Chapter 40 Celebrations Fri 15 — Sun 17 April • Gwe 15 — Sul 17 Ebrill On Friday 15 April 1971, at precisely 3.45pm, the first ever Chapter board meeting was held and our constitution was signed. During the coming 12 months we’re programming a series of special events to celebrate 40 years at the forefront of the European cultural scene; 40 years of creating and presenting groundbreaking, internationally acclaimed work in cinema, theatre and the visual arts; 40 years as a cultural hub, a meeting place of ideas, a safe and open space for creative minds. We’re kicking off the celebrations with an action packed weekend of art, entertainment and good times. And we’d be delighted if you’d join us for some or all of the weekend’s activities, including a children’s street party, live music and cabaret performances, a 70s disco and special birthday versions of your favourite Chapter events. Have a browse of the next few pages for full details of what we’re up to. Our birthday extravaganza is still in the planning stages so keep an eye on www.chapter.org for more details, or join us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/chapterarts) or Twitter (@chaptertweets).

Chapter 40 Begins
Tango Night
Fri 15 April • 3.45pm • Gwe 15 Ebrill When our redevelopment got underway in 2008, one of the builders happened upon an all-butforgotten 1970s Chapter time capsule buried in a wall he was knocking down. This event takes place in Cinema 1 — be careful which seat you choose as it could lead to unwelcome audience participation. This multimedia event will contain strobe effects, unsuitable images and irregular subsonic frequencies not suitable for pace-makers. £3 Soundcloud.com/zwolf
Young Persons’ Film Academy Sat 16 April • 10.30am — 12pm • Sad 16 Ebrill The YPFA will be around and about the building, recording interviews with our customers about their memories of Chapter.

Chapter 40 in the Gallery We’ve got a great visual arts programme lined up over the next 12 months to celebrate our 40th birthday, with UK premieres, guest curators, large-scale themed exhibitions and off-site projects. At the end of April we kick off with a solo exhibition of newly commissioned works by David Mackintosh (see p11). For June, we’ve invited Bristol-based gallerist Simon Morrissey to curate an exhibition that includes work by Sarah Dobai, Mark Dean, Andy Holden and more; and in September watch out for WITH collective who will be taking over the building! At Christmas we’re presenting a solo exhibition by German artist Paloma Varga Weisz who will be making new work for Chapter; and the New Year brings a large curated exhibition entitled ‘Nothing, Like Something, Happens Anywhere’ which includes some big international names, so watch this space. Outside of the gallery, Lauren Jury continues to curate our lively programme of Art in the Bar. In 2011 she will be working with Lloyd Durling, Anabelle Shelton, Melanie Counsell and Elizabeth McDonald and is currently planning more site specific works for your pleasure. Lauren is also curating her first exhibition for the gallery in the spring — The Institute of Critical Zoologists are collaborating with local experts and institutions and their exhibition looks set to be a highlight of our Birthday year. The lightbox at the front of the building continues to be a key feature of our programme and commissions will be revealed soon, including both local and international names. Away from Chapter, we will be working with Heather & Ivan Morison on a largescale commission as part of the new development in Cardiff Bay. After the tragedy of losing Luna Park in a fire last year, we’re delighted to get the chance to work on something equally spectacular with them. Laetitia Clarke, our education intern, has been planning a schedule of exciting family activity to compliment the work. Details soon. David Mackintosh: The Curtain Preview • Blaenwelediad: Thu 28 April • 6pm • Iau 28 Ebrill Exhibition • Arddangosfa: Fri 29 April — Sun 19 June Gwe 29 Ebrill — Sul 19 Mehefin David Mackintosh’s disarmingly simple drawings are by turns naïve and macabre; mundane then exciting; graphically simple and yet expressively complex. Rendered in a limited palette of black, red, green and yellow gouache, the tone of his works is both intricate and elusive, their graphic presence sharing much of the language of cartoon or illustration. But there is something about the seemingly straightforward spontaneity of his marks — loaded as they are with salaciousness, humour and pathos — that suggests a further reading or intonates that the composition of the subject is anything but one-dimensional. Recently, the complexity of the drawings’ psychological landscapes has been matched with a formal expansion of the possibility of drawing beyond the limitations of the page. For Chapter, Mackintosh has created a number of new works that continue this expansion of his practice using animation, music and three-dimensional forms. David Mackintosh was born in Sunderland in 1966; he lives and works in Manchester. Recent solo presentations include Cornerhouse, Manchester (2010) and Spike Island, Bristol (2008) and he has exhibited in group shows at the Tegnebiennale, Norway (2010); Contemporary Art Society, London (2009) and Gallery Praxis Hagen, Berlin (2007). He has work in Collection Berge Madrid, Ernst & Young London and in private collections throughout Europe and America. David Mackintosh is represented by works|projects.

Assembly: Art in the Bar Lloyd Durling Fri 25 Feb — Sun 8 May • Gwe 25 Chwef — Sul 8 Mai Lloyd Durling’s modestly sized drawings are made from an innumerable amount of strokes that form a surface similar to thin washes of paint. Created using simple drawing tools — mainly felt-tip pen and graphite — the images are both animated and claustrophobic. For his exhibition at Chapter, Lloyd has made a number of monochromatic wood engravings of suspended still lifes. In these striking pieces he uses silhouettes to explore negative space, and give the impression of physical form by working back-to-front, filling in the space directly around the image. He has also produced a series of new felt-tip pen drawings which exploit colour, pattern and texture to great effect. In these drawings, apparent tranquillity is undercut by small pictorial details that suggest potential loss amid a quiet existence. Behind the inviting façade is the reality of how we could live with practically nothing and nothing practical. A limited edition postcard has been produced to coincide with the exhibition and is available from The Shop.
Biography Lloyd Durling was born in Solihull and lives and works in London. He is represented by Mermaid and Monster, Cardiff and Golden, Chicago. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Laughter Staggers On’, Golden, Chicago (2010); ‘Somewhere Better Than This’, Pippy Houldsworth, London; ‘Schadenfreude’, The Royal Academy of Arts Sackler Cafe, London (2006). Selected group shows include the ‘International Biennal of Engraving’, Aqui Terme, Italy (2010); ‘Sweet Dis/order’, Whitworth Art Gallery & Museum, Manchester (2009); ‘The Golden Record’, Collective Gallery, Edinburgh; ‘Scope Art Fair’, New York; ‘Republic, L’est’, London; ‘Salon 2007: New British Painting and Works on Paper’ (all 2007). Lloyd’s work is included in collections at the Whitworth Art Gallery & Museum, Manchester; Progressive Art Collection, USA; Nomura Bank, Japan and Fidelity PLC, London.

Q&A Name: Janek Alexander Job title: Director How long have you worked at Chapter? I was an actor with Dek Leverton’s Paupers Carnival and we appeared here in 1976. What was your first involvement with Chapter? I’d arrived an hour early for a show and was told to come back later. In a typical Chapter moment I bought my ticket and found myself minding the doors and handing out programmes. What’s your management style? There’s always another way. We hear you’re standing down in May. Will we still see you around the place? Yes, I will still be around working on projects. I have Parkinson’s, so one project will be a group to explore non-medical aspects of the condition. What advice will you give to your successor? Never forget to stop and admire the view. Tell us about a programme highlight of your time here? The Wooster Group in the 1980s were the most radical and exciting theatre group in the world. We brought them to Britain. They toured with a complicated and technically advanced set that was too big for our theatre. God bless them, they sawed the end of the set off and the show went ahead. It was a sensation.
Legend tells us that you’ve performed as a smurf? The Smurf was a satire on the seriousness of Dutch culture. Only it turned out that Smurfs were Belgian, not from Holland after all. So the rest of the commissioned pieces went to the Holland Festival, but the Smurf stayed home. Tell us about your own artistic credentials. Theatre director, author, performer — projects at ICA London, Mickery Amsterdam, Slovak theatre, LIFT, Seville. Directed three touring productions for Volcano Theatre. Directed for Ed Thomas’ Y Cwmni at Tramway Glasgow. Wrote, directed and performed in twelve projects at Chapter as Diamond Age Theatre Company including street theatre, dramas, comedies, recordings, cabaret. Performed with Paupers Carnival Theatre and Transitions Trust. Who would you like to play you in a film of your life? I’d choose Rhys Ifans, after seeing him as Peter Cook. He was in Chapter and I interrupted his coffee break to tell him how much I admired his achievement. I was back in my office when it dawned on me that he couldn’t have the foggiest idea who I was. Tell us a secret… Later this year a CD of a 1984 concert I gave will be available. Listen carefully on headphones and you can hear a robust argument develop in the auditorium on the merits of my performance. Tell us a joke… “The next train’s gone” (Will Hay)

Ranters Theatre Holiday Wed 30 March — Sat 2 April • 8pm • Mer 30 Mawrth — Sad 2 Ebrill Melbourne-based Ranters Theatre return to Chapter with their multi-award winning show. Gently provocative, meditative and strangely disarming, Holiday presents a moment of relaxation and quiet reflection between two men. Spontaneous, unaffected and affectingly real, innocent discussion becomes an exploration of private fantasy, hidden anxiety, personal mythology and other inexplicable behaviours. Concept and direction by Adriano Cortese; text by Raimondo Cortese; sound design and operation by David Franzke; lighting design by Niklas Pajanti; Set (adapted from original design) by Anna Tregloan; performed and co-devised by Paul Lum and Patrick Moffatt; company manager Alison Halit. £12/10/£8 This project has been assisted by the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria and by Arts House through the City of Melbourne and Arts Victoria.
“an extraordinary piece of theatre… sends the audience into the night refreshed and afloat on a sea of calm... the two performances are exquisitely judged.” Irish Independent “This is theatre of the moment, in which no word exists before it is uttered, no action before it is performed. There is no story in the sense of a developing narrative, just a series of crystalline moments that can leap from the boring to the beautiful in a breath.” Real Time Magazine

Sioned Huws Aomori Project: Of Landscapes Remembered Aomori Fri 8 + Sat 9 April • 8pm • Gwe 8 + Sad 9 Ebrill ‘Ao’ — blue or green, ‘mori’ — forest Aomori — place of blue, green forests Aomori is an area of Japan at the northernmost tip of Honshu Island, with short summers and long snowy winters. Forests of blue-green, soft linear mountains and seas of a deep navy blue enliven feelings with colour in autumn. In winter, repetitive silent snowfall arrives, transforming the landscape; the heartbeat slows down, the body is overwhelmed by a desire to rest, to lay horizontally in this blanket of white. The sounds, songs and dances of Tsugaru personify these landscapes. How do an environment, place and people inspire an artist’s work? This winter, choreographer Sioned Huws continued a series of residencies at Aomori Contemporary Art Centre, collaborating with a company of artists. This project has been developed between Aomori and Tokyo, in collaboration with dancers — Reina Kimura (who came to Chapter for the Aomori Project in 2008) and Yoshiya Ishikawa; musicians — Yuji Hasegawa and Yushin Hasegawa and minyo singer Kiyoko Goto. This work is presented in our Gallery as part of a UK tour. Supported by an Arts Council of Wales Creative Wales Ambassadors Award 2009, Chapter, Greenwich Dance, Galeri Caernarfon, Dawns i Bawb, Oriel Mostyn, ARTizan, Aomori Contemporary Art Centre, Morishita Studios, The National Lottery, Welsh Assembly Government, Wales Arts International, The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, EU Japan Fest, The Saison Foundation, Jerwood Space. £10/£8/£6

New Welsh Cinema Submarine Fri 1 — Thu 14 April • Gwe 1 — Iau 14 Ebrill UK/2010/94mins/15. Dir: Richard Ayoade. With Craig Roberts, Sally Hawkins, Noah Taylor, Paddy Considine.
Oliver Tate has two main objectives: to lose his virginity to the girl of his dreams before his 16th birthday and to stop his mother from leaving his father for her new-age next door neighbour. All of this while trying desperately to grow up in Swansea, as the love of his life introduces him to low level pyromania and dictates to him what he should be writing about her in his diary. Richard Ayoade’s (Nathan Barley, IT Crowd) delightful directorial debut is based on Joe Dunthorne’s critically-lauded novel, detailing the trials, tribulations and range of inappropriate affectations of this deliciously awkward young man.
“On this evidence, Ayoade could be Britain’s answer to Wes Anderson.” — Total Film

True Grit Fri 25 March — Thu 7 April • Gwe 25 Mawrth — Iau 7 Ebrill USA/2010/110mins/15. Dir: Joel and Ethan Coen. With Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, Josh Brolin, Matt Damon.
Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the tough, hard drinking U.S. Marshal, “Rooster” Cogburn. They are joined by talkative Texas Ranger Laboeuf, who wants to bring Chaney back to Texas for the reward money. The plain spoken humour, bold storytelling and rough beauty of Charles Portis’ classic American novel are brought to the fore in this cracking adaptation from the Coen brothers.

Archipelago Fri 1 — Thu 7 April • Gwe 1 — Iau 7 Ebrill UK/2010/114mins/15. Dir: Joanna Hogg. With Tom Hiddleston, Kate Fahy, Lydia Leonard.
The eagerly awaited follow-up to Joanna Hogg’s critically acclaimed debut Unrelated follows an upper middle-class family on a getaway on the idyllic Isles of Scilly, before the son Edward embarks on a charity expedition to Africa. Edward’s father’s attendance is eagerly anticipated, although sister Cynthia appears to be present under some duress, going through dutiful motions with her doting mother, being tutored in oil painting and taking picnics. Gradually, deep fractures within the family begin to surface and Hogg makes astute observations on the malaise of the upper middle-class, extracting sometimes painful drama from incidental events. Archipelago confirms Hogg as one of the most intriguing voices in modern British cinema.

Bad Film Club Lady Frankenstein Sun 3 April • Sul 3 Ebrill Italy/1971/84mins/18. Dir: Mel Welles, Aureliano Luppi. With Joseph Cotten, Rosalba Neri, Paul Muller.
The Bad Film Club crew are weighing in to celebrate Chapter’s 40th birthday in the only way they know how — by lending their irreverent live DVD-style commentary to a terrible movie from 1971. When Dr Frankenstein is killed by the monster he created, his daughter and Marshall the lab assistant continue with his diabolical experiments. It seems only right that they should find love over the attempted reanimation of corpses; their problem is that Marshall is getting on a bit. The only rational solution is to transplant his brain into the slow, but well-meaning servant Stephen’s body. Let’s hope that nothing ruins their love… like the return of Frankenstein’s monster, hell-bent on seeking revenge.

The notion that so much contemporary art is actually rubbish is given a literal airing in this extraordinary documentary featuring the Brazilian artist Vik Muniz, who is renowned for working with discarded materials. British filmmaker Lucy Walker (Devil’s Playground, Countdown to Zero) follows the artist as he collaborates with some of the Rio slum dwellers who eke out a living by scavenging for food and re-useable items on the world’s largest rubbish dump. Waste Land skilfully brings together the back-stories of these impoverished characters, with Muniz’s singular artistic vision to present us with an inspiring account of lives on the margins of the global economy, and the transformative power of art.

Sun 3 + Tue 5 April • Sul 3 + Maw 5 Ebrill
Sun 17 + Tue 19 April • Sul 17 + Maw 19 Ebrill
UK/1960/101mins/18. Dir: Michael Powell. With Karlheinz Bohm, Anna Massey, Moira Shearer.
USA/2005/124mins/18. Dir: Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino. With Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Benicio Del Toro, Mickey Rourke.
From the acclaimed director of A Matter of Life and Death and The Red Shoes, this was one of the most controversial films ever released in Britain, which nearly ended the director’s career, but created a masterpiece of psychological terror. By day, Mark Lewis works as a modest focus-puller in a film studio supplementing his income by shooting glamour photographs for a seedy Soho newsagent. By night he stalks the dark streets seeking victims so that he can feed his gruesome obsession — filming the face of mortal fear, moments before death.
“brilliant satirical insight into the neurotic, pornographic element in the act of filming, more relevant than ever in the age of reality television and CCTV” — The Guardian
M Sun 10 + Tue 12 April • Sul 10 + Maw 12 Ebrill Germany/1931/110mins/PG. Dir: Fritz Lang. With Peter Lorre, Otto Wernicke.
Fritz Lang’s first sound film, and the one that launched German cinema into a new era, is an expressionist classic. Peter Lorre delivers an unforgettable performance as a psychopathic child-murderer who, after evading the Berlin police, is caught by the city’s criminals who find that his activities are having an effect on their own.
Opposite page: The Last picture Show (main image). Clockwise from top left: Peeping Tom, M, Sin City
Adapted from Frank Miller’s neo-noir cult graphic novels, Sin City tells four ultra-stylised tales of crime, revenge and corruption. Basin City’s citizens take the law into their own hands to avenge the death of a lover, thwart the actions of a deformed paedophile and rectify a miscarriage of justice. It’s beautifully filmed to reference the imagery of the original novels and shows the need for often flawed heroes in the face of unending, violent corruption.
The Last Picture Show Sun 24 - Tue 26 April • Sul 24 - Maw 26 Ebrill USA/1971/118mins/15. Dir: Peter Bogdanovich. With Timoth Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Cybil Shepherd.
This Oscar-winning film is a wonderfully tense study of 1950s life in a bleak and isolated Texas town which is dying both economically and culturally. Based on Larry McMurtry’s semiautobiographical novel it follows the friendship of two high school football stars, as they come to realise that their hopes of leaving this claustrophobic town for more exciting prospects are becoming more limited by the day. With fantastic performances all round, the film introduced us to Cybil Shepherd, who plays the pretty but wayward young woman who dumps her failing ex-football star boyfriend and beds the richest boy in town.

Llygaid Sgwâr Gan Philip Wyn Jones I ddathlu pen-blwydd Chapter yn ddeugain oed fe awn ni ‘nôl i 1971. Ym Mhrydain, ffilm ddiweddaraf Joseph Losey yw The Go-Between, atgof am garwriaeth gudd yn y cyfnod Edwardaidd. Alan Bates a Julie Christie sy’n portreadu’r cariadon. Bydd hon yn cystadlu am y Balmwydden Aur yng Ngŵyl Ffilmiau Cannes eleni a’i phrif gystadleuydd fydd Death in Venice (Luchino Visconti). Gwelwn garwriaeth gudd o fath arall yn ffilm John Schlesinger, Sunday Bloody Sunday. Mae gan ŵr ifanc ddau gariad; meddyg (Peter Finch) a gweinyddwraig (Glenda Jackson). Dyw’r sefyllfa hynod hon ddim, bellach, yn un ddadleuol. Ond dyma dair ffilm Brydeinig sy’n ddadleuol iawn. Cernyw yw cefndir ffilm dreisgar Sam Peckinpah, Straw Dogs. Mae Dustin Hoffman a Susan George yn portreadu cwpl sydd wedi symud i Gernyw fel y gall y gŵr barhau â’i astudiaethau academaidd mewn heddwch ond mae’r brodorion yn eu herlid yn ddidrugaredd. Mae’r gŵr tawel hwn yn penderfynu talu’r pwyth yn ôl. Bu rhai’n dadlau na ddylai’r sensor fod wedi rhoi tystysgrif i hon oherwydd natur eithafol y dial. Disgrifiwyd ffilm newydd Stanley Kubrick, A Clockwork Orange, fel “ffilm arswyd eithafol o feiddgar ac annynol”. Mae Malcolm McDowell yn portreadu Alex, llanc a garcharwyd am dreisio a llofruddio. Ar ôl cael ei ryddhau mae’n sylwi fod Prydain bellach yn gymdeithas dreisgar drwyddi draw. Mae sôn y bydd Kubrick yn tynnu hon o’r sinemâu ar fyrder. Cafodd ei arswydo wrth sylwi fod llawer o bobl ifanc yn ystyried bod Alex yn arwr. Mae ffilm ddiweddaraf Ken Russell, The Devils, yn darlunio digwyddiad honedig yn yr ail ganrif ar bymtheg pan feddiannwyd lleiandy gan y diafol. Mae manylion cignoeth y meddiannu wedi codi gwrychyn sawl beirniad ac mae rhai’n dadlau fod angen tynhau ar y modd y mae ffilmiau’n cael eu sensro ym Mhrydain. Mae ambell ffilm ysgafn ar gael! Arswyd law yn llaw a hiwmor â gawn ni yn The Abominable Dr Phibes (Robert Fuest). Mae Vincent Price yn portreadu cerddor disglair sy’n defnyddio dulliau’r Hen Destament i ddial ar y llawfeddygon a fethodd ag achub bywyd ei wraig. Mae The Railway Children (Lionel Jeffries) yn mynd â ni yn ôl i’r un cyfnod â The Go-Between. Ar ôl i’w gŵr gael ei garcharu am ysbïo mae gwraig (Dinah Sheridan) yn mynd â’i theulu i fyw i bentref gwledig lle mae’r plant, gan gynnwys Jenny Agutter, yn dod yn gyfeillgar gyda’r gŵr caredig (Bernard Cribbins) sy’n gweithio yn yr orsaf reilffordd gyfagos. Dyma ffilm sy’n addas ar gyfer gwylwyr o bob oedran. O’r Eidal y daw dwy ffilm fwyaf trawiadol y Cyfandir. Mae Pasolini am wneud tair ffilm fydd yn Dathlu Bywyd. Decameron Boccaccio yw’r ffilm gyntaf. Mae’n gyforiog o hwyl a sbri a rhyw. Nesaf fe gawn ni Canterbury Tales Chaucer ac yna Nosau Arabia. Myfyrio ar farwolaeth y mae Visconti yn Death in Venice. Mae Dirk Bogarde yn portreadu cyfansoddwr sy’n oedi yn Fenis er bod pla ar fin cyrraedd yno. Yr hyn sy’n ei gadw yno yw ei obsesiwn gyda llanc hardd. Ai hon fydd yn cipio’r Balmwydden Aur yn Fenis? Twoscore Artist Films
Fri 8 — Thu 14 April • Gwe 8 — Iau 14 Ebrill
As part of our 40th birthday celebrations, we’re collaborating with Outcasting to programme a selection of moving image work from around the globe, giving you a taste of experimental film in the intimacy of our cinemas. Selected shorts will be screened before main films throughout April.
UK/2010/108mins/15. Dir: Darren Aronofsky. With Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey.
Winning Natalie Portman the Best Actress award at this year’s Oscars, this psychological thriller focuses on the relationship between Nina, a veteran ballet dancer, and Lily, a new rival, as they compete for the lead part in a production of Swan Lake. The ballet requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace and the Black Swan who represents guile and sensuality. While Nina fits the White Swan perfectly, Lily is the personification of the Black Swan; and as Nina attempts to get more in touch with her dark side she develops a recklessness that threatens to destroy her. Visionary director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Requiem For A Dream) takes us on a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect.

Oranges and Sunshine Fri 8 — Thu 21 April • Gwe 8 — Iau 21 Ebrill UK/Australia/2010/105mins/15. Dir: Jim Loach. With Emily Watson, Hugo Weaving, David Wenham.
Jim Loach’s highly anticipated debut feature is the true story of Margaret Humphreys, a social worker from Nottingham in the late 80s who uncovered one of the most significant social scandals in recent times: the forced migration of over 130,000 children in care from the UK to Australia and other Commonwealth countries. Almost singlehandedly, and with little regard for her own well-being, Margaret reunited thousands of children with the parents they had been told were dead, and brought authorities to account through worldwide attention to an extraordinary miscarriage of justice. Being promised oranges and sunshine in their new life, many children as young as four years old were subjected to appalling abuse, hard labour and life in institutions.

Route Irish Fri 8 — Thu 14 April • Gwe 8 — Iau 14 Ebrill UK/2010/109mins/15. Dir: Ken Loach. With Andrew Lowe, Mark Womack, John Bishop.
5-year-old Fergus met Frankie on his first day at school, in Liverpool 1976. As teenagers they skipped school and drank cider on the ferry over the River Mersey, dreaming of travelling the world. Little did Fergus realise his dream would come true as a highly trained member of the SAS. After resigning in 2004, Fergus persuaded Frankie (by now an ex-Para) to join his security team in Baghdad. Together they risked their lives in a city steeped in violence, terror and greed, and awash with billions of US dollars. In September 2007, Frankie died on Route Irish, the most dangerous road in the world. Back in Liverpool, a grief-stricken Fergus rejects the official explanation and begins his own investigation into his soul mate’s death. Only Rachel, Frankie’s partner, grasps the depth of Fergus’s sorrow, and the lethal possibilities of his fury. As he approaches the truth behind Frankie’s death, Fergus struggles to find his old self and the happiness he shared with Frankie twenty years earlier.

Unhappy in her marriage, Sally develops a crush on her handsome art gallery owner boss, while Roy, a novelist nervously awaiting the response to his latest manuscript, becomes moonstruck over a mystery woman who catches his gaze through a nearby window.

Inside Job
Fri 15 — Thu 21 April • Gwe 15 — Iau 21 Ebrill USA/2010/109mins/12A. Dir: Charles Ferguson. Narrated by Matt Damon.
Winning this year’s Oscar for best Documentary Feature, Inside Job gives a forensic analysis of the financial crisis focusing on events in the US and looking at the wider repercussions for the rest of the world. Director Charles Ferguson has access to an amazing range of financial insiders, from banking institutions to the IMF, and follows the roots of the crisis from its beginnings more than a decade ago. It’s a savage indictment of greed, corruption and hubris at the highest levels, with a sophisticated, witty and intelligent tone, making the message even more effective. This film could do for the financial industries what An Inconvenient Truth did for climate change, as despite its professionalism and craft, this is ultimately a call to arms in the most explicit terms.

Returning after a popular run in March, this haunting adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s acclaimed novel follows Kathy H as she recounts her childhood growing up at Hailsham, an exclusive, seemingly progressive boarding school in the English countryside. When new teacher Miss Lucy reveals the true nature of the school, Kathy and her two best friends Ruth and Tommy must come to terms with the awful truth of who they really are and the terrible fate that awaits them. As the three friends reach adulthood and leave Hailsham, a love triangle forms that threatens to pull them apart forever…

Meek’s Cutoff Fri 22 — Thu 28 April • Gwe 22 — Iau 28 Ebrill USA/2010/104mins/ctba. Dir: Kelly Reichardt. With Michelle Williams, Shirley Henderson.
On the Portland-Oregon Trail of 1845 a wagon train of settlers take a Native American wanderer hostage and are torn between trusting their curmudgeonly, tall-tale-telling guide whose shortcut seems to have got them lost, and taking a leap of faith with the man who has always been seen as a natural born enemy. The award-winning director of Wendy and Lucy, combines devastating desert landscapes with an intimate survival drama in this stark, original take on the American Western with gripping performances all round.

Ballast Fri 22 — Thu 28 April • Gwe 22 — Iau 28 Ebrill USA/2008/96mins/15. Dir: Lance Hammer. With Michael J Smith, Jim Myron Ross, Tarra Riggs.
In the cold winter light of the Mississippi Delta, three people stumble under the weight of a shared tragedy. The death of a young man has left his twin brother, Lawrence, paralyzed with grief and his wife too exhausted from her low-paid work to see that their 12 year old is drifting into the orbit of local teenagers. When sudden violence forces mother and son to leave their home in the middle of the night, they flee to Lawrence’s property and while this provides a safe harbour, it quickly rekindles the fury of a longstanding conflict between them. Multi-award-winning writer/ director Lance Hammer teamed up with British Cinematographer Lol Crawley (Better Things, Four Lions) and a gifted cast of local, nonprofessional actors to create a profoundly humane story of lost souls seeking solace in the most unlikely of places.

Essential Killing Fri 22 — Thu 28 April • Gwe 22 — Iau 28 Ebrill Poland/2010/83mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Jerzy Skolimowski. With Vincent Gallo, Emmanuelle Seigner, David L Price.
Captured by the US military in Afghanistan as a member of the Taliban after killing three American soldiers, Mohammed is transported to a secret detention centre in Europe. When the vehicle he is riding in crashes, he finds himself free and on the run in a snow-blanketed forest, a world away from the desert home he knew. Relentlessly pursued by an army that does not officially exist, Mohammed must confront the necessity to kill in order to survive. In this visually stunning and often challenging film, Jerzy Skolimowski explores notions of human endurance and ideology while at times eschewing the need for realism and traditional narrative.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams [2D] Fri 29 April — Thu 5 May • Gwe 29 Ebrill — Iau 5 Mai USA/France/2010/90mins/U. Dir: Werner Herzog.
Gaining exclusive access to the cave paintings of the Chauvet Pont d’Arc in southern France, Werner Herzog was tasked with documenting the 30,000-year-old drawings and paintings for the symbolic cost of one Euro. And he doesn’t disappoint. Using only a minimum of light and a custom-built hand-held camera he succeeds not only in filming but in bringing the images to life with his wonderfully idiosyncratic mix of fascination and humour. Making use of the contours of these ‘moving’ rock paintings as the starting point for a philosophical meditation on the origins of the art of film, he also explores questions of human existence.

British director Duncan Jones follows his debut feature Moon with this science fiction thriller about a decorated soldier, Captain Colter Stevens, who wakes up in the body of an unknown man. He discovers that he’s part of a mission to find the bomber of the Chicago commuter train he’s travelling on, and is involved in a government experiment which enables him to cross over into another man’s identity. With a second, much larger bomb threatening to kill millions, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack.
The Extraordinary Adventures Of Adele Blanc-Sec Fri 29 April — Thu 5 May • Gwe 29 Ebrill — Iau 5 Mai France/2010/107mins/subtitled/12A. Dir: Luc Besson. With Louise Bourgoin, Mathieu Amalric.
In 2003, Valerie Plame’s status as a CIA agent was revealed by the White House as an alleged response to her husband’s article in the New York Times claiming the US had manipulated intelligence about WMD to justify the invasion of Iraq. Based on true events, this gripping conspiracy thriller explores what happens when a secret agent is ‘outed’, leaving her international contacts vulnerable, her home life and career in a mess and her life in danger.
Luc Besson turns his comic and fantastical imagination to the extraordinary adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec. Set in the early part of the 20th century, the story follows the popular novelist and her dealings with would-be suitors, the police, monsters and a host of other distractions. Legendary cartoonist Jacques Tardi’s original stories perfectly recreate the intrigue, romance and excitement of one of the most tumultuous periods in recent history. + Special Preview Screening Sat 16 April • Sad 16 Ebrill As part of our 40th birthday celebrations we’re bringing you a special preview screening, a couple of weeks before the film goes on general release.

I love spring! Last month I planted some veggies for the summer and I can’t wait to be eating them al fresco. On our menu at Chapter we’re slowly changing the more wintery fare for some lovely dishes incorporating what’s fresh and seasonal at the moment. I’m planning on adding one of my favourite warm weather dishes to the menu — escabeche is seared fish which is marinated in a lemon juice, fresh herb and chilli dressing and served hot or cold the next day. I love this with fresh green salad, sugar snap peas or tabouleh. Another cracking fish dish is our grilled mackerel with roasted mushrooms, peppers, onions and courgettes in homemade arrabiata sauce, topped with salsa verde and served with side salad. Bon appetit! Spring has well and truly sprung, so why not accompany one of our new seasonal menu choices with a glass of refreshing fruit beer? Timmermans is one of only a handful of traditional lambic breweries on the outskirts of Brussels. Lambic beer is a spontaneously fermenting wheat beer to which no yeast is added and casks are left open overnight to collect natural micro-organisms. Fruit is then added for a second fermentation and to give the beer its distinctive taste and aroma. We stock cherry, raspberry and peach Timmermans in bottles and we now have strawberry Timmermans on draft, so treat yourself to something a bit different and celebrate the sunshine*!
