Chapter 40 Celebrations Fri 15 — Sun 17 April • Gwe 15 — Sul 17 Ebrill On Friday 15 April 1971, at precisely 3.45pm, the first ever Chapter board meeting was held and our constitution was signed. During the coming 12 months we’re programming a series of special events to celebrate 40 years at the forefront of the European cultural scene; 40 years of creating and presenting groundbreaking, internationally acclaimed work in cinema, theatre and the visual arts; 40 years as a cultural hub, a meeting place of ideas, a safe and open space for creative minds. We’re kicking off the celebrations with an action packed weekend of art, entertainment and good times. And we’d be delighted if you’d join us for some or all of the weekend’s activities, including a children’s street party, live music and cabaret performances, a 70s disco and special birthday versions of your favourite Chapter events. We’re adding some current Chapter bits and pieces to the mix and re-burying it somewhere suitable for a robotbuilder to dig up in the future.

Party Time Fri 15 April • 6pm • Gwe 15 Ebrill VIPs, speeches, 70s inspired nibbles, fizz, balloons and forty (!) free birthday cakes (courtesy of Simply Steve’s). Come along and reminisce with a host of luminaries from Chapter’s illustrious 40-years. From 7.30pm you’ll be invited to let your hair down with some 70s tunes.

Drones Comedy Club Fri 15 April • 8.30pm • Gwe 15 Ebrill The Drones crew have been keeping you amused for many happy years with the best local and touring comedians, and tonight they’re getting together for a special birthday-inspired laughathon. £3.50 (on the door)

Fair dawn beyond the doors of death Fri 15 April • 11pm • Gwe 15 Ebrill Under the guise of his laptop-wielding alter ego Zwolf, Cardiff-based composer Tom Raybould (Arc Vertiac) performs a live electronic soundtrack to a smorgasbord of cinematic visuals and real time improvised film manipulation (provided by Nic Finch and Casey Raymond). This event takes place in Cinema 1 — be careful which seat you choose as it could lead to unwelcome audience participation. This multimedia event will contain strobe effects, unsuitable images and irregular subsonic frequencies not suitable for pace-makers. £3 Soundcloud.com/zwolf

Sat 16 + Sun 17 April • 10am — 4pm Sad 16 + Sul 17 Ebrill We’ve invited makers from across Wales to exhibit and sell their wares — you can expect an eclectic and original showcase, from bugs in resin to knitted vintage inspired garments. There will also be an interactive element to the fair with the opportunity to have a go at making something yourself! Contributors include Random Vintage (recycled jewellery); Calon Company (vintage fabric home-ware); Cool4Cats (papercraft automata kits); My Little Card Company; and Kate Dumbleton (Welsh jewellery).

Sat 16 April • 11am — 4pm • Sad 16 Ebrill Masterminded by our lovely gallery team, this creative, Easter-themed, drop in session is perfect for children of any age. No booking necessary — just come along to the cinema foyer at any time between 11am and 4pm.

Guerrilla Craft Sat 16 + Sun 17 April • 10.30am — 4.30pm Sad 16 + Sul 17 Ebrill A number of professional makers and artists are running craft workshops outside our front entrance and helping to create a textile garden. Contributors include Michelle Griffiths — tie dye workshops using fabric and natural plant materials; Louise Bird — Huge Garden Knitting Nancy (circular weaving and creation of woollen flowers); Claire Cawte & Becky Williams — feltmaking flowers; and Emma & Louise Steverson — willow fun flowers.

Cardiff Storytelling Circle Sat 16 April • 11.30am + 1pm • Sad 16 Ebrill A wonderful way for our younger regulars to while away some time before or after the screenings of Tangled (see p47) — Cardiff Storytelling Circle are spinning yarns free of charge. Their regular monthly event on Sun 3 April at 8pm invites you to share and listen to stories in relaxed company, and costs £3 (on the door).

Outcasting are collaborating with us to programme a selection of moving image work from around the globe, giving you a taste of experimental film in the intimacy of a cinema setting. Selected films will be screened before our main films throughout April. Featured artists include Anthony Shapland (The Life of Ray Cook), Huw Andrews (Kezar) and Erica Scourti (Trailer Truths). Chapter 40 Food Between 5-9pm on Friday and Saturday our café will be serving up a special 70s-inspired menu. The time that taste forgot? Or the halcyon days of hearty cuisine? Come along and decide for yourselves. We’re firing up the barbeque on Sunday from 12-5pm, with treats for both meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Cross your fingers for some nice spring weather…

Special Preview Screenings As part of our birthday celebrations, we’ve joined forces with BAFTA Cymru to bring you a couple of special film previews. On Fri 15 April at 6pm we have Third Star, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Hugh Bonneville, which also features a postscreening Q&A with writer/producer Vaughan Sivell (see p29); and on Sat 16 April at 6pm we have a pre-release showing of Luc Besson’s The Extraordinary Adventures Of Adele Blanc-Sec (see p45).

Janek Alexander Sun 17 April • 12pm • Sul 17 Ebrill Chapter’s new wave of performers in the 1970s included Janek Alexander. Janek has been Chapter’s director since 1996 and is standing down this year — see p13 for a Q&A with the man himself. This performance lecture follows on from his appearance at last year’s Experimentica festival, and features previously unseen video and rare recordings as he explores the early days of experimentation at Chapter.

Art Car-Bootique Sun 17 April • 10am — 4pm • Sun 17 Ebrill Chapter and Something Creatives (the minds behind Milgi and Cardiff Arts Institute) bring you Cardiff’s very first Art Car-Bootique. Taking place in our back car park, it’ll be the most eccentric and coolest car-boot sale you’ve ever been to, with 50 pitches of art, fashion and performance. Confirmed contributors include Holly Davey; Mermaid and Monster; Warp; Cerbyd; Supersaurus Swansea; and Wally French. We’re also expecting the SŴN gang to bring along a record store; Squeaky Hill to turn up in their stretch limo with a quiz in the back; CineCabaGoGo will be making an appearance; and Roath’s Northcote Lane market are setting up a couple of stalls. A special programme of live acoustic music kicks off at 12pm to tickle your ear drums in a sunny Sunday style. Confirmed acts include local legend John Mouse, harp-yielding songstress Georgia Ruth, alt-folksters No Thee No Ess, the lovely Eugene Capper and friends, and a group from the popular Cardiff Ukulele Nights.

Chapter 40 in the Gallery We’ve got a great visual arts programme lined up over the next 12 months to celebrate our 40th birthday, with UK premieres, guest curators, large-scale themed exhibitions and off-site projects. At the end of April we kick off with a solo exhibition of newly commissioned works by David Mackintosh (see p11). For June, we’ve invited Bristol-based gallerist Simon Morrissey to curate an exhibition that includes work by Sarah Dobai, Mark Dean, Andy Holden and more; and in September watch out for WITH collective who will be taking over the building! At Christmas we’re presenting a solo exhibition by German artist Paloma Varga Weisz who will be making new work for Chapter; and the New Year brings a large curated exhibition entitled ‘Nothing, Like Something, Happens Anywhere’ which includes some big international names, so watch this space. Outside of the gallery, Lauren Jury continues to curate our lively programme of Art in the Bar. In 2011 she will be working with Lloyd Durling, Anabelle Shelton, Melanie Counsell and Elizabeth McDonald and is currently planning more site specific works for your pleasure. Lauren is also curating her first exhibition for the gallery in the spring — The Institute of Critical Zoologists are collaborating with local experts and institutions and their exhibition looks set to be a highlight of our Birthday year. The lightbox at the front of the building continues to be a key feature of our programme and commissions will be revealed soon, including both local and international names. Away from Chapter, we will be working with Heather & Ivan Morison on a largescale commission as part of the new development in Cardiff Bay. After the tragedy of losing Luna Park in a fire last year, we’re delighted to get the chance to work on something equally spectacular with them. Laetitia Clarke, our education intern, has been planning a schedule of exciting family activity to compliment the work. Details soon. David Mackintosh: The Curtain Preview • Blaenwelediad: Thu 28 April • 6pm • Iau 28 Ebrill Exhibition • Arddangosfa: Fri 29 April — Sun 19 June Gwe 29 Ebrill — Sul 19 Mehefin David Mackintosh’s disarmingly simple drawings are by turns naïve and macabre; mundane then exciting; graphically simple and yet expressively complex. Rendered in a limited palette of black, red, green and yellow gouache, the tone of his works is both intricate and elusive, their graphic presence sharing much of the language of cartoon or illustration. But there is something about the seemingly straightforward spontaneity of his marks — loaded as they are with salaciousness, humour and pathos — that suggests a further reading or intonates that the composition of the subject is anything but one-dimensional. Recently, the complexity of the drawings’ psychological landscapes has been matched with a formal expansion of the possibility of drawing beyond the limitations of the page. For Chapter, Mackintosh has created a number of new works that continue this expansion of his practice using animation, music and three-dimensional forms. David Mackintosh was born in Sunderland in 1966; he lives and works in Manchester. Recent solo presentations include Cornerhouse, Manchester (2010) and Spike Island, Bristol (2008) and he has exhibited in group shows at the Tegnebiennale, Norway (2010); Contemporary Art Society, London (2009) and Gallery Praxis Hagen, Berlin (2007). He has work in Collection Berge Madrid, Ernst & Young London and in private collections throughout Europe and America. David Mackintosh is represented by works|projects.

Assembly: Art in the Bar Lloyd Durling Fri 25 Feb — Sun 8 May • Gwe 25 Chwef — Sul 8 Mai Lloyd Durling’s modestly sized drawings are made from an innumerable amount of strokes that form a surface similar to thin washes of paint. Created using simple drawing tools — mainly felt-tip pen and graphite — the images are both animated and claustrophobic. For his exhibition at Chapter, Lloyd has made a number of monochromatic wood engravings of suspended still lifes. In these striking pieces he uses silhouettes to explore negative space, and give the impression of physical form by working back-to-front, filling in the space directly around the image. He has also produced a series of new felt-tip pen drawings which exploit colour, pattern and texture to great effect. In these drawings, apparent tranquillity is undercut by small pictorial details that suggest potential loss amid a quiet existence. Behind the inviting façade is the reality of how we could live with practically nothing and nothing practical. A limited edition postcard has been produced to coincide with the exhibition and is available from The Shop.

Biography Lloyd Durling was born in Solihull and lives and works in London. He is represented by Mermaid and Monster, Cardiff and Golden, Chicago. Q&A Name: Janek Alexander Job title: Director How long have you worked at Chapter? I was an actor with Dek Leverton’s Paupers Carnival and we appeared here in 1976. What was your first involvement with Chapter? I’d arrived an hour early for a show and was told to come back later. In a typical Chapter moment I bought my ticket and found myself minding the doors and handing out programmes. What’s your management style? There’s always another way. We hear you’re standing down in May. Will we still see you around the place? Yes, I will still be around working on projects. I have Parkinson’s, so one project will be a group to explore non-medical aspects of the condition. What advice will you give to your successor? Never forget to stop and admire the view. Tell us about a programme highlight of your time here? The Wooster Group in the 1980s were the most radical and exciting theatre group in the world. We brought them to Britain. They toured with a complicated and technically advanced set that was too big for our theatre. God bless them, they sawed the end of the set off and the show went ahead. It was a sensation.

Legend tells us that you’ve performed as a smurf? The Smurf was a satire on the seriousness of Dutch culture. Only it turned out that Smurfs were Belgian, not from Holland after all. So the rest of the commissioned pieces went to the Holland Festival, but the Smurf stayed home. Tell us about your own artistic credentials. Theatre director, author, performer — projects at ICA London, Mickery Amsterdam, Slovak theatre, LIFT, Seville. Directed three touring productions for Volcano Theatre. Directed for Ed Thomas’ Y Cwmni at Tramway Glasgow. Wrote, directed and performed in twelve projects at Chapter as Diamond Age Theatre Company including street theatre, dramas, comedies, recordings, cabaret. Performed with Paupers Carnival Theatre and Transitions Trust. Who would you like to play you in a film of your life? I’d choose Rhys Ifans, after seeing him as Peter Cook. He was in Chapter and I interrupted his coffee break to tell him how much I admired his achievement. I was back in my office when it dawned on me that he couldn’t have the foggiest idea who I was. Tell us a secret… Later this year a CD of a 1984 concert I gave will be available. Sioned Huws Aomori Project: Of Landscapes Remembered Aomori Fri 8 + Sat 9 April • 8pm • Gwe 8 + Sad 9 Ebrill ‘Ao’ — blue or green, ‘mori’ — forest Aomori — place of blue, green forests Aomori is an area of Japan at the northernmost tip of Honshu Island, with short summers and long snowy winters. Forests of blue-green, soft linear mountains and seas of a deep navy blue enliven feelings with colour in autumn. In winter, repetitive silent snowfall arrives, transforming the landscape; the heartbeat slows down, the body is overwhelmed by a desire to rest, to lay horizontally in this blanket of white. The sounds, songs and dances of Tsugaru personify these landscapes. How do an environment, place and people inspire an artist’s work? This winter, choreographer Sioned Huws continued a series of residencies at Aomori Contemporary Art Centre, collaborating with a company of artists. This project has been developed between Aomori and Tokyo, in collaboration with dancers — Reina Kimura (who came to Chapter for the Aomori Project in 2008) and Yoshiya Ishikawa; musicians — Yuji Hasegawa and Yushin Hasegawa and minyo singer Kiyoko Goto. This work is presented in our Gallery as part of a UK tour. SWDFAS Lecture The Other Whistler Thu 14 April • 2pm • Iau 14 Ebrill Ann Clements’ lecture for the South Wales Decorative and Fine Arts Society explores the life and work of Rex Whistler (1905-1944), a brilliant but undervalued artist. His achievements include portraits, book illustrations, theatre designs and murals, such as those at Plas Newydd, Anglesey, and ‘In Pursuit of Rare Meats’ in the restaurant at the Tate Gallery, Millbank. Superb draughtsmanship, a fantastic imagination, and an innate gift for decoration and wit are hallmarks of his style. £5 (on the door)

Chapter Pub Quiz Sun 24 April • 7.30pm • Sul 24 Ebrill This interactive, five-round, pub quiz features questions which have in some way been inspired by our May programme. Set up in the cinema foyer with a full wall projection, the quiz includes music and film clips and still images. There are table rounds, bonus questions, beer questions (and bonus-beer questions). The perfect opportunity to exercise your grey cells while exploring the hidden gems that Chapter has to offer.

Voices of Partition Women and Partition Tue 5 April • 7.30pm • Maw 5 Ebrill Part of the Sangat series of events, this evening explores the stories of women during the Partition of British India in 1947, uncovering a silent history of violence, migration and resettlement. Often sheltered from private and public areas, women created their own space during this complex and traumatic time. The event features music from Panjabi folk singer Sanyogita Kumari and a talk by Dr Pippa Virdee, senior lecturer in modern south Asian history at De Montfort University. Chaired by Frances Medley of the Magdalena Project (the international network for women in contemporary theatre). Free

Six Glass Fingers Bandscape Thu 14 April • 9pm • Iau 14 Ebrill To coincide with our 40th birthday celebrations, Chapter employee and mastermind of Six Glass Fingers, Oliver Mitchell is directing a short film showcasing local musicians playing around the building — a diverse mix of genres in a variety of locations, from old school classrooms to newly renovated function rooms. From folk to improvised soundscape, the musicians will take inspiration from the surroundings, lending a unique soundtrack to their environment. The film will be shown on a temporary cinema screen in the box office. Free

Richard Ayoade’s (Nathan Barley, IT Crowd) delightful directorial debut is based on Joe Dunthorne’s critically-lauded novel, detailing the trials, tribulations and range of inappropriate affectations of this deliciously awkward young man.

The eagerly awaited follow-up to Joanna Hogg’s critically acclaimed debut Unrelated follows an upper middle-class family on a getaway on the idyllic Isles of Scilly, before the son Edward embarks on a charity expedition to Africa. Edward’s father’s attendance is eagerly anticipated, although sister Cynthia appears to be present under some duress, going through dutiful motions with her doting mother, being tutored in oil painting and taking picnics. Gradually, deep fractures within the family begin to surface and Hogg makes astute observations on the malaise of the upper middle-class, extracting sometimes painful drama from incidental events. Archipelago confirms Hogg as one of the most intriguing voices in modern British cinema.

The Bad Film Club crew are weighing in to celebrate Chapter’s 40th birthday in the only way they know how — by lending their irreverent live DVD-style commentary to a terrible movie from 1971. When Dr Frankenstein is killed by the monster he created, his daughter and Marshall the lab assistant continue with his diabolical experiments. It seems only right that they should find love over the attempted reanimation of corpses; their problem is that Marshall is getting on a bit. The only rational solution is to transplant his brain into the slow, but well-meaning servant Stephen’s body. Let’s hope that nothing ruins their love… like the return of Frankenstein’s monster, hell-bent on seeking revenge.

The notion that so much contemporary art is actually rubbish is given a literal airing in this extraordinary documentary featuring the Brazilian artist Vik Muniz, who is renowned for working with discarded materials. British filmmaker Lucy Walker (Devil’s Playground, Countdown to Zero) follows the artist as he collaborates with some of the Rio slum dwellers who eke out a living by scavenging for food and re-useable items on the world’s largest rubbish dump. Waste Land skilfully brings together the back-stories of these impoverished characters, with Muniz’s singular artistic vision to present us with an inspiring account of lives on the margins of the global economy, and the transformative power of art.

Adapted from Frank Miller’s neo-noir cult graphic novels, Sin City tells four ultra-stylised tales of crime, revenge and corruption. Basin City’s citizens take the law into their own hands to avenge the death of a lover, thwart the actions of a deformed paedophile and rectify a miscarriage of justice. It’s beautifully filmed to reference the imagery of the original novels and shows the need for often flawed heroes in the face of unending, violent corruption.

This Oscar-winning film is a wonderfully tense study of 1950s life in a bleak and isolated Texas town which is dying both economically and culturally. Based on Larry McMurtry’s semiautobiographical novel it follows the friendship of two high school football stars, as they come to realise that their hopes of leaving this claustrophobic town for more exciting prospects are becoming more limited by the day. With fantastic performances all round, the film introduced us to Cybil Shepherd, who plays the pretty but wayward young woman who dumps her failing ex-football star boyfriend and beds the richest boy in town.

It’s a savage indictment of greed, corruption and hubris at the highest levels, with a sophisticated, witty and intelligent tone, making the message even more effective. This film could do for the financial industries what An Inconvenient Truth did for climate change, as despite its professionalism and craft, this is ultimately a call to arms in the most explicit terms.

Gaining exclusive access to the cave paintings of the Chauvet Pont d’Arc in southern France, Werner Herzog was tasked with documenting the 30,000-year-old drawings and paintings for the symbolic cost of one Euro. Using only a minimum of light and a custom-built hand-held camera he succeeds not only in filming but in bringing the images to life with his wonderfully idiosyncratic mix of fascination and humour. Making use of the contours of these ‘moving’ rock paintings as the starting point for a philosophical meditation on the origins of the art of film, he also explores questions of human existence.

I love spring! Last month I planted some veggies for the summer and I can’t wait to be eating them al fresco. On our menu at Chapter we’re slowly changing the more wintery fare for some lovely dishes incorporating what’s fresh and seasonal at the moment. I’m planning on adding one of my favourite warm weather dishes to the menu — escabeche is seared fish which is marinated in a lemon juice, fresh herb and chilli dressing and served hot or cold the next day. I love this with fresh green salad, sugar snap peas or tabouleh. Another cracking fish dish is our grilled mackerel with roasted mushrooms, peppers, onions and courgettes in homemade arrabiata sauce, topped with salsa verde and served with side salad. Bon appetit! Lambic beer is a spontaneously fermenting wheat beer to which no yeast is added and casks are left open overnight to collect natural micro-organisms. Fruit is then added for a second fermentation and to give the beer its distinctive taste and aroma. Ar ôl 6pm mae llefydd parcio ychwanegol ar gael ym maes parcio Gwasanaethau Dysgu Cymunedol Caerdydd sydd yn ymyl maes parcio Chapter. Uchod gwelir meysydd parcio eraill cyfagos. Mae bysus rhif 17, 18 a 33 yn gadael Canol y Ddinas bob pum munud. Chapter is situated in Canton, behind Cowbridge Road East, between Llandaff Road and Market Road. We are easily accessible from the city centre. Overflow car parking is available after 6pm at Cardiff Community Learning Services adjacent to the car park at Chapter. Alternative nearby car parks are shown above. Number 17, 18 and 33 buses leave every five minutes from the City Centre. From the east on M4: Take exit 29 onto the A48; after 6 miles turn slight left onto A4119/ Mill Lane; then left onto Cardiff Road; continue straight onto B4267/Llandaff Rd; after 300m turn right onto Market Place; take next right onto Market Road; Chapter car park is on the right. From the west on M4: Take exit 33 and follow signs onto A4232; after 6.3 miles exit onto Leckwith Rd, towards the new Cardiff City Stadium; keep straight until turning left onto Cowbridge Road E; Market Rd is on your right; Chapter car park is on the right.
