club opened the first English championships to all “gentlemen amateur” athletes who would not receive any financial compensation for their efforts. The sport gained even more fame after the USA started to invest in Track and Field by creating their own Amateur Athletic Union in 1887. This development by the USA eventually led to the nation’s complete domination over the sport.

Track and Field
1896 marked the first modern Olympic Games after which Track and Field became an international sport for the first time by capturing the imagination of athletes. By 1913, the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) was formed by athletes from 16 countries. Beginning in 1921, 6 countries allowed women to participate in the sport, and many more countries embraced the spirit and added women’s sports as well. Once the IAAF officially allowed women to participate in the sport in 1936, athleticism became an “any gender” concept in the Olympics.

Badminton
Badminton originated in ancient Europe and Asia over 2000 years ago. Previously, the game was known as “battledore and shuttlecock” using the same equipment: a bat or paddle and a shuttlecock (also called a “birdie”). In the past, badminton was an elite-class game in England and other countries in Europe when it was simply hitting the birdie back and forth with a simple bat as many times as possible without letting the birdie hit the ground.

Badminton
As the game of badminton developed, a more contemporary form emerged called “poon,” and it was played in India where a net was added to the court, and the new rules dictated the birdie could not hit the net or the ground. British officers in the mid 1800’s took the game back to England where it grew in popularity. It was introduced to the guests of the Duke of Beaufort at his stately home “Badminton” where its modern name originated.

Badminton
In March 1898, the first open badminton tournament was held, and the following year the first English championships were staged. Denmark, the USA, and Canada liked the sport and started to take it seriously during the 1930’s.
Badminton is a relatively new sport in the Olympics joining its first Olympic Games in 1992. Then, in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, mixed doubles were included as an event of badminton where men and women could play together; this is the only event like this that exists in the Olympic Games.

Archery
Archery is a sport using a bow to shoot arrows at an intended target. The word archery comes from the Latin “arcus” which means “bow” or “arch.” Archery is one of the oldest sports that is still practiced, and it is closely linked to the development of civilization. That is because archery was used for hunting and for warfare throughout civilization’s history. It was the favorite sport of the Egyptian pharaohs during the 18th dynasty (1567-1320 BC), for example.

Archery
Some of the earliest recorded archery tournaments took place in China. In 1200 BC, the Hittites and Assyrians wielded their bows and arrows from chariots becoming formidable opponents in combat. They constructed their bows in a new curved-shape design using tendons, horns, and wood. This made their bows compact and more powerful which was easier to handle for an archer or bowman on horseback. The evolution of archery, as a cultural advance, is comparable to the discovery of fire and the invention of the wheel.

Cycling
There are 4 kinds of cycling: BMX, road cycling, track cycling, and mountain biking. Road cycling has proven to be incredibly popular ever since bicycles were invented in the mid-18th century; it has been featured in every Olympic Games since that time. From 1880 to 1900, it grew in popularity both in Europe and the USA. Track cycling is cycling on wooden indoor tracks, and the sport regularly drew large crowds as early as 1870. Its events have been organized at all the editions of the games since 1896, with the exception of the 1972 Olympics in Stockholm when only the road race was staged.

Cycling
Mountain biking was born in the 1970s, developed as a form of downhill racing. Taking a bike off-road was nothing new, as evident with the development of track cycling, but the development of a new bike that worked well with an outdoor type of terrain was new. Bikes made for mountain biking have fatter tires, rapid-shift gears, special brakes, and ground-breaking suspension. It quickly became popular, and the sport was finally added to the Olympic Games in 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

BMX biking was developed in California in the late 1960s inspired by motocross. In the decade following, its popularity grew, and an International Federation was formed. Not long after, at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, the sport was officially added to the program. Numerous spectators are drawn to these unique cycling races; there are eight competitors on a BMX track maneuvering through tight bends, obstacles, and jumps. The sport of cycling in all forms is for thrill-seekers looking for speed!

Diving
In the beginning of diving before it became an official Olympic sport, people would jump from bridges, rocks, cliffs, and the lake, and competitions were held to see which diver could glide underwater the farthest after plunging head-first from various heights. Hundreds of years later, diving evolved to be a unique sport where you needed skill, grace, courage, and strength to perform these tasks. Diving is a mixture of gymnastics and ballet performed in the water. In the late 1800’s, diving was called “fancy diving” because of all the spins they would do. People who performed and watched gymnastics and ballet where elegance and skill are combined became captivated by the sport because of all the spins and agility the athletes need.

Diving
In the 1904 Olympics, men’s platform diving and plunging were the two diving competitions, and at that time, the USA and Germans were the only teams competing. The first winner of diving in the Olympics was an athlete from the USA named George Sheldon; however, Sheldon’s title had controversy surrounding it. The Germans in this event performed more difficult dives, but they would crash on their stomachs whereas the USA executed a graceful plunge, but with less difficulty. Spectators thought what mattered was the degree of difficulty compared with the actual performance of the dive. Since that time, athletes have evolved in skill, and the scoring has developed to incorporate multiple aspects of the dive.

Rugby
In the beginning of this sport, people would make their own rules which usually consisted of grabbing the ball, running, and waiting to get tackled. In the ancient Olympic Games, the Greeks would play a game similar to rugby that was called “harpastum,” and the game had set rules. There were teams of 27 players who can use both feet and hands to score. Goals were scored by throwing the ball over a designated spot on the perimeter of the field. The playing field was a giant sand pit with a goal running the width of each end. There was a main referee, six linesmen, and a field master. Each game was played out for 50 minutes with the winner being the team with the most points or “cacce.”

Rugby
The rugby of today kept a lot from this original game that was mostly played in small Greek villages. Now, rugby has an official rules book that contains more than 150 rules. Rugby was always a really strong and popular sport in the Olympics ever since its inception in the 1896 Olympic Games. Rugby has an interesting history in the Olympics because of the racial segregation that occurred in the sport’s history, specifically involving South Africa and the Apartheid. Ultimately, players and spectators fought for equal representation in the sport, and thus the segregation was lifted.

In this sport’s competition, there are three types of weapons: foil, sabre, and epee. Women athletes competing in this sport could only use the foil while men could use all types; however, in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, epee competitions for the women’s category were introduced. Women’s sabre competition finally appeared in the 2004 Olympics. One of the most famous athletes in fencing is an Italian named Nedo Nadi who is the only fencer to earn a medal in all three categories. Nedo Nadi competed in the 1912 Olympics at the age of 18 and won in the foil. Then, he fought the First World War and came back eight years later and won five more medals in single competitions and team events.

After its first appearance in the 1908 London Games, it was an immediate success and became a permanent sport in the Olympic program.

Water Polo
There are some skills and movements necessary in water polo: picking up the ball, passing, dry passing (which is when the ball does not touch the water), wet passing (which is intentionally passing on top of the water), shooting, baulking, and swimming with the ball. There are three special allowances for the goalkeeper in the sport: 1. they can punch the ball with a balled up fist; 2. they can touch the ball with two hands; and 3. they can touch the bottom of the pool. A goal is scored when the ball completely passes the two goalposts underneath the crossbar. There are some specific types of equipment needed for water polo: the ball, mouth guard, swimwear, and caps that protect the head and ears as well as identify team members.
Gymnastics can be divided into 3 parts: artistic, rhythmic, and trampoline. Artistic gymnastics first emerged in the Athens Olympics in 1896, and gymnastics has been part of the Olympics ever since. The sport was originally from ancient Greece where philosophers advocated for strengthening activities like gymnastics to be performed as the perfect regulator between the mind and body.

Handball
It is now usually an indoor sport, but sometimes it can be played outside like it was when it first appeared in the Olympics, but only if there is a suitable court and location. In order to score in handball, a player needs to get the ball in the opponent’s goal, but there are some rules that make scoring difficult: players cannot use their feet to kick the ball and they cannot move more than 3 steps at a time.

Table Tennis
Historians predict the high society of England created the game of table tennis sometime around the 1880’s. A line of books would often be the net, the rounded top of a champagne cork would be the ball, and occasionally a cigar box lid would be a racket.

Today, the game has really developed since its beginning in the 1880’s; the rackets are made of special materials such as rubber and carbon, and the ball is made of light, stiff materials and can travel over 150 kilometers per hour in one smash!

Paintings and drawings in caves show people drew horses since 3000 BC, and the earliest record of horseback riding in the form of drawn evidence was found in a tomb in Egypt dated back to around 1600 BC. In those times, according to the drawings, Egyptians used horses to carry objects, as transportation, and as warfare objects for better mobility and speed.

Golf
Golf is a sport played with a collection of clubs and balls. The players use different types of clubs to hit small, hard balls into specially-made holes created on a large, outdoor course. Golf is one of the few sports involving balls that does not require a normalized, more confined playing area.

Golf
The golf course has nine or 18 holes. Each hole must contain a tee box (where players start the hole) and a putting green which contains the actual cup (or end point) of the hole. On the course, there are various types of terrain indicating locations of the ball: the fairway, which is the ideal place to have your ball because the grass is the smoothest; the rough, where the thicker grass lines the sides of the fairway; and the hazards, which are either water or sand where, if you ball lands there, you are penalized.

To Everyone: I want to thank all of you for understanding me and being friendly even though I was a boring, quiet guy. The four years I spent at Chapel were special for me. I have a lot to say, but unfortunately I cannot write a message for each one of you. I hope all of you understand that I have many more things to say. I’ll miss you all!
My Parents: Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity to study at Chapel School. Although I disappointed you sometimes, you kept helping me out and supporting me. Thank you for everything.
Angelo: I don’t know if you remember, but you were the first guy who talked to me when I came to Chapel in 9th grade. You taught me how to play Hearthstone for the first year. I’m way better than you now, though. (lol) Anyway, thank you, and good luck in Korea! Gui: Well, you were always sitting in front of me in Geography class and you actually made me laugh sometimes. I really liked having class with you. Pedro: You are such a nice guy! I liked seeing you and Joseph debating for some stupid reason. (lol) Good luck in college! Paulo: Such a smart guy. I could beat you only in Math... You are probably one of the smartest guys I’ve ever seen. I don’t know which college you are going to, but it’s going to be a great university for sure. Well, thanks for everything! Pietro: I think you were the one who talked to me the most during Senior year. I might not be able to play Hearthstone after going back to Japan, but I’ll try. Make sure to keep in touch, man. Let’s meet again someday! Daniel: Hello, Tristana player! Well, I still think that Tristana sucks, but it might be my misunderstanding. I really liked playing with you and hearing some baloney from you! I’ll miss you when I go back to Japan. Nicolas: Hey, Marin! I really liked talking with you. I’ll miss you so much! I’m not sure if we can play LOL together after going back to Japan, but probably in NA? Good luck in college! Nice “I got great endings, right?” (You know what I mean, right?) Adrian: What’s up, my friend? You made my English class so fun even when it was less than fun… Still, whenever you came up with a new way to greet, I was really excited to hear it. Well, if you find a new funny Dab, just tell me; I’ll be waiting for you. I’ll miss you so much. João Paulo: I still remember one stupid thing I asked you when I was in 9th grade. I asked you if you were Mongolian because everyone was calling you that. (lol) You were always nice to me. Thanks for everything, man! Leo: I didn’t talk to you that much, but you were always a perfect student in my mind. Good luck in college! Juan : Juaaan! Well, I think I’ll try to visit Mexico. Let’s eat tacos together someday! I’ll miss you! Cesar: My favorite DJ! I had so much fun at that hangout with your remixed music. Joao Carrete: I had fun playing LOL with you. I’ll miss you, man! Liam: It was so funny watching you say something to Juan in Geography class. Good luck in college, man! Bruno: One of the best sport guys I know. Good luck in college, and see you someday! Joseph: Whatever you said was funny to me. You made me laugh so much! Thanks for that, and I’ll miss you! Kenzo: You were very kind to me. Visit Japan someday; I’ll be waiting for you, man! You’re awesome. Max, True friends are those who stay with you during hard times. I believe you fit the description. Thanks for sharing the presidency of NHS w/ me! Mom and Dad: To the two people who made all of this real, in reality I would need this whole page to express how thankful I am for you. I could never have asked for more supportive parents who are always proud of me yet always pushing me to achieve my full potential. You are the most important people in my life, truly, and it is immeasurable how thankful I am to have this opportunity and to have such loving parents and a united family. I love both of you so much. I consider myself so lucky for having both of you as parents. You have shaped who I am, and all I can ask for is to be more like both of you. Forever my role models. Emi: I might not show it, but I love you, bro. Never forget that. You have good years ahead of you, so make good use of them. You never really appreciate something until it is over. Look around, and learn and shape who you are. Let Chapel help you become the person you always dreamed of being. Mate: Possibly my greatest role model. You taught me to always follow my dreams, to go against all odds in search of what I love, and to aspire to be a better person, to be who I am. Your wisdom has always driven me forward, and I only give you my full support. I want you to know that I love you. Gus: One of the greatest loves of my life, I have no idea what I would do without you. The love and happiness that you spread is incredible, and despite everything and everyone, I love you more than anything. Rafa: You are the most important person in this life. “Family” is too little to say how close I consider you. My best friend since always, I lost track of how many times I told you I loved you. No one cares or understands me so well. Your insecurities and problems are always something I will devote myself to solving, and all I want in this life is for you to be happy. You are in a confusing stage, but when you find what you love, a person as passionate as you are will surely be incredible in life. Rapha: It is impossible for a teacher to be more inspiring and honest. What I learned with you has shaped me as a person, and I will take that with me for the rest of my life. Pietro, Kenzo: The most loyal friends I clearly don’t deserve. You are always there for me, concerned and loyal. You make me realize what real friends are. João, Santi, Liam: My oldest friends, my love for you is unconditional, and I know that we will always be as close as when we were 4, no matter how distant we are in time or space. Dan: One of the most loyal and hilarious friends, always sincere and keeping the real people close. Moe: You are always who I look to when something funny happens, especially when Dan is involved. Will: One of the friendliest people I know, making you laugh with my yawns makes my day. You are the guy who loves his friends the most just like I love you, bro. Mongus: It is always hilarious to fight or argue with you. All I remember is having fun with you, bro. JUEN: Be it lack of sleep or food, your expressions made my day. Joe, Gui, Drinho: You guys always make any situation funnier. With me since always, school wouldn’t have been the same without the experiences we shared. ninbabylindapucci90%: Joyful and playful, I love talking to you about surf, skate, wake. I don’t think I’ll meet someone as huggable and affectionate as you. Adrian: Good laughs with Dan and you. Léo: Always hilarious and smart. Tiago: “If you need some extra help, well, I can help.” - Drake Paulo: Keep surfin’ Helen: The person I am the most comfortable around. Always thoughtful, open minded and intelligent. I really hold you high. Class of 2016: 3800 characters is too little. I love all of you and I know we will all have bright futures, and when they coincide, we won’t be short on memories to share. Find what you love, find your meaning in life, and follow it to the end. All the rest is irrelevant. Be happy.

Zzzabri: Sardina! Como has crecido! Cuidate mucho enana. Kiep: Man, I cannot thank you enough for sticking with me in those tough times. I hope I can return the favor! Remember, brothers before those bloodsuckers. You are one loyal vixen. Daniel Meireles: I think this guy is the funniest, weirdest person I know. Take care, get freaking fatter or die trying, and please make the greatest video game ever. Japes: Take lots of care, Justin. Loyal vixen, too. Gui: You will forever be the biggest streetwalker in town. Los Nerds: I love you guys. Max: Maxine Drizzy Drake, take care! Bruna: The haaandsomestt girl! Any time you need some help in Math, tell me! Viera: Love our infinitely sarcastic talks! Also, just want to let you know that you are the nastiest human being I’ve known. Helena: We never talked much, but stick to the things I’ve told you, wifey… I meant every word! Chiquita: Loyal and true friend! Love you! Mr. Murphy: Believing in me was not the wrong thing to do. Sorry for the disapointments; I will overcome everything. Thanks for everything, Mister. Mom and Dad: Hard to know what to say to you except thank you. Thank you for everything: the support, help, and company. In fact, I have a lot of thanking to do but little space to write everything. Anyway, I wanted to tell you that I love you so much. Even through we sometimes fight, you are a source of inspiration and a safe harbor. Thank you. Juliana Malzoni: Ju, even though we had our our moments apart, I want you to know that the memories we made together will stay with me for the rest of my life. They were some of the best moments of my life. I will always admire you the way I first did when we met in Art Class. That slightly goth (just slightly), charimastic, charming, and welcoming Ju that I will always love. Rachel Bavaresco: Rach, seriously, that get together we went to when you first got in school was one of the funniest and best memories I have. From that point on, I knew we were going to get along really well. Seriously, I never thought I would meet someone with so many common interests. I’ll really miss you! I hope that we can still keep in touch and hang out while we’re both studying in California! P.S. I still don’t know if the guy killed the spider. Fernanda Alcantara: Fe you’re one of the funniest people I can gladly call my friend. You always have a way to make me laugh and make me forget all of the overdue work I have to do. I think I’ll have to hire someone at your college to distract you during a presentation with the mosquito sound because I’m not going to be there to do it. Maxine Fergie: Maxine Fergie, I love spending time with you. Hours pass by as minutes when I’m with you. I can honestly say that I’m going to miss you the most when we graduate. I hope that we can still keep in touch because honestly you’re a wonderful person, and we share so many common interests. I’ll miss our Miami memories. Paloma Batt: Palomaaa!! You are the most delightful person I know, there is just something about your bubbly personality that makes me want to spend enormous amounts of time with you. I’ll miss discussing with you the crappy TV Shows we watch. Kerlly Khoury: George e Ana Claudia 4 Life! I admire your positivity, and I’ll miss having you around. I loved going to the movies with you and Paloma. I’ll really miss you and I’m sure you’re going to be extremely successful at your job wherever you choose to study. P.S. we still have to do photoshoots hahahah. Bruna Karabachian: Bruna, first of all. I want to point out how excited I am to watch. “Keeping Up with the Karabachians.” I truly believe that you will be successful in any area that you decide to work in. You are extremely outstanding in anything you decide to commit yourself to. I’ll miss you. Sarah Vasconcellos: Sarahhh! I’ll really miss spending time with you in Art and Portuguese. You made boring days at school turn in to an awesome time. I can’t wait to see you win an Olympic gold metal in equestrian. Karen Khoury: Karen I’ll never forget when you hid behind me at Fernanda’s house because her Grandmother was shoving her dog in your face. Helena Scomparim: Helena, I’ll really miss you. To all my friends, fortunately everyone in my grade, I love you all so much. I will miss the endless laughter, the wonderful moments, and the way we are all so strongly bonded. I will never forget any of you and will keep every single one of you in my heart forever. Mudi: I will really miss the fun we had in school, the two of us always getting in trouble for the most ridiculous reasons. Liam: Thank you for the early high school years when you would go to my house almost every day to play PES 2010. It was really awesome. João Carrete: Hangouts would never be the same without you. The way you would flirt will always bring a smile to my face. Kenzo: Thank you for being a wonderful friend ever since my first day at Chapel, and even after I messed up, you gave our friendship a second chance. Pietro: All the fun playing League of Legends and trips to Tabatinga will be really missed. Will: Being able to make you laugh would make my day everyday. Pedro: You were a really annoying guy during high school, so I think you should apologize. Gui: Thank you for always being so funny and being a role model for all the guys when in Paineiras. Joe: Please behave, and make good choices. Cesar: You imitating Silvio Santos and Mickey would always bring a smile to my face. Kiep: Thank you for always being on my side when we played Mafia. João Costa: Remember to open your door for me in a couple of years when I’m a monster so I can beat you up. Léo: A really big part of high school for me was playing GTA V, DayZ, and Arma 3 with you. I will really miss those moments. Stefano: That time we went to Saga and became friends with those people was hilarious. Send Kate my regards when you two get married. Adri: You want me to throw a cup of water in your face? What a hilarious day! Tiago: I hope you become the biggest Bitcoin investor in the world and become a billionaire from it. Santi: You will always have the title of “cutest and most friendly guy” of the grade. Juan: When I become a monster, I’m going to rub my hand on your back as strong as I can so you see how good that burn is. Masaya: Tristana is the most broken champion in League of Legends. Angelo: Thank you for helping in my early days. LoL. Paulo: Ms. Giltner asked me to remind you to give her your History IA. Girls: Thank you for always spreading good vibes for everyone in school. If it wasn’t for you, Chapel would be a school just for boys.
Well, Los Nerds, I was really afraid and nervous when I was moving schools from Stance Dual to Chapel in 3rd grade. How could I have known that it would be the best life change I could ever go through. Every single one of you had a part in my youth. You were all like a big family to me. I really don’t know how I am going to make it without you guys. I would wake up every morning really tired and sad to have to go to school. Seeing all your faces everyday is what helped me get through it. Every single one of you has a reserved space in my heart, forever. It was an honor to be able to make you all laugh. Your smiles made me smile. I love you all so much.

I would like to use this page to thank all my teachers for all their help and all they have taught me.
Mr.Murphy: Words can’t express how thankful I am; neither can they express how much you mean to me. You were my only friend when no one else cared. You helped me see the world and see myself from a new angle. Our brief chats and exchanges in the hall always brightened up my day. Thanks for all the support and love.
Mr.Martins: In your class, I learned what culture, education, and intelligence really are. I want you to know you are my role model. To this day, I still do not understand why you chose to become a teacher, but I am thankful regardless.
Sir.Vaughan: I did not quite get to know you that well: first semester was crazy and second semester I didn’t care about school anymore. I want to thank you for the great time in your class. Thanks for being so REAL.
Mr.Gonsalves: I know I wasn’t always the easiest cup of tea. I’d like to apologize for the troubles I brought you, and thank you for putting up with me. At the end of the day, I would like to thank you for all the nice and sometimes not so nice but true words you’ve given me. Although it was less than a year, I am very thankful for having you as a teacher.
Mrs.Vieira: Your Math class was by far the hardest class of my high school career but also one of my favorites. I would always look forward to going to your class. I had lots of fun and learned a lot. You are one of the most knowledgeable teachers I know. You were always so friendly and generous. Thanks so much for all the support. Hope I got the 7 I promised you.
Mrs.Smith: Although you were only my teacher for a year, you were always someone I looked up to. I was excited when you picked up the Knowledge Bowl team. I had a great season, and I was honored to work by your side. Your class was by far one of the most interesting, and it helped me decide my second major: literature. Thank you so much for all the wise words and support. No matter where I go, I’ll keep trying to be as positive as Gabe.
Mr.Kantor: Our time together was very short. It was only a semester, but it was an honor. Your disposition to help your students is unmatched. Thanks a lot for your wise words.
Mr.Padilha: Your energy and smile always made your class so interesting and pithy. Your spirit and costumes always lightened up my day. Thanks for always being so great.
Mr.Kuroiwa: I have told you many times how great of a teacher you are. You’re one of the sweetest teachers I have ever met. You are so friendly and caring. All of this reflects on how you treat all your students. When I am a Chemistry teacher, I’ll use you as a model. Thanks for all the help, support and love. Hope I got the 7 I promised you.
Sir.Rombaut: Although you abandoned me after a year, I’m still very thankful for your teachings. Your class inspired me to take the exam for World Religions. Your smile always brought happiness to wherever we were, although it didn’t come out that often. Thanks for being such a great and accepting teacher, coach, and person. You’ll remember me. *Cheers* to the most handsome guy in school.
Mrs.Julia: I know it must have been hard to have someone like me on your team, and I want to thank you for taking care of me when I needed it. I had an unforgettable, amazing experience and it’s mostly thanks to you. Thanks for believing in me when no one else did, not even myself.

Take care and know that I’ll always be here for you. Love you. Fe B: Chinny, I will miss you so much! Enjoy your last year and visit the Fuin! Love you. Kiep/João: For some reason I’ll miss both of you making fun of me for everything that I do! Good luck in college; I’m sure everything will turn out great! Rach/Ju/Fe/Sarah/So: I will miss you all! Thanks for all the laughs, trips, and special moments. JoaoV./ Santi/Mudi/Dan/Stef/Ti/Liam: I enjoyed the long time studying together. Good luck with this next phase, and wish you all the best. Bê: Take care, little bro, and enjoy your remaining time at Chapel. Class: My second family, I wish all of you achieve your dreams! Thank you for all of these incredible 15 years; I will never forget all the funny and special moments. I never imagined that we would be as united as we are today, and that just makes the “goodbye” harder. Class of 2016, see you at our reunions. Love you all.

Vininho: Words can’t explain the bond we have, the connection we share. Only those who are lucky enough to have a sibling can understand it, and even in this group there are only few who are as blessed as I am to have a brother like you. I truly hope that your 4 remaining years as a Trojan are as amazing as mine. Enjoy not having anyone to bump into you in the halls. Lele: I have two older sisters, and yet you managed to play the sister part better than they did. Most of my high school experience is owed to our very entertaining “saídas”, especially the ones that end with us seated at a random street corner at 6am talking about the highlights and mistakes of the evening. I am most definitely proud to call you my best friend. Love you, bebe. Max: I will miss you so, so much when you’re gone. I hope your college life in the USA is everything you want it to be and more. One more thing: thanks for financially supporting me all these summers in Miami, reminding you, once again, that it was against my will. Fam: I honestly have never connected as much with a group of people as I have with you guys. Even though we are all going different places in the world, I hope our friendship still lives on and that you all are there for me on Sunday mornings when I need some counseling from the previous night. Love you so much. Mudi: I am so thankful to have a friend as great as you, always patient when listening to my random rants about life and making me laugh about it later. I know your future is so much brighter than you plan it to be. Pedro: I see so much potential in you, and believe me, Drin, you will go very far no matter what you end up doing in life. I can’t wait to make fun of your baldness during college. Joe: I am so relieved that the suffering you put me through every day is finally over. Just kidding, over the years you have become a brother to me. Gui & Will: I am so glad that you guys will stay in Brazil. I honestly can’t picture myself going through college without your wonderful smiles to keep me happy. Sarah: Real eyes realize real lies! Don’t forget Villa on Wednesday. Paloma, Ke, Karen: I am so happy to have been your friends, and I will miss not seeing you every day. Ju,Fefe: My friendship with both of you goes way back. I hope we continue to be friends, and I wish you guys nothing but the best in college. Kiep: Manda... Ms.Moro: You were undoubtedly more than just a teacher; you were a mentor. French wasn’t the only thing you taught me in the past few years. Thanks for everything. Mr.Martins: I was lucky enough to not only have you as my teacher, but to have you appointed as my advisor. You are probably the best teacher I have ever had during my school years. Ms.Paladini: Your class managed to be the highlight of my day. One more thing: please skip “the true story behind Nemo” part of the class when teaching your future students. Class: You were not only a very great group of friends, but you guys became my family as well. I wouldn’t have made it through all these years in school if it weren’t for the friendship we all had. I wish nothing but the best for you guys in your future careers.

STUCO
Advisor: Ms. Maxine Baines
Executive Officers: Pietro Guglielmi, Joseph Saab, Mohamad Mourad, and Kenzo Takano
This year we learned that being part of StuCo can be very challenging. To ensure success we needed to collaborate and communicate clearly with one another, as well as invest time and energy to plan and execute all the StuCo events throughout the year. We encountered many challenges concerning our limited budget, however that did not stop us from starting projects and creating fundraising opportunities, such as the Book Sale, the Hunger Games at the International Festival, and the Festa Junina activities.
StuCo also organized a new event in High School: the Chapel Music Festival; which was so successful that it made a certain Howard Murphy emotionally happy. We discovered crazy talents and amazing people. We kept up with the traditional 7th Grade Fun Night, the Pep Rallies and Bake Sales, which gained us great trust from the administration. Running the Snack Bar was also one of our responsibilities, and also an opportunity to interact with students from all grade levels.
From all of these achievements StuCo had, there is one thing in special that I think we did that I had never seen before: we became a sort of family in the end, always willing to cover each other’s backs- to compliment people on their efforts, and celebrate our personal and collective successes.
Our goals for next year are to continue implementing projects which encourage school spirit and also create new channels of communication within our community; so that the student body can express their suggestions, ideas and concerns in an authentic manner.

NHS
The National Honor Society (NHS) is a service organization that acts to make the school community more active in relation to real world problems. In NHS, students are actively engaged with their fellow student body as well as the community through various projects that aim to benefit of both parties. Chapel’s chapter of the National Honor Society serves as a means to connect the faculty, students, and community leaders to accomplish these projects such as a Community Blood Drive, Winter Clothing Drive, Workers’ Breakfast, and others. The activities the NHS organizes are fundamental to the development of its members’ character and leadership skills as well as their collaborative skills. In order to become a member of the NHS, one needs to consistently demonstrate the four main NHS traits: Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service.
NjHS
In the second year of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Chapel School, group members, along with their advisor, Mr. Érico Padilha, had the privilege to work together to create projects to benefit not only the school but also people in need. With the “Food and Clothing Drive,” together with the National Honor Society, NJHS helped the school collect food and clothing that was later donated, and with the Halloween Candy Grams, the group raised hundreds of reais for the next project: the Second Annual Movie Night! The Movie Night is an event brought to the Chapel community by NJHS, in which the community is offered the opportunity to watch a movie on the field with their families and friends. It’s a perfect chance to have fun and enjoy the school!
One of the most important moments NJHS had this school year was the Induction Ceremony when the group officially welcomed new members. Another important event was beginning the Selection Process that helped the group pick the most qualified students for next year’s NJHS. However, the most important moment is, without a doubt, the meetings when the group gets to discuss projects and think about ways to help the community.

BRAZILIAN INDEPENDENCE
model united nations
MUN is the acronym for Model United Nations. It is a group of students that simulates the United Nations goals of solving worldwide issues. There are 8 committees that constitute MUN: ECOSOC, Security Council, Political Committee, Human Rights, Legal Committee, and 3 special committees that differ each year.
This year, MUN members participated in 4 different conferences: THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations), SPMUN (Sao Paulo Model United Nations), CHAMUN (Chapel Model United Nations), and BRAMUN (Brazil Model United Nations). For the first time ever, Chapel MUN participated in THIMUN, which was held in Montevideo, Uruguay. The group also hosted SPMUN at Chapel where Chapel MUN’s president, Juan Jose Juarez Vignon-Whaley, was the Secretary General of the conference. CHAMUN was a special conference that sought to accustom new members to the MUN environment. Last, but certainly not least, BRAMUN, held in Bahia, amassed around 15 schools for a 4 dayconference.

The Knowledge Bowl is an interdisciplinary academic competition that takes place once during each semester. Chapel competes against other schools from across Brazil, Chile, and Peru.
This year’s Knowledge Bowl season was quite strenuous but also rewarding. The students travelled to their first competition at ISC (International School of Curitiba). The team’s first few matches at this competition were great! They swept almost every team. Chapel then went to Semi-Finals where they eventually lost by one point, ultimately taking fourth place.
The second tournament was at EARJ (Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro) where Chapel competed as a 4-man team. They defeated all their rivals beating both teams that took from them second and third place at the last competition. In addition, they defeated their longtime rivals, Graded. It was amazing! In the end, Chapel was tied for third place with Graded and EARJ, and after official meetings and reading of the rules, Chapel was awarded fifth place. All in all it was a good hustle, and in the end, the group is proud of their achievements!

ES OUTDOOR SCHOOL
Outdoor School trips in the Elementary School were opportunities for fun learning for everyone! The first grade classes visited the Pullman Factory and were impressed by the huge machines that make the bread. Students experienced the step-by-step process of making different types of breads, cookies, crackers, and cakes. All classes learned how important the Pullman Bread Factory is in our community. Also away from the everyday classroom cenario, second and third graders had exciting experiences learning about alligators and other animals, open-air geography lessons, and finding dinosaur fossils. At Sítio do Carroção in Tatuí, they were able to explore trails and go through caves. This amazing resort provides so many different learning situations, in both academic and social-emotional areas. As for fourth, fifth and sixth graders, Republica do Lago, also known as Replago, was the chosen destination for outdoor learning and fun. In the city of Leme, the camp has a beautiful lake and lots of field games for the children to practice their CARES skills. This year we had special activities at American Football, Master Chef, Biology, Arts and Crafts, and more.
TALENT SHOW

high school art
The 2015-2016 school year had some truly amazing moments for the Arts program at Chapel. We displayed exhibitions throughout the school, and we even had a photo contest sponsored by Photoarts where students had their photos printed and exhibited! In the Brazilian Program Art Interventions students from 9th and 10th grade constructed incredible masks inspired by the genre of drama as well as charcoal drawings and watercolor paintings which were inspired by the book Capitães de Areia. Our students also produced amazing canvasses that exceeded expectations: self-portraits with mirrors from 8th grade, Singing in the Rain-inspired paintings from 7th grade, and color schemes paintings from 9th and 10th grades. IB Art students had amazing experiences with their individual productions that resulted in a one-of-a kind art show exhibition. Last but not least, their trip to Inhotim was once again responsible for creating memories that they will carry for the rest of their lives. I am very proud of our incredible student artists! Congratulations to all!

CHAPEL SCHOOL OUTREACH
To quote a trite expression, “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words” is particularly apt for the Chapel School Outreach Program. The photos in pictures one and two are the 9th grade girls preparing and decorating Easter Boxes for the Chocolate Easter Egg drive. Julia, Julia Tolda, Alva, Giovanna, Livia, Fausta and Renata used their talent and enthusiasm to make the event extra special. In Photo #3 Mr. Han, several teachers and children from the Maria Helen Drexel Institution happily show some Eggs that Chapel delivered and donated for a Happy Easter. Photo #4 is a partial view of the 688 chocolate Eggs that Chapel students donated for the yearly Easter Egg Drive from ECEC, Elementary and High School. Photo #5 is a photo of the SHARE Organization delivering Easter eggs that Chapel students collected and asked them to distribute. Photo #6 are happy children showing their appreciation and delight with their new gifts. Photos 7-12 are a series of moments of the elementary students sharing their time and singing talent at the Ondina Lobo Home. The third grade class participated in a Christmas visit to bring good cheer, deliver cards and food to the residents. These Outreach projects are just a sample of the activities that Chapel students are involved in throughout the school year. It is with pride and honor that we teach our students the value of service and commitment to others.

CARES
C.A.R.E.S. – Each Friday, mixed groups of Elementary students from 1st through 6th grades meet to learn and practice the CARES standards. CARES stands for Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self-Control. This year, students learned about responsibility and assertion. The semester ends with a whole-school assembly to showcase student learning. This year, a student-led flashmob about responsibility and a student-made movie showing assertion in action enriched the assembly program.
Advisory Program
Advisory Program – Advisory is a “break” from high school students’ busy and demanding academic routine to reflect on their lives, personal actions, community needs, and cultural diversity. In a 30-minute weekly meeting for students in grades 7 through 12, the advisory group creates a trusting community while discussing real life themes and situations like responsible use of internet and citizenship.
Creativity, Activity, Service
CAS – CAS is an avenue for IB students to showcase who they are to the world. Through the Creativity, Activity, and Service Program, 11th and 12th graders personalize their learning and create a portfolio of their extracurricular achievements. Students are encouraged to reflect on the projects they initiate and improve their 21st century fluencies such as creativity, collaboration, solution, and media fluency.
GIN Conference
GIN – Chapel school took three groups of students to this year's Global Issues Network Conference in Rio de Janeiro. At this conference in October, these students had the opportunity to present to students from all over Latin America their social and environmental projects developed throughout the school year to improve the community. They also attended lectures from keynote speakers such as Vik Muniz, Binka Le Breton and Bela Gil. Chapel students presented the following projects:
- E-Bench: a solar-powered bench which allows you to charge your cell-phone while seated outdoors.
- Maria Alegria: a series of planned activities aimed to bring joy to children fighting cancer.
- Clube da Saúde: health awareness lessons for underprivileged children and teenagers at a local orphanage. GIN members are now ready to develop and apply new ideas to contribute to our society and to engage other students in their quest for a better world!
