Life begins at 40... and our 40th birthday year has been full of all the colour and flavour, all the verve and passion that makes us special. There were some standout moments... from the WITH Collective relocating part of the cafe into the gallery to the edginess of Experimentica; from an impromptu performance in the bar by Iwan Rheon after a screening of Resistance to the arrival of the Chapter bee hives. But now isn’t the time to look back and in a curious way we’ve moved in a full circle. A year ago we launched our birthday celebrations with our first Art Car-Bootique taking over the car park for a mad mix of stalls, music, performance and curated projects. It was a huge success and so April sees us putting our heads back together with Something Creatives to bring you 50 pitches with an eccentric twist on all things British (see p8). It’s been a great year with a record number of events and attendances. But it’s not really about the numbers; it’s about the artists we support, the events we present, the ideas we crystalise and the memories we create. Thanks for helping us make it happen.

The Institute Of Critical Zoologists Fri 27 April — Sun 17 June • Gwe 27 Ebrill — Sul 17 Mehefin Preview: Thu 26 April • 6-8pm • Iau 26 Ebrill The Institute of Critical Zoologists (ICZ) works with artists, scientists and researchers to develop a critical approach to the zoological gaze. Motivated by current ecological concerns, the heart of its practice addresses the human regard for animals as conveyors of meaning with values that are both culturally and politically specific. Taking factional environments as a starting point for quasi-factual scenarios, projects are realised as installations, photographic art works, archive material and expedition reports. The ICZ aims to test the role of art and photography in the dissemination of knowledge and acceptance of truths. We have worked in collaboration with the ICZ to present its first UK retrospective exhibition that interrogates the boundaries between the seen and the unseen, art and artifice, credence and fantasy; exploring methods of allegorical representation and interpretation. ICZ artist Zhao Renhui, has undertaken a residency supported by National Museum Cardiff in March 2012, which has informed part of the research for this exhibition. An installation by the artist is open in the National History Galleries at the Museum between Tue 13 March and Sun 17 June 2012. Pauline J Yao writes, Zhao’s work “may be truthful depictions or artful fabrications, but it hardly matters: Zhao succeeds in proving that our assumptions about reality must be rigorously questioned if not, on occasion, fully abandoned”. (Best of 2010, Art Forum) This exhibition is curated by Lauren Jury and Helen Warburton. Biography Under the organisational name of The Institute of Critical Zoologists, Zhao Renhui has shown in a number of international exhibitions and been the subject of extensive writing and commentary. Recent group exhibitions include: The Singapore Art Museum (2012); Langgeng Art Foundation, Indonesia (2011); Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan; Seoul Arts Center, Korea; (both 2010); Photo Levallois, Paris (2008), as well as solo exhibitions at The Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (2012) and The Arts Gallery, London (2011). In 2011 he received the Deustche Bank Award in Photography from University of the Arts London and was awarded the Singapore National Arts Council Young Artist Award in 2010. In 2009, he won a distinguished art prize in Singapore, The United Overseas Bank Painting of the Year Award. Zhao graduated with a Masters (Distinction) in Photography from The London College of Communication under its graduate scholarship program. He lives in London and Singapore. www.criticalzoologists.org Opposite page: Blind Long-tailed Owl, Desert Variant of Little Owl, 2011. Art in the Bar Nick Williams Fri 30 March — Sun 20 May • Gwe 30 Mawrth — Sul 20 Mai Nick Williams applies the knowledge and ideas of Modernism to his work in an attempt to challenge recent statements by some critics that ‘painting is antiModernist’. His works take reference from great painters like Breugel and Matisse, fused with modern popular music culture. The iconic rock star motif is repeated again and again, reflecting the ecstatic highs and devastating lows of life. They are stripped of their instruments, isolated and at odds with the backdrop they are painted against. The figures are drawn free-hand, sourced from internet videos. They become deformed and twisted apparitions after being sketched from a moving image, where elements are kept or deleted at will. Traditional rules are simultaneously maintained and broken: there is light, but no shadow; each area has been resolved and activated as a part geometric, part-ambiguous abstract composition, informed by an intuitive approach. Biography Nick Williams was born in Merseyside in 1981 and now lives and works in Bristol. He studied at Liverpool John Moores Univesity (2000) and Hull School of Art (2003). Selected group exhibitions include: The Manchester Contemporary, Spinningfields, Manchester; Nothing Gold Can Stay, Angelika Studio’s, High Wycombe (both 2011); The Constant Garden, Casa De Brujas, Liverpool Biennial; The Museum Of Accumulation, Casa De Brujas, Liverpool (both 2010); Sale, The Royal Standard, Liverpool (2009). He was selected for the Celeste Art Prize, London in 2007 and is currently represented by Mermaid and Monster, Cardiff. www.nickdietrichwilliams.com

Art Car Bootique 2012 Sun 15 April • 11am – 6pm • Sul 15 Ebrill Car Park, Caffi Bar and elsewhere… Following the success of last year’s event, we thought it would be rude not to do it all over again, so we’ve got together with Something Creatives (the people behind Milgi and a host of other exciting projects) to bring you Art Car Bootique 2012. In this year of the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, we’re celebrating all things British but with an eccentric twist. It promises to be the best car boot sale you’ve ever been to, with 50 pitches of art, performance, vintage booters and curated projects. An interactive event with all the fun of the unfair. This year’s line-up is taking shape nicely and our confirmed participants include Artes Mundi,

Ffotogallery, G39, Kathryn Ashill, Goat Major Projects, Mermaid & Monster, Tactile Bosch, Squeaky Hill, Sho Gallery, Ice-Cream Van Man, Pitch Radio, Cerbyd, Elbow Room, British Racing Green, Natalia Dias and many, many more. If that’s not enough, we’ll be continuing the celebrations from 6pm onwards in our main building with cabaret, performance, music and fun. You’ll also be able to get stuck into some delicious British food and ale. We’re bringing out the BBQ for some homemade venison burgers, boar sausages, classic Chapter burgers and falafel burgers; and supplying you with springtime treats like homemade salads, punch and wild fig ice-cream. Check www.chapter.org for updates and news.

Please Note: our car park will be closed until 7.30pm on Sun 15 April. Please check the back of the brochure or go to www.chapter.org for details of additional local parking. Our café won’t be serving roast dinners on the day of the Art Car Bootique.

Bootique British Bake-Off

Win Money. Make Film

Fancy yourself as the next Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood? Bring your best British-inspired cake along and you could win some Chapter goodies. There are two categories — ‘under 12s’ and ‘over 12s’. Get your entry to the cake arena by 1pm and a local WI mercenary will be announcing the winners and runners-up later in the day. On your marks, get set, bake!

While much of the early ACB action takes place in our car park, you may well fancy taking a trip inside, to Cinema 1, where Stephen Hanks is launching this new low budget film production scheme. You’ll be asked for a small fee of £5.50 to see a selection of great short films by local filmmakers. 20% of any proceeds will be used to fund festival entries for said films. The remaining 80% forms a prize that can be won by any member of the audience, to be put towards the production of a brand new short film. Submit your pitch on the day and a panel of judges (including industry professionals) will decide the winner during the following fortnight. The best idea (achievable within the budget) will be awarded the money, under the agreement that they deliver the film within 6 months. The resulting film will be screened at Chapter — and the whole process will start over again. Keep checking www.chapter.org for more details or join the ‘Win Money. Make Film’ Facebook group.

Waking Exploits Pornography by Simon Stephens Directed by Mathilde Lopez Wed 25 — Sat 28 April • 8pm • Mer 25 — Sad 28 Ebrill + Sat 28 April • 2.30pm • Sad 28 Ebrill Pornography — the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction. One unforgettable week in July 2005 — Live 8, the G8 Conference, the 2012 Olympic announcement and the 7/7 bombings. Britain feels like the centre of the world. Major events are taking place all over the country, the energy is electric. The City, Britain and its people are alive. In less than one hour in Central London, everything will change… Simon Stephens’ play follows the entwining journeys of lonely characters all trapped, suffocated and wrestling with their desires for the forbidden. Waking Exploits is a new Cardiff-based company, presenting the work of contemporary playwrights rarely seen in Wales. The company aims to create ambitious projects, tour to locations across the country and produce work that is relevant, thoughtprovoking and innovative. £12/£10/£8 www.wakingexploits.co.uk

Propwash Theatre Drink Canada Dry by Tim Davies Tue 3 — Fri 6 April • 8pm • Maw 3 — Gwe 6 Ebrill London, 1956 — a dilapidated theatre in the bombed-out slums of the East End. A bankrupt acting company stakes all on the debut of a new work by an unknown playwright. The play — The Quare Fellow; the playwright — Brendan Behan; the company — Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop. Drawing on the biographies and memoirs of those involved in the tempestuous run-up to the first night, this is the story of the play’s genesis, and of the people — wayward and wilful, talented and driven — who first brought it to a ravaged, war-torn and unsuspecting world. NB. Contains strong language from the outset. £5/£4

Seren and Literature Wales First Thursday Thu 5 April • 7.30pm • Iau 5 Ebrill This regular literary event continues with the launch of poet Duncan Bush’s ‘The Flying Trapeze’ (born in Cardiff, his poetry collection ‘Masks’ won Welsh Book of the Year in the 90s; he’s also a fine novelist) and Christopher Meredith (also a fine poet) reads from his fourth novel ‘The Book of Idiots’ which has been called a ‘hilarious black comedy... a thriller in which you guess who survives rather than who will die next.’ — Western Mail. £2.50 (on the door) www.serenbooks.com

On The Edge: Love in Plastic by Ian Rowlands

Tue 10 April • 8pm • Maw 10 Ebrill Saddened by the death of his parents in a car crash, Harold has moved into their house which he has encased in plastic. The recurring memory of the delight he experienced wearing a plastic space suit they had given him for his eighth birthday brings him out of his melancholy. He falls in love with an actress he sees in a TV commercial and ventures into the outside world to find her. A script-held performance directed by Julie Barclay. £4 (on the door)

Newsoundwales presents: Wibidi & Cakehole Presley Sat 21 April • 7.30pm • Sad 21 Ebrill Take two members of Super Furry Animals (Dafydd Ieuan and Cian Ciaran) and a dreadlocked tornado with a voice like rust (Wibidi); add to this a fusion of funk, reggae and glam and you have an incendiary cocktail that explodes on stage. Originally formed to create music for the Howard Marks biopic ‘Mr Nice’ the band recently released their debut album — a brilliant collection of songs that provides a snapshot of a life lived large in Cardiff’s Tiger Bay. Cakehole Presley features some of the unsung heroes of Cardiff’s music scene, who played in legendary bands like Howlin Sleepers and Doofer. They released their enigmatically entitled debut album ‘Look After Your Chihuahua’ last year and if there was an award for ‘the greatest living Welsh songwriter’ Chris Ridgeway would surely be a contender. £8 (from www.wegottickets.com)/ £10 (on the door, subject to availability) www.newsoundwales.com www.wibidi.co.uk

Theatre Replacement Dress Me Up In Your Love Tue 1 + Wed 2 May • 8pm • Maw 1 + Mer 2 Mai Part theatre, part installation, part fashion show, the latest piece in Theatre Replacement’s series of biographical performances takes inspiration from garments and outfits from around the world. It’s a generous, open and comic piece, in which the performers reveal stories behind the clothes through songs, movement and dance numbers. The show features live music from Vancouver composer, singer and keyboardist Veda Hille. Theatre Replacement have a signature style of working with texts and biographical performance that connects the personal opinions and biases of the performers with the subject matter. The resulting performance is a mash up of personal stories gathered and retold, from the banal and everyday, to the critical moments and turning points that shape our lives.

“Clothes make the man, they say. It’s an old cliché that may or may not be true (I say not), but it takes on new, fresh — and wonderful — meaning in Theatre Replacement’s new production” The Globe and Mail

USA/2011/109mins/15. Dir: Oren Moverman. With Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster, Steve Buscemi, Sigourney Weaver.

Los Angeles, 1999 — Officer Dave Brown is a Vietnam vet and a Rampart Precinct cop, dedicated to doing ‘the people’s dirty work’ and asserting questionable methods of justice, often blurring the lines between right and wrong to maintain his action-hero state of mind. When he gets caught on tape beating a suspect, he finds himself in a personal and emotional downward spiral, the victim of his own past sins and a refusal to change his ways in light of a department-wide corruption scandal.

Carancho Fri 30 March — Thu 5 April Gwe 30 Mawrth — Iau 5 Ebrill Argentina/2010/107mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Pablo Trapero. With Ricardo Darin, Martina Gusman.

In Argentina over 8,000 people die in traffic accidents every year. Behind each of these tragedies is a flourishing industry founded on insurance pay-outs and legal loopholes. Sosa is a lawyer who tours the A&E Departments of the public hospitals and the police stations in search of potential clients. Luján is a young doctor recently arrived from the provinces. Their love story kicks off one night when they meet in the street — she’s trying to save a man’s life; he wants him on his client portfolio.

Bonsai Fri 30 March — Thu 5 April Gwe 30 Mawrth — Iau 5 Ebrill Chile/2011/95mins/15. Dir: Cristian Jimenez. With Diego Noguera, Nathalia Galgani.

When Julio meets with Gazmuri, an established writer who needs someone to type up the manuscript of his latest novel, he doesn’t get the job. Instead of confessing this to his neighbour and occasional lover Blanca, he makes her believe he is still transcribing the author’s novel and starts to produce one himself. In need of a plot, Julio turns to his first true romance from 8 years earlier with Emilia when they were both studying literature. Told with a quiet humour, Cristian Jimenez’s story explores the intensity of emotions which are contained and filtered through the lens of time.

Bu’r nofel sinigaidd hon yn sail i nifer o ffilmiau, gan ddechrau yn yr Almaen ym 1939. Mae cân o’r enw ‘Bel-Ami’ yn elfen bwysig yn ffilm Willi Forst ac ym 1957 ymddangosodd Forst mewn ffilm a adroddai hanes cyfansoddi’r gân. Mae’n portreadu un o’r cydgyfansoddwyr ac yn canu’r gân. Ym 1947 gwnaed fersiwn o’r nofel yn yr Unol Daleithiau, dan y teitl The Private Affairs of Bel Ami (Albert Lewin). Dewiswyd George Sanders i bortreadu Georges Duroy ac ymhlith y merched y mae’n eu defnyddio mae Angela Lansbury ac Ann Dvorak. Dysgwn yn y ffilm hon mai llysenw yw ‘Bel Ami’ (cyfaill hardd) a roddwyd i Georges Duroy gan ei gariadon. Mae’n amlwg ar ddiwedd y nofel nad yw Duroy yn edifar, er gwaethaf yr holl loes a thorcalon a achosodd. Yn ffilm Lewin mae calon Duroy wedi toddi fymryn, er mwyn bodloni’r sensor. Sensro gwleidyddol oedd y broblem a wynebai Louis Daquin pan gyfarwyddodd ei ddehongliad ef o Bel Ami ym 1955. Roedd llywodraeth Ffrainc yn gwrthwynebu’r cyfeiriadau at Algeria ar adeg pan oedd brwydr Algeria am annibyniaeth yn poethi. Gwnaeth Daquin fersiynau Ffrangeg ac Almaeneg o’r ffilm gyda dau gast gwahanol. Gwnaed fersiwn Ffrengig/ Almaenig arall ym 1975 a chyfarwyddodd Philippe Triboit fersiwn teledu ar y cyd rhwng Ffrainc a Gwlad Belg yn 2005. Efallai fod ‘sensro’ o fath arall wedi effeithio ar fersiwn diweddaraf Bel Ami (Declan Donnellan, Nick Ormerod, 2012). Yn ôl Robert Pattinson, sy’n chwarae’r brif ran, mae ei gymeriad ef yn llai sinigaidd yn y ffilm nag ydyw yn y nofel, am resymau masnachol efallai. Mae ffilmiau blaenorol Pattinson yn cynnwys Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire a’r addasiadau poblogaidd iawn o’r llyfrau ‘Twilight’. Mae’n gobeithio y bydd Bel Ami yn profi ei fod yn actor amryddawn. Bu’r ffilm yn sialens hefyd i’r ddau gyfarwyddwr, gan mai gweithio yn y theatr y buon nhw hyd yn hyn. O’u cwmpas maent wedi casglu tîm profiadol iawn. Bu’r golygydd, Masahiro Hirakubo, yn brysur ers 1994 gan ddechrau gyda Shallow Grave ac mae ffilmiau’r cynhyrchydd, Uberto Pasolini (nai Luchino Visconti), yn cynnwys The Full Monty (1997). Enillodd Rachel Portman, cyd-gyfansoddwr y gerddoriaeth, Oscar am ei gwaith ar Emma (1996). Yn gefn i Robert Pattinson mae tîm rhagorol o gyd-actorion, sef Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci a Kristin Scott Thomas. Mae hon yn ffilm hardd — fe’i ffilmiwyd yn Llundain, Belgrâd a Budapest — mae’n rhywiol ac mae’n hwyl. Bel Ami Fri 30 March — Thu 12 April • Gwe 30 Mawrth — Iau 12 Ebrill UK/2012/103mins/15. Dir: Declan Donnellan, Nick Ormerod. With Robert Pattinson, Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman, Kristen Scott Thomas.

Based on the 1885 short novel by Guy de Maupassant, this is the chronicle of a young man’s rise to power in Paris via his manipulation of the city’s most influential and wealthy women. After two years of military service in North Africa and living in a grubby room in the Parisian suburbs, ex-sergeant Georges Duroy is willing to do almost anything to escape this existence and indulges in numerous amorous adventures and dubious political and moral pursuits in order to insinuate himself into the lives of the late nineteenth century capital’s chicest urbane circles. This is a glamorous and sarcastic comedy of manners showing that hypocrisy is one of the fundamental laws in a bourgeois era.

World Earth Hour Film: Think Global Act Rural Sun 1 April • Sul 1 Ebrill France/2010/113mins/subtitled/PG. Dir: Coline Serreau. With Vandana Shiva, Pierre Rabhi, Ana Primavesi.

Double CL1C card points

We’re screening this radical documentary in celebration of World Earth Hour (Sat 31 March at 8.30pm) when people across the planet are switching off for an hour and seeing things in a new light. Think Global Act Rural digs into the problems of industrialised agriculture, quizzing farmers and philosophers alike, and explores concrete local solutions to the global ecological mess. We’re taken on a journey from French farmers’ co-ops, via landless Brazilian peasants and experimental farms in India, to the world’s biggest organic farm in Ukraine. A wise, funny, optimistic film that concentrates on positive solutions to the ecological, financial, and political crises that we all face.

Bad Film Club: The Happening Sun 1 April • Sul 1 Ebrill USA/2008/91mins/15. Dir M. Night Shyamalan. With Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel.

M. Night Shyamalan’s BFC debut attempts to get to the bottom of a strange, horrible and unprecedented crisis which begins in New York’s Central Park. A high school science teacher, his wife and a young girl are on the run… but will they survive? And could the twist at the end of this M. Night Shyamalan movie be that he’s actually made a good film? Doubtful. Please Note: this film features Nicko and Joe’s irreverent, live, DVDstyle commentary.

The Artist Fri 6 — Sat 21 April • Gwe 6 — Sat 21 Ebrill France/2011/100mins/PG. Dir: Michel Hazanavicius. With Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo, John Goodman.

Another chance to see this beautiful Oscar-winning film which takes place at the height of silent era Hollywood. Aspiring starlet Peppy Miller gets her big break when a chance photograph taken with the world’s biggest movie star ends up on the cover of Variety. The relatively little known principle actors ooze charm and an infectious sense of mischievous fun, while holding genuine emotional sway in the film’s more solemn moments. Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Film.

The Gospel of Us Fri 13 — Thu 19 April • Gwe 13 — Iau 19 Ebrill UK/2012/110mins/Advised 15. Dir: Dave McKean. With Michael Sheen, Hywel Simons, John-Paul Macleod.

Easter. Port Talbot is in a battle for its life. Authoritarian forces have taken over and the town is in thrall to a sinister and heartless corporation, ICU, which puts profit before people in its quest to plunder the town’s resources. When a company man and a suicide bomber clash on the beach, catastrophe is only averted by the intervention of a softly spoken loner with no memory. He is later revealed as ‘The Teacher’, a local man who disappeared 40 days earlier but has now returned. As he gathers followers around him, he is perceived by ICU as a danger who must be removed at all costs. Written by Owen Sheers (author of the international best-seller Resistance), this is the film version of the ground-breaking theatre event by National Theatre Wales which took place across Port Talbot in April 2011, with the people of the town as its cast, crew and heroes.

“One of the outstanding theatrical events not only of this year, but of the decade” The Observer

USA/1916/177mins/PG. Dir: D W Griffiths. With Lillian Gish, Constange Taladge

This early example of ambitious Hollywood filmmaking interweaves four stories that show how hatred and intolerance have battled against love and charity through the ages.

The Third Man Sun 8 + Tue 10 April • Sul 8 + Maw 10 Ebrill UK/1949/104mins/PG. Dir: Carol Reed. With Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli.

An out of work pulp fiction novelist, Holly Martins, arrives in Vienna at the invitation of an ex-school friend, Harry Lime, only to discover that Lime has recently died in a peculiar accident. Yasujiro Ozu’s most enduring masterpiece, Tokyo Story is a beautifully nuanced exploration of filial duty, expectation and regret. From the simple tale of the elderly Hirayama couple’s visit to Tokyo to see their grown-up children, Ozu draws a compelling contrast between the measured dignity of age and the hurried insensitivity of a younger generation.

Intolerance

The Kid With The Bike Fri 6 — Thu 19 April • Gwe 6 — Iau 19 Ebrill Belgium/2011/87mins/subtitled/12A. Dir: Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne. With Thomas Doret, Cecile de France.

Consistent excellence is rare in cinema, but no filmmaking team has more regularly swept us away with their poetic insights into ordinary lives than the brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. On the run from a children’s home where his father has dumped him, 11-year-old Cyril goes to his father’s place, but finds neither him nor his beloved bike. When his carers find him, he dives into a doctor’s waiting room and clings to hairdresser Samantha, who takes an interest and eventually offers to foster him at weekends. The fragility of tentative connections is constantly tested as this angry young boy fights for a sense of self-determination.

Into The Abyss Fri 20 — Thu 26 April • Gwe 20 — Iau 26 Ebrill USA/2011/107mins/12A. Dir: Werner Herzog.

Double CL1C card points

Forming part of Werner Herzog’s Death Row project, this is an outstanding exploration of violent crime and its consequences. Herzog focuses on two main characters, Michael Perry and Jason Burkett, convicted of a triple homicide in their home state of Texas. Perry was interviewed on camera just days before his execution; Burkett was sentenced to life in prison after his father, himself a convicted felon, pleaded for clemency. Herzog also talks to their families and those of the victims, as well as to a chaplain and others intimately involved in administering the death sentence. Much of the strength of the film lies in the interview style, which is respectful, but never shies away from asking uncomfortable questions. What emerges is a coruscating study of the senselessness of violence, whether from individuals or state, and a particularly disturbing picture of the society that breeds it.

Return Fri 6 — Thu 12 April • Gwe 6 — Iau 12 Ebrill USA/2011/98mins/ctba. Dir: Liza Johnson. With Michael Shannon, Linda Cardellini, John Slattery.

This thoughtful consideration of American life during wartime avoids polemical analysis in favour of a touching human story with credible integrity. On returning from a military tour of duty, Kelli is keen to embrace the normality of life with her family and friends in the Ohio community she had been separated from. Gradually, her disaffection with the familiar world takes hold, and her indignation about addressing her memories of war begins to put a strain on her relationships, principally those with her patient husband, Mike, and their young children. First-time feature director Liza Johnson delivers a poignant character study for our time, while Linda Cardellini carries the film with an authoritative performance that reveals her as an actor with real depth and limitless potential.

Trishna Fri 13 — Thu 19 April • Gwe 13 — Iau 19 Ebrill UK/2011/117mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Michael Winterbottom. With Freida Pinto, Riz Ahmed, Roshan Seth.

Michael Winterbottom’s beautiful adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles is transposed to modern day India. In the countryside of Rajasthan, Trishna, daughter of an auto-rickshaw driver, meets Jay, son of a wealthy hotel developer. Jay helps Trishna when her family is in trouble and soon the attraction between them grows. A couple in love, they visit Mumbai for Jay to introduce the country girl to his cosmopolitan art scene friends. But the strength of traditional ways endures, and for Trishna, as was the case for the original Tess, this can only lead to tragedy. + Our Adaptations group meets to discuss Trishna and Thomas Hardy’s ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’ in the Cinema Foyer after the screening on Mon 16 April.

When a group of British friends decide to retire to the less expensive and seemingly exotic India they are enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel. Bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the place is less luxurious than imagined. Initially confused by an India full of contrasts, they start to come to terms with their predicament, sharing new experiences, and ultimately discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past. Featuring a starstudded ‘who’s who’ of British talent, this is a charming and enjoyable ride.

Once Upon A Time In Anatolia Fri 20 — Thu 26 April • Gwe 20 — Iau 26 Ebrill Turkey/2011/157mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Nuri Bilge Ceylan. With Muhammet Uzuner, Yilmaz Erdogan, Taner Birsel.

The director of Uzak and Three Monkeys enhances his evergrowing reputation as one of the new masters of cinema with this beautifully photographed crime drama. The epic story focuses on a murder investigation over one long night in the Anatolian steppes. Kenan, one of the suspects, helps the police with their search but his intoxication and the darkness and visual indistinctness of the landscape make things difficult. As the night progresses, many long-buried thoughts and fears arise in the minds of the hard-bitten lawmen.

“Stunning… It is a brilliant, masterly film with a distinctive force and artistic gravitas. I think it is Ceylan’s best yet… a tale of strange, unclassifiable grandeur” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

This Must Be The Place Fri 20 — Thu 26 April • Gwe 20 — Iau 26 Ebrill Italy/2011/112mins/15. Dir: Paolo Sorrentino. With Sean Penn, Judd Hirsch, Frances McDormand, Harry Dean Stanton.

Cheyenne is a retired, reclusive and oddball rock star (think Robert Smith from The Cure, crossed with Michael Jackson, replete with the perfectly rendered, highpitched voice) living just outside Dublin. His father’s serious illness forces Cheyenne reluctantly back to America, where he embarks on an unusual, offbeat cross-country road trip, in search of someone and something of purpose in his stalled life. This Must Be the Place has a picaresque feel, studded with idiosyncratic encounters, powerful vignettes and wonderful cameos (including one from David Byrne, who also co-wrote the eclectic roots-and-rock soundtrack). After a series of impressive Italian films, director Paolo Sorrentino expands his global horizons to impressive effect with this, his first English-language film.

Blackthorn Fri 27 April — Thu 3 May • Gwe 27 Ebrill — Iau 3 Mai USA/2012/102mins/15. Dir: Mateo Gil. With Sam Shepard, Eduardo Noriega, Stephen Rea.

It’s been said (but unsubstantiated) that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in a standoff with the Bolivian military in 1908. In this slightly different interpretation, Cassidy survived, and is quietly living out his years under the name James Blackthorn in a secluded Bolivian village. Tired of his long exile from the US and hoping to see his family again before he dies, Cassidy sets out on the long journey home. But when an unexpected encounter with an ambitious young criminal derails his plans, he is thrust into one last adventure, the likes of which he hasn’t experienced since his glory days with the Sundance Kid.

“An outlaw tale that is at once exciting and elegiac, elegant and earthy. Sam Shepard is as good as he’s ever been.” — The Huffington Post

In Darkness Fri 27 April — Thu 3 May • Gwe 27 Ebrill — Iau 3 Mai Holland/2012/145mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Agnieszka Holland. With Robert Wieckiewicz, Benno Furmann, Agnieszka Grochowska.

Leopold Socha is a sewer worker and petty thief in Lvov, a Nazi occupied city in Poland. One day he encounters a group of Jews trying to escape the liquidation of the ghetto and offers to hide them, for money, in the labyrinth of sewers beneath the bustling city. What starts out as a straightforward and cynical business arrangement soon turns into something very unexpected, as the enterprise seeps deeper into Socha’s conscience. Based on a true story, this is an extraordinary tale of survival as the men, women and children all try to outwit certain death during 14 months of ever increasing and intense danger.

Iron Sky Fri 27 April — Thu 3 May • Gwe 27 Ebrill — Iau 3 Mai Finland/2011/93mins/part subtitled/ctba. Dir: Timo Vuorensola. With Christopher Kirby, Gotz Otto, Julia Dietze.

It’s 2018 and, unknown to the world, in 1945 a group of scientists from the Nazi fortress of New Swabia in the Antarctic escaped to the dark side of the moon. In complete isolation, in a military base known as the ‘Black Sun’, an Armada of Nazi UFOs is being constructed with the intention of returning to Earth to subjugate the population. Panic arises however when a US space shuttle lands and so sets into action mission ‘meteor Blitzkrieg’ and a party of Nazis head for New York — but secret agent Renate has her own plans. Made with the support of a vast internet community, this fulfils all the criteria for an over-the-top, trashy B-movie-cum-exploitation film full of cheap thrills.

Le Havre Fri 27 April — Thu 3 May • Gwe 27 Ebrill — Iau 3 Mai Finland/2011/93mins/subtitled/PG. Dir: Aki Kaurismäki. With Andre Wilms, Kati Outinen, Jean-Pierre Darroussin.

In this warm-hearted portrait of a French harbour city, fate throws young African refugee Idrissa into the path of Marcel Marx, a well-spoken bohemian who works as a shoe-shiner. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to the officials who are doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation. A political fairy tale that exists somewhere between the reality of contemporary France and the classic cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville, Le Havre is a charming, deadpan delight, excellently directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki (The Man Without A Past).
