Welcome
chapter.org
Welcome to your guide to all that’s happening during April. This month our gallery will be taken over by the wonderfully curious sculptures of Jonathan Baldock, as we host his first solo exhibition in Wales, The Soft Machine (p4-5). If, like us you like to delve a little deeper in to an exhibition, why not join our artist live guides at the gallery for an informal talk (p8) on Sat 26 April. You may have noticed that we’re showing more and more live music, and this month is no exception. We start the month with an exclusive performance by Welsh experimental trailblazers Bür Hoff Bau (p13), in addition to performances by the satirical Jonny & the Baptists (p12) and the rising soul star Kizzy Meriel Crawford (p12). We’re also thrilled to present the Welsh premiere of Tender Napalm (p14). Over in the cinema, we’re delighted to host Cardiff Independent Film Festival (p18–20) crammed full of wonderful independent features from around the world. Throughout April we’ll be screening films championed by Mark Cousins, to celebrate the release of A Story of Children and Film (p17) and before the end of the month, we’ll be screening The Lunchbox (p25) once more — a film premiered at the ever popular WOW Film Festival. Looking for things to do with the little ones? From shadow puppetry to Moviemaker Junior, there’s plenty to keep them entertained. Turn to pages 28-29 to find out more. Thanks for reading and see you soon! Cover image: Jonathan Baldock, Performer, 2013, mixed media, 60cm (d) 158cm (h) 110cm (w)

Jonathan Baldock: The Soft Machine Preview: Thu 17 Apr 6 — 8pm Exhibition: Fri 18 Apr — Sun 29 June Curiously irregular and meticulously crafted, Jonathan Baldock’s hybrid forms occupy the gallery space, acting as both costume and object. The Soft Machine, Jonathan’s first solo exhibition in Wales, explores the relationship between the body and sculpture using installation and performance. His work draws unlikely parallels between seemingly disparate cultural references, nodding to literature, art history, pagan ritual, cinema, fashion and the carnivalesque. Transformation is a recurring motif in Jonathan’s work: masks, nests and shells offer a kind of refuge. They are a new skin to inhabit; a place to lie concealed and protected. Oscar Wilde said, “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” For Jonathan, the mask provides a place where you can be yourself. His swathed costumes act as mobile homes which a performer or person can inhabit. Modest materials become monuments, brought to life through carefully choreographed movement; the inanimate becomes animate and the humorous unsettling. Acting as a kind of safe zone, his sculptures can conjure memories of cosy children’s stories; though simultaneously also reference somewhat monstrous fairground attractions. Interrogating the role of the forgotten or marginalised craftsperson in our culture, Jonathan has developed a visual language where the importance of materials continues to play a significant role in his work, transforming ‘lowly‘ materials into something of status by defying our preconceived expectations about what they can do or be. Jonathan’s work denies specific narrative in favour of conversation: between tradition and craft, movement and stillness, object and body.
Biography Jonathan Baldock was born in 1980 in Pembury, UK. He graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2005 and now lives and works in London. Recent solo exhibitions include: Hot Spots, The Apartment, Vancouver (Canada), 2014; A Strange mix between a Butcher’s Shop and a Nightclub, Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge (UK) 2013; The Blue Epoch, Colloredo-Mansfeldský Palác, AMoYA, Prague (Czech Republic) 2012; Musica, Annarumma Gallery, Naples, (Italy) 2011; Pierrot, PeregrineProgram, Chicago (USA) 2011. Selected group exhibitions: Two Figures in a Landscape (choreographed by Rubato Dance Group), Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai (China) 2013; Relativity Absolute, Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge (UK), 2013; The Gathering, Mytoro Gallery, Hamburg (Germany), 2013; Implausible Imposters, Ceri Hand Gallery, London (UK), 2013; Pile, Chapter, Cardiff (Wales) 2011. Andrew Morris, What’s Left Behind? 2013. 6x7" medium format
06
ART IN THE BAR Andrew Morris: What’s Left Behind? Fri 14 Mar — Sun 18 May The interiors depicted in Andrew Morris’ photographs appear calm and contemplative, in a transitory place — somewhere between occupied and vacant. Reading glasses still perched on the windowsill and bedrooms with beds that seem to have been freshly made — you could easily be mistaken in believing the owner has just popped out. Look a little closer and you’ll find something isn’t quite right. Wallpaper peeling from the walls, a single photograph on an otherwise empty bookshelf; these are homes in the process of being cleared out, homes that once belonged to someone who has passed away. Morris sensitively captures these scenes which are about more than the remaining possessions. He leads us to consider and reflect upon the ideas of home, family and ownership.
Biography Andrew Morris lives and works in Swansea and recently graduated from University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Swansea, where he studied Photography in the Arts. Morris is the first recipient of the Wales International Young Artist Award which was presented to him by the British Council Wales for this body of work. The Wales International Young Artist Award The Wales International Young Artist Award was launched in 2013 by the British Council Wales with the aim of both identifying a new pool of young talent across the creative sectors and also nurturing it by offering young artists from Wales, national and international exposure. The winner receives a £500 prize and the opportunity to exhibit in six continents and over 100 countries. The 2013 judges were Hannah Firth, Chapter; Melissa Hinkin, Artes Mundi and indendent producer/curator Marc Rees.

Drink
Every Wednesday 4 — 7pm
We love seeking out tasty new beers, and this month we’re pleased to announce the arrival of a new German draught beer, Ankerbraü. We were selected from many other venues to be the first bar in Wales to stock this premium pilsner. It is considered more ‘green’ than any other beer on the market as the brewery has developed their own Bag-In-Box and carbonation technology rather than using conventional kegs. This means that the containers that the beer arrives in do not need to be returned to the brewery, hence cutting down on fuel emissions, and are also 100% recyclable. Plus it’s really tasty!
Our regular pop up market features local food producers selling scrumptious artisan foods. Come and stock up on gorgeous breads, delicious cakes, speciality meats and chutneys and much more. For details of what’s on offer please see our website.
Hire We have a number of spaces and facilities for hire at Chapter, many of which are booked regularly by an eclectic mix of day and evening classes. Check out our website or pick up a leaflet at the box office to see what’s on offer. And if you’re looking for a room for a party, meeting, conference, video shoot, rehearsal or team building extravaganza, then our great facilities, technical know-how and friendly staff will help you to create a comfortable, distinctive and memorable event. We’re also able to supply a variety of catering options for your event. I’r Bür Hoff Bau Thu 3 Apr
Wales/2013/90mins/no cert. Dir: Hans Glaumman.
A long-lost, Welsh language documentary on the trials and tribulations of one of Wales’ most innovative and unique bands, Bür Hoff Bau. Produced by award-winning German director Hans Glaumann during the summer of 1974, this film documents the dissolution of the band as they struggle to meet their own expectations during the recording of their debut album. Discovered by record label Klep Dim Trep and lovingly restored by production company Ffesant. £6
Bür Hoff Bau Sat 5 Apr 8pm After a 40 year absence, one of Wales’ most unique and experimental bands finally returns to the stage. Ignored by the public during their time and left out of the history books, the band disappeared into the depths of history… until now. This unique live event, brought to you by Klep Dim Trep, follows the screening on Thu 3 Apr of I’r Bür Hoff Bau, a documentary produced by acclaimed German director Hans Glaumann. £8 Tickets to both film and live event £12
Mon 14 Apr 8pm This is not your everyday comic. Older, wiser, calmer (and after being fitted with a hearing aid, infinitely quieter), Brendon’s energy is still enticing. His turn of phrase is coarse yet oddly eloquent, remaining fully accessible and intensely loveable. Never pompous and ever self-deprecating, he somehow seems to get away with murder. Not so much a “truth-sayer” as a traditionally harmless and inclusive warm-hearted court jester. Often replicated but never matched, his shows aren’t just extended sets, Burns specialises in creating experiences: forever experimenting with the form and throwing himself new challenges. £12/£10/£8

Luna is bored up in the sky by herself with nobody to play with. Although she is surrounded by stars, they never quite understand her — it’s certainly lonely being the only moon. One night, as she’s racing among the stars, she spots a young boy hiding from shadows which move like monsters on his bedroom walls. Luna decides to slide down from the sky to make friends with the boy. Together they go on a night-time adventure to help him overcome his fear of the dark. By Philip Ridley Directed by Chris Durnall Lighting Design by Jane Lalljee “I could squeeze a bullet between those lips. Point first. Press it between those rosebud lips. Prise it between your pearly whites. Gently. I wouldn’t break a single tooth.” A man and a woman are locked at a crucial point in their relationship. They love each other but something terrible has happened. Tender Napalm is a high-impact, high-concept, two handed play which explores the landscape that is a relationship between a man and a woman. Explosive, poetic, brutal, the play weaves a compelling theatrical tapestry to re-examine and re-define the language of love. The performance on Tue 22 April will be followed by a Q & A with Philip Ridley. £12/£10/£8 Age 16+ (Contains strong language and scenes of a sexual and violent nature)

Joe, a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, is discovered badly beaten in an alley by an older bachelor, Seligman who takes her into his home. As he tends to her wounds, she recounts the erotic story of her adolescence and young-adulthood, portrayed in flashback by Stacy Martin.
Nymphomaniac: Volume 2 Sat 12 — Wed 16 Apr Denmark/2013/118mins/18. Dir: Lars Von Trier. With: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Jamie Bell, Willem Dafoe, Udo Kier.
This second volume follows Joe as she tries to rediscover the pleasure of sex. But despite the many graphic sex scenes, the film is defiantly un-titillating; instead it’s a visually and intellectually dazzling meditation on love, art, religion and desire. Arguably recalling the richness of films such as Breaking the Waves, this is the work of a radical writer-director at the height of his powers.

The Bronze Level Arts Award
Moviemaker Junior returns as a regular feature in our learning calendar, every first Saturday of the month from Sat 5 April! So if you’re under 16 and an aspiring filmmaker, come and see what we have to offer. We watch and talk about short films and also screen the films you make. This year we’re excited to be able to offer the Bronze Level Arts Award for young people aged 11+ What is it? The Bronze Arts Award allows young people to get involved in the arts and share their skills. Bronze — a Level 1 national qualification, requires that young people take part in an arts activity they enjoy, go to an arts event, research their arts hero/heroine and share their skills with others. How does it work? Young people will plan their work with an adviser, and keep a record by creating their own Arts Award portfolio. Their portfolio might be a folder, sketchbook, video diary or a website — it’s up to them. When will it take place? There will be two evening sessions a month beginning Tue 8 Apr.
Sat 5 Apr 10 — 11.30am

Name: Hugo Dodd Age: 14 What is your film about? The film is our own take on the James Bond series. It is about the Cold War and the strategic defence initiative, as well as government conspiracies and simple life messages. How long did it take to make? It has taken us about a year and a half to make. What software did you use? I used Sony movie studio 0.9 and 10 platinum to edit it. How long have you been making movies? I have enjoyed making films from a very young age, since I was maybe 6 or 7 years old. I am a graduate from Chapter’s Young Person’s Film Academy. What kind of camera do you use? HD Sony Camcorder.
