DAXING NEW TOWN WEST BEIJING, CHINA

A CITY QUARTER NEAR BEIJING’S NEW AIRPORT. Chapman Taylor won a competition to design the western district of Daxing New Town, in the southern suburbs of Beijing. The winning concept creates a 1,380-hectare innovation zone for Daxing New Town which will strike a balance between the requirements of urban and rural areas and will blend with the surrounding natural environment in a context-appropriate way.

18

This mixed-use district, the design for which is now in development, will include residential buildings, shopping centres, entertainment venues, cultural amenities, offices, co-working spaces and hotels, within a landscape defined by beautiful parkland and lakes.

CULTURE, LEISURE AND RETAIL WITHIN BEAUTIFUL URBAN PARKLAND. Sectors: Mixed Use, Masterplanning, Retail, Leisure Services: Architecture Client: Shenzhen OCT West Investment Co Ltd Area: 3.3 hectares Status: Masterplan Concept stage

20

Chapman Taylor, in collaboration with Martha Schwartz Partners, has created a masterplan for a culture and leisure-led mixed-use district and a landscaped public park at Shenzhen Bao’an in south-eastern China. The masterplan envisages a strategically well-placed central axis in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, just 40 minutes’ drive from Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport. The scheme will be a major transportation fulcrum for major roads, pedestrian walkways and an underground metro station. The project, located on the waterfront of Bao’An Bay, will create a large, naturefriendly space, surrounded by cultural

and leisure facilities, which will link Shenzhen’s international finance hub to the coastline and Bao’an Central District. A beautiful, 1.7-hectare landscaped park will form the spine of what will be a vibrant area of retail, F&B, leisure and cultural amenities. The porous edges of the park will create an open and seamless connection with the surrounding urban fabric and provide easy access to the metro station and to the 1.6-hectare underground shopping centre and parking space. Multiple waterways will run through the scheme, serving to create diverse, lush habitats and microclimates in the form of canals, rivers and a wetland delta.

During wet seasons, the waterways will capture, clean and recycle rainwater, while, during dry seasons, they will become part of the event plaza. The landscaping continues into the underground spaces, helping to create a visually unified space. The environmentally sustainable design ensures excellent integration with the wider urban landscape and seamless links with existing transport networks. The result will be a relaxing and popular cultural and leisure destination for Shenzhen which will inspire and surprise.

LIANGJIANG INNOVATION ZONE CHONGQING, CHINA

Chapman Taylor won a major international design competition to create the urban innovation zone on a 680-hectare site at Chongqing Liangjiang. Liangjiang has been chosen by the Chinese government as a developmental ‘new area’ for Chongqing, which has a population of over 30 million people and is one of China’s four centrally governed municipalities. Chapman Taylor’s masterplan concept is based on the integration of the beautiful natural environment with new technology facilities, and creates a connected series of five university campuses surrounded by R&D clusters. The organic form of the campuses follows the undulating contours of the existing site, producing a dynamic combination of urban spaces. The valley formed by the hills to the east and west perimeter of the site is to become a lake. At the northern end will be a national laboratory and the ‘Centre of Ideas’, a place which is the collaborative heart of the masterplan.

The south of the lake is surrounded by beautiful landscape interspersed with social, sports and cultural villages, which are a contemporary interpretation of the traditional villages of the region. The masterplan is a fully transitorientated development and provides railway, metro, BRT, electric bus and water taxi connections throughout the site. Sustainability is embedded in the project, which is planned to be self-sufficient in energy needs – using solar, biomass and hydroelectric power sources, resulting in a saving of over 450,000 tons of CO² per annum.

SA PA

LAO CAI PROVINCE, VIETNAM

A CULTURAL AND ECOLOGICAL TOURISM RESORT WHICH WILL BOOST THE LOCAL ECONOMY. Chapman Taylor’s context-sensitive masterplan for the Sa Pa resort in Vietnam’s Lao Cai Province creates a major cultural and ecological tourism destination for northern Vietnam. The planned development will offer luxury hospitality for travellers in a beautiful hillscape setting, including comfortable resort residences and a wellness centre which draws architectural influence from the local area. It will also provide agricultural and medical research facilities, while a central retail area will offer a market outlet for the local H’Mong hill tribe to display and sell products and food, helping to boost the local economy and showcase local history, traditions and culture. The project is located on a unique site with a diverse terrain of rugged

24

mountains, hill terraces and protected natural forest. The beautiful views will help to reinforce a strong sense of place and make Sa Pa an attractive destination for tourists from across South-East Asia and beyond. The resort will help tourists to engage with, and experience, the rich culture and way of life of the H’Mong tribe, while creating new opportunities for the people who live in the area. Also included in the environmentally responsible scheme are a community development centre, a bamboo preservation area, schools, a hospital, roads and public infrastructure. The result will be a thriving and vibrant resort which offers mutual benefits for both tourists and the local people.

THE SENSITIVE REGENERATION OF A CENTRAL QUARTER OF THIS HISTORIC CITY.

Transforming a central quarter of the historic city of Aachen, the regeneration of Altstadtquartier Büchel involves the provision of residential apartments with views of the town hall and cathedral spires, among a mix of other uses. The design connects the area with the rest of the historic city centre seamlessly, blending well without being a pastiche.

LUGANG XI’AN MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT XI’AN, CHINA

A MIXED-USE RIVERSIDE GATEWAY FOR THE FASTEXPANDING CITY OF XI’AN.

Chapman Taylor won an international competition for a major 300,000m² mixed-use destination in a strategic location facing the Weihe River in Xi’an. The project is situated on two development sites within the redevelopment zone of Xi’an international port and will create a unique range of cultural, convention, hospitality, workplace, entertainment, retail and sports functions.

A simple steel bridge structure at third floor level, inspired by the industrial character of railway bridges, will connect all five blocks. The concept was developed in consultation with the University of Bristol and Bristol City Council to ensure that the needs of students and the city were uppermost in the design’s evolution. The proposed development will relieve some of the housing pressure on residential areas in the city and provide high-quality accommodation and shared facilities in a superb location.

This luxury residential development at Mustaqillik Avenue in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, will be up to 12 storeys in height, providing elegant and spacious living for businesspeople and those who seek a well-located and exclusive address in the city. Façades are designed to be elegant and contemporary, with light colours balancing the building’s strong expression to create a sense of the cool and refreshing, which will

SOLIDARITY TRANSPORT HUB

AVIATION

WARSAW, POLAND

AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WHICH SERVES AS A POLISH NATIONAL SYMBOL.

Chapman Taylor created a concept design for the proposed new Central Transportation Hub (CPK) between Warsaw and Łódź in Poland, which is due to serve as a major multi-modal aviation and railway interchange serving 45 million passengers annually when it opens in 2027. The concept envisages a six-level structure, called ‘Solidarity Transport Hub’, which will offer a new template for transport interchanges – creating an exciting, curated experience which will be proudly rooted in its location and offer a popular destination for travellers and non-travellers alike.

The design of the internal hierarchy of uses is inspired by the six main landscapes of Poland: Baltic coast, lake district, valleys, uplands, plains and mountains. The focus of the hub is a circular dome, the circle symbolising the unity of Poland and the connectivity which is at the heart of our concept.
