Welcome

Hello and welcome to your guide to all that’s in store this April. Our Gallery, Art in the Bar and lightbox spaces will be transformed this month by the witty and colourful work of artist Richard Woods (p4–5), who’ll be creating new pieces based on our building’s rich history. Over in the theatre we’ll be offering live music from Frank Yamma, Lleuwen Steffan and Colorama (p13) a beautiful dance double bill by Anushiye Yarnell and Riikka Theresa Innanen (p15), not to mention unique clown show Finding Home (p11). We’ll start the month by screening hotly anticipated film Still Alice (p19) amongst other new releases including edgy comedy Mommy (p19) and It Follows (p19). Our season of films on the impact of conflict continues with Welsh and European films exploring how our lives have been shaped by international conflict (p28–30). We’ll also play host to Cardiff Independent Film Festival (CIFF) (p20–22), screening new independent features and providing a platform for aspiring filmmakers to network. Are there young would-be filmmakers in your household? Why not bring them along to our Easter Film Activity Day, which explores the film Into the Woods and offers a day crammed with creative activities (p17). Thanks for reading and see you soon.

Richard Woods: Inclosure Acts Preview: Thu 9 Apr, 6 — 8pm Exhibition: Fri 10 Apr — Sun 14 June Richard Woods has built an international reputation for his signature architectural transformations, paintings and sculpture that fold the history of the decorative arts, functional design and graphic language into intoxicatingly witty plays with image and surface. His architectural interventions are chiefly concerned with the re-surfacing of existing structures, proposing an absurd twist on the cult of home improvement and DIY aesthetics. For Chapter, Woods has created new works in the Gallery and for the lightbox that are inspired by both the history of the building — sited as it is on a former cattle market — and by the Inclosure Acts (1604-1914) that radically transformed open fields and common land in the countryside. During this time, almost seven million acres of land became private — where once there were large, communal fields, land was now hedged and fenced off, and old boundaries disappeared. In contrast, wall-based works reference the suburban in a series of mono prints. Based on hard-edged renditions of Mock Tudor decoration, the paintings are suburbia meets Neo Geo — the past made future.

Biography Richard Woods was born in 1966 in Cheshire, UK and was educated at Winchester School of Art and Slade School of Fine Art. He lives and works in London. In 2014 Chapter collaborated with Woods to produce ‘Cardiff Rebuild’ a work in the grounds of Cardiff Castle as part of Cardiff Contemporary. Woods has exhibited extensively internationally and significant recent projects include major commissions at the University of Bath (2014); A Maze for Yorkshire, Wakefield (2013); Public Art Fund and Lever House, New York (2010) and collaborations on a wide range of furniture with Established & Sons. Woods has work in major collections internationally including The Saatchi Collection, London; Frank Cohen Collection, Manchester / Wolverhampton and Jumex Collection, Mexico. He is represented by Works I Projects

Talk at 2 Sat 25 Apr, 2pm Our ‘Talks at 2’ are on every other Saturday during exhibitions and are hosted by our artist Live Guides Richard Higlett and Thomas Williams. Talks at 2 are free of charge and there’s no need to book in advance — just turn up at the Gallery and join in! FREE

Sponsorship In 2014 Arts & Business Cymru awarded Chapter with the overall Arts Award for the outstanding way we work with businesses. We have a number of sponsorship opportunities available which offer fantastic benefits including staff involvement, corporate hospitality and brand promotion.

For Legal & General, the project fit strongly with their CSR strategy and their Health & Wellbeing programme. With an ever increasing ageing population, the company is looking at ways to reinforce the work they’re doing around their ‘dignity in later life’ campaign. Not just the impact the ageing population has on the company as a business (pensions, life & critical illness insurance) but also the impact it has on their employees, their relatives and the wider society. This month, the project will go one step further in offering Legal & General employees the opportunity to take part in an Experiencing Dementia workshop run by Re-Live Theatre. The aim of this is to support and benefit their employees who work in the business areas dealing directly with some of the company’s most vulnerable customers as well as employees who are personally touched by the issue. The workshops aim to enhance the knowledge and awareness in communication skills with people with dementia and deepen the empathy for people with dementia and explore how this can improve a personcentred approach. The workshops are generously funded by Legal & General and through the Arts & Business Cymru programme Culturestep.

Choosing to never leave the family flat to avoid ‘the crushed’, the Blavatsky children have learnt to interact with each other and the world in a more… unusual way. What will happen when a doctor enters their world and tries to introduce them to ours? Blavatsky Tower will make you think and laugh in equal measure.

Nero-Film Studios, Berlin, 1927. A fun-loving young American actress and a straitlaced German director make a film destined to become a classic of the silent screen. Slum tenement flat, New York, 1955, An alcoholic, penniless, washed-up star of the silent screen hears a knock on the door. Someone has found Louise Brooks... The Winter Gift which premiered to great acclaim last year tells the story of ‘Pandora’s Box’ and the men and women who made it — and what happened afterwards... Written by award-winning writer T.J. Fri 24 + Sat 25 Apr 7pm ‘It is always much easier to be in a world you can leave tomorrow’ An original solo clown show developed through extensive conversational interaction between performer and director, exploring the performer’s personal mythology, embodied by six masks, on which this style of clowning is based. A world is created, reminiscent of Gogol and Beckett in which we begin to face all directions of ourselves and laugh at the beauty of our own ridiculousness.

Performer: Denni Dennis, Wales/ Denmark Co-writer and Director: Sue Morrison, Artistic Director of the Theatre Resource Centre, Canada Costumes and set design: Philip Ignatiev, Russia £12/£10/£8

Gladiator Wed 29 + Thu 30 Apr 8pm Written by Laurence Allan It’s Not About The Bike — It’s About The Dream. Before the Tour de France and before Sir Bradley Wiggins, there was Arthur Linton from Aberdare. A world cycling champion in 1895 who took on the best and left behind not only the first drug scandal, but also the first racing bike — The Gladiator. Fast forward to modern day and we meet 18 year old Jimmy, who stumbles upon the Gladiator in his garage, along with the ghost of trainer Choppy Warburton, who has returned in search of ‘honour and dignity’. Unfortunately for Jimmy this involves embarking on the epic Bordeaux to Paris bike race without ever leaving his garage. A surreal journey full of pitfalls and punctures where he must survive the attentions of his Goth girl neighbour, his model wannabe twin sister, his mother’s slimeball of a boyfriend, his hapless dad who’s been missing for ten years and the lure of shame or glory. This brand new production is an inspiring, funny and uplifting drama. £12/£8 Recommended age 14+

Turkey/2013/112mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Alphan Eseli. With: Ugur Polat, Nergis Öztürk, Serdar Orçin.

Strange events happen in a small village in the north of Germany during the years just before World War I, which seem to be ritual punishment. The abused and suppressed children of the villagers seem to be at the heart of this mystery. This tense, intriguing masterpiece depicts the decline of an empire and the emergence of fascism.

The 1915 Battle of Sarikamis in eastern Anatolia was a devastating turning point in the defeat of the Ottoman empire, as 90,000 troops froze to death in an ill-advised offensive against Russian troops in the snow-covered hills. Following a small group of civilians trying to survive their journey over the hills to safety in this stunning debut, we see the impact and inhumanity of war on the local people and the indifference of nature.
