Alongside international names, Diffusion will showcase Welsh talent. The 2013 festival programme includes internationally acclaimed contemporary artists such as Maurizio Anzeri, Edgar Martins, f&d cartier, Helen Sear, Tim Davies and Gideon Koppel, and important work made in Wales by renowned photographers such as David Bailey, Peter Fraser, and Philip JonesGriffiths. A special project ‘European Chronicles’ will feature a new generation of photographic artists from both Wales and places as far afield as Lithuania, Poland, Italy, France, Germany and Norway. There are opportunities for creative participation for people of all ages, including artist talks and workshops, a PhotoMarathon, an independent Publishing Weekend at Chapter, schools’ programmes and photographic rambles around the city. The Diffusion website is an exciting interactive platform enabling visitors to Cardiff and others around the world to join in the festival activities.

Diffusion: Publishing Weekend Book Fair, Symposium & Artist-led Events Sat 25 + Sun 26 May

This programme of events, organised through a partnership between Ffotogallery and Chapter, focuses on publishing — from artists’ DIY activity through to larger, established publishing houses, magazines and galleries.

Publishing Fair Sat 25 + Sun 26 May 11am — 5pm, Stiwdio

The publishing fair welcomes all to celebrate, explore and engage in a wealth of international contemporary book arts and print practice. FREE

Photobook Symposium Sun 26 May 11am — 5pm

Music Zine event Sun 26 May 5pm

This event will open up creative dialogue and enquiry into documentary and art photography publishing today, with a lively programme of presentations and panel discussions. Bringing together photographers, publishers and other industry specialists, debate will centre around shifts in publishing as practice, private vs. crowdfunding and available distribution models.

To complement Diffusion Festival’s Publishing Weekend, Shape Records and Chapter present a programme of performances from bands and artists who have self-published zines as part of their practice. There will be a live zine created at the event that audience members can contribute to — with photos, thoughts, drawings, etc — and take home at the end of the evening.

Gideon Koppel: B O R T H Wed 1 — Fri 31 May Chapter Stiwdio B O R T H is a film installation filmed in the west Wales’ town of Borth — a curious and extraordinary place where the infinite horizon of the sea collides with a bricolage of architectures; where epic landscape is playfully juxtaposed with the intimacy of human gesture. Following on from Koppel’s feature-length film Sleep Furiously — one of the most critically acclaimed British films of 2009 — this work travels along the blurred borders between documentary and fiction, to create a powerful dream-like and sensory world. Koppel’s work as an artist and filmmaker has been broadcast internationally and exhibited in galleries including Tate Modern, London and MoMA, New York. His feature film Sleep Furiously, with a soundtrack by Aphex Twin, was nominated for the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival and won the 2010 Guardian First Feature Film Award. Koppel is Professor of Film at Aberystwyth University and an Associate Fellow of Green Templeton College, University of Oxford. This is a Ffotogallery exhibition presented in partnership with Aberystwyth Arts Centre and Chapter.

Maurizio Anzeri: It’s Not Too Late It’s Only Dark Wed 1 May — Sun 30 Jun Maurizio Anzeri’s first solo exhibition in Wales features newly commissioned and previously unseen works, alongside a selection of his critically acclaimed ‘photosculptural’ pieces. Anzeri uses found photographs and embroidery to create subtly sculptural pieces in which strangers are given new identities; complex and mysterious. Anzeri sees photographic portraits as landscapes, exploring them in order to layer them with his own maps or orientation to invent what he describes as “other possible evolutionary dimensions for the people pictured”. Labyrinths of forms and colours create intriguing geographies of faces, histories and souls with eyes that stare enigmatically from the centre of their ‘masks’. Alongside this established practice, Anzeri will show new works that utilise embroidery and personal photography to create imagined or psychological space; private reality that becomes public fantasy. Anzeri’s interest in the sculptural form, the body and identity, gender and psychological boundaries, also extends to a series of morphologic sculptural pieces that are made from synthetic hair. Taking inspiration from multiple sources — from Virginia Wolfe’s Mrs Dalloway to totemic cultures, 17th century Versailles and haute couture fashion — the installations involve the creation of a series of sculptures — each representing a different personality — that hover somewhere between theatre and fetish. This exhibition is commissioned and presented by Chapter as part of Diffusion Festival.

Artist’s biography Maurizio Anzeri was born in Loano, Italy in 1969. He studied his BA at Camberwell College of Arts and an MFA at The Slade School of Art. He lives in London. His work is exhibited internationally and recent solo exhibitions include BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK (2011); ‘The Garden Party’, Q Forum, London, UK, ‘LUNATICO’, Rupert Pfab Gallery, Dusseldorf, Germany and ‘Darwin’s Tears’, Luce Gallery, Turin, Italy (all 2010); ‘I will buy the flowers myself’, Riflemaker, London, UK (2009). Group exhibitions include Shanghai Art Fair Guest Project, Shanghai, China (2012), ‘Version and Diversions’, Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin (2011) and ‘One Night In Paris’, The Photographer’s Gallery, London, UK (2009). His work is held in collections around the world including Saatchi, Gagosian, Rothschild, and the Collection of Alexander McQueen. A full biography is available at www.maurizioanzeri.net

Art in the Bar

Robert Kennedy Fri 15 Mar — Sun 28 Apr ‘Beer Street’ celebrates the virtues of the mildly intoxicating traditional national drink. Beer inspires artists and refreshes tradesmen and labourers. It can be drunk safely on rooftops James Towneley (1714–1778) Incorporating diary-like elements and marking time through practice, the work of Robert Kennedy is governed by environment; developing a loose archaeology of situation. In this exhibition, Kennedy recalls a scene from William Hogarth’s print Beer Street (1751) — originally produced as part of a campaign directed against gin drinking amongst the poor — in which a ragged artist, hooked on gin, paints a pub sign for money, habitually inserting the source of his addiction into the sign in the form of a gin cup. Kennedy, who himself has worked as a sign writer for many years, applies the same detail to produce rich, gilded glass works. This site-responsive exhibition weaves together a number of these processes and strands of pre-occupation — blurring the boundaries between life, art and work. The designs, hanging like horse-brass trophy ornaments in the bar, are derived from drinking detritus and the resultant delicate works echo oldstyle pub mirrors. Reflection, attraction and brittleness are recurring themes in Kennedy’s practice and this new exhibition raises a variety of questions relating to value, time and the human condition. For biography see www.chapter.org

Mike Tooby: At the Mad Shepherdess Performance: Sun 12 May 5-8pm Exhibition: Mon 13 May — Sun 19 May This project plays with our ideas of art history and museums, as well as how we relate to each other, as strangers, friends and neighbours. The Art in the Bar programme at Chapter — and the Diffusion Photography Festival taking place across Cardiff during May (see pp4-7) — prompted Mike Tooby to think again about Édouard Manet’s famous painting Un Bar aux Folies-Bergère (1882). The picture shows the reflection of a mysterious man meeting — or not — the gaze of a woman serving drinks. This encounter — and Manet’s interest in photography and modern life — also inspired Jeff Wall’s iconic photographic work Picture for Women (1979), at the time, an ambitious attempt to relate the artistic and spectatorial demands of the late 1970s to modernist pictorial art. Audiences are invited to ask the question: “What do I ever know about a worker behind a bar?“ and can participate by buying a drink at the opening; or by reconstructing the scene represented through the camera lens. For biography see www.chapter.org + Tue 14 May 6.30pm Come Along Do: Notebook on Cities and Clothes Post-film discussion with Mike Tooby and Gill Nicol. £2.50 (Tickets for the film must be purchased separately. Emma Bennett: Thief of Time

09

1 May — 30 June 2013

Biography

Emma Bennett’s hauntingly beautiful paintings contemplate space, time and the fragility of the human condition. Appropriating imagery from historical Dutch and Italian painting, Bennett immaculately renders bowls of ripened fruit, bouquets of blooming flowers, dead game and swathes of rich fabric that reflect this long tradition of still life painting — of apparent naturalism underpinned by compositional artifice, and of time suspended. Emerging out of the midnight–black void of her canvas, the subjects allude to the transitory nature of existence; to life, death and the after-life. In her latest work Bennett considers the ephemerality of imagery, memory and the desire to make these moments more permanent, and references the investigations of historic and contemporary still-life photographers — from Roger Fenton to Wolfgang Tillmans. Bennett illuminates the tradition’s darker side — through the use of allegory and in reflecting the poignancy of loss, and the poignancy of the futile effort to retrieve and retain, to freeze time and hold on to what passes.

Emma Bennett grew up in Brecon, Wales. She completed her BA Fine Art at Central St Martins College and her MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art & Design. She lives and works in London. Recent exhibitions include ‘And, Afterwards’, Charlie Smith, London, UK, ‘Kaliphilia’, Vegas, London, UK, ‘East Wing X: Material Matters’, Courtauld Institute, London, UK (all 2012); The Saatchi Gallery & Channel4’s ‘New Sensations’ and ‘The Future Can Wait’, Victoria House, London, UK, ‘Polemically Small’, Torrance Art Museum, Torrance, USA (both 2011); and ‘New British Painting’, Gallery Kalhama & Piippo Contemporary, Helsinki (2010). Her work is held in collections internationally including K & K Kollektion, Monaco; David Roberts, London and private collections in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, USA and the UK. Emma is represented by Charlie Smith London www.charliesmithlondon.com

Pop Up Produce

Thu 9 — Sat 11 May

Every Wednesday 4-7pm

We’re taking the first of our biannual trips to the beerkellers of Bavaria and, after the success of last year’s Oktoberfest, we’ve got a completely new selection of hoppy beverages coming over. We can’t share the full list quite yet, but it got our mouths watering already and we’ll get it up on the website as soon as we can so you can get planning! As usual, the café will be serving up tasty bratwurst to complement your beer and line your stomach.

Our regular pop up market features local food producers selling scrumptious artisan foods. Mark’s Bread off a host of your favourite loaves and speciality breads, Charcutier Ltd. bring the best of British, South European and North American cured and smoked meats, and The Parsnipship produce and sell unique and original Vegetarian & Vegan food using locally sourced seasonal ingredients.

Festival bar open: Weekdays: 5pm-close Weekend: 12pm-close

Eat There’s lots of great stuff to look forward to in the café over the next few months. We’ll be unveiling a scrummy new menu in early April and we can’t wait to hear what you think. Don’t worry — old favourites such as our homemade 100% Welsh beef burger are staying, but there will be plenty of new options to tempt you. We’re going all out for this year’s Art Car Bootique with a special art bootique menu — guilty pleasures such as chicken and chips in a basket served from the counter, our Burger BBQ out in the patio and our own stall selling snacks and beer. We’re also squeezing in more great specials — look out for fishy goings on on April Fool’s Day (or Poisson d’Avril as the French call it), veggie treats for National Vegetarian week (20 — 26 May) and lots of others.

August 012 Ltd Caligula

Waking Exploits Love and Money

by Albert Camus in a translation by David Greig Wed 10 — Sat 20 Apr (except Sun) 7.30pm

by Dennis Kelly Wed 10 — Fri 19 Apr (except Sun) 8pm + Sat 13 Apr 2.30pm

The senators are used to capricious emperors but this one really has gone too far. Gaius Caligula: the viper in Rome’s bosom. Megalomaniac, obsessive, tyrannical, yet strangely handsome. He executes citizens for entertainment. He takes unforgivable risks with the economy. He has just made his favourite horse senator. And now he wants the impossible. He wants the moon. Something must be done. Maybe after tea. In this absurd tragicomedy Albert Camus, one of the most significant writers and philosophers of the 20th Century, explores our fascination with excess and our thirst for the absolute. Brought to you by August 012 and directed by Mathilde Lopez (Serious Money, Pornography), Camus’ play is re-imagined in the celebrity driven world of Chavez, Berlusconi, Gaddafi and Hello magazine. This modern masterpiece is performed for the first time in Wales with an all male cast and supported by senior citizens from Ely, Fairwater and Grangetown. Supported by Arts Council Wales and developed in association with Chapter.

Jess loves David. Jess loves credit. Believing happiness can be bought in a world of easy finance and materialism, possessions become irresistible. But at what cost? Jess and David’s blend of love and money is killing their relationship, their future, and them. Funny yet heart wrenching, Kelly portrays a dislocated view of the world we live in, the risks we face, and the lengths we go to in search of happiness. Robert Newman’s New Theory of Evolution

Striking Attitudes Once Upon A Time In The Dark, Dark, Wood

Or The Survival of The Weakest Sat 6 Apr 8pm Rob tells the story of the 150-year controversy in evolutionary theory between cooperation and competition. It is a story that takes us all the way from Prince Kropotkin’s daring escape from a Tsarist prison, to Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show at the 1893 Chicago Expo. From the self-sacrificing amoeba, Dictyostelium discoideum, to the banking crash; and from capuchin monkeys endowed with an inalienable sense of justice, to the tragic suicide of brilliant evolutionary theorist and Manhattan Project scientist George Price in a Camden Town squat in 1974. Selection favours the weak and weird, Rob argues, every bit as much as the strong and the well adapted. £10/£9/£8

Winter Villains ‘February’ album launch + support from Joel Harries Sat 20 Apr 8pm Winter Villains are a six piece experimental chamberpop band. From their earliest recordings, the band quickly caught the attention of local and national press and earned praise from the likes of DJs Jen Long (BBC Introducing) and Tom Robinson (BBC 6 Music). Following on from their two singles ‘Moon’ and ‘The Air’, and appearances at various festivals including Hay and Sŵn, their debut album entitled ‘February’ is due for release on 22 April on Barely Regal Records. Joel Harries’ fragile and beautiful song writing creates a truly unique and captivating presence. £5/£4

Thu 25 — Sat 27 Apr 8pm Deep down in the dark, dark wood and further beyond in the sinister, brooding forest, secrets and stories lie, waiting to be revealed. Strangers search the tangled undergrowth for long forgotten things. But tread carefully — as the shadows shift and creak, who is watching and who is waiting? This is a unique and daring venture from Striking Attitudes that challenges conventional ideas about who gets to dance. A brave encounter between seasoned older dancers — skilled and experienced, but with their physicality contained and changed by time — and the fresh approaches of three young, visionary choreographers from Wales. £12/£10/£8

Edition Records presents Neil Yates + Five Countries Trio Sun 28 Apr 8pm Neil’s innovative Celtic-jazz fusions are embodied in this intimate but powerful trio: the English trumpeter, based in Wales, brings together a Romanian, Hungary-based guitarist and an Irish percussionist based in England to explore the folk traditions of each of those countries. Playing music from their recent debut recording, the trio creates haunting, evocative landscapes of sound, pushing the boundaries of traditional-sounding melodies with fluid and lyrical solos. £12/£10/£8

Wild Girl

Mirad, a Boy from Bosnia

Written by John Retallack (2003)

Written by Ad de Bont (1993) Translated by Marian Buijs

7pm

Savage Children

A wild girl appears from the woods. Who is she? She’s a fish in the water, a deer on the earth, a flying squirrel in the treetops where she eats and she sleeps. She imitates birdsong so well you’d think there was a nightingale in the room, but she can’t say the words ‘cat’ or ‘dog’. Of course, people want to save the wild girl and make her like everyone else -- a citizen who can play, study, go to work and marry. Who will decide what is best for her? Or is that up to the wild girl herself? Wild Girl is about what a child might do if she had the choice...

8.30pm

Age 8+

‘Refugees don’t exist. Only blown away people exist, People blown by the wind all over the world.’ Set in the Bosnian civil war, this play tells the story of a 13 year old boy’s survival despite the loss of his parents, one dead, the other missing. Mirad is a unique play in its searing portrayal of the impact of war on children. Earthy and natural, written in everyday language, and featuring people who are anything but heroes, Mirad manages to be funny, tragic and hopeful all at once. It has been seen, and vividly remembered, by children and teenagers throughout Europe. This timely production of Mirad marks the 20th anniversary of the play.

Aomori is a place, climate is emotive, the body is alive, souls blossom. Aomori is both an actual and metaphorical place; a place of possibility, believing in wishes, hope, dreams and desires, building new communities through dance. Aomori Project was started in 2008 in response to the Arctic conditions of Northern Japan. Since this time it has existed in various forms, developing with a wide range of artists and performers. Each year a new narrative is formally composed and adapted to diverse casts, contexts and architecture. In this next stage, with dancers Reina Kimura, Elena Jacinta, Agnese Lanza, Tsugaru teodori dancer Yoshiya Ishikawa, musicians Yuji and Yuso Hasegawa and minyo singer Kiyoko Goto, ‘Aomori Aomori’ further explores a co-existence and independence between different art forms, formal and informal choreographic structures, surviving repetition, orientation and disorientation, tipping perspectives from vertical to horizontal.

Ffin Dance Inspired triple bill

Sarah Gillespie

Thu 6 Jun 8pm Missing Pages, choreographed by Sue Lewis, explores the Ravel Sonata for Violin and Cello as a backdrop for wartime memoirs from WW1, written especially for Ffin Dance by Welsh author John F. Wake. Axiom Tangent, choreographed by Gary Lambert, is a response to a score by Oli Newman. The score itself was inspired by number stations (Cold War recordings and number sequences which were transmitted in long wave by a number of Cold War countries’ secret services). Degrees Of Freedom, choreographed by Gary Lambert, is an intimate solo work exploring the changing identity of the body and its relationship to the physical. The work was initially a response to limitations impacted on the body after Gary’s long career in dance. £10/£8

Fri 7 Jun 8pm Sarah Gillespie was born in London to an American mother and British father. She grew up in Norfolk, England — interspersed with numerous trips to Minnesota, where she soaked in the sounds of Bessie Smith, Bob Dylan, Cole Porter and early blues and jazz. Her music is a fusion of jazz, folk and blues knitted together by poetic, streetwise lyricism. She is currently working on her third album due to be released in June 2013. £10 www.sarahgillespie.com

Volcano Theatre Company BLINDA Wed 12 — Sat 22 Jun 8pm (except Sun) Directed by Paul Huw Davies Design by Guðný Hrund Sigurðardóttir Movement by Catherine Bennett A sensory adventure for audiences... Step off the street, and into a darkened room. You can hear someone breathing. Maybe it is your own breath. You can sense someone moving. The ground beneath your feet feels strange. You are not alone. BLINDA is an exchange between audience and performers. You will find yourself in unfamiliar circumstances, where the distinction between yourself and others seems less clear. Your actions are reflected back at you, and resonate outwards from you in ways you never imagined. BLINDA takes its cue from Dostoyevsky’s novella The Double, in which a man walks down the street and sees someone who looks exactly the same as he does. As a consequence of this his life changes forever. We invite you to look into a mirror and realize that for a short space of time you will not see yourself — you will see nothing; you will have disappeared. And when you return, things might have changed. The world is not quite what it seemed, and the needs of strangers are the same as yours. £12/£10/£8 Video taster: www.youtu.be/CscpjJ7m2aE

The songs abound with surreal images of chimney sweeps, crumpled giraffes, lost pince-nez, and waltzing women, all based on the patients’ testimonies. Wed 26 — Fri 28 Jun 8pm Written by Patrick Jones Directed by Chris Durnall

A preacher. A politician. A man. A place where to be who you are is a matter of life and death. Taking its title from graffiti on a wall in Kampala this provocative play explores the life and untimely death of gay rights activist David Kato in the context of a Uganda that slowly slipped into homophobia and human rights abuses. Based on months of research and interviews with those who faced prejudice and violence in the African state the play ‘factionalises’ the stories of those who caused the AntiHomosexuality Bill to be introduced, those who fanned the flames of oppression and those who lived amongst it. Taking in fundamentalist religion, masculinity, identity and love this new and challenging work acts as a testament to those who stood up for the freedom to be and faced the consequences. £8/£6 + Opening night to be followed by Q and A and forum debate with invited guests. Arthur is a grumpy old man incapable of any form of emotional expression to either his son or his terminally ill wife Marion, who, in stark contrast, embraces life as a member of a local choir. With terrific, natural performances from Stamp, Redgrave and Arterton this is a deeply moving tale of redemption. + Soft subtitles on Tue 2 Apr at 5.45pm

Shell runs an isolated petrol station with her father, Pete. Aside from the few regulars who utilise their outpost (including the excellent Michael Smiley), Shell and Pete have almost no contact with the outside world and as such are mutually dependent on one another for basic human needs; needs that become increasingly disturbing and seemingly inescapable. Graham and Cinematographer Yoliswa Gartig paint a haunting vision of life lived outside the boundaries of normal society that is given a vibrant beating heart by Chloe Pirrie in the title role.

Back by popular demand, Hooper [The King’s Speech, The Damned United] has brought this well-loved musical and novel to the screen with a star-studded ensemble cast. 3 Oscars and 4 BAFTAs including Best Supporting Actress Anne Hathaway. + Soft subtitles on Thu 4 Apr at 2.30pm

UK/2012/91mins/15 Dir: Rufus Norris. With Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy, Rory Kinnear

USA/2012/mins/18 Dir: Park Chan-wook. With Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode

The summer holidays have just begun and sweetnatured tomboy Skunk is spending her days lazily observing the families that people her suburban culde-sac. As the days go by her innocence begins to be chipped away, as she realises the drama and horror that awaits her in adulthood. Witnessing the neighbours from hell bullying the fragile loner across the street and the complications of love she is placed in a situation that forces her to make decisions she is not ready to comprehend. With beautiful performances graced by a subtle, lovely score from Damon Albarn this is an impressive film debut from acclaimed theatre director Rufus Norris.

After India’s beloved father dies in a car accident, they are visited by her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, and he comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother. Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him. The long-awaited English language debut from Korean Park Chan-Wook (Oldboy) is a sensuous gothic fairytale destined to beguile and seduce us all.

Simon, a fine art auctioneer handling the sale of a Goya painting, becomes mixed up with a criminal gang to steal the multi-million pound artwork. After suffering a blow to the head during the heist he awakens to discover he has no memory of where he hid the painting. When physical threats and torture fail to produce answers, the gang’s leader Frank hires hypnotherapist Elizabeth Lamb to delve into the darkest recesses of Simon’s psyche. As Elizabeth begins to unravel Simon’s broken subconscious, the lines between truth, suggestion, and deceit begin to blur. In this stylish, gut-wrenching thriller we see a return to film for Boyle who over the past year has grown into a national treasure with his staging of blockbuster theatre and the globally acclaimed Olympics opening ceremony. + Soft subtitles on Wed 24 Apr at 2.30pm

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone Sat 13 — Wed 17 Apr USA/2013/100mins/15 Dir: Don Scardino With: Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carry, Alan Arkin

Las Vegas favourites Burt Wonderstone and his sidekick Anton have allowed their show to grow dated whilst Steve Gray steals the limelight with his guerrilla street magician act. Burt finds himself out of a job, cynical and broke and finds himself on a quest with his original mentor Rance Hanson to see if he can regain his passion for magic once more.

Reality Fri 19 — Thu 25 Apr Italy/2012/116mins/15/subtitles Dir: Matteo Garrone With Aniello Arena, Paola Minaccioni, Loredana Simoli

Luciano, a charming and affable fishmonger, becomes unexpectedly obsessed with being a contestant on a reality show and the imagined wealth and fame it will bring. So overcome by his dream, the concept leads him down a rabbit hole of skewed perceptions and paranoia and Luciano’s own reality begins to spiral out of control. This boisterous Fellini-esque satire is a comment on the modern infatuation with the vulgarity of celebrity, an exploration of what passes for community from the director of Gomorrah.

The Place Beyond The Pines Fri 19 Apr — Thu 2 May

USA/2013/140mins/15 Dir: Derek Cianfrance. With: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes

Graham Jones Chief Projectionist Ken Loach popped into the projection booth recently to check on The Spirit of ‘45. He knew that despite the thousands of hours of production, the quality of final presentation is vital. Side by Side (p34) looks at the irreversible move from analogue to digital cinema; goodbye heavy reels of fragile 35mm film, hello hard drives, satellite and streaming. It’s still only a different means to the same end. We’ll continue presenting cinema in a way that best honours the director’s intentions for the enjoyment of Chapter’s dedicated and passionate audience…

The Place Beyond The Pines

Luke is in constant motion, a motorcycle stunt performer travelling from town to town with the carnival. Passing through his home town he tries to reconnect with a former lover only to learn that in his absence she has given birth to their son Jason. Resolving to forsake life on the road to look after his family he is thrust into a new career as a bank robber by a sleazy new friend. But it is only a matter of time before Luke runs up against the law in the form of ambitious local cop Avery Cross and his corrupt boss. An ambitious thriller with a confident swagger and an enthralling score from Faith No More’s Mike Patton this is a punchy follow up to director Cianfrance’s delicate drama Blue Valentine.

Fri 19 — Thu 23 Apr UK/2013/98mins/U Dir: Ken Loach. With Ray Davies, Tony Benn.

1945 was a pivotal year in British history. The unity that carried Britain through the war allied to the bitter memories of the inter-war years led to a vision of a better society. Loach has created a rich political and social narrative using archive film of the period and contemporary interviews with those who remember those times, such as ex-Miner Ray Davies from Caerphilly and pioneering Valleys GP, Dr. Julian Tudor-Hart.

Acoustic Routes Tue 23 + Wed 24 Apr UK/1992/102mins/12A Dir: Jan Leman With: Bert Jansch, Wizz Jones, Ralph McTell, Davey Graham

Narrated by fan Billy Connolly, this is the story of guitarist and singer Bert Jansch, who was at the forefront of the renaissance in British folk music in the 1960s. With his eclectic mix of influences including jazz, blues, Celtic and classical music, the purity of his sound belied the complexity of his technique. As a teenager in the early 1960’s, Bert sat at the feet of Brownie McGhee mesmerised by his playing. Armed with bewildering virtuosity, he fashioned sublime interpretations of traditional and blues music on the acoustic guitar. The result was music that had a profound influence on a generation of musicians including Bob Dylan and Neil Young and still inspires today’s generation of guitarists and singers. Remastered and updated for the 20th anniversary of the original BBC film, this includes many unseen performances from Jansch and his contemporaries.

The ABCs of Death

38

Fri 26 Apr USA/Worldwide/2012/124mins/18 Dir: various. With Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Ivan Gonzalez, Kyra Zagorsky

Twenty-six directors. Twenty-six ways to die. Perhaps the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with segments directed by over two dozen of the world’s leading talents in contemporary horror. Inspired by children’s educational books, the film is comprised of twenty-six individual chapters; each helmed by a different director assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were then given free-reign in choosing a word to create a story involving death. Provocative, shocking and funny this is the ultimate feast of gore. Can you survive till the last bite? + If you like this, why not try Stoker (p31), the Evil Dead trio (p33) and Faust (p37)?

Side Effects Fri 26 Apr — Thu 2 May USA/2013/106mins/15 Dir: Steven Soderberg. With: Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum

After her hedge-fund manager husband is put in prison for insider trading, Emily becomes depressed and despite reuniting with her husband she still lives in a fog of hopelessness. Changing doctors and medications in an attempt to find a cure, new psychiatrist Jonathan Banks prescribes a new medication called Ablixa but the side effects of this drug have dangerous consequences. This tense and brilliantly-handled thriller, which Soderberg has claimed will be his last film, is a timely comment on our medicated society and the shallow comforts brought with wealth.

Oil City Confidential Sun 28 Apr Doors 7pm, film 8pm UK/2009/104min Dir: Julien Temple

Launching the season is Julien Temple’s Oil City Confidential, the story of Dr Feelgood. Four men in cheap suits came crashing out of Canvey Island in the early ‘70s, sandpapered the face of rock’n’roll and left all that came before a burnt-out ruin. Taking London by storm, they sped through Europe and conquered the UK charts before imploding, just as punk was born and America beckoned with open arms. Members of The Clash, Blondie and The Sex Pistols join Dr Feelgood to tell the story of Canvey, ‘70s England and the greatest local band in the world.
