Rose Wylie’s pictures are bold, occasionally chaotic, often unpredictable, and always fiercely independent, without being domineering. Wylie works directly on to large, unprimed, un–stretched canvases and her inspiration comes from many and varied sources, most of them popular and vernacular. The cut–out techniques of collage and the framing devices of film, cartoon strips and Renaissance panels inform her compositions and repeated motifs. Often working from memory, she distils her subjects into succinct observations, using text to give additional emphasis to her recollections. Wylie borrows from first–hand imagery of her everyday life as well as films, newspapers, magazines, and television allowing herself to follow

loosely associated trains of thought, often in the initial form of drawings on paper. The ensuing paintings are spontaneous but carefully considered: mixing up ideas and feelings from both external and personal worlds. Rose Wylie favours the particular, not the general; although subjects and meaning are important, the act of focused looking is even more so. Every image is rooted in a specific moment of attention, and while her work is contemporary in terms of its fragmentation and cultural references, it is also traditional in its commitment to the most fundamental aspects of picturemaking: drawing, colour, and texture.

The Harri–Parris have been preparing for Anni’s wedding for months and want to celebrate the big day with you. Well, not the actual big day, they’re not made of money. How about the night before? The night they’re going to meet Anni’s new fiancé for the first time. And you are invited to come and have a look at him. What will the Harri–Parris think of Anni’s man? What will he think of his west Walian in–laws? Dust off your posh hats and join the Harri–Parris for an evening of songs, stories and cake. Produced by: Mai oh Mai Productions with Little Wander Ltd. Tonight I’m Gonna Be The New Me Fri 8 + Sat 9 Apr 8pm A woman takes to the stage. A man watches from the wings. They both wonder if their love will survive what’s about to happen. Tonight I’m Gonna Be The New Me is an arresting physical endurance act that crashes headfirst into an impossibly true love story — and out the other side. It exposes how we perform our relationships amidst a reality that just won’t live up to what the movies promised. Disarmingly honest and comically imagined, Tonight I’m Gonna Be The New Me pierces the bloody heart of our obsession with outlasting hardship. Intimate and startlingly immediate, it defies you to watch, in spite of yourself. Supported by Soho Theatre, The Place, Bios and Shoreditch Town Hall. Dick Johns — What Midlife Crisis? Wed 13 — Sat 16 Apr 8pm Dick Johns has aged. Like fine wine but without being stored on his side in a dusty cellar. Bald at 25, convinced that his lifestyle might kill him off by the age of 40, what is he to do now? There is pressure everywhere. Kids. Mortgage. Having to think twice before using the stairs. He will read you some stories. He might sing a song. There is a quiz. Everything about this screams midlife crisis. Come witness the humiliation. Dick Johns is a writer and actor. As Dick Bradnum he performed in The Office, My Hero and High Hopes. His short story Joy won the Writers and Artists Prize 2015. He has a photographic recollection of the lyrics of many 1980s pop music hits. He is 49. Please visit www.facebook.com/midlifecrisis66 and post your comments / observations / ideas on midlife. The Conquest of the South Pole By Manfred Karge Directed by Chris Durnall Tue 26 — Sat 30 Apr 8pm + Matinees Wed 27 + Sat 30 Apr 2pm South Wales valleys. 2016. Young men without work and without purpose, facing a future filled only with the pinball machine and lager, are the subject of this vivid, achingly alive play. Stefan, (Slupianek) cajoles his unemployed friends into recreating the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen’s infamous expedition to the South Pole in his back garden. It’s a game, but is taken very seriously indeed — involving raids on local camping shops and lessons in how to make seal stew. For everyone involved, this make–believe feels more real than their bleak everyday lives. Staged during a time when icy winds continue to blow through the British economy, and many young people have little prospect of meaningful work, Karge’s drama is the right play at the right moment. “It is often in the tiniest moments that hope is found. In Manfred Karge’s The Conquest of the South Pole it is the cry of a baby at the very end of the play, or is that cry simply one of despair, echoing back and forth across the years?” Age 14+ £10/£8 companyofsirens.com

Marguerite

Fri 18 Mar — Thu 7 Apr

Fri 8 — Thu 14 Apr

USA/2016/106mins/12A. Dir: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen. With: George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson.

France/2015/129mins/15. Dir: Xavier Giannol. With: Catherine Frot, André Marcon, Michel Fau.

Eddie Mannix is a Hollywood “fixer” helping the production of upcoming film ‘Hail Caesar’ starring famous actor Baird Whitlock. When a hungover Whitlock is kidnapped by a group named The Future, Mannix is the one in charge of collecting $100,000 and rescuing him.

Marguerite Dumont is a wealthy woman in 1920s Paris who loves music and adores singing and performing for her loved ones. She’s not a brilliant singer, but remains blissfully unaware of this fact as friends and her husband have maintained the fantasy of her talent. Problems begin when she seeks a real audience. Loosely based on the true story of American socialite Florence Foster Jenkins, this is a lively, tender story of a woman desperate for public admiration.

Customer Service guru David is disappointed by the failure of his art to remedy his personal problems. We join him in a melancholy hour seeking female companionship from a jilted ex–girlfriend, then from frumpy fan, Lisa. Except for Lisa, everyone looks and sounds the same, projections of Stone’s disenchantment with life. Using inventive stop– motion animation this is an intimate and tender exploration of modern society.

Wales/2015/108mins/subtitles/adv15. Dir: Gareth Bryn. With: Mark Lewis Jones, Annes Elwy, Dyfan Dwyfor.

Claire and Lisa are petty criminals on the run. Escaping from their most recent bungled robbery they wind up at a retreat in the Brecon Beacons and pose as a pair of sister beat poets. Whilst there they fall for the smouldering charms of Richard. This final film in the improvised ‘Modern Romance’ trilogy of comedies from director Jamie Adams (which has also included Benny & Jolene and A Wonderful Christmas Time) is a beautifully shot look at relationships and creative minds.

When young couple on–the–run Sara and Iwan crash their car into a stream near a remote farmhouse they’re rescued by dogged loner Stanley, disrupting his solitary existence. A moody, masterful drama with a rising sense of dread shot near Tregaron.
